AMAX has developed a chloride refining process to produce pure nickel and cobalt metals from mixed sulfide .precipitates, Metal chloride solutions, generated in a hydrochloric acid leaching step and purified in a solvent extraction circuit, are converted to metal oxides .and HCI gas by pyrohydrolysis. A pilot plant consisting of a 30-inch diameter fluidized bed reactor and other ancillary units was designed, constructed, and operated for over one year. Process design was aimed at minimizing energy consumption, maximizing conversion efficiency, and achieving simplicity of operation and control. The operation provided valuable information on process scale up parameters, process control strategies, and materials of construction., Several process variables such as bed temperature, solution composition, solution feeding system, bed particle size distribution, and fines recycle system were investigated to determine their effects on process efficiency and the physical and chemical characteristics of the product.

It is well-known that the particle breakage mode that occurs in a semi-autogenous mill is significantly different from that which occurs in a ball mill, enough so to warrant very different lab scale breakage tests and scale-up models. This phenomenon, at the plant scale, leads to changing process constraints depending on the particular properties of the ore. For example, hard or coarse ores might bottleneck the SAG/AG mill throughput, while the ball mills might constrain throughput when milling soft or fine ores. Because the power draw of a ball mill is fairly constant compared to that of a SAG/AG mill, periods of SAG/AG mill bottlenecks lead to increased ball mill circuit specific energy consumption and a finer grinding circuit product size, which together constitute a loss of efficiency of the overall process. Because HPGR circuit throughput is less sensitive to changes in ore hardness, this situation is less common or severe in those circuits. Furthermore, the ball mills are somewhat decoupled from the upstream crushing circuits through the use of surge bins, which also helps to mitigate this effect. As a result, ore hardness variability constitutes a significant cost penalty that should be applied to SAG mill/ball mill/pebble crusher SABC circuits when evaluating the relative economics of different grinding circuit configurations. Nevertheless, the issue is by-and-large ignored, because most current HPGR trade-off studies are based on averaged ore hardness parameters. This paper provides an estimate of the magnitude of this penalty for a typical operation by using Monte Carlo simulation methods and plant data from Freeport-McMoRan?s autogenous, semi-autogenous, and HPGR-based comminution circuits. A case study from an in-house 96K t/d sulphide project is presented to illustrate the concept. It was found that by including variability effects, the trade-off NPV of the HPGR circuit over that of the SAG mill circuit increases to $84 million from negative $33 million, effectively reversing the original decision of selecting a SAG mill circuit for the fixed hardness case.

"Acid mine drainage (AMD) is produced when exposed pyrite (FeS2) reacts with air and water to form an acidic solution that usually contain contaminant levels of heavy metal ions. AMD can potentially contaminate surface water and soil if not treated. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the removal of dissolved aluminum, iron and zinc metal ions from natural AMD using water treatment residue (WTR), a low-cost adsorbent. WTR sorbent generated as waste material in drinking water treatment plants (WTP) was characterized and utilized for the sorption of Al, Fe and Zn in AMD collected from an abandoned coal mine site in southern Illinois that generates approximately 20 gallons per minute of AMD. Sorption experiments were performed using batch technique to obtain rate and equilibrium data. The effects of various parameters on sorption capacities of WTR were observed by varying contact time, pH of the AMD and WTR dosage. The adsorption studies showed rapid uptake in general for the first 80 minutes for Fe and Zn but much earlier for Zn. Further increase in contact time did not show significant change in equilibrium concentration indicating the onset of adsorption equilibrium. After the batch treatment of the AMD water with the WTR, the removal of Al, Fe and Zn were 99.8%, 99.85% and 95.5% respectively. The pH of AMD increased from 2.64 to a near neutral point of 6.74 after treatment. The laboratory results show that the low-cost WTR, which is an abundantly available industrial waste, has proven potential to significantly reduce the high metal ions in acid mine drainage. INTRODUCTION Mining activities provide the basic raw materials needed for infrastructure development and economic growth world-wide. However, it is well recognized that mining activities have been the cause of a variety of environmental pollutions, including AMD. Water seeping out of an old abandoned mine is generally characterized by low-pH with heavy loads of dissolved sulfates (SO4) and metal species such as Fe, Al and Zn among other dissolved elements categorized as toxic metals. The Bureau of Land Management’s Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) program reported the existence of about 46,000 abandoned mines in the United States. Several environmental problems have been reported to be associated with these mined out sites such as heavy metal poisoning, loss of vegetation, air pollution etc. (Boulanger & Gorman, 2004)."

From 1889, when the first railroad shipments of coal were made from McDowell County, W. Va., until today, the coals produced from the New River and Pocahontas groups have had a good reputation as premium low-volatile coals. Although there has been a large production from the Pocahontas No. 3 and. Pocahontas No. 4 beds, considerable reserves remain. This Bureau of Mines publication is one of a series appraising the Nation's coking-coal reserves by presenting data on the basis of which the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards can be determined. This study of the preparation characteristics of McDowell County coals is the second of the series to be undertaken in West Virginia. The Pocahontas No. 3 and No, 4 beds have not been included because their washing characteristics are well known.

The theoretical capacity of various ground support components can be misleading, especially in bursting ground where the failure mode is often in the retainment system. Wire mesh screen seams often peel open rather than breaking the wire strands, fractured rock often un-ravels around the bolts rather than breaking the bars. If a weak link(s) in the system fails prematurely, then the potential capacity of the system may never be fully realized. Underground observations are used to show how some support systems behave in the field. Various combinations of wire mesh screen with friction bolts, rebar, modified conebolts, cablebolts, shotcrete and mechanical rockbolts are considered. A short case history is used to contrast the performance of ?just-intime? development in a high stress faulted area versus a tunnel subjected to multiple stress changes in a similar environment. The latter proved to be a serious ground support problem when the well developed fracture zone around the opening was subjected to dynamic loading from a large seismic event causing a severe rockburst. In such cases an improved mining strategy may be more relevant than higher capacity support systems.

Recent developments in geophysical borehole log analysis using the Geophysical Strata Rating (GSR) are now routinely used in a number Australian coal mining operations. This allows development of 3D geotechnical strata characterisation models for a range of purposes. The availability of this data provides a means to identify relationships between ground conditions and ground behaviour. As a result, several new design methods have been developed to assist in the strata management process such as roof support, longwall shield design and shaft stability assessment. Information technology (IT) initiatives in the past have tended to be sold on their ability to maximize resource output and return on capital by allowing assets to be used more effectively and efficiently. Many IT projects fail, not delivering return on their investment. This is known in the IT industry as the “productivity paradox,” where increasing investments in IT do not result in comparable increases in productivity. Experiences and studies of most business sectors reveal that this paradox is rooted in the false assumption that more IT spending automatically results in financial benefit, whereas the benefits are in how effectively IT is used. Most business sectors have accepted that re-engineering of processes is required to gain the full benefits promised of IT. A mining operation has organizational processes similar to most business sectors, but unique operational processes. The lessons of changing business practice in more common business processes, such as inventory control and customer-supplier relationships, can be adequately transposed into a mine setting. The unique operational processes in mines, in turn, require unique redesign efforts. Several enabling information technology opportunities have recently become available, such as more integrated mine production management systems and tactical manager training simulators. This paper reviews some of the latest IT products and outlines the processes and kinds of change that will be required in order to benefit from these new investment options.

"Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) is a simplified, green chemistry process with applications in selective separations of Ni(II), Co(II), and platinum group metals in primary ore beneficiation processes and secondary recovery operations from spent products, scrap, and environmental waste solutions. Simplification in MRT processes is achieved by non-use of solvents, reduced space requirements, and a simple separation system involving columns packed with metal-selective SuperLig® resins. Minimal waste is generated and metal recovery is achieved at 99% levels from g L-1 to <mg L-1 concentrations. MRT systems are attractive technologically and economically compared with solvent extraction, ion exchange, and precipitation separation processes. Commercial examples of MRT use include removal of impurity metals Cd, Cu, Ni. Fe, and Pb to mg L-1 or lower concentration levels from Co streams to produce battery-grade Co. Highly purified Co is required for optimal function of lithium ion rechargeable batteries and superalloys associated with aerospace and gas turbine operations. Impurity metals are recovered for reuse or proper disposal rather than being discarded to landfill. Green chemistry processes, such as MRT, are needed in metal separations going forward into the 21st century to achieve global metal sustainability in processing of native ore and treatment of secondary sources.INTRODUCTION Maximizing efficiencies of metal separations and optimizing metal recovery rates during separation processes are important goals on the road to achieving metal sustainability. Achievement of these goals is consistent with stated principles of green engineering (O'Connor, Zimmerman, Anastas, & Plata, 2016) and green chemistry (Anastas & Eghbali, 2010). Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) separation processes using SuperLig® resins have a 25-year record of performing competitive, commercial metal separations with metal recovery rates approaching 100% (Izatt, Izatt, Izatt, Krakowiak, & Bruening, 2017). SuperLig® resins are characterized by high selectivities for specific metals over concentration ranges from g L-1 to mg L-1 or lower. MRT systems use no solvents and are simple in design and operation resulting in reduced capital and operating expenses."

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are becoming a more commonly used tool for resource estimation as they provide not only a database management platform, but also the graphical capabilities to visualize resource characteristics. Interpolation methods used commonly in these resource studies do not typically provide a quantitative answer to the question: "How accurate is the estimate?" By comparing localized measurements at several locations to the interpolated thickness distribution used in a resource estimate, a quantitative analysis of accuracy can be obtained. The technique is demonstrated with a case study from Central Appalachia.

Throughout the mining industry, pneumoconiosis is one of the most severe occupational health problems being faced. The goal of completely eliminating pneumoconiosis as an occupational health hazard was underscored by the Federal Government with its enactment of Public Law 91-173 (Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969). Under this law, permissible dust level standards will be placed at 2 mg/m3 in mine atmospheres by December 30, 1972. The mining industry is thus faced with the tremendous technical challenge of achieving this level. Two basic questions can be raised with regard to this legislation. First, does a maximum dust concentration of 2 mg/m3 prevent the occurrence of pneumoconiosis? Secondly, can this dust standard be achieved using presently available methods and equipment? A precise answer to the first question has not yet been developed by the medical profession. Studies are continuing on the origin, prevention, and therapy of pneumoconiosis, and permissible dust levels could become even lower as medical evidence accumulates. Rockfalls or significant deterioration of mine openings can have significant safety and financial impacts for mining operations. The failure of drives in underground mines sometimes highlight deficiencies in the mine risk management systems in detecting geotechnical hazards and to prevent events that can have significant impact. Consequences from these failures includes fatalities, injuries, loss of revenue, additional cost, and potentially a loss in Ore Reserves. Where the impacts are severe, it also affects families and communities linked to the operation. The assessment of underground excavations requires consideration of the full range and spectrum of geotechnical hazards, design aspects, ground support, layouts and sequences. Where the assessment of these are insufficient or incorrect, it can result in drive failures. Care must be taken that meeting production targets and personnel pressures do not result in a situation where production take preference over a proper risk-based assessment of the drives to be mined. The risk management approach is now widely accepted in the mining industry for the control and management of risks in underground mines. Codes of Practices (COP’s), Ground Control Management Plans (GCMP), Principal Hazard Management Plans (PHMP’s) and technical guidance documents has become the norm for describing the mines main hazards, risk levels and intimating controls for safe passage of vehicles and mine personnel. However, where there is a disconnect between these documents and what is actually being done at the mine site, the COP’s and/or Management Plans become ineffective (or vice versa). This disconnect may occur due to the actual content of these documents, a lack of resources, or a lack of understanding about the implementation. There is therefore a need for sites to have a documented and implemented risk-based approach for assessing underground mine development. This approach or system needs to identify all hazards and other factors affecting mine development stability early on in the design process, and outline the risk classification and controls required. To protect mine personnel and moving equipment at underground roof fall areas, mine operators typically install steel sets, which are covered with wooden blocks and backfilled with an expanding-type cement material. In large roof falls, the cost of void backfilling becomes prohibitively high, causing some mines to leave the voids open. However, the durability of wood over time and the capability of the steel set and wood lagging to resist falling rock are unknown. This has caused concern for the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and ground control engineers. During the last few years, Keystone Mining Services, LLC developed various impact-resistant steel set designs that were approved by MSHA and installed in various underground fall rehabilitations. This paper presents an impact-resistant steel set design methodology, including (1) steel set design per AISC national standard, (2) design, development and laboratory testing of a waterproof coated impact-resistant lagging panel and (3) impactresistant steel set design based on the law of conservation of energy. Two underground cases will be included detailing the application of the system.

The provinces of Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei (and most recently Fujian) were the prime exporters of barite during this period. Guangdong and Shandong were exporters too but not major participants. These are all primarily agricultural areas so there existed a sufficient labor force willing to work in the mines to supplement their income from farming. During the early years, barite export pushed the existing transportation systems in these provinces to operational capacity. The mines from which this barite is extracted are located about 250 to 1,400 kilometers from the sea ports. Transportation of the ore from the mines to the ports follows a net-work that includes trucking to various rail-heads where it is then shipped via freight trains to ports for loading into seagoing vessels. in some instances, the barite travels by truck or train to the Yangtze River where it is then barged to an ocean port.

In 1978, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey completed a joint mineral survey of the Chemise Mountain and King Range study areas as mandated by the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1916, Public Law 94-579. The U.S. Bureau of Mines examined all identified mineral prospects and deposits; the results of these examinations are included in this report. The U.S. Geological Survey studied the regional geology, geochemistry, and geophysics; the results of these studies are available in USGS Map MF-1196. No mineral resources were identified in either the Chemise Mountain or King Range study areas; however, a high-grade silver and base-metal occurrence, and minor manganese resources were identified in between the two study areas, within the King Range Conservation Area. The only mining activity in either area was a placer gold prospect on Honeydew creek in the northeastern part of the King Range study area. Three samples from this prospect contained no gold. The Chemise Mountain and King Range study areas are in a mountainous region along the coast of northern California, 230 road miles north of San Francisco, and 70 miles south of Eureka by way of U.S. Highway 101, through Garberville and Redway. The Chemise Mountain study area consists of 3,941 acres; it includes the 2,598-ft Chemise Mountain, and the cliff-lined seacoast southeast of Shelter Cove. a resort and fishing village. The King Range study area consists of 39.764 acres northwest of Shelter Cove, and includes the northwest-trending King Range with elevations above 4,000 ft. The Chemise and King Range study areas are underlain by deep-water marine sandstones, shales, and minor pillow basalts of the Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary Franciscan Subduction Complex. Mineral production was 1,650 tons of manganese ore within a manganiferous bed overlying pillow basalt at the Queen Peak mine southeast of the King Range study area. However, no significant manganese resources were found in the Queen Peak area. The Point Delgada area, directly south of the King Range study area, has prospects with high grade copper, lead. silver, and zinc. Exposures are inadequate to estimate resources; however, the metals may be associated with Franciscan volcanism (volcanogenic). The Chemise and King Range study areas may contain similar economic silver-rich, base-metal deposits.

The studies described in this paper have established that flotation conducted in a column cell provided with gas generation by aspiration into surface tension lowered water, may considerably increase the efficiency and particle size range of a flotation process. Operation of a DEISTER FLOTAIRE ® Cell at several Southwest United States flotation plants under continuous rougher, scavenger and cleaner conditions has demonstrated the main positive features to be: (a) higher capacity per unit volume than conventional flotation equipment, (b) improvement of flotation of plus 0.210 m particles, (c) improved flotation of particles minus 0.037 m.

Underground limestone mines generally lack air pressure monitoring procedures and instrumentation guidelines. The blasting industry also lacks an applicable source for air overpressure levels that are produced by blasting operations in underground mines. This became apparent during the development of a new underground limestone mine, where overpressure levels from production blasting needed to be estimated. During the development phase of the mine, it was imperative that newly constructed underground structures be capable of withstanding the overpressure produced by blasting. Therefore, a study was conducted to (1) identify and review any published studies for data that may be applicable, (2) identify the appropriate equipment required to record the overpressure levels, (3) determine the proper procedures for setting up the equipment and recording overpressure, and (4) provide an understanding of the nature of the air overpressure in a developing mine.

Eastern Jamaica consists predominantly of non-carbonate rocks reaching elevations of over 2200 m. The area is drained by a well established river network which supplies close to 30% of the sand and gravel used by the building and construction sector. Present high extraction rates and slow rates of replenishment will result in early exhaustion of this source of aggregate. A number of volcanic and carbonate rocks are being examined as a possible source of high quality aggregate which meet the requirements for all types of construction. Preliminary evaluations show a dacitic deposit to be the most suitable source for aggregate use.

Heat stress in underground coal mines is a major threat to the health and safety of the miners. Hence, managing heat and prediction of heat stress in advance is essential for maintaining a safe, healthy, and productive underground mine environment. In this study, an extensive ventilation survey has been carried out in three different deep and mechanized underground coal mines. The ventilation survey data are used to develop 3D simulation models with the VentSim™ software to predict the conditions that could cause heat stress in underground mine workings. The developed 3D models predicted well the wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT), a recognized indicator of potential heat stress, with a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.986, 0.994, and 0.993 for Mine-A, Mine-B, and Mine-C, respectively. Moreover, through 3D modelling, the applications of auxiliary ventilation and spot coolers to reduce the wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) for improving the underground workplace environment have been explored. The study demonstrated that auxiliary ventilation and spot coolers can help in significant reduction of heat stress conditions in an underground mine environment. By application of auxiliary ventilation, to increase air volumes, and spot coolers, the WBGT index in mining faces is reduced by 1.2–1.4 °C and 3.9–5.4 °C, respectively. Therefore, it is concluded that the spot coolers are more effective in reducing the heat stress conditions in hot and humid underground mine environments in comparison with auxiliary fan that is used to increase the air volume and velocity. This study opens up a new horizon of 3D simulations for heat stress management in underground mines. The outcome of this study will be useful for the researchers, mine operators, and environmentalists understanding the heat stress contributors and their control in underground mine environment.
