This review paper describes recent advances that have been made at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) in Brisbane in developing a framework for simulating the flotation process. The work has been carried out collaboratively with the Mineral Processing Research Unit of the University of Cape Town in South Africa (UCT), as part of the Australian Minerals Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 Project. The framework consists of four components, namely – the mathematical model of the flotation process, suitable measurement tools for characterising the flotation cell, a computer program for modelling and simulating the process and the plantas for testing and validating the flotation models. A brief description of the model is first presented, then a number of applications of the model are described. The paper shows how the model can be used to optimise the performance of flotation cells, and then two case studies on the modelling methodologies are described. Finally the current and future plans of the project are outlined.

An anhydrous chlorination process has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for the production of copper, ferric oxide, and sulfur from chalcopyrite. The first part of the process is a chlorination step in which elemental sulfur and a mixture of iron-copper chlorides are produced. This paper describes the second step of the process in which the copper and iron chlorides are reacted with oxygen to selectively convert the iron chloride to ferric oxide and chlorine leaving the copper in the chloride form. The chlorides are pulverized and dropped countercurrent to a flow of oxygen in a vertical 20-cm-diam. reactor at 800° C. By leaching with brine, the copper chloride may be separated from the insoluble iron oxide and reduced to copper powder by electrowinning. It has been demonstrated that 70 to 80 pct of the iron can be converted to oxide in a single-stage operation with a chlorine content in the offgas of 80 pct. After removal of the oxygen, this chlorine could be recycled to the chlorination step. A two-stage operation will convert 98 to 99 pct of the iron in the mixture to insoluble oxides. The offgas from the second stage contains 70 pct chlorine.

In the process of mining coal today, our greatest asset, the coal miner, is faced with the indirect and direct consequence of underground mining operations. The indirect considerations may be the rank of the coal seam, the amount of overburden, geological factors, seam permeability and cracks. The introduction of newer, bigger and faster coal-producing face equipment having the capability to cut or rip through the bedding planes, cleats and micropores of the coal seam brings about rapid liberation of gas accompanied by greater concentrations of coal dust, has exerted a direct consideration and greater demand upon mine ventilation systems and dust control. The purpose of mine ventilation is to provide sufficient pure air to the miners working underground and to dilute, render harmless, and carry away all the dangerous and noxious gases. The mining operations which create coal dust are cod cutting, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, dumping and movement of face equipment. The created fine dust causes the propagation of explosions. When quantities of coal dust with no methane present are raked in a sufficiently dense cloud in the presence of a source of ignition, an explosion is possible.

Molybdenite is the most important molybdenum concentrate, which is mainly recovered as a by-product from porphyry copper deposits. Due to the low efficiency of purification processes such as flotation in the reduction of copper content of molybdenum concentrate to a standard level (i.e., less than 0.5 wt.%), further purification by a hydrometallurgical method is required. Although different types of chemical reagents were found to be effective in the leaching of copper minerals from molybdenum concentrate, the mechanisms of these processes remain largely unexplored. In this study, optimal conditions for maximum copper leaching (> 99%) were obtained at the concentration of HCl = 1 M, FeCl3 = 0.5 M, CuCl2 = 0.05 M, CaCl2 = 0.5 M at 75 °C, 500 rpm, and S:L = 1:10 during 60 min. CuCl2 was identified as the most effective leaching reagent for copper dissolution in agreement with Visual MINTEQ model results due to the formation of various types of copper chloride complexes. Furthermore, the electrochemical behaviors of FeCl3, CuCl2, and CaCl2 reagents before and after the leaching process were investigated by the cyclic voltammetry technique. The results of cyclic voltammograms at different scan rates verified the presence of copper chloride complexes, and ferric ions as the oxidizing reagents for better dissolution of copper sulfides. Based on kinetic study results of shrinking core models, both chemical and diffusion reactions controlled the copper leaching process with an obtained activation energy of 33.56 kJ/mol. For recovery of the leached copper, the precipitation process was done by the addition of Na2S at 45 °C, S/Cu = 1, and pH = 9.

The largest structure along the Tauern highway section between Salzburg and Villach is the 6.4-km-long Tauern Tunnel. The major geotechnical problems that came up surprisingly while driving the headings of that tunnel and their successful solution form the content of this article. A detailed discussion is presented of the special construction methods developed by systematic application of the principles of the New Austrian Tunneling Method with which even very heavily squeezing ground with large excavation areas can be mastered reliably and economically.

"Aerial surveys of the open pits have been conducted regularly at Lake Asbestos of Quebec, Ltd. -a subsidiary of American Smelting and Re-fining Company -since 1958. Ground controls are supplied by Lake Asbestos, and a topographic map of the pits at a scale of 1 in. to 50 ft., with 2-foot contour intervals, is obtained by aerial photography. The information from the topographic map is then transferred by the Lake Asbestos engineering staff to sections from which the volumes removed are calculated. Considering the size and complexity of the operation, this system has proved to be the cheapest, fastest and most accurate way of determining the quantities of rock and overburden removed. More than 11,000,000 tons of ore and waste are mined each year in three different pits. Further-more, the nature, shape and extent of the orebodies make it necessary to mine on many (up to eight) benches of a pit during a single year. In addition, there are sections of the pits where it is impossible or un-safe to survey the crest of some benches by standard ground methods. For these reasons, the tonnages obtained by truck count are checked and adjusted by aerial survey. These surveys are now taking place every six months. With this system, it is possible for a two-man surveying crew to look after all field work in the mine area."

The purpose of this paper is to discuss production and roof control problems associated with directional lateral stresses in an in situ stress field and the approach that Inland Steel Coal Company made in trying to cope with them. Before proceeding, a description of the mine location, product, geology, restraints, and mine history is in order. The mine is located in Hamilton County in Southeastern Illinois. It produces a high volatile metalurgical coal and is slated to produce 2.1 MTY. Product ion is in the Illinois No. 5 seam at a depth of 930 feet, approximately 490 feet below sea level. The scam height averages from 5.5 to 6.0 feet throughout the reserves with height increasing in the eastern reserve area to approximately feet and a 5 Foot average in the West. The scam tends to dip to the North, North East, but is locally very undulating. The Galatia channel washout outlines the eastern boundary of the reserves and there is a split coal area toward the central part of the property than runs south-southeast. The top above the #5 seam is laminated medium gray shale called Dykersburg. Individual shale bedding planes vary locally From ½ to 1" in thickness to a more normal thickness of 1 to 1 ½ with some areas being interlayed by thin carboncous material. The top normally must be considered as materially competent. Even though the mine is still relatively small in area with only 1.3 million tons of total production to (late, we have encountered dense zones of slicker sides and premining, stress cracks (joints). There are also areas of siltstone, that vary from a few inches to several feet thick, and areas of rider coal, clay instrusions, and rolls. We have crossed lineament concentrations that show strong evidence of corelation to localise top problems. These are being monitored closely to see their predictability on our present and future mining conditions. The face cleat runs N 55° E and butt cleat runs S. 25° E. On a regional basis, there are several anticlinal belts that trend in a northerly direction. The one major restraint is that Inland does not own surface subsidence rights. Therefore, a partial extraction mining plan is being followed. The Holland-Gaddy formula for pillar strength design is used to calculate theortical pillar sides. When production began in March of 1979, it was noted that ground control problems occurred as we drove north entries. East-west cross cuts tended to have better working conditions. This phenomia occurred from a couple hundred feet, but seemed to dispate as we got away from the men and material shafts. Once the production shaft was connected and enough entries extended for installation of belts, ground control problems were again experienced in north-south headings. It was also observed that when mining north-south headings with east-west crosscuts, if the crosscut was driven through ahead and supported, the intersection was stable upon entry connection. This held true even where fairly extreme ground control, problems were encountered. The reverse held true. when driving east-west headings with north-south crosscuts. At this time, we started searching in earnest for a working theory to explain this roof phenomia. It also became the first step of what eventually was a four step sequence to derive a workable solu¬tion to the problem. The combination of the many geological changes and the fact that north-south condition was at times intermitent, helped to disguise the stress field. The mine also being in a fairly virgin area with no mines in approximately 25 milt, radius, meant we didn't have a reliable case history to examine. Various theories were researched before it was concluded that our primary ground control problem was a directional lateral stress Field, with the major stress axis in an east-west direction. Narragansett Bay Commission’s (NBC) Pawtucket Tunnel Project includes construction of the 11,600-ft long, 30-ft ID, deep rock tunnel. This paper presents insight into the features and benefits of lump-sum, design-build that led NBC to select it as the project delivery method. The use of a design-build contracting process that included proprietary meetings to discuss and obtain feedback on Alternative Technical Concepts as well as to facilitate reaching consensus on modifications to the GBR-B is also described. The discussion includes features and benefits of design-build process that not only addressed NBC’s desired outcomes, but also allowed the Design-Builder to propose several innovative changes to the Base Technical Concepts included in the bid documents, and to develop a GBR-C that was compatible with their proposed means and methods of construction and addressed what they believed to be the more significant subsurface risks on the project.

The effects of several fluxes on purification, microstructures and properties of A00 aluminium have been studied. The experimental results and analyses indicate that many cracks and large porosities exist in the surface film above the melt purified by C2Cl6 and that the film is floe and mostly composed of AhO3 and pure aluminum, which carries many carbon particles and AlCh not fully volatilized. And then over 50% of the all-melting residue is pure aluminum, which is one of the major reasons for high melting loss. Moreover, because of a mass of gas bubbles and a state of seethe, there exist many inclusions which size is under l0µm in the microstructure of A00 aluminum purified with C2Cl6 or fluxes containing C2Cl6- With this purifying method, the aluminum crystal grains are extended along the radius that was observed firstly and the average crystal size of A00 aluminum are about 100µm~150µm. In addition, small size inclusions have little affected on tensile strength and micro inclusions under l0µm have little affected on elongation.

As part of its research and development activities concerning coal mine operational/emergency communications sys terns, the Bureau of Mines commissioned several contractors to conduct electromagnetic (EM) noise studies and measurements that would aid the development of improved coal mine operational/emergency communications systems. The bulk of the noise studies and measurements were conducted in 1971. The Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center (PMSRC) inherited the responsibility for monitoring the electromagnetic noise activities by mid-to-late 1971, and initiated a review and evaluation of the current and planned electromagnetic noise work. Arthur D. Little, Inc., (ADL) was asked by PMSRC to assist it in performing this review and evaluation by placing stronger emphasis on certain tasks of existing Contract No. H0122026. This technical memorandum report presents the findings, conclusions, and recommendations of our review and evaluation of the electromagnetic noise measurements of the five contractors we were asked to examine. Our review and evaluation effort included meetings and telephone discussions with technical staff of each contractor; serving as Technical Discussion Leader of a "Contractor's Round Table Meeting on EM Noise, Surface and Subsurface, Operating and Non-Operating Mines" called by the Bureau of Mines; examination and discussion of contractor reports and relevant open literature; sample verification calculations; and the documentation of our findings, conclusions, and recommendations by this report.

"Electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) residue was mixed with shale and fly ash as the main materials to make solidification/sintering brick for the utilization of the residue from EMD production. The effects of sintering temperature, sintering time, solid waste content and cooling process on its mechanical properties and toxic elements solidification were investigated according to compressive strength and leaching toxicity. The results showed that the calcined residue had capability of solidifying toxic metals and exhibited perfect strength after treated in the optimal parameters of EMD residue below 50%, temperature at 1000-1100°C, time3-5h, and semi-quenched at 600°C1 InstructionSolid clay-brick holds the leading position among building materials for a very long time in China. The traditional technique of making clay-brick has the drawbacks of backward process, simple facilities and single product. Since Chinese Reform and Opening-up, urban-rural construction and real estate have been booming with the rapidly development of national economy and science technology. The problems of ruining fertile land, environment contamination and high energy consumption in the traditional technique of clay-brick making have not been solved yet. On the other hand, more than 7 billion tons of industrial wastes are accumulated over years which occupies over 6.7 million hectares filed and causes serious environmental problems[1-31. Strategy present in ""The Chinese Agenda of the 21st Century"" required the production of wall materials less energy conservation, land saving and waste recycling.Coal gangue[4-9l, fly ash[I0- 13l, sludge from waste water treatment and tailings of gypsum, pyrite, copper mine, high silicon containing iron, asbestos and ects [l4-lSJ are the solid wastes used for brick making around the world. There are two kinds of process for brick making, high temperature sintering and low temperature steam curing[19•201. Although the technology of two brick making made great progress and got widely application in construction field, no precedent for preparing sintering-bricks with EMD residue as materials occurred in China because of its complicated processing technics and lack of sufficient practical experience to guarantee the bricks' quality.In this study, EMD residue was mixed with shale and fly ash as the main materials to make solidification/sintering brick. The effects of sintering temperature, sintering time, solid waste content and cooling process on its mechanical properties and toxic elements solidification were investigated according to compressive strength and leaching toxicity."

The purpose of this work is to study and make comparative analysis of germanium extraction and related valuable components of the sublimates from the burning of domestic power coals (product 1) and germanium sulfide materials, which are a waste of lead-zinc production (product 2), by traditional chemical methods (distillation of germanium in the form of tetrachloride from raw and preliminary burning source) and by microbial bioleaching of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. The dependence of the germanium extraction by chemical methods from phase composition of the initial raw materials was installed. The germanium tetrachloride extraction from products 1 and 2 were 78.50 and 19.52%, respectively. Such difference in indexes on extraction, is caused by germanium confinement as concomitant trace component to the basic phases to carriers. The share of acid-non-soluble compounds (tetragonal modification GeO2 and silikogermanaties) in the product 1 account for 21.5 % of germanium. Ratio between acid-soluble and acid-not -soluble germanium forms are 19.52 and 80.48 %, respectively, in the product 2. Our experiments have shown, that implementation of restorative firing (with addition of 30-40 % carbon at 1150 0?) of sulfide product 2 considerably impacted on the extraction of germanium tetrachloride (91.76 %) in comparison with its low enough extraction at straight distillation of hydrochloric acid (19.52 %). The results are confirmed by a set of physical methods. The results of processing the same so-called hard phase?s material (product 2) with the help of microorganisms are presented. It Has been established, that selected strains of bacteria are capable of extracting from initial raw materials not only macro components (iron, zinc, lead, manganese, aluminum, nickel), but also micro impurity of rare metals (gallium, germanium, zirconium). It is important that these metals were not extracted by traditional chemical methods (with application of aggressive conditions and heats) independently of the phase composition of the source. Almost complete extractions of germanium in solution using sulfur-oxidizing bacteria take place in the first day of the process independently of the phase composition of the source and the type strain. The results have practical significance and can be the basis for developing a unified biotechnological method of technogenic waste processing with a purpose of their sterilization and detoxification with simultaneous obtaining concentrates of valuable metals. "Observational data suggest that the ground surface subsidence profile from multiple-seam longwall mining is rather different from that of single seam. Despite the increase of coal production from multiple-seam mining, available predictive methods are mostly unable to predict a reliable subsidence profile for multiple-seam extractions. In this paper, a case study of multiple-seam subsidence is modelled using physical modelling techniques. The subsidence mechanism as revealed in the physical model is explained and the differences between multiple and single-seam subsidence are highlighted. On the same case study, a commonly used influence function method (IFM) and Generalised Influence Function Method (GIFM) are utilised to predict the subsidence profile. The results are compared with predictions achieved by a newly developed predictive method based on the understanding of mechanism of the multiple-seam subsidence. Results show a significantly improved correlation between the newly developed method in comparison with the conventional IFM and GIFM. INTRODUCTIONField observations and subsidence monitoring data from multiple-seam coal mining cases show a different subsidence profile as compared with single-seam ones (Sheorey et al., 2000; Li, et al, 2007; Luo and Qiu, 2012; Unlu et al, 2013). The multiple-seam subsidence curve is generally deeper and steeper than of single-seam cases, and varies from one mining configuration to another. Various researchers had made efforts to understand the mechanism behind this phenomenon and the interaction between the two mining horizons (Li et al., 2010, Sui et al., 2014; Zhang et al., 2014). However, the mechanism of the multiple-seam subsidence is yet to be comprehensively understood (Suchowerska, 2014; Ghabraie et al., 2015b).In addition, differences between the single and multiple-seam subsidence profiles make it difficult to adapt single-seam subsidence prediction tools for predicting the subsidence over multiple-seam cases, unless significant modifications are applied This requires understanding the mechanism of the multiple-seam subsidence as the first step to achieve reliable predictive results.The mechanism of the subsidence due to a multiple-seam case study can be investigated via physical modelling. The physical model allows observing the substrata movement as well as the interaction of the two mining activities. An understanding of the mechanism of the multiple-seam subsidence can be developed based on these observations, which would provide basis for developing a subsidence prediction tool."

Research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has pursued quartz analysis for the specialized ?lter assemblies of a new worker-wearable personal dust monitor (PDM). The PDM is a real-time instrument utilizing a tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM®). Standard ?berglass TEOM ?lters cannot accommodate the desired P-7 infrared analytical method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Novel ?lter materials were tested with the objective of demonstrating this type of analysis. Low temperature ashing and spectrometric examination were employed, revealing that nylon ?ber candidate ?lters left minimal residual ash and produced no signi?cant spectral interference. Avoiding titanium dioxide in all ?lter materials proved to be a key requirement. Fine quartz particulates were collected on prototype ?lters in a Marple chamber, either open-faced or through PDMs during test runs. The ?lters were then subjected to MSHA P-7 analysis and the spectrometrically based analytical results for quartz mass were compared to reference measurements. Also, PDM instrumental mass readings were compared to ?lter gravimetric measurements. Results suggest that the P-7 method is adaptable to variations in ?lter materials and that quartz dust analysis by the P-7 method when utilizing the new ashable PDM ?lters can have accuracy and precision within 10% and 4%, respectively. This is within the declared 13% accuracy and 7–10% precision of the P-7 method itself. Instrument mass readings had modest positive bias but met NIOSH accuracy criteria. Continued work with specialized PDM ?lters is merited, as they are a new type of TEOM sample amenable to ashing analysis of particulates.

To determine in what part and to what extent creep or movement exists in an installed rock-bolt anchor and the effect of the creep or bleedoff on the tension load on a rock bolt, as well as the effect of normal mining activity on the rock-bolt load and anchor, the Bureau of Mines conducted tests in the laboratory and in two mines using four types of expansion-shell anchors, the wedge bolt, and in one mine, explosive-anchored rock bolts. Specially mounted heavy-duty springs, calibrated to obtain load readings from spring movement, were installed on the test bolts to prevent a drastic reduction in tension load caused by slipping or seating of the anchor. A dial gage, reading to 0.0001 inch, measured movement of the anchor shell against the rock and seating of the anchor wedge plug in the shell. While all bolts had electrical resistance strain gages for load reading, only readings from the laboratory tests were used because those from the field tests were erratic. The tests revealed that most load loss resulting from static loading is due to the slippage and seating of the serrations on the anchor shell into the drill-hole wall. Dynamic loading, primarily from sudden shocks from nearby blasting, and possibly from ground movement or mining activity, will cause the anchor wedge plug to seat in the anchor shell.
