"Currently, silicon-based insulated-gate field-effect devices are being widely developed as the basic structural elements in a new generation of chemical microsensors. In this paper, we discuss some of the process considerations related to the fabrication of the Chemically Sensitive Field-Effect Transistor (CHEMFET). This ion-sensitive CHEMFET (or ISFET as it is often called) can be used for pH measurements (i.e., as a pH sensor) when the gate insulator of the electrolyte/insulator interface is made of Si3N4 obtained by the LPCVD method. Effects of processing parameters such as the Si3N4 deposition rate, gas composition, total flow rate, annealing treatment, etc. on Si/Si02, Si/Si3N4 and Si/Si02/Si3N4 structures are discussed in relation to the CHEMFET fabrication. Their effects on the electrical characteristics and chemical response of the sensor are also examined. Capacitance-Voltage (C-V) measurements and ESCA analysis have been used to interpret the results. The Si3N4/Si02 double dialectric layer provides improved ion blocking for the gate insulator in electrolyte solutions with enhanced pH sensitivity over time. The stability and performance of the fabricated CHEMFET sensors were tested by measuring the pH sensitivity in various storage conditions. The SEM analysis was used to evaluate the hydration effect at the ISFET's gate insulator with respect to different storage conditions.IntroductionThere has been a continuous interest in the development and fabrication of various chemical microsensors for chemical and biomedical applications over the last fifteen years. The application of semiconductor (particularly silicon) technology to the area of sensor fabrication has led to an emergence of a new generation of miniaturized, microelectronic, solid-state chemical sensors. There are numerous clinical situations where continuous monitoring of body electrolytes concentrations such as Na+, K+, Ca+2 , etc. and blood gases (pH, Po2 , and PC02) would be essential for the effective diagnosis and management of patients under critical conditions. Solid- state microsensors can be used for direct and continuous in vivo measurement of the above parameters in most instances."

Shotcrete has become a strategic component of support in underground mines. The ductility of reinforced shotcrete makes it a safe and economic means of surface support under adverse static and dynamic loads. The ability of ductile shotcrete to sustain load at large deflections enables excavations in squeezing conditions to be stabilized and the safety in excavations subject to rock bursting, to be assured. A Shotcrete Working Group was formed to find the configurations of fibre reinforcement that would give shotcrete the same ductility as when reinforced with mesh. Beams and panels reinforced with various types and lengths of fibre were accordingly tested. A single mix design consisting of river sand, ordinary Portland cement, fly ash, condensed silica fume and gunite dust and segregation suppressant was used. Steel and polypropylene fibre varying in length from 25 to 50 mm were used in nominal contents of 5 % and 0.5% by mass respectively. Beams, panels and control specimens were shot into specially made formers. Suitable mixing procedures were developed for the different types of fibre. The test specimens were shot in a semi-dry mix process. The shotcrete was cured until tested 28 days after shooting. The fibre contents and uniaxial compressive and Brazilian tensile strengths of the shotcrete were determined from the control specimens. The beams and panels were tested in bending in specially manufactured test rigs. The beams were examined for simple supports and fixed ends. The panels were fixed in a manner that simulated underground conditions and were loaded statically under uniform pressure. The beams were loaded and the corresponding deflections measured up to failure. The panels were loaded up to mid-span deflections of 150 mm. The results are presented in the form of load-deflection graphs. The peak loads and ultimate deflections for the fixed end beams were considerably larger than for the simply supported beams for the various types of fibre considered. None of the beams tested, however, were able to sustain load at relatively constant value beyond the peak load. The panel tests showed that 40 mm and 50 mm long steel fibre and 30 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm long monofilament polypropylene fibre reinforcement gave shotcrete the same ductility as mesh.

It is apparent that coal will play an increasingly important role in satisfying the nation's energy requirements for the remainder of this century. Both deep mining and surface mining will be practiced to develop known U.S. coal reserves, but until significant improvements in the productivity of deep mining emerge, surface mining is likely to be predominant. This report addresses the problems of coal extraction and surface mine reclamation in the 11-state Midwestern coal resource region, where surface stripping of high-sulfur, bituminous coal has been a well-developed industry for most of this century. Midwestern coal markets have declined in recent years. In part this is a result of widespread conversions to more convenient and (apparently) economical liquid and gaseous fuels, but the decline in Midwestern coal use is also attributable to the impact of current air pollution control regulations that prohibit emissions of sulfur oxides and particulate matter. A part of the regional demand for Midwestern coal has been transferred to the Northern Great Plains where extensive low-sulfur coal reserves are currently being developed.

This paper describes various mitigation methods in order to reduce the maximum acceleration of the floorboard of hulled vehicles when explosive charges buried in water saturated sand were detonated beneath them. The effects on floorboard acceleration of adding a vehicle hull, several types of floorboard bracing, the use of foam to fill the gap between the floorboard and hull, and the use of foam to isolate the floorboard from the hull have been investigated. Small scale testing was conducted, which used bar magnet velocity gages to measure the velocity as a function of time of the center of the floorboard, directly over the charge, where the acceleration was expected to be greatest.

Bolting large sheets of wire mesh screen (WMS) to the roof of underground mines prevents injuries due to rock falls. However, WMS can be heavy and awkward to lift and transport, and may result in significant spinal loading. Accordingly, six male subjects (mean age =45.8 years + 7.5 SD) were recruited to lift WMS in a laboratory investigation of the biomechanical demands. Biomechanical modeling was used to estimate external moments about L5-S1 for sixteen lifting tasks, using two sizes of WMS. Full-size WMS involved a two-person lift, while half-size WMS involved a one-person lift. Lifts were performed under 168 cm and 213 cm vertical space. Restriction in vertical space increased the maximum L5-S1 extensor moment from 254 to 274 Nm and right lateral bending moment from 195 to 251 Nm. Lifting full sheets of screen (as opposed to half sheets) resulted in an average 33 Nm increase in L5-S1 extensor moment. The L5-S1 extensor moment was increased by an average of 44 Nm (18%) when lifting screens positioned flat on the floor compared to an upright position. Relevance to industry: Large flexible materials are commonly lifted in industrial work environments, and may involve the efforts of two or more workers. The current study examines the low back loading associated with lifting large flexible screens and presents recommendations to reduce spine loading.

The 21st Annual American Mining Hall of Fame Awards Banquet sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest will be held at the Sheraton Tucson Hotel in Tucson, AZ on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003. This year’s inductee, guest of honor and featured speaker at the banquet will be Thomas J. O’Neil, recently retired president and chief operating officer of Cleveland Cliffs Mining. Prior to Cliffs, O’Neil spent 10 years with Cyprus Minerals. He was also professor and head of the Department of Mining and Geological Engineering at the University of Arizona. As representatives of mining heritage, the Hall of Fame will induct James Boyd and Thomas F. Walsh. Walsh discovered a rich gold telluride vein in Ouray, CO, which became the Camp Bird gold mine. Boyd was a former director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, vice president of Kennecott Copper and later president of Copper Range.

Optimization of blasting requires the comprehension of processes including drilling through milling. The author has previously considered the role of powder factor in relationship to downstream processing costs. Recent modeling done by Lownds provides improved prediction of fragmentation based on the distribution and level of blast energy. Many recent studies have indicated improved downstream costs due to higher powder factor. However, changes in powder factor are accompanied by changes in pattern. The purpose is to segregate the effects of higher powder factor from powder distribution. This paper will attempt to use typical Mesabi Range iron ore parameters and costs to illuminate the subject of total process optimization.

Titanium alloys have found increasingly wide range of applications in aerospace, chemical, medical, sporting, power generation, oil and gas extraction industries mainly due to the low density, high mechanical property characteristics, biocompatibility, and excellent corrosion resistance. In the manufacturing routes of their finished products, welding has been a key technique used and always been a main concern requiring the stringent compliance to the well defined process. Conventionally, gas tungstenarc (TIG), gas metal-arc (MG), plasma arc, and electron beam welding processes have been used to weld titanium alloys. Nowadays, laser beam welding has provided great challenging applications for titanium alloys due to the low and precise heat input, deep and narrow fusion zone, small heataffected zone, low thermal distortion and high productivity. At the NRC Institute for Aerospace Research, some R&D work has been undertaken for titanium alloys using laser beam welding process. These investigations have mainly concentrated on optimizing the welding process as well as understanding the fundamental process-structure-property relationships. In this invited keynote presentation, the research progresses obtained and the main issues encountered in laser welding of titanium alloys will be briefly summarized.

Equivalent spring constants for analysis of footings is a function of Young's modulus of pile material (Ep), shear modulus of soil (Gs), and geometry of the footing and/or piles. Shear modulus is strongly strain dependent in soils. Therefore, the spring constants are strain dependent, which is acceptable to the Geotechnical engineers. However, structural engineers prefer to use spring constants as a function of displacement, rather than strain. In order to develop these relationships, appropriate relationships between strain and displacement are needed. Also, modulus degradation with strain needs be built into these relationships. Description of spring constants kx , ky, and kz in x, y, and z direction and k?, k?, k?, about x, y, and z directions are relatively simple. However, description of kxø and ky?, the cross-coupling spring constants depend on 2 - components of displacement and rotation. Thus, there are 8 spring constants and likewise there are 8 damping constants. Approximate strain-displacement relationships on which displacement dependant k's and c's are based are presented with appropriate equations, and a numerical example is included illustrating k's and c's as functions of displacement.

The Bureau of Mines investigated (1) the effect of torsion on yield and ultimate strengths of bolts when the torsion is applied first and tensile load is applied independently of torsion and (2) various methods of increasing the tension-torque ratio and/or narrowing the data spread of the tension-torque relationship. A special torsional attachment was fabricated to attach to a universal testing machine to independently subject rock bolts to combined tensile and torsional loads. It was found that initially installed torsion is nullified during tensile loading and the tensile yield and ultimate strengths are not significantly reduced. Lubricating various components of a bolt assembly or using hardened washers will improve the tension-torque relationship during conventional installation; however, the torsional load is not nullified during this type of loading. Hence, a bolt is subjected to a combined stress throughout the loading cycle; the yield point will thus be lowered compared with the pure tensile yield if care is not taken during installation to stay below the torsional yield.

Sustainable development has brought social, environmental and energy efficiency concerns together with management and governance of natural resources. Cement manufacturing, an energy- and natural resource-intensive industry, is adapting to meet sustainable development goals. Emission standards for cement plants and increasing energy costs have lead to changes in the use of natural resources and recycled materials. Utilizing pozzolans or supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) as mineral admixtures in blended cement or as a substitute for cement in concrete lowers energy costs and CO2 emissions. Although the western U.S. is rich in natural pozzolans, artificial products, particularly fly ash, have greater use as mineral admixtures. Pozzolans and SCMs have many beneficial properties, such as preventing alkali-silica reactivity, a common problem in the western U.S. Barriers exist for mineral admixtures in the cement and concrete industries because of past inconsistencies in quality or availability. New environmental regulations on the primary industries producing artificial mineral admixtures could adversely affect the quality and quantity of these materials in the future.

El presente texto revisa algunos aspectos del programa de salud ocupacional en las compañías mineras aplicados en el ambiente de trabajo, la explotación de minas y el desarrollo de su control. Primeramente, se describe los riesgos encontrados en las condiciones de trabajo como la composición química del ambiente, la inhalación de polvo y gases en el aire del subsuelo. Como segundo punto, refiere las condiciones de seguridad de la mina, donde se sugiere que el personal de seguridad sea el más idóneo para la dirección del programa de seguridad. Para ello, es importante su capacitación en técnicas de evaluación y control, así como la participación de los médicos de la compañía. Por último, se mencionan algunas medidas de control en las minas, tales como el uso de equipos detectores de gases que determinen los contaminantes sólidos y gaseosos, la compra de un equipo detector de Cu, lámpara de seguridad y la instalación de un equipo de laboratorio químico adecuado,etc.

Theoretical analysis of performance including these factors using a new direct nurnerical .solution of potential distribution in a network led to unanticapted indications that water would under-run the entire oil reservoir with low volumetric coverage if supplied through natural influx or peripheral water injecfion below the oil-water contact. An unusual pattern of water injection is to he adopted in this recently unitized pool to provide more uniform water flooding in that two-thirds of the oil reservoir not underlain by bottom wafer. INTRODUCTION The Fosterton field, Southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada, was discovered in Jan., 1952. It produces at a depth of 3,100 ft from a pinch-out of the Roseray sand at the Lower Cretaceous-Jurassic unconformity. The field, covering 2,500 acres, contains 54 wells on 40-acre spacing. Development was essentially complete in June, 1954, but significant production did not start until May, 1955, when a pipeline outlet became available. Within one year rapid in- creases in gas-oil ratio and early encroachment of water created operating problems in the down-structure eastern half of the field and raised serious questions about reservoir performance and ultimate recovery. The Vale Ferro Carajßs S11D project in northern Brazil is based on the movement of unprecedented volumes of waste and ore for mobile in-pit crushing and conveying or ætrucklessÆ systems. In peak years, the system is intended to handle a combined 160 Mt of material.The planning and implementation of the first such system for Vale, in a remote greenfield site, utilising the services of a range of international study, design and supply partners has provided a unique set of technical and project delivery challenges. The lessons from these are of value to the industry as the trend to remote and high-volume operations continues.This paper describes the key features of the mining system and documents the challenges and mitigations for important technical, cultural and project delivery issues that have arisen. The influence of the coiling temperature after hot strip rolling on the microstructure and on the tensile and hole expansion properties of a 800 MPa multiphase steel was investigated. For the temperatures between 150°C and 600°C the microstructure consisted of a ferritic matrix with a dispersion of fine martensite-austenite (MA) and regions of degenerated upper bainite. In all cases the ferrite presented a heterogeneous mixture of polygonal, quasi-polygonal and acicular grains. The yield and tensile strengths showed a tendency of decreasing with the increasing coiling temperature, probably because of the larger fraction of MA particles at lower temperatures and higher fraction of quasi-polygonal ferrite at higher temperatures. The elongation was not significantly affected by the variation of coiling temperature. The average hole expansion ratio showed a maximum of 80% for the material coiled at 400°C and fell below 50% only for the coiling temperature of 150°C, probably due to the larger hardness difference between the ferrite matrix and the MA particles.

O desenvolvimento dos aços microligados representa um grande avanço tecnológico e oferece grandes vantagens econômicas para diversas áreas da engenharia. Nas últimas décadas houve um aumento expressivo na demanda mundial por tubos utilizados na construção de dutos para transporte de petróleo e gás. Neste caso são utilizados os aços ARBL (Alta Resistência e Baixa Liga) que combinam alta resistência e tenacidade necessárias para operar em altas pressões. Os tubos são produzidos a partir de placas laminadas e posteriormente soldadas atendendo a norma API 5L. Em componentes de geometria complexa, tais como juntas, acoplamentos e conexões, a laminação não é a técnica mais adequada. Para este fim, o processo de forjamento é uma alternativa, pois permite uma ampla faixa de dimensões e formas complexas com controle da microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas após tratamentos térmicos adequados. Para avaliar novas técnicas de processamento, foram fabricadas barras forjadas de um aço microligado com composição química similar à de um API 5L X70 comercial. O aço foi lingotado e forjado em barras quadradas de 35 mm de aresta. Em seguida foram retiradas amostras para tratamentos térmicos de têmpera a 920°C e 1.050°C e revenimento de 150°C a 650°C. Após analisar as microestruturas foi escolhida a similar à de um tubo comercial API 5L X70 para preparação de corpos de prova para ensaios de tração. Resultados preliminares mostram a possibilidade de obter aços com qualidade API através do forjamento.

Many constitution diagrams do not indicate the limits oJ solid solubility of the silver-rich solid solutions below 200°C. Thermoelectric measurements were employed to determine this limit in the nieighborhood of room temperature. The appearance of a second phase causes a discontinuity to occur in the tkevtrroelectric power as a function of cornposition at constant temperature and pressure. This discontinuity was employed to determine the limits of the silver-rich terzinal solid solutions of the Ag-A l, Ag-As, Ag- Bi, Ag--Ge, Ag-In, Ag-Pb, Ag-Sb, and Ag-Sn systenls at 30°C. CONSIDERABLE work has been done on the constitution of binary alloys of silver. The available data have been compiled by Hansen1 and Elliott.2 However, many of the binary diagrams do not show the limits of solid solubility of the silver-rich solutions below about 200° C. This work was undertaken in an attempt to extend these limits to the neighborhood of room temperature . PREPARATION OF ALLOYS All of the alloys were made with silver containing less than 0.014 pct (by weight) of impurities. The materials were weighed out into 225-g heats and melted in a high-frequency induction furnace. The indium, tin, and antimony alloys were melted in A1203 crucibles, under a boric anhydride cover, and were poured into split graphite finger molds. The aluminum, germanium, arsenic, lead, and bismuth alloys were melted in machined graphite crucibles; they were also covered with boric anhydride and poured into split graphite finger molds. The $-in.-diam ingots were heated to 750°C and were forged and hot-rolled down to 0.1 by 0.1 in. The wires were pickled in a 25 pct HNO3-75 pct H2O solution to remove any oxygen-rich surfaces. The wires were then annealed at 550°C for 2 hr in a dissociated ammonia atmosphere. They were then furnace-cooled for 20 hr to room temperature in this atmosphere. The wires were cold-drawn to 0.0808 in. diam. The finished wires were again annealed at 550°C in the same manner as in the first anneal. Thermoelectric Power. The thermoelectric power of a single specimen of each alloy was determined against pure silver which contained a maximum impurity content of 0.014 pct by weight. The wire specimens were straightened and then cleaned with ethyl alcohol. They were then reannealed in the same way as the finished wires to assure that any residual stress would be at a minimum level. Previous work has shown that the presence of small amounts of stress has the effect of decreasing the thermoelectric power. The alloy specimen was soldered to the pure silver wire to form the measuring junction. A standard set of copper leads was then soldered to the reference junctions of the thermocouple. These junctions were maintained in separate dewar flasks which contained finely shaved melting ice during the test. The thermal electromotive forces of the thermocouples were measured at four temperatures between 15° and 45°C. A known source of electromotive force was balanced against the output of the thermocouple until a null balance was reached. The data were then expressed in terms of the thermoelectric power at 30°C. The results were then converted to absolute thermoelectric power, s303.3 These data have an average error of less than ±0.2 pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION All of the experimental data are given in Table 11. Since the electromotive forces of the binary alloys of silver were determined against the pure silver from which they were made, the resultant thermoelectric powers are only a function of the intentionally added binary elements at the constant test temperatures. This provides a direct measure of the effects of the alloying elements. The absolute thermoelectric power of an alloy of silver is given4 by:

Martensite transformations in steels and other alloys are characterized in part by the absence of composition changes during the growth of a new phase. Transformation occurs rapidly, and there is insufficient time for long range diffusion or partition of alloying elements to take place; martensite reactions in alloys thus are similar to phase transformations in single component systems. A fundamental understanding of martensite transformations in steels is impossible without knowledge of the free energy change upon transforming austenite (face centered cubic iron containing alloying elements) to ferrite (body centered cubic iron containing alloying elements) of the same chemical composition. The present paper assembles the best information available concerning the influence of temperature and composition on this free energy change. Most of the material has been taken from the work of Johansson,' Mehl and Wells,2 Zener3,4 and Smith;5 and indirectly, through these authors, from the work of Austin.6 In agreement with the generally accepted viewpoint, martensite is assumed to be an ordered solution of carbon in ferrite of the same composition as the parent austenite; only at high temperatures and low carbon concentrations is the carbon in ferrite distributed at random. The properties of the disordered solution are estimated by extrapolating the known properties of iron-carbon solid solutions into the range of supersaturation, and the free energy change associated with ordering is estimated from the theory developed by Zener. By incorporating Smith's recent thermodynamic measurements and Zener's theory of ordering, the present analysis modifies previous estimates of the free energy change associ- ated with martensite transformations. Consider a two component system consisting of a solvent A and a solute B. Let Na and Nb represent mol fractions of A and B respectively, let aa = raNa and ab = YbNb represent activities, and let superscripts 1 and 2 refer to phases 1 and 2. This paper concludes a five year program on research into the use of a portable X ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer for analyzing lead in air sampling filters from different industrial environments, including mining, manufacturing and recycling. The results from four of these environments have already been reported. The results from two additional metal processes are presented here. At both of these sites, lead was a minor component of the total airborne metals and interferences from other elements were minimal. Nevertheless, only results from the three sites where lead was the most abundant metal were used in the overall calculation of method accuracy. The XRF analyzer was used to interrogate the filters, which were then subjected to acid digestion and analysis by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP OES). The filter samples were collected using different filter holders or "samplers" where the size (diameter), depth and homogeneity of aerosol deposit varied from sampler to sampler. The aerosol collection efficiencies of the samplers were expected to differ, especially for larger particles. The distribution of particles once having entered the sampler was also expected to differ between samplers. Samplers were paired to allow the between sampler variability to be addressed, and, in some cases, internal sampler wall deposits were evaluated and compared to the filter catch. It was found, rather surprisingly, that analysis of the filter deposits (by ICP OES) of all the samplers gave equivalent results. It was also found that deposits on some of the sampler walls, which in some protocols are considered part of the sample, could be significant in comparison to the filter deposit. If it is concluded that wall deposits should be analyzed, then XRF analysis of the filter can only give a minimum estimate of the concentration. Techniques for the statistical analysis of field data were also developed as part of this program and have been reported elsewhere. The results, based on data from the three workplaces where lead was the major element present in the samples, are summarized here. A limit of detection and a limit of quantitation are provided. Analysis of some samples using a second analyzer with a different X ray source technology indicated reasonable agreement for some metals (but this was not evaluated for lead). Provided it is only necessary to analyze the filters, most personal samplers will provide acceptable results when used with portable XRF analysis for lead around applicable limit values.
