Bedrock gold mineralisation has been located in association with an extensive float train 25 km west of known alluvial gold. It is in the form of open, matrix-supported breccias comprising pyritic quartz/sericite clasts in a vuggy, cherty chalcedonic and crystalline quartz matrix. Fluid inclusions in pyritic clasts indicate trapping temperatures for gold mineralising hydrothermal fluid of 170-240 degrees C. This mineralisation could represent the upper part of a feeder zone to an exhalative hydrothermal system. It is possible that other high-level feeder zones could be preserved elsewhere in the area. Deep weathering of such a system could provide a source for the alluvial gold localities near Helmsdale. It is suggested that east and central Sutherland presents good prospects for exhalative epithermal gold mineralisation and the associated feeder zones

Fully-grouted roof bolts comprise more than 80% of the primary roof supports used in U.S. coal mines. However, nearly 1,500 MSHA reportable, non-injury roof falls occur each year, and most of these are attributable to failure of the roof bolt system. Anchorage failure is one failure mechanism for fully-grouted bolts. As roof deformation works its way upward, the bolts can become heavily loaded near their upper ends, If the applied load exceeds the anchorage, the bolts will simply pull out. Research dating back 30 yrs indicates that this type of anchorage failure is most likely when the roof rock is weak, just where roof support is most critical. In soft shale or coal roof, the small amount of data available in the literature indicates that 20-30 in of resin anchorage may be required to achieve the full capacity of the bolt. In other words, the "full resistance zone" of a 60 in bolt may actually be just 30-40 in. Despite its potential importance, there is no widely accepted anchorage test for fully grouted bolts. Standard pull tests have sometimes been employed, but they provide no information on the anchorage near the top of the bolt. An alternative, first described more than 25 yrs ago in the U.S., is the short-encapsulation pull test (SEPT). With this test, the bolt is installed with only a short (1 ft or less) tube of resin. In recent years variations of this test have become international standards. This paper describes recent studies using short encapsulation pull tests in the U.S. Tests were conducted in the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Safety Research Coal Mine at Bruceton and at underground mines in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The study found that the SEPT can be used to make a simple evaluation of resin bolt anchorage. Suggested procedures for conducting SEPT are included. The study also confirmed that poor anchorage can be an issue, particularly where the roof rock is very weak. Some simple techniques for improving anchorage, and thereby the effectiveness of fully grouted bolts, are discussed.

The need for selective metal separations has increased as the mining industry encounters more complex ore bodies and the demand for higher performance end products expands. Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) is a green chemistry process that involves use of SuperLig® resins to selectively remove desired metals from a variety of solutions in mining and metals processing industries. Recoverable metal concentrations can range from multiple g/L to mg/L or less. The MRT separation process is based on green chemistry principles and can efficiently produce high purity metal products with minimal waste generation and energy usage. In this paper, applications of MRT to metal recovery and purification in the minor and specialty metals industry will be presented and discussed. Examples will be described involving cobalt, nickel, zinc, rhenium, iridium, indium, germanium, bismuth, and cadmium, as well as removal of lead and iron from process streams.

Since the early 1990s it has been evident that electricity demand has outstripped investment in generation and transmission. At the same time, concerns were being expressed about the risks associated with the run down of the Maui gas field. It is axiomatic that the necessary investments firstly require a stable and supportive regulatory and fiscal environment, and secondly that such investments have long lead times. A unwillingness by successive Governments to fund the necessary infrastructure, however, lead to the profound restructuring of the electricity with the ultimate objective of transferring the investment risk from Government to the private sector. Successive power crises since 1992 result from a failure to put in place a regulatory framework necessary to provide the environment to allow the private sector to make the needed investments within the necessary timeframe. The electricity sector has now stabilised to the extent that the regulatory risks associated with generation investment have been reduced. This does not mean that risk has been eliminated, however, and both economic and environmental issues will continue to constrain investment in some power proposals particularly those in the South Island and especially any South Island coal or gas thermal proposal. This is firstly because of several very simple economic issues:  1. while the South Island may have significant coal resources it lacks a significant electricity market; 2. except for a six to ten week period in a dry year, low cost hydro will price any large-scale South Island thermal out of the market which will restrict any large scale thermal station to a dry year and/or peaking load; 3. except for a six to ten week period in a dry year, export capacity on the HVDC link to the North Island is constrained to around 964 MWe (and 482 MWe from North to South in dry years); and 4. construction of any new thermal plant in the northern half of the North Island will price any South Island thermal station out of the market. There are also significant environmental issues associated with the establishment of a large scale thermally based power station in the South Island. Because the South Island lacks any large scale economically proven gas reserves, the environmental constraints considered are those associated with coal production. A coal mine dedicated to power generation will have significant on-site impacts associated, in particular those associated with disposal of opencast overburden and visual impacts. These will, however, be partially offset by the relative remoteness of such sites to population centres. What cannot be offset, however, is the off-site impacts, in particular, CO2, SOx and NOx emissions, water disposal and acid mine drainage.

A safety glass eyepiece which had been repeatedly exposed to mine environment over a number of years was studied to determine some of its optical properties. In the regions from 385 to 400 mµ and from 625 to 760 mµ, the transmittance was less than the 89 percent required by the American Standard Safety Code for Head, Eye, and Respiratory Protection. From 200 to 320 mµ the relative transmittance of two parts of the eyepiece was found to vary widely, having a maximum of 38 percent difference at 315 mµ. Irradiation of the glass by ultraviolet light caused enhanced absorption in the range from 200 to 1,200 mµ. There was a time-dependent increase of 1016 color centers per cubic centimeter throughout this range after 36.5 hours of irradiation. The rate-of-growth curve for the optical density, at 243.5 mµ and 23° C, was resolved into linear and saturable components, indicating zero order and first order

"Pyrolyzed carbons are generally known as good microwave absorbers and their dielectric properties still remain to be fully explored. In the present study the dielectric properties and dielectric polarization-relaxation phenomenon of a typical activated carbon was investigated. The experimental results indicate the complex permittivity is highly dependent on temperature and frequency. The decrease of permittivity with increasing temperature from room temperature to ~100 °C is probably ascribed to the release of the water vapor adsorbed on the surface of activated carbon, and the variations of permittivity with temperatures between 100 °C and 450 °C in the frequency range of 300 MHz to 3000 MHz are mainly attributed to the decreased relaxation time of dielectric polarization.IntroductionPyrolyzed carbons have been identified as excellent microwave absorbers owing to their high dielectric and electrical loss under microwave irradiations. Among them, activated carbon continues to attract more and more attention from researchers. Due to its special physical properties, the production, modification and regeneration of activated carbon with the assistance of microwave have been widely studied over the last few decades [1-6]. However, only few attempts have been applied to explore the dielectric properties of such materials due to the complexity and variability of their organic precursors and activation processes [7,8]. In order to shed a light on this problem, a typical sample, Norit® A Supra USP powdered activated carbon, was adopted to perform dielectric characterization, which may provide useful information for its wide application in the fields of purification, energy (hydrogen) storage and so on."

"LOCATIONViceroy Minerals Corporation owns and operates the Brewery Creek heap leach gold mine located approximately 55 kilometers northeast of Dawson City, Yukon Canada. Dawson was home of the Klondike Gold Rush 100 years ago. Upon startup in November 1996, the Brewery Creek Mine was the northernmost operating heap leach gold mine in North America and one of the most northern in the world. Located at 64"" 02' latitude, the mine is less than 300 km south of the Arctic Circle. Access to the mine is available at Kilometer 14 of the Dempster Highway, linking Inuvik, NWT and the Klondike Highway, 40 kilometers east of Dawson City. The immediate vicinity is the only part of Canada not glaciated in the Wisconsin advance, which has resulted in an oxide ore deposit due to approximately 80,000 years of weathering - an area unique in Canada.DESCRIPTION OF OPERATIONSIn order to utilize heap-leaching technology successhlly in an extreme northern climate, a number of design features were incorporated into the process flow sheet to operate on a year round uninterrupted basis. Winter temperature may dip below minus 50 ""C, demanding an approach to mining and leaching that is different from heap-leach operations in more temperate climates. Because of the severe winter temperatures, the mine operates approximately 2 10 days per year, while the leaching process is continuous on a year round basis. Run of mine ore (ROM) is placed on the heap beginning in mid April until late October. Overall gold recovery is projected to be 78% over a 325 day leaching cycle with annual production levels of 2.3 million tonnes of ore placed on the pad, with an average of 75,000 ounces of gold recovered per year. The recovery process utilizes conventional sodium cyanide leaching, carbon adsorption, high pressure stripping, thermal reactivation and acid washing, and on-site smelting.HISTORYFollowing a comprehensive governmental and public review of the proposed project, a Class A Yukon Water license was issued in August, 1995. Construction started in 1995 and leaching commenced in October 1996.A Socio-Economic Accord with the Tron Dek Hwech'in First Nations provides for employment, contract, and scholarship opportunities for First Nations citizens."

THERMAL expansion coefficients of a uranium were originally reported' on the basis of X-ray diffraction measurement of lattice constants at 25°, 300°, and 650°C. These data have been reproduced by Katz and Rabinowitch.' CuK radiation had been used in this work, with consequent crowding of the patterns. Considerable overlap of the back-reflection lines was observed as the temperature was raised. Subsequent reexamination of the data led to the conclusion that errors had resulted from failure to obtain unequivocal indexing of the high angle reflections at elevated temperatures. The measurements have been repeated, using FeK radiation, which provided sufficient dispersion to assure proper indexing of the reflections, at each temperature level. The unit cell dimensions were re-determined at ten temperatures, from 25" to 650°C. Schuch and Laquer easured the macroscopic contraction from room temperature down to —253°C, and reported a negative value from —210" to —253°C; they suggested the possibility of the occurrence of a phase change. In the present work, the lattice constants of uranium have been measured down to —253°C, to test this hypothesis. Filings were prepared from a single piece of pure uranium bar stock. They were carefully cleaned with a magnet and pickled in nitric acid to remove traces of iron from the file. They were then annealed at 600°C in a sealed evacuated silica tube. The annealed filings were pickled in strong nitric acid to remove any oxide layer, washed in water and alcohol, quickly dried, and sealed in evacuated thin-walled silica capillary tubes. If properly sealed, the sample could be heated to the a-ß transforination temperature without significant buildup of the diffraction pattern of oxide. The high temperature X-ray diffraction camera was modified from the design of Hume-Rothery and Reynolds.' The thermocouple used to record the specimen temperature was calibrated from lattice-constant measurements of a standard silver specimen, using the Hume-Rothery and Reynolds values for silver over the temperature range from 25" to 700°C. Temperatures were reproducible to 210°C. Temperatures to —210°C were attained by passing precooled gas over the sample. "The old Albert Silver Mine is a polymetallic deposit comprising concentrations of CuPb- Zn-Ag-U-F within a set of sub-parallel quartz-hematite veins which occur within the fine-grained apical phase of the 2050 Ma old A-type Bushveld granites. Mineralization occurs as an early pyritechalcopyrite- arsenopyrite-galena-sphalerite-(argentiferous) tetrahedrite paragenesis followed by a later, more oxidized assemblage comprising chlorite-hematite-fluorite-pitchblende. Accumulation of metals appears to have taken place at the interface between a coarse-grained porphyritic granite and an overlying fine-grained phase: veins occur in the latter and represent leakage of magmatic fluids from the differentiated, water-saturated, subjacent granite.Mineralization processes in the Bushveld granites are believed to be related to long-lived circulation of dominantly magmatic fluids stimulated by the high heat productive capacity of the host rocks. Endo- and exogranitic tin-tungsten and base metal mineralization formed during an evolving hydrothermal system that lasted for several hundred million years, forming innumerable small- to mediumscale polymetallic deposits. At the Albert Silver Mine, unroofmg of the cover sequences at circa 1600 Ma to 1700 Ma resulted in the incursion of lower-temperature, high-f02 meteoric fluids which remobilized the earlier sulfides and introduced the paragenetically late U-F mineralization."

Metal casting is one of the most important operations in ferroalloys factories. After the tapping of the furnace and the depuration of the metal, the preparation for customers with cooling, crushing and sizing begins. In total production costs, this contains around 8 % of the total cost of the metal, depending on the value of the fines and other important parameters. From an investment point of view, this represents around 20% of the total capital for a new furnace. Casting onto a water-refrigerated copper plate is not new for molten metals. In steel, continuous casting machines are normal in every factory. Water granulation casting exists at some ferroalloys plants. However, the majority of plants and production technology still use the technology of lumping, crushing and sizing. This technology is time consuming, produces fines and requires a relatively large work force. In 2001, Ferroatlantica put into operation a new water-cooled copper casting-machine, which seems to be a very convenient solution to solve all these problems. It is in operation at a silicon factory; the same place where the new ELSA electrode was developed for silicon metal production. This paper describes our experiences using it.

fractured ingot will show a complete diagonal structure. If the temperature is lowered, the equi-axed zone is larger and the pine tree growth is less. A small ingot, though, is prone to this columnar structure, even though the casting temperature is kept down. The speed of cooling after solidification is slower in the hollow ingot than in the solid, therefore the granulation, which takes place after the crystals have formed from the liquid metal, is apt to produce larger grains than in the solid ingot. This is not a detriment. The original crystal size is of much more importance. The size of the grains due to this granulation constantly varies in response to mechanical work and subsequent heat treatment. Surface weakness, as shown by seaming and checking on the exterior when working or by cracking in hardening, is in some measure the result of the surface stresses of the ingot when cast. The temperature of the ingot mold or speed of freezing of the exterior of the ingot is of great importance and much seamy and cracked steel is caused by a too quickly cooled skin. Ingots that are turned or milled all over will not seam very much in working, in fact they are practically free from seams, whereas an ingot rolled without a preliminary machining operation is full of seams and cracks, some long and some short. It has been said that these short seams and cracks in the surface of the bar are the result of elongated depressions in the surface of the ingot and that if an ingot is cast very smooth it should give fewer surface defects. This is partly true, but an ingot cast very hot and having a very smooth skin will crack and seam very badly in the mill, as will the surface of an ingot poured very cold, which is very crinkly, because of the low temperature of the metal. The cause of the cracks and seams in one is not the cause of the cracks and seams in the other. The tube method of hollow drill steel manufacture is superior to the older method because of: (1) Greater freedom from external and internal straining; (2) the inherent small crystal size; (3) absence of harmful segregation, resulting in weakness of wall of hole. (4) less liability for steel to crack in inside of hole during forging or hardening; (5) toughening effect, arising from mild steel wall of hole limiting the intense hardening on quenching. In a given size of steel, however, the cruciform sec -tion shows the most breakage; it is inherently a weak section. It contains less steel per foot than any other standard section of the same size and when rolled the wings tend to cool off setting up cooling stresses.

Mine ventilation simulation software has become an essential tool for the mining industry to design and manage mine ventilation operations. Building a well-calibrated mine ventilation network is time consuming, however, and requires great effort. In the last several decades, the mining industry has seen a steady increase in the use of air velocity sensors to monitor airflow and detect unexpected abnormal airflow in some key locations in underground mines. The present research work was carried out to explore the possibility and methodology of calibrating a ventilation network model using atmospheric monitoring system (AMS) data on a routine and ongoing basis.

"The effect of metal cations on the rutile flotation using styryl phosphoric acid (SPA) as the collector was investigated by micro-flotation test, bench scale flotation test, zeta-potential measurements and adsorption measurements. The micro-flotation results indicated that Fe (?) and Al (?) ions in low concentrations had obvious activation on the rutile flotation, and Pb (?) ions in low concentrations had smaller activation of rutile, but Fe (?), Al (?), Pb (?), Ca (?) and Mg (?) have strong inhibition of rutile flotation in high concentrations. The bench scale flotation results indicated ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), boracic acid, and sodium hexametaphospate can decrease the metal ions concentrations, and increase the recovery of rutile flotation. Adsorption measurements and zeta-potential measurements revealed that Fe (?), Al (?) and Pb (?) ions were adsorbed on the rutile surface, and had interaction with SPA. But when these ions concentration were over the largest adsorption capacity, residual metal ions could occur chemical reaction with SPA.INTRODUCTIONRutile is one of the favored minerals for production of titanium dioxide white pigment, primarily through the chloride manufacturing process (Stanaway 1994; Hou et al., 2013) However, the majority of rutile ores belong to refractory ores, while flotation is one of the most efficient methods to separate fine rutile from gangue (Dolbear et al., 1937). With the flotation development, many effective collectors were successfully applied in the oxide ore. Many reviews have indicated that organic phosphonic acid collectors showed good selectivity on oxide ores such as ilmenite and rutile (Bulatovic & Wyslouzil 1999; Liu & Peng 1999).It is inevitable that many types of metal cations are present in ore pulp. These metal cations significantly influence the flotation of minerals. Liu et al. (2015) showed that Ca2+ and Mg2+ could improve the floatability of spodumene at pH 12.5 and 10.0, respectively. The authors proposed that Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions readily form hydroxy complexes (CaOH(l) and MgOH(l)) and precipitates as (Ca(OH)2 and Mg(OH)2) in strongly alkaline solutions. Fan and Rowson (2000) investigated the effect of Pb(NO3)2 addition as an activator on ilmenite flotation and showed that it could improve ilmenite floatability. The addition of Pb(NO3)2 resulted in an increase of ilmenite zeta potential in both weakly alkaline and acidic aqueous solutions. Mehdilo, Irannajad, and Rezai (2015) studied three kinds of ilmenite of different origins and discovered that both Mg and V had a negative correlation with ilmenite flotation, while the Mn content seemed to correlate positively with flotation efficiency. A number of studies have also showed that Fe3+ can improve the floatability of ilmenite (Fan et al., 2009; Nuri, Mehdilo, & Irannajad, 2014)."

It is proposed that the intergranular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels is associated with the presence of continuous grain houndary paths of either second phase, or solute segregate resulting from solute-vacancy interactions. Experimental observations of structural changes and crrosion behavior of different types of austenitic stainless steel provide support for this poposal. On the basis of this model, it is shown that the intergranular -corrosion susceptibility of austenitic stainless steels in nitric-dic hromate solution may be substantially reduced either by suitable heat treatments or by impurity control. AUSTENITIC stainless steels, such as Type 304, generally have excellent corrosion resistant properties when properly solution heat-treated and used at temperatures where carbide precipitation is slow. However, several corrosion environments have been found which produce intergranular corrosion of solu-tion-treated stainless steels, that is, those steels with no detectable carbide precipitation.''2 Of the various corrosion environments, the most widely used test solution has been the boiling nitric-dichromate solution. In these acid solutions, stainless steels have been found to be susceptible to intergranular attack despite the addition of carbide-forming elements such as titanium or columbium, or despite lowering of the carbon content or use of high-temperature solution treatments. Studies of the electrochemical mechanism of corrosion attack have been made by several worke1s3'4 who found that oxidizing ions such as crt6 depolarize the cathodic reactions and consequently raise the open-circuit potential of stainless steel immersed in nitric acids. As a result of this, the anodic reaction is accelerated. The reason for the localization of anodic activity at the grain boundaries, and resulting intergranular corrosion, has not been conclusively determined. Several workers, e.g., Streicher,3 and Coriou et al.,4 have suggested that the strain energy associated with grain boundaries provides the driving force for the accelerated intergranular corrosion. This argument would predict that alloys of high purity would still be susceptible to intergranular attack. However, work by chaudron5 and by ArmijO,6 has shown that high-purity alloys are immune to attack, in disagreement with this argument. An alternative suggestion is that chemical concentration differences exist between grains and grain boundaries, that is, impurity segregation at boundaries, and that these chemical differences provide the driving force for localized attack. It is this impurity segregation which can lead to accelerated dissolution of grain boundaries when the alloy is exposed to a suitable corrodant. This mechanism would predict the immunity of high-purity alloys to inter-granular attack, which is in agreement with experi-mental observations. In the present paper, some recent studies on inter-granular corrosion of austenitic stainless steels which were conducted by coworkers and myself will be re-tibility A simple model will be described in which it is proposed that the intergranular corrosion of aus-tenitic stainless steel is associated with the presence of continuous grain boundary paths of either second phase or solute-segregated regions.* On the basis of this model, it is suggested that the intergranular corrosion rate can be markedly reduced by the formation of a discontinuous second phase at the grain boundaries if the discontinuous second phase incorporates the major part of the segregating solute, drained from the grain boundary region. Results are presented of corrosion tests and electron microscopic studies of different types of austenitic stainless steel after various heat treatments which provide experimental support for this model. Finally, a solute clustering mechanism, based on a solute-vacancy interaction, is shown to be consistent with the results obtained for inter-granular corrosion of solution-treated austenitic stainless steels. EXPERIMENTAL Corrosion tests using weight loss measurements were made on sheet specimens, which were lightly electropolished, washed, and immersed in boiling (115°C) 5 N HN03 containing 4 g crt+6 per liter added as potassium dichromate. Studies in which the inter-granular penetration depth was measured both by electrical resistance and metallographic methods have shown an empirical correlation between the rate of intergranular penetration and the weight loss per unit time for identically treated specimens of stainless steel." As a result, although all the corrosion data reported here are in terms of simple weight loss measurements, these data are considered to reflect primarily the rate of intergranular dissolution. Fig. 1 shows a typical result of intergranular attack of a solution-treated Type 304 stainless steel after 4 hr in a boiling nitric-dichromate solution. The wide grain boundary grooving at the surface, and the attack at incoherent twin boundaries, are evident; very little corrosion attack is seen at the coherent twin boundaries. The Province-wide road ban on movement of heavy loads has had the effect of curtailing or stopping development in several areas. In the Leduc area, the discovery well has been restricted in flow to only a fraction of normal due to limited storage space, but drilling at Imperial Leduc Nos. 2, 3, and 4 has been continued for the past few weeks. The No. 2 well is within 100 feet of the producing horizon and should be completed within the next few days. According to reports, it has been logging slightly lower, structurally, than the discovery well, but, regardless of the outcome, it has been an important test to determine westerly cross-section of the Leduc structure. No official reports have been made available of any tests made during the drilling of the well, but it is understood that promising oil and gas shows have been indicated in higher formations. Actual drilling operations have not been commenced by any of the other companies holding leases in the immediate area but it is expected that, when road bans are removed and equipment is assured, several wells will be commenced. Announcement has been made that Imperial Oil, Limited, will drill a well near Battle lake, about thirty-five miles southwest of the Leduc field. Location of the well has been made following an extensive seismograph survey of the area, with total depth of the test well expected to be in the 8,000- to 8,500-foot range. Drilling will be done with the heavy-duty rig last used at the De Winton test. Imperial Oil have abandoned hope of oil production in the Provost area after drilling nine wells, but will retain their interest in the gas field that has been developed. Of the wells drilled, four indicated gas flows ranging from 1,060 to 13,200 M.c.f. per day.

The markets and applications of Wyoming bentonite deposits are primarily determined by the functional properties of a bentonite ore which results from the unique mineralogy and chemistry of each deposit. Commercial bentonite products contain sodium montmorillonite as the major mineral component, with minor concentrations of accessory minerals such as quartz, opal (silica hydrate), mica, feldspar, gypsum and zeolites. The chemical composition of the sodium montmorillonite influences the functional properties of the bentonite in significant ways. The type and concentration of various accessory minerals also influence the acceptability of the bentonite in each market.

This paper presents the results of the second in the series of annual canvasses on the consumption of ferrous scrap and pig iron in the United States, inaugurated in 1935 by the Bureau of Mines and published in Report of Investigations 3329. The study was undertaken in response to requests from trade organizations and others for detailed statistics on this phase of the iron and steel industry. Thus, for the first time, producers, buyers, sellers, and consumers of iron and steel scrap have had an accurate statistical picture of this important raw material As originally contemplated, the study was to be continued on an annual basis, but, owing to budgetary limitations for the fiscal year 1937-38, the Bureau may be unable to conduct the canvass for 1937.

This study deals with research on the reduction process of neodymium oxide by molten salt electrowinning. Neodymium fluoride and lithium fluoride electrolyte were used for feed stock of electrolyte and neodymium oxide was added as precursor. Cell current was confirmed that cell potential was applied as constant potential of 4.5V. Argon gas injection into the electrolyte was carried out to confirm convection effect on current efficiency. Applied current was gradually decreased without argon flow, but applied current was kept within a certain range with argon flow in electrolyte.

Caterpillar introduced 21 new products during Caterpillar Press Days ‘96, held in June at the company’s proving grounds near Tucson, AZ. The event, billed as the largest product introduction ever held by Caterpillar, was attended by press from around the world. Most of the new products were demonstrated at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Training Center in the Sierrita Mountains south of Tucson. Under the scorching Sonora Desert sun, the press was treated to demonstrations of the new equipment. After a display of the equipment’s power and capabilities, the press was given an opportunity to operate the new models and, in some cases, compare them with the old.

To concede that I am the most surprised - not to mention the least likely - recipient of the Daniel C. Jackling Award is a true confession I must share with you. Quite honestly, I've asked myself, "Why me?" The Jackling Award has a well-deserved reputation of being a practitioner's, a doer's, a CEO's award - not kudos for a retired school teacher! While at least five of the previous recipients have taught in universities, to my knowledge I am the first to earn the award for "alleged" academic accomplishments. It is humbling enough to keep me livable for a long time. If you glance over the roster of Jackling Award lecture topics, you will spot another anomaly: The lectures last year and this deal with the subject of education - the only two in the 37-year history of the award. The two complement one another rather well, too, C. Allen Bom of Amax addressing critical needs of public education, while I am going to look at the post-high-school years. But I want to focus on more than engineering education. The training role of industry - the principal consumer of our product-also warrants examination. As I hope to establish, there is something unique about mining engineering - education and practice - that is both strength and weakness. We need to recognize that, if we are to cope with the weaknesses in order to capitalize on the strengths. We look at five premises that relate to the uniqueness of the mining engineer and his or her preparation for a professional career.
