"In the 1990s metal prices were trending in a long-term decline and the usual cost-cutting exercises were adopted. Cuts to research and development made innovation difficult and the outlook was grim. But necessity is a strong motivator, and these conditions spurred the Mine to Mill movement that optimised across organisational ‘silos’ and utilised new technology tools, innovative software and increased computing power. Many applications of Mine to Mill exploited the fact that comminution is usually the site processing bottleneck and blasting is more efficient at breaking rock than grinding. This approach sought to: understand and characterise rock breakage from mining to the milldevelop models and simulators for blast design, fragmentation, crusher and mill circuitsdevelop tools to measure in real time the particle size distribution of rocks on run-of-mine (ROM) muck piles, at the primary crusher truck dump pocket and on conveyorsensure effective communication across the silos between geologists, blast design engineers, mining engineers and metallurgists.These methods and the technology tools available in the 1990s were widely adopted at numerous sites around the world with significant benefits. Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill throughput increases of 10–20 per cent were common. This was the advance the industry desperately needed. It was low capital cost; it was obvious. It was here to stay.Except, in too many cases, it didn’t. In the minerals price boom of the 2000s Mine to Mill was no longer necessary to ‘survive’, even though it was still good business. Some operations, including some of the early success stories, slipped back to old habits of optimising within organisation silos instead of across them. Fortunately, other operators still embraced Mine to Mill and developed new techniques. Mine to Mill was still successful, but not as widely adopted as we had expected it to be. Now the boom has ended and operations are again under cost pressure. Since these are the same circumstances that created Mine to Mill, it seems time to achieve the wider adoption. Since the 1990s many new or advanced technology tools are now available for Mine to Mill projects: blasthole sensors, new explosives formulations, new blasting techniques and modelling, ore tracking devices, improved image analysis to determine size, texture and colour of coarse ore, grade sensors, whole-stream simulation tools, and even more powerful computing hardware and data analysis software. If we could achieve so much in the 1990s, how much more can we achieve today when we have the same imperative, the same potential and a larger number of high technology tools?Citation:Cameron, P, Drinkwater, D and Pease, J, 2016. Once completed, the Montreal Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM) will be the fourth largest automated transportation system in the world. The REM represents construction costs of approximately 7.0 billion Canadian dollars. The project consists of 67 km of twin tracks over four branches connected to downtown Montreal. The project includes 26 stations with 3 underground stations in downtown Montreal. One of the underground stations was built using the NATM method with thin permanent shotcrete initial and final liners separated by a sprayed on waterproofing membrane. The 2 other underground stations were built with the cut and cover approach including one using permanent secant pile wall with permanent walers and struts as the support of excavation and the final perimeter wall of the station. The project also includes the rehabilitation and enlargement of the Mont Royal Tunnel. This 100-year-old double track tunnel is about 5 km long. The REM also consists of 3.6 km new TBM tunnel connecting downtown to the Montreal International Airport through saturated soft ground and karstic rock. By the time of RETC, the construction of REM underground structures will be completed. This paper presents the design and construction aspects of the underground structures of this mega project.

This report describes the exploration and recent utilization studies the Bureau of Mines conducted on the Iron King, Chambers, and Dry Camp chromite deposits in the John Day district, Grant County, Oreg. The field investigations were undertaken during parts of 1939 and 1942 to determine the tonnage and grade of chromite in the district that could be utilized as a war reserve for the steel industry. As a result of the Bureau's field work, which included construction of 9 miles of access road, 6,204 feet of diamond drilling, 195 channel samples, and 1,020 linear feet of trenching, an ore reserve of 208,000 tons of 22-percent chromic oxide was indicated in the 3 deposits. Less than 1,000 tons of this ore has been mined since the field work was completed because the 2 largest deposits are submarginal in grade and there is as yet no incentive to develop and mine the ore. Since the war, however, the Bureau has been seeking means of utilizing the ore. Two methods of utilization that show promise are direct smelting of the ore in an electric furnace and use of the chromite for making refractory brick.

MR. M. W. Boom: I would like to congratulate Mr. Russell on his fine paper. One very good point which has always appealed to me is the smooth working of a steam hoist as compared with electrical. He does not mention the steam hoist at Springhill which has been working there for a good many years. MR. S. R. NEWTON: I have read with a great deal of interest the paper presented by Mr. Russell on the development of haulage engines in the mines of the Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation. He is to be congratulated on having produced a comprehensive article showing, step by step, the various improvements that have been made over the years in the design of such engines. I am quite in accord with Mr. Russell's statement that the positive tooth clutch can have too many teeth, and also that the method of driving a sliding clutch hub of any design should be by means of a hexagon or octagon on the shaft. Where the clutch hub does not of necessity slide on the shaft it can be pressed on and keyed to the shaft in the normal manner. With regard to the 'Cramp' internal-expanding jaw-type clutch, while it is true there are more moving parts than with the clutch consisting of a ring with internal cut teeth and a driver having a fewer number of teeth as .described by Mr. Russell; there are compensating advantages to the internal expanding jaw-type of clutch. The V shaped profile of the teeth permits of engagement of the clutch with very much less 'jockeying' of the drum. This is particularly the case in vertical-lift mine hoists, where it may be necessary to engage and disengage the clutching mechanism at frequent intervals.

The purpose of the work reported herein was to investigate whether available telephone multiplexing equipment offered a means to rapidly upgrade the traffic-handling capacity of present mine telephone systems and provide for selective calling for safer and more efficient mine operation. Common sense was used to decide whether or not an item could be termed "available." Since conventional telephone gear is not designed to interface pager phones for example, existing shelf items would require adapters to compatibly interface these two types of gear for independent operation over the present single twisted pair used in mines. These and similar small items were allowed, but if a system required any extensive design work to adapt it for the mines, we ruled it "not available."

A storage and drainage tunnel advancing below I-75 in Detroit, Michigan experienced sudden subsidence. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was damaged to the extent that its shield, cutting head and extensive interior components needed to be extracted and replaced along with several completed tunnel segments. The tunnel was 16 feet (4.9m) in diameter with crown over 79 feet (24m) deep at the time. The tunneling contractor immediately engaged their designers and specialty subcontractors to develop a scheme to access the machine and repair the tunnel. They required a shaft 99 feet (30m) deep, with unobstructed plan dimension of 50 feet (15m) to accommodate the large components that needed to be removed and replaced. This precluded the application of an internally braced excavation and instead earth support solutions focused on use of a compression ring. Since the completed tunnel section behind the TBM obstructed closure of the compression ring below its invert, this paper describes the innovative access shaft solution employed. A conventional compression ring was constructed using 5 feet (1.5m) diameter drilled shafts down to the tunnel crown. In front of, and to the sides of the tunnel heading, the secant shafts were extended to over 150 feet (46m) depth, creating a horseshoe of support extending 50 feet (15m) below the planned excavation invert. Larger diameter "King Pile" shafts were drilled immediately to either side of the tunnel, overlapped into each end of the secant "horseshoe". The king pile shafts, together with a heavily reinforced ring beam above the crown elevation, acted as a door frame to transfer hoop loads from the incomplete secant arc into reaction supports above and below the tunnel. These oversize king pile shafts were extended and socketed into rock over 70 feet (21m) below tunnel invert. Very tight installation tolerances were necessary to maintain secant shaft alignment to depths exceeding 150 feet (46m). The project operational, geotechnical, and quality data was managed and visualized using a custom GIS interface. This paper will present the design approach employed and review the construction and quality program selected to repair the tunnel.

O sistema ferro-oxigênio alumino tem sido investigado há muitos anos em função de sua importância para a indústria do aço. Uma grande fração de todo o aço plano produzido é de aço de baixo carbono acalmado ao alumínio, não apenas pelo baixo conteúdo de oxigênio residual em solução que pode ser obtido mas, também, pela importância do alumínio residual na formação de AlN, ferramenta importante no controle de estrutura e textura obtidas. O sistema Fe-O é relativamente bem compreendido e quantificado, da mesma forma que o sistema Fe-Al. Entretanto, há discrepâncias significativas na quantificação do comportamento do sistema Fe-Al-O havendo, ainda, bastante controvérsia com respeito a equilíbrios importantes. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é (a) realizar uma revisão crítica dos experimentos e avaliações termodinâmicas principalmente do equilíbrio Al-Fe-O–Al2O3 (b) avaliar os métodos atualmente usados para descrever este equilíbrio e (c) apresentar recomendações sobre os dados, com base em sua confiabilidade e consistência.

"INTRODUCTION In the present war, with increasing demands on foundrymen for speedy production of sound castings, the role of sand in foundries has paramount importance.Foundry sands include both molding sands and core sands. Molding sands are those used in making molds, whereas core sands include those used for ""cores"" that fill the parts of the mold intended to be openings or hollow spaces in the casting. Core sands are, as a general rule, relatively coarse-grained as compared to molding sands. Coarse-grained sands, however, are required in making molds for large castings.Owing to the intimate relationship between properties of the sand and casting defects, it is necessary (for most efficient foundry work) to keep a close check on the molding sands used and to properly select and prepare a sand for a specific job. A mold is essentially an unfired refractory composed to meet specific requirements as to strength, permeability, and resiliency. Good green strength is important in preparing and handling the mold. Low dry and hot strengths contribute to cutting and washing, whereas high strengths cause difficult shake-out, with subsequent loss of sand. When molten metal is poured into the mold: a dried skin is attained, and gases from moisture and combustibles are driven off. Excessive moisture necessary for the proper working of a sand, as well as poor venting due to low permeability, are factors responsible for producing such defects as blows and pinholing. The skin of the mold, upon contact with molten metal, first expands and later contracts; these conditions are favorable for producing scab defects. Contact with the molten metal sometimes causes the skin of the mold to sinter or fuse and may produce a sand burn on the casting. Then again, the mold may develop excessive hot strength rapidly, thereby causing a cracked casting. Experienced foundrymen can other such relationships, too numerous to be included here."

In recent years, there has had a greater recurrence of studies and projects that consider tailings filtration followed by dry stacking to reduce the consumption of fresh water, the space required for disposal, and, eventually, to reduce the costs of the project. In addition, this technique could be required to meet new environmental restrictions to extend the life-of-mine of existing plants or to enable the development of new projects, especially in areas of high social interest. This article is intended to describe the most relevant technical aspects of the design and implementation of an iron ore tailings filtering system and its final overland disposal as well as physical and metallurgical surveys, and laboratory and pilot testing. Furthermore, it is presented how these activities are inserted in the project development to rationalise the resources. The case under study considers an iron mineral wet magnetic concentration processing plant. The outcome tailings are dewatered by means of thickeners, where the overflow water is recycled back to the plant. The underflow slurry is pumped into intermediate storage tanks before proceeding with further dewatering and final disposal. The project consists of a tailings filtration plant, belt conveying systems, a temporary stockpiling system, trucking loading and transportation system, moisture-conditioning facilities (spreading and airing), and final disposal facilities (compacting). Due to the stickiness of the filtered tailings that governs the belt conveying system design, the operating moisture range must be established. Besides, proper technical aspects such as planning, executing, and analysing both the laboratory and the pilot testing data to validate process design parameters; selecting filters; defining spare filtering capacity; handling the out-of-range filtrated moisture; sizing the belt conveying system; configuring the equipment involved, must be considered.

Success in implementing new technology for metallurgical processes is not a foregone conclusion: This paper includes a survey of 23 new technology-based metallurgical plant start-ups, in which the authors have identified 7 successes, 9 difficult start-ups, and 7 failures. Success is defined not only as meeting the schedule and budget to the end of mechanical completion; the key goal is a fast ramp up to the full design production level, with minimum plant and equipment modifications required after start-up. This paper sets out the key factors that underlie achievement of a quick production ramp up curve, as determined from the authors' project experiences and a quantitative analysis of over twenty metallurgical plant start-ups, both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical. Thorough test-work and pilot plants, plus appropriate scale-up to the full commercial plant, are key determinants of success in implementing new technology in metallurgical processes. Another critical factor is the number of new elements and their interactions. Project phasing is also particularly important for new technology projects, with appropriate review after each phase to develop a risk mitigation plan for the subsequent phase. New technology projects need committed champions to advance the project in the face of sceptics, but also require dispassionate and unbiased experts to ask the hard questions. As a project evolves, it is important to periodically question the appropriateness of assumptions, as well as to re-assess the relevance and completeness of data from test-work I pilot plants I industrial analogues. Sufficient human and financial resources are required to complete the often arduous implementation phase. During the ramp-up period, the operation generates little positive cash flow; however, significant expertise and capital are required for the de-bottlenecking projects that are often necessary to reach the plant's design output level.

The paper presents the development of Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) calculation of rig track loading, the production of the Building Research Establishment document “Working platforms for tracked plant” (BR 470), working platform testing and considerations of rig stability. The paper also discusses the importance of rigorous and well documented procedures and proposed future development of rapid working platform testing methods. Topics presented include the fundamental requirements and principles involved in the testing, design and maintenance of working platforms, rig track loading, the BRE design method and site testing analysis. The paper stresses the need for testing and design processes to be robust and simple and quick to perform as there is often little time between the award of a contract and the need to start work on site. Also, it is vital that all aspects of working platform design can be carried out with information that is available to the platform designer. Developments in the UK over the last two decades have resulted in improved quality and safety of working platforms that will hopefully be further enhanced as design and testing methods continue to improve.

ABSTRACT The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment recognizes the importance of environmental protection as an important contributor to Saskatchewan’s economy, with the environmental performance of industry closely monitored. Unfortunately, environmental regulation is often accompanied by significant process that does not always add value to environmental protection activities. The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment has embarked on a visionary restructuring of its regulatory framework from conventional command and control regulation to a results-based regulatory framework. This new regulatory framework will provide for establishing clear environmental protection and resource management objectives; streamlining the environmental acts and regulations; developing an environmental code of practice; relying on qualified persons; enhancing compliance and enforcement tools; eliminating of many permits; and developing greater certainty in environmental assessment decisions. Results-based regulation promises to deliver enhanced environmental protection with less process. The uranium industry in Saskatchewan will be used as an example of the potential effects of results-based regulation.

Few efforts have been undertaken to date to assess the quality of mandated coal mine health and safety training for new miners and for experienced miners. This study was concerned with the quality and effectiveness of existing classroom health and safety training programs. The study involved field data collection through pre- and posttesting of trainees, audio-taping class sessions, and administering short feedback forms with trainers and trainees at 14 sites in West Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. Results indicate that goals, methods, materials, and outcomes of existing training programs vary widely among trainers and sites. The report provides less by way of solution to problems, than it highlights the breadth of issues that relate to the question of training effectiveness and quality. The report concludes that additional work by industry, labor, government, and academia is necessary in order to improve health and safety training programs. Recommended steps are: (a) to develop performance standards and measurable criteria in each of the types of mandated training, (b) to develop better training of trainers, (c) to develop expanded training support services. and (d) to undertake further research and development in health and safety training in the mining industry

"This is a reprise of the paper ‘Back to the Future – Why Change Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Progress’ presented to the Tenth Mill Operators’ Conference in 2009. It was observed that the ‘boom and bust’ cycles of the industry, together with trends in tertiary education and the effects of fly-in fly-out (FIFO) operations raised serious questions about the sustainability of human capital in the mineral processing sector.In 2016 we find ourselves in a ‘bust’ after enjoying a decade of the longest commodity price ‘boom’ in a century. In the ‘boom’ did we:make any technological breakthroughs?put measures in place to improve our human capital, especially in the area of ‘professional formation’?The paper makes observations on the current performance of mineral processing engineers and the organisational milieu in which they operate. It questions whether mineral processing engineers are actually ‘adding value’ at some sites given their organisational and operational practices.Some technical trends are examined and what it might mean for mineral processing engineers.Given the above and demographic trends for mineral industry professionals, changes to the seemingly current laissez-faire model of professional development are proposed.Citation:Munro, P D, 2016. The purpose of this paper is to list by tabulation and flow sheet, the operating equipment and installations in use at Rosebery, and to refer to particular items which may be of interest for purposes of comparison, or because they possess some unusual feature. The general perspective has been taken from the viewpoint of operating and maintenance experience.The sequence begins with ore breaking and transport and proceeds through milling operations. The paper is in two sections, first, mechanical equipment, second, electrical equipment. A brief outline of a scheme for using gravel wash for stope filling, which is in course of installation, has also been given.

"This paper traces briefly the historical development of coal handling systems to meet the needs of a rapidly developing thermal power generation technology. The wide range of operating requirements is demonstrated by comparing and contrasting the Wabamun GS of Calgary Power Ltd. and a typical modern Ontario-Hydro thermal plant. The problems of safe storage of large tonnages of coal in stockpiles are discussed, together with recommendations for stockpile management. The development of coal bunkers and their management is discussed in detail, together with future trends in the industry."

Precast concrete segmental linings have enjoyed widespread use around the world, and are the lining type of choice for tunnels constructed using a shielded tunnel boring machine. However, there is significant variation in the design of such linings from one country to the next in such areas as materials, geometry, fixtures and fittings, waterproofing and reinforcement to name but a few. This arises because the speed at which the technology has developed within some countries and regions has sometimes outstripped the transfer of such technologies to the rest of the world.This paper provides some insights into the variations in lining design in different parts of the world with the aim of providing designers and constructors alike a reference for the different methods adopted. It provides a context for these developments by briefly summarising historical reviews of this subject before looking at some of the developments around the world over the last 15–20 years. The developments are presented with some reference to the reasons for implementation, and the advantages and limitations commented on. Having thus created us members of the same family-for the metaphorical meaning of house and kinship is identical-Mr. Carnegie expresses more emphatically than even he could in words, that, by affording facilities for closest intercourse, he in¬vites the mechanical, electrical and mining engineers to par¬ticipate in the freest interchange of idea and experience, and to correlate and combine the results of their studies and activi¬ties; and, being members of the same household, to banish re¬serve and secrecy. And now we, the members of the - American Institute of Mining Engineers, meet as though we were at home in a neighboring country. For whether we meet in Canada, in England, or elsewhere, the Institute is always received as though no political or geographical divisions separated its members from those of congenial associations in the land of its host. In truth, the title which we have assumed claims for the sphere of our activities the whole American continent, regardless of such trifling details as boundary-lines. The fact that we meet to communicate each other's experience, to discuss our difficulties, and to seek each other's aid in solving the intricate problems that so often present themselves in the course of our profes¬sional life, is an acknowledgment of our individual helpless¬ness; and therefore an argument for united effort. Eldorado Gold Corporation of Vancouver, B.C. owns and operates three gold mines. The Sao Bento underground gold mine in Minas Gerais State, Brazil produced 105,907 ounces in 1997. The La Colorada and La Trinidad open pit, heap leach mines in Mexico produced over 83,000 ounces in 1997. With a deteriorating gold market plaguing the industry throughout 1997 Eldorado had to take critical measures at each mine to enhance gold production while lowering cash operating costs. Each mine had its own unique problems to confront. This case study will discuss three distinct courses of action taken at the three mine sites.

Fires are a common and recurrent unwanted event in the operation of open pit mines. In most cases, the causes of events such as fires are already æknownÆ but are either overlooked or not fully addressed in planning. Ongoing rapid growth of the global mining industry is creating a scarcity of skilled personnel, and high turnover within operations. This contributes to loss of corporate memory in risk management activities. RISKGATE« is an online risk management system designed to support and assist in the analysis of priority unwanted events in Australian coal mining operations. Funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), RISKGATE« is a knowledge management program that delivers best-practice controls for unwanted events and assists operations in staying abreast of emergent risks and threats. RISKGATE« content has been primarily developed from an association of industry experts, and enriched with input from additional academic and technological resources. In mining operations, RISKGATE« provides a continuum of knowledge and best practice for risk identification, assessment and management. RISKGATE« will assist companies in improving safety performance, operational efficiency, operating practice and training.
