This study presents the economics of the hot-carbonate purification process for removing C02. It considers three variations of the process in order to meet the design specifications, which call for a feed-gas flow of 10 million standard cubic feet per hour (std.c.f.h.) with C02 inlet concentrations of 10, 20, and 30 percent and exit C02 values of 5, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.1 percent. Inlet pressure and temperature are 350 pounds per square inch [e] (p.s.i.g.) and 300° F., respectively. Estimated capital and operating costs are shown in the following to tabulations: [ ]

Scale build-up in titanium palladium alloy spent electrolyte heat exchangers in the residue treatment plant commissioned at Risdon, Tasmania in 1971 was shown to be a mixture of manganese dioxide and anhydrite (CaSO4). The manganese dioxide was deposited as a result of thermal decomposition of permanganate ions present in the spent electrolyte. It was shown that deposition of manganese dioxide and associated anhydrite scale could be prevented by prior reduction of permanganate ions to the manganous (Mn++) state by the addition of ferrous ions. In the plant this was conveniently accomplished by injecting into the inlet line to the heat exchangers sufficient zinc plant solution containing ferrous sulfate to decolourise the spent electrolyte. This action prevented deposition of such scale for another 21 years, until the heaters were finally decommissioned in March 1992. Measurements indicated that addition of the reducing solution lowered the anodic potential of the titanium alloy by 200 - 300 mV (depending on the solution resistance), but that it was still +300 to 400 mV with respect to a standard calomel electrode. It was shown that, if necessary, a small impressed current could be applied to provide anodic protection. Before scale deposition was overcome by the addition of ferrous sulfate solution, badly scaled heat exchangers were cleaned by recirculating a solution of hydrogen peroxide in spent electrolyte or dilute aqueous sulfuric acid, after laboratory testing of a variety of possible solvents for the scale. Corrosion tests indicated that attack on the titanium alloy by the acidic peroxide cleaning solution was insignificant.

"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This paper describes the economic study of longwall versus bord and pillar mining using all continuous miners for a colliery located at the South Coast district of New South Wales, Australia. In this district longwall mining appears to be a better economic proposition than bord and pillar. The internal rate of return on investment is found to remain approximately constant for each method irrespective of life. The economic importance of percentage extraction of coal is shown to be small for high values of minimum rates of return, becoming more significant as the minimum rate of return decreases.

In 2012, in response to an increasing potential unfunded liability, the Western Australian Government passed the Mining Rehabilitation Fund Act 2012. The intent of this Act was to introduce an annual levy on tenements covered under the Mining Act 1978 based on the area of disturbed land. The fund generated from these levies could then be used to rehabilitate mining sites where all other options to ensure rehabilitation had been exhausted. The fund could also be used to rehabilitate abandoned sites or features which, in Western Australia, number over 10 000.The Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF) was implemented on 1 July 2013 for an initial voluntary year. It becomes compulsory on 1 July 2014. By the end of March 2014, nine months into the voluntary period, over $6.5 million had been paid into the fund. The incentive for tenement holders to voluntarily enter the fund was the opportunity to have unconditional performance bonds held against their tenements retired. While there will be circumstances where bonds will continue to be applied, it is the State Government’s intention to retire most of the bonds.The MRF has received mostly accolades from industry and companies that have entered. Most have found the system easy to use. The MRF was also cited as a reason for Western Australia’s improved position in the Fraser Institute’s annual survey of mining jurisdictions. Work is now starting on processes to select priority abandoned mines for rehabilitation.This paper explains the background to the MRF and its development, and reviews its implementation during the first, voluntary, year. It also discusses how the fund will be managed into the future and what this will mean for both abandoned mine features across Western Australia and any future abandoned mine sites.CITATION:Leybourne, M L, 2014. The efficient performance of Pachuca tanks is strongly linked to the suspension of mineral particles, which results from the motion of the liquid caused by injected gas rising, in general, through a central draft tube. This study reports a computational investigation on the effect of operating and design parameters on the suspension of particles. By extending the classical 2-phase drift-flux model to compute the gas hold-up, the three-phase (water-air-particles) system was simulated as consisting of a variable-density liquid plus the solid particles. These two phases were treated as interpenetrated continua using an Eulerian approach to set a turbulent recirculating flow model in 2-D and transient state. The model predicted adequately the measured critical superficial air velocity, uc, needed for maintaining particle suspensions, in pulps with 10-50 wt% solids. Additionally, the model was used to investigate the operation of industrial size reactors, obtaining results that agree well with the general trends reported in the literature, and highlighting important differences with respect to laboratory-scale reactors.

"Brattice cloth is an important material in coal-mine ventilation practically all coal mines use some brattice cloth, gassy mines a large amount. It is employed in three ways:Crosscut brattices.Curtains in haulageways.Line brattices in gassy mines.In each case brattice cloth is used to deflect part or all of a split of the mine ventilating current into or toward the face of a working place. As a general rule, its use in a particular location is temporary.A crosscut brattice should be employed only until a permanent stopping has been erected. Such a brattice is subject to little wear when in actual service, the chief damage occurring when it is taken down and put up again.When used for curtains on haulageways or haulage crosscuts to deflect the air current up into rooms or headings, the wear on brattice cloth is considerable, as mine cars, machines, and personnel constantly pass under the curtains which last only a few days or a few weeks in an active part of the mine. For such purposes tightly woven smooth cloth is desirable, so that it will not be easily torn. Curtains should not be used back from the working places, as they sometimes are, to deflect the main. split, as the leakage of air is too great. Doors should be used in such places."

Study of the distribution of minor elements between copper matte andfayalite slag is important in determining appropriate methods tomaximise the recovery of valuable metals and the rejection of harmfulelements. Boliden Mineral AB operate a large copper smelter in northern Sweden, where they had noted that the loss of silver to the slag in the settling furnace appeared to be a direct function of the tin content of the slag. This work was aimed at determining whether or not this was a cause-and-effect relationship. Copper matte containing approximately 50 wt per cent copper and small amounts of silver and tin was equilibrated with silica-saturated fayalite slag at 1250¦C, then quenched. The matte and slag were then analysed for their silver and tin contents. It was found that there was no relationship between the silver distribution and the tin distribution. The silver matte/slag distribution ratio had a value of 120 ¦ 40 while that for tin was 2.8 ¦ 0.3. It is suggested that the most likely cause of the relationship observed at the Boliden smelter was matte entrainment in the slag.

Corundum is a natural alumina (A120 ) and is next to the diamond in hardness . Except for the gem varieties , it is used principally as an abrasive , chiefly in grinding , dressing , and polishing metals and optical glass . Natural corundum is preferred to artificial abrasives for certain specialized jobs . Most of the corundum ( excluding emery ) mined in the United States came from the Corundum Hill mine in North Carolina and the Laurel Creek mine in Georgia . The Corundum Hill mine provided over half of the domestic production of corundum prior to 1900. Since 1900 , the importation of foreign corundum and the manufacture of artificial abrasives caused the decline of corundum mining in the United States .

DURING the past 25 years the steelmaker has experienced some difficulty in producing steel to meet the standards established by the metallurgist. In contrast to the past, when a chemical specification of broad limits was the only requirement, he now has to employ such tests as microscopic, macroscopic, tensile, impact, Magnaflux and even X-ray and supersonic. The development of these tests has more than set the pace for a manufacturing process of which the exactness still hinges to an important degree on the ability of the furnace operator. In our efforts to produce steel, and especially alloy steel, to meet the exactness of modern engineering specification, many factors must be taken into account. It is not sufficient to make a good heat of steel in the furnace and then be satisfied that the job is done, since there are many pitfalls between the furnace and the finished product. The literature abounds with information on melting practices, deoxidation methods and slag control, but the lack of positive information about what happens when the steel is teemed into molds is quite evident. Such questions as what is the proper mold size, shape and thickness; which is the best mold coating; what is the best rate of pour for any given steel, and what is the effect of cooling rates on quality, are still answered by opinions. It is acknowledged that a poor heat of steel cannot be improved in the pouring pit. On the other hand, a good heat can be ruined by improper handling after it leaves the furnace.

In August 1943 the Bureau of Mines began an investigation of the West Portal magnetite mines, which comprise the Swayze and Turkey Hill properties. The work included (1) traversing with a dip needle to record magnetic anomalies, (2) diamond drilling, and (3) sampling old mine dumps; it was completed in April 1944. The deposit consists of two parallel veins, which strike northeast and dip southeast. They carry magnetite in gneiss and schist. The Swayze mine was discovered in 1867 and closed in 1889, while the Turkey Hill mine was opened in 1872 and closed in 1887. The dip-needle survey covered 266 acres. The diamond drilling comprised 11 holes totaling 4,910 feet from which 142 samples were taken for chemical analyses. Old mine dumps were sampled at 52 points for chemical and magnetic analyses.

"The development and characterization of sulphide standards containing as many as seven precious metals has increased the efficiency and comprehensiveness of micro-analyses for deportment studies using laser ablation microprobe inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LAM-ICPMS). Because trace precious metals occurring in solid solution or as sub-micron inclusions in sulphides, arsenides, and sulpharsenides are often heterogeneously distributed, a significantly large number of analyses are required. Using well-prepared samples it is possible for up to 120 analyses per day, far more than by other comparable methods. Examples will be discussed from projects focused on the deportment of Au and the platinum group elements (PGE).INTRODUCTIONBecause gold and the platinum-group elements (PGE) occur as both discrete minerals and in trace quantities in a variety of minerals (mostly sulphide, arsenide, and sulpharsenide minerals), specialized trace analytical methods were developed and applied to determine the deportment of precious metals in ore deposits, requiring sensitivities ranging originally from about hundreds to presently tens of ppb for individual precious metal or less.In mineralogical studies, micro-analytical techniques such as the electron microprobe were first applied to obtain analyses for major elements in about 1959-60, but as the instrumentation improved early attempts for PGE in potential carrier minerals indicated that reasonable levels of detection (LOD) were of the order of 300-400 ppm, depending on analytical conditions, X-ray spectral lines, and mineral matrix (e.g., Cabri and Laflamme, 1976). Eventually, the lowest detection levels by electron probe micro-analyses (EPMA) obtained for some PGE were of the order of 10s of ppm using high accelerating voltage and current for extended measuring time on peak and background (Gervilla, Cabri, Kojonen, Oberthür, Weiser, Johanson, Sie, Campbell, Teesdale and Laflamme, 2004)."

The Lewis Street CSO Tunnel is an important element in the efforts of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County (Metro) to improve the treatment of waste-water in the area. The tunnel is approximately 1,675m (5,500ft) long with a finished diameter of 2,600mm(102inches). 116m (380ft) of tunnel was constructed in soil with the balance being in lime-stone rock. Excavation was with a 3,700 mm (12ft) diameter Jarva hydraulic shield in soil and a Jarva Mark 12 TBM in rock. The permanent lining of the tunnel comprised concrete pipe with steel end-rings and a vinyl liner. This paper describes the construction of the project with particular emphasis on the excavation and lining of the tunnel.

It is generally accepted that typical coalbed gases (methane and carbon dioxide) are sorbed (both adsorbed and absorbed) in the coal matrix causing it to swell and resulting in local stress and strain variations in a coalbed confined under overburden pressure. The swelling, interactions of gases within the coal matrix and the resultant changes in the permeability, sorption, gas flow mechanics in the reservoir, and stress state of the coal can impact a number of reservoir-related factors. These include effective production of coalbed methane, degasification of future mining areas by drilling horizontal and vertical degasification wells, injection of CO2 as an enhanced coalbed methane recovery technique, and concurrent CO2 sequestration. Such information can also provide an understanding of the mechanisms behind gas outbursts in underground coal mines. The spatiotemporal volumetric strains in a consolidated Pittsburgh seam coal sample were evaluated while both confining pressure and carbon dioxide (C02) pore pressure were increased to keep a constant positive effective stress on the sample. The changes intemal to the sample were evaluated by maps of density and atomic number determined by dual-energy X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT). Early-time images, as soon as CO2 was introduced, were also used to calculate the macro porosity in the coal sample. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photographic images of the polished section of the coal sample at X-ray CT image location were used to identify the microlitho types and microstructures. The CO2 sorption-associated swelling and volumetric strains in consolidated coal under constant effective stress are heterogeneous processes depending on the litho types present. In the time scale of the experiment, vitrite showed the highest degree of swelling due to dissolution of CO2, while the clay (kaolinite) and inertite region was compressed in response. The volumetric strains associated with swelling and compression were between ± 15% depending on the location. Although the effective stress on the sample was constant, it varied within the sample as a result of the intemal stresses created by gas sorption-related structural changes. SEM images and porosity calculations revealed that the kaolinite and inertite bearing layer was highly porous, which enabled the fastest CO2 uptake and the highest degree of compression. El presente documento técnico tiene como objetivo mostrar las mejoras implementadas en la planta de cobre y molibdeno durante los primeros años de operación de Constancia, las cuales permitieron incrementar en forma sostenida los principales indicadores de producción. Se demuestra la optimización de cuatro principales indicadores: troughput, recuperación, disponibilidad y utilización. Los resultados obtenidos hasta el momento, que servirán como guía a nuevos proyectos mineros en construcción o en desarrollo, son el resultado de múltiples iniciativas de mejora y nuevas tecnologías implementadas principalmente en el año 2018.

For more than sixty years the rich oil shale formations of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming have been evaluated as a future source of petroleum. After many false starts the commercial production of shale oil is near. Union Oil and Colony (Exxon and Tosco) have begun construction of commercial plants. Occidental and Rio Blanco (Gulf and Standard of Indiana) are well along in the development of modified in situ (underground) processes. A number of other companies and groups are in advanced stages of development. This paper will review some of the major elements involved in the production of shale oil with emphasis on means available to express the efficiency of production of pyrolysis liquids and gases from oil shale rock.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated germanium and gallium extraction from an ore containing 0.089% Ge and 0.036% Ga. While previous researchers concluded that a reducing agent such as 502 is needed to extract germanium and gallium from such ore, this research showed that high extractions (87% Ge, 97% Ga) were possible using sulfuric acid alone, if the acid concentration were properly controlled. This control was achieved using a two-stage counter-current leach circuit. Microprobe analyses revealed that the non-extracted germanium is in solid solution with quartz, and therefore cannot be leached with 502 or sulfuric acid.
