Safe underground mine backfilling with hydraulic fill requires efficient fill drainage and stable fill retaining walls or bulkheads. If any or both the above two requirements are not satisfied, such a backfilling operation creates unsafe conditions and may lead to backfill retaining wall failures. Mine backfill retaining wall failures are always associated with economic losses, fatalities and interruption to mine production. Mining industry wants to either reduce or eliminate these fill retaining wall failures. The fill retaining wall failures could be effectively avoided through the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete fill retaining walls and engineered drainage systems through the retaining walls. This paper presents the experience of the author in developing, implementing, and monitoring several hundred fibre reinforced shotcrete fill retaining walls at a mine in Australia with the highest safety standard. The details on the mine backfill drainage system and fibre reinforced shotcrete fill retaining wall designs are also presented.

THE usual reverberatory system of smelting cop--1- per concentrate or calcine has for its component parts a furnace and one or two waste heat boilers. These parts are operated on a basis of compromise, since the furnace can send gas to the boilers at too high a temperature and the boilers by plugging, due to dust or slag, can place a definite limit on the amount of fuel the furnace can burn. Over the years the copper concentrate smelting furnace has had few advances in design. The simple rules of design such as the flame should wipe the bath and the speed of the gases should be reasonably low for dust carrying purposes seem to cover the main features. In the construction of the individual furnaces some innovations are always being introduced. Among these are charging so that the work of smelting is a complete bath process, the use of suspended brick arches in place of sprung arches, the use of basic brick, not only in the crucible, but also in roof and sidewalls, the use of various means to feed the charge, the use of magnetite or other heavy material to construct the hearth, water cooling of bridgewall and slag skimming bay, the smelting of raw charge instead of calcine, the use of preheated air, and possibly the use of oxygen-enriched air for combustion. But the general outlines of the furnaces have not changed much except as to size. Furnaces at Hurley As shown on Fig. 1, the furnace at Hurley is 126 ft long between the longitudinal buckstays and 32 ft wide at the skewback plates. The foundation is a concrete retaining wall with piers at intervals that go deeper into the earth. Purposely the wall at the burner end of the furnace is not backed-up as tightly as the other parts of the foundation so that movement due to expansion may take place here rather than into the boiler foundations. Within these foundation retaining walls of concrete, the earth has been removed to allow the placement of the crucible brick base inside of which a silica hearth is laid 4 ft 6 in. in depth. No expansion is left in the brick base and crucible where they are in contact with the hearth. The hearth itself is of quartzite crushed to 1 in. size with fines left in the product. An 8 in. layer is laid and tamped with paving tampers to about 6 in. in thickness. Then a layer of silica flour is spread and vibrated into the hearth. This operation is repeated until a depth of 4 ft 6 in. is occupied by the silica mass onion-skinned in layers of approximately 6 in. Before firing the entire hearth is covered with broken slag to a depth of 4 in. so that a seal may be formed on the hearth. The crucible is completely faced with magnesite chemically bonded brick while the outside, against the foundation, is made of silica brick. The side-walls are carried up with silica brick in which expansion joints are left at intervals. Above the crucible the sidewall is corbelled to form a shelf on which the charge may build up along the side-walls, see Fig. 2. The arch of the furnace is sprung 20 in. silica brick, with the longitudinal centerline horizontal the length of the furnace, and some 9 ft in the center above the bath. Both straight and wedge brick are used in the construction and a thin silica mortar is troweled for joints. After the arch under heat has assumed its permanent shape, a silica slurry is spread over the arch to fill any cracks that have formed, thus giving bearing surface to the brick and preventing dust from entering the body of the arch to act as a future fluxing agent. The uptake of the furnace slopes up to the boiler entrance where a brick pilaster divides the gas stream for the two boilers. Over this flared uptake is a suspended flat arch of firebrick. The pilaster and sidewalls are constructed of firebrick but the bottom of the uptake is lined with silica brick and fettled through holes in the roof with siliceous fettling. Close to the entrance of each boiler is a brick covered slot through which water-cooled dampers may be lowered in event of boiler trouble. These water-cooled dampers are hung permanently in position ready to be lowered when needed. Flexible hoses to follow the dampers as they are lowered are connected at all times and individual chain blocks are used to lower the dampers. A pump supplying water is started before the dampers enter the heat. Charging of the furnace along the sidewalls for some 80 ft from the bridgewall is accomplished by electric vibrating conveyors fed by belt from charge storage bins above the furnace. These conveyors

The mine of the Miami Copper Co. is in the Miami district, Gila County, Ariz., approximately 7 miles west of Globe. In 1906, the General Development Co. secured the ground now owned by the Miami Copper Co., and about a year later discovered ore in a prospect shaft at a depth of 220 ft. The Miami Copper Co. was organized in 1907, the claims held by the General Development Co. were transferred to it, and an active development campaign was inaugurated. The railroad was extended from Globe to Miami in 1909, a concentrating plant was constructed, and the company began producing early in 1911. The unit size of mineral tract in the district is the standard lode claim 600 ft. in width by 1500 ft. in length. Ownerships of land are held in fee. The geology of the district has been described by F. L. Ransome.' The formations of local importance are: The pre-Cambrian Pinal schist, which consists mainly of metamorphosed sedimentary rocks and is commonly of a thinly laminated sericitic variety; the diabase, which is thought to have been intruded in late Paleozoic or early Mesozoic times; the Schultze granite and granite porphyry, considered early Tertiary; the dacite of late Tertiary time; and the Gila conglomerate of early Quaternary. General Items Influencing Mining Methods The bodies of disseminated ore in the district are flat lying masses of irregular outline and variable thickness. As a rule, these masses lack definite boundaries; the orebody follows a curve along one of the main ridges, approximately 5500 ft. in length with a maximum width of 1600 ft. The minerals occur as finely divided and uniformly disseminated chal-cocite in the Pinal schist and Schultze granite. The typical overburden or capping is a barren rusty brown, very friable, highly siliceous, leached schist, or granite-porphyry. The topography of the district is fairly rugged and irregular; the altitude ranges from 3400 ft. above sea level, at the town of Miami, to 3900 ft. on the hills above the Miami orebody. The climate is mild; the mean annual temperature is 63.°F.

Experimental animal studies comparing asbestos and non-asbestos varieties of tremolite indicate tremolite asbestos is markedly more carcinogenic. By direct analogy, the differences in carcinogenicity between tremolite asbestos and non-asbestos prismatic tremolite should be the same for the other types of amphibole that also crystallize in the asbestos and non-asbestos habits. The earliest of the experiment animal studies, done more than 25 years ago, have design limitations by modern standards including the use of injection or surgical implantation as the route of administration rather than the more relevant route of inhalation. However, the differences in the carcinogenicity of amphibole asbestos and non-asbestos amphiboles are sufficiently large to be clearly discernable even with the study limitations. Together with later studies on these and related minerals, there is strong evidence of a much lower hazard associated with the shorter, thicker fibers of the non-asbestos amphiboles, than is found for the asbestos analogues of the same mineral. It is possible that the non-asbestos amphiboles are no more hazardous than other silicate minerals widely considered nuisance dusts. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. "The study of combined depressants for flotation separation of lead from copper has been carried out to solve the copper-lead separation problem. Test results show that the depressant of CMC (Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose) or sodium sulfite plays an important role on the selective depression of galena flotation. When the two reagents above are combined, the selective depression effect on galena is further enhanced. When the mass ratio of CMC to sodium sulfite is 1:4, galena was best depressed, with the lowest lead content in the copper concentrateClosed-circuit tests indicate that under a certain pH value of the slurry, with the best ratio of CMC to sodium sulfite as depressants, the copper concentrate with the grade of 28.23% copper and 4.12% lead is obtained, and the copper recovery is 84.87%; the lead concentrate with 68.12% lead and 0.86% copper is obtained, and the lead recovery reaches to 92.20%. An efficient separation of copper and lead is achieved with the combined depressants. INTRODUCTIONComplex copper-lead-zinc sulfide ore is abundant in China. With the rapid increase of mineral consumption, it has become one of the important sources to produce copper-lead-zinc metals. However, it is difficult to achieve effective separation of copper and lead, due to the complicated ore properties, such as fine dissemination, low copper grade, complex symbiotic relationship and similar floatability of copper and lead.Poisonous reagents of bichromate and cyanide are often used as depressants for copper lead separation. They have good separation efficiency, but pose serious pollution issues. As the environmental protection is becoming more and more important, it is a trend to replace traditional toxic reagents with new nontoxic efficient chemicals. Organic depressant FCLS studied by Liu has strong selectivity against galena, and does not depress chalcopyrite. A new type of galena depressant of CLS-01 discovered by Jin-lin Yang shows good results in the separation a mixed copper and lead concentrate. In addition, dextrin, chitosan and some other natural organic compounds (Drzymala, 2003; Huang, 2012; Qin, 2013) have also been studied to separate copper and lead."

There was an extensive mining and industrial exploitation of Russia, about 20 years ago, by Belgian, French and British capitalists; but the results were discouraging. It is said that the Belgian and French public together lost approximately $400,000,000, chiefly in the coal and iron industry of southern Russia. This loss is largely accounted for by the fact that most of the companies were formed, as usual in " boom" times, to sell stock; and that thorough investigations were not made. I11 1906, renewed interest was taken in Russian mines, especially in those of gold and copper, and a considerable literature is growing on this subject; but as yet I have seen no account of one of the large Russian mining estates. The following notes on such property, where the conditions are so different from those in the mining regions of the United States, should be of interest: This inadequate and probably somewhat inaccurate account is made up, partly from my own notes made on the ground, in the summers of 1904 and 1905, and partly from a volume on the geology and resources of the estate issued several years ago, containing surface- and mine-maps, and from a pamphlet published in 1904, giving a general account of the condition and prospects of the property. This pamphlet includes a report made in 1899 by Arthur L. Pearse, a member of this Institute. Both these books are in Russian, and were prepared by the Bogoslovsk Mining Co., which owns and operates the property. Articles in many other languages have appeared dealing with various matters connected with the estate; but I know of no other general account of it. This paper describes results from small scale tests conducted to determine the distribution of impulse on target plates when subjected to loading due to the detonation of a buried mine. The tests were conducted with saturated sand, dry sand, and water as the loading media. Tests were conducted for flat plates and for plates with angled bottoms. Previous testing has shown that angled bottoms can reduce the total vertical impulse delivered to the vehicle significantly. Different stand off distances were investigated as well as loading of the targets both on center and off center. It is very important to know not only the total impulse delivered by a detonating charge but also how this impulse is distributed over the bottom of the vehicle. A complete understanding of specific impulse will permit those parts of the vehicle, taking the greatest amount of loading, to be sized properly. Experimental results were compared to analytical expressions provided by Westine and Tremblay.

The paper point out the styles of Pacific Rim epithermal gold mineralization. Some characteristics of differing styles of epithermal gold mineralization influence investment decisions (metallurgy, metal ratios, mining style), while others should be taken into account during prospecting (pyrite content and resistivity govern geophysical techniques, vein/breccia styles control drilling, gold distribution influences ore reserve determinations). Two groups of epithermal deposits are distinguished by the fluid style which controls ore and gangue mineralogy. High sulfidation systems develop from the reaction of hot acidic magmatic fluids with host rocks to produce characteristic zoned alteration and later sulfide (dominantly enargite-pyrite) and Au-Ag-Cu deposition. Ore systems display permeably controls governed by lithology, structure and breccias, typically phreatomagmatic breccia pipes, and should be distinguished from a group of generally non-economic acidic alteration including: steam heated alteration, lithocaps or barren shoulders, acid sulfate, and magmatic solfatara alteration.

INTRODUCTION Direct reduction of iron ores has unquestionably become established as an important step in the worldwide steelmaking industry. The history of this development has been long and fraught with difficulty. In 1800, Champlain suggested the direct reduction concept using carbon and a shallow hearth vessel. Roughly 100 years later, Jones attempted a commercial process using carbon and producer gas in a rotary kiln. During the early years of this century, numerous attempts were made to start commercial direct reduction plants using such processes as Hoganas, Wiberg, Krupp-Renn, and others. Most of these were short lived, being abandoned due to a variety of technical and economical factors. Today, however, a new generation of direct reduction processes has emerged. We enter 1977 with at least 40 commercial plants in operation using 15 processes in 14 countries. These plants have combined total annual capacity of roughly 10 million tonnes of direct reduced product. Many articles have been written, and projections made, concerning the future growth potential for direct reduction. As is al- ways the case with projections, the numbers vary, but the outlook does not. Anyone who participated in the years of effort that have gone into this field of endeavor should be excited and justly rewarded by noting the shape of the curve in Figure 1.

Selection of tunneling method, specially the use of shielded machines for application in deep rock tunnels can be heavily impacted by presence of ground convergence and squeezing conditions. Tunnel convergence is a function of ground conditions (i.e., rock mass behavior, groundwater, in-situ stresses), size of the opening, and TBM operational parameters. The case study of Ghomroud water conveyance tunnel project in Central Iran, which is under construction using a double shield TBM, is used to examine the effect of rock parameters on tunnel convergence and hence on the need for over excavation and shield lubrication to avoid problems with the shield getting stuck. Although it is impractical to perform a continuous assessment of rock mass conditions within the shield or in the lined tunnel, results of field observations and subsequent studies show that the amount of the tunnel convergence has direct correlation with the percentage of fines and large rock fragments in the muck and TBM thrust/torque/ROP. These relationships have been examined and will be presented in this paper.

Tunneling requirements are presenting designers with greater challenges. The design and construction of the 2000-ft long unidirectional twin highway tunnels for the approach to one of two bridges of the Louisville-Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges (LSIORB) Project is no exception. Excavation under low cover, beneath an historic site, with each tunnel of 70-feet wide and 50-feet high dimensions will set precedents for US highway tunnel excavation size. To investigate ground conditions to supplement final design of the highway tunnels, an exploratory tunnel excavated through karstic limestone and shale will be located within the confines of the proposed final alignment. With the LSIORB Project, Jefferson County, Kentucky and Clark County, Indiana will have improved cross-river mobility between them. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) are developing the LSIORB Project jointly, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Section 4, one of six sections, as shown in Figure 1 is the East End Kentucky Approach and Connections to I-265. Key elements of Section 4 are the twin three-lane highway tunnels under the historic Drumanard Estate. The property is located on the north side of US Highway 42 (US 42) at the intersection with the Gene Snyder Freeway (also KY841) as shown in Figure 2. One aspect of the project consists of the excavation of an Exploratory Tunnel along the southbound alignment tunnel. At the time of preparation of this paper, KYTC has not awarded the Exploratory Tunnel Contract. This paper will focus on the planned geotechnical investigation program that will occur during excavation of the exploratory tunnel and how the design of the twin highway tunnels will incorporate the findings to achieve an innovative and efficient configuration.

The current exploration boom in Central and South America shows no sign of abating and, if anything, is growing. This is despite an inevitable cooling in the recent frenzied buying of resource stocks on the Canadian exchanges which have funded much of the Latin American exploration. Several factors appear to be driving the boom. Firstly, the resource potentials in this vast under-explored regions are nothing short of phenomenal. Secondly, after decades of stifling nationalization and restrictions that stood in the way of foreign investment, especially in mining, emerging nations the world over now suddenly find themselves competing with each other to be the most attractive.

The Tati Activox® Project (TA®P) is the first step towards the implementation of the Norilsk Nickel Activox® process. The ultrafine grinding (UFG) and autoclave pressure leach process conditions are the heart of the Activox® patent. Low grade base metal sulphide concentrates are leached in the process to recover the base metals and to produce LME grade nickel and copper cathodes and cobalt carbonates. The downstream processing of the metal-containing liquor produced by this process includes solvent extraction circuits to extract and concentrate metal-rich solutions, before the various final products are obtained. This paper gives an overview of many of the relevant design aspects taken into consideration in the design of the Tati Activox® solvent extraction circuits. It addresses key design elements related to leach process conditions such as scaling, materials selection for corrosive solutions, pH control, crud formation and treatment, multiple SX trains designed to prevent organic cross-contamination, and design aspects related to the mitigation of fire risks.

Personnel at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are studying the technology and applications of salt-gradient solar ponds (see below) for both electrical and thermal energy generation. The brine extraction and processing site operated by the Kerr-McGee Corporation at Searles Lake, California, offers ideal conditions for economic construction of solar ponds. Furthermore, since rising conventional energy costs adversely affect the economic recovery of brine by the present process, this site was selected for a study on the feasibility of integrating the solution mining of trona (Na2CO3?NaHCO3?2H20) in the lower salt with solar ponds for heating. The major emphasis of this study was to determine whether inexpensive thermal energy available at the brine extraction site would be useful in extracting increased mineral value from the resource. The present operation, which involves the simple extraction of the complex brine and its processing at the adjacent plant, is sometimes referred to as solution mining. Since the concept discussed in this paper involves injecting a heated sodium sulfate brine to dissolve carbonate underground, the proposed scheme is referred to as "enhanced" solution mining. Gold ores containing antimony suffer from poor recoveries of gold in cyanidation due to the impact of antimony on the cyanidation process. Techniques such as lowering the pH for cyanidation can improve gold recovery, nevertheless a limit can be reached where high cyanide consumption makes traditional processing uneconomic. The paper outlines a process for the pre-treatment of gold-antimony concentrates to remove the antimony resulting in a low-antimony content gold-bearing residue suitable for efficient treatment for gold recovery through cyanidation. This hydrometallurgical process produces a by-product credit of commercial grade antimony trioxide as Senarmontite that can significantly offset the cost of the pre-treatment.

This Bureau of Mines report tabulates methane emissions from U.S. bituminous coal mines with daily emission rates of at least 100,000 cfd according to States, counties, and coalbeds. Most of the methane emitted is from mines in the Appalachian States. Total daily emission in 1975 was 216.3 MMcfd, compared with 227.0 MMcfd in 1971 and 214.5 MMcfd in 1973. Thirty counties in nine States hid daily methane emissions of 1 MMcfd or more. These emitted 93 percent of the total methane. The highest emissions were from Monongalia County, W. Va., which accounted for 18.9 percent of the total. This was followed by Marion County, W. Va., 9.6 percent; Buchanan County, Va., 8.3 percent; Jefferson County, Ala., 6.1 percent; and Washington County, Pa., 5.9 percent. The Pittsburgh coalbed emitted 45.7 percent of the total methane, followed by the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed with 12.9 percent. The report lists 196 mines, of which 60 had daily methane emissions of 1 MMcfd or more. Included in this compilation are the identification and thickness of the coalbed, methane emission, coal production and ventilation rates, number of drifts, shafts, and slopes used for ventilation purposes, shaft depth, age of mine, and gas-to-coal ratio.

Book Review MAN-TO-MAN: THE STORY OF INDUSTRIAL DEMOCRACY. By John Leitch, Phila¬delphia, Pa. The B. C. Forbes Publishing Co., New York, 1919, 2.19 pp., 7 1/2 X 5 in. $2.00. "Man to Man" is a short, well-written, well-printed, easy to read and very interesting hook. It is an account of a method introduced into more than twenty industrial plants to give the workers a share in managing their own troubles. It is not a panacea for labor troubles and strikes, but neither have existed where the new method has been tried. The scheme is, in a word, to organize the working force like the government, having a cabinet composed of the executives, a senate composed of foremen, and a house composed of men elected by fellow workers from all departments. This governing machinery takes up all complaints of workers, investigates, reports, and settles. The increased profits due to economy and increased production from this cooperation are divided 50-50 between the company and the men. Experience has shown that, since inattention, tardiness, irregularity, and inefficiency tend to reduce their profits, all men very quickly, after once convinced of the sincerity of the management in their scheme of cooperation, eliminate them because it is for their personal profit. Astonishing results have been attained, including higher wages, greater output, lower unit costs, great reduction in labor turnover, elimination of waste, an increased loyalty and a waiting list of employees even in periods of labor shortage. Profit sharing as such and stock ownership as a benefit to industrial relations are discussed briefly and illuminatingly, although they are not believed by the author to he the best way to bring about the human relation between those who work,for and those who work with money. The author is not against unions but does not believe the union is the best medium for improving industrial relationship. The look is nowhere dogmatic but is always forceful and convincing and, being well written, is very entertaining. It is doubtful if "Industrial Democracy" is the right expression for the solution of the problem but certainly anything that will place on the shoulders of labor some of the responsibility of industry and will increase production is tine much-to-be-desired desideratum. It is a. contribution to the solution of our biggest problem and should be read by everyone who employs men and who has been worried by the labor turnover. P. E. B.

Large GDP increases in the Pacific Rim countries have been accompanied by similarly large increases in demand for oil products. In the case of residual fuels, this demand has been tempered by the substitution of other energy products such as coal or gas.In the region's developing and newly industrialised nations, it has not been possible to make the very large investements in infrastructure which allow other energy sources to be used for transportation. As a result, GDP growth has been mirrored in the demand growth for automotive fuels. Other non-sustitutable products such as lubricants have also benefitted by the region's GDP growth.The combination of a number of years of sustained growth, coupled with increasing quality requirements is now stretching the upgrading capacity of the region's refineries. If, as seems likely, the region continues to enjoy a high GDP growth rate, then this will be accompanied by increasing reliance on finished products coming out of the Middle East. The owners of the most simple form of refinery in which crude is simply distilled and the naphtha reformed into petrol will face major capital investments. If they decide not to bear this cost, they will face increasing problems in selling their surplus residual fuel oil at an economic price. Quality will become an increasingly important issue. Not only in the well publicised areas such as unleaded petrol, but also for products such as lubricants which play a major role in the efficiency of modem equipment. Quality of service such as hours of opening, ease of access, and service station facilities will also become increasingly important as the oil companies use these to attract customers and gain brand differentiation.
