The Sherwood Mine is being monitored to determine the nature and extent of changes in the mine and its environs which result from the closing and the cessation of pumping. Of particular interest was the possibility of piping-induced subsidence occurring as the mine flooded. Previous experience in the district indicated that this possibility was very real. A monitoring system, including acoustic sensors, extensometers, surface subsidence monuments, and ground water observation wells was installed in July 1978, just prior to the mine closing. Late in 1979, three piping-induced subsidence events occurred. The monitored data, and related laboratory studies are being applied to a quantitative description of piping-induced subsidence.

Chapter 1 showed that flash smelting is a key step in extracting copper from sulfide ores. It also showed that there , are two versions of flash smelting: (a) Outokumpu flash smelting, which uses oxygen-enriched air blast and injects dry feed downwards into a hot furnace (b) lncoflash? smelting, which uses industrial oxygen blast and injects dry feed horizontally into a hot furnace. Atlantic Cement Company's new multimillion dollar, 10,000,000 barrel per year cement plant went into full operation in February, 1962, bringing into reality a new concept in the distribution of Portland cement. The Cerro and Newmont Mining Corporations, well established in the mineral extraction and dressing industry, backed the venture. To take advantage of the, economics inherent in single production units of large capacity, it was necessary to first find a market' capable of absorbing such large quantities. Cement can be economically shipped by rail and truck about 200 miles. Beyond' that radius from the producing facility the freight costs become prohibitive. No single marker area within that radius exists which could absorb such a large volume of cement. However, water transportation provides a relatively inexpensive method of transporting bulk products many times over such a distance. Thus, it was decided to locate the producing facility near a deep water port which had ready access both to the Atlantic Ocean and, just as important, a good source of raw material. An extensive feasibility study was made and the site at Ravena, New York on the Hudson River near Albany was chosen. Here, vast quantities of limestone in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains are found within a short distance of-the deep-water Hudson River.

This article describes two new concepts regarding the CFA (Auger Cast) piles. The first one, MALI Effect, is an approach to control the casting phase, while the second one, NETA Shear, is a technique which converts the drilling rig into a geo-mechanical tool. We look upon the system of the auger and the ground as a piston inside a cylinder. When concrete (grout) is pumped into that system, an up lift force is generated (We call that force MALI Effect). That up lift force reduces the needed tension in the pull up cable. By analyzing the tension force in the cable we detect the up lift force of the concrete. That pushup force is the product of the real concrete pressure at the bottom of the auger by the area of that bottom. As the area is known, the real pressure is accurately calculated. A control loop which is based on MALI Effect is very sensitive, precise, objective, reliable and easy to be used. All the process is based on pure real physical measurements. The system has no assumptions, no comparisons, no parameters, no zeroing and no adjustments. When we penetrate into the ground like a theoretical screw, for about a meter in depth, and then brake the main cable while rotating the auger, a set of forces generates. As the auger tends to keep penetration, but the cable holds it - a tension force develops (We call that force NETA Shear). Analysis of that tension force shows that it relates to the ultimate shearing capacity of the ground.

Stockyard operations are governed by the interaction between the different disciplines required to successfully schedule and control the supply chain of raw material through the stockyard in combination with the effectivity of the operation of the stockyard equipment. The system demonstrates a proven technology for implementing a centralised operation of full unmanned stockyard equipment, using a high precision absolute positioning system based on a Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers in combination with 3D rangefinders. The system implementation maps the surface profile of the stockyard inventory and allows in combination with proprietary algorithms for full operation of the stockyard machines without on-board operators. The operational impact of delayering the process by moving to a centralised operation is examined, together with the combined effect on the overall safety in the stockyard as a result of a change in reliance on operator skill dependencies. Average performance gains range from 10–20 per cent. The performance of the automation system is related to a consistency and reliability of uniform operation, which has an impact on the life expectancy and the effectiveness of the equipment. The effects of having instantaneous and correct information about the stockyard inventory volume measurement are investigated in relation towards spot price trading in current fast reacting markets.CITATION:Stefansen, R, 2017. The rediscovery and recognition of the magnetite potential of the iron mineralisation at the Hawsons Project area 60 km south of Broken Hill has the potential for the development of a new series of magnetite iron-ore operations across the Braemar Iron Formation in New South Wales and South Australia. Despite the low-grade of 16 per cent magnetite, the Hawsons project feasibility studies are indicating a positive business case for a large-scale 20 Mt/a of magnetite project for the following reasons:• The mineralisation is on a huge scale, with a major potential for increases beyond the already very large established resource of 1.4 Bt.• The mineralisation is particularly soft for crushing and grinding, with a Bond work index of 6.3 and an overall comminution power requirement of 6.7 kWh/t of ore. This equates to 39 kWh/t of concentrate which is significantly less than for similar projects.• The mineralisation fractures easily, preferentially along grain boundaries.• Location is close to mining infrastructure and a skilled workforce at Broken Hill, 60 km to the northeast.• It is close to road and rail infrastructure for access to the resource.• A high-grade, clean magnetic concentrate can be produced, with the only contaminant being silica.The deposit is a sedimentary siltstone which is considerably different to other known magnetite deposits. This caused significant differences in Davis Tube Recovery (DTR) results between laboratories so that the softness of the ore has required a close focus on, and changes to the laboratory procedures. A DTR procedure has been developed to provide consistent results across the deposit.Crushing and grinding test work has established a clear advantage in the use of the high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) crushing and grinding circuit for this particular ore. The power required for comminution using the HPGR crushing circuit is about half the power required for the Autogenous milling circuit.Therefore, despite the low magnetite grades, the Braemar Iron Formation in New South Wales and South Australia has the potential be a new magnetite iron ore province.

To deal with an unexpected event such as fire, prevention and preparedness are important elements in an underground mine's strategic plan. The purpose is to prevent afire before it initiates and to be prepared to deal with it when it does occur. This paper highlights a technology that may be used by the mining workforce to minimize such occurrences. It discusses thermal imaging cameras and their many applications to detect equipment failures or hot spots before they develop into afire. It also evaluates the feasibility of using thermal imaging cameras for emergency responders to assist them during exploration, rescue and fire fighting efforts. These thermal imaging systems allow rescue personnel to see in darkness and through dense smoke, thus making it easier to locate heated areas and missing or trapped personnel.

The 50 pct Fe-50 pct Co alloy undergoes a transformation from disorder to an ordered structure of the CsCl type reportedly in the vicinity of 732OC. During this process, the coercive force goes through a maximum, apparently as a result of strains associated with the coherent nucleation and growth reaction. This magnetic alloy also shows a marked increase in the ratio of residual to saturation induction, which is associated with annealing to a high degree of order with the continuous application of a magnetic field. The increase in ratio can be explained on the basis of a decrease in 90' domain boundaries and, perhaps, by an increase in anisotropy resulting from lattice distortion. THE 50 pct Fe-50 pct Co alloy undergoes a disorder-order transformation which has been reported to occur in the vicinity of 732°C1,2 The ordered structure is the CsCl type.' This magnetic alloy also shows a marked increase in the ratio of residual to saturation induction as a result of heat treatment in a magnetic field, sometimes called a response to magnetic anneal.'-' The purpose of this investigation was to study the course of the ordering reaction, the nature of the response to .heat treatment in a magnetic field, and the relation, if any, between ordering and the response. Procedure The method of approach in this investigation was to produce an initial structure as completely disordered as possible and then gradually to order the alloy by isothermal anneals at various temperatures under different conditions of the applied magnetic field. Magnetic, magnetostriction, and X-ray analyses were of primary importance in determining the property and structural changes resulting from the isothermal anneals. Rings of the 50 pct Fe-50 pct Co alloy were prepared from the elemental powders by a powder metallurgy technique, further details of which may be found in ref. 7. The initial structure was produced by annealing the specimens for ½ hr at 1000°C, cooling to and holding for ½ hr at 900°C (in the a range above the ordering temperature), and water quenching. Isothermal anneals were performed at 600°, 675°, 720°, and 740°C. For example, rings were heated to 600°C, held for a predetermined period of time, and cooled by natural cooling at a rate slightly slower than an air cool (average of 20" to 25°C per min). The tests (magnetic, etc.) were made after each heat treatment. All high temperature treatments were performed in a purified hydrogen atmosphere. The treatments at the various temperatures were carried out under one or more conditions of an applied field including 1—no field, 2—field of 20 oersteds applied on cooling only, and 3—field of 20 oersteds applied continuously during heating, holding, and cooling. Magnetic measurements were made using the standard Rowland ring technique8 with a maximum field strength of 100 oersteds. The magnetization curve, induction at 100 oersteds (B.), residual induction (Bt), and coercive force (Hc) were determined. All magnetic analysis data were based on an average of the results from three rings. A strain gage technique9 as used for the measurement of magnetostriction. The X-ray determination of the relative amount of ordered phase present was made on the ring specimen used for magnetic measurement. This was done by the back-reflection method using a rotating specimen (because of the large grain size) with unfiltered CoKa radiation and a 7 hr exposure time. Intensity measurements of the ordered line (300) were made by comparing visually the films so obtained with standard films prepared by exposing for different lengths of time a specimen given a long time anneal (high degree of order). Results In all instances the saturation induction (induction at 100 oersteds) was found to increase slightly with annealing time. This effect was small and appears to be the increase in saturation induction to be expected on ordering.10-13 The residual induction behavior was markedly influenced by the field condition during annealing, Figs. 1, 2. For the condition of no applied field, the ratio of residual to saturation induction remained essentially constant for short annealing times but showed a significant increase at longer times. With increasing annealing temperature, less time was required to produce this increase in the ratio. In the case of the 600°C anneals, the increase did not occur until approximately 20 hr, Fig. I, while on annealing at 740°C the increase was immediate, Fig. 2. Slight decreases in the ratio may be observed at 100 hr for specimens treated at 720°C and at 1 hr for those treated at 740°C. Specimens annealed in a field of 20 oersteds showed a residual to saturation induction ratio consistently higher than that for the specimens annealed without the field. The first anneal with the field (¼ hr) caused an abrupt increase in the ratio at all temperatures; thereafter, the increase in the ratio was generally similar for specimens annealed

Cooperative efforts by the Bureau of Mines and Agapito & Associates, Inc., Grand Junction, CO, achieved the research objective of showing that data from measurements of the rate and change in rate of mine roof movement can be effective in detecting roof instability. Several instruments and techniques have been used to monitor roof movement and to detect imminent roof caves during pillar robbing. Early detection of unstable conditions can provide time either to withdraw personnel and equipment or to allocate supplemental support to prevent injury or down-time. Critical convergence rates were determined both manually and electronically. The detection of critical rate of movement has been shown to be an effective tool in ground control efforts.

Loudoun Water’s Quarry A (Milestone Reservoir) project involves conversion of a rock quarry to a billion-gallon raw water reservoir. The project includes a new 40 MGD pump station, deep intake shaft, and three drill and blast intake tunnels for accessing the reservoir. Due to concerns regarding constructability and construction risks, the project design was paused while a Construction Manager At-Risk (CMAR) contractor was procured. The CMAR contractor was engaged collaboratively with the design team to provide risk and constructability input for refining the design. Aspects of the original design, design modifications, and benefits of the CMAR collaboration will be presented.

Chromate conversion coating is a process for making a complex layer at the surface of zinc galvanized steel which makes the metal more resistant to corrosion, especially at marine atmosphere, and increases the adhesiveness of color. In this work the influences of various compositions on commercial zinc galvanized steel sheet to the color of chromate conversion coating has been investigated at normal temperature and the factors that affect the control and optimization of the process have been determined. A bath composition of 20 g/liter Cr203 and 10 g/liter NaOH and a dipping time of 50 seconds at room temperature (25-30°C) make a desirable color of chromate coating. A slow agitation at a constant pH of I (with additions of NaOH or H2SO4) assures a constant bath condition and develops the color. This kind of coating has more corrosion resistance and this bath condition and composition are also more economical.

One of the primary objectives when optimising a mining complex is to maximise its value for the primary stakeholders. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to holistically optimise all aspects of the mining complex, including decisions of when to extract materials from the available sources, how to blend or stockpile these materials and how to best use the available processing streams to satisfy customer demand. Existing methods for global, or holistic, optimisation ignore the compounded effects that risk has on the performance of a mining complex. Over the past decade, several stochastic optimisation approaches have been proposed to integrate various forms of uncertainty into the open pit mine design and production scheduling. These methods, however, are limited in their ability to simultaneously optimise the production schedules for the portfolio of mines, material destination policies, the use of the available processing streams and the various products that are produced at each location of the mining complex.This paper aims to discuss a new method for the global optimisation of open pit mining complexes with geological uncertainty. The proposed generalised methodology is capable of modelling and holistically optimising mining complexes, including aspects related to production scheduling, blending, stockpiling and non-linear interactions that often occur in practice, but are over-simplified in existing models. Two case studies are discussed to highlight the need for these complex, stochastic optimisers. First, a case study for a nickel laterite blending operation highlights the need to integrate geological uncertainty into the optimisation in order to ensure product quality constraints are respected. Second, a case study for a copper-gold mining complex highlights the added value when simultaneously optimising the production schedule and the stockpiling and treatment of extracted materials.CITATION:Goodfellow, R and Dimitrakopoulos, R, 2014. The fibrogenic effects of silica in experimental animals and humans has been extensively studied (I 7, 20). However, the pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms underlying lung injury and fibrosis resulting from silica exposure remain to be elucidated. It is well-documented that silica can stimulate monocyte-macrophage lineage cells to produce cytokines and growth factors, including interleukin-I (IL- I) (20), tumor necrosis factor-ex (TNF-cx) (I 7), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1) (4), and transforming growth factor-P (TGF-P) (24). Consequently, it has been suggested that the fibrogenic effect of silica may be mediated by cytokines in the fater stages of silicosis. During the early phase of interaction between silica and the pulmonary alveolar macrophage, several direct and indirect lines of evidence suggest that reactive oxygen intermediates (ROI) may play a pivotal role in silica- induced tissue damage (2I, 22). One of the most important components of and contributors to ROI is nitric oxide (NO) produced from L-arginine and molecular oxygen under the catalytic influence of NO synthase (NOS) (I 9). At present, at least three NOS genes have been cloned: a constitutive neuron NOS, a constitutive endothelial cell NOS and an inducible NOS (iNOS) (16). A number of factors have been shown to differentially induce iNOS gene expression in different cell lines including bacterial cell products and foreign antigens. During inflammation, NO is a double-edged sword in terms of the host immune defense mechanisms and the physiologic response to an inflammatory insult. The macrophage is one of the major cellular sources of NO. During the early phase of acute inflammation, NO produced from the macrophage appears to facilitate the clearance of pathogens and promotes a local relaxation effect on the microcirculation of vascular smooth muscle. When the production of NO is left unattenuated, especially under oxidative stress, direct cytotoxic effects of NO can emerge through the formation of peroxynitrite as a result of a reaction between NO and superoxide (2).

"The few previous observations of the effect of turbulence on limits of inflammability have been made on a small scale in turbulence produced either by a fan or by movement of the mixture.By a suitable amount of turbulence from a fan the lower limit of methane was 5 per cent as compared with 5 per cent observed for quiescent mixtures in the same vessel.3 With a streaming movement of the gas mixture within the range of speed from 35 to 65 centimeters per second (69 to 128 feet a minute) the lower limit was approximately 5 percent,4 For a quiescent mixture of ethane the lower limit was 3.10 per cent ethane, but with fan running at a moderate speed a 3 per cent mixture exploded.5The object of the tests herein reported was (1) to determine the lower limit of natural gas in a mixture of natural gas and air Which would be ignited and propagate violently when the turbulence was produced by explosives fired from a cannon into the mixture; (2) to observe the behavior when the mixture contained less than this low limit; and (3) to determine how turbulence produced by a fan affects thin limit.Four series of tests were run, three of which were to determine the effect of different sources of ignition: Tests with (1) an electric igniter; (2) 3F black blasting powder stemmed with 2 pounds of dry fire clay stemming used to ignite the mixture, and (3) 40 per cent straight nitroglycerin dynamite unstemmed. The fourth was made to study the effect of turbulence produced by a two-speed electric fan, using an electric igniter as the source of ignition.In both series of tests with explosives, charges of 50 and 200 were used to determine the effect of increased quantity of explosives on the lower limit of natural gas."

"The commercial potential of a silica-kaolin deposit that occurs on the banks of and close to the Missinaibi River in the District of Cochrane, Ontario, is under evaluation by Algocen Mines Limited. The geological features of the deposit, as well as its probable origin, are described. Mineralogical analysis of the deposit samples indicates that the principal minerals are quartz and kaolinite clay; it is estimated that about 20 per cent of the deposit is kaolin clay. The impurity minerals present are: a slightly magnetic Fe-Ti oxide mineral, goethite, muscovite mica, tour-maline, staurolite, anatase and zircon. Laboratory research studies are in progress to develop and evaluate suit-able methods for the separation of silica sand from kaolin. Results to date indicate that good-quality silica sand with an Fe,03 content in the range of 0.012 to 0.025 per cent can be produced. It appears that the clay portion can also be beneficiated to yield products meeting commercial requirements. It has been possible to beneficiate a portion of theetlay to obtain the particle size distribution now specified by industry. However, research is continuing to develop suitable separation and beneficiation methods which can produce kaolin clay meeting all the commercial requirements."

Handling of municipal solid waste (MSW) and control of its potential resources is becoming increasingly important in modern society. The OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) average on municipal waste produced in 2003 was that of around 570 kg per inhabitant. In European Union countries around half amount is of MSW landfilled. In Finland still 88% of MSW was landfilled in 2004. Since incineration reduces MSW volume significantly while producing heat energy, it has become one of the most common waste handling techniques. The shortcoming of incineration is however, that incinerated MSW is often not pre-sorted and it produces slags and ashes as side streams from which recovery of metals is difficult. This paper looks into possibilities of scrap metal recovery for recycling from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash. In order to do that, a flow sheet of physical separation methods was developed and tested with Finnish rotary furnace MSWI bottom ash. In addition, an empirical model for estimation of the recoveries of scrap metals with physical separation methods for treatment of MSWI bottom ash was developed. According to the results of this study, for 1 Mt of incinerated MSW with 30% mass reduction, a minimum resource potential of 100 kt for magnetic metal scrap of roughly 24 % grade and about 19 kt of non-magnetic metal scrap of roughly 65 % grade. In other words, 57 kg magnetic scrap and 12 kg non-magnetic scrap per inhabitant at the mentioned grades, respectively. Although wide variations of parameters affect the MSWI bottom ash quality, it can be said that a considerable amount of metals is drained into MSWI bottom ash. Results of this study show that from MSWI bottom ash significant material streams metal scrap can be reintroduced into the resource cycle which would otherwise be lost.

This research was undertaken to establish the lncendivity of aluminum alloys against rusty steel under frictional impact conditions at typical coal mine fan speeds, to determine any differences in incendivity among various aluminum alloys, and to Investigate less incendive materials as substitutes for aluminum alloys. With a specially designed apparatus, three aluminum casting alloys and three constructional steels were tested for incendivity in frictional impact against rusted steel in flammable methane-air mixtures. Although varying in degree, all aluminum alloys investigated exhibited a high ignition probability under the test conditions; none of the steel specimens tested caused any ignitions under the same conditions.

THE pressures of Mn(g) in equilibrium with Mn7C3 and graphite have been measured by McCabe and Hudson' and Butler, McCabe, and paxton2 by means of graphite, zirconia, and Ta-Mo Knudsen cells. The details of corrections in their measurements were somewhat different from those of the authors;3'4 hence, further independent results at higher temperatures seemed to be warranted. The stoichiom-etry of Mn7C3 in equilibrium with graphite and its stability up to the vicinity of 1373 °K have been satisfactorily established by Kuo and persson5 (See also Hansen and Anderko).' The method of investigation has been described elsewhere in detail.3'4 The carbide was prepared in the manner described by McCabe and Hudson. In order to avoid possible reactions with refractory oxides, only graphite cells were used for the effusion experiments. The authors' results are the runs M-1, M-2 and M-3 listed in Table I, together with those of McCabe and co-workers. The heat capacity, c;, of Mn7C3 is not known; therefore McCable et al. plotted their data as log P vs 1/T and the results were only expressed first' as, and later2 as logP=- -14220+6.06 without further thermodynamic calculations. However, it is possible to estimate closely the necessary heat capacity as follows: When H; - &98 of CrC, or MnO, is plotted vs x, corresponding to various compounds, with temperature as the parameter, it is seen that the relationship is represented by a line of very small curvature. This relationship is also followed by other compounds which do not exhibit solid state phase transformations. In view of the fact that chromium and manganese have the atomic numbers of 24 and 25 respectively, it is reasonable to assume that H; - H;ae vs x for MnC, follows the same type of lines as those for CrC, for which adequate data are available.7 Similar correlations appear to be valid for oxides of two neighboring metals for which reliable data are available. The procedure is thus to move the lines for CrC, vertically (parallel to the axis of HT - H298) until they coincide with the points for MnC1/3, the only carbide of manganese whose H; - HO298 has been

Over 8,000,000 people in the United States depend on natural gas for their cooking, heating and lighting service. This service has been made possible only by the investment of large amounts of capital in transportation lines connecting the gas wells to the various communities, thus combining a hazardous mining operation with a public utility service. The effect that making these lines " common carriers" will have on the present and future service to these 8,000,000 or more people is of far reaching ethical and economic importance, and deserves careful consideration. As an introduction, it must be conceded that: 1. Natural gas, although a mineral and obtained by a mining operation—with more uncontrollable and uncertain features to cope with than exist in the mining of coal or other minerals—when served to the public becomes a public utility service. 2. The governmental power to regulate all public utilities in the interests of the public cannot be successfully disputed. 3. Mere suggestion of inconvenience to the utility is wholly irrelevant, as it cannot be considered or allowed to influence in making a defense against governmental regulation. Unfortunately it is not generally appreciated that:.. I . 1. Legislative enactments are not necessarily laws, and cannot abrogate economic laws or alter engineering facts. 2. There is a clear distinction between "common carrier7' and "public utility," although the terms are frequently confused. "A common carrier is one who undertakes for hire to transport persons or goods, or both, from place to place for all persons indifferently, the term implying indifference as to whom shall be served, and an equal readiness to serve all who apply, in the order of their application." On the other hand, property becomes a "public utility" only "when for a particular purpose the public have a right to resort to the premises and make use of them." It is, therefore, important to note that not all public utilities can be regarded as common carriers. The U. S. Supreme Court has already
