"ABSTRACT NOT AVAILABLEPRESENTATION SUMMARYIntroductionToday, light gauge aluminum scrap is melted in sidewell furnaces using natural gas reverberatory burners. The scrap is introduced into the sidewell adjacent to the combustion chamber through a submerged archway. Super-heated metal is then pumped into the sidewell where it aids in melting the scrap. From the sidewell, the flow is returned to the combustion chamber through a second submerged archway at some lower temperature. Normally, the burners are set at a designed high fire level and the scrap is introduced at a rate to attempt to mat.ch the burner input. A thermocouple in the bath is programmed to throttle back the burners to low fire if a high temperature limit is exceeded.Jn many cases the thermal efficiencies of these furnaces can be very low. With inadequate circulation, air and natural gas furnaces run at a dismal 18% thermal efficiency. If a circulation system· is added, the efficiency can jump to 28%. For a $100 million lb/yr recycling facility, and natural gas prices reaching $4.50 per million Btu, fuel cost at 18% efficiency can reach $1 million per year. A 10% increase in thermal efficiency saves $350,000 a year in fuel costs.With an increase in thermal efficiency, furnace utilization also increases. A 10% increase in thermal efficiency would result in a 20 million Btu furnace producing 12,000 lb/hr up from 8,000 lb/hr or 35 million lb more produced per year. This is a 33% increase in output.Most current furnace development has focused on burner technology using oxy-fuel, regenerative burners, etc. However, thermal efficiency is also largely effected by the molten metal circulation rate and how well the scrap is mixed into the superheated metal. Therefore, the flow dynamics should be optimized first, before installing of more thermal power.Jn an effort to understand the effect of these variables, a series of computer models were made and the critical factors studied with the goal of demonstrating an increase in thermal efficiency and production. Large-scale graphical representations of these models will be presented."

During the 20th century, the increased emphasis on worker health and safety and the advent of new mining equipment and methods led to many changes in mine face ventilation practices. Efforts by government and private industry to improve and modify ventilation practices resulted in better health and safety conditions for workers. This paper examines factors that had a significant influence on mine face ventilation design during the past century. Several “milestone” events are discussed along with the impact they had on worker health and safety. Significant ventilation research efforts by government and private industry are presented. This brief ventilation history highlights innovative ventilation designs and a consistent commitment to mining health and safety.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Hons) (Eng) (Mechanical) degree Discrete element methods (DEM) are being used to provide detailed impact histories of the particles in comminution devices, such as mills. To match this immense detail of information, far more informative breakage tests than those that are generally conducted are now required. The split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus is used in this study, as it allows the calculation of breakage forces and absorbed energies. The geometry of rock particles has been identified as significant, so this project undertook to identify the influence of shape on the breakage pattern of blue stone. Comparisons are then made between the breakage pattern of angular rocks and rounded, milled rocks for single impact fracture and consecutive impact loading at low energy. Results of this experiment indicate that although breakage for both geometries occurs over a similar energy range, rounded particles have the greater probability of fracture because they absorb more of the impact energy for a given loading. Size distributions of progeny show that five pebbles or more are sufficient to predict the distribution of most particles in small energy regimes. Cumulative impact testing shows that considerably more energy is required to break a rock through cumulative damage than through a single impact?this is of considerable importance in the light of the indications from DEM simulations that most breakage in a mill will be from cumulative damage rather than single impact breakage.

The procedures and equipment used for sampling iron ore process streams have generally improved in recent years. However, there are a number of areas where significant issues still commonly occur, including sampling high capacity streams, sample cutter design and operation, division of primary increments at the secondary sampling stage, the performance of crushers installed to reduce the particle size prior to sample division, and the sample mass that is retained at each sampling stage. These issues of non-conformance with correct sampling principles are caused by factors such as increasing the speed and loading of conveyor belts to increase throughput, which changes the trajectory of the ore stream and may result in an inability of the sample cutter to handle the increased flow rate without sample loss. Failure to sample the entire primary increment stream at the secondary sampling stage is also a common issue as well as failure of crushers to provide crushed products of the required particle size due to ongoing maintenance and/or adjustment issues. Hypochlorite leaching system is a strong oxidizing solution for metal sulfides, which are naturally associated with gold extraction. This study evaluated the hypochlorite leaching of refractory gold ore by using the response surface method–central composite design (RSM-CCD) as a statistical approach in determining the optimum condition of gold extraction from refractory gold ore. The studied parameters for the gold recovery were pH (4 to 6), concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 (0.5 to 1.5 M) and NaCl (2.5 to 3.5 M) in the solution. It was found that the maximum gold extraction of 82.46% (13.85 g/t) was achieved at a pH of 4.0 with NaCl and Ca(OCl)2 concentrations of 2.93 M and 1.08 M, respectively. The statistical analysis also revealed that the amount of gold recovery in chloride solution was significantly depended on pH as the main factor, followed by concentrations of Ca(OCl)2 and NaCl.

Water spray applications are one of the principal means of controlling airborne respirable dust in coal mines. Since many coals are hydrophobic and not easily wetted by water, wetting agents can be added to the spray water in an effort to improve coal wetting and assist with dust capture. In order to study wetting agent effects on coal dust capture, laboratory experiments were conducted with three wetting agents used by the coal industry on -325 mesh sized Pocahontas No. 3 coal dust. Significant differences in coal dust sink times were observed among the three wetting agents at water mixture concentrations of 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.2%. The best wetting agent as identified by the coal dust sink test was only tested at the lowest 0.05% water mixture concentration and was found to have a negligible effect on spray airborne dust capture. Water spray airborne dust capture results for all three wetting agents tested at a 0.2% water mixture concentration showed that all three wetting agents exhibit similar but small improvements in dust capture efficiency as compared with water. These results indicate that the coal dust sink test may not be a good predictor for the capture of airborne dust. Additional research is needed to examine if the coal dust sink test is a better predictor of wetting agent dust suppression effects during cutting, loading, conveying and dumping of coal products by comparison to airborne dust capture from sprays.

To optimise the haulage of the large tonnages produced from stopes in this high production gold mine, an ore pass and feeder system was introduced. This ore pass was designed and developed in 2006 and the plate feeder installed and commissioned soon after. Cavity Monitoring Surveys (CMS) have been undertaken of the ore pass since it was commissioned. The original thickness that was surveyed of the pillar between the ore pass and decline in 2006 was approximated to be 19 m. Throughout its use large blocks of rock were reporting at the plate feeder. This was the first indication that the ore pass was failing somewhere between the tipping level of the 9410 level and the plate feeder at the 9330. Even so CMS surveys were not taken systematically to firstly identify the area of failure or for monitoring. In August 2008 after implementing management systems, large blocks were still reporting to the plate feeder. The decision was made to empty the pass enough to carry out a CMS survey of the area. Subsequently it was discovered that the area of failure was between the decline and ore pass and that since the first survey the pillar thickness had been reduced to approximately 9.7 m. Further management controls were put in place to slow movement of the material and to limit the use of the 9410 tipping level, but this did not alleviate the rate of failure entirely. The results of an initial inelastic numerical model indicated that most of the pillar was damaged and that failure into the decline likely if no changes were made. The numerical modelling predicted that even if material was no longer passing through the ore pass interaction between the voids was unavoidable and would most likely result in instability. The ore pass and plate feeder are an integral part of the haulage system for the remaining life-of-mnie. Two solutions were sought to firstly reinforce and stabilise the pillar between the ore pass and decline and secondly to rehabilitate the ore pass or find an alternate design that could still utilise the plate feeder. This paper summarises the analysis and resulting rehabilitation that was used to accomplish this.

High stresses and adverse geology in deep coal mines in the state of Utah, USA, have caused numerous bumps. The larger bumps have been associated with seismic events with Richter magnitudes of 3.6 and greater, and in some cases have filled openings for lengths of 150 m. A better understanding of the mechanisms and stress levels involved in bumping is needed to help develop improved stress control design and bump mitigation methods. The geology of the area is notoriously bump-prone. The coal has poorly developed cleating and occurs in multiple seams that are often bounded by very strong roof and floor sandstone/siltstone beds. The overburden is formed by thick, competent strata with numerous sandstone channels This geology and deep cover are the major source of high stresses, causing bumps. This paper evaluates live common stress factors responsible for bump problems: depth, sandstone channels, arching, faults, and coal thickness. It uses ease study data from longwall panels with two-entry/yield pillar systems typical of deeper Utah mines. Results illustrate the importance of analyzing stress factor experience to allow a better understanding of the problem.

THE Talisman mine is situated on the Waitawheta (pronounced Wytaffetta) river just above its junction with the Chinemuri (pronounced Chinnemurre) river near Karangahake, NZ. The explored reef-bearing portion of the claim includes the angleformed by the junction of the rivers and extends southwards for slightly over a mile (See Plate V.). The country is mountainous both rivers flowing through precipitous gorges.The trig. station on Karangahake mountain is almost directly above the workings on the Bonanza section and is 1680 ft. above river level, the adit from the gorge giving 1200 ft. of backs measured vertically. The officers of the N.Z. Geological Survey are engaged in a detailed survey of the Waihi district and the rocks of Karangahake are under examination. The rocks of the district are andesites and dacites much altered and silicified. One of these exhibits a columnar structure in the mass in the Waitawheta gorge near the surface workings on Taukani hill, also on the southern bank...

Though these projects requires a high capital investment, the returns are regular with minimum maintenance after commissioning of the project and are ecofriendly. The hydropower potential of the country is estimated at 30,000MW, out of which around 5% has been harnessed.

An investigation of earthquake hazard in Papua New Guinea (PNG) by a yearly extreme magnitude method using the magnitude 7 earthquake record since 1900 shows that the Bougain-ville Island seismic zone is by far the most active, followed by the New Britain and northern mainland PNG regions. Return period for magnitude 7.0 earthquakes occurring in normalized 10,000km2 areas of the Bougainville Island, New Britain, Huon, West Bismarck, North Sepik and Ramu seismic zones is 37, 60, 81, 88, 125 and 125 years respectively. These areas are much more active than the California Seismic Zone 4 region including the San Andreas Fault, which has a normalized magnitude 7.0 return period of 299 years, calcul-ated here by the same method.Only southern PNG, including the Papuan Fold Belt and most of the Bismarck Sea, are less active than California Zone 4. The Papuan Fold Belt is only marginally less active than California Zone 4, but more active than the State of California taken as a whole.

Discovery of a deposit of magnetite ore estimated at 3 million tons and of quality sufficient to warrant mining has been located near Reading, Pa. by the Bethlehem Steel Corp. Last January; the company spent nearly $400,000 for about 1750 acres of farm land which had been valued at only about $50 per acre. It is expected that a pilot shaft 18 in. in diam will be sunk some time this spring. The ore body, delimited by diamond-drilling by Sprague Henwood, is said to measure roughly 2000 sq ft and 1000 ft thick, beginning 1500 ft below the earth's surface. In a continuing search for strategic minerals, the Atomic Energy Commission expects to put eight to ten diamond drilling rigs into the area 11 miles southwest of Blanding, San Juan Co., Utah early this year. The Commission's primary objective is the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation. Holes 140 ft deep are expected to be drilled, with solid bit drilling through overburden, mudstone, shale and sandstone overlying the area.

(written discussion *).-The principle involved in the Crowe vacuum precipitation process is so elementary and the apparatus required is so simple, that the whole subject affords scant material for a technical discussion. As. one prominent Colorado metallurgist recently remarked when asked to contribute to this paper: "The Crowe process is the biggest step forward since the early clays of the cyanide process, but there is nothing to write about; just put it in your mill and try it." The writer confesses to a similar feeling, but having been closely identified with the process since its inception in 1916, he is perhaps in a position to at least comment on the theory involved and to record some of the results that have been achieved in actual practise. One hundred and twenty miles of hard travel over steep ridges almost due east from Fayetteville, on the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad, about 100 miles from Eureka Hot Springs, or 75 miles northwest from Batesville, will bring the traveller to the waters of the Buffalo Fork of the White river, in a wild, thinlysettled, heavily-timbered country, now being prospected quite actively for zinc, and known as the Buffalo or Rush Creek district. Excepting here and there a piece of bottom land, patented before the discovery of zinc, the land is unoccupied Government land, and subject to entry under the United States mineral laws. Claims are now being taken, 600 by 1500 feet, but a movement made this summer, if successful, will largely modify the position of claim-holders. (communication to the Secretary*). -I have read this paper with considerable interest and agree perfectly with Mr. Kranz that steel for castings made in an electric furnace is not necessarily, because of that fact, all good steel, and also that the qualities which he mentions, such as absence of segregation, elimination of `sulphur, great tenacity, etc., can be obtained in an electric furnace if operated under proper metallurgical conditions. An unusually low content of sulphur in steel for castings is not, of course, an absolute necessity and the range of this element usually obtained in steel made in basic open-hearth furnaces is sufficiently low to meet all physical requirements. La aplicación del concreto lanzado como metodología de sostenimiento subterráneo data del siglo pasado. Sin embargo, su aplicación se encuentra vigente especialmente en calidades de roca de pobre a muy pobre, según la clasificación de Bieniawski. En este sentido, el objetivo del presente trabajo es hallar la mejor opción técnico-económica para el transporte de concreto lanzado (shotcrete) en el interior mina. Para ello se evaluarán tres alternativas logísticas excluyentes: La primera consiste en instalar una planta de concreto en superficie y trasladar a interior mina mediante mixers; la segunda, en establecer una planta de concreto en interior mina en el centro de gravedad de las operaciones y la tercera, en instalar una planta en superficie y enviar el concreto a mina por medio de tuberías. Para la evaluación de los dos primeros resultados, se cuenta con los resultados obtenidos en las minas San Cristóbal y Cerro de Pasco de la empresa Volcán y para la tercera alternativa, se cuenta con la data proveniente de la mina Diamond Cullinam en Sudáfrica.
