1. The investigation shows that the Pewee, Big Mary, and Windrock are the most important beds in Anderson County. About 73 percent of the known recoverable reserves of coal in the county are in these beds, and from them comes 94 percent of the production. The remaining reserves tabulated in this report are in the Joyner, Jellico, Coal Creek, and Poplar Creek beds, and 6 percent of the county production comes from these beds. No production is being reported at present from the Jellico bed, although it was mined years ago. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, bared on a minimum thickness of 1/4 inches and on 1,800 short tons put acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 170 million torts as of January 1, 1953 Of this total, 155 million tons is in beds 2S inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to permit making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to they total estimated reserves.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will induct the 2013 National Mining Hall of Fame class on Sept. 14, 2013. The ceremony will take place at the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, CO. Representing the domestic and worldwide metal production, education, and health and safety sectors of the industry, this year?s five inductees cover a diverse cross-section of the mining industry. The inductees are: Charles F. Barber, Donald W. Gentry, Patrick H. O?Neill, Milton H. Ward and David A. Zegeer. They will join 218 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 26th Annual Induction Banquet and Ceremony. They were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors, both within their own sectors and across the industry at large. Barber was a top executive at leading U.S. metals producer Asarco from 1956 to 1982. During his tenure, Asarco responded successfully to the demanding requirements of new environmental legislation in the United States and to changing concepts of foreign investment in mining, especially in Latin America. Gentry?s career took him from being a working mining engineer, to renowned mining educator, to president and chief executive officer of a mining company. As an educator, he had a positive impact upon hundreds, if not thousands, of new mining engineers and many others who took his short courses in mine economics. During his years in South America, O?Neill did everything from supervising operations of 15-bucket ladder gold dredges to becoming president of International Mining Corp. As an executive, he emphasized provision of education and training to local people working at mine sites for which he had responsibility. Ward?s experience covered the world and spectrum of metals, minerals and ores, ranging from A to Z (antimony to zinc and Australia to Zambia). He was president, chairman and chief executive officer of Cyprus Amax Minerals from 1992 to 1999, and he was president and chief operating officer of Freeport-McMoRan from 1983 to 1992, during which time he was instrumental in developing Freeport?s world-class Indonesian operations. Zegeer dedicated his mining career to protecting the health and safety of miners as a corporate executive, head of the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and community leader. His tenure at MSHA coincided with a period of remarkable progress in U.S. mining safety .NMHF&M Board of Directors Chairman Paul C. Jones said: ?The five outstanding gentlemen being honored this year as inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame are classic examples of the leadership and work ethic that has made America?s mining industry the world leader in technically sound, environmentally and socially correct, and economical mineral production that sets the standards for mining worldwide. The impact generated by old abandoned mines in Peru have produced mining environmental liabilities, which can generate an impact on the environment. In the search for long-term sustainable solutions, Phytoremediation is presented as an interesting alternative, since it allows the use of Peruvian native plant species for the accumulation of heavy metals. In this paper, we present the results of native high Andean species: Stipa Ichu and Cortaderia Nitida. The final metal concentration in the aerial parts and in the roots of each plant show that Stipa Ichu is more efficient to recover Fe, reaching almost 278 times its initial value. In the same way, this plant is efficient to remove Zn, Cu and Cd, reaching maximum values of 64, 39 and 12 times its initial concentration respectively. Cortaderia Nitida turned out to be more efficient to recover Fe, Zn, Cu and Cr, with highest recovery of 250, 117, 39 and 13 times its initial value respectively. Finally, based on translocation factor, Stipa Ichu has better capacities of hyperaccumulation of Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb and Cr. Cortaderia Nitida only shows hyperaccumulation of Cr.

Sulphur isotope ratios have been determined for 81 sulphides and S and O isotope ratios for 26 barites from the Alston Block in the northern Pennine ore field. In addition, both isotope ratios have been determined for 29 evaporitic anhydrites of various ages from European and Australian localities. The consistency of the sulphate isotope ratios over a wide area of the northern Pennines, and their similarity to values for Lower Carboniferous evaporites, suggests that the sulphate originated from Lower Carboniferous connate waters. It is suggested that these mingled with warm brines rising through granitic plutons beneath Tynehead and Upper Weardale, the aqueous sulphide ion in these brines having a delta34S value of approximately +10 per mille. The delta34S values for the sulphides range from +15.0 to -5.9 per mille and show an outward zoning with higher values in the central fluorite zones and mainly negative values in the outer barite zones. The wide range of delta34S values for the sulphide S is not characteristic of magmatic S and there is no adequate local source in the Carboniferous sediments. It is suggested that formation waters, probably mainly of connate origin, sank down sufficiently deep to become heated above 200°C before rising through Caledonian granite plutons into the Carboniferous sediments, where they spread laterally to mingle with cooler sulphatic connate water. The rising fluids were hypersaline brines carrying F, Ba, Pb, Zn, Cu and S. Temperatures of deposition calculated from galena-sphalerite isotope fractionation are similar to temperatures previously determined from fluid inclusion studies.

Froth stability is widely recognized as a key driver of flotation selectivity. It is well known that froth stability is affected by the type and quantity of surface active reagents present (frothers), and the concentration and hydrophobicity of solid particles present. While some studies have been performed on the effect of frothers on froth stability in three-phase systems and the hydrophobicity of particles present, very little work has been performed on the effect of solids loading on froth stability. This may be due to insufficiently robust measurement techniques. This paper investigates the use of a new machine vision measurement to measure solids loading, and the relationship between this measurement, bubble size, and bubble burst rate on the froth surface. Curtailment of bauxite importation by enemy activities during World War II focused attention on the necessity of developing domestic deposits of aluminous materials. Large quantities of aluminum ores such as kaolin, siliceous bauxites, high-iron bauxites, anorthosite, and diaspore clays are available but not readily amenable to Bayer processing because of excessive impurities. The Bayer process, which is the only commercial method in use in the United States for producing metallurgical-grade alumina, requires a high Al2O3 bauxite relatively low in SiO2 and Fe2O3. The Bureau of Mines was charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of alumina from these low-grade ores. One part of the program was an investigation, in the laboratory and pilot plant, of the recovery of alumina by the lime-soda sinter process. Ores comprising kaolin, diasporic clays, anorthosite, and siliceous bauxites have been investigated and studied in the laboratory and pilot plant, and a series 'of reports covering these investigations has been prepared.

The Antamina project, owned by BHP Billiton Plc, Mitsubishi Corporation, Noranda Inc., and Teck Cominco Ltd. , is a $2.3 billion copper/zinc project, located in the Ancash Department in Perú. The project consists of an open pit mine, a 70,000 ton per day concentrator, a 302 Km. long concentrate pipeline, port facilities, a new access road, power line, and town site. The project is designed to produce up to 1.5 million tonnes per year of copper and zinc concentrates over a 23-year project life, and will be the third largest producer of zinc and the seventh largest producer of copper in the world. This mega project is the largest mining investment in the country and, during its construction stage, was the most important construction project worldwide. On May 28th, 2001, Antamina commenced testing operations and four months later, it reached commercial production. Antamina was officially inaugurated on November 14th, 2001 by Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo. The construction stage of the project generated 8,000 direct jobs, with a peak of 10,000 employees, and 30,000 indirect jobs. The permanent workforce consists of approximately 1650 employees, the vast majority of which are Peruvian Nationals; around 30% of whom came from the department of Ancash where the deposit is located. Approximately 5,800 indirect jobs will be generated from the project. Independent sources state that Antamina will increase the Peruvian mining exports by 30% and Peruvian GDP by 1.4% within its first year of full operation in 2002. Since winning the privatization bid for the project in 1996, the company has implemented a successful approach to community development and environmental protection based on sustainable development principals. Throughout the development of the project, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to ensure full involvement of the local populations in community development activities and the company?s environmental program. Due to its size, difficult logistics, cultural considerations and financial aspects, the project has faced a number of unique challenges in the area of environmental protection and management of community interaction. Antamina has been innovative in its approach to these issues, and as a result, has set new standards in Perú for environmental and community management, and sustainable development.

THE decomposition on cooling of the high-temperature ß bcc phases in copper- or silver-based binary systems usually takes place by a martensitic. massive, bainitic, or pearlitic reaction depending upon the particular conditions of each system. The AgAl system is one of these systems in which a massive or a martensitic transformation can occur upon cooling from the 3 phase field. Recently Hawbolt and Brown1 observed both massive and martensitic transformation products in a 22.7 at. pct A1 alloy. In the present work the massive and the martensitic transformations were investigated in a number of alloys for the composition range between 23.2 and 27.9 at. pct Al. The alloys were prepared using high-purity silver, 99.999 pct, supplied by ASARCO and aluminum, 99.999 pct, supplied by ALCOA. The metals were melted using a graphite or a sintered alumina crucible which was sealed in quartz tubes under an argon atmosphere. The alloys Were remelted to reduce segregation and homogenized in the 13 phase field for 24 hr. The weight of the alloys after homo-genization compared with the initial weight indicating the alloy composition to be within k0.1 pct of the in- tended composition. Chemical analysis of several samples confirmed the estimated alloy composition. All metallographic observations were performed on samples electropolished with ac current using a 10 pct solution of KCN and a stainless-steel electrode. The samples were cut into -1-mm-thick slices, polished, heat-treated in the ß phase field, and quenched in air, ice water, or iced brine. Some heat treatments consisted of a 2-min anneal carried out in air to allow maximum quenching speeds. Other samples were heat-treated in a vacuum of 10"4 torr and quenched using a helium blast in a quenching apparatus described elsewhere.&apos; In both cases, no appreciable losses of silver or aluminum were noted at the sample surface by sectioning and electropolishing. Table I summarizes the microstructure resulting from the various quenching treatments. The composition of the alloys investigated is also indicated on the equilibrium diagram in Fig. 1. "INTRODUCTION An inherent aspect of any tunnelling project is ground risk: how it is identified, quantified and managed throughout the various stages of a project. Early identification of these risks, such as adverse ground conditions or potential obstructions is crucial; however specific identification of all risks will inevitably be limited by the extent of the desk study, ground investigation and accuracy of as-built information available, particularly in a densely populated urban environment such as London with a long and varied history of development. It is therefore crucial to have suitable plans and procedures in place for dealing with potential ground risk scenarios if they occur during construction work to ensure the safety of the workforce and to protect nearby critical assets. A number of experiences of potential ground risk were encountered during the Sprayed Concrete Lining (SCL) works on Crossrail contract C300/410 which was constructed by a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK). The C300/410 works, undertaken in the heart of London, comprised of over 2.5km of SCL tunnels for Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road Stations and the Fisher Street crossover, as well as two 6.2km TBM tunnel drives between Royal Oak and Farringdon. BFK appointed Donaldson Associates as their SCL designers for the works; together they were responsible for excavation stability up to the point of ring closure. Despite the majority of SCL tunnelling works at Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road being through the favourable medium of London clay, there remained areas of local geotechnical challenges. Some of these were expected from the outset, some became apparent as works progressed from records of other nearby excavation works, and some were only encountered during tunnel excavation. Being located in the centre of London meant that there always remained a possibility of meeting some form of obstruction from previous structures. However, identification of all potential issues prior to the commencement of the works was challenging and proved to not be entirely possible. Through a series of case studies, this paper documents incidents where obstructions or adverse ground conditions arose. These scenarios all had the potential to cause safety risks, impact the tunnel design and/or construction methods and ultimately add time and cost to the works. The paper discusses how these challenges were overcome which utilised in part, a progressive risk reduction cycle, feeding back knowledge gained at all stages of construction into the approach for undertaking the works. It also examines what could be done in future to further reduce the ground risk through early identification, communication, education and appropriate contingency measures."

The present study aimed to investigate the bioleaching efficiency of moderate thermophilic microorganism in a growth medium without Fe supplement on three different size fractions of spent catalyst obtained from petroleum refinery. All the experiments were conducted on shake flasks at a temperature of 65 °C and a pulp density of 10% (w/v) on three size fractions viz. 45-106 µm, 106-212 µm and >212 µm and a working volume of 100 ml comprising of 10 ml of microbial inoculums and 90 ml of Modified Kelly medium. The parameters like pH, redox potential, viable planktonic cell count and the amount of acid addition was measured and quantified on regular basis to follow the progress of the bioleaching. The pH varied much in the lag and logarithmic phase of the experiments but stabilized toward the stationary phase. The total acid additions in each batch experiment were determined the amount of Conc. H2SO4 requirement, which ranged between 683-757 kg/ton of spent catalyst. The redox potential values ranged between 625-650 mV, Ag/AgCl, but were very low ranging between 350-450 mV during initial period. The planktonic viable cell count ranged between 108-109 cells/ml active in the bioleaching system, without any toxic influence of the spent catalyst, but initially due to fall in redox potential and new environment for the microbes, their population was low. The leaching yield of Ni was found to be promising with very high leaching yield of 92-96% followed by Al as 61-62%, which means both Ni and Al leaching were favored by the moderate thermophilic bioleaching compared to the mesophilic bioleaching. There was very little difference in the leaching yield, when compared with different size fractions and hence grinding can be avoided prior to leaching. This process seems to be economical as no Fe source is supplemented together with no requirement of grinding and over all a biological process resulting for an eco-friendly process for future optimization of the metal recovery from petroleum refinery spent catalysts. Project scheduling is a deterministic technique utilizing single estimates of activity durations. In reality, activity durations are stochastic and can be better represented by probability distributions. This paper describes the development and utilization of a project scheduling simulation which combines analytical scheduling with stochastic activity durations. The purpose is to provide a method to analyze the sequencing of mining production processes and predict the effect of any planned changes. The simulation is demonstrated through realistic examples, such as longwall face-to-face transfer sequencing and the effect of varying advance rates on longwall development sections. Statistical data, to make more informed production decisions, are generated in the form of project activity/path criticality and project duration distributions.

Resource modelling is the basis for any economic appraisal of a mining project and includes a number of steps from data acquisition and validation to resource reporting and classification. At each step in the modelling process it is necessary to define the specific objectives, the methodology proposed to achieve those objectives and to establish a set of checks and validation tools to assess the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. The data used has to be both reliable and relevant for the purpose of the modelling. QA/QC for database validation requires verification of sample location; including correct collar location, topographic modelling and down-hole surveying. Validation is also performed on assaying information such as checks for sampling bias and accuracy of core splits, proper use of pulp duplicates and standards, handling of calculated values, explicit/implicit absent data and data entry errors. The second step involves identifying the mineralized domains resulting from the mineralization process. This step requires a geometric interpretation of all relevant geological features that have influenced the spatial distribution of the mineralization including dykes, faults and alteration. In addition, a geologic reference system rather than a standard Cartesian system is established to measure distances between samples. Once the mineralized domains are established and the database has been validated, statistical and spatial description of the mineralized samples are examined in order to establish the histogram and the variogram of all variables of interest and their correlation. Results are also used to calibrate the global resource estimate within the mineralized domain and to establish the search strategy for grade interpolation. The mineral envelope is filled with polyhedral cells representing mining blocks. The average grade of these blocks is estimated using kriging techniques in order to eliminate global bias and to minimize the local error in the block grade estimate. Visual checks are made to validate the spatial trends in grade distribution while global bias and smoothing effect are assessed from the declustered sample statistics. When required, smoothing correction may be applied using ?change of support? techniques. Simulations are used to perform sensitivity analysis and the simulation models are used if severe smoothing of spatial variability makes the interpolated model inappropriate for mine planning. The keys to successful resource estimation are an integrated team of geologists, geophysicists, geostatisticians and mine engineers using the best available technology and reviews by independent auditors. The resource team is also responsible for performing a QA/QC program in order to measure the effectiveness of the methods in meeting the specific objectives at each step of the modelling process.

During the past five years, mining operations have had access to press technology for piping and joint fittings that can save owners a significant amount of time when installing or replacing pipes by eliminating the need for welding or threading. Viega, with North American headquarters in Wichita, KA, entered the mining sector in 2009, adding to its already expanding industrial sector. Since then, the company?s global engineering department has paid considerable attention to its industrial division, bringing its expertise in plumbing solutions for residential and commercial buildings to the mining and mineral extraction industry. ?We have a lot of applications in the mining industry.?We have a lot of applications in the mining industry throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico and continue to expand in the mining industry,? Tom Shields, Viega?s director for industrial accounts explained. ?Since we made the decision to increase our presence in the industrial markets, we have been aggressive and more than 240 applications have been approved by our engineering department in Germany.? Getting approval from Viega?s engineering department is no small feat. During a tour of the manufacturing facilities in Ennest and Großheringen, Germany, Mining Engineering, as well as a select few other publications and clients, were shown Viega?s manufacturing process. At the Ennest facility, hundreds of millions of fittings are produced, and each one is inspected mechanically and with a laser at the end of the production line. With four production facilities in Germany and one in the United States, Viega is able to ship to anywhere in the world. The company distributes everything from fittings to stainless steel pipe.

This report summarizes the results of laboratory investigations conducted by the Federal Bureau of Mines to obtain hydrometallurgical information on the dissolution of mercury sulfides from ores, flotation concentrates, and pure mercuric sulfides. Statistical methods were used to design the experiments and evaluate the resulting data. Studies demonstrated that cinnabar is readily soluble in sodium sulfide, partly soluble in potassium sulfide, and essentially insoluble in ammonium sulfide. Additions of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide to sodium sulfide solutions increased mercury extraction slightly; when either was added to potassium sulfide or ammonium sulfide solutions, mercury extraction was equal to that of sodium sulfide. Tests at the Albany Metallurgy Research Center showed that sodium sulfide would completely dissolve chemically pure mercuric sulfide, more than 95 percent of the cinnabar in 5-percent mercury flotation concentrates, and 60 to 90 percent of the cinnabar in low-grade ores. The double-leach tests showed that potassium sulfide would dissolve over 90 percent of the arsenic in mercury-arsenic products and 1 to 10 percent of the mercury; then sodium sulfide-hydroxide solutions would dissolve 80 to 90 percent of the remaining mercury and 5 to 10 percent of the arsenic.

"Discrete event simulation (DES) is a suitable framework to evaluate and optimize the dynamics of sulphide smelters. In particular, iron-nickel-copper-cobalt sulphides undergo continual oxidation within a roasting or smelting operation, followed by batch oxidation within the converting operation, thus producing iron-free Bessemer matte (or blister copper, in the case of copper smelters); this semi-finished product undergoes further processing to produce nickel, copper and cobalt products, and to recover precious metals. The juncture between continuous smelting and batch converting is often an appropriate focus for the earliest phases of DES development, since it is typically a major bottleneck within nickel and copper smelters; later phases may include increasing levels of detail for auxiliary unit operations, as well as plant logistics. Moreover, DES can support matte-slag chemistry, including Gibbs free energy balances to determine the iron speciation within the slag. DES is therefore capable of linking the fundamentals of oxidation reactions to the intricacies of plant dynamics.INTRODUCTION Discrete event simulation (DES) is gaining acceptance within the extractive metallurgy community, as a technique that quantifies the system-wide performance of metallurgical plants under conditions of uncertainty (Wheeler & McGinty, 2015). In particular, over 90% of smelters that process nickel-copper-cobalt sulphides and copper sulphides exhibit similar semi-continuous dynamics (Crundwell et al., 2011b; Schlesinger et al., 2011b), in which the converting aisle produces batches of material that are sent for further processing (Figure 1). Thus the tools and practices that are developed for a specific sulphide smelter are often relevant to numerous other smelters.The juncture between continuous smelting and batch converting has long been a focus for discrete event simulation (Welgama et al., 1996). Nonetheless, the broad acceptance of DES in nonferrous smelters has been hindered by interdisciplinary barriers that divide industrial and metallurgical engineers (Navarra et al., 2016; Noorossana et al., 2012); this divide has been less severe in steel plants (Hollocks, 2006). In recent years, DES has been used in copper smelters to analyze crane-and-ladle motions (Coursol et al., 2009a), reverts production and consumption (Noorossana et al., 2012), and innovative control systems (Herrera et al., 2016); additionally, DES models have accounted for shutdowns and random breakdowns to provide realistic assessments of copper smelter capacities, thus guiding equipment upgrades (Campbell et al., 2013; Coursol et al., 2009a). All of these studies feature a Peirce-Smith converting aisle similar to Figure 1 that, under normal operations, constrain the smelter throughput, and are thus a bottleneck (Campbell et al., 2013; Navarra et al., 2016)."

Sperrylite (PtAs₂) comprises about 21% of the platinum group minerals (PGMs) in the Platreef ore and regularly reports to the tailings due to its poor floatability. Hence, improving its recovery will be of great economic value to the South African PGM industry. The reasons for its poor floatability are not yet clear. This paper seeks to understand the interactions occurring between PtAs₂ and common thiol collectors, viz. potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX), sodium normal dibutyl dithiophosphate (SNBDTP) and sodium normal mono butyl dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC). By understanding its interactions with these collectors, it is hypothesised that it will be possible to suggest ligands that may help improve the floatability of sperrylite. Mineral-collector interactions were studied by determining the molar energy of interaction using isothermal titration calorimetry and electrochemical techniques. The hydrophobicity of the mineral before and after adsorption of the collectors was determined by heat of immersion and its flotation response determined by microflotation tests. Microflotation tests using synthetic sperrylite at pH 9 showed low collectorless recovery of 34.8% and after adding the equivalent of one pseudo-monolayer of the PNBX collector, the recovery of 32.5% was obtained. Moreover, the addition of up to three pseudo-monolayers coverage of PNBX did not result in any increase in flotation recovery. A small recovery improvement was noted when synthetic plant water with the ionic strength of 0.0484 mol/L was used, but this did not hold for all collectors, with SNBDTP exhibiting higher recoveries in distilled water. The synthesis process of BaTiO3 from TiO2 and BaCO3 in the molten NaOH-KOH at 350oC was studied by the A.C impedance technique. The A.C. impedance of molten NaOH-KOH (xNaOH = 0.36) and the variation of the conductivity of the salt with time during the synthesized process were measured. The synthesized reaction of the BaTiO3 and the decomposition reaction of BaCO3 are fast and were finished in 10min. The interaction between TiO2, BaO and BaTiO3 and the molten salt was confirmed by the variation of the conductivity.

At a meeting of the Anthracite Investigations Advisory Committee in July 1944 at Washington, D. C., the initial work and objectives of the Anthracite Mechanical Mining Section of the Federal Bureau of Mines were discussed. It was learned that interest existed in an improved performance of mining thin, steeply pitching beds above the gangway by mechanical methods. One company offered the use of one of its mines for experimental work, and this offer was accepted. Following acceptance, an effort was made by Bureau engineers to devise a mechanical method with a performance better than that of a new hand method proposed by company engineers for an actual mining condition. The method proposed by the Bureau was to drive 30-degree slant chutes across a 10-foot bed pitching 85 degrees. These chutes were to be advanced by using a lightweight, compressed air-powered, shearing machine of German origin that had been tried in a flat Pennsylvania anthracite bed in 1934, and which did not then prove successful because of blasting difficulties. An attempt was made to obtain one of these machines from England, where it was known machines of this type had been used. Shortly thereafter John W. Buch was sent to Europe as a member of the Solid Fuels Mission to the European Theater of Operations organized by the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Through his efforts the Bureau of Mines obtained two such machines, known as the Eickhoff model DEK, one from England and one from Germany. This report covers the preliminary testing of these machines in order to obtain mechanical operating data for use in determining the power requirements for cutting anthracite with machines of this design.

Treatability studies were performed to determine the effectiveness of two commercially available treatment methods (solvent extraction and thermal desorption) for the removal of PCBs and PAHs from contaminated dredged riverbed sediments. The solvent extraction method evaluated was the B.E.S.T. process which extracts the contaminants with triethylamine. The thermal desorption method utilized was the ATP process which desorbs the contaminants at elevated temperature in an anaerobic atmosphere. A description of both methods and. an evaluation of the treatability study results is provided. Each treatment method was used to treat two separate samples (high and low concentration) from the site. Overall, both methods proved to be very effective with solvent extraction achieving 98% removal of both PCBs and PAHs and thermal desorption achieving better than 99% removal of both the PCBs and PAHs from the high concentration sample. Both solvent extraction and thermal desorption achieved greater than 99% removals of PCBs and PAHs from the low concentration sample. Vendor cost estimates for full scale treatment were roughly equivalent. The primary differences between the two methods lies in the realm of permitting, operational requirements, and emission concerns.

ABOUT three years ago a distinctive new type of crushing and grinding equipment, known as the Hadsel mill, was announced. A description appeared in the November, 1932, issue of this magazine. Any machine that would take run-of-mine ore and reduce it, in one operation, and at a reasonable cost, to a size suitable for metallurgical treatment was bound to attract much interest, as the original Hadsel mill did. The first commercial sizes were built with the drum supported by an overhung shaft and partly immersed in a tank. The drum carried inside and outside buckets to lift the ore, which was dropped as the drum revolved onto stationary breaker plates projecting into the drum from the opposite tank wall. The coarser material settled back into the inside buckets. Intermediate sizes were carried into the tank, and this material was scooped out by the outside buckets and deposited hack in the drum for further grinding. The fines were carried out of the mill with the wash water over an adjustable weir at one side of the tank.
