It is obviously not possible in the time given me today to review in great detail all the research of the past 20 years that the (FHWA) has sponsored or participated in. In this presentation I will highlight some of the principal programs that I am familiar with. This handout lists practically all the reports prepared for the FHWA involving deep foundations and some related work involving the same structural elements (piles, shafts, ground anchors).

By plotting fixed carbon against British thermal units of coals free from mineral matter, and ranging in rank from anthracite to lignite, it is found that the coals of higher rank, from anthracite to the higher rank of the high-volatile bituminous coals, inclusive, can be separated into groups according to their degree of metamorphism by reference to their fixed carbon. Such charts show also that the coals lower in rank can be best separated into groups with respect to B.t.u., especially when plotted on the moist basis, that is, coal containing its natural bed moisture. A tentative scheme for coal classification was presented at the October, 1932, meeting of the Technical Committee on Scientific Classification, of the American Standards Association Sectional Committee on Coal Classification. This scheme was sponsored by Subcommittee IV on Tentative Classification of Coals, under the chairmanship of W. T. Thom, Jr. It proposed the grouping of coals according to rank by reference to fixed carbon and B.t.u., on the basis of coal containing its natural bed moisture but free from mineral matter. This scheme proposed classifying coals into four broad classes: (1) anthracitic, (2) bituminous, (3) subbituminous, (4) lignitic. The anthracitic class was divided into three groups designated as meta-anthracite, normal anthracite, and semianthracite. The bituminous class also was divided into three groups, low volatile, medium volatile, and high volatile. The high-volatile group was further subdivided into four subgroups according to moisture content, as fo1lows: (1) less than 5 per cent, (2) 5 to 10 per cent, (3) 10 to 15 per cent, and (4) 15 per cent and more. The subbituminous class was divided into two groups, group 1 including subbituminous coals having calorific values of 10,500 B.t.u. or more, and group 2 including those with less than 10,500 B.t.u. Based on full investigation of the characteristic of sphalerite in the residue obtained from cyanidation leaching process and the study of the mechanism of the interaction between flotation reagents and sphalerite with the aid of electrochemical analysis, the reagent named YO was developed for eliminating the depression effect of CN- on sphalerite and reducing the dosage of CuSO4. The achievements have been used in commercial production for the treatment of the cyanidation residue to recover the zinc minerals, obtaining a zinc concentrate with grade of 56.49% Zn and recovery of 86.63% Zn.

The purposes of this Bureau of Mines report are to review the history of the domestic offshore hydrocarbon production; to project offshore oil and lease condensate production from 1971 through 1985; and to show the impact of offshore development on the onshore segment of the petroleum industry. Since 1954, offshore production has provided an increasingly larger portion of the domestic oil production. Domestic offshore oil and lease condensate production has increased from about 2.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 16.7 pct in 1970. Likewise, marketed gas production has increased from 1.0 pct of the U.S. total in 1954 to 15.0 pct in 1970. The past performance of exploration, leasing, development, and production of the offshore petroleum industry was used to make projections of offshore oil production. A comparison between onshore and offshore operations was also made. Assuming a tentative Department of the Interior offshore leasing schedule is completed by 1980, the authors estimate that by 1985, about 30 pct of domestic crude oil and lease condensate production from the lower 48 States will come from offshore areas. Currently, leasing of Federal offshore areas has been delayed due to environmental considerations. The rate at which off-shore hydrocarbons will enter the energy market will depend, to a large extent, on how soon environmental considerations are resolved. Assuming that offshore leasing will resume in the near future, U.S. offshore production of crude oil and lease condensate should be about 934 million barrels in 1985.

This paper presents a method of predicting the recovery and performance of a five-spot steam injection project, in which a realistic approach to pattern sweepout efficiencies is made. Published methods for radial systems were modified for the five-spot pattern by approximating the stream lines with straight lines radiating from the injection well and then converging to the producing well. In each radial segment, the position of the steam front and the temperature profile ahead of the steam front were determined by heat balance equations, which included an estimation of heat losses to surrounding formations. The location of the saturations behind the cold water front was determined from a Buckley-Leverett solution to the material balance equation. Results from this program show steamflood recovery in a five-spot pattern to be considerably less than that predicted for true linear or radial flow systems. For a specific reservoir containing 900-cp oil, a steamflood in a purely radial flow system was predicted to recover more than 75 percent of the original oil in place when 2 PV of water had been injected as steam. A five-spot steamflood with otherwise identical properties was predicted to recover 10 percent of the original oil in place when 0.15 PV of water had been injected as steam and to recover almost no oil thereafter. A cold water five-spot flood in this system was predicted to recover approximately W percent of the oil in place with I PV of water injected. For a five-spot pattern in an example reservoir with 10-cp oil, steam injection similarly showed lower ultimate recovery than water injection but no improvement in recovery rule. Introduction The thermal recovery method considered in this study is steam injection in a five-spot pattern. Pattern steam injection has been given little attention in the past, possibly because of some rather obvious disadvantages. Unless steam temperature is maintained throughout the entire swept area, the process will revert to simple waterflood with all heat being lost prior to reaching the oil bank. Also, the oil viscosity reduction takes place near the steam front and not around the producing wellbore, so that low producing rates must still be endured. This is the reason for the success of the steam stimulation, or cyclic injection, in which the fluids are produced from the same well used for injection. On the other hand, steamflooding can offer some advantages. Oil displacement is by four methods: (1) mechanical displacement by the condensed water, (2) viscosity reduction of the crude oil, (3) swelling of the crude oil, and (4) distillation of the crude oil in the steam zone. Although dependent upon the crude, laboratory experiments have shown displacements up to 80 percent by steamflooding. In addition, steam is a good heat transport medium, since it is cheap and has a high heat content. Previous Investigations Previous publications have reported methods for predicting recovery in a steamflood for linear and radial systems. Since no pattern sweep efficiency is taken into consideration, the recovery even from a radial system must be greater than from more realistic geometries such as the very common five-spot patterns. Probably the broadest coverage is given by Willman who reported experimental results and offered a method of predicting recovery for a radial flow system. They concluded that both hot water and steam injection recover more oil than an ordinary waterflood, and that steam injection could yield recoveries "as much as 100 percent greater than by water flood." They also concluded that both the heat requirements for a reservoir and the residual oil remaining in the reservoir after steam injection were independent of the amount of oil originally in place, that short exploitation times were desirable, and that a high percentage of net sand in the reservoir with a high initial oil saturation was desirable. The method assumes that the flood occurs in three concentric cylindrical zones: (1) an inner steam zone, (2) a central hot water zone, and (3) an outer cold waterflood zone. Displacement in the steam zone is based on laboratory-determined residual oil saturations while the hot water and cold water zones use the conventional Buckley-Leverett equations. DURING the latter part of the year 1931, the Republic mine of the Republic Steel Corporation, at Republic, about 4 miles south of Browns-ville, Pa., was mining coal along four rib or fracture lines. One of these lines, the west butt rib line, was retreating towards a concrete-lined air shaft, 320 ft. deep, which had been sunk in 1911 for ventilation purposes. With the normal rate of mining at that time, it was expected that this rib line would pass the shaft in three or four months and the shaft would then be abandoned and allowed to cave. Realizing the opportunity presented for the study of an unusual case of ground movement, the question of conducting the study was presented by the junior author to the chairman of the Institute's committee on Ground Movement and Subsidence, Mr. George S. Rice, who presented the matter to Mr. G. H. Morse, General Manager of the Northern Mines, Republic Steel Corpora-tion, and he agreed to cooperate with the Bureau of Mines in making the study, the results of which are presented in this paper. Acknowledg-ments are due to Mr. Morse for his full cooperation in this work and to Mr. G. S. Rice and Mr. J. W. Paul, both of the U. S. WITH more than a score of shafts and numerous stope openings to the surface, all inter-connected underground; with underground temperatures high, often exceeding 100° wet bulb; with an ore presenting a dust health-hazard; with certain rocks giving off inert gases; with an altitude of 6000 ft. above the sea level and a dry desert climate, the Tonopah mines offered an interesting, problem to the student of metal-mine ventilation. Tonopah is not an old mining district relatively speaking. It was discovered in 1900 and Tonopah soon was a boom camp. By 1910 the mines of this district had paid many millions of dollars in dividends. At the time of the 1921 ventilation study, mining had passed its peak of production and the operators were striving to reduce costs, to discover new ore bodies, and to attract desirable workmen. In 1925, the camp was operating on a still less prosperous basis, but the several managements had not relaxed in their efforts to keep the mines on a paying basis, neither had they lost their faith in the ability of the mines and the price of the silver to "come back." Early in the fall of 1921 the Bureau of Mines was invited by the mine operators at Tonopah, Nevada, to make a detailed study of the under-ground air conditions in the Tonopah silver district. D. Harrington,? who was then directly supervising the ventilation studies of the bureau, detailed district engineer B. 0. Pickard, mining engineer E. D. Gardner, surgeon C. E. Kindall, and petrographer H. Insley to carry on the study. G. S. Rice, as chief mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines, was in general charge of the work. Upon the completion of the study each operator was furnished a report on conditions in his mine.

Had the blank on the Abstract form been sufficiently spacious a more appropriate title for this paper would be: Neogene Tectonism, Magmatic Activity and Hydrothermal Precious Metal Mineralization in Anatolian Turkey; an Analog with the Basin and Range Province of the Western U.S.? Like the alternative title no thing in Turkey is simple. Its history is long and convolute; its culture fascinating; its metallogeny diverse and its geology very complex. This paper will focus only on the geology of western' Anatolia and the precious metal potential of this third of Turkey. The argument is in the article but to save the reader time and suspense I'll put my conclusions up front- the potential is great and the possibilities exciting.

"In the continuous casting of aluminum killed steel, the tundish nozzle often experiences clogging problems. Water model studies have shown that the clogging problem is dependent on the flow pattern in the nozzle entry region. In particular, the flow can separate at the entrance to the nozzle, leading to the development of a recirculation region. Although a nozzle can be designed such that no recirculation develops, even a small misalignment from the vertical positioning of the nozzle may render the design ineffective.To reduce the possibility of nozzle clogging, the recirculation zone must be reduced or eliminated. This may be achieved by moving the fluid downwards or raising the turbulence level in the separation region. In the case of a tundish nozzle, it is proposed that this can be achieved by using electromagnetic forces.To generate the required electromagnetic force, two systems are considered. The first is based on injecting a DC current; the second by using electromagnetic induction. Both methods are described in this paper. Order of magnitude calculations are provided to illustrate that both methods are essentially feasible. The performance of each method in terms of modifying the turbulent flow characteristics in the nozzle entry region is then examined using a numerical model. It is shown that both methods can greatly reduce the recirculation zone. A cylindrical nozzle was chosen for the model studies since it represents a worst case situation.On the basis of the model studies, it can be concluded that whereas both of the proposed methods have the potential to reduce the troublesome recirculation zone, the induction method appears to be simpler in terms of practical implementation."

"In-situ observation of unidirectional solidification using transparent substance has been performed to investigate the growth direction of solid phase. Cell or dendrite of which preferred growth direction is not parallel to the heat flow direction was observed with various solidification conditions. Dimensionless growth direction (p) changes from 0 to 1 with increasing growth velocity at a constant temperature gradient. Introducing the dimensionless growth velocity, the relation between p and growth condition could be correlated.IntroductionTransition in macroscopic solidified structure from chill to columnar zone which is found in normal castings takes place via grain selection1). Cast products such as turbine blades are unidirectionally solidified, grain selection plays an important role to choose suitable crystals which have reasonable orientation in the region called ""starter"", which is a very initial part of casting2). Therefore, grain selection is a very important process in the formation of casting structure. The present authors have been studying on the process of grain selection using succinonitrile, which is a transparent organic substance and have found that the growth distance necessary for grain selection depends upon the solidification condition3-5). When the solid/liquid interface is dendritic, the grain selection occurs quickly. On the other hand, when the solid/liquid interface is cellular, it occurs slowly. We supposed that the growth direction of dendrite is different from that of cell when the substance is unidirectionally solidified. Indeed, Kurz and Fisher wrote in their text book that dendrite grows along its preferred growth direction, <100>, regardless of heat flow direction and that cell grows along heat flow direction regardless of its preferred growth direction1). However, there is no quantitative description about the growth direction when the solid/liquid interfacial morphology is cellular. Furthermore, there have been little works6) to study the growth direction of cell and dendrite."

DURING the last ten years, in the effort to save manpower and costs, methods of drilling and blasting in Sweden have changed and developed in a revolutionary manner. These developments have been accompanied by extensive alterations in methods of tunneling and in mining technique. Since the end of the 1940&apos;s there has been a 100 pct change-over in Sweden to the use of tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Both investigations and practical results have shown clearly that a tungsten carbide chisel bit fastened directly on the drill steel is the most economical for Swedish conditions. This applies to drill steel up to the longest size it is practical to handle. In terms of drilling footage, durability of the drill steel and the tungsten carbide bit is generally the same. In this respect, therefore, a detachable bit offers no advantage over integral steel. Transportation of integral steel to the grinding plant, instead of detachable bits only, involves heavier work, but this is counteracted by placing grinding plants closer together or by grinding at the working place itself. The drilling rate with integral steel is higher, the trouble of changing bits is avoided, and the difficulties which always arise with joints are eliminated. At present steel dimensions are usually 7/8 in. with a shank 41/4 in. long, whereas the international standard shank was formerly 31/4 in. The longer shank renders possible a better guide control of the steel and consequently longer life for the rotation chuck and the water-flushing pipe. After extensive experiments and investigations, agreement has been reached in Sweden on certain series of standards, shown in Table I. Other steel dimensions are, of course, available for special purposes. The standard drill-steel set begins with a 34-mm diam and has a length interval of 2 2/3 ft. On the other hand, for ordinary drifting it has been proved more economical to use greater length intervals on the steel, so only one steel change is required for a 61/2-ft round. Moreover, owing to the relatively close hole spacing necessary in a drift round, it has been possible to reduce the diameters of the tungsten carbide bits. This results in faster and cheaper drilling. As shown by the table, the lengths of drill steels for normal drifting are 33/4 ft and 71/2 ft, with 29 and 28-mm diam bits. During the last few years operators have begun to use 3/4-in. drill steel in place of the 7/8-in. drill steel chiefly employed earlier. "This summary of international mineral exploration activities during 2017 draws upon information from industry sources, published literature, SNL Metals & Mining (SNL), an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY) and specialists in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center. Three types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration: 1) budgetary statistics expressed in U.S. dollars provided by SNL; 2) regional and site-specific exploration activities that took place in 2017 as compiled by the USGS and 3) regional events and legislation that affected exploration activities including economic, social and political conditions, which were derived from published sources and discussions with USGS and industry specialists. Commodity and regional compilations are presented in this summary. Because multiple sources were used to develop commodity and regional compilations, statistics may vary depending on the source and type of data that are being reported.The SNL data summarize budget estimates for worldwide exploration activities in 2017 for 30 nonfuel mineral commodities and metal alloys, based on company surveys. Surveys focused on precious metals (gold, platinumgroup metals (PGMs) and silver), base metals (cobalt, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, tin and zinc), bulk commodities (bauxite, chromite, iron ore, manganese, phosphate and potash), and other commodities (aluminum, antimony, diamond, graphite, heavy-mineral sands, lithium, niobium, rare-earth elements (REEs), scandium, tantalum, tungsten, uranium, vanadium and yttrium). Information on uranium exploration activities was included in SNL’s survey for the first time in 2007. Data on lithium, niobium, phosphate, potash, REE and tungsten were compiled for the first time in 2010, and scandium, vanadium and yttrium were added in 2014 because of their increased topical significance. Since 1999, companies with exploration budgets of $100,000 and greater were included in the SNL surveys. SNL budget estimates exclude coal, and oil and gas. The 2017 SNL mining company survey compilation was reported by SNL to include an estimated 95 percent of the world’s nonfuel mineral exploration budgets. The 5 percent that was not covered was accounted for by companies that chose not to participate in the SNL survey, private companies that do not publish their budget data, and government-funded exploration activities."

The main value of earth magnetic measurements, outside of certain mining problems, resides in the study of deeply buried tectonic phenomena related to regional and local geology. Magnetic surveys are a necessary complement of gravimetric measurements, especially of pendulum surveys. To date, magnetometer prospecting has been used chiefly in the study of sedimentary basins where petroleum structures are associated with the uplifted basement rocks. There are, in the literature, innumerable articles dealing with such surveys as applied to oil geology but few treat of broad geological features related to regional magnetic disturbances of the earth field. An important piece of coordination work has been made by Jean Jungl for the magnetic and gravimetric measurements made in France and their geologic significance. A similar attempt at correlation of the known geology with the anomalies of the vertical component of the earth magnetic field has been made for the United States by George B. Somers2. Taking the magnetic vector as a whole, W. P. Jenny3 made a coordination of magnetism and geology for the main producing oil states of the United States. A more detailed study along the same lines is published by A. Van Weelden4 for southern Oklahoma and northern Texas; in this work magnetic and gravimetric measurements taken at stations as close as one mile apart are compiled and compared to the regional geology of the Ouachita-Amarillo uplifted area. From the literature mentioned, it is evident that reliable interpretation of magnetic&apos; anomalies can be arrived at only when the magnetic stations are numerous and cover the area in a close net of measurements, therefore the works of Somers and Jenny, based on sparsely distributed Government measurements, can be regarded only as preliminary programs indicating lines along which further work should be done, whereas the coordination made by Van Weelden is an example of the contribution to the knowledge of regional geology that can be arrived at by the use of applied geophysics. This technical work was carried out in an open pit copper mining unit, located in central Peru, which has a daily production of 440 thousand tons per day. Currently the pit consists of three mining phases, however, in phase 05 north, there is the construction of a shaft with a height of 375 meters, the function of this structure is to collect and drain the water coming from the pit, there is the importance of preserving its stability and keeping it operational, guaranteeing the sustainability of the operation. For this, a controlled blasting plan was developed that goes from level 4530 to level 4455 to place the central well on a bench, reactivating the pools.

The Cuyuna manganiferous iron ores can be a principal source of manganese for the iron and steel industry in the United States, provided metallurgical methods as a whole are adjusted so as to use run-of-mine ore. The use of manganese in steelmaking is growing. Increasing amounts of impurities in raw materials call for more manganese, a constant cheap supply of which is wanted. There are few deposits of ore in the United States carrying over 35 per cent. manganese that can be mined and marketed at a profit in normal times. We are largely dependent on foreign ores. The small domestic deposits should rightly be held in reserve for an emergency, such as a war, when importation might cease. Even the production from lean ores, concentrated it may be, might not carry us through a protracted stringency. The Cuyuna district is, therefore, during normal times capable of supplying a large total of manganese. The ores are iron ores containing 5 to 25 per cent. of manganese with the inverse range of 52 to 28 per cent, of iron. The manganese costs no more per unit in the ore than the iron, because cost of mining, largely by open-pit methods, is not affected by the manganese content. The manganese units should, perhaps, command a higher price, but as their value is contingent on metallurgical practice, a higher price may be justified only when a shortage in manganese occurs. Manganiferous iron ores can never entirely supplant straight manganese ores though methods are employed that will permit them to do so partly. For the manufacture of ferromanganese, ores carrying above 42 per cent. manganese are needed. Ores with manganese running between 20 and 42 per cent. are used for making spiegeleisen. But established practice in certain plants, based on the admixture of manganiferous iron ores to straight iron ores has greatly lessened the consumption of high-priced, scarce, manganese alloys with good results. El presente estudio revisa la fisiografía, geología, tipos de metamorfismo, efectos de intemperismo y trabajos de exploración en las minas de Marcona. La zona minera de Marcona está ubicada a 800 m.s.n.m del sur de Lima, Ica, cuyo terreno está comprendido por una plataforma costera, donde la erosión no solo ha producido afloramientos de rocas resistentes, sino también de cuerpos de mineral. Su geología está compuesta de rocas que se subdividen en sedimentarias, volcánicas, ígneas y metamórficas. Asimismo está el granito de San Nicolás, andesita porfirítica, granodiorita y los intrusivos básicos. Su estratigrafía se desarrolla por el aluvión, la formación Pisco, Copara, los volcánicos Nazca, formación Cerritos, Marcona, Complejo Lomas. Entre los efectos del intemperismo está la zona de lixiviación, zona superior de sulfatos, zona inferior de sulfatos y la zona de sulfatos primarios. Finalmente, los trabajos de exploración se realizan a través de los levantamientos magnetométricos (prospección), perforaciones a percusión seca, sondajes diamantinos y las labores subterráneas.

Most mineral deposits change as they are followed downward on their dips. Some of these changes are due to primary arrangement; different ores were precipitated at different depths when the deposits were formed. Other changes are due to weathering or secondary enrichment. The chief changes resulting from weathering, in the main, are understood and standard changes are recognized. The processes are relatively simple. They take place at ordinary temperatures and pressures and can be duplicated in the laboratories. Moreover, there are thousands of deposits available for study, because the processes take place near the surface where the development of mines is begun. The changes due to primary arrangement of the deposits of the metals are not so well understood. Deposition has taken place at higher temperatures and our knowledge of the chemistry of the processes leaves much to he desired. Very few experimental data are available. The deposits, moreover, offer fewer examples because many mines are not developed to depths where the changes can be studied and a change to unprofitable material usually results in stopping work. Most students of ore deposits now accept, as confirmed, the hypothesis that nearly all lodes and related deposits were formed by solutions originating in intrusive igneous masses. Outward from these masses, the deposits at many places are grouped in zones and the arrangement noted from the intrusions outward are commonly the reverse of the changes noted from the surface downward in a single lode. A study of the changes in groups of deposits, from the parent intrusion outward, will throw light on the changes to be expected in a single lode downward. Recause the changes in series of deposits from the intrusive outward may all be observed near the surface, where more data are available, it is possible to increase the number of examples many fold and to apply the statisttical method of study with greater confidence of avoiding error. It is not everywhere possible to identify the parent igneous body to which a group of ore deposits are related. Several kinds of criteria are available; certain groups are superior to others. Oversize boulders in mines and quarries must be broken for waste disposal or further processing of ore. Early methods involved drilling and "shooting" or using a drop ball of sufficient weight to accomplish the purpose. The first "high-energy" hammers for breaking concrete or boulders were pneumatically operated. Blow energy was limited by valving and air pressure. However, smaller boulders of lower compressive strength could be broken. A hydraulic excavator-backhoe type machine was required for either a drop ball or hammer. Standard practice was to break oversize boulders in the pit before hauling to the grizzly or crusher. Generally, quarry boulders were not valuable enough for further processing. Quarry roads were lined with oversize boulders. As safety requirements were advanced, "drill and blast" for boulders was ruled out.
