In open-pit mines, the long-term production scheduling optimization problem (LTPSOP) is a complicated problem that contains constraints, large datasets and uncertainties. Due to its dimensions and NP-hard nature, it is usually difficult to find an ideal solution to the LTPSOP. The optimal schedule generally restricts the ore, metal and waste tonnages, average grades, and cash flows of each period. In this paper, to synthesize grade uncertainty into the strategic schedule, a stochastic integer programming (SIP) framework is presented to LTPSOP. The objective function of the SIP model is to maximize the net present value and minimize the risk of deviation from the production targets considering grade uncertainty simultaneously while satisfying all technical constraints and operational requirements. Instead of applying one estimated orebody model as input to optimize the production schedule, a set of equally probable orebody realizations is applied to synthesize grade uncertainty in the strategic schedule and produce a more profitable and riskbased production schedule. To solve the LTPSOP, the hybrid approach with the augmented Lagrangian relaxation method, the Harris Hawks optimization, the Random Forest method and Monte Carlo method was proposed. To indicate the applicability of the model, a case study on a gold mine was implemented. The framework displays the capability to minimize risk and improvement in the expected net present value and financial profitability .

"This paper presents the drilling and grouting program performed at two abandoned landfills located into former calcarenite rock quarries in Manfredonia, Italy. Tests performed after the abandonment of the landfills detected leachate infiltration into the groundwater, which required the implementation of a remedial program. In order to seal the rock fissures and create an impervious basin at the base of the two landfills, sub-horizontal boreholes were drilled and grouted into the rock under the waste deposits. At the same time, sub-vertical boreholes were drilled and grouted along the perimeter, to laterally confine the landfills. Finally, the landfills were properly capped with an HDPE membrane, geogrid, geotextile and topsoil. The methodology implemented to create a watertight barrier under the two landfills was innovative and cost-effective. Moreover, the drilling and grouting minimized the environmental impact of the remedial work, since the waste remained in their original location and were not affected by the remedial process.IntroductionThe two landfills, “Pariti-1 RSU” and “Conte di Troia”, are located approximately 6 km (4 miles) southwest of Manfredonia, a small town close to Foggia, Italy (Fig. 1). These landfills are located into two rock quarries, formerly used for the extraction of calcarenite (i.e., a weak calcareous sandstone, in tuff facies), and were abandoned in the early 90s. The two landfills cover a total area of about 45,000 m2 (11.2 acres), and mainly include urban solid waste with a depth of up to 25 m (82 ft). The main characteristics of the two waste landfills are listed in Table 1."

Acidic wastewater is at present directly neutralized with lime or limestone, which wastes resources such as titanium, scandium and iron and generates a great deal of solid waste. This study proposes a novel approach for the separation and recovery of titanium, scandium and iron from acidic wastewater, and utilization of red gypsum. The proposed process not only recovers valuable metals from acidic wastewater but also treats the red gypsum that has previously been dumped.

INTRODUCTION Mobile excavating and handling equipment are important 'tools of trade' in the mining and construction industries. The handling of this equipment must be mastered so that its limitations are learned and its harmonic use with other pieces of equipment is practiced. he sudden growth in mobile excavating and handling equipment type, size, complexity, and application started after the Second World War. This growth has not been accompanied by pertinent human factors research. Investigations into the proper and safe handling of such equipment with due regard for human and machine limitations are lacking. One such piece of equipment is the front-end loader (FEL), which during one cycle of operation excavates, loads, and hauls, (Lotfi and Adler, 1981). The diversity of action by FEL is archetypical among excavating and handling equipment. Front-end loaders are the most rapidly proliferating type of equipment in the industry. Also, front-end loaders are involved in the highest number of accidents involving mobile excavating and handling equipment. In the period 1970 to 1978, FEL's were involved in 27% of all mobile equipment accidents in surface mining (Adkins, 1980). Improving operational safety and efficiency will reduce the frequency of accidents. The performance of the operators can be evaluated and improved by the following steps: first, define the operating conditions and the operator workload intensity (Adler and Lotfi, 1983), second, monitor the operator to evaluate his task performance, and third, make recommendations based on the findings. The stressful nature of the equipment operating task is an acknowledged fact (Field, 1980). However, a systematic measurement of stress evaluation is lacking. In this paper, methods for measuring mental stress and fatigue, are defined, the mental load which caused the stress is outlined, and stress measurement methods are proposed. The paper point out considerating how mining activities contributed to sustainability, it is important to consider how exploitation of a finite resource can be regarded as sustainable. The now well–recognized concept of sustainable development holds that society’s pursuit of development that meets current needs should not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability, then, contemplates multigenerational enjoyment of a quality of life that includes social and economic benefits and a healthy environment in which to live. In this sense, the benefits of our activities must always exceed the risks. Many other companies are also making significant inroads along the path to sustainability.

THE high-frequency laboratory induction furnace with a rotating liquid crucible enables research workers to conduct certain investigations heretofore very difficult or impossible to realize because vessels are not obtainable that are capable of resisting the physical conditions or the chemical actions to which they are subjected. Applications for patents covering commercial uses of centrifugal liquid crucibles were filed in the United States in 1919,1 in France in 1925, in the United States and Germany in 1926,2 and in France in 1927.3 In 1928, Schuette and Maier,4 of the Bureau of Mines, reported the construction of a whirling table beneath a high-frequency induction furnace. SHAPE AND SIZE OF CENTRIFUGAL LIQUID CRUCIBLES When a vessel containing a liquid is rotated, the inner surface of the liquid takes the shape f a paraboloid under the simultaneous action of centrifugal force and gravity. The internal dimensions of the paraboloid rotating liquid crucible are governed by the diameter of the container and its speed of rotation. Melted Wood's metal was poured into cylinders 2 ½ in. in diameter, which were rotated at 180, 300, and 468 r.p.m. When the metal was solid, a slurry of plaster of Paris was added, and rotation continued until the plaster had set. Fig. 1, a photograph of sections f the cylinders, shows the effect f speed f rotation of the containers upon the shape f the inner surface f the rotating liquid crucibles.

A reliability based analysis method for a drilled shaft stabilized slope system is presented in this paper. In the past effort, a deterministic method using the limiting equilibrium method of slices for determining the global factor of safety of a slope reinforced by a row of drilled shafts was developed using the soil arching concept. The drilled shaft stabilization mechanisms for the slope were treated as the drilled shaft induced soil arching, which reduces the driving forces on the down slope side of the drilled shaft. The effect of drilled shafts induced soil arching on the reduction of the driving stresses in the limiting equilibrium slope stability analysis was quantified by the load transfer factor through extensive finite element simulation studies. A semi-empirical equation was also developed for expressing the load transfer factor as a function of the soil properties, including strength parameters and unit weight as well as the slope geometry and soil profile, the location and spacing of the drilled shaft, and the dimension of the drilled shaft. However, due to the inherent uncertainties of the soil properties and the model error of the semi-empirical load transfer equation, a modification of the deterministic method into a probabilistic method is developed in this paper. The Monte Carlo statistical method is used to generate random variables for the soil strength parameters based on the prescribed probability characteristics, including mean, COV, and the probability distribution function. In addition, the modeling error of the load transfer factor is also treated as a random variable in the Monte Carlo simulation method, in which the mean, COV, and probability distribution function for the bias of the semi-empirical equation are used. The developed theories were coded into a computer program for analyzing complex slope geometry and slope profile conditions. Two examples are shown in the paper to illustrate the analysis results of the developed probability approach for determining the reliability of a drilled shaft stabilized slope system.

The increasing demand for pure aluminum and aluminum compounds of industrial quality from kaolinite ore cannot be overemphasized. Nigeria is one of the African countries endowed with abundant solid mineral resources that have not been sufficiently exploited to assist its indigenous industries. A wide array of applications of pure aluminum and its compounds are available, such as paper filling, refractories, adsorbent, catalysis, and paint additives. In this study, the upgrading of a Nigerian biotite-rich kaolinite ore by a hydrometallurgical route was investigated in oxalic acid media. During leaching studies, the effects of parameters including reaction temperature, lixiviant concentration and particle size on the extent of ore dissolution were examined. At optimal conditions (1.0 mol/L C2H2O4, 75 °C), 92.0% of the initial 10 g/L ore was reacted within 120 min. The dissolution curves from the shrinking core model were analyzed and found to conform to the assumption of surface diffusion reaction, and the calculated activation energy of 33.2 kJ/mol supported the proposed model. The unreacted product (~8.0%) analyzed by XRD was found to contain siliceous impurities and could serve as a valuable by-product for certain industries.

The magnetic susceptibilities of some ores and the major rock formations of the Precambrian Belt Supergroup in the Coeur d'Alene mining district were determined both in the laboratory by the use of the Gouy method and in the field with a Bison susceptibility unit. Trace element analysis of the same group of rock samples was also made using the atomic adsorption technique. Results of this preliminary study indicate that some correlation exists between the magnetic susceptibilities and the various rock formations. This may be useful for regional mapping and mineral exploration.

This paper describes a separation coefficient Ks useful as a "measure of goodness" to be used in factorial and response surface methodology. The use and limitations of the separation coefficient is discussed, and a computer program for calculating the coefficient is presented (in Fortran). The application of the coefficient is illustrated in terms of electro-dynamic separation of Mesabi semitaconites. Present Mesabi wash ores and gravity concentrates with an iron to silica ratio of only 5 or 6 to 1 are no longer readily salable, for the steel industry now demands concentrates with an iron to silica ratio of at least 10 to 1 and a structure comparable to pellets. THE ELECTRODYNAMIC-FLOTATION PROCESS Wash ores and gravity concentrates consist largely of hematite, goethite, and quartz. Several methods of beneficiation are being tested at the University of Minnesota Mines Experiment Station with a view to improving the salability of these materials. A process that looks particularly promising from an economic view is the combination electrodynamic-flotation process shown in Fig. 1. This process is designed to upgrade gravity concentrates to a 5% silica content and to provide fines — from the flotation circuit —to permit agglomeration. Although electrodynamic concentration of specularite is an established and well-understood process, the electrodynamic concentration of Mesabi goethite-hematite gravity concentrates presents interesting and enigmatic problems. The gravity concentrates are by no means assemblages of clean, free mineral particles. Instead, the concentrates to be retreated consist of a great variety of middlings. More or less complete liberation would require grinding to minus 325 mesh, at which size only flotation could be expected to function, and even then grades and especially recoveries would not be satisfactory. A close examination of the gravity concentrates shows that grinding to 100% minus 48 mesh will produce a product which is approximately 70 weight % plus 325 mesh (see Fig. 1). The remaining 30 weight % can be deslimed and floated by conventional methods, but the resulting iron concentrate is

The only fine coal washer with proved automatic controls, the feldspar jig is capable of good efficiencies even at low separating gravities, handles a variety of products, and treats 150 tph and over. IN continental Europe the feldspar jig is used almost exclusively for cleaning the fine sizes of coal; it operates with an artificial bed, made up generally of pieces of feldspar or of any other hard and heavy rock with good cleavages. A primitive form of this machine requiring close supervision was used in this country years ago, but output was small. The modern machines are generally air-pulsated Baum-type jigs, with capacities up to 150 tph, and treat sizes from % in. to 0, usually previously dedusted or deslimed. These jigs are equipped with very accurate and sensitive automatic controls insuring satisfactory operation even at low separating gravity and with feeds irregular in quality and quantity. This paper will deal more particularly with coal cleaning separation, but the technical studies apply equally to all minerals. Theory of the Feldspar Jig To understand fully the operation of the feldspar jig and to appreciate its potential value, it is necessary to measure and analyze the motion of small particles of various specific gravities, falling in various media, under various conditions. As no practical formulas were available for that purpose, the writer has developed new theories and established new sets of formulas, which cannot be demonstrated here. They are applicable to all minerals and to many problems of coal or mineral concentration. These formulas do not pretend to absolute accuracy, but results, tested by comparison with experimentally recorded data, are sufficient for practical purposes, as they give definite indications of trends, relative values, and order of magnitude of the many factors involved. For pulsating motions no earlier formulas are available. In the case of continuous currents or motions, such formulas as Rittinger's, Allen's, or Stokes', over a hundred years old, apply only to special shapes and sizes of particles, involve factors and coefficients difficult to measure or appreciate, and deal only with free motions. They are of little use in solving practical problems. Units used with the formulas presented here are in the CGS system. Lateral friction and suction have been taken into account according- to methods currently used in aerodynamics, and only hindered motion is dealt with. As the feldspar jig is primarily intended to create a fluid bed condition, the mixture of fluids and solids obtained is homogeneous, and the apparent specific gravity of the separating medium is calculated accordingly. For instance, if 20 pct of the volume is coal and shale, with an average of 1.60 sp gr, in a liquid of 1.10 sp gr, the actual specific gravity of the separating fluid is 0.80 x 1.1 + 0.20 X 1.6 = 1.20. The fundamental equations are as follows: The general motion of a particle falling in a medium of specific gravity equal to u, hindered motion. is dv/dt = g/Ls [ L (s-u) - u/g v2 [1] g = 981 cm per sec, acceleration of gravity, and L = thickness of the particle of specific gravity (s) and velocity (v). The initial acceleration dv/dt = g (1-u/s ) [2] is a function of the specific gravity of the particle, only for a given medium, and independent of its dimensions—an ideal separating condition. The terminal velocity Vt = gxL- (s-u)/u, [3] for a given value of u, is a function of s and L. Two particles, L, s, and L2 s2, are said to be equivalent if they have the same terminal velocity, and accordingly L1/L2=s2-u/s1-u. [4] Two such particles cannot be separated by continuous currents, in any concentrating device. HAVING been asked to make some remarks after the reading of Mr. Dyrssen's paper, I regret that a test started some months ago has not yet been completed, but some of the things which I can tell you at this time seem interesting and shed a little different light on the idea of a recuperator. The device referred to is becoming more than. a recuperator, largely taking the place of a regenerator. I assume there is familiarity with the sketches that I presented in October, 1926, before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, describing our re-cuperator combination with checker chambers, and I have additional ones to show at this time. The follow-ing remarks will deal with modifications that have been made. At that time I suggested the gases leaving the regenerators at, say, 1400°, be reduced to 500° F. The opinion of the operating men consulted since that time is that, under the best operating conditions, the tem-perature may be 750° to 800° F. after the recuperator and on entering the stack. While the lowest final temperature of the gases en-tering the stack is important from the economic stand-point of fuel burning, and operating in general, it is not the whole story. The method of getting the heat out of the checkers is important. It is believed by many with whom we have talked that a better way is by a combination of checkers and a carborundum re- cuperator of the type described as it will stand all tem-peratures met in practice and might be called a super-refractory.

The work reported in this paper was carried out to supplement the existing information concerning directional properties and recrystallization textures of annealed brass sheet and strip. These characteristics are of direct interest when the forming and drawing properties of such material are being considered. Among those who have made contributions in this field are Bass and G1ocker;l Bauer, Göler and Sachs;2 Phillips and Samans;3 Pratt;4 Price;5 Cook;6 Richards;7 Brick;8 and Brick and Williamson.9 These investigators have found, in general, that in brass strip that shows directional variations in properties, tensile strength has a minimum value and elongation has a maximum value at 45' to the rolling direction. The most pronounced directional properties have been found in material given the greatest reductions in rolling followed by high annealing temperatures. Recrystallization texture of brass has been variously reported as (II3)[II2], (ooi)[ioo], and a combination of (II0)[II5] and traces of the primary rolling texture, (110)[112]. The directional studies have been very informative, but actual tests appear to have been confined to material in its final condition. Tests at intermediate stages have received little attention although previous history of some materials has been partly considered. Perhaps the most comprehensive investigation was made by Cook,' who studied the directional properties of 70-30 brass strip for which the final and penultimate, or next to the last, anneals and the final reductions were varied. He found that, for any given combination of penultimate anneal and final reduction, the tendency toward the development of directional properties was reduced as the temperature of the final anneal was decreased. In addition to drawing cups and making tensile tests of the finished material at various angles to the rolling direction, he measured the frequency and the angles of twins in grains for several specimens. Plots of his twin counts showed directionality for the materials that produced eared cups. Test Materials and Equipment For this investigation, one commercial heat of 68-32 brass was cast in the form of bars for cold-rolling, I31/2 in wide and I1/2 in. thick. The analysis was as follows: 68.83 per cent copper, 0.04 per cent lead, 0.01 per cent iron, 31.12 per cent zinc (by difference). The bars were so processed to the final thickness, 0.020 in., as to obtain on this thickness all possible combinations of the variables listed below except those involving the sequence of 84 per cent penultimate reduction and 84 per cent final reduction: I. Penultimate reductions of 37 per cent, 50 per cent and 84 per cent; 2. Penultimate anneals at 800°, 900°, 1050° and 1200°F.; 3. Final reductions of 37 per cent, 50 per cent, 69 per cent and 84 per cent;

Weight-gain data obtained by nitriding low-carbon sheet steel in an amrnonia CNH,) atmosphere indicated that the process obeyed a parabolic rate law. The calculated actization energy for nitriding in the range 964" to 1268°F agreed reasonably well with published data. At 1358"F, rate data indicated that the activation energy decreased. Weight-gain data obtained by uszng mixtures of NH3 -Nz at 1268°F containzng jrom 10 to 100 zol pct NH3 also obeyed a parabolic rate law. The rate of 'nitriding increased with an increase in the NH3 content of the gas Mixture. It is well-known that steel heated in gas mixtures containing ammonia (NH3) takes up much larger quantities of nitrogen than steel heated in nitrogen, both gases having a total pressure of 1 atm;' this phenomenon can presumably be attributed to the catalytic decomposition of NH3 on the steel surface to furnish nascent (monatomic) nitrogen. This process was studied bv Brunauer. Jefferson, Emmett, and Hend-ricks at furnace temperatures of 752" and 831°F2 using mixtures of NH3 in Hz. Englehardt and wagner3 reported that, at a furnace temperature of 914°F and under their experimental conditions, both nitriding and denitriding were controlled by the rate of gas-metal reactions at a steel surface rather than by the rate of diffusion of nitrogen in iron. The present study was undertaken to obtain information on the kinetics of nitriding low-carbon steel strip at higher temperatures so that practical rates for short-time strip-annealing treatments could be estimated. Variables studied included time: temperature, and NH, content in the annealing atmosphere. Mechanical and chemical characteristics of steel nitrided in this manner will not be considered in the present article. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK The samples used were from a commercial low-carbon steel, 0.0244 cm thick, in the cold-reduced condition. The chemical composition of this steel is given in Table I. Panels were cut to 5.1 by 17.8 cm, degreased in toluene, and weighed just before treatment. Four specimens were nitrided under each of the experimental conditions. A study was made of the nitriding rate of steel in a 100 vol pct ammonia atmosphere, 740 mm pressure, at five specific temperatures within the range 964" to 1358°F. The nitriding rates of steel in ammonia-nitrogen gas mixtures containing 10, 18, 26, 50, and 100 vol pct ammonia, 740 mm total pressure, at 1268°F were also determined. All atmospheres used were dried by successively passing them through drying towers packed with soda lime and with Linde Molecular sieve Type 4A. Quoted gas compositions refer to those entering the furnace. Specimens were held in the constant-temperature zone of a vertical annealing tube furnace for times of 14, 3, 5, 10, or 15 min. Gas flow rates were maintained at 3.8 cu ft per hr, which was nineteen volume changes per hour for the system used. The rate of flow was selected to provide a high level of free NH3 for cracking on the steel surface where the ammonia gas is most effectively used as a nitriding agent. The vertical annealing tube furnace consisted of a Hevi-Duty tube furnace with a 2 1/2-in.-ID mullite ceramic high-temperature tube. The constant-temperature zone (controlled within 10°F) was about 10 in. long. After each specimen was degreased, a hole was punched in one end, for attaching the specimen by hook to a chain so that it could be lowered into or raised from the high-temperature portion of the tube by means of a power-driven winch. A stainless-steel access port with O-ring seals was connected by suitable glass-to-metal seals to the cool upper portion of the furnace tube. After the weighed specimen was placed in the access port, the furnace tube was evacuated to approximately 10"3 torr, and then the system was flushed thoroughly with the atmosphere under study. When the gas flow rate and constant-temperature zone of the furnace were established, the specimen was lowered into the constant-temperature zone. The atmosphere flowed from the top to the bottom of the vertical furnace tube and was then vented. This paper presents the initial results of a pressure maintenance by water return project in the Lower Pawelek reservoir of the Falls City Field, Karnes County, Southwest Texas. Production is from the Lower Wilcox section at an average depth of 6,030 ft on the downthrown side of a "down to the coast" fault. Of particular interest is that the reservoir oil is high gravity and low viscosity but far undersaturated with gas at the original reservoir pressure and temperature. The early pressure and production history indicated only a partial or limited water drive, and this fact, coupled with the characteristics of the reservoir fluid and artificial lifting problem.. made advisable the water injection program to maintain reservoir pressure. The paper includes a description of the reservoir and reservoir fluids, the pressure and production history, a description of the water injection facilities, and the results of reservoir calculations involving Hurst's unsteady state flow and the material balance equations for calculation of water influx and prediction of the pressure-production relationship at various rates of withdrawal. The reservoir calculations and initial field results indicate that reservoir pressures in excess of 85 per cent of original pressure can be maintained by control of water injection even at very high rates of production. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to report the initial results of a pressure maintenance by water return program in the Lower Pawelek reservoir, Falls City Field, Karnes County. Texas, and to calculate an empirical relationship between pressure and production in this limited or partial water drive reservoir. Location The Falls City Field (Fig. 1) is located two miles north of the town of Falls City in Karnes County, Texas, and is approximately 50 miles south-southeast of San Antonio on U. S. Highway 181. Discovery and Development The initial block of leases was taken after a surface geological survey identified a major east-west fault and closure on the south or downthrown section. The discovery well, Southern Minerals Corporation's Joe F. Bartosch 1; was completed at 4,650 ft in the Lower Bartosch sand in December, 1944. Drilling was continuous until December, 1946, and resulted in the discovery of 12 oil reservoirs between 4,600 and 6,050 ft in the Middle and Lower Wilcox formations. TO present some idea of the magnitude of the gold-mining industry of Canada and the world, the records of 106 gold-mining companies currently paying dividends have been studied. Forty of these are in Canada, and 37 on the Rand in South Africa, these being all the straight gold-mining companies that paid dividends in the two areas in 1938. None of the base-metal companies that produce gold as a by- product, or even as a major fraction of the value of their total product, have beezl included.
