The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division was commissioned for operation in 1981. The MRS was originally designed for longwall shield research and was the only hydraulic press in the world with the capability to apply biaxial loads to these large structures. The results of this forty-year research program have contributed to improved performance and increased knowledge of longwall shields, mobile roof supports and hydraulic cylinders in the mining industry. Also, considerable research and development have been conducted to develop standing support technologies for the mining industry. The Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP) was developed to evaluate how these various technologies can impact and improve both ground control conditions and mine safety. Additional MRS research has included the performance of ventilation stopping walls including the development of a new testing protocol to evaluate the transverse loading capabilities under arching load conditions and evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground mine roof surface control. The NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator has been a reliable and valuable tool for the past forty years for the evaluation of safety structures used in mining, and this research has contributed significantly to the advancement toward safer mines. This paper will summarize those research results and provide a glimpse of planned future activities.

Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) is a method of extracting appliance-level power consumption information from aggregate circuit-level data with the goal of giving users feedback regarding their energy consumption so they can take control of their consumption habits. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm for classification of on and off states of appliances. We compare the performance of our algorithm in on state detection with a pervious paper that evaluated the same dataset and show that it performs up to 13% better. We also present the results of a case study where we collected data for different modes of a cooktop, microwave and dishwasher and used our algorithms to perform power estimation. The error on ten different setups in the test bed ranges from 1% to 32%. We discuss our results and lay out ideas for future work.

In business mining, dilution is the result of the operating parameters that occur too often and cause serious consequences to mine performance, questioning TO WHOM BENEFITS DILUTION. Mining persists in changing perception of real meaning of dilution. The lack of interrelation between mineral processes and nature compromises the understanding of dilution; this absence of interrelation occurs due to the misinterpretation of nature, otherwise, Geomimic could be helpful to filling the gap of misinformation. NATURE provides LIMITED metals in low content deposits; it is a challenge to obtain them. Nature never considers dilution. Furthermore, though dilution is a human concept, dilution is accepted and promoted. Reality of dilution is in its errors accumulation that translates into technology level or status applied in nature. It is doubtful that dilution can continue surviving if it is ?meaningless?. It will discourse: Is dilution illegal? If the change occurs in the prediction of mining will prevail a different destiny, it is important to touch the cores of the business; otherwise, it would represent repetition of the same ?negative? effects, as usual. Mining defines many losses during the disturbance of nature, from NPV elaboration to the metal recovery to commerce, demanding BETTER DESIGN. This paper introduces and applies MANAGEMENT BY LOSS, as first steps, to limit risks and uncertainties in mining. As result, the management of dilution will be obtainable under mining practices which promotes its character of SUSTAINABILITY.

"This paper examines typical visual inspections of operational soft rock mine shafts and discusses some of the challenges involved, many of which are associated with inconsistent inspection practices. The paper presents the development of a more standardized approach to periodic shaft inspections that supplement the more frequent inspections performed by shaft crews at the mine. This approach helps to keep an accurate record of changing conditions, compare conditions between multiple mine sites, as well as prioritize and plan potential remedial work. INTRODUCTION Shaft inspections, whether they are performed daily or weekly by members of the shaft crew at the mine, or periodically by consultants, traditionally involve a visual inspection undertaken with personnel traveling on an inspection deck on the conveyance, taking notes and photos. Inspections are typically required by mining regulations and carried out to identify and address hazards before a safety incident occurs that could cause harm to people or damage to property, as well as to help plan required maintenance work. Depending on the site, there can be many challenges associated with inspections in the shaft, especially compared to a typical inspection at surface. Some of these challenges are associated with the shaft environment itself, while others are related to the subjectivity of inspections and a lack of standardization, particularly between multiple sites within the same operating company. Recognizing these challenges, a more consistent and repeatable approach to shaft inspections in soft rock mines is evolving. This approach involves reviewing available historical data, comparing sites with similar conditions, establishing survey control, documenting observations and measurements with locations, and updating as-built or condition drawings. Part of this standardized approach is the implementation of an innovative 360-degree camera with a high-power lighting system that can be used either remotely or alongside personnel completing a traditional visual inspection. The system uses six cameras to take photos at a rate of 15 frames per second, with the image data subsequently processed and stitched, then joined into a high-resolution video. This tool improves time-efficiency, objectivity, and repeatability of inspections."

THE Caletones copper smelter of the Braden Copper Co. is in the " Teniente" mining district about SO km. (49.7 mi.) southeast of Santiago, Chile. From the seaports of San Antonio and Tralparaiso, the property is reached via the Chilean State Railway (66-in. gage) to Rancagua, whence the Braden railroad (30-in. gage) leads to the smelting plant at Caletones, 60 km. away at 5100 ft. elevation, and continues on to the mine and concentrator at Sewell, at 7000 ft. elevation, 12 km. farther into the Andes. The smelting plant was completed and put into commission in February, 1922. At the start, it smelted daily 750 tons of concentrates produced at Sewell from 10,000 tons of ore; later, its capacity was increased to 900 tons of concentrates from 12,000 tons of ore per day; and it is now being increased to 1100 tons of concentrates from 15,000 tons of ore per day. "The Kidd Creek copper smelter has been expanded from its original design of59000 tonnes of copper per year to over 120 000 tonnes per year. Modifications to the process gas handling system and acid plant have been made to accommodate this higher production rate and, generally, to optimize the operation.The gas handling system associated with the continuous smelting process is discussed in terms of boiler accretions and modifications to minimize their impact on operations; design changes to effect reductions in high pressure drop duct configurations; material changes to overcome corrosion and plant additions to improve gas cleaning capability. The acid plant is reviewed with references to changes made to accommodate the increased S02 gas strength resulting from the higher smelting rates. IntroductionThe Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Limited is a base-metal mining and metallurgical complex located in Timmins, Ontario. The discovery of the original copper-zinc-silver orebody was announced in April 1964. Mining operations began in 1966 with a 9000 tonnes per day (t/d) concentrator corning on stream in November of that year. In April 1972, a 108 000 tonnes per year zinc plant was conunissioned. Over the years the facilities have been expanded, such that the concentrator now has the capacity to process 13 000 t/d of ore. To expand zinc production, the world's second installation of the Commco/Sherritt pressure leaching facility was completed in 1983 to bring total zinc production capacity to 136 000 tonnes per year. In 1973, serious planning for a smelter operation began. In early 1975, after studying both continuous smelting and flash smelting processes, a decision was made to proceed with the technology offered by Mitsubishi Metal Corporation of Japan. The Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process was to be used for the smelter and the Onahama No. 3 tankhouse technology for the copper refinery."

This iron ore mine site, located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, commenced operations in 1998, with ore derived by mining of open-cut pits in Channel Iron Deposits (CIDs). A portion of the ore extracted at the mine is processed at wet processing plants that produce both ore saleable product and waste fines (i.e. tailings) slurry. The waste fines produced at the wet plants are presently stored within Waste Fines Cells (WFCs).Waste fines cells A (WFCA) and B (WFCB) are located within an Autonomous Haul System (AHS) area and consist of embankments that span the width of the pit in east-west alignments. Technical studies and design analyses were carried out to support embankment raises and ongoing development of the WFCs. During operation and development of the WFCs, a multitude of simultaneous activities took place to the immediate north and south of WFCA respectively. These activities included the construction of the embankment raises using the AHS fleet, mining of the CID to not only mine the ore but to also create future deposition space for WFCB, blasting next to the WFC embankments as part of the mining activities, seepage collection and dewatering of the pit in the vicinity of the WFC.This paper discusses the material characteristics, design approach, construction staging and equipment requirements, blasting near embankments, water management, facility consequence category and closure concept.CITATION:Boshoff, J J, 2018. This circular is part 3 of the third paper (entitled "Excavation") of a series summarizing the technical problem; involved in the production and preparation of sand and gravel. Part 1 discussed the use of power shovels, draglines, and excavator cranes. Fart 2 discussed the use of power scrapers, slackline cableway excavators, and hydraulic monitors. This circular discusses the use of the hydraulic, clamshell, ladder, and dipper dredge. Part 4 to follow will discus the use of haulage equipment, and subsequent parts will discuss the application of both excavating and haulage equipment to various types of deposits. HYDRAULIC DREDGE Judged by the number of installations and the tonnage produced, as recorded in part 1 of this circular, the hydraulic or pump dredge is the most popular type of underwater sand and gravel excavator.

(communication to the Secretary*) :-The characteristics of Prof. Howe's metallurgical papers are, that he is able, from the mass of confusing evidence on the subject, to make an analysis and present hypothetical and essential principles in concrete form for consideration and discussion. I can appreciate, from the practical side of the subject, the arduous labor of collecting and investigating the data that is essential to prepare the paper. Much of the data necessarily came from material of preceding years. of manufacture in which there was allowed time for chemical reactions of the recarburizer, and for the elimination of the oxidation-products before teeming the ingots. This condition gave a favorable tinge-element to free the metal from slag- and other impurities, but, in allowing the. ingot to cool before charging in the furnace, the time-element entered as a detrimental factor in the development of the pipe or shrinkage-cavities, which gave an ingot-structure deficient in soundness. The interpretations from such material must be made with due allowances for the methods of manufacture, and must be given proper weight, as general facts, in subsequent arguments. The difficulties under which investigators labor are not easily surmounted in differentiating between reliable and unreliable data incident to variables of methods of manufacture, chemical composition of the alloys of steel, mediocre practice and that of the highest state of the art. The electrochemical reduction of aluminum chloride to aluminum was investigated in a closed, two-compartment cell utilizing a molten chloride electrolyte. The externally heated cell was divided into a reduction compartment and a combination AICl3 feed and metal removal compartment. Aluminum was deposited at 700° C on a molten aluminum catbode from a KCI-NaCI-AICI3 electrolyte. The AICl3 content of the electrolyte was replenished by either vapor or solid additions. The chlorine evolved was collected and measured to give a quantitative evaluation of AICl3 reduction. The effects of anode and cathode current densities and AIC13 concentration on anode current efficiencies were studiedo A range of 64 to 84 percent anode current efficiency was obtained with the 25-pound electrolyte capacity cell and related auxiliary equipment.

A growing demand within the minerals industry for sustainable development and the introduction of carbon taxes have resulted in a significant focus on improving the energy efficiency of comminution circuits. However, in this drive for improved energy efficiency the role of classification has been overlooked. Inefficient classification and large recirculating loads reduce circuit capacity, result in over-grinding and higher specific energy consumption.It is well understood that classification increases mill capacity; therefore, closed ball mill-cyclone circuits have become an industry standard. However, due to limitations in cyclone classification efficiency, the optimum recirculating load is limited to about 250 per cent. A simple relationship quantifying the effect of classification efficiency and recirculating load on grinding circuit capacity is presented in this paper. The possibility of improving the capacity of ball mill circuits by improving classification efficiency is discussed, considering the current practical limitations of classification equipment. Simulation tools were used to evaluate circuits with cyclones and with high frequency screens to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency. The investigation also identified potential benefits to flotation recovery due to a reduction in over-grinding.CITATION:Jankovic, A and Valery, W, 2012. Austenitic stainless steels are widely known for their good weldability, excellent mechanical properties for deep drawing and superior corrosion resistance in environments where most of the metals fail. Their uses include many applications subjected to a combination of mechanical and corrosive wear, such as pumps, valves and surgical implants. Although their corrosion resistance has been largely investigated, their resistance to mechanical wear is less studied. In particular, their performance under conditions involving combined corrosive and mechanical wear is not well understood. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the effect of the mechanical component on the electrochemical signal of an anodic polarization curve. A test rig was developed to investigate micro-abrasion-corrosion using a fixed ball configuration. Tests were carried out using stainless steel AISI 304 samples and 25.4 mm zirconia balls as counter bodies. The electrolyte was a 1N H2SO4 solution with SiO2 as abrasive dispersed at the concentration of 10 wt%. The results showed an increase in current density when the counter face roughness and the normal load applied during the tests are increased, evidencing a mechanical influence on the surface activity of this material in a corrosive environment.

Since its introduction 40 years ago, the compartmental model of flotation has been used to predict the performance of mechanical flotation cells. However, it has found limited success for modeling dual-chamber machines and, as a result, engineers have adopted empirical correction factors usually derived from field audits of industrial cells to predict the performance of dual-chamber flotation cells. This paper introduces an extension of the compartmental model that applies to both single- and dual-chamber cells. The model is tested against pilot test work performed at Capstone’s Pinto Valley concentrator, and then used to evaluate the key operating and design parameters of dual chamber flotation cells. The results suggest that the design of the mixing chamber — for example, whether it is pneumatic or mechanically agitated — is not a significant contributor to overall machine performance. The work also suggests that the highest recoveries are achieved when the froth recovery is high, and longer separation chamber residence times and/or higher internal circulating loads are only beneficial when the froth recovery is low. Lastly, the results show that the single most important driver of the machine performance is the froth recovery of the separation chamber.

A series of evaluations is being made to determine the relative processing costs of producing metallurgical-grade alumina from low-grade aluminous materials. These evaluations include the estimated operating and capital costs as well as recommendations for additional research and development to improve the processes and to lower their costs. The design for each process is based on published work. The three processes considered in this evaluation are designed to leach alumina as aluminum sulfate from calcined clay with sulfuric acid and to remove the silica residue by filtration. The filtrate from leaching is then purified by one of the following methods: Removal of iron in electrolytic cells using mercury cathodes; removal of iron by chemical precipitation through the formation of an iron-manganese complex; or precipitation of the alumina from an aqueous-ethanol solution, leaving iron in solution. Both the operating and capital costs for these processes are higher than those for the Bayer process. For plants producing 1,000 tons of alumina a day, the estimated operating costs per ton of alumina are: Electrolytic iron-removal process........... $81.35 Chemical iron-.removal process............... 82.08 Ethanol purification process............... 86.17 The investment in mercury is not part of the operating cost since this cost is considered equivalent to catalyst cost which would not be shown. The estimated capital investments for 1,000- ton-per- day plants on a Marshall and Stevens chemical equipment index basis of 240.0 are: Electrolytic iron-removal process...... $116,775,500 Chemical iron-removal process............... 99,418,900 Ethanol purification process................ 94,210,200 These investments include the working capital but not the land for each of the processes. Included in the electrolytic iron-removal process is an investment of $4,859,400 for mercury. Investigation of other methods for removing iron, of the decomposition operation, and of the leaching operation could reduce these costs.

Mitsui Aluminium Co. of Japan announced that it would finance 25 percent of the construction costs for the 217,000 ton-per-year primary aluminum smelter being built by Alumax, Inc. at Holly, SC. Mitsui would receive 25 percent of the plant's production in return. Construction on the smelter began early in 1978, and is scheduled to be completed in 1981. The Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) announced plans to restart a third potline at its Point Comfort, TX primary aluminum smelter in July. The company previously announced plans to restart two potlines at the facility in May. Reynolds Metals Co. began preparations to restart primary aluminum production in May in one of two 57,000 ton-per-year potlines at its Corpus Christi, TX smelter. The plant has been closed since 1975.

The launch of a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) is one of the most challenging activity parts of the construction of a tunnel. Challenges are coming from limited space available, learning curve, concurrence of other activities and in some cases from the geological conditions. Launching a TBM is an extraordinary and complicated operation requiring a great level of planning. The Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM named “Chris” was successfully launched for the Northeast Boundary Tunnel, the largest component of the Clean Rivers Project in Washington, DC. Due to space and time constraints, the 8-meter diameter TBM was launched from a single 20-meter diameter shaft, with a 30-meter-long tail tunnel by means of umbilical connections. This paper presents the steps followed during the TBM assembly and launching to complete the excavation of the initial drive of the tunnel maintaining high level of efficiency and quality despite the space constraints. Specifically, it focuses on the methods and phases used to extract the excavated material (muck) from the TBM and from the tunnel, to supply consumables, precast rings and backfill grout. The paper presents results in terms of productivity, lesson learned and possible alternatives to be considered in similar conditions.

Anglovaal Minerals acquired the Nkana slag dump from Zambia Consolidated Copper mines (ZCCM) in 1998 and embarked on an ambitious project to pioneer the recovery of cobalt from slag using DC smelting technology. Anglovaal Research Laboratories performed initial pioneering smelting tests in a 250 kW DC furnace over a 3-year period before engaging Mintek for three piloting campaigns at the 1.5 MW level. Mintek had previously developed a reductive smelting process, patented in 1995, using a DC arc furnace for the recovery of cobalt from slags. The results of the pilot-plant test campaigns were used as the basis for engineering the commercial 40 MW operation installed at Chambishi Metals plc in Zambia in 2001. This paper traces the development of understanding of the metallurgical fundamentals ultimately used to predict furnace performance, reviews some of the extreme technical challenges faced, how solutions were identified and highlights some of the critical issues identified during piloting and how these impacted both positively and negatively on the final commercial operation.

Coal mining operations are large-scale, long-term frameworks of high complexity. Mining organizations accumulate, develop, and leverage knowledge from diverse scientific and technological fields as a result of these operations. Both practical experience and existing literature indicate that knowledge management (KM) methods within the mining industry primarily target solving immediate technical challenges and operational requirements. However, they are not commonly regarded as strategic tools to enhance the performance and competitiveness of mining companies. Empirical evidence from the Greek mining industry suggests that the management of available knowledge is intricate, less effective, and dysfunctional. This paper presents a methodology based on the principles of quantitative research (QNR), collaboratively conducted with a group of mining experts, to assess the KM landscape in the Greek mining industry. The methodology involves a structured data collection framework using questionnaires, subsequent statistical analysis, a discussion on critical methodological aspects, and an interpretation of results focusing on key aspects useful for planners and designers of KM systems in the mining industry. Finally, the paper concludes by summarizing the methodology’s outcomes and proposing further perspectives for research.
