Publication of the Bureau of Mines annual surveys of the capacity of petroleum refineries in the United States was suspended after the entry of the United States into World War II . The last published survey was that of January 1 , 1941 , released in April 1941 as Information Circular 7161 . The purpose of this publication is to provide comparable information with respect to crude - oil and cracking capacity on January 1 , 1947. No attempt is made at this time to bridge the gap in annual statistical series from the date of the last published survey to the present one . However , complete summary tables will be included in the succeeding survey for January 1 , 1948 .

The planning, design and operation of mines must include the development of positive environmental, community and land-use benefits if it is to achieve good corporate social responsibility and minimise detrimental impacts throughout the life of the mine. Life-of-mine (LOM) planning should, therefore, consider conducting mining activities in the best socially, environmentally and economically acceptable manner, from the commencement of exploration to post-closure of the mine. Current knowledge of LOM activities in relation to public health (life-of-community, or LOC) impacts neither fully captures the full suite of human health and well-being impacts, nor comprehensively informs society on these issues. This knowledge gap is becoming more apparent as public antipathy is increasing towards mining activities within Australia, Canada and globally. The purpose of this paper is to present preliminary and informative results of a literature review to gain insight into the extent of available public health and well-being knowledge associated with mining development. LOM development must also benefit the LOC, in that it must aim to minimise detrimental impacts, and maximise beneficial (including health) impacts on all associated communities. Health planning and programing for mitigation of potential adverse health impacts of mining should extend beyond the scope of work-related injury and illness (resulting from chronic exposure to harmful substances, infectious and lifestyle illnesses), to the health and well-being of workersÆ families and extended associated communities. By mapping the available but rather scarce literature on LOC areas to recognised LOM stages, this review found shortcomings and imbalances regarding research reporting on mining and its health-related impacts in the worker-to-community continuum.CITATION:Kirsch, P, Viswanathan, D, LaBouchardiere, R, Shandro, J and Jagals, P, 2012. "The Special Standard Surge bin at Agrium’s Vanscoy Potash Operations (VPO) has been plagued with flow problems and wear, and corrosion issues for it’s entire working life. Investigation showed that the carbon steel construction, bin geometry, and resultant funnel-flow pattern were directly responsible for production losses and disproportionate maintenance and capital costs. Potash enters this bin at between 140°C and 165°C, but the stagnant potash outside the active flow channel was much cooler, allowing moisture to migrate toward the outer regions, which caused corrosion of the walls and reduced live capacity as the potash in this area hardened and built up on the walls over time.A 2013 inspection revealed holes and paper-thin areas in the lower cylinder wall sections and in the conical hopper. The only thing preventing major leaks and even a potentially catastrophic failure was the buildup of stagnant hardened product on the cone walls. It was concluded that the cone had reached the end of its life and required replacement. VPO’s original plan was to replace the cone in kind and repair the cylinder as necessary; however, a failure-mode and bin-performance investigation combined with a lifecycle- cost analysis indicated it would be better to redesign the hopper.For success in retrofit projects, it is essential at the design stage to consider the bulk solid flow properties and the operating environment involved. Because education in this area is not offered at a university level, engineers often do not fully appreciate the effects of the flow properties of bulk solids on bulk material handling equipment.Jenike & Johanson conducted flow properties tests on samples of potash and using the data, redesigned the bin and the feeder. After the modifications, VPO’s surge bin provides safer, more reliable operation with a much longer predicted working life. Using this retrofit as an example, we aim to provide a general understanding of bulk solids flow theory and highlight the importance of customizing the design to the appropriate flow properties in the cost effectiveness, reliability, and safety of a bulk material handling system."

As coquerias enfrentam um grande problema que é a oxidação do carvão. Este fenômeno as afeta diretamente, pois deterioram as propriedades coqueificante do material, impactando na síntese do coque metalúrgico. Portanto, gerando perda de valor econômico, uma vez que as propriedades coqueificantes são fatores que determinam a atratividade e o custo do carvão. Sendo assim, torna-se necessário o uso de medidas para retardar o efeito da oxidação, garantindo a menor perda possível, desde a extração do carvão mineral da mina, até o carregamento nos fornos de coqueificação. Neste estudo em particular, definiu-se uma equação para previsão do decaimento de fluidez, que é a principal propriedade afetada pela oxidação, e matéria volátil de carvões em pilhas a céu aberto. Foi também desenvolvido o estudo do efeito da aspersão de uma camada polimérica para minimizar os decaimentos de fluidez e matéria volátil.

"Flotation using large volume cells has grown in importance during recent years, particularly given the increasing demand for minerals whilst ore grades are decreasing. Outotec introduced the TankCell® e300 in 2007 to enable concentrator plants to process these higher tonnages. From the beginning, TankCell® e300s with FloatForce® mixing mechanisms have demonstrated good metallurgical performance with decreased operating costs and high availability. This paper deals with specific engineering challenges that need to be considered when installing these units rather than giving examples of performance. Today there are over 100 TankCell® e300s operational worldwide. As more of these units are installed new technical challenges are encountered and solutions developed to maximize their productivity. Lessons have been learnt by operators, engineering companies and the cell manufacturers on how best to design and layout these cells in modern concentrators to ensure smooth transition from design to installation to operation. This paper presents information on important design considerations and learning that has been obtained through the design, installation and commissioning of the TankCell e300 around the world. Areas pertaining to cells layout such as feed and discharge arrangements along with items of metallurgical concern such as sampling, reagent addition and the potential benefits of installing a variable speed drive on the motor will be covered in depth."

"Spiral concentrators are used for processing coal and heavy minerals such as it is the case for the concentration of iron oxide from light silica gangue. The concentration process for iron ore usually consists of a rougher bank of spirals followed by two stages of spiral cleaning. The process control applied to the concentration circuit aims at maintaining a target iron content of the final concentrate and is mainly conducted by adjusting the wash water addition and the position of the splitter gates at the discharge of the spiral. This paper describes the use of a simulator to study control strategies for a gravity concentration circuit using spirals.INTRODUCTION The Canadian iron ore mines are located in the Northern part of Quebec and in Labrador (Neal, 2000). These iron ores consist mainly of hematite with some ore bodies rich in magnetite and ilmenite. The processing of the coarse hematite iron ore consists of the extraction from an open pit mine, followed by the conventional crushing and autogeneous grinding of the ore to obtain a particle size smaller than 1.2 mm. The ground ore assaying 40% hematite (Fe2O3) with quartz (SiO2) as the main gangue is processed by spirals to produce an iron oxide concentrate assaying 90 to 95% hematite.Spirals separate the particles according to their specific gravity and size (Burt, 1984; Bazin et al., 2014). These environment friendly devices have been used for decades and are still used for the preparation of coal and for the concentration of heavy minerals such as iron oxide (Staff, 1977; Wills, 1992). However very little information is available concerning the control of gravity concentration circuits. This paper analyzes the control practice of a gravity concentration circuit using a simulator. The paper consists of 3 sections. The first section describes the operation of spirals and spiral concentration circuits. The second section briefly describes the simulator and shows some simulation results for a gravity concentration circuit. The third section shows the application of the simulator for the study of control strategies for a spiral concentration circuit."

To determine the potentialities of nickel as a substitute for cobalt in catalysts for the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, RESULTS The maximum oil yields obtained in bench-scale equipment were as follows: Using 100N1:20Mn:100 kaolin:200 diatomaceous earth catalyst, a maximum yield of 133.8 cm.3/m.3 of pure CO+2H2 was obtained from one pass of the feed gas, With a nickel:cobalt mixed catalyst (Ni:Co - 3:7) having the composition 100(Ni+Co):8MgO: 5Th02:200 diatomaceous earth, a maximum of 172.2 cm.3/m.3 of pure C0+2H2 was obtained.

In operations that use the sublevel stoping mining method, production scheduling takes into account factors, including ore reserve envelopes, ore grade averages, equipment capacity, feed controls to the mill, and geotechnical restrictions, across the scheduling horizon. Mathematical programming is one of the most effective methods for enhancing the decision-making process in regard to the most viable production schedule in light of a given set of limitations. The majority of research on sublevel stope mining focuses primarily on a single objective of optimisation, which is to maximise the net present value (NPV). Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations are becoming more prevalent in the mining industry. This includes aspects relating to deforestation, land disturbances, gas emissions, community relations, and water usage, among many others. Institutional and other kinds of investors are becoming more interested in the work that resource companies do regarding their ESG obligations. This review article identifies the gap in the existing literature and proposes to simultaneously optimise the production schedule around three objectives. Two of these relate directly to ESG aspects.

A mineral purvey of 40,000 acres of the 42,213-acre Little Humboldt River Wilderness Study Area was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. There are no identified mineral resources but anomalous gold, silver, mercury, and arsenic concentrations were found. The study area is located in Elko County, NV, in the Owyhee Upland geomorphic subprovince. It is underlain by mid- to late-Miocene-age rhyolite, basalt, tuff, vitric ash, and tuffaceous siltstone. On the south side and partly within the study area, a mining company recently (January 1986) located 125 contiguous claims over an area of hydrothermally-altered volcanic rocks that have anomalous surface concentrations of gold, mercury, arsenic, and silver. Anomalous gold-silver concentrations in altered rocks were encountered at several other widely scattered localities in the study area. These elevated metal concentrations and associated hydrothermal alteration indicate gold resources may be present in the study area. A 20-ft-thick bed of diatomaceous earth, which contains 60 to 85 percent diatoms, crops out 0.3 mi north of the study area. Elsewhere, three samples of altered volcanic tuff taken within the study area contain from 46 to 70 percent zeolite (clinoptilolite). The diatomaceous earth and zeolite sampled are not of sufficient quality to compete with materials presently being marketed. There has been no mineral production from the study area, but a caved adit, about 25 ft long, and six prospect pits were found.

The multiple blasthole fragmentation (MBF) model developed by Orica models the contributions from multiple blastholes to fragmentation at any given point in the rock and simulates a production blast with the actual geometry of the blasted overburden and free faces, explosive loading, multiple decking, and delay timing of each explosive charge. The model has been successfully applied to several open pit mines and quarries around the world, including Canada and the United States. The peak particle velocity (PPV) induced in the rock from the explosive detonation is used in the MBF model as the key parameter relating to the size distribution of the rock fragmentation. Relating the PPV to the rock fragmentation is based on earlier work relating the particle velocity to the dynamic strain in rock. A recent publication further revealed that the PPV is related to the maximum relative displacement that induces three dimensional strain at a point in the rock. The model can explicitly model most of the blast design parameters including explosive properties.

The relatively recent explosion of available data in all business sectors has induced a common expression of “drowning in data, starving for information.” The mining sector is affected by the information age through equipment-based sensors, process monitoring, and traditional enterprise data sources. Information technologists have developed techniques such as data mining that apply new and old statistical algorithms to large datasets. Mine planners and managers can apply these tools for improved planning and control, thereby increasing the use of the highly underutilized information system infrastructure in most modern mines. This paper describes the use of data mining and its enabling technology, data warehousing, in the development of an energy consumption model for large surface mines using real historical data.

Longwalls using shearers in seam heights of less than 1.2 m (48 inches) are relatively rare in the U.S. Westmoreland Coal Company is currently operating a shearer-equipped longwall at a cutting height of 1.17 m (46 inches) in its Bullitt Mine. This face has averaged 2795 metric tons/day of operation since its startup on April 3, 1984. Longwall productivity in thin seams is substantially impacted by equipment reliability and availability of useable working room for travel and access. This paper addresses the design criteria used in selecting this face equipment, with the goal of maximizing these two parameters. Equipment discussed includes shearers. face conveyor, shields, stageloader, and emulsion system.

"Soil contamination by oil as well as by other organic pollutants poses a major problem to the environment. Various methods have been used to remove organic contaminants from soil, such as: biological, thermal, chemical and physical. Methods based on Mineral Processing principles have also been used (cyclone separation, gravimetric separation, attritioning and washing). This paper studies the possibility to remove a rich-in-contaminant soil fraction by applying flotation. The contaminated soil was artificially prepared by mixing soil with diesel fuel. Sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and a tertiary amine (TA) were used as collectors. The effect of collector quantity added and conditioning time was studied. The results showed that the removal of a rich-in-contaminant soil is feasible while a clean fraction is also obtained. In several cases, the removal of oil-contaminated soil approaches or reaches 100%. Introduction Human activities are intimately associated with environmental pollution to the air, water and soil, as well. Soil pollution from inorganic and organic compounds is of equal importance with that of air and water, as it results in soil degradation and its concomitant problems with respect to meeting the human needs (house building, agriculture etc). Heavy metals along with their compounds are encountered among the most usual soil inorganic pollutants. The corresponding organic soil-pollutants are oil, oil-derivatives, pesticides, various aromatic (benzene, phenols, cresols, toluene etc) and poly-aromatic (naphthalene, anthracene etc) hydrocarbons, as well as various other organic compounds (pyridine, cyclo-hexane etc). Oil remains the basic energy source sharing 38% of the global needs, being followed by coal and gas with a share of 26 and 21% correspondingly [1]. The entire activities related with oil production, transport and consumption promote pollution in the air, water and soil. Consequently, soil pollution from oil is favoured at refineries, storage sites (due to possible pipe and tank leakage, tank cleaning works, loading and transportation) and, finally, at the oil-selling sites. Oil (or diesel-oil) fuel is a mixture of hydrocarbons, with 10-20 carbon atoms in the chain of each. It is mainly composed of paraffins, naphthenes and various aromatic compounds. In general, oil is composed of 20-30% in aromatic compounds, 5-6% in naphthenes and the rest is paraffins [1]."

Iron ore pellets use bentonite clay as binder at dosages from 0.5to 1.0% (10 to 20 pounds per ton) of moist iron ore concentrate. Bentonite is typically shipped hundreds of miles from Wyoming to the Lake Superior iron ore district. It is therefore best to know how effective a bentonite will be before it is shipped and used to bind concentrate into pellets. Current tests of bentonite effectiveness include: plate water absorption, methylene blue uptake, free swell, exchangeable cations, and glycolated layer expansion. However, these tests have many disadvantages: First, they only measure the ability of a bentonite to expand, disperse, or absorb, not how well it will bond. Second, most of the tests require up to 20 hours to perform. Bentonite only has a few minutes to interact within the concentrate before it is indurated (sintered). These long-term tests may not reflect the true behavior of bentonite. Third, the tests are tedious and often results are inconsistent between different iron ore concentrates, labs, and technicians. Fourth, some of the testing equipment is difficult to procure. Fifth, procedures are often difficult to standardize. In this paper, the Binder Effectiveness Strength (BESt) test to evaluate binders for iron ore pellets is presented that: measures the ability of bentonite to bond, requires only about two hours to complete, is simple and reproducible, and utilizes readily available equipment that has been standardized for decades.

"We have developed a monolithic micro-spectrometer suitable for a variety of sensing applications including industrial process monitoring. The device consists of a solid structure with a volume less than 6 cubic centimeters. All optical components of the spectrometer including two aspheric mirrors, a diffraction grating, and entrance and exit surfaces are fabricated onto the surface of the structure. All light paths are internally contained within the structure. The result is a small, rugged spectroscopic sensor ideally suited for use as a process monitor. Due to its monolithic nature the device requires no post-fabrication alignment; nor can it be knocked out of alignment during use. Although many materials and thus wavelength regions were possible, the prototype device discussed here was produced in PMMA by precision diamond turning. However, lower cost manufacturing approaches involving injection molding are under development to produce an affordable sensor.Due to its rugged monolithic design, small footprint, and low cost the monolithic micro-spectrometer is ideally suited for distributed monitoring applications often required for industrial processes. It is expected that modified versions of this sensor designs will be required for specific applications so as to maximize the performance and resolution over the operating range. For example, the prototype device described here operates over a wavelength range of 500 nm to 1000 nm. The performance of this device as a real-time surface monitoring sensor will be discussed in detail. Our approach of using wavelength dependant scattering resulted in the reduction to practice of a miniature, monolithic, rugged, low-cost, micro-instrument in a sensor sized package. The process sensor applications community has been faced by the cost versus performance issue. Simple go/no-go sensors are typically inexpensive but they provide very limited and sometimes dubious data. Scaled down traditional instruments offer very good measurand information but are typically cost prohibitive, fragile, and still relatively large. This work will bridge the gap between these two extreme sensing alternatives."

Removing the ledge formation in the Hall-Heroult cell during the electrolysis process may significantly reduce the energy requirement of the aluminium production process. In the absence of the ledge, however, the sidewall-material types become heavily restricted since the cryolite is very corrosive at the electrolysis temperatures. This paper study the corrosion behaviour of sintered nickel ferrite, nickel aluminate, and magnesium aluminate refractories (as possible candidates for sidewall material) in molten aluminium and cryolite melts with various alumina content at 980°C. Immersion tests of refractories with various porosity were conducted to assess the suitability of the refractories in the corrosive environment of the electrolysis cells. Microstructural change of the refractory after immersion were analysed using secondary scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sampling of the melts were taken at 0, 10 min, 30 min, and each hour up to 6 hrs, and subsequently analysed by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) spectroscopy. Based on the projected concentration of the refractories constituents in the melts, it was predicted that the corrosion rate of NiFe2O4, NiAl2O4 and MgAl2O4 in cryolite with 11 wt per cent Al2O3 were 461 × 103, 1.03 × 103, and 798 × 103 cm/a, respectively. Much lower corrosion rate of 2.3 cm/a for NiFe2O4, 2.6 cm/a for NiAl2O4 and 0.3 cm/a for MgAl2O4 were predicted if the refractories in contact with aluminium melts. Erosion played an important role in the corrosion as the concentration of the refractory constituents in the melts were beyond its solubility limit. It is therefore crucial to increase the densities of the refractory and improve its wetting characteristics.

A reliable and stable ventilation system is essential to the safe operation of underground mines. The stability of a mine ventilation system becomes extremely critical while responding to a fire incident since an unstable ventilation system will pose a risk of airflow reversal. The reversed airflow could bring the fire contaminants such as toxic gases and smoke unexpectedly to working areas. In the past few years, there has been a growing interest in the study of ventilation network stability using the concept of resistance sensitivity, which is described as an indicator of how the airflow in an airway is reacting to a resistance change of other airways. Several methods of calculating the resistance sensitivity in a mine ventilation network have been carried out by researchers and scholars around the world. However, the proposed methods heavily rely on a vast amount of mine ventilation simulations, which are very time and computer-power consuming, especially for a large-scale mine ventilation network. In this paper, a direct derivative method calculating the resistance sensitivities with a single mine ventilation simulation has been developed and implemented into a mine fire simulation software, MFIRE. The results from the direct derivative method were verified against the results from a traditional method. The direct derivative method has been proved to be reliable and accurate.

Tests were conducted in commercial foundries to determine the suitability of calcined anthracite as a cupola fuel. The calcined anthracite performed satisfactorily at two of the three foundries where iron-melting tests were conducted. Performance at the third installation was unsatisfactory because metal temperatures deviated widely and, in general, were lower than is desirable for the type of castings being made.
