"Abstract - Enigmatic hydrothermal vein/breccia/replacement Cu-Au deposits with magnetite and/or hematite are well-represented in Australian 1850 Ma to 1500 Ma terrains and associated with different-aged synorogenic intrusions in the Tennant Creek Block (ca. 1850 Ma); the Gawler-Curnamona region (1640 Ma to 1590 Ma); and the Cloncurry district (Mount Isa Eastern Fold Belt, 1540 Ma to 1500 Ma with a possible earlier event at ca. 1600 Ma). No deposits are known to be coeval with various 1780 Ma to 1610 Ma anorogenic intrusions. Deposits are hosted by many different rock-types with varying metamorphic grade including granites and various supracrustal rocks. Depth of mineralization varied from many kilometers in semiductile crust (e.g., Cloncurry deposits) to very shallow (e.g., Olympic Dam). Ore deposition near Cloncurry occurred in brittle-ductile shear zones from geochemically variable and complex, CO2-rich, 300°C to 500°C, high salinity fluids with magmatic stable isotopic signatures. Recently published studies of a giant granitoid-hosted magnetite vein complex at the Lightning Creek prospect (>1000 Mt magnetite) suggest it is a product of internal differentiation and endogenous Fe and Cu-rich hydrous-carbonic fluid phase generation within a quartz monzodiorite-monzogranite intrusion. Coupled with other field relationships, this points to a possible genetic relationship with intermediate (55 to 65 wt% SiO2) members of an alkaline and partly shoshonitic granitoid supersuite which appears to have both mantle and crustal source components from ?Nd evidence. In constrast, main-phase mineralization at Olympic Dam in the Gawler Craton is distinguished by hematite-phyllosilicate alteration and chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite zoning, reflecting fluid mixing in a high level (<250°C) system with a probable large component of meteoric water. Early high-temperature parageneses and fluid inclusions imply that the extensive hematitic breccias overprinted an older magnetite system which may have had similarities with those at Lightning Creek and Ernest Henry in the Cloncurry district.Deposits of this family are inherently difficult to find and evaluate as even within a single district, there is no reliable relationship between the location of ore and any specific combination of geophysical characteristics. Diverse alteration assemblages, geochemistry and physical characteristics suggest the deposits reflect the interaction of multi-sourced fluids with different host rocks in a wide range of geological environments. Recent discoveries and research in the Cloncurry district have extended the range of deposit models available and aid the development of a rudimentary classification in which economic and exploration characteristics can be linked to variations in the mechanisms and environments of ore formation."

Feldspathic deposits occur widely throughout the United States, but North Carolina, California, Connecticut and South Carolina accounted for over 80% of the total domestic feldspar output for the year 1973.1 Pegmatites and granites constitute the major feldspar reserves of the United States,2 and in addition, feldspar is produced as a by-product by firms whose major products are spodumene and mica.3 Feldspar is concentrated by hand-cobbing and flotation; the latter forms the major method of separating and concentrating feldspar. Feldspar flotation is practiced in the United States, Mexico, Finland, Norway, West Germany, Japan and the USSR. According to the U. S. Bureau of Mines estimates, the production of feldspar in the United States and rest of the world were 704,000 tons and 2,514,000 tons respectively. Feldspar is principally used as a flux in making glass, pottery, porcelain, enamel,-tile and other ceramic products. In recent years, the domestic feldspar industry is faced with a number of problems. As a result of increased cost of energy and the introduction in 1972 of new legislative programs relating to air, water, and noise pollution, land-use restrictions, and mined-land rehabilitation, the production costs have increased. Apart from the increased cost of operation, an operational problem exists with the feldspar producers in North Carolina, especially those in the Spruce Pine area. This problem is concerned with the use of hydrofluoric acid in the feldspar flotation. Feldspar producers in Spruce Pine, North Carolina have been discharging process waste water into the North Toe River. The mill waste water contains active fluoride ions. Noise surveys conducted in underground coal mines have consistently indicated that auger mining machines subject the operator and helpers to excessive noise exposure. The machine cutting heads have been identified as the primary noise source. This report documents the research program conducted to (1) investigate the nature of the cutting head noise problem, (2) develop noise control concepts, (3) devise in-mine survivable techniques to implement the noise control concepts, and (4) build and demonstrate prototype reduced-noise auger miner cutting heads. The dynamic forces generated during coal cutting by the brittle fracture of coal are predominently low frequency. The low-frequency (less than 1500 Hz) structural response of the cutting head, therefore, determines the noise radiated by the cutting head. The most feasible methods of reducing the cutting head low-frequency response are to increase both the structural stiffness and the low-frequency damping. A technique was devised to achieve these goals. The standard plate helix was replaced by a sand-filled hollow helix of triangular cross section, and the core diameter was increased with an attendant reduction in helix depth. Extended in-mine tests demonstrated the operational capability of the reduced-noise auger cutting heads. The simple noise control concepts are valid for all continuous miner cutting heads. The sand-filled hollow helix technique, which achieved a 10 dB(A) noise reduction for the auger, can be used on any helix-bearing Cutting head.

The equilibrium nitrogen solubility in the CaO-SiO2system was studied by a slag-gas equilibration technique, in graphite crucibles at 1823K under a CO-N2 atmosphere. The nitrogen content of the slags was determined by the Kjeldahl method. A reliable technique was used to obtain an initial nitrogen content in the master slags, from the addition and pre-melting of silicon nitride. Reduction of silica by graphite was found to occur during the equilibration experiments, resulting in compositional changes of the slags. The results were extrapolated to equilibrium by kinetic evaluation of the data. The nitrogen solubility showed good agreement with the result of Suito and Sano, while Fruehan?s results were lower. However, the results of the present study do not support the maximum nitrogen solubility values found by Sano.

"A mechanistic model of axial charge segregation in rotating drums is presented. We show that granular material composed of different frictional properties diffuse into axial bands as a consequence of concentration fluctuations in the free surface layer that is caused by friction-limited mobility. A Bagnoldian stress assumption ensures an asymmetric free surface profile thereby providing the essential ingredients for the evolution of axial bands and the subsequent band coarsening observed in the literature. The formulation is sensitive to the boundary conditions of tumbling mills, including particle size and density, mill speed, inter-particle bulk friction, end wall friction and drum geometry (length and diameter).INTRODUCTIONA mechanism to fully describe the axial segregation of charge in a rotating drum remains elusive to the mineral processing industry. With regard to low aspect ratio mills (like ball mills), current thinking favours the use of closed circuit mills with correspondingly low residence times to offset the completely random contact probabilities between particles and balls (Wills & Napier-Munn, 2006). Conical end caps are argued to exploit the centrifugal force to achieve a regular gradation of ball size along the mill with larger sizes at the feed end and smaller ones closer to the discharge. However; segregation along the length has been observed in the absence of conical end caps (Oyama, 1939; Levine, 1999): In these investigations, sufficient differences in the particle’s mechanical properties (particle size, density, shape, surface roughness) was enough to successfully achieve axial segregation. Figure 1 shows the segregation of a bimodal distribution (by size) into bands of larger (darker colour) and smaller (lighter colour) particles."

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has mandated the use of the AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specifications for all new federally-funded transportation infrastructure projects beginning in October 2007. This includes the design of all geotechnical-related elements, such as deep foundations, which have historically been excluded from the LRFD requirements. The basis of the LRFD specifications is the application of a probabilistically computed parameter called a resistance factor to the foundation capacity in lieu of the traditional, and often arbitrary, factor of safety. Therefore, the process of computing resistance factors for use in the design of deep foundations is extremely critical to ensure a safe, efficient, and consistent design methodology. In this paper, various methods to calibrate resistance factors for use in the design of deep foundations are examined. The methods that are currently utilized to calibrate the resistance factors reported in the AASHTO LRFD specifications may be classified as the allowable stress design (ASD) method and the reliability theory calibration method using static capacity prediction techniques. These methods are compared to a ?t-z? model design methodology. The current methods focus exclusively on the strength limit state design of deep foundations. The advantage of the ?t-z? model methodology is that it can be utilized for both strength and service limit state design. In addition, the results show that resistance factors vary based on geological setting, construction method, failure criteria and deep foundation type. This variability in the resistance factors should therefore be integrated in the design to ensure that the objectives of the LRFD approach are satisfied.

MOST recently elected to the limited group of Honorary Members in the A.I.M.E. is the distinguished Australian metallurgist, Guillaume Daniel Delprat. His citation reads: "in recognition of his distinguished achievement as metallurgist, engineer, and administrator in the production of ferrous and nonferrous metals," Mr. Delprat&apos;s ability and experience in both the ferrous and nonferrous fields at once distinguishes him from most of his professional brothers. Mr. Delprat&apos;s nativity was neither Australian nor English, for he was born in Delft, Holland, in 1856, and educated in Amsterdam. At the age of 22 he went to Spain, as metallurgist for the Tharsis Sulphur and Copper Co., Ltd. Afterwards he spent some time with the Bede Metal and Chemical Co., which had mines in both Spain and Norway, and of which company he became general manager. Other positions of responsibility held by Mr. Delprat before he went to Australia included the managing directorship of the Cordova Exploration Co., with properties in Spain and Canada; of the Rincon Silver-Lead Mining Co., in Spain; and of the Deloro Gold Mines, in Canada.

Heavy metal contamination from mining and metallurgical activities of aquatic systems poses significant risk to the environment and human populations. The investigation of the distribution and immobilization mechanisms of heavy metals in sediments and soils has recently attained high priority. Different remediation methods can be employed to suppress or eliminate these contaminants. A tailored approach using both commercially available and in-house made adsorbents to rem ediate a heavy metal contamination site due to historical metallurgical activities in north Belgium is studied in this paper.

Este estudo apresenta novos resultados que comprovam a confiabilidade e a repetibilidade das medições de cargas de abertura de trincas de fadiga obtidas em estudos anteriores [1,2], que foram usadas para questionar a hipótese proposta por Elber em 1970 de que a força motriz das trincas é a gama efetiva do fator de intensidade de tensões (?Kef). Para isto, dois corpos de prova DC(T), um fino com 2 mm e o outro grosso com 30 mm de espessura, foram usados em ensaios de propagação de trincas por fadiga sob ?K e Kmax quase constantes, para simular condições dominadas por tensão ou deformação plana. Medições redundantes de ?Kef foram feitas usando uma série de extensômetros colados ao longo do ligamento residual à frente da ponta da trinca, por outro extensômetro colado na face traseira do DC(T), e por um sistema independente de correlação digital de imagens (DIC), que mede o campo de deslocamentos na face do espécimem. As cargas de abertura medidas pelos três sistemas independentes foram similares, comprovando assim que suas variações significativas observadas durante o crescimento da trinca são metrologicamente confiáveis. Este resultado comprova que a propagação daquelas trincas por fadiga não foi controlada por ?Kef. As consequências desta conclusão são detalhadamente discutidas neste trabalho.

"Efficiency of blast operations depends on fragmentation, overbreak, muckpile profile anddisplacement, vibration, airblast, flyrock and damage to wall or slope stability. To provide all these conditions at the optimal level, determination of rock mass properties (in-situ block size, joint spacing and orientation) is the very first step during design stage of rock blasting. Image analysis software is used not only to determine the fragmentation level of muckpile but also to characterize the bench face. In this study, an image analysis software was used to determine apparent block size of bench face and to measure blast fragmentation of muckpile. The source of errors and the vital points to be taken into consideration were explained for bench face characterization andfragmentation measurement. Since it provides much better results than previous techniques and it is not intrusive to production process, image analysis technique is considered as one of the most efficient and preferred way for fragmentation analysis. Besides these advantages, there are some weak points of image analysis software. Lighting is one of the most important factors for photographs captured for in-situ block size analysis and fragmentation analysis. Lighting determines shadow formation. In an ideal image, particles are clearly delineated by soft shadows. If shadows are too strong (dark), analysis suffers. Appropriate scale should be replaced onto blast muckpile during site measurements. The location of the scale in image affects the results of analysis. Also, the densityand orientation of discontinuities should be considered during application of image analysis technique to characterize bench faces. In this study, image analysis software was applied in thesandstone, limestone quarries of Istanbul region and an open pit boron mine. All image analysis, evaluations and results were made based on the site measurements."

THE Midvale mill of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company is situated on a flat site whose elevation is 50 ft above that of the Jordan River. Tailings are impounded in the area between the river and the flat upon which the mill and railroad switchyard are located. The water supply is pumped from the Galena canal which leads from the river at a point some ten miles to the south. The mill has a present capacity of approximately 1700 tons daily. It started out originally in 1926 as a 750 ton three-unit plant. The tonnage was gradually increased to 1200 tons by 1934, and in late 1935 a fourth unit was added. The accompanying flowsheet shows the principal equipment and how it is utilized. The ore is principally sulphide with varying degrees of oxidation, with individual lots ranging widely in both precious and base metal content. This article focuses on TurkeyÆs gold potential with respect to exploration, development and operation after 1985. Apart from TurkeyÆs geology, which offers a substantial number of volcanic-associated gold (Ag) and gold-copper (Au-Cu) projects, there are numerous other factors which make the country a favourable place for mining. Turkey has a mining history which goes back to pre-Roman times and an excellent mining code which ensures security for long-term production. In the country, the Government and local villagers are very positive and the country works extremely well logistically with excellent road and telecommunication links. The opportunities for new discoveries in Turkey are very high. Moreover, Turkey has its eyes turned west as it moves towards joining the European Community and it is no surprise that international companies believe it has got its timing as well as its partner relationship right. Newmont, Teck Cominco, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Eldorado Gold, etc all have direct or indirect interests in Turkey, as do an increasing number of midtier and junior exploration companies. Turkish Koza Gold Mining is the first Au producing company of Turkey. The Eldorado Gold owned 245 t Kisladag Au deposit in Western Turkey is currently also producing Au. In the meantime Anatolia Minerals Development is advancing the 131 t resource at the C÷pler Au deposit in North Eastern Turkey. These are significant world-class deposits. Further encouragement for investment in the Au mining sector has been provided by the introduction of a new mining law in 1985. Foreign investments in the country were encouraged and have seen a rapid increase in the last two decades. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth is in excess of five per cent per annum, inflation is down from 70 per cent to single figures, the budget deficit has been cut by 40 per cent to 11 per cent and industrial output and productivity are increasing rapidly. Turkey is politically and economically stable, is a member of the European Customs Union, has a supportive mining legislation, is highly prospective and under-explored and hosts significant recent gold discoveries.

Al ores arriving at the works which contain more than 3% sulphur, together with all sands and other fine residues, are delivered to the roasting department. Those that are in a coarse condition are first sent to the crushing plant, consisting of 15 in. x 9 in. jaw crushers and two No. 5 Krupp mills. The ore is here crushed through a quarter mesh screen. Any pyritic concentrates high in sulphur are given a preliminary roasting, to bring the sulphur contents down to about 12 % and the roasted material is delivered to the H. H. charge-making bins. Here the various ores, sands, residues, roasted pyrites, together with about 12 % of limestone, are made up into I-ton charges in hopper trucks with bottom discharge. The trucks are elevated by hydraulic lifts to a tramway running over the roasting furnaces, and the contents are dropped into hoppers over each furnace, from whence the mixture is fed into the centre of each furnace by means of a Challenge ore-feeder.

A major spontaneous combustion incident occurred in the sealed goaf of the SL3 Panel; Southland Colliery in 2003 resulting in the loss of a longwall and sealing of the mine. The most important issue for the new owners, Yancoal Australia Pty. Ltd, was to effectively manage the atmosphere in the fire affected sealed area. This atmosphere comprised of flammable gases, the products of combustion and excessive levels of oxygen due to pressure differentials across the panel isolation seals with a potential ignition source associated with the residual spontaneous combustion event. The challenges were met in the first instance by the erection of pressure balance chambers with limited success. The problem was not solved until the pressure chambers were pressurized using a Floxal Nitrogen Plant supplied by Air Liquide Australia. Given the success of this approach on a small scale, a higher capacity Air Liquide Floxal Unit was acquired to manage spontaneous combustion at the recommencement of longwall mining operations. This provided the ability to pressurize pressure chambers that were installed in the Maingate Seals behind the face of the adjacent Longwall Block effectively preventing the ingress of oxygen and permitting the goaf to self inert in a reasonable time period. This paper summarizes a new proactive method of mitigating the risks associated with active and sealed goaves. Proactive management of these areas using low flow nitrogen into pressure chambers to maintain a positive pressure has eliminated typical reliance in explosion proof or explosion resistance seals as the primary control.

Publication of the Bureau of Mines annual surveys of the capacity of petroleum refineries in the United States was suspended after the entry of the United States into World War II . The last published survey was that of January 1 , 1941 , released in April 1941 as Information Circular 7161 . The purpose of this publication is to provide comparable information with respect to crude - oil and cracking capacity on January 1 , 1947. No attempt is made at this time to bridge the gap in annual statistical series from the date of the last published survey to the present one . However , complete summary tables will be included in the succeeding survey for January 1 , 1948 .

Wastes from gold mining need to be monitored from the beginning of mining activities until to the mine closure. Wastes from tailings dam were characterized by XRD, XRF, elemental analysis of carbon and sulfur and ICP-OES. In flotation waste (FW) were observed quartz, dolomite, pyrite, muscovite and chamosite were observed. Meanwhile, in cyanidation waste (CW), besides those described in FW, minerals such as sphalerite, galena, pyrrhotite, microcline and albite were detected, indicating a higher concentration of sulfide minerals in the cyanidation waste. In relation to C and S content, to FW and CW, they were 2.5 and 0.0% and 0.64 and 15.4%, respectively, confirming the majority of sulfides at CW sample and indicating the absence of the flotation organic reagents at the cyanidation waste. The analysis by ICP-OES indicated As, Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd content for FW and CW: 13.30 and 343 mg/kg; 399 and 7,900 mg/kg; 136 and 13,000 mg/kg; 130 and 260 mg/kg; 3.60 and 84.60 mg/kg, respectively. It was also verified significant levels of heavy metals, which indicates the necessity of performing wastes toxicity tests.

THE importance of the Widmanstätten structure to structure theory in metallography has been recognized by many writers.1 It is a structure produced by the precipitation of a new phase from a solid solution upon cooling as a result of changing solid solubility, and displays a characteristic appearance indicating a crystallographic relationship between the new phase and the original solid solution (Fig. 1). First discovered in 1808 by Alois de Widmanstätten2, the structure has been traced by analogy through many alloy systems. Particularly is this true of the steels. Sorby&apos;s classic work3 on the microstructure of iron and steel was in essence an attempt to explain the origin of this characteristic structure in meteoric iron. He observed in a Bessemer steel and in a cast-steel ingot structures which we now recognize as typical Widmanstätten figures.4 Osmond5 observed structures in a steel ingot analogous to those found in meteorites. This paper discusses the development of a strategy for ensuring long-term geotechnical stability of final pit walls at AngloGold AustraliaÆs Sunrise Dam Gold Mine. The strategy makes use of improved blasting techniques, changes to the mining sequence and other geotechnical techniques. Only the blasting techniques will be discussed in this paper. These were developed from numerous trials over a period of several months from May 2003 through to November 2003. The focus was to reduce crest loss damage and thereby improve final wall integrity, maintain designed safe berm widths, and ensure long-term stability. Crest loss mechanisms are now understood and are explained in this paper. The preferred solution is outlined; which is a combination of improved blasting and changes in the mining sequence to cater for pre-existing ground conditions. These ground conditions include dynamic hyper saline water with sometimes intersecting steeply dipping discrete structures. Project requirements were defined as mitigating or eliminating crest loss using 127 mm diameter pre-splitting and targeting minimal production blasting vibration levels against the walls. Blast results were measured by post blast visual inspections and video. Blast design input utilised the predictive algorithms built into simulation software when attempting to minimise vibration levels against the walls. Protection of the already fired pre-split line is now achieved using small charges against the wall and timing sequences which form a mask for the later firing main charges. The pre-split spacing is now modified to suit the geology. There eight blast domains identified around the perimeter of the pit, each having varying joint orientation. In addition, blasting the bench adjacent to the berm crest has particular considerations not required by the middle and lower benches. The preferred solution was to purposefully translate this damaged top section of the pre-split bench into a planned subsequent dig zone. The design of this top æweightÆ is a direct response to the nature of the crest loss mechanism.

Deformation is a critical indicator required to evaluate the structural safety, stability, and integrity. For example, the deformed shape of a building structure is a key parameter that needs to be measured and tracked during laboratory testing or post-disaster inspections. However, existing techniques used for the deformation measurement and tracking do not have all the desirable characteristics, such as: reliability, accuracy, low-cost and simplicity of tools installation. In order to address this issue, a novel method has been proposed in this study. The method consists on using the image processing technique to automatically measure and track the deformations of concentrically braced frame (CBF) structures. Accordingly, the critical points in a CBF structure are first identified and the topological configuration of the structure is retrieved. The points and topological configuration characterize the basic shape of the structure. In this way, the deformation of the structure can be determined by measuring and tracking these points and their topological configuration. To show its effectiveness, the proposed method has been tested against the manual deformation measurements.

In the ideal world of an underground mining engineer, all narrow vein orebodies would be perfectly straight and continuous, thus would be a dream to mine. However, this is usually not the case. Narrow vein orebodies generally occur in association with shear zones and while shear zones do form linear trends, they most commonly preserve undulating expressions that need to be closely monitored, particularly when overprinted by post-formed structures. The surge in mines using fibrecrete as a primary form of ground support effectively reduces the time available for geological interpretation down to a 30 minute window between bogging and shotcreting. Thus, if the quality of the data collected is not up to scratch, then there is only a limited ability to reassess using 2D face photographs. To negate this, Xstrata Nickel AustralasiaÆs Cosmos mine has upgraded its data collection procedure. Geological information is now collected using photogrammetry survey, producing 3D images of the drive. Once created, the digital image of the drive is loaded into Vulcan, thus enabling geological interpretation to be carried out along entire drives, between levels and in association with all other data (eg drill holes, seismic data, etc). In addition to this, the 3D image can be used to accurately model the location of the ore, enabling stoping panels to be confidently positioned to maximise grade and minimise dilution. However, with the focus at Cosmos changing from narrow vein mining, to bulk mining methods in a more geotechnically complex terrain, the use of the 3D images has become paramount in understanding the structural geometry. Continual interpretation of the data has enabled drive profiles to be maintained through the increased use of ground support in poor ground and the redesign of development to enable optimal intersection of structures. Nevertheless, while the collection of quality data is important, it is only the effective use of the data, which enables significant gains in understanding.CITATION:Rees, K, 2012.
