The flash furnace is used for smelting concentrate to (i) high-Cu matte and (ii) molten metallic copper. It is also used for converting solidified/crushed matte to molten metallic copper. This is flash converting. It consists (Table 20.1, Fig. 20.1) of: (a)tapping molten 65 to 72% Cu matte from a flash smelting furnace (b) granulating the molten matte to ?1/2 mm particles in a 103 m3/hour water torrent (c) crushing the granulated matte to 50 µm in a vertical roller mill (d)drying the crushed matte (e) feeding the dry particulate matte to a second flash furnace for oxidation converting to molten copper. In 2000, flash converting is being used by Kennecott Utah Copper (George, et al; 1995; Newman et al, 1998, 1999a,b). A second installation is being designed for the Chuquicamata smelter (www.outokumpu.com [October 12, 2000]), The potential uses of flash converting are: (a) as the second half of a flash smelting/flash converting coppermaking sequence (b) as a continuous converting alternative to batch submerged tuyere converting. This chapter uses our flash furnace matrix to determine the %O2-in-blast, industrial oxygen and oil requirements for converting solidified 65% and 72% Cu matte to molten copper. It then discusses choice of feed matte grade and other aspects of the process.

Thermomechanical treatments applied to the maraging steels include a) cold working in the austenitic condition at 650°F, followed by transformation to martensite and aging, b) cold working in the murtensitic condition and aging, and c) cold working in the aged condition with and without subsequent reaging. The strength increases in these steels are very small compared to the increases observed in conventional carbon and alloy steels. The changes that are observed are compatible with the strengthening mechanisms operative during thermomechanical treatment of conventional steels, however. Differences are caused by the absence of a carbide precipitate and the low work-hardening rate in both the solution-treated and the aged conditions. ThE 18 pct Ni maraging steels represent a class of steels which are finding great interest for high-strength applications.1~2 They are essentially carbon-free, and contain 7 to 9 pct Co, 3 to 5 pct Mo, and 0.2 to 0.8 pct Ti. Although austenitic at elevated temperatures, they can be air-cooled to room temperature to form a martensite, which because of the absence of carbon is relatively soft. On subsequent reheating age hardening occurs and strength levels of 250 to 300 ksi yield strength can be attained. These steels appear to be particularly suitable for studying the response to various thermome-chanical treatments for additional reasons other than the obvious one of attempting to improve their already attractive properties. Thermomechanical treatments can be defined as treatments whereby plastic deformation, generally below the recrystal-lization temperature, is introduced into the heat-treatment cycle of a steel in order to improve the properties. With an absence of intermediate transformation products on air cooling the maraging steels have good hardenability and hence can readily be cold-worked in the austenitic condition prior to transformation to martensite. Further, they can be worked in the martensitic condition prior to aging, and even can be deformed in the fully aged condition. Finally, it is of interest to compare their re- sponse to that of the more conventional alloy and carbon steels, where the role of carbides is important in the strength increase by thermomechani-cal treatments. The thermomechanical treatment of conventional steels has been the subject of a recent review.' I) MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The steel used in this investigation was a commercially produced vacuum-melt heat, which had been rolled to 0.090 in. and mill-annealed. The composition of the alloy was as follows: 0.02 C, 0.08 Mn, 0.10 Si, 0.009 P, 0.009 S, 18.96 Ni, 7.34 Co, 5.04 Mo, 0.29 Ti, 0.05 Al, 0.004 B, 0.01 Zr, and 0.05 Ca. Unless otherwise stated the heat treatments used were the standai-d solution treatment at 1500°F for 1 hr, air cool, followed by a 900°F, 3 hr age. In this condition, the material exhibited 232 ksi yield strength and 239 ksi tensile strength. Mechanical properties were determined by Vicker's hardness measurement (20 kg) and by tensile tests on standard 1/2-in.-wide, 2-in.-gage-length sheet tensile specimens. Notch tensile tests were run using the 1-in.-wide NASA type, edge-notched specimen.4 Fracture-toughness determinations were made on 3-in.-wide, center-notched, fatigue-cracked specimens, following the recommendations of the ASTM Committee on Fracture-Toughness Testing.4 An electric-potential technique was used for measuring the crack size at the onset of rapid crack propagation5 which is necessary for calculations of Kc, the critical stress-intensity factor under plane-stress conditions. The critical stress-intensity factor under plane-strain conditions KI, was also calculated, using the stress at which the first observable crack growth occurred. 11) RESULTS A) Cold-Worked in the Austenitic Condition. The reported M, temperature for the 18 pct Ni maraging steel is about 310°F.1 Therefore, a temperature of 650°F was selected as suitable for rolling in the austenitic condition. Specimens were solution-treated at 1500°F for 1 hr, air-cooled to 650°F, and rolled varying percentages from 0 to 60 pct, at 20 pct reduction per pass. Tensile and hardness properties after aging at 900°F for 3 hr are shown in Fig. 1. Many grindability tests have been made in the Allis-Chalmers laboratory since the tabulated results were last published.' The lists of standard ball-mill and standard rod-mill grindability tests are brought up to date in this paper, and considerable new material is added. This includes a tabulation of open-circuit grinding tests, with impact and compression-crushing tests. The standard ball-mill grindability tests (Table I) were made in a standard laboratory ball mill, 12 by 12 in. inside, running at 70 rpm, with a charge of 285 iron balls ranging from 1½ to 3/4 in. in diameter and weighing 20,125 grams. Seven hundred cubic centimeters of minus 6-mesh stage-crushed dry feed was used, and the circulating load was maintained constant at 250 pct by adjusting the number of mill revolutions for each grinding period. Tests were made at all mesh sizes from 28 to 200, and the grindability is the number of net grams of screen undersize produced per revolution. The table includes 479 tests. It has been calculated that the ball mill does 52.3 joules of useful work on the ore per revolution2 with 93 joules input to the mill. The standard rod-mill grindability tests (Table 2) were made in a laboratory tilting rod mill, 12 in. in diameter by 24 in. long inside, with a wave-type lining, running at 46 rpm. The grinding charge consisted of six I1/4-in. diameter and two 13/4-in. diameter steel rods, all 21 in. long and weighing 33,380 grams. The mill was rotated level for eight revolutions, then tilted up 5' for one revolution, down 5° for one revolution, and returned to level for eight revolutions. It was discharged by tilting downward at 45° for 30 revolutions. Feed consisted of 1250 cc of minus in. stone and the circulating load was maintained constant at 100 pct by adjusting the number of mill revolutions for each grinding period. Tests were made at all mesh sizes from 3 to 65, and the rod-mill grindability is the number of net grams of screen undersize produced per revolution. The table includes 105 tests. The impact and compression-crushing tests (Table 3) are given in a table that is an extension of a previous publication8 in which the method of testing was described in detail. Two equal hammers weighing about 30 lb each were arranged to strike simultaneous blows on opposite sides of the test specimen. Broken pieces of rock passing a 3-in. square and retained on a 2-in. square were set up with the smallest dimension between the hammers, and this distance was measured. The height of the hammers was increased slightly before each blow until the specimen broke, and the foot-pounds per inch of thickness was calculated. Ten pieces

The North Central Texas district as herein defined includes the counties of Brown, Callahan, Coleman, Comanche, Coryell, Eastland, Erath, Fisher, Hamilton, Haskell, Hood, Jones, Lampasas, Mills, Nolan, Palo Pinto, Parker, San Saba, Shackelford, Stephens, Stonewall, Summer-ville, Taylor, Throckmorton and Wise. These counties as listed are the counties of District 7B, State Railroad Commission. In the new designation of districts for the Transactions, the North Central Texas district includes most, but not all, of the counties of the previously classified West Central Texas district. This district covers the south central crest and the west flank of the Bend flexure north of the Llano uplift. The west flank of the Bend flexure is on the east boundary of the Permian Basin of West Texas. The greater part of the oil and gas produced in this district has been from Pennsylvanian strata. Some oil and gas has been produced from the lower Permian (by the latest, selection of the Pennsyl-vanian-Permian boundary) and minor amounts from the Mississippian and Ordovician sediments. Increasingly important quantities of oil and gas are to be expected from the older sediments by deeper development in proven fields and by new discoveries. Most of the oil and gas in the district has accumulated in localized, well-defined structural traps in limestone and sandstone reservoirs and in traps due to stratigraphic changes in sedimentation, mainly porosity traps in limestone and sandstone lenses, both usually associated with some structural feature. These features are found by surface and subsurface geological structural mapping, by core drilling and by geophysical surveying. Geochemical methods are also the basis for some wildcatting. The demand for sweet crude oil from this district is firm for local and national consumption, but the market price for the oil remains practically the same as in 1941. The price is not adequate to meet the requirements of the average independent operator with the continued advance in production, tievelopment and wildcatting costs. Stripper wells are being plugged daily and should be jealously saved for the future local and national reserves, especially in view of the fact that new discoveries of commercially important oil and gas reserves are not keeping pace with consumption. An expected economic disruption attendant upon the national war effort has arisen and continues in the future outlook for this district. The lack and delay of securing replacement parts for almost all oil-field equipment has handicapped and delayed operations and has decreased efficiency in wildcatting, development and production. Sufficient experienced drilling, scientific and office personnel is lacking because of inductions in the armed forces and migration to war industries during the period before manpower conservation became effective. The office personnel of the average oil and gas producer continues to be swamped by the increasing demands for reports by state and federal bureaus. An average of IQ days

I N presenting this paper, the writer wishes to point out some of the difficulties and problems of geological work in that part of Saskatchewan in which outcrops are few. These problems are well known to all geologists who have made investigations in this region, but may not be so well known to those outside. A table of the strata as known in certain areas of Saskatchewan and the adjacent provinces is given, with a brief discussion of some of the formations and beds about which there is little knowledge due to their being deeply buried and not exposed in the region. Comment with regard to possible oil and gas structures is made and some features of the structures in the Battleford and Simpson districts are described. The writer wishes to make acknowledgment to members of the Geological Survey of Canada to whose work in Saskatchewan and the adjacent provinces reference is made, and to others who have made, or are making, valuable contributions to the stratigraphy of Saskatchewan. Mr. G. C. Webb has kindly furnished information regarding and materials taken from a well bored recently in the Paynton district. Special thanks are due to the Simpson Oil and Gas Company for permission to use much valuable information with regard to their wells and for the generous way in which the officials and staff co-operated with the writer. The opportunities the writer has had to visit many parts of the Province have been in connection with investigations for the Provincial Department of Natural Resources and through facilities provided by the Department of Soils of the University of Saskatchewan. For the purposes of this discussion, Central Saskatchewan may be considered as that portion of the Province extending from Township 16, with Regina, Moose Jaw, and Swift Current situated on or near the southern boundary, to Township 48, with Prince Albert and Lloydminster on the northern boundary. This region includes territory underlain by Cretaceous sediments and excludes the southern portion of the Province, where Tertiary beds underlie the surface and are exposed to an extent sufficient to permit a measure of systematic mapping.

In-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) is an option to decrease the enormous operating costs that a truck shovel can introduce in an open-pit mine. Finding the best locations for the IPCC over the mine life will impose a new set of requirements for the mine planning. Through a two-step mathematical programming model alongside the road network, this method finds the optimal in-pit crusher locations and relocation times first and then optimizes the long-term mine schedule. The model is verified by a real mine. The results show that the truck travel time could be reduced by 500% and the discounted cash flow increased by 8% with an optimized schedule considering the crusher placement.

The work of the United States Bureau of Mines on stream pollution3 by coal-mine drainage has included a study of seasonal variations in acidity and volume of several streams in Pennsylvania. The acidity of these streams has been determined during the two or three years prior to 1930 and the results may be considered to represent "normal" low water conditions. The summer of 1930, however, was unusually dry and represents what may be termed "extreme" low water conditions on these streams. This report is a comparison of the results obtained for extreme low water of 1930 and for other years. The streams investigated were Buffalo Creek in Somerset County, Indian Creek (lower 5 miles) in Westmoreland County, Little Toby Creek in Elk and Jefferson Counties, Daguscahonda Run in Elk County and West Creek in Elk and Cameron Counties. These will be treated separately in the order given. Most of the descriptive matter and physical data pertinent to the streams and drainage basins are taken from published reports of the Pennsylvania State Water Supply Commission, 1917.4

THE Institute of Metals Division of the A. I. M. E. has joined with the American Society for Steel Treating and the American Welding Society in support of National Metal Week in Philadelphia, Oct. 8 to 12. Individual and joint technical sessions, plant inspection trips, and a general exposition to be held in Commercial Museum have all been arranged. With the coming of the Institute of Metals Division into the circle, the scope of the exposition has been broadened to cover non-ferrous metals, and exhibits of much interest are promised. Headquarters for the Institute of Metals and the American Society for Steel Treating will be at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel, and for the American Welding Society at the Bellevue-Stratford. The American Society for Steel Treating and the Welding Society will hold technical sessions each forenoon at their hotel headquarters. The Institute of Metals Division will hold sessions Tuesday morning and Wednesday and Thursday afternoons; that for Wednesday being a joint session with the American Society for Steel Treating. The latter society will hold independent afternoon sessions on Thursday and Friday. Registration and information desks will be open at the hotels throughout the week, and an attractive program of entertainments has been arranged.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines made an economic appraisal of the Buttermilk study area, Inyo County, California in October 1980. Results of surveys indicate no potential for metallic, non-metallic, or energy resources in the area. However, glacial till covering most of the area prevented bedrock examinations by the appraisal teams or earlier prospectors. No mining claims are known to be in the area. INTRODUCTION Present Studies The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Western Field Operations Center, searched county mining claim records and other data available concerning mineral deposits, claims, leases, production, and mining activity in the area. The Bureau conducted field work in October 1980 searching for prospects and claim locations. Fourteen reconnaissance lode and placer samples taken from the area were analyzed for gold, silver, and tungsten; a spectrographic analysis also was run on selected samples.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted a study of laser safety in potentially flammable environments. Researchers measured threshold igniting powers as a function of beam diameter for butane and propane-air mixtures by laser-heating targets placed on optical fiber tips using a 1064 nm laser. The minimum igniting powers for propane-air and butane-air were about 250 and 300 mW, respectively. Threshold igniting powers for propane-air were approximately proportional to beam diameter for beam diameters from 0.1 to 2.0 mm. Results suggest that relatively powerful beams may be used in these atmospheres without causing ignition, provided the beam diameter is controlled. Threshold ignition delay times using 91125 and 62.51 125 pm fibers were approximately proportional to the inverse square of the laser power. Ignition delays were about 45 ms or longer for laser powers up to 800 mW. Preproduction samples of a commercial optical fuse prevented ignitions under selected test conditions. A self-healing effect was observed for one sample. Comparisons are made with the results of other researchers. O 2006 Laser Institute of America. Damages have been observed in shafts, backfill infrastructure and the slick line at the Leeville Mine. Shaft damage (shearing and spalling of the concrete liner) is attributed to mine-induced rock mass deformations concentrated where regional faults intersect the shafts. Aggregate bin, mixer station and conveyor drive damage (shotcrete shearing, heave of concrete floor slabs and bending of a vertical steel beams) is attributed to rock mass squeezing induced by elevated magnitudes of the vertically orientated major principal stresses. Separation of the slick line has occurred do to extension of the stressshadowed rock mass immediately above the mined out areas. Three-dimensional numerical models have been developed and calibrated to simulated rock mass deformations with magnitudes similar to those believed to have produced the observed damages. By stepping through the mine sequence, models reproduce deformations at the same mining stage as when damage has occurred. Calibrated models have been used to forward project further damage over the remaining mine life.

The abstract discusses the issue of mine equipment fires caused by hot surface ignition of flammable liquids. The research investigates the ignition probability of liquid fuels (diesel, engine oil, hydraulic fluid) on different metal surfaces (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel) under various ventilation speeds. The results show that the type of metal and ventilation speed influence the ignition temperature, with diesel being the most easily ignited fuel and carbon steel requiring a higher ignition temperature. The study provides data for understanding equipment mine fires and developing mitigation strategies.

"Zircon is an important mineral for ceramic, foundry, casting, and refractory applications; and it is the worlds primary source for zirconium. Zircon can also contain large and valuable proportions of other valuable metals, such as rare earth elements and hafnium. The Nechalcho deposit (Northwest Territories, Canad), is a hard rock REE deposit, which looks to recover zircon for its Zr and REE content. In this deposit, zircon is finely disseminated and associated with predominately silicate gangue minerals. Most of the work to date has focused on the beneficiation of mineral sand deposit, which typically remove silicate gangue minerals through physical separation steps. Therefore, the separation of zircon from silicate gangue, such as quartz, by flotation, has received little attention. This work used zeta potential measurements and microflotation experiments to understand the interaction between zircon and six different collectors (sodium oleate, sodium dodecyl sulphate, dodecylamine, SM 15, K-octyl hydroxamate and Florrea 7510). The results were compared with those of quartz. This study indicated that selective separation of zircon from quartz without the use of selective depressants or activators is likely challenging. The findings suggested sodium oleate and SM 15 only offered selective flotation of zircon in highly acidic conditions. Separation by the flotation of quartz is possible using sodium dodecyl sulphate, dodecylamine and K-octylhydroxamate. However, selective separation is highly dependant on collector dosage, for dodecylamine, and the selective activation of quartz, for sodium dodecyl sulphate and K-octyl hydroximate. Florrea 7510 offered poor recoveries for both zircon and quartz.INTRODUCTIONZircon (ZrSiO2) is a nesosilicate mineral which has a wide variety of applications, due to its hardness, opaqueness and resistance to heat and corrosion. Its major end uses are in ceramic, foundry, casting, and refractory applications (Bedinger, 2017). Zircon is also the most abundant zirconium (Zr) bearing mineral in the earths crust and is the principal economic source of Zr (primarily used in alloys for heat and corrosion resistance) and zirconia (ZrO2) (primarily used in ceramics) (Bedinger, 2017; Milnes and Fitzpatrick, 1989). Zircon forms in silicate melts and can often contain large proportions of other valuable metals such as rare earth elements (REE), and hafnium (zircon is the primary source of hafnium) (Bedinger, 2017; Belousova et al., 2002; Orlova, 2007). A common chemical formula showing the range of substitution in zircon is (Zr,Hf,Th,U,REE,Ca,Fe,Nb,Ta)(Si,P)O4 (Orlova, 2007)."

Determination of the aldehyde content of Diesel-engine exhaust gas has proved rather cumbersome and unsatisfactory when carried out in its entirety in field investigations; therefore, studies were conducted with a view to developing methods by which samples might be collected in the field and trans-ported to the laboratory for analysis. Experience also indicated that aldehyde samples collected in water solution and then transported to the laboratory sometimes underwent serious changes in composition if several days elapsed between sampling and analysis. Polymerization of the aldehydes, which takes place readily in dilute aqueous solutions, may have been the cause of such changes. Because of these difficulties, experiments were conducted to find a suitable stabilizer or preservative for dilute aqueous solutions of the aldehydes that occur in Diesel-engine exhaust gas, so that in field studies a known volume of gaseous sample might be collected and brought into contact with water, and the resulting solution of aldehydes analyzed in the laboratory at some later time with reasonable certainty that the results would represent the composition of the original sample,
