The Monsanto Company's Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto's three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. This 11/ mile road was first used in the 1959 hauling season. In 1965, five new Kenworth tractors with two, 'forty yard trailers were introduced into the haulage system. Iron ore in Australia is predicted to increase in its phosphorus content in the near future, which is detrimental to properties of steel product. Steelmakers are concerned by the content of phosphorus in iron ore will exceed limits for steelmaking and increase the converter slag ratio to molten steel, which will finally lead to a decline in competitiveness in high-grade steel production. In this paper, fundamental development of a dephosphorisation technique by reduction gasification is considered. Basic reduction examination was carried out using Australian and a synthetic model iron ore sample with phosphorus compound reagent, varying reaction time and composition of substances to find out suitable process condition for dephosphorisation. With successful lowering of phosphorus concentrations by gasification reduction of the iron ores, dephosphorisation was assumed and further elucidation works were carried out. More than 10 mass per cent of dephosphorisation ratio is obtained from Australian iron ore through batch-type 25 g furnace experiment using hydrogen as a part of reducible mixed gas. Lowering of phosphorus content occurred preferentially either in wustite or in another reducing zones, suggesting a relationship between reducing conditions to efficient dephosphorisation of iron ores. Another result of the fundamental experiment using a model sample with reagent is different dephosphorisation occurred with different reagents contributing to with unified reduction model for phosphorus, providing positive possibility for comparative evaluation, even if new morphologies of phosphorus in iron ore are clarified in future. According to these approaches, it is important to reduce iron ore efficiently and to avoid gasified phosphorus retaining and reattaching to adjacent iron ore particle at the same time. A kiln-type furnace is suggested to overcome previous technical issue, and additional experiments using larger rotating furnace were carried out for verification.

Self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers are conquering the world for reason that they are able to solve any severe fouling problem in indirect heat transfer due to the circulation of cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube exchangers. In most cases, these particles consist of chopped metal wire. Moreover, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers perform with excellent heat transfer at very low liquid velocities, which makes completely new designs of shell and tube configurations possible. Further, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers show a strong shear thinning effect in non-Newtonian liquids. All the above characteristics make the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchanger an ideal tool for the indirect heating of laterite nickel slurry in High-Pressure-Acid-Leach (HPAL) plants. Preliminary tests and evaluations of these heat exchangers have shown that the performance and price of these heat exchangers used for the production of nickel and cobalt from a laterite slurry, cannot be matched by existing conventional heat exchange systems. This article explains the principle, design, lay-out and enormous advantages of the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchange technology in a plant suitable for an annual production of approx. 45,000 ton nickel and 4,500 ton cobalt from laterite slurry through high pressure'acid leaching.

Shotcrete usage in declines and developments has become pervasive as operators strive to achieve production improvements. Issues of mix control, fibreload, thickness control, temperature and curing conditions all play a part in the quality control. Often to overcome some of the quality control issues designers over specify the strength requirements in order to meet their operational constraints. Adherence to the standard civil testing requirements of 28 days moist cured at 21ºC without properly calibrating these results to the changing environment underground leads to contractual disputes. There are a number of standard tests specified including cylinder tests, cored tests, beam tests and round determinate panel (RDP) panel tests. The logistics of storing these samples and then transporting them to concrete testing laboratories without due regard to temperature changes with time can influence the results. All the samples can be readily handled by personnel except the RDP panel. The standard RDP panel is 800 mm diameter by 75 mm thick and requires an ITH machine at the mine and a fork lift at the laboratory to move it around. This paper will examine the possibility of a panel which provides scalable results to the standard RDP panel but can be easily handled by personnel and/or tested on site with suitable equipment. This allows for faster turn around and better quality control for the sample prior to testing. This enhances the identification of quality control issues at the mine and improves safety.

Finalmente se presentarán los resultados obtenidos de las onzas de oro y plata recuperadas de esta prueba piloto y los planes futuros que se tienen acerca de estos trabajos.

The ability to fire multiple blasts simultaneously can provide significant benefits to any open pit mining operation. Reduced blast-related downtime by reducing blast events can increase equipment utilization and maximize material movement. Significant sequencing benefits can also be delivered, associated with reduced equipment relocation. This paper describes the work completed in partnership between Orica and Oyu Tolgoi to successfully demonstrate that combined production-trim and midsplit blasting could be implemented successfully while successfully managing the risk of increased damage to the final walls. The paper details the methodology used to assess key performance measures linked to final wall damage and compares the performance between the following blasting methods. • Free face trim blasting vs. combined production-trim blasting • Presplit blasting vs. midsplit blasting. The results of the initial trial blasts are presented, along with the method agreed by the key site stakeholders for ongoing application. The method used to keep the risk of final wall damage to an acceptable level is explained, along with the benefits delivered to Oyu Tolgoi operations associated with the initial 12 months of application.

AN agreement having been arrived at in 1935 whereby McIntyre Porcupine Mines would purchase gravel for back-filling purposes from Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, the aerial gear as described below was installed. As originally discussed, the plan called for installation of a loading bin at the junction to the Hollinger tram, so making the McIntyre tram an entirely separate unit. The experience of the Hollinger engineers, however, went to prove that the operation of a bin (remote from sources of heat) should be avoided if possible, owing to the severe winter conditions (35° to 40° F. below zero).

THE committee appointed to investigate the application of oxygenated air to the blast' furnace believes, after a careful study of the problem, that this enriched air will increase hearth temperature, tonnage, flexibility of operation, and quality of pig iron made, and that fuel consumption will be decreased. These improvements are supported by theoretical evidence; but a practical trial of the process is necessary to establish more definitely the magnitude of benefits realized. The commercial application, however, may profitably be preceded by a test on a smaller scale. A small furnace will, in general, respond to the enriched air in the same way as a commercial furnace and the magnitude of the benefits to be gained from varying additions of oxygen can be fairly well established at relatively little expense. A new experimental furnace, being built jointly by the Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota, at Minneapolis, will have a capacity of about 6 tons and will riot require more than 700 cu. ft. of natural air per minute. Its hearth is 36 in. in diameter and its height about 32 ft. Enough oxygen to enrich the blast to the extent recommended by the committee can be obtained from a small oxygen unit. It might even be cheaper to perform preliminary experiments with tanks of oxygen obtained from regular, dealers. A procedure in making the test that suggests itself is to start with operation on normal air; then to use blast, enriched in several steps. Systematic temperature measurements of the tuyeres, slag, and metal would reveal any changes in hearth temperature. When these changes become large enough, the burden may be gradually increased to just within the breaking point and the furnace brought back to normal, if possible, by the addition of oxygen. Such a test would show what might be expected in the way of a decrease in fuel consumption and the time taken to "straighten up" the furnace by means of oxygen. The new furnace at Minneapolis is so equipped that the furnace process can be observed from the stock line to the iron notch. We have been taking gas samples at various elevations in the furnace to study combustibility of the fuel and the reducing power of the gas. If either of these is affected by removing inert nitrogen, the change can easily be measured.

Air Leakage in underground mines is the most common cause of inefficient distribution of ventilating air. Depending upon various factors, more than one half of the fresh air entering a mine short-circuits to the return airways before reaching the working faces. Consequently, large leakages create an additional demand for increased intake air, which substantially affects the efficiency of a mine system. This paper deals with the identification of the physical variables of air leakages and offers an overview of the methods of measuring leakage.

Building up the USSR's economic strength was the result of all the achievements and successes of our economy. The Soviet Union was the first to begin planned guidance of the economy. The mining industry of the USSR, which holds the first place in the world output of mining production, has always been considered as the main raw materials basis of the country's economy. High and stable development rates are a feature of planned economic management, based on the social ownership of the means of production. During the past ten years from 1965 to 1875 the national income used for consumption and accumulation increased practically by 1.9 times. There has been no inflation, no unemployment in the Soviet Union for about forty years already. High and stable growth rates of the production of mining industries and that of the branches, which are their direct consumers are characterized by the data in table I. The friction factor is one of the more difficult parameters to determine in ventilation planning. In practice, this can be estimated from published factors such as those of McElroy. The problem with this approach is that the selection requires some judgement, and the estimated values offer no more than guideline accuracy. This study, examines the effects of four factors on the coefficient of friction for a simulated mine airway. The factors are: airway cross-section, asperity height, flow direction, and cross-cut spacing. The study includes the modeling of a mine airway and the evaluation of the results from 13 experiments on flows of air over rough surfaces. The model, physically represented by a wind tunnel, includes a rough surface section which can be modified to simulate mine airways of various shape and asperity height. Most of the experiments were performed under controlled flow conditions during which the Reynolds number was varied between 50,000 and 300,0000. Based on this study, the friction factor for a mine opening was found to depend not only on the size and shape of the surface asperities but is also affected by the orientation of them in relation to the flow direction.

Application of integrally bladed disks (blisks) is of increasing interest in compressors of aero engines. Blisks are preferred due to their potential for size and weight reduction, for increased performance and for reduced manufacturing costs compared to conventionally bladed disks. In case of a damage the blisk aerofoils cannot be simply replaced. If the damage is beyond acceptance or blending limits refurbishment is possible only by scrapping the whole blisk assembly, or more cost effective by the application of advanced weld repair methods. Weld repair of blisk aerofoils is challenging as it affects a critical part with specific requirements regarding its mechanical integrity, and as the accessibility is usually limited. The paper describes the ongoing development of advanced weld repair processes as part of a comprehensive repair strategy which have been developed for small-sized blisk assembly to give competitive maintenance cost.

A novel green technology to recovery Titanium compounds from Ti-bearing blast furnace slag under the dynamic oxidation condition was developed and tested. Air was blown into the molten slag as oxygen resource through a lance during the dynamic oxidation process, in which six important results were found: (1) The TiC, (Ti2O3), Fe and (FeO) in the slag were oxidized; (2) The temperature of slag temperature rapidly increased; (3) The viscosity of slag decreased; (4) The coalescence, growth and drop of the metallic Fe droplets in the molten slag were carried out under an air agitation condition; (5) The dispersed Ti components were selectively enriched into the perovslite phase, and the perovskite phase could be selectively precipitate and grow. And also, the perovskite phase can be separated by the dressing method. The oxidation of molten slag gives off a large amount of heat, which helps chemical reactions proceed, improve the rate of chemical reactions, and promote the precipitation and growth of the perovskite phase. The features of the technique are clean, low cost and a great capacity to deal with a large quantity of slag. It was confirmed by experiments that the precipitation of the perovskite (CaTiO3) in molten slag is obviously affected by operation factors such as temperature, chemical composition, heat-treatment, additives and so on. The precipitating kinetics and mechanism of the perovskite phase from molten slag during the dynamic oxidation processes were also investigated.

The history of black coal as a fuel dates back in Europe more than 2,300 years, and possibly longer in China. Originally the mining of coal was done by underprivileged people, but with the industrial revolution and the dawn of mechanisation, the status of the coal miner improved. The improvement continued to the present day. Coal miners now take an important role in industrialised countries and enjoy a high standard of living. The miner is amongst the highest paid and best technologically served in any industrial activity. The abundance of coal relative to alternative fuels and its widespread occurrence, brings with it a prosperity much valued in those countries with significant resources such as Australia. Coal will play a major role in easing the world energy shortage. In addition to the conventional usage, throughout the world coal gasification plants are in various stages of development. Coal liquefaction plants are beyond the drawing board stage. Slurry pipelines to supply coal for direct burning in electric generating and other plants are planned. In the current atmosphere of environment consciousness, Australia has to contend with people with only marginal interest trying to influence coal mining activities to the detriment of the overall prosperity of Australia. Fortunately enlightened legislation is the greatest protector of the environment and in many instances great improvement to the environment ensues after mining has passed. With its vast resources of black coal Australia can look forward to a significant role in future supply of fuel. As a result of the trade and industry involved, Australia can become an even more influential country in world politics, trade, and the setting of high living standards.

LITTLE study has been made of the pressure changes and energy losses that take place when an air current is divided into splits which subse-quently unite. The discussion and the experiments that are described in this paper deal with the division of an air current into square splits of equal size, the area of each of the splits at the downstream junction being one-half the area of the main duct. APPARATUS AND SYMBOLS The duct system shown in Fig. 1 was built of Y4-in. redwood and made as smooth as possible.The section of the top over the splits and the zone of mixing was of plate glass to permit observation of the stream lines. FIG. 1-DUCT SYSTEM. Static pressures were measured by means of pinhole tubes and a precise inclined manometer. Measurements of rates of flow were .made by determining the drop in pressure through concentric square orifices in the splits. The air was supplied by a fan operated by a direct-current motor that received its current from a motor generator set. Delicate rheostats in the armature. of the motor. made possible the perfect control of the fan speed, which was indicated on an electrical tachometer. Vanes to straighten the. flow were placed at the head of the main duct.

"This paper describes a rib-control methodology that uses standing support to provide most of the lateral resistance to the rib. The method is analyzed, and its boundary conditions for rib control are described. In this method, an animal-fencing mesh product covers 80 percent of the rib surface and is sparsely bolted to the rib. Can supports or other similar stiff supports are installed primarily as roof support for the entry. As the rib spalls and dilates, the mesh catches the material and expands, pressing against the standing support. Mining proceeds, and vertical roof loads increase the normal force on the Can supports, causing friction at the top and bottom of the support to go up, thereby improving lateral resistance to rib swelling.At one mine in the western United States, this method has proved excellent at preventing the buildup of rib spall. It substantially reduces the number of bolts used for screen installation, improves installation efficiency, reduces manual labor and provides more rib coverage than many screening methods. Because standing support is typically part of the roof-control plan in longwall tailgates, no additional standing-support costs are incurred. IntroductionRib safety in underground coal mines is an oft-studied topic because ribs are high-hazard areas. An overview of early rib safety research can be found in Jones and Mohammed (2014). There is a significant difference between rib support and rib control. Support improves safety through the installation of strengthening elements, such as bolts and dowels, designed to reduce rib spalling. Although spall reduction is preferred, controlling how the rib fails is enough to ensure safety in some situations. Rib control uses external elements to provide confinement, thereby holding sloughed material in place, or to prevent falling rib material from striking mine personnel. This paper presents a study of a control method used on the pillar side of a longwall coal mine tailgate in the western United States."

This paper on. the physical and chemical properties of crude oils from California fields is one of a series of reports on the oil-producing districts of the United States., The paper includes a short discussion of results, tabular data, and individual analyses of eight California crudes. Analyses of other crude oils from California have been published in Reports, of Investigations 2595,3/ 2608,4/ and 28465/. The samples were obtained by members of the San Francisco office of the Bureau of Mines. The collecting samples was facilitated by the courtesy of representatives of oil companies in California.

"PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) is a large-scale truck and shovel operation mining thermal-coal in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The operation produces 15 million tonnes of coal and mines over 120 million bank cubic metres of overburden annually. Approximately 35 percent of the waste rock is classified as potentially acid forming. Acid drainage must therefore be managed to prevent acid formation from spoil dumps and mined-out areas.KPC aims to prevent acid production in dumps by covering potentially acid forming spoils with materials identified as non acid-forming. The covers, built to engineering standards, minimise the flux of oxygen and water to pyritic spoils, thereby controlling the oxidation reaction, and reducing ARD discharge to negligible rates. Cover designs and cover materials vary according to stability, materials availability, equipment availability, and cost effectiveness. A modified field net acid generation (NAG) test procedure has been developed at KPC to identify and segregate overburden geochemical types. This paper discusses the ARD management strategies and operational procedures adopted by KPC to manage potentially acid forming waste rock. "MANGANESE METALMethods of PreparationMethods of preparing the manganese metal that has been used in chemical and metallurgical investigations have passed through a cycle. Most of the investigations made before the turn of the century used Moissan's pyrophoric manganese. 5/ This material was made by electrolysis into a mercury cathode and distillation in vacuo. It was essentially a pure material, and investigations in which it was employed (with proper precautions against oxida¬tion) led to accurate results concerning the intrinsic behavior of metallic manganese.An early investigation of the properties of ""Manganese-by-Mercury"" was made by M. Guntz. 6/ He prepared manganese by electrolysis of a concentrated MnCl2 solution with a mercury cathode. The manganese amalgam was pressed through chamois and distilled in vacuo (2 to 3 cm. of mercury) at 200°0., slowly rising to 250°0. Guntz recognized especially the decreased reactivity of manganese with increased temperature of mercury distillation. The most careful and com¬prehensive study of manganese made by this method is that of Kuh 7/ whose work unfortunately was never published in an accessible journal.Royce and Kahlenberg 8/ studied the electrode potential of manganese made by this method."
