"LocationThe Gibraltar mine is located in central British Columbia (NTS 93B/9W), 362 km north of Vancouver. Access is provided by 20 km of paved road from McLeese Lake, which lies 45 km north of Williams Lake on Highway 97. Latitude and longitude of the mine are 52° 30' and 122° 16', respectively.The total area of the McLeese Lake site is approximately 1700 ha (4200 acres). This includes the orebodies, dumps, surface drainage collection system, plant site, roads and tailings ponds.Brief Description of OperationOre is mined by open pit methods and is concentrated using conventional crushing, grinding and flotation processes. Copper and molybdenum flotation occurs at an average rate of 40 000 tons per day. Tailing is discharged to an impoundment area and the water recycled as process water. Additional copper is extracted from the waste dumps using sulphuric acid as a leach solution followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning.HistoryExploration by Gibraltar began in 1964, continuing until late 1970, at which time it was announced that the property would go into production. Construction started in early 1971, with initial production in March 1972. Target capacity of 30 000 tons per day was achieved by the end of March and is currently at 40 000 tons per day.Ore reserves as of January 1, 1998 were 184 384 000 tons grading 0.31% Cu and 0.010% MoS2."

The Coeur d'Alene district in the panhandle of Idaho is one of the major lead-zinc-silver producing areas in the world. The value of recorded production to date has exceeded $2 billion. Country rock comprises six formations of the fine-grained, highly siliceous, and slightly metamorphosed Precambrian Belt Series. Small stocks of monzonitic rocks and several varieties of dikes intrude the sediments. The district is at the intersection of a north trending major anticlinal uplift and the west northwest-trending Lewis and Clark line of which the Osburn fault is the dominant feature. The district structure is complicated and comprises folds, some of which are overturned, and a complex of faults of diverse ages and directions of movement. Late Cretaceous stocks but are also probably Cretaceous in age. The productive veins are localized within a series of 12 subparallel, straight mineral belts that trend approximately N65°W and that appear to be controlled by deep fractures in the basement rocks. The mineral belts are in two groups, separated by 15 miles of post-mineralization movement on the Osburn fault. Veins and ore shoots are variously disposed within each mineral belt. Many crop out at the surface, but others apex several thousand feet beneath it. Local controls that influence the position of ore shoots within the mineral belts include the brittle character of host rock attitude of bedding relative to the mineralized fracture, and the amount and direction of movement on faults. Depth appears to have had little effect on the occurrence or type of ore. Ore occurs in a series of steeply dipping replacement veins of relatively simple mineralogy. Six periods of mineralization, ranging from Precambrian to Tertiary in age, are recognized. Abstract-Most large skarn deposits are zoned in both space and time relative to associated intrusions. Zonation occurs on scales from kilometers to micrometers, and reflects infiltrative fluid flow, wallrock reaction, temperature variations, and fluid mixing. The most spectacular examples of skarn zonation usually occur at the skarn-marble contact, where transitions between monomineralic bands can be knife sharp. Other small-scale examples occur in zoned veins and individual mineral crystals. Although, visually striking and scientifically interesting, in mineral exploration these small-scale variations are less useful than deposit- or district-scale zonation. In most skarn systems there is a general zonation pattern of proximal garnet, distal pyroxene, and vesuvianite (or a pyroxenoid such as wollastonite, bustamite, or rhodonite) at the marble front. As well, individual skarn minerals may display systematic color or compositional variations within the larger zonation pattern. Such patterns are reviewed for 14 well-studied examples of Cu, W, Sn, Au, and Zn-Pb skarns. In addition, many deposits have endoskarn or other alteration of the associated intrusion, and recrystallization or other subtle changes have occurred in the surrounding wallrocks. Copper skarns, such as Mines Gaspé in Quebec and Big Gossan in Irian Jaya, have high ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are zoned outward from the intrusion, to garnet, to pyroxene, to massive-sulfide replacement and vein deposits. Garnets in Cu skarn are Fe-rich and change from dark red-brown near the intrusive contact to paler brown, green, or yellow in distal locations. Pyroxenes in Cu skarns are pale and diopsidic near the intrusion, and become darker and more Fe- and Mn-rich away from the intrusion. Tungsten skarns, such as Salau and Costabonne in France and Pine Creek and Garnet Dike in California, have intermediate ratios of garnet:pyroxene, are more extensive vertically and along strike than perpendicular to the intrusive contact, and have zonation patterns commonly complicated by overprinting of metamorphic lithologies. In W skarns, garnet is commonly subcalcic and the pyroxene is Fe-rich, reflecting particularly reducing wallrocks or great depth of formation. Tin skarns, such as Dachang in China and Moina in Australia, also can have subcalcic garnet and Fe-rich pyroxene, but this reduced mineral assemblage typically is due to an association with reduced S-type granites. Tin skarns differ from most other skarn types in having a late greisen stage that may replace earlier Sn-bearing calc-silicate minerals, thus liberating Sn to form cassiterite. Many high-grade Au skarns, such as Hedley in British Columbia and Fortitude in Nevada, have low ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are associated both with reduced plutons and reduced wallrocks. Goldrich zones occur in Fe-rich, pyroxene-dominant, distal skarn. Zn-Pb skarns, such as the Yeonhwa- Ulchin district in Korea and Groundhog in New Mexico, have low ratios of garnet:pyroxene and generally form distal to associated intrusions. These skarns also are zoned from proximal garnet to distal pyroxene and pyroxenoid (bustamite-rhodonite), with significant zones of massive sulfides within and beyond skarn. Manganese enrichment of most mineral phases, particularly pyroxene, is characteristic of distal zones. Fundamental controls on skarn zonation include temperature, depth of formation, composition and oxidation state of associated plutons and wallrocks, and tectonic setting. Most W skarns form at relatively great depth, 5 km to 20 km, with extensive high-temperature metamorphic and metasomatic mineral assemblages. In contrast, most other skarn types are relatively shallow, <10 km and mostly <5 km, with limited, lower temperature metamorphic aureoles. A special desulphurization slag accrues during the processing of iron ore to steel, which is needed to generate high quality steel. Sulphur removing is done by different technologies, but the most common one is the generation of a high sulphur containing slag by sulphur affine elements. Currently, this desulphurization slag is partly recycled, however, huge amounts are still dumped. To utilize this desulphurization slag for future purposes, a recycling process must be established. Therefore, first characterization of this material started some years ago at the Chair of Nonferrous Metallurgy, Montanuniversität Leoben. Subsequent trials in lab scale size were performed, also some investigations for different treatment steps were evaluated, starting with a parameter study in a hot stage microscope at various gas-atmospheres. Finally, the developed recycling process concept was verified in pilot scale trials to confirm the new recycling technology. Due to the successful treatment process, also a patent was applied.

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. The cable belt conveyor installation at Craigmont Mines Limited, Merritt, B.C., has the greatest one-stage vertical fall of any conveyor installed overland in Canada. Since the late summer of 1961, this conveyor has carried more than 5,000,000 tons of copper ore from open pit to concentrator site. When the conveyor is loaded, the drive motor acts as an induction generator, delivering power to an external circuit. This paper covers the selection, the operation, the performance statistics, and the installation and operating costs of this conveyor system. Introduction T HE Craigmont mine is located in the south-western interior region of the Province of British Columbia, approximately 240 miles northeast of Vancouver. A moderate climate, good roads, service by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, power from the British Columbia Hydro Authority, gas from the nearby main line of the Inland Natural Gas Company and close proximity to the village of Merritt provide a favourable location for this mining operation. "The standard method of separation using flotation is compromised in terms of kinetics and efficiency, because of the generally slow separating differentials of fine bubbles and fine particle suspensions. A new flotation system has been developed that addresses these issues and imparts other benefits. The new technology is based on established pneumatic flotation designs called Imhoflot which use intensive in-line pre-aeration to aerate the flotation pulp prior to its introduction to the separating cell. Consequently the cell is designed only for the separation of the phases and not for bubble-particle contact. In the new system this separation is speeded up dramatically by the introduction of centrifugal motivation in the separating vessel, without the use of internal moving parts. The design focuses on providing increased differential forces on buoyant mineralised bubbles and hydrophilic fines. The observed result of these differential forces is the improvement of concentrate qualities by the reduction of the amount of misplaced material found in the froth. The commercial benefit to industry is much reduced residence time, less than 30 seconds, which offers considerable cost savings in equipment and infrastructure.Prototypes of 0.65m, 1.7m and 2.2m cell diameter size have been constructed for hydrodynamic and industrial scale tests to assess the previously established computational methods for scale up of the process. The 1.7m cell has been installed and operated for cleaning of potash concentrates in Germany, at throughputs of 150 m3/hr, with extremely encouraging results. A 2.2m cell has been installed and operated in plant trials for superfine coal in South Africa. Results are presented that illustrate the effects of differential separations by comparison with conventional pneumatic and mechanical flotation techniques. Predictions of performance are provided in the contexts of the applications tested."

"The densities of the selected quaternary Ca0-5%Mg0-Alz03-Si02 slag with low silica were measured by the Archimedean method in a wide temperature range from l 723K to 1823K. Slag compositions were chosen based on five different levels of Si02 content between 0.00 pct and 11.40 pct. The MgO content was equaled to 5.00 pct. The mass ratio of CaO/Alz03 was varied from 0.67 to 2.14. The effects of temperature, Ca0/Alz03 ratio and optical basicity were studied. It is shown that density decrease approximately linearly with an increase in temperature. With the same Si02 content, the density decreases with increasing of CaO/Alz03 ratio and optical basicity. Based on the experimental data as the boundary of the homogenous phase region predicated by F ACTSAGE software, the mass triangle model is used to calculate the density of selected limited homogenous phase region. The results showed that the mass triangle model is working well.IntroductionIt is of great importance to measure density of slag melt not only to the theory research for melt, which that is directly amenable to the structure correlations of molten slags, but also to the industrial application. Many metallurgy phenomena such as inclusion formation in molten melt and its removing, slag foaming, slag-metal reaction are closely related to the density of slag. Density is also required to estimate other fundamental properties, like surface tension, viscosity, and thermal conductivity from thermal diffusivity so that a relatively complete picture in regard to the behavior of high-temperature molten oxides could be made."

THE Magma mine, of the Magma Copper Co., at Superior, Pinal County, Arizona, is 68 miles east of Phoenix and 21 miles west of Miami, Arizona, on highway U. S. 180. TEMPERATURES AND UNDERGROUND WATERS Surface Temperatures.-The average surface dry-bulb temperature at Superior is 72.4º; wet-bulb, 57.4º; with an indicated relative humidity of 38 per cent. The average yearly rainfall from 1921 to 1936, inclusive, was 18.74 in. The maximum condition of the atmosphere is in June, July and August, and the minimum is in January and February. The surface temperatures, of course, influence the temperatures of the down- cast shafts; however, the variation between winter and summer causes a difference of only 2º to 3º in the stopes and working places that are not close to the intake shafts. Average atmospheric conditions are shown in Fig. 1. Rock Temperatures.-Rock temperatures on the deeper levels of the mine are as follows: [ ] There appears to be no difference in rock temperature for any particular horizon of the various formations or in the vein. Water encountered is always the same temperature as the rock from which it flows, and for this reason it is thought that the water is heated by the rock; not the rock by the water. The country rock apparently has been heated by the various intrusions, perhaps the vein itself, and has not yet had time to cool off. The geothermal gradient (Fig. 2) as indicated by the rock temperatures given above is 1 ½ º per 100 feet. Managing and analysing the vast amounts of data collected in a mining project effectively is crucial for enhancing the project's economic feasibility. The efficient utilization of this data is critical to minimising the time spent on projects and increasing project value. Process engineers can effectively integrate geometallurgical data into plant operations by employing analytical tools like Python, significantly optimizing the mine-to-mill process. This practical approach is a game-changer in the mining industry. Classifying a geomet dataset into units of similar characteristics (properties of the ore) is an important outcome of a geomet study. This approach simplifies data classification, allowing for class-by-class process modelling, which improves the decision-making process in mine planning and development. Classifying a geomet dataset involves using grade, lithology, and test work data (if available) to create blocks of similar characteristics, known as ‘geomet units.’ Compared to conventional methodologies, these units provide context and empirical evidence that can be more accurately mapped onto block-by-block process flowsheet development and net present value (NPV) estimation. This robust classification method reduces a project's technical risks and influences the initial mine planning sequence to maximise profitability. Defining robust geomet units with data sets with similar material is challenging due to the vast amounts of data available and the database's high heterogeneity. The methodology's purpose is to minimise time-consuming low-value-adding aspects of geometallurgy. The approach is different for a greenfield and a brownfield study, as all the valuable data in a brownfield process can be utilised to define the geomet units. Python has various libraries providing multiple machine-learning algorithms to assist in classification. The k-means algorithm is used for clustering, and the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) method is used to quantify the effect of each feature on the clustering results. However, even with automation, the methodology still requires a keen eye to account for the nuances that appear from project to project.

(communication to the Secretary†):—I observed (Trans., xxxvii., 585) that to obtain tenders from several American mills, the foreign engineer should modify his maximum phosphorus to 0.10 per cent., not as Mr. E. Windsor Richards quotes me, that no American rail-maker can produce rails under 0.10 per cent. of phosphorus. Mr. Richards claims that no English engineer would agree to accept 0.10 per cent. of phosphorus on any terms whatever. Mr. Webster writes that only after an engineer has .been convinced that rails can be made in America equal in every respect to those he is getting abroad, should he be asked to modify ally conditions in his specifications. I know it to be a fact that during recent years in many cases, as, for instance, When delivery could be secured more promptly in the United States than in Europe, the consulting engineers of several British and colonial railroads have frequently agreed to modify their phosphorus requirement to a maximum of 0.10 per cent., and the rails delivered&apos; under these modified specifications have, under like conditions, given just as satisfactory service and proved to be no more brittle than similar sections of 0.07 per cent. phosphorus rails, rolled in England under the same specification except without modification as to phosphorus. "Tunnel face instability is one of the most common issues in EPB tunneling. The evaluation of an ideal face support pressure is a critical element in the design and construction phases of EPB tunneling. In this study, measured tunnel face pressures in three EPB tunneling projects (University Link U230 and U220 projects and the Northgate Link Extension N125 Project) for Sound Transit in Seattle, WA are compared with the calculated analytical methods. This comparison shows that the analytical methods generally overestimate the required tunnel face support. The best practice for managing the face pressure in EPB tunneling operation is discussed based on the experience gained through these projects. Furthermore, the algorithm that is developed for identifying ground loss in these projects is addressed. INTRODUCTION Earth pressure balanced tunneling relies on using muck within the chamber to support the face. Muck is pressurized by controlling the advance rate of the tunnel boring machine and the speed of the screw conveyor. Target face pressure is typically calculated by using the geotechnical assumptions in the geotechnical baseline report. The concept behind EPB tunneling is that the application of sufficient face support pressure will prevent tunnel face instability and the resultant over excavation. Tunnel face instabilities caused by a lack of sufficient face support can lead to ground loss and surface settlement (Anagnostou & Kovári 1996, Kirsch 2010). A certain support pressure must be achieved to counteract water and earth pressure with an adequate factor of safety. While the water pressure can be predicted accurately, the determination of the resultant earth pressure on the face is less precise. This becomes manifested in the relatively high partial safety factors on the earth pressure."

A new optical sorting system based on a complex image analysis and high definition imaging has been developed by Comex. The image analysis is based on high definition cameras of different types and advanced filtration tools for verification of waste particles. Different mineral properties are used to identify the processed material. The system is further combined with a high speed rejection mechanism based on FPGA technology and operating in real time conditions. This provides a minimal error when removing waste particles from the sorted material.

This report is one of a series based upon investigations made and being made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by engineers of the Bureau of Mines , Albany Branch , Mining Division . These investigations are made primarily to provide preliminary information to Department of Interior agencies and others concerned with the planning of the proposed Federal power developments within the Missouri River Basin . The present report has been designed to permit public distribution of the factual data obtained . The field investigations in Meagher County were made during tually all 1948 ; Vir- known metallic mineral occurrences within the county were investigated ; some nonmetallic mineral deposits also were investigated . The investigations cannot be considered complete , however , because some long-inactive mines or prospects may have been missed . Most of the old mine and prospect openings are caved; many are completely inaccessible . Many of the claims located years ago have been abandoned ; others have been relocated under different names and ownerships . Because of such conditions , much of the information regarding their development and operation necessarily has been obtained from Federal and State publications , supplemented by information provided by owners and local residents .

Following a decline in direct and indirect employment in the minerals industry between 2000 and 2003, the situation reversed in 2004 and employment rose by 12 per cent. Furthermore, there are forecasts of continuing employment growth in the minerals industry in the immediate future. For those of us charged with promoting the virtues of a career in the minerals industry this is encouraging news, as it provides us with the evidence to promote the increasing employment opportunities of a healthy and vibrant industry. However, for many others û particularly the employers in this industry û the news is not so rosy. The jobs are there, and in increasing numbers, but the workers arenÆt! Employers right across the industry are finding it increasingly difficult to fill vacancies with suitably qualified and skilled employees and the competition is becoming fiercer. In the minerals and energy sector, questions are being asked and solutions sought on the industryÆs ability to attract and retain a skilled workforce. From many quarters û industry, government and the education sector, calls for urgent action are becoming louder. The reasons for this are well known û the nature of the work, the remote location, perceptions of the industry, an aging workforce, the gender imbalance, the shrinking demographic of school leavers. It is the latter I wish to focus on û the Generation Y demographic û those who have recently left school, those who are in higher education or have recently entered the workforce, or those who are still at secondary school. These young people are the next cohort of potential employees for the industry. But our need for them appears to be greater that their perceived need for us! How do we engage them so they are informed about the industry? How do we inform and advise them so they are prepared to consider further education and training in disciplines and skill areas relating to our industry? How do we guide and motivate them to give it their best shot and work in it û at least for part of their working life? These are fundamental questions that many within the industry have been grappling with for quite some time. Let me share with you some of the strategies that the Minerals Council is implementing to address this issue.

Recently there has been much discussion of the use of pipelines for the long-distance transportation of solids. Many have come to recognize the economies inherent in pipeline transportation. The widespread movement of oil and gas at astonishingly low costs - a gallon of oil moves from Montana to New York for less than that for the delivery of a postcard - has spurred others to sturdy this mode of transportation. Most interested people are aware of the inherent advantages of pipelines - continuity and reliability of operations - low manpower requirements per ton mile - moderate capital costs per ton mile - low maintenance costs per ton mile - low operating costs per ton mile.

The imperative to operate sustainably requires all equipment and processes to operate at their maximum possible efficiency. Achieving this ideal state requires a thorough understanding, not only of the process itself, but also of the tools available to design and assess potential improvements. This paper presents a case where the widely employed Discrete Element Method (DEM) toolset proved insufficient to model problematic material flow during the process of optimising wet screening performance. A Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) model was found to more accurately replicate the flow characteristics of the physical system. Site observations identified biased loading of the screen decks to cause inefficiencies in the wet screening of an iron ore processing circuit. Two numerical modelling approaches were pursued with the aim to select the most suitable one and continue the optimisation process based on that selected model. Selection criteria were established, based on the minimum requirements of being able to replicate the problem, including the main flow dynamics deemed to cause the issue. The DEM model was found to over-simplify the slurry flow dynamics within the scrubber and no laterally biased flow was introduced by the scrubber’s rotation to the otherwise symmetric system. Since DEM was not able to accurately replicate the existing problem, it was deemed an unsuitable method to assess the effect of any changes to the system. The second approach consisted of a SPH model. This model was deemed to map the flow within the scrubber with sufficient accuracy to address the problem, as it produced biased screen loading comparable to that reported from site. Changes to the wet chute, delivering material from the scrubber to the screen, aimed to neutralise the non-centrality introduced via the scrubber, were then successfully designed and assessed using the SPH model.

TRIPOLI is a rather unusual form of silica, which thus far has been found in commercially valuable quantities only in the neighborhood of Seneca, Mo., although there are numerous deposits of somewhat similar materials in several southern states. The latter have not, however, attained any position of real importance, due undoubtedly to definite structural limitations which have rendered them less suitable for the particular uses that have given tripoli its principal outlets. Raymond B. Ladoo, mineral technologist, says&apos;: "Since that time (1880-90) the term tripoli has with increasing definiteness been reserved for the Seneca material, and other siliceous materials of similar origin and physical properties."

"A pilot test campaign was undertaken to evaluate dense medium cyclone separation efficiencies on samples of iron ore fines (-1mm +300µm). Evaluations were done using both gas and water atomised FeSi types across a range of operating conditions in the presence of slimes build-up. A Mineral Liberation Analyser (MLA) was used to measure size, density, shape and liberation data of DMS feed and products. The results of the test work were used to obtain parameters for modelling of the partition size/density response. The findings indicated that accurate density characterisation of the feed ore is essential in understanding product quality and recovery, particularly due to the effect of porosity and micro-inclusions. A significant off-set between cyclone underflow density and separation cut-point (D50) was found indicating that relatively low feed media densities (about 3.4g/cm3) are required to achieve high density cutpoints of over 4.0g/cm3. In agreement with CFD modelling, the separation quality is dominated by viscous effects, hence FeSi type and slimes content will need to be carefully controlled to ensure efficient separation.INTRODUCTION In the South African context, future resources of hematite are expected to be both of lower head grade and will contain a higher content of banded iron formation (BIF) (1). These ores may require finer crushing in order to liberate the high-grade fractions and will thus increase the amount of -1mm material to be processed. In order to efficiently upgrade these materials, it becomes necessary to re-examine both traditional and novel processes to treat material finer than 1mm in size. These include spiral and up-current classifiers, wet high intensity magnetic separation processes, Reflux classification and potentially includes dense medium separation (DMS). This study presents a technical evaluation of fines DMS using a mineralogically-based particle tracking analysis method (PTA) to calculate efficiencies of separation."
