Much research effort has been spent in attempting to reduce the high energy costs in grinding, but relatively little in developing methods to enhance the liberation of the minerals from each other. This paper presents some ideas on the nature and role of grain boundaries in mineral assemblies, and their influence on the propagation of cracks through the rock. It is argued that if the mechanisms of fracture are more clearly understood, crack propagation may be controlled in such a way that intergranular fracture dominates breakage, producing less fines and a higher degree of liberation.

The Jordan Phosphate Mines Company is one of the world's major phosphate rock and phosphatic fertilizers producers (the second largest phosphate rock exporter), with ore reserves exceeding 2 billion tonnes, mainly located in the Eshidiya area. The Eshidiya phosphate deposits, 120 km north-east of Aqaba, are of sedimentary origin (as are all phosphate ore in Jordan). Three exploitable beds (Al, A2, and A3) with variable content of P205, CaO, SiO2, etc., are processed in order to produce 68-70,73-75, and 75-77% TCP grades. The A3 bed, which is characterized as the most siliceous containing 40-48% TCP, requires physical beneficiation using wet scrubbing, screening, and desliming by hydrocylone, followed by anionic conventional flotation to achieve 75- 77% TCP grade. For the last 15 years extensive laboratory and pilot tests (including physical, chemical, and mineralogical studies) were carried out. After operating the industrial plant, certain modifications were deemed necessary to adjust the operational parameters and the final flowsheet, which was followed to obtain the targeted quantity and quality of concentrate.

NEW demands for underground power in the Miami mine of the Miami Copper Co., Miami, Ariz. has brought about expansion of the distribution system for both ac and dc power. Progress in mining equipment and the normal changes in the mine were responsible for this increased demand. Early power requirements were for pumping and haulage. A 440 v ac power line down No. 5 shaft took care of a small pumping load and shaft station lighting, 275 v dc power was generated by motor generator sets on the surface, with a churn drill hole from surface to the 570 haulage level serving as a cableway. Electric lights were installed where power was available, and thus were confined to the haulage level and shaft stations. All industrial power in the Miami area is 25-cycle, which dates back to the hydroelectric generator installation at Roosevelt Dam in 1908-10. The Problem The main haulage level was moved to the 720 level and later, to the 1000 level, requiring a longer feeder line with the resultant voltage drop. Also, as mining progressed to the east, the churn drill hole for the power cable would have been subjected to subsidence cracks. The first extension in the use of electricity was in electric blasting. About 1935 the mine went to electric blasting, using the dc haulage current. Bringing electric current to the working levels of the mine for blasting greatly expanded the use of electric lights. Lights were used in tool rooms, powder and cap magazines, stairways, and other semi-permanent installations. Like all mines, Miami Copper began to study and experiment with mechanical mucking and transportation of ore by slushers, shakers, and belts during the late 1930's and early 1940's. At the beginning of the program, power was supplied from the haulage level 275 v dc system. Later it became necessary to run a cable, carrying 440 v ac power, down the No. 7 ventilation shaft. The increased use of power came about gradually, and many new problems were added, not the least being the introduction of switch boards and power cables into the working areas of the mine, where drifts and crosscuts take weight, and require repairs. The 25-cycle current presented special problems, in that 25-cycle transformers are twice as large and about 2V2 times as heavy as 60-cycle transformers of the same power output. The recovery of rare earth metals from secondary sources has attracted much attention due to their ever expanding demand in the high-tech industry. The studies reported here focus on the hydrometallurgical recovery of lanthanum and cerium from spent fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts in a two-step process: leaching with nitric acid and solvent extraction by tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA). The experiments show a high dissolution yield of about 93% lanthanum and 42% cerium in a single leaching step with 2 M (126 g/L) HNO3 at 80 °C; only 11% aluminum has been dissolved simultaneously. In the subsequent solvent extraction step the best results for this leach liquor could be achieved using a 1:1 mixture of 25% (v/v) TBP (0.92 M) and 25% (v/v) D2EHPA (0.76 M) in n-decane without the need for any pH adjustment. In that case La(III) and Ce(III) can be extracted with 60% and 74% yield respectively in one stage from the majority of accompanying matrix elements. In particular no extraction of Al(III) could be observed under these conditions.

In discussing the petroleum products situation the first thing that comes to mind is "what is happening to gasoline." Is the consumption increasing? How is the export market? What about imports? Are stocks on hand too high? Have we produced too much? This paper will attempt to answer these questions. Consumption of gasoline (motor fuel) in the United States in spite of the depression and the chaotic conditions of many industries has increased during 1931 about 2 per cent over 1930. This favorable factor was offset by a severe contraction in exports, which fell off about 30 per cent from 1930. This drop in exports was so large that very little more export business was done than in 1926 or 1927. Taking all demand combined, there was a decrease from the peak year of 1930 of nearly 11,000,000 bbl., amounting to slightly over 2 per cent. The units of the industry, though, should have expected some decrease and governed themselves accordingly. Let us see what they did. They reduced imports over 3,000,000 bbl., which helped. Production was cut 3,000,000 bbl., but this was not enough, so that stocks increased 1,800,000 bbl. whereas during the previous year stocks were reduced 2,500,000 bbl. It is apparent, therefore, that something was done to keep the industry in balance in regard to gasoline, but not enough. If the year had ended on Sept. 30, we could have said that production had been cut 19,000,000 bbl. and stocks had been reduced from the previous year, but the excessive production during the last three months of the year changed everything. It is a strange thing and worthy of note that the price of gasoline fell to its lowest levels when apparently the greatest improvement was being made, and that during the last quarter of the year prices started to improve, when, in spite of an improvement in total demand which approximated 1930, an excessive production caused an uneconomic condition to set in. Stocks on hand on Dec. 31 were unquestionably too high, possibly 10,000,000 bbl. more than was needed for a strong condition to obtain. During the latter part of 1916 and the early months of 1917, due to war activities, there was a threatened shortage of coal which resulted in panic among consumers and a rush to obtain coal at once at any price. As a result of this insistent demand for immediate delivery, prices were bid up by the consumers to unprecedented heights; spot coal which had previously been selling at from $1.50 to $2 per ton was bid up to $5, $6, and, in exceptional cases, as high as $7.50 or more per ton. Then when the April, 1917, contract period arrived, contracts could be made only at prices ranging from $3 up to $5 and $6 per ton for the year's delivery. This condition caused such a demoralization of the business, and SO much complaint, that some action to regulate prices was considered essential by the National Administration. Lane-Peabody Agreement In May, 1917, a committee under the chairmanship of F. S. Peabody, of Chicago, was appointed by the Council of National Defense, through Mr. Lane, to consider the whole question of bituminous coal. This committee, with the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Lane, after numerous meetings and long negotiations with the operators throughout the country, announced on June 29 an agreement between the Committee and the producers, fixing a tentative maximum price for bituminous coal throughout the country at $3 per net ton f.o.b. mines, to which was added 25 c. for selling commission to wholesalers. This plan was based on the idea of fixing a maximum price, high enough to greatly stimulate production, with the expectation that the laws of supply and demand would, with ample production, operate to maintain fair and just prices for coal throughout the country.

ALEXANDER BRINTON COXE was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 19, 1838, the second of five sons of lion. Charles Sidney Core and Ann Maria Brinton. A more extended history of his family and its important relations to the development of the United States will be found in my Biographical Notice of his younger brother, Eckley B. Coxe, published in 1895. It is therefore sufficient to say here that Dr. Daniel Coxe, a distinguished physician and surgeon of London, and a medical attendant of Charles II and Queen Anne, purchased, in 1684 and 1686, lands in East and West Jersey from grantees of the Duke of York, and became Governor of West Jersey, in which capacity he did much to develop the provincial fisheries, the manufacture of marine salt and pottery, the exportation of tim¬ber and the West India trade. In 1698, having acquired the royal patent of the Province of " Carolana," covering (with some reservations) the territory extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific, between the 31st and 36th parallels of N. latitude, Gov. Cole sent an expedition from Charleston, S. C., to the Mississippi. In 1769, seventy years later, his grandchildren surrendered to the Crown their title under this vast and vague patent, receiving in return a grant of 100,000 acres in the Colony of New York. The line of his descendants, so far as they concern this sketch, is as follows 1. Col. Daniel Core, his son, b. 1673, who came to New Jersey in 1700; resided there until his death (1730); held many high offices; and issued in London (1722) A Description of the Provinces of Carolana, containing probably the earliest published plan of political union for the British Colonies in North America.

I. INTRODUCTION Modern hydrometallurgy has its roots in such notable successes as heap leaching for recovery of copper, cyanidation of gold ores, the Bayer process, the Oxland process for tungsten, electrorefining of copper, roast/ leach/electrowin process for zinc, and production of yellowcake from lowgrade uranium ores. Metallurgical testing techniques, sampling and analytical procedures, operating and maintenance practices, and improved methods and materials of construction which were pioneered in these processes have promoted the extension of hydrometallurgy into other applications. Periodically, new tools such as solvent extraction, resin ion exchange, and flocculants have opened new avenues to hydrometallurgists. Conversely, pursuit of more complex mineralization, the rising costs of energy and environmental quality preservation, and declining ore grades continue to create new challenges. For much of this century, it can be fairly said that practically any hydrometallurgical development moved the frontier of technology. The 1970's and 1980fs, however, have seen a significant maturing of hydrometallurgy's role in process metallurgy. Simplistically, this maturing seems to derive from a growing awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of hydrometallurgy and a determined effort to capitalize on the strengths. For example, many of us were among those revolutionaries of the 1960's and 1970's who taught that "chemical smelting" was the answer to the treatment of all sulfides. We now recognize, however, that only in very special cases can hydrometallurgy offer economic advantage over the generally less energy-intensive pyrometallurgical systems. The maturing of hydrometallurgy does not, however, signal stagnation. Important innovations are being studied and developed in most extractive areas, and a number are approaching or have achieved commercialization. From our company's perspective, that of an organization dealing with the development of the most economic solutions to metallurgical problems, innovation must be defined as the commercially successful reduction of an idea to practice. There appears to be no shortage of ideas, nor has there ever been a shortage. Many ideas now being implemented were conceived decades ago, but reduction to practice was foiled by the lack of such technology as responsive process control and economical materials of construction capable of withstanding highly corrosive or erosive environments. Commercialization of a new process is a particularly challenging undertaking. Even if technical risks are reduced to a minimum through careful and thoughtful process development, there are inevitable uncertainties in feed characteristics, variable costs, and product prices. Commercialization takes courage, both on the part of innovators who may be staking their careers or reputations and of investors who may face financial disaster in the event of project failure. This paper discusses innovative programs and recently commercialized processes which either have been discussed in the literature or disclosed to Hazen Research staff in private nonconfidential conversations with contacts in industry. Regarding this latter category of information, relative ease of communication has resulted in many of our observations being of North American origin.

The yield strength of a dispersion-hardened W-3.8 vol pct Tho,alloy, in both the recovered and recrys-tallized condition, was investigated and cornpared with that ofrecrystallized pure tungsten over the temperature range of 325" to 2400°C. It is deduced that the Orowan mechanism is obeyed in the recrystallized alloy. In the recovered alloy, a further enhancement of the yield strength results from the retained substructure which is stable up to temperatures in excess of 2700°C. Temperature and strain rate cycling tests were also performed, and the apparent activation energy for the deformation process was derived. This activation energy, - 3 ev, for the recovered and also the recrystallized alloy was about the same as that for re crystallized pure tungsten. However, the activation volume of the recovered alloy, -10-2 cu cm, was about an order of magnitude lower than that of the recrystallized alloy or pure tungsten. This fact accounts for an enhancement oj- the temperature dependence of the yield stress of the recovered alloy. A dislocation velocity exponent of about 4 to 13 was deduced frorn the strain rate cycling tests , which is in good agreement with values reported for tungsten single crystals. VARIOUS theories have been developed to explain the enhanced yield strength of a metal containing a dispersed second phase of small hard particles. These theories are thoroughly reviewed by Kelly and Nicholson.' The theoretical models can be separated into two types. The first type assumes direct interactions between moving dislocations and dispersoids. One of the most widely investigated models for this mechanism is the bowing out of dislocations between the dis-persoids and their subsequent pinching off in order to bypass the obstacles. This is the well-known Orowan mechanism.' The second type is an indirect effect of the dispersion because of its ability to stabilize to high temperatures the substructure introduced by cold working. In this instance, the increment in the yield strength is expected to be inversely proportional to the square root of the subgrain diameter. In the present work, a quantitative study was made of the strengthening effect caused by a thoria dispersion in a recrystallized W-3.8 vol pct Thoz alloy over the temperature range 325" to 2400°C. The results are compared with the increment predicted for the Orowan mechanism based on the calculations by ~shb~.~ In addition, the alloy was tested in the recovered state so that any additional strengthening resulting from the substructure produced during fabrication could be measured. The respective contributions can be separated in this manner, provided that the particle size distribution of the dispersion remains the same in both the work-hardened and the recrystallized state. Particle size distribution measurements showed that this condition was met in the present work. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A) Material Production and Fabrication. The alloy investigated is essentially the same as that reported much earlier by ~effries,~ who also found the strength of tungsten to be improved by the thoria dispersion. The procedure for producing the alloy consisted of mechanically blending a thorium nitrate solution in proper concentration with tungsten oxide (WO3) powder, followed by hydrogen reduction to metal powder. After reduction, the dispersed second phase is present as thoria (Thoz). The pure tungsten powder used for comparison was produced in the same manner except that the thoria doping step was omitted. The powders were consolidated by cold pressing and self-resistance sintering in hydrogen. The resulting ingot had a cross section about 0.6 sq in. and a density about 93 pct of theoretical. The ingot was swaged to 0.174-in.-diam rod at temperatures varying from 1650°C initially to -1200°C near final rod sizes. Two intermediate recrystallization anneals were employed during fabrication. Analysis of the swaged rods is reported in Table I. B) Electron Microscopy Techniques. Carbon extraction rrPxcas prepared by a technique reported by ~00' were used to quantitatively evaluate the thoria particle size and distribution. Electron nlicrographs of extraction replicas were taken at 20,000 times but were then enlarged two to three times in printing. The areas photographed were randomly selected. A Zeiss Particle Size Analyzer (Model TGZ3) was used to count and measure the sizes of all particles present on the print. About three thousand particles were counted in determining a distribution curve. Electron transmission microscopy was used to determine the effect of annealing on the substructures of the materials. Thin foils were produced by a two-stage thinning process. The rods were first ground on emery paper to ribbons about 10 mils thick and then a jet of 5 pct KOH was used to electrolytically reduce a portion of the cross section of the ribbon. Final perforation was achieved by immersing the specimen in a 5 pct KOH solution and electrolytically polishing at a current density of about 0.3 amp cm-'. The foils were examined with a Hitachi HU-11A electron microscope. C) Tensile Testing. Tensile testing was performed in an Instron Testing Machine equipped with a radiation-type vacuum furnace which operates at about 1O"S torr at temperatures as high as 2400 °C. The same furnace was used for annealing the tensile specimens.

In connection with its investigations of the blast-furnace process, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station, developed a 6-ton experimental furnace. Such a furnace was needed to determine the feasibility of producing ferroman-ganese from Minnesota manganiferous iron ores, a problem of national importance because of the present need for manganese in the steel industry and our small reserves of ferro-grade ores. Furnace operators are reluctant to use new or untried raw materials or to make decided innovations in practice on account of the financial hazard of experimenting with full-scale equipment. A small furnace which can be operated at a relatively low cost is particularly adapted for testing new raw materials and for determining the feasibility of decided innovations in practice. Laboratory experiments, plus whatever information may be available, are valuable but often do not indicate the net result of changes in an operation involving a large number of interrelated variables. From time to time the cooperation of the Bureau of Mines is solicited in connection with problems involving departures from normal procedure. Under these circumstances some sort of a practical demonstration is a desirable forerunner to full-scale operations which appear feasible after small-scale tests. The Aluminum Co. of America was interested in knowing the practicability of smelting a charge of bauxite, iron ore, and limestone, of proportions that would produce slag of the following composition: A1203, 47 to 48 per cent.; CaO, 41 to 42 per cent.; SiO2,4 to 5 per cent.; TiO2, 2 to 3 per cent.; FeO, 1 percent., and MgO, 1.8 percent. In addition to determining whether it was feasible to operate a blast furnace on slag approaching the composition given above, a quantity of slag was needed for a series of experiments that would show the relative ease and cost of extracting alumina from slag which could be made in the blast furnace, as compared to extracting it from raw bauxite. 0In the present paper, the feasibility of the recovery of dysprosium from spent Nd-Fe- B magnets containing approximately 9 wt% Dy was investigated by using molten salt process. The salt bath consisted of a mixture of NaCl-KCl-LiCl corresponding to the ternary eutectic composition. AlCl3 was used as a chlorinating agent in order to enable an efficient dissolution of metal in the molten salt phase in the salt bath. The metal chloride which is formed as the result of chemical reaction between the metal in magnet and AlCl3, is subsequently subjected to electrolysis in order to be deposited on the cathode. Graphite rods were dipped in the salt bath as electrodes and alumina crucibles were used as the containers for the electrolytic cells.

A.) : In congratulating Mr. Hooker upon his resume of Mr Parry's paper I have in mind the fact that he carried out the research into pipe pressures. Hydraulic filling as practised in Kalgoorlie has created world wide interest, with these pressures and percolation being vital points.Early in the 1950s, representatives of the Kolar field were conduGted over the local mines where stopes at depths below 2,000 ft were being filled. The problems of pipe pressures were their main consideration since depths of up to 10,000 ft were envisaged.Mr Krishnaiah and Mr Murthy from the same field are with us today and perhaps we may hear of their experiences with depths of 6,000 ft and long lateral lines.J. Holly (Lake View and Star Ltd., Fimiston, W.A.): There is one phase, which I would like to mention myself, that has been very evident in Kalgoorlie operations. That is, we do not get the percolation properties that are obtained on many other fields in the world, and our tendency here has been to assess the quality of our fill more by its settling rate, i.e. the rate at which we can draw off clear water at the surface of the filling levels, rather than the rate that this water percolates down through the fill before it consolidates.We are tending now to measure the quality of our fill as a settling rate rather than as a percolation rate.Americans talk about percolation rates being the important property: If anyone has any experience on operating with fills with different percolation rates, I think their views would be very interesting to the meeting art this stage. Na indústria siderúrgica integrada, geram-se vários tipos de coprodutos, dentre estes escoria granulada de alto forno, os pós de aciaria extraídos nos sistemas de despoeiramento a úmido e a seco do conversor LD e o pó de coletor de alto forno. Em relação aos pós, são principalmente portadores de unidades de ferro e carbono, podendo conter também zinco, o que os tornam alvos de estudos e inovações que buscam recuperar ou reciclar estes elementos. No presente estudo foram concebidos briquetes autorredutores usando os pós finos-F e grossos -G, oriundos de um sistema de despoeiramento a seco de aciaria LD, nas proporções percentuais, F – G, de 50-50 e 70-30, misturados com pó de coletor de alto forno. Utilizando como aglomerante o cimento ARI, foram avaliadas as resistências à compressão dos briquetes em diferentes tempos de cura e determinadas suas metalizações nas temperaturas de 1100°C e 1150°C, em tempos que se estenderam até 45 minutos. Adicionalmente, as capacidades dos briquetes de alterarem a temperatura do aço liquido quando adicionados ao banho, foram avaliadas utilizando-se o balanço térmico do sistema briquete-aço liquido, bem como considerados os potenciais de oxidação do processo e o estabelecimento de um sequenciamento termodinâmico para as reações. Os resultados mostraram que os aglomerados autorredutores possuem alta capacidade refrigerante quando adicionados ao aço liquido, o que os enquadra como possíveis materiais alternativos à sucata e pelotas no controle da temperatura do aço nos convertedores LD. Além disso, a alta cinética de metalização do Fe mostrou ser também viável o uso dos briquetes autorredutores na recuperação do metal contido nos resíduos.

Profiled below are the eight RMCMI 1999 Scholarship Award winners. Seven of the eight attended the 95th Regular Meeting and convention at Crested Butte, Colorado in late June. Each spoke during the Scholarship Awards Monday luncheon and shared their goals with attendees. In addition to receiving a $1,500 tuition credit, thanks to the Patrons of the Institute annual funding of scholarships, each received recognition at the luncheon with a brass plaque signifying this honor. The winners are guests of the Institute Sunday through Tuesday and have an incredible opportunity to meet many in the coal industry who could be potential employers. The state vice presidents host the winners and pay for their travel and hotel expenses. This is a continuing scholarship and may be renewed for tuition credit again in the senior year if they remain a full time student and if recommended by the dean of their college or university. A resident from each of the eight member RMCMI states is selected by the Scholarship committee from Board approved institutions. Criteria for these annual awards is that the recipient (1) is a full time sophomore student who will use the tuition credit the junior year. (2) Be both a U. S. citizen and a legal resident of the member stare. (3) Maintain good academic standing, be pursuing a degree in a mining related field and have an expressed interest in western coal as a possible career path. "The huge urbanisation of the world cities have invariably resulted in enormous requirements of development in transport and other facilities. As the surface space available for the construction of these infrastructural facilities is found to be inadequate, underground space is widely used recently for this purpose. However, to understand the behaviour of these underground structures through experiments under various loading conditions is not practically feasible. Hence numerical methods have widely been used to model these structures and predict their behaviour. The underground structures generally rest on soil or rock. Depending upon the properties of the material surrounding the tunnel, the deformation pattern and the stress contours vary. If the tunnels are placed on soft ground at a shallow depth, the presence of existing structures will add to the stresses and strains developed. In the case of densely populated cities, tunnelling operation may result in huge damages if the settlements are not within the desirable limits. This may in turn lead to the collapse of the tunnel along with adjoining structures. So the determination of stress levels associated with the yield of wall due to excavation is very important and necessary supports and reinforcement should be provided. Numerical simulations using discrete element method (DEM) and finite element method (FEM) have been done to understand the stress variation around single and twin tunnels. Studies are also done to quantify the improvement of stability on the introduction of lining around the tunnels in a weak cemented soil mass like sandstone.INTRODUCTIONMost of the life line facilities which include pipelines for electricity, water, communication, sewage, gas, roads, metro, utility tunnels etc in modern urban areas are underground structures. Infrastructure development is crucial for any city and sustainable development urges for underground constructions. Accordingly, there is already a great demand for tunnels to be constructed in difficult and crowded urban settings. This results in the fact that a large number of risk factors are associated with tunnels in these densely populated urban areas. These constraints pose threats to tunnel construction and also demands for minimal disturbance to the public and to the surrounding utilities. One of the most important factor to be considered while designing an underground structure is its stability with respect to the surrounding medium and adjoining existing structures. In this study, a comprehensive presentation of the numerical modeling of single and twin tunnels adopting two different methods is presented."

The knowledge of the expected run of mine (ROM) fragmentation during the feasibility study of a green field site is essential for the design of downstream crushing and milling processes. However,the prediction of blast fragmentation can be a challenging process due to the uncertainty related to the blast design and rock mass parameters. In general,a number of possible blast designs are considered in a feasibility study,with factors such as bench height and blasthole diameter influencing the design. Rock mass parameters are normally derived from a limited number of geotechnical diamond drill cores. Although diamond drill core can provide detailed information concerning intact rock strength (unconfined compressive strength and point load),it provides limited structural information to predict the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass. The in situ block size is an essential input to the prediction of the fragmentation distribution, in particular the coarse end. This paper outlines the methodology of blast fragmentation modeling undertaken for a green field feasibility study at the Riska gold deposit in Indonesia. The favoured milling process for the feasibility study was dump leaching,with no crushing of the ore material extracted from the pit. For this reason,blast fragmentation was a critical issue to be addressed by the study. A range of blast designs were considered with bench heights and blasthole diameters ranging from 4 m to 7 m and 76 mm to 102 mm respectively. Rock mass data was obtained from 19 diamond drill cores across the deposit (total drill length approximately 2200 m). Intact rock strength was estimated from qualitative strength descriptors,while the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass was estimated from the Rock Quality Designation (RQD) of the core. The methodology of fragmentation prediction involved a number of steps including the estimation of rock mass parameters from diamond drillhole data including the estimation of the in situ block size, delineation of blast domains within the deposit,and the assessment of the impact of various blast design parameters and rock mass variation on the predicted fragmentation distribution. The modelling process for the Riska green field site highlighted the need for additional rock mass data to be collected post feasibility stage and once the development of the mine commenced.

"Les Mines Selbaie have been producing copper and zinc concentrates from the A-1 ore zone since 1986. This paper reviews major developments in flotation practice over that period. Firstly, ore blending strategies for Selbaie's non-homogeneous polymetallic ore are discussed. The evolution of reagent use is then reviewed, focussing on copper collector trials. A description of Selbaie's flotation columns follows. The latest theoretical and experimental study of physical processes initiated by explosions in solid media have made it possible to obtain a deeper insight into the mechanism of the energy transfer to ambient rock from char es of explosives interspersed with various air gaps. As shown in (17, high explosive action causes excessive fragmentation of medium in the vicinity of the charge, while expansion of the process into the massif is negligible. A theoretical outline of a more rational application of explosion energy was given with a view of obtaining more uniform fragmentation of rock convenient for loading and transportation. The proposed idea proven by experimental study consisted of the possibility of explosion control based on redistribution of explosion energy. Practical realization of the above idea was proposed (1) involving charges with air gaps for rock fragmentation. Since the Rolla Symposium on Mining Research (USA, 1961) (2), borehole charges with air gaps have become common practice. This method of rock blasting is applied in open cast and underground mines working the hardest and viscous, hard, medium hard and soft rocks (ore, quartzites, granites, 1 imes tones, sandstones, coals, etc.) as well as at enterprises for extraction of building materials and raw chemical minerals of any strength. Application of charges with air gaps results in an increase of the degree and uniformity of fragmentation (up to 94 percent of the blasted rock mass consists of fragments not exceeding 400 mm), the average fragment size decreases by 1.5-2 times and the amount of lumps is reduced by 2-10 times (in some cases there are no lumps at all ).
