It has been suggested that we at the University of Arizona present a paper covering the origin, philosophy, and results of the College of Mines program in the field of computers and operations research. I have worked with the program since its beginning, and I will try to outline the developments as they have taken place. The formal development of the educational and research program in the field of Operations Research and Computer Applications at the College of Mines, University of Arizona, began in early 1957. During the year, the University offered its first formal instruction in computer programming. This was my first introduction to computers, and it did not take long to realize that this new tool had a potential that could be profitably utilized by the mining industry. In March 6f 1957, the University Computing Center began operations with its IBM 650 computer. This machine was the only computer of this size in the local area at this time, The first programming effort was in machine language and the programming cost could only be justified for repetitive-type of problems. The progress in the computer field moved very rapidly and with the development of the many compiler and assembly programs and the addition of sub routines to the computer library, the scope of problems that could profitably be investigated by computers expanded rapidly.

Gekko Systems Pty Ltd engaged in the test work, design, manufacturing and commissioning of the pre-concentration plant at Silver Standard Resources Inc’s Pirquitas mine in the north western Jujuy province of Argentina. Testing of the ore at coarse feeds of between 2 and 12mm returned probable recoveries of up to a total of 95% silver into 50% of the mass fed to the InLine Pressure Jigs (IPJ’s). The plant has been designed and built based on the test results to include a preparation screen to bypass the fines that are naturally higher in grade and repulping of the coarse which is then pumped to three parallel trains of 2-stage IPJ roughing-scavenging. The target 50% yield to concentrate passes over a dewatering screen and the solids are returned back to the mill feed conveyor. The IPJ tails are transferred to a dewatering screen and solid rejects are stockpiled off the end of a transfer conveyor. All dewatered underflow products are processed via hydrocyclones to recover dirty water for use back into the IPJ circuit and return entrained fines to the fines bypass line.With the sulphide orebody being processed, the results from operations to date have shown that plant performance is matching the original laboratory sulphide ore testwork data. The objective of the pre-concentration step is to both reject gangue and achieve grades between 300-400g/t Ag to the float circuit as flotation recoveries are maximised within this range. The plant currently achieves overall upgrades of approximately 150% of feed grade with the IPJ only circuit producing an average 180% increase from calculated feed grade.

The purpose of this investigation was to develop methods, on a laboratory scale, for recovering tin from Bolivian metallurgical slimes. Petrographic and chemical analyses were made of slime ore fractions from several well-known tin operations. High percentages of the total tin were volatilized as chlorides at temperatures below 600° C. Under optimum conditions reaction rates were relatively rapid, and the chloridizing reaction approached completion. Owing to the low temperatures involved and the high yields of tin, the process was considered to have possibilities for treating Bolivian slimes on a commercial basis. Network communication note is a cloud system for an earthwork project. It enables backhoe operators and dump truck drivers to monitor their own works in progress currently and performed up to the present, and to have opportunity to reflect on their own bearings in the earthwork operations, and then could increase their situational awareness to the actual work conditions. First, this paper presents problems and purpose. Secondly, the configuration of the network communication note is reported. Thirdly, examples of communications enhanced by the network communication note are shown. Finally, remarks are described.

In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigations for suitable sources of high-aluminum clay for the production of alumina, the Whiteware clay deposit was examined in August 1942 by G.N. Bennett, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, Montana District Office. This report presents the factual data obtained by the investigation, which also includes data on trenching and drilling, and the results of some refractory tests and chemical analyses of representative samples of the clay later taken from some of the best trench exposures and from adit dumps.

Transportation of sodium cyanide from factory to minesite often attracts adverse comment from both the community and government agencies. In Western Australia the transportation of 30% w/w aqueous sodium cyanide solution raised fears in the community concerning the safety of such material in the event of spillage. The Chemistry Centre of Western Australia initiated a study of the effects of such a spill, to determine appropriate short and long term response strategies. Factors which were considered included the rate of hydrogen cyanide gas release under various climatic and soil conditions and the effect of alternative treatments in reducing such emissions. The data collected have been used to plan emergency response procedures.

The technical feasibility of using energy from explosive ignitions of coal dust to pump water was .demonstrated in an exploratory investigation. Ignition of small amounts of pulverized coal that were dispersed in air over columns of water pumped up to 5.3 gallons of water per cycle when operated against a head of 30.75 feet. Water displacement was accomplished by either manual or automatic operation through a single cycle, and by automatic operation through a continuous series of cycles of I-minute duration. Operating through single cycles, slurries containing up to 3 pounds of coal and 4.6 gallons of water were also pumped. Possible uses of an efficient coal-fired pump would include pumping water for irrigation purposes, removing water from mines, transporting coal from mines in the form of a slurry, and pumping water to elevated reservoirs at electric powerplants so that it could be used to generate electricity during peak periods of demand.

For most of the 20th century optical petrography has been the primary petrological and mineralogical tool used to characterize coal. The development of quantitative SEM-based techniques, e.g. QEMSCAN®, for coal began only about a decade ago. The application of these techniques for coal lagged behind other commodities, but they are currently being developed with the aim to provide ?one complete analysis? for coal. Quantitative SEM-based techniques are supplemented by quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD). Recent indications are that these more modern techniques cannot replace the ?standard? petrographic and chemical evaluations, but rather complement them where and when required. The great advantage of quantitative SEM-based techniques is that they are very rapid, with the result that large volumes of samples can be processed on a routine basis. This is ideal for coal type identification, since the results can be used in the creation of ?intelligent? composites. This can lead to the more speedy evaluation of coal deposits by reducing the number of samples on which detailed metallurgical and characterization test work is required, without an increase in the overall statistical error of the resource model. Coal petrography, however, remains important for the prediction of the coking characteristics of certain coals and coal products. As a consequence it is therefore important that any coal laboratory be able to produce data with confidence. Wiluna Mining Corporation are progressively re-entering the old Wiluna underground mining complex. The existing underground was abandoned in 2013 by previous owners and left to flood with water levels reaching above the East Pit portal and Happy Jack Pit portal and up to 300 m below surface in the Bulletin underground. Re-entering the mine commenced in 2017 with dewatering of the Bulletin decline. The underground development had been previously supported with friction bolts, with weld mesh in places. Until mid-2021 rehabilitation requirements were based on an external visual inspection of the installed ground support scheme. However, several incidents involving falls of ground due to corroded bolts have occurred during this time, showing that this approach was inadequate. The challenge the operation faced was should the entire decline be rehabilitated, the implication being not only a large rehabilitation cost but also the impact of severe delays to the mining schedule. The question was asked can the operation better understand the level of corrosion damage and potentially optimise rehabilitation requirements. A proposal to use a systematic approach to assess corrosion by environmental condition mapping, visual external corrosion assessment, and internal corrosion assessment via borehole camera inspections was provided and accepted by Wiluna Mining Corporation. The objective of this work was to produce a three-dimensional map showing the degree of corrosion on the reinforcement systems in the capital infrastructure, this would then be used to risk assess and prioritise rehabilitation requirements. This paper summarises the approach, methodology and results that provided the Wiluna mine planning team with information to enable planning of resources and budget to justify priorities of rehabilitation.

Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

"The first commercial scale application of CSIRO’s direct solvent extraction (DSX) technology has been in operation at the Boleo project in Mexico since December, 2015. In this application, DSX is a synergistic solvent extraction system consisting of the extractants LIX 63 and Versatic 10 for recovery of cobalt and zinc from a solution background of manganese, magnesium, and calcium. Key operating parameters such as metal extraction, phase disengagement and extractant stability are summarized and discussed in this paper.INTRODUCTION Commissioning of the Boleo processing plant, located on Mexico’s Baja peninsula, began with the copper circuit starting in late 2014, with first copper cathode production achieved in January, 2015. The cobalt and zinc circuits began commissioning in December, 2015 with first zinc sulphate monohydrate (ZSM) and cobalt cathode production achieved in February and April, 2016 respectively. The Boleo project flow sheet and development has been described in detail in previous publications (Dreisinger, et al. 2005; Dreisinger, Baxter, & Molnar, 2006; Dreisinger, et al. 2008; Dreisinger, et al. 2009) and is summarized schematically in Figure 1. Boleo is a mixed oxide/sulphide Cu-Co-Zn-Mn high clay deposit that is processed in a whole ore, atmospheric, oxidative and reductive, sulphuric acid/seawater leach. Copper is recovered as cathode by conventional solvent extraction and electrowinning. Cobalt and zinc are recovered, from a solution background of manganese, magnesium, and calcium, by CSIRO’s synergistic solvent extraction technology Direct Solvent Extraction (DSX). Cobalt and zinc are bulk stripped from the DSX circuit and then further purified by phosphinic acid solvent extraction to produce zinc sulphate monohydrate granules via spray dried granulation and cobalt cathode rounds via divided cell electrowinning."

Carbon dioxide could be utilized as a weak oxidant and a kind of coolant to oxidize elements, meanwhile, helping control the temperature during the converter vanadium extraction process. However, the optimum content of CO2 and the cooling effect of CO2 at low content have not been reported. In this study, experimental research based on the influence of different CO2 contents from 0% to 25% injected to the vanadium-containing hot metal was carried out, as well as contrast experiments of O2-N2 mixed blowing. The results indicated that the optimum content of CO2 was 15%. Under the optimum condition, the oxidation of [C] was the lowest and the oxidation rate of [V] was 96.9%, while the temperature was also lower than the O2-N2 mixed blowing. This paper provide a potential property for utilizing CO2 during the converter vanadium extraction process.

Three anhydrous zinc sulfates have been identified. They are: ZnSO,(a), stable below 1007°K; ZnS04(/3), stable above 1007OK; and ZnO.ZZnSO,. The decomposition pressure of each sulfate has been measured and the following relations calculated from the results: The measured data have been combined with the known themzodynamic properties of ZnS, ZnO, Zn, SO,, and SO, to yield univariant and bivariant phase diagrams for the system Zn-S-0. The application of these diagrams to problems of roasting zinc concentrates is discussed. PRESENT knowledge of the equilibrium chemistry of the system Zn-S:O, so essential to scientific control of zinc-blende roasting, is deficient in several respects. A basic sulfate of zinc has been reported by many investigators, but its composition is in doubt and its thermodynamic properties have not been measured. Our scanty knowledge of the properties of the normal sulfate at roasting temperatures is based on old and inexact studies. A crystal transformation in the normal sulfate, involving a sizable heat effect, has been noted by several investigators but has never been quantified. The studies reported herein were designed to fill these gaps in knowledge and to make possible a reasonably complete thermodynamic description of the system Zn-S-0 at roasting temperatures. The results make possible a far more exact understanding of zinc roasting chemistry than was hitherto possible. EXPERIMENTAL The principal experimental technique employed was the measurement of the total gas pressure developed from decomposition of either ZnSO, or ZnO2ZnS0, in a closed system. The apparatus employed was essentially the same as that described by Warner and lngrahaml and Flengas and tngraham.' The unusual feature is a flexible Pyrex bellows used to separate the reaction gas mixture (S03, SOz, and 02) from the mercury in the manometer and thus prevent corrosion of the mercury by SO3. The bellows operates without evidence of hysteresis and, barring accidents, may be used for several months. The response of the bellows varies from manometer to manometer, but is generally of the order of 0.6-cm displacement for a l-cm change in pressure. The response for all manometers has been linear over the range 0 to 1 atm. To prevent condensation and polymerization of sulfur trioxide, the bellows-manometer was maintained at 100.0" * 0.5" by a circulating bath of silicone oil. The connecting tubing between the manometer and the furnace was maintained at 100.0" * 0.2"* also, with a stirred air bath. The open end of the manometer was connected with a chamber which was maintained at a known pressure. The pressure could be varied so that readings of the height of the mercury column, measured with a cathetometer, could be made with both rising and falling mercury column. By using the average of the readings, any error due to sticking of the mercury column was minimized. The sample was placed in a 2-in.-long platinum boat formed into the shape of a half-cylinder. The sample was prepared as a fine powder and pressed against the inner wall of the platinum boat. A silica thermocouple well, covered with a platinum sleeve, was placed lengthwise along the center of the boat. The temperature of the sample was read on a calibrated Pt-10 pct Rh theirnocouple. The temperature profile of the furnace was constant within ± 0.2 C over the length of furnace occupied by the sample. The horizontal furnace used to contain the sample and the quartz reaction tube was electrically heated, with the control thermocouple placed 1/4 in. from the windings. A Brown Pyro-O-Vane temperature controller with a 3-sec response time was used to maintain the furnace temperature. Y.-The part of Mr. Fiske's paper that interests me especially is that portion dealing with the raw materials, and the tests that were applied to the raw materials in order to determine their value in advance, if possible, because that, I believe, is a step in the right direction. For a number of years I have done my best to persuade different consumers of clay to develop standard methods for testing raw materials. We have in this country a large variety of clays which can be used for a great many different purposes, but in many cases the consumers either have no standard methods for determining the value of those clays in. advance, or if they have they do not publish them; consequently it often puts the clay miner at a disadvantage. If, for example, manufacturers of different types of refractory materials would state publicly just what physical tests their raw materials have to meet, it would, I believe, help them to find more easily the materials that they are looking for, and the clay producer would also be benefited. It would also encourage him to have his clays tested in advance, so that samples could be accompanied by certificates of physical tests that would be of convenience to the manufacturer. At the present time, in this country there are certain types of clay which seem to be rather scarce. There apparently are not many deposits of clay that are exactly suited for the manufacture of zinc refractories. So, too, there are not many deposits of clay that are suited for the manufacture of glass-pots, or the blocks for glass tank furnaces, or clays that can be used for graphite crucibles. Now, in many cases, no standard series of tests has been developed. I am also gratified to see that Mr. Fiske considers the tensile strength. tests of value. Some years ago the American Ceramic Society appointed a committee to draw up a series of recommendations covering standard tests. These recommendations were especially for the use of State geologists and the U., .S. Geological, Survey. Among the tests that were considered was the tensile-strength test, which Mr. Fiske has mentioned in his paper. Unfortunately, a majority of the committee turned it down, and the test was therefore not officially approved, but two of us, who formed the minority, believed in it. Since then the other members of the Committee have come to see that that is an important test to make and Mr. Fiske has emphasized it in his paper.

This paper presents recent research works on the removal of the tramp elements Cu, Sn, Zn and Pb from steel. The evaporation of Cu and Sn in iron-based melts treated at reduced pressure of the gas phase was studied in a vacuum induction melting furnace. The effect of chamber pressure, temperature and melt composition was investigated. Since the main source of contamination of steel with Sn and Zn is the recycling of tinplate and zinc coated steel, respectively, possibilities for the removal of meta1ic coatings in a scrap pre-treatment stage were studied, too. Tin was removed in the temperature range 400-5S0°C by treatment with reactive gases featuring high sulphur potential. Zinc can be removed by evaporation or by a combination of thermal and mechanical treatment. The paper discusses the thermodynamics of Pb in carbon-saturated iron melts, too.

In the mid-1950s the importation of foreign oil began to encroach on traditional coal markets such as railroad steam engine fuel, home heating, electrical generating plants, and others. Many of the smaller coal companies with substantial coal reserves subsequently found that they could no longer continue to mine economically and merged in various ways with larger established coal mining concerns. As the seats of top management and authority were removed from the mines to large metro centers such as New York, Pittsburgh, and Chicago, the more personal relationship between mine workers and management that had existed prior to these mergers began to be eroded and replaced by "remote control" mine management. The disappearance of this face-to-face contact of upper management with mine employees tended to create barriers blocking simple effective communications between coal mine management and labor. In examining the human relations aspects of the coal mining industry, many elements, some concerned with work and others not, have depicted the industry as almost devoid of good applied human relations and communications practices, and, in truth, little has been done to alleviate this situation. In past years many coal producing companies, with the exception of one of the largest, failed to adequately define the term "communications ' as it applied to their companies, whether internally or externally. Internally many still place heavy reliance on written communications such as company-wide newspapers to do the job of communicating with their employees which they feel ought to be done. One company puts an inordinate belief in its company "newspaper" as the primary instrument to stimulate its work force into increasing productivity. Primarily aimed at the workers, who greatly outnumber the salaried administrative people, this publication mainly documents the fortunes of individual mine workers who are felt to have achieved something with their lives, e.g., a mine worker who had managed to put four children through universities, the

A dynamic agglomeration, heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning software, called NICO, has been developed in order to either design or simulate copper ore recovery plants. NICO contains a library of routines, each representing a unit operation or piece of equipment, which are assembled like a meccano to match almost any wet plant configuration. Routines include agglomeration or curing either in drums or belts, belt conveyors, heap stacking and reclaiming, heap leaching of oxide, sulfide or mixed copper ores, heap irrigation, drainage, ponds, mixer-settlers, filters, columns, coalescers, tanks, electrowinning cells, pumps, and all connections and related piping. All models are semi- phenomenological, i.e., they include all physical-chemical, mass, thermal, transport equations, which are required to represent as closely as possible the equipment or unit operation. However, operating experience has been incorporated into the model in order to make it simpler, faster and reliable. This experience has been tested in several plants in Chile since 1992. Site meteorological data is simulated also; in this way the model is responsive to weather conditions (temperature, solar radiation, ambient humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind velocity, etc). NICO has been used recently for design and optimization studies in copper plants in Chile like Radomiro Tomic, Collahuasi and Zaldivar. A user-friendly interface allows fast and comprehensive simulations. The entire plant is shown in a single graphic screen, so the user can see all the relevant information, and soft-keys are provided in order to change parameters on-line and watch their effect in final copper production in cathodes. Model also calculates and reports operating parameters, as well as estimated investments and operating costs.

The engineering profession generally does not accept vibro-driven piles as bearing piles unless their capacities can be verified by restriking with an impact hammer, which significantly reduces the economic benefits of vibratory driving. In part, the concern for capacity development in piles driven by vibration arises out of observations that vibro-driven piles do not develop capacities equivalent to those driven by impact (e. g., Mosher, 1987). Nonetheless, if capacities are predictable, vibratory installation may be more cost effective than installation by impact, due to savings in time of installation, even if capacities are lower than those of impact-driven piles. Throughout the past few decades, a number of attempts have been made to develop capacity prediction methods for vibro-driven piles, mostly along the same lines as methods for impact-driven piles. That is, (1) totally empirical formulae, (2) power balance / power transfer formulae, and (3) "time domain-nonlinear" (TDN) computational procedures such as the wave equation. Some of the formulae have been based partly on field experience, but the majority have been developed from simple theoretical models with parameters evaluated from laboratory studies. The Colowyo mine is a unique surface coal mining operation because it is a multiple seam pit. Using a combination of a shovel-truck and dragline operation, Colowyo mines 8 seams of coal to a depth of 400 ft. Over the past 3 years a number of operational changes have occurred, one of which is the implementation of blast casting. Through this implementation Colowyo has been able to eliminate over one million cubic yards a year, which would have had to be removed by the shovel-truck operation. This has also brought about a significant decrease in the stripping cost per ton within the dragline operation.
