NO new ferrous alloys have been produced in the last five or six years that are as outstanding contributions to civilization as were the high-speed steels of the early part of the century or the stainless steels announced at the close of the World War. There have been, however, many developments of major importance having to do either with modifications of existing alloys or with new methods of treatment of older iron or steel alloys. Only a limited number of these new developments can be discussed and their selection does not necessarily imply that these are the most important but merely that they are of general interest rather than perhaps of greater importance in highly specialized fields.

There are three researches upon the specific heat of water vapor by the method of explosion that are sufficiently advanced in technique and suitable in plan to justify careful study of their results , with the double purpose of fixing the best available experimental values and indicating the attainable accuracy of the method. These three researches comprise the work of Pier , Bjerrum , and Siegel.5 The work of earlier date than Pier's suffers from obvious inaccuracy of measurement , while the experiments more recent than Siegel's , such as those of Womersley6 , of Bone and his collaborators , and of Maxwell and Wheeler , 8 are for the most part not well designed for the accurate determination of the heat capacities in question . Some of the errors to which they are especially subject have been discussed by David and by David and Thorp.

Alkaline sulfide leaching technology (i.e. ASL) has been studied, presented and published throughout the literature and utilized in some current engineering studies. Yet, the actual industrial applications are very few and the knowledge about these is very limited. Hence, a large gap between the laboratory, publications, engineering studies, and the actual industrial plant exists. Recent studies of ASL applied to copper enargite concentrates definitively bear out this dichotomy. Hence, this paper will seek to dispel the common misperceptions that continue to surround the selective industrial ASL hydrometallurgical technology. For edification of the reader, a listing of ten common misconceptions and myths is listed. As well, ASL history, fundamental aspects and a new flowsheet application for simultaneous gold and high purity antimony oxide production from low grade materials is included. The associated estimated economic considerations are also included to heighten enlightenment about the application of this industrially proven technology.

"IntroductionThe Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) located in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, in eastern Canada, was established in 1967. Its mandate at that time was to facilitate a phased downsizing of the coal industry and developing viable replacement industries. The oil crisis in the early 1970s changed CBDC’s mandate and focus was modified to increase coal production to support Nova Scotia Power Commission’s “off oil” policy for their power generators. In the late 1980s the mandate to develop viable replacement industries was eliminated and CBDC became primarily a coal mining company. CBDC presently operates two underground coal mines, Phalen Colliery and Prince Colliery, using a retreat longwall method of mining. Both mines operate beneath the Atlantic Ocean. CBDC also operates associated infrastructure — central workshops, a railroad, coal preparation plant, and international pier. The Need For Substantial ChangeOver the last few years, CBDC has been facing some challenging issues, including improving labour management relations and achieving financial self-sufficiency and profitability. Recent achievements with regard to human resource issues, especially in the areas of collective bargaining, absenteeism, and attendance, show noticeable improvements. All participants should be commended for successfully concluding the collective bargaining process with all four CBDC unions, CUPE; CAW; IAM&AW; and UMWA. However, although these changes are encouraging, even critical in the short term, they are not sufficient to ensure the long-term viability of the company. Market ForcesShort- and long-term financial realities are drawing the need for further substantive changes. The corporation has a mandate to achieve financial self-sufficiency by the year 1999. This goal can only be achieved through a combination of cost reductions and productivity gains, specifically, a reduction in the workforce of 658 and an increase in production of 800 000 tonnes annually. This increase in productivity requires CBDC to re-think the way it does things.In the longer term, CBDC faces even greater challenges. The energy market is becoming more competitive. The electrical utilities across Canada are anticipating deregulation and are positioning themselves for the resultant competition. As primary fuel supplier to Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI), the corporation will have to become ever more competitive to stay in business."

This paper demonstrates an application of a recently developed Risk-Cost-Benefit (RCB) Framework to environmental risk management in the mining industry. The environmental application of the RCB Framework as part of an ACARP project (Kizil, Bye and Joy, 2012) involved a thorough selection process with site visits and in-depth discussions with the case study siteÆs environmental management team. Under their guidance, the highest risk of environmental impact at the case study site was identified as æroad subsidenceÆ at the time when the project work was undertaken. This paper presents the unique application of the RCB Framework to examine the risk of mining-induced subsidence and its impact on one of AustraliaÆs busiest highways, with a traffic volume of 38 000 vehicles per day (NSW RTA AADT, 2008). The RCB Framework was employed to assess the optimum group of controls for road subsidence risk management to ensure highway availability while mining occurs. Whilst this paper focuses on road subsidence, the methodology employed can be directly applied to other environmental concerns including preparation for mine closure, rehabilitation planning and waste management. The RCB Framework incorporates mathematical modules which were developed to enable complex yet tightly integrated RCB calculations. The process integrates the risk-control effectiveness assessment to determine that the selected safety initiative is financially beneficial to the mine site and company. This concept has been applied to a number of high-risk mining areas targeting safety, productivity and environmental issues. This paper introduces the five-staged RCB Framework, incorporating the RCB tools RCBGEN (Risk-Cost-Benefit Generator) and RCEMETHOD (Risk-Control-Effectiveness Method), and demonstrates its practical application to the risk management of a road subsidence case study. The case study looks at potential pavement damages, in particular, the occurrence of pavement stepping on the surface of the highway as a result of vertical subsidence. This type of road damage was previously experienced at another major inter-city route while underground mining occurred in the region where the case study site is located. The RCB Framework has been successfully applied to the analysis of the road subsidence case study and determined the risk reduction and financial benefits of implementing a range of risk-controls. User-friendly RCB Charts to provide an aid for decision-making were produced. The value of using the RCB charts to achieve balance between risk, cost and productivity in the decision-making process for risk management has been explained. The case study determined that pavement slots and fibre-optic cable monitoring were relatively low-cost and effective controls applied in the mining industry for the first time at a global level.This paper supports the industryÆs ongoing efforts to manage risk to ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable) and achieve æzero harmÆ by providing a new Framework to more effectively establish the adequacy of controls.CITATION:Kizil, G V, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. The Cuyuna range in central Minnesota has been the source of substantial tonnages of, manganiferous iron ores for almost four decades. To Increase the Nation's self-sufficiency in manganese reserves, the Bureau of Mines initiated a comprehensive investigative program to determine and develop the potential manganese reserves in the region. In the course of compiling all available information on the Cuyuna range, the Scallop-Todd lease appeared to be an area having favorable possibilities for developing substantial reserves of manganese. Early drilling on this lease indicated considerable tonnages of material relatively high in manganese. More recent drilling substantiated the size of the deposit but Indicated lower manganese values. However, beneficiation tests of samples obtained from the recent drilling indicated that the material was amenable to concentration.

Este enfoque diferenciado de FRA busca priorizar la inversión en protección contra incendios, al tomar en cuenta una tolerancia específica al riesgo de incendio, vida útil de la mina y la continuidad de procesos o recursos críticos para la operación en un nivel mínimo tolerable.

This Bureau of Mines investigation was prompted by the need forr a stable anode for electrowinning metals, particularly zinc and copper, from acid solutions. The polarization behavior of Pb-Ag (1 pct Ag) anodes in H2SO4 and fluoride solutions was determined as the first step in the development of such an anode. A Luggin capillary, dc power supply, high-impedance voltmeter, and other equipment standard to an electrochemical laboratory were used in this study. It was determined that during polarization, a relatively hard, stable coating of Pb02 was formed on the surface of the lead-silver anode and the rate of formation of this coating was considerably enhanced by the presence of fluoride ions in solution. Subsequent investigations at the Bureau of Mines Rolla Research Center resulted in the development of a Pb02-coated titanium (Pb02-Ti) anode. Results of this effort were presented in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 8111. Additional data resulting from extensive testing of the Pb02-Ti anodes, as well as process improvements and innovations, are included in this report. The anodes were considered generally unsatisfactory for zinc electrowinning because of lower conductivity, higher oxygen overvoltages, and shorter in-cell life as compared with the Pb-Ag anodes now being used in industry. However, the PbO2-Ti anodes were used successfully to oxidize waste chromium solutions and to electrowin copper.

The ASTM B108 Mould and a Modified Mould were used to cast test bars under a variety of conditions: mould and pouring temperatures, mould coating and tilt. Mechanical properties were determined in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions. The ASTM Mould is less sensitive to casting variables. Enlarging the gating system and adding additional gates to the ASTM mould can improve properties in the tilt position. The reproducibility of properties in as-cast and T6 heat treated bars was investigated.

[On December 2, 1932, the Governor of California called upon the representatives of the mining industry of the State to attend a meeting at Sacramento to discuss ways and means of assisting is relieving some of its perplexing and extremely distressing problems, particularly the mounting cost of accidents which faces the industry with an industrial insurance rate for classification of $11.85 per $100 of pay roll, effective January 1, 1033. The significance of this fact is at once apparent when it is realized that the classification rates per $100 of pay roll for mining have steadily increased for some time, as follows: $3.91 in 1924, $5.54 in 1925 and 1926, $8.04 in 1927, $8.53 in 1928, $9.05 in 1929, $9.42 in 1930, $10.54 in 1931, $10.99 in 1952, and $11.85 in 1133. In other words, the cost rates have acre than doubled, wile statistics indicate that the accident rates nave shown an entirely different trend. At the meeting mentioned, one of the management officials sounded an effective keynote when he declared that a spade should be called: a spade. The perplexing problems of any industry can be approached best and remedies applied if that policy is kept to the front. It is appropriate to mention that high accident rates and a decrease in wages in recent years have unquestionably accounted in part for a unit cost rate, on a pay-roll basis; it also is well to explain that the policy years3 1926 to 1930, inclusive, are the years on which the accident-cost experience for 193: is based. That accident rates :lave not undergone the expected beneficial chance in California's experience is apparent in the words of a Bureau of Mines report:4]

In connection with the purchase of coal under specifications for Government use, the Bureau of Mines in this report has compiled data on 81 mines located in 15 States. This annual report lists analytical data on the composition and quality of tipple and delivered samples of coal collected during fiscal year 1973. Tipple samples were collected by Bureau of Mines engineers at tipples as coal was being loaded into railroad cars or trucks. Ultimate analyses are given for most of the coalbeds listed. The deliveries were sampled at destination in accordance with instructions issued by the Bureau of Mines. All samples were analyzed in the Bureau laboratory at Pittsburgh.

"INTRODUCTION Beneficiation of ores and minerals in a concentrator plant requires a significant amount of water [1] for the grinding and particle separation processes; most of it ends up being recirculated for reuse, slurry pumps are used after crushing and grinding feeding the ore to a classifier to separate fine-grained material (less than 5 mm) from coarse-grained material requiring further grinding. The lower ore grades [2] in the past couple of decades have demanded an increase on power size and efficiency of process machines to maintain a competitive plant throughput; Hydro-cyclone feed pumps to control both under and over milling or grinding are not the exception; Fig. 1 shows a conventional drive train [3] comprising an (1) asynchronous motor (also known as squirrel cage induction motor = SCIM), a high speed coupling (2), a gear reducer (3) and a low speed coupling (4) attached to the shaft of the pump (5), to accommodate the motor rated speed (typically 1800 rpm) to the process requirements (in the range of 250 rpm to 350 rpm), requiring additional components related to the gearbox: instrumentation, maintenance, disposable lubricants and filters, spare parts, thus reduces the overall system efficiency ultimately reflected into CAPEX and OPEX.WHY VARIABLE SPEED DRIVES FOR CYCLONE FEED PUMPS Hydrocyclones or commonly referred as “cyclones” are one of the most important devices in the minerals industry [4]; almost universally used in close-circuit grinding because of their high capacity and relative efficiency, the evolution of Power Electronics made affordable the use of Medium Voltage - Variable Frequency Converters (VFC) for Cyclone Feed pumps in combination with induction motors larger than 500hp (373kW) to gain multiple benefits: - Soft start with minimum electrical utility disturbance = inrush current mitigation - Full Torque available at zero speed for overload startup with pulp solidification after long still stand periods, superior to any other reduced voltage starting method. - Optimum and constant pump speed (independent of the electrical network or load condition), compared to across the line SCIM operation - Flexible Motor Voltage and Speed regardless of the power distribution Voltage and Frequency - Improved Power Factor (close to unitary), over the entire operating speed range"

Perturbations arising from mining operations significantly affect the stability of rock masses, and the influences aggerates with the rapid increase of mining-operation depths during recent years. The subsurface structures with major discontinuities subject to seismic hazards resulted from the shear-slip behaviors of rock masses. In order to identify the shear-slip regime of discontinuities and calculate seismic moment and seismic energy involved with shear-slip behaviors, we use discrete element modeling to study the shear slip failure along discontinuities in an underground mine. The recorded characteristic and properties of sub-contacts in DEM provide a basis for computing and visualizing the temporal and spatial distribution of seismic moment and seismic energy with mining operations. We computed the seismic energy and seismic moment using the numerical modeling method and the analytic method. We compared the result of summing seismic energy and seismic moment from the subcontacts of numerical models and the result of the analytic method. We confirmed that this tool can be used in comparative analyses. We also found that seismic moment and seismic energy, associated with shear stress drop and shear displacement increase, accumulate in the vicinity of major discontinuities. Mining operations at a greater depth cause greater changes of seismic moment and seismic energy, leading to a higher risk of inducing seismic hazards. Quantifying seismic potential using discrete element modeling can greatly facilitate the investigation of instability of geological discontinuities and thereby can help estimate the potential of seismic hazards.

Determination of the fusibility of coal ash consists in melting a pyramid of the ash to fluid under prescribed conditions . The conditions of the test are specified by the American Society for Testing Materials4/ and must be adhered to strictly if comparable results are to be obtained . The Society formerly specified a particular type of furnace , but with improvements in design of both electric and gas furnaces , it was decided by the Society to specify only essential details of the test . The Chairman of Committee D - 5 , Coal and Coke , of the American Society for Testing Materials suggested that the Coal Analysis Section of the Bureau of Mines conduct a cooperative investigation on the effect of furnace type and atmosphere upon fusibility of coal ash . The Coal Analysis Section enlisted the aid of a number of laboratories using the more common furnaces to cooperate in the investigation . Four types of gas furnaces burning natural and manufactured gases and two types of electric furnaces with different methods of maintaining a reducing atmosphere were employed . The results from the survey are tabulated herein , and some comparisons are made . There were not enough data from any particular furnace and atmosphere to make a reliable statistical analysis . However , definite tendencies are evident , and attention is called to them by direct comparison. in tables .

There are numerous causes of speculative mineral resource and reserve inflation. Traditionally, these are linked to issues of data accuracy or misinterpretation, the use of overly optimistic estimation parameters or assumptions, an absence of independent expert verification, or the simple pressure to increase company value, covert or otherwise. Owing to its subjective nature, classification of resources and reserves remains an opaque process. Of necessity, Competent Persons rely on personal heuristic interpretations, ideally underpinned by appropriate estimation and classification experience across commodity and deposit types. Whereas independent verification of individual resource and reserve statements remains impractical, publicly available data can be interrogated for potential category inflation, particularly when viewed with exploration expenditure statistics included in annual company reports. Abrupt changes in category tonnages and market capitalisation without concomitant expenditure can aid in outlier detection. Consequently, a comparison of common exploration and resource reporting parameters offers a basis for risk assessing classification robustness, over time. In this introductory study, an analysis of globally listed companies was undertaken over a multi-year period, examining base and precious metal projects in both preproduction and operational asset classes. From these, a series of exploratory decision tree trigger points were generated against which target companies were anonymously identified and risk-ranked.

The automation (robotization) of coal mining activities at the face offers improvements in worker safety and productivity. The evolutionary introduction of autonomous, intelligent robotic machines to perform the most hazardous tasks may become a reality within the next 10 years. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Robotics and Automation research program is aggressively pursuing the development of the enabling technology necessary to achieve this goal. This program consists of both core and applications research, each focused on the fundamental issues of robotic technology. In the short term, the research is directed specifically to the robotization of present-day underground equipment and is being performed in a manner that can make incremental improvements in safety and productivity. The long-term goal is the development of intelligent autonomous mining systems.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico, including 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. New Mexico leads domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite, and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica, and decorative stone. New Mexico has potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REE), and zircon. Other REE deposits are being explored. REE-Th-U veins are found in the Gallinas, Capitan, and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Recent exploration has occurred for beryllium in the San Mateo Mountains, Iron Mountain, and Victorio districts. Companies also are examining High-Ca limestone and High-Mg dolomite for potential development. Aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. INTRODUCTION Industrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life and they are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure, and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics and refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate every aspect of daily life, their presence and their role are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the non-metallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a by-product of cleaning natural gas, one of the world's major energy fuels. Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 40% of the more than $2.8 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2013 (Table 1, see APPENDIX). In 2015, some 240 mines were registered in New Mexico. This total includes 25 industrial mineral operations and 189 aggregate operations. This paper discusses the application of a computerised model based on genetic algorithms (GAs), called GenRel, for reliability assessment of underground mine hoisting systems. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether GenRel can be applied to predict future failure data of a mine hoisting system based on historical records of failures. The incentive of selecting the GAs for prediction of failures is that GAs are a class of evolutionary algorithms which imitate the biological evolution procedures such as reproduction, selection, crossover and mutation. The reliability of mining equipment changes over time due to an array of factors (eg equipment age, the operating environment, number and quality of repair). These factors affect the equipment's failure patterns and have complex impacts on the equipment's reliability characteristics. The failure patterns are assumed to follow a biological evolution process, and thus GAs can be considered applicable in the modelling process.To conduct the reliability assessment, a study was carried out with historical failure data of hoists in the time period from January to December 2007. Two failure data sets of two mine hoisting systems were collected from two typical underground mines in Ontario, Canada, which are denoted as the NA mine and the SB mine. The failure data sets were prepared in the format of time between failures (TBF). Then, these data sets were entered in GenRel to generate predicted failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008. The paper discusses the statistical similarity of the actual failure data sets for the period of January to March 2008 with the predicted failure data set generated by GenRel in the same time period.
