"As part of the Southeast Louisiana (SELA) drainage program, designed to reduce flood damages in the City of New Orleans and surrounding parishes, the SELA-22 project entailed the construction of a concrete covered canal along Jefferson Ave. and Prytania Street. The scope of the required soil improvement was to replace the soil between two parallel lines of sheet piles with a soil-cement mass to eliminate under-seepage, thus creating a so called bottom plug, and provide structural support for the concrete box culvert. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New Orleans District, selected the jet grouting technology for the construction of the bottom plug to a maximum depth of approximately 40 ft, and for a total length of approximately one mile. The specialty geotechnical contractor proposed to accomplish the task utilizing their proprietary and innovative elliptical bi-fluid jet grout technology which, by limiting the overlap between adjacent columns, allowed a reduction of the overall number of installations. Approximately 2,400 elliptical jet grout columns were installed in a very challenging environment, especially under a logistical point of view. This paper will summarize the main features of the project, focusing on the innovative technological solution adopted to maximize productivity and on the several challenges faced in such limited and complicated logistical conditions.INTRODUCTIONThe Southeast Louisiana (SELA) drainage program has been designed with the purpose of reducing flood damages in the City of New Orleans and surrounding parishes. An Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between glass sphere and silica plate in CnTAC1 (n=12, 14, 16, 18) solutions. The results showed the presence of long-range attractive forces that can be fitted to single exponential functions. With a given surfactant, the attractive force increased with increasing concentration, and reached a maximum at the point of charge neutralization (p.c.n.). The decrease in the attractive force above the p.c.n. is probably due to the inverse orientation of the surfactant molecules. A plot of the log (p.c.n.) vs. the number of carbons in the hydrocarbon chains of the Cn TACI homologues showed a linear relationship with a slope of -0.37, indicating that the surfactant adsorption entails a decrease in free energy by -0.85 kT per mole of CH2 (or CH3) group. These results suggest that the adsorption of long-chain surfactants is controlled by hydrocarbon chain association during the process of forming surface hemi-micelles (or domains). Possible origins of the long-range attractions are discussed on the basis of the results presented in this communication.

The Coal Creek Preparation Plant is the coal cleaning facility of Mid-Continent Coal and Coke Company. Located three miles west of Redstone, Colorado, and at an elevation of 8,040 feet the preparation plant cleans coal produced at the company's Dutch Creek Mine and L. S. Wood Mine. (See Fig.1.) Current production is at the rate of 2500 tons per day clean coal. Plant capacity is rated 350 TPH raw coal. Reject rates vary with mining conditions from 8% to 25%. Factors which influenced the design of the coal cleaning facility were the characteristics of the coal, the location in a tourist oriented resort area, and the extreme winters of the area. Lack of areas suitable for settling ponds and the necessity of keeping effluent waters out of the fishing streams dictated a closed circuit plant. Severe winter conditions, which last six to seven months out of the year and temperatures which have dropped to 40° F. below zero on occasions demanded that the plant be totally insulated and enclosed indoors.

Increased coal production, wider use of indiscriminate mining techniques, improved cleaning methods, and greater emphasis on clean fuels is increasing the rate at which wastes accumulate Over the next several years, Colorado Plateau underground coal production is predicted to increase. Currently, mine refuse is deposited in canyons or lowland areas near mines. This study presents information on the nature of coal refuse and disposal practices on the Colorado Plateau. Samples were collected and analyzed to provide information to help formulate alternative methods for reclaiming refuse piles. The analyses were based on determining the capability of unmodified refuse to provide a suitable medium for plant growth. Local topsoils which would be used in reclamation were used as standards. Potential environmental hazards were assessed also. A general cost analysis was done for both surface and underground disposal and the advantages and disadvantages of each were assessed. Several problems were identified which, if solved, would increase the effectiveness of state regulatory programs.

"IntroductionOver the past twenty-five years of improvements to scooptrams In the Ontario Division of Inco Ltd., records indicate that on average, an 8 yard capacity machine at 80% availability will load, haul and dump about 100TPH from an average stoping area. This, essentially, means that Inco mines are limited to 2000 TPD as an approximate maximum production cap per minute. Some of the improvements made to scooptrams over this period have been:• dry disc and oil immersed brakes on larger loaders;• to replace air over hydraulic systems;• modulated shift transmissions;• greater breakout and tramming capacities by using larger engines and buckets;• operators' compartments have been enlarged and better seats,• joystick controls and air-conditioned cabs have been utilized'• major cost savings have been realized through tire maintenance improvements; and• major savings, safety improvements and increased ore recovery by using remote controls.After reciting the improvements listed above, and the list is by no means exhaustive, it is quite obvious that scooptrams are a mature product and that major design or performance improvements will not occur in the futre. Any futher improvements will be incremental in nature. Loading, hauling, and dumping with scooptrams is a batch process and as such is limited in its total output.Continuous Load/Crush/Convey Systems:In order to improve productivity, a radical new system was required. The target was 2000 tons per shift. In 1984, to meet the goal, Inco acquired the rights to a contiunous loader from Canadian Mine Services. Inco made modifications to the original prototype machine, such as: (I) conversion from rail mounted to crawlers for increased mobility; (2) a hydraulic cooling system was added; (3) flight bars were changed from cast to forged; (4) motor horsepower increased to 200 hp from 150 hp. Emerging from these modifications came a machine known as the CL-looo Oscilloader (Fig. 1).The CL-looo Oscilloader is an electric hydraulic 35-ton machine which is crawler mounted and has a drawbar pull of 30 tons. It has an adjustable frequency, oscillating lip which simulates the digging action of a manual .shovel. This action agitates and lifts the muckpile enough to allow it to settle by gravity onto the chain and flight conveyor table which then removes the ore to the tail end for discharge into either a crusher, a conveyor, a truck, or a combination of these.Late in 1985, six oscilloaders were fabricated and put into Inco mines for field trials. At Creighton Mine some early field trials were conducted with a rail mounted continuous loader loading directly into 140 cu.ft. Granby cars. Much of the field testing was in VRM drawpoints with the Oscilloader loading into 20-ton trucks or into Teletrams . At Levack Mine, by puttmg the truck on remote control, it was possible to have the operator run the Oscilloader and load his own truck (Fig. 2). At McCreedy West Mine, Copper Cliff North Mine, and Copper Cliff South Mine, the Oscilloaders discharged directly into 26-ton trucks."

In 1984 and 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the Meadow Valley Range Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-156) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Clark and Lincoln Counties, NV, about 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas, NV. The Johnston and Fitchett prospect, in the northern part of the study area, has more than 3 million tons of marginal perlite reserves suitable for many commercial uses. A preliminary mining feasibility estimate suggests perlite could be profitably mined from the study area; however, it is unlikely these perlite deposits will be developed in the foreseeable future because of unfavorable market conditions. Zeolite minerals occur in alteration zones adjacent to perlite deposits at the Johnston and Fitchett prospect, but high quality material is closer to potential markets. A metalliferous black shale unit containing 800,000 tons of subeconomic resources may extend into the study area at the Bradshaw vanadium prospect on the northwest boundary. Limestone, stone, sand, and gravel occurrences are wide-spread, but other suitable deposits in the region are more accessible to potential markets. Seven prospects in and near the study area were examined. The entire study area is leased for oil and gas exploration. A group of perlite placer claims covering more than 480 acres was located in the 1940's in the northern part of the study area. A small group of lode claims was located in the mid 1950's in the southwest part of the study area. No mining claims are currently (1985) held inside the study area. No mineral production is known from within the study area.

The Bureau of Mines developed a procedure that enables substitution of zinc cathodes for the aluminum cathodes normally used in commercial zinc electro-winning. Using zinc cathodes eliminates the necessity for stripping and makes it possible to electrowin zinc from solutions derived from material containing excessive amounts of soluble fluorides; for example, zinc concentrates obtained as a byproduct of fluorspar mining in Kentucky and Illinois. To demonstrate the viability of using zinc cathodes, fluoride-containing zinc concentrate was roasted, leached, and purified according to current commercial practice. Electrolysis was carried out in 0.8-, 1-, 5, and 10-liter cells at 35° to 40° C with a cathode-current density of 8 amp/dm2 in a solution containing 65 g/l Zn++ and 200 g/l H2S04 using PbO2 anodes. Zinc deposits were produced on zinc cathodes with good morphology and excellent current efficiency (90 to 94 pct) in solutions containing enough fluoride (~0.5 g/l, F+) to cause sticking of zinc to aluminum cathodes. The approach described has failed previously because of severe solution-level corrosion of the zinc cathodes. The present investigation found that the use of a simple mechanical barrier to prevent oxygen migration from the anode was sufficient to prevent solution-level corrosion of the zinc cathode starting sheet.

INTRODUCTION The determination and use of mechanical properties of rock in engineering and rock mechanics are rapidly developing. Many of these properties are determined on intact rock specimens; thus, their application and repre¬sentation of rock mass properties may be limited. How¬ever, relative information often provides useful guidance in the solution to mine design and stability problems. Summarized in this chapter are some of the stan¬dardized techniques and procedures currently used to obtain these mechanical properties. Typical applications of the use of these properties are also presented. Stan¬dardized techniques include those advanced by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM), US Bureau of Mines (USBM), Canadian Dept. of Mines and Technical Surveys, South African Institute of Min¬ing and Metallurgy, and other individual investigators. Information on the mechanical properties of rock and the behavior of the rock under a given system of stresses represents a necessary part of the information for rational engineering design for any given mining op¬eration. The mining method, the type and extent of sup¬port, the extraction ratio, the overall dimensions of the mine, and the orientation of the rooms and pillars are all decisions that are influenced by the mechanical prop¬erties of the ore, roof, and floor material under various stress systems and the magnitude and direction of the in situ stresses (Hooker, Bickel, and Aggson, 1972). Initial mechanical property information regarding a structure or mine property is generally obtained by two basic techniques: (1) static and dynamic property tests are conducted on intact and fractured rock specimens of exploratory drill core, and (2) dynamic properties are obtained by borehole logging techniques. When mining access becomes available, and as the mining horizon is expanded, additional information can be ob¬tained to verify preliminary mine design values. This chapter presents some of the standardized tech¬niques and equipment currently used in obtaining me¬chanical property data in the laboratory. The properties considered are: (1) uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock core specimens, (2) uniaxial compressive strength of rock cores containing planes of weakness, (3) triaxial compressive strength of intact rock core specimens, (4) triaxial compressive strength of cores with a plane of weakness, (5) Young's modulus, (6) Poisson's ratio, (7) density or apparent specific gravity, (8) modulus of rupture, (9) indirect tensile strength, and (10) creep characteristics. Where possible, an at¬tempt will be made to evaluate each property measure¬ment in relation to the problems of rock mechanics and application of results. TEST SPECIMENS The selection and care of drill core for laboratory testing require some consideration. It is recognized that laboratory-determined properties are not necessarily rep¬resentative of an in situ rock mass property. However, relative information between beds or zones of interest is still valuable information in selecting mining horizons and preliminary design criteria. To provide statistical data the number of drill core samples selected to repre¬sent each of the areas of interest should be from a mini¬mum of three to a maximum of ten test specimens. A judgment must also be made on site as to whether the recovered drill core should be wrapped and sealed in plastic to preserve moisture. On the one hand investiga¬tions of air-dried and saturated specimens have shown that moisture significantly affects the elastic properties and strengths of many rock materials (Obert, Windes, and Duvall, 1946; Colback and Wiid, 1965); on the other hand it is apparent that most core drilling is done with water which may saturate the specimen to a greater extent than in the in-situ condition. Whether or not the decision is made to retain the moisture, the core should be delivered to the laboratory as soon as possible after recovery for subsequent specimen preparation and testing. Specifications Shape: The shape of the specimens influences lab¬oratory testing in two ways: (1) time and cost of sam¬ple preparation and (2) strength of the material. Cy¬lindrical specimens of drill core are by far the least time-consuming to prepare for static or dynamic labora¬tory testing. In addition, the cylindrical shape lends it¬self to a more uniform stress distribution throughout the sample than other shapes, such as rectangles and hexa¬gons. The compressive strengths of various shapes have been studied (Grosvenor, 1963, and Price, 1960), and results indicate that the cylindrical specimens usually provide the highest strength for a given height-diameter ratio. However, reduction in strength from a cylindrical shape to a rectangular in situ pillar is not regarded as significant in relation to other considerations such as planes of weakness in a pillar or safety factors in the design process. Length-Diameter Ratio: The length-to-diameter ra¬tio, LID, has a significant effect on the compressive strength. Various recommendations have been made to use standard LID ratios ranging from 2 to 2.5 to 3 (ASTM, 1975c; ISRM, 1972). However, past work by others such as Obert, Windes, and Duvall (1946) has shown that excellent results can be obtained using LID ratios from 2 > (LID) > >/s. In selecting an LID ratio for testing, one should keep in mind the amount of material available for testing. In many instances, this may be limited. Thus, a shorter specimen such as 1: 1 LID may be necessary to provide enough test data for statistical analysis of results. Sec¬ond, it may be desirable to obtain elastic constants dur¬ing the test. This generally requires instrumentation such as linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) or strain gages near the center of the specimen. "This paper discusses a method to build a calibrated comminution circuit model, using historic operating data and blend information that is useful for forecasting and optimising plant performance, as well as evaluating expansion opportunities. A preferred method for building a calibrated power-based comminution model is discussed and justified based on two case studies, offering low-cost and effective strategies to utilise existing information for the maximum possible benefit.The first example is the Lefa Gold Mine located in Guinea, West Africa operating a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball milling circuit with recycle crushing (SABC). Daily blend information and operating data was utilised to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit. The least squares regression method was used to solve the SAG mill specific energy requirement and the operating work index (Wio) for each individual ore type. The calibrated model was used to evaluate expansion strategies to sustain throughput at higher proportions of fresh ore based on the proposed life-of-mine schedule.The second example is the Ok Tedi Copper-Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea operating a SAG and ball milling circuit (SAB). The circuit limitation would often shift between the SAG mill and the ball mill due to variable ore characteristics and feed blend. Typical SAG mill relief strategies, such as recycle crushing or secondary crushing, required significant capital expenditure and the potential throughput benefit would vary depending on ore type, making economic justification difficult. Daily blend information and operating data was used to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit to identify ore types that might benefit from higher blast intensities to increase fines content, thus relieving the SAG mill limitation and increasing overall throughput without a major capital investment.Citation:Zawadski, A L and Putland, B G, 2016. In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigation relative to the causes, behavior, and control of anthracite-mine fires, attention was directed toward the correlation between the temperature of oxidation and the gaseous oxidation products in the range of temperatures between 100° and 350°C4/. These tests, made on a high-grade anthracite to determine the amount of oxygen consumed and the mounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane evolved when air was passed through samples of the anthracite at various elevated temperatures, showed that the gases evolved and their relative proportions vary with temperature, constitute a means for determining the probable temperature of the anthracite, and thus permit detection of incipient heating beers dangerous fire hazard exists. As the relationships mentioned are affected somewhat by the amount of previous oxidation of the coal, it was deemed desirable to know to what extent they might vary owing to this cause. It was also considered desirable to have a means for estimating the extent of oxidation from the gas analysis, as this would permit a more accurate estimate of probable temperature. Finally, it seemed desirable to know how much the composition of coal might vary over an extended period of oxidation, since this was previously suggested5/ as a possible means for estimating the probable maximum oxidation temperature to which a sample of coal had been subjected.

The nature of certain pernicious dusts commonly encountered in the removal of iron ore from the underground mines of the Lake Superior district is recognized, and appropriate measures for the protection of individuals subjected to these dusts have been applied in most mines for more than 10 years. Undoubtedly the principal concern has been demanded by dusts that contain as a constituent silicon dioxide in its free or uncombined state, the mineral we all know as quartz or chert. Investigators1 agree that among the factors that determine injurious exposure are: the composition of the dust, the concentration suspended at the breathing level and the duration of the exposure. We have on hand data that describe the experience of several underground iron-ore mines in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Wisconsin in regard to these factors, which in a large measure also reflect the general experience of the other mines of the area. We believe that a discussion of these data will indicate the effectiveness of the dust-control methods that have been considered good practice and that have been employed over a long period of time. A silicosis-prevention program was ini- tiated by the iron mines of the Upper Peninsula in 1934 and records of mine dustiness are available from that date to the present time. For dust conditions previous to 1934 the results of observations conducted in other industries can be utilized together with local information pertaining to the development and initial application of rock-drilling equipment. Development of Rock DriI,I.s Thc earliest percussion rock drill that later had any industrial use was patented in this country in 1851.2 This machine was later modified and improved in many respects but its Piston-Type design remained standard for drilling equipment in most mines for the next 63 years.3 The piston drill was operated either by air or by steam. It employed a solid drill steel, fastened directly to the reciprocating piston. The drilling was done dry except in holes directed at an angle below the horizontal. For these water was manually injected into the hole and the pumping action of the rod expelled the sludge. The dry cuttings from drillings inclined above the horizontal fell from the hole by their own weight. A development of major importance from the standpoint of dust generation and control occurred with the invention by J. G. Leyner of a hammer-type rock drill that embodied the essential feature of a drill steel with a hollow core. His patent was secured in 1897. The machine was a radical departure in drilling method. During the past two years, a large number of creep tests has been carried out on electrolytic lead, special assay lead and ordinary refined (Port Pirie) lead. Some of these tests have already been reported.1§ In addition, an attempt has been made to estimate the influence of the individual elements present in small traces in Port Pirie lead. The present paper gives the results obtained when small additions are made to "U" lead of the composition shown in Table 1.(which has been used throughout these investigations during the past few years). The additions were silver, antimony, bismuth and zinc. The results of the addition of tellurium have already been communicated. This investigation was intended to run parallel with a similar one using electrolytic lead as a basis and adding one element at a time.Actually, the experiments using "U" lead have got rather ahead of the others. The important point has emerged, however, that the effect of a .given addition may be appreciably influenced by the presence of traces of other elements.In most of these tests, an initial stress of 500lb. per sq. in. has been used. Using liquid tin as the solvent metal, the heats of solution of silver and gold in dilute Ag-Au-Sn alloys have been determined at 723°K by solution calorimetry. From the values obtained, the various enthalpy interaction coefficients in the liquid solutions have been calculated. The self-interaction coefficients Au and Ag values of 2413 and -6322 cal per g-atom in binary Au-Sn and Ag-Sn alloys, respectively. For an alloy containing 0.04 mole fraction Ag, Au is equal to 2443 cal per g-atom, and in an alloy containing 0.04 mole fraction Au, Ag has a value of —8883 cal per g-atom. Ag Au has been determined as —2650 cal per g-atom. ADDITION of a second solute to a dilute binary alloy may cause striking changes in the thermodynamic characteristics of the alloy. As yet, such influences cannot be reliably predicted and it is only by accumulation and critical assessment of data that definite patterns can be established. Solute interactions in dilute solutions were first treated mathematically by Wagner,1 who derived expressions for the Gibbs energy interaction coefficients. For an alloy consisting of. two dilute solutes, i and j, in a solvent s, these coefficients are given by: where yi is the activity coefficient of component i and x represents the mole fraction of solute or solvent. Other interaction coefficients have since been established in terms of the various partial molar thermodynamic properties of an alloy; the definitions of these are summarized in a recent paper by Lupis and Elliott.2 Mathematical and experimental studies of such coefficients have received much attention recently, providing a very useful theoretical background to an understanding of the nature of solute interactions taking place in dilute solutions. One of the definitions to arise from such work has been the extension of Wagner's treatment by Lupis and Elliott4 to include an enthalpy interaction coefficient, defined as. where ?Hi is the relative partial molar enthalpy of component i. ?Hi is related to the relative partial molar enthalpy at infinite dilution, ?Hio, and to the enthalpy interaction coefficients by the expression: Values of ?Hi can often be obtained with a high degree of accuracy by calorimetry, and, if the composition of the alloy is carefully controlled by making calculated solute additions throughout a series of measurements, application of Eq. [2] will enable reliable enthalpy interaction coefficients to be determined. Partial heats of solution must be investigated as a function of solute concentrations down to xi = 0, and, since ? values are obtained from the slope of mi plotted against x, great care must be taken to obtain precise data. The data for binary systems which are presently available often require extrapolation of ?Hi values from compositions as great as xi = 0.05 or even 0.1 to obtain limiting heats of solution. Reliable enthalpy interaction coefficients are thus impossible to obtain from published data for most of the alloy systems already investigated. The aim of the present work was to determine values of Au, Ag, Ag, and Au in the limit xsn -1 for the relatively simple Ag-Au-Sn system and from these results to gain some insight into the possible influence

Variations in overburden geology must be considered in applying subsidence prediction methodologies developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). To characterize rock mass overlying high-extraction coal mines, the USBM utilizes a computer spreadsheet program and modified Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system. The spreadsheet calculates an RMR based on a bed's engineering properties determined from core logs and laboratory tests. An in situ deformation modulus and a bending stiffness are computed for each bed. Stiffness-versus-depth plots identify groups of beds with similar stiffness. Large variations in stiffness between adjacent beds are considered significant horizontal discontinuities where slip is likely. Time domain reflectometry (TDR) is used to verify this hypothesis by measuring shear displacement along such discontinuities. A model of the overburden is built by assuming that a near-surface laminated beam exists above a transition zone in which large plastic slip occurs along horizontal discontinuities. Increasingly thicker groups of beds are modeled to determine the most probable beam thickness based on a comparison with measured deflection profiles. The inverse of maximum beam deflection is an index parameter known as "bridging potential," a single value that incorporates both overburden geology and mine geometry.

"Preparation and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) transmission spectra of aluminum fluoroberyllate glasses, MgF2-CaF2-SrF2-A1Fr BeF2 (MCSA-Be) and MgF2-CaF2-SrF2-AlFrYFrBeF2 (MCSAY-Be), were studied. The influence of YF3 and BeF2 on the thermal stabilization against crystallization and VUV transmittance was investigated. With increasing the BeF2 content, the crystallization tendency decreased and the absorption edge shifted to shorter wavelength in the MCSA-Be and MCSAY-Be glasses. The MCSA-20Be glass composition exhibited the shortest wavelength UV absorption edge (-147 nm) and the highest transmittance at 157 nm (60% for 2 mm sample thickness). The transmission values at 157 nm and the slope (steepness) of the absorption edge were found to be significantly influenced by the trace amount of Fe2+ derived from the BeF2 raw materials.IntroductionPure beryllium fluoride is known to be an only fluoride that forms one component glass on cooling from the molten state and is structurally similar to silica with [SiO4]4- tetrahedra. Molten BeF2 is highly viscous with a viscosity of about 106 poise near its liquidus temperature at 550""C[l]. The addition of modifying fluorides such as LiF, NaF or KF to BeF2 substantially decreases the viscosity[2]. Glass forming region of binary fluoroberyllate glasses has been mainly reported by several authors [3]. LiFBeF2 binary system is structually analogy for Mg0-Si02 system from their phase diagram and ratio of ionic radius for each cation and anion, respectively. LiF-BeF2 binary glasses seems to be promising candidates for the extreme deep vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) transmitting optical materials owing to their larger band gap. However, it is chemically unstable, and so, have no practical application for lens systems in micro lithography equipments and substrate materials for F2 (157nm) excimer laser[4]. There are also few reports on the VUV transparency of multicomponent aluminium fluoroberyllate glasses from the view point of their compositional dependencies. The purpose of this paper is to prepare deep VUV transmitting optical materials and determine the optimum glass compositions for aluminium fluoroberyllate glasses investigating their thermal stabilization against crystallization."

The high content of sodium and potassium in sinter is harmful for blast furnace ironmaking. Reductive sintering technology can remove more alkali metals than conventional sintering process. In order to improve the removal ratios of Na and K, reductive sintering with both CO-containing flue gas circulation and carbon-bearing pellet was conducted in this study. Experimental results show that all indexes except the VSV and P were improved in reductive sintering with CO circulation. Flue gas circulation technique combined with carbon-bearing pellets were beneficial to reductive sintering, because it could maintain good sintering indexes and enhance the removal of Na, K. The best removal ratios of Na, K and reduction degree of iron oxides were 20.37%, 63.73% and 23.76%. In reductive finished sinter, silicate mineral becomes the important binder phase, and main iron mineral phases are wustite (FexO) and magnetite (Fe3O4).

Recovery of zinc, copper and nickel from electroplating waste solutions was achieved 'by using a Pulsated Percolated Porous Electrode "3PE" reactor on a pilot plant scale. Intensity - potential curves were used to study the possibility of metal removal and to define the working potential range. The present study describes the use of the 3PE reactors in several electroplating industrial units for the decontamination of their effluents. These effluents were issued from different industrial solutions such as cyanide, sulfate, chloride and Watts baths. Using the stripping curves, deposition rates and electrical efficiencies were determined as function of the metal concentrations in these effluents. Their decontamination could be achieved to the level of few ppm of metals with reasonable current efficiencies. The recovery rates of zinc and copper were about 93 and 99 %, respectively. The. treated effluents contained less than 7 and 1 % of the initial contents of Zn and Cu, respec¬tively. This process allows the recycling of the recovered metals and leads to water saving.

Tests indicated that effective recovery of pyrite from a coarse Witwatersrand quartzitic ore can be accomplished by intensified flotation in an air-sparged hydrocyclone. Air is fed through the porous cylindrical wall of the hydrocyclone into a swirling layer of slury. Hydrophobic particles are attached selectively to small air bubbles, which form a froth and are recovered through the overflow. Hydrophilic particles pass out in the underflow. A spigot in which flow is restricted by an orifice was found to be more successful in preventing blockage by wood chips than an annular opening between a pedestal and the cylinder wall. Pyrite recoveries of 85 to 93 per cent at grades of 35 to 40 per cent sulphur were obtained in the air-sparged hydroclone with residence times of about 1 second. Comparative tests in a batch flotation cell after 320 seconds yielded average recoveries of up to 96 per cent, but with a mean grade of 32,5 per cent sulphur. A high colector dosage of 120 g/t was required in the cyclone, compared with the 40 gft used in conventional operations. An air flowrate of about 150 I/min was adequate at a slury feed rate of 35l/min. Particle sizes between 38 and 106µm yielded the best flotation results.

METAL PRICES RISE WITHIN the past nine months, the mining industry of the world has been revivified by a spectacular price advance for the metals. ln fact, practically all geological raw materials have been marked up during this period. Reviving industry started the price rise, but the armaments race among the nations has intensified it. These factors, coupled with our decided building shortage, which must be made up, will probably maintain metal prices at decidedly favourable levels over the next two or three years, or longer. OUR MINERAL CIVILIZATION It is interesting to recall that in the past hundred years, while the white population of the world increased some three ta three and a half fold, the consumption of minerals increased seventy-five fold. In other words, ours is a mineral civilization. If we disregard short slumps, which we will occasionally experience, it seems certain that the bread upward trend in mineral consumption will be maintained for many decades into the future. Nations without reasonably abundant and diverse mineral deposits will eventually become nations without much power. Canada is blessed with a splendid store of minerals. Its mineral industry is now facing an exceptionally rosy future. What of the mineral industry of Nova Scotia? GEOLOGICAL RESEARCH ALLOWED TO LAG RN NOVA SCONA Many years ago, when geological science was in? its infancy, much geological study was carried on in Nova Scotia. In 1827, Francis Alger began work on the iron ores in the Bay of Fundy region. In 1886, E. R. Faribault began his series of remarkable papers on Nova Scotia geology. Between these dates, many others published papers on the geology of the Province. The most outstanding of this early group of geologists was Sir William Dawson, whose published works on Nova Scotian geology extended over the period from 1845 to 1891.

It has been possible to largely contain converter aisle emissions of SO2 and fumes in the case of batch-wise operated Peirce Smith converters during normal blowing periods with the help of suitably designed primary hoods. Controlling the escape of off-gas during the periods of turning the converter in or out of the stack has been problematic in the past. Effective automated control systems have been developed for the purpose and successfully applied in smelter operations in Spain, Taiwan and Germany. This has led not only to an effective reduction of emissions in the converter environment but also to an improvement in the converter operation.
