On August 6, 2007, the Crandall Canyon Mine experienced a collapse which trapped six mine-workers. An MW 4.1 seismic event was recorded in conjunction with this collapse. An additional 54 seismic events were detected and located in the vicinity via routine processing techniques during the month of the collapse. Waveformbased cross-correlation detection techniques have been used to uncover 1,328 small, previously undetected seismic events which occurred near the collapse area between July 26 and August 9, 2007. This work has resulted in lowering the magnitude threshold of completeness from ML 1.6 to ML -0.5, a 2.1 order-of-magnitude improvement over standard processing techniques. Event locations have been computed using a double-difference inversion. The spatial pattern of events ultimately helps to delineate the extent of the collapsed area. It is shown that many of the large catalogued events (>ML1.6) tend to be closely followed by numerous (often 20 or more) smaller aftershocks. Cluster analysis of the known catalog reinforces prior work indicating the existence of seismic clustering on the east and west sides of the collapse. Research now demonstrates that it is possible to differentiate events related to the main collapse from those related to the rescue attempt following the collapse. The cross-correlation techniques described herein greatly improve the ability to detect small mining-induced seismic events. These methods may lead to improvements in assessing seismic hazards for conditions similar to those observed at Crandall Canyon preceding the collapse.

An investigation was conducted to determine the relationship between ASTM and Micum tumbler data and to develop equations that would enable the conversion of data from one test method for comparison with those determined by the other , and thereby facilitate the international exchange of data . Relative strengths of 18 commercially produced cokes were determined by ASTM and Micum tumblers and ASTM shatter test . Two of the samples were coke produced for foundry use , and two were produced in beehive ovens . The remaining 14 samples were produced for blast furnace consumption and had ASTM tumbler stabilities of 36 to 58. Statistical procedures were used to relate the three test methods and also to evaluate the effect of charge weights , top sizes of coke , and types of screens specified by the two standard tumbler procedures , square - hole wire mesh for the ASTM tumbler and punched round - hole for the Micum . A significant result was that the data obtained with like screens have a higher degree of correlation with a smaller standard deviation than data from the screens specified for each tumbler .

This paper discusses the principles and application of risk assessment and management as the basis for environmental management within the mining industry. Unlike in other industries, mines are required to obtain closure certificates in terms of section12 of the Minerals Act, which should ultimately release them from further environmental responsibilities. It is emphasized that the concept of environmental risk assessment and management, when applied correctly will mean that the mine will be identifying and managing environmental issues beyond those set by current legal requirements and management strategies. The focus shifts from conventional minimum legal compliance management to management of real environmental risks. The advantage of this approach is that the perceived ?shifting of legal and management goal posts? due to changing environmental laws or management principles, will not influence or dictate the mine?s short or long-term management objectives or actions, mine closure funds can be more accurately determined and mine closure should become a relatively simple procedure. The risk assessment approach has been applied to the planning of mine closure at Iscor?s Durban Navigation Collieries (Durnacol) in Kwa-Zulu Natal and certain key risk issues such as the long-term risk of water pollution from coal discard dumps have already progressed to fully quantitative risk assessment. This paper will discuss the process, which has been followed to date, with particular emphasis on the most recent phase, namely quantitative risk assessment and management of pollution from coal discard dumps. It is believed that the approach that is being pioneered at Durnacol and which overcomes some of the more obvious deficiencies of both the EMPR and the traditional IEM process will ultimately serve as the model for all responsible mines in South Africa. It is also believed that this approach will enable the authorities to issue closure certificates with the confidence that there will be no unforeseen surprises in the years after closure.

Bureau of Mines assumes no responsibility for accidents that may result from following the suggestions offered. Explosives to be destroyed may be fresh material from damaged packages, usable material for which there is no further need, or material that has deteriorated either from natural aging or from improper storage to the point where it is unfit for use.

"The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill’s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.THE FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE EQUATIONObservation of the feed and product size distributions going into and discharging from the mill in grinding circuits with low versus high circulating load ratios initially led to the definition of “circuit classification system efficiency” (or CSE, McIvor, 1988a), and ultimately the discovery of the Functional Performance Equation (McIvor, 1988b, and McIvor et al, 1992). The CSE is the percentage of “coarse” (typically with reference to the plus P80) size material occupying the mill (versus “fines” or product size material, finer than the circuit P80), and can be calculated by taking the average of the percentage of coarse material in the mill feed and mill discharge. As this also represents the percentage of the mill energy expended on targeted, coarse size material, it is directly proportional to overall grinding circuit efficiency and production rate. This is all clearly expressed in the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits, which is derived as follows.We define “fines” as any product size material, and “coarse” as that targeted to be further ground, the two typically differentiated by the circuit target P80. For any grinding circuit, the production rate of new, product size material (fines) must equal the specific grinding rate of the coarse material (i.e. fine product generated per unit of energy applied to the coarse material) times the power applied to the coarse material."

"Secondary materials have long been processed at the S-furnace of the Mitsubishi continuous copper smelting and converting process at Naoshima Smelter and Refinery. Intensive recycling in the recent years has formed concerns that impurities in the secondary materials may cause drastic changes in the chemical properties of the CL-slag, which is separated from matte in the smelting stage. Among various impurities included in secondary materials, the authors have studied the influences of sodium oxides in the CL-slag because the behavior of sodium oxide has scarcely been studied with respect to the copper smelting slag. The examinations have been applied experimentally on the distribution between slag and matte of arsenic whose acidic characteristics suggest strong affinity to sodium-oxide of basic characteristics in silicate melts. The results have been discussed by thermodynamic evaluations and the results of pyro-tests at the commercial furnace.IntroductionAt Naoshima Smelter and Refinery, the existing line of the Mitsubishi continuous copper smelting and converting process has been operated since 1991. The Mitsubishi Process consists of three furnaces namely the S-, CL- and C-furnace as shown in Figure 1. In the S-furnace, copper concentrate and powdery secondary materials (scraps, sludges, etc) are charged through the top lances with oxygen enriched air. The other secondary materials of lumpy shapes are charged through the chute installed on the furnace roof. Charged materials are smelted by the reaction heat in accordance with the oxidization of copper concentrate. The mixed melt of matte and slag overflows through the launder into the CL-furnace, where the melt is separated into slag and matte by the difference of their specific gravity. Matte is siphoned out and sent to the C-furnace and converted to blister copper continuously. The CL-slag overflows continuously through the slag outlet to be water-granulated. Granulated slag is sold as a raw material used for the cement production and so on. Various secondary materials have been processed at the S-furnace of Naoshima Smelter and Refinery. At its annual meeting on March 5, 1928, in Washington, D. C., the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association gave to the Ford Collieries Co., Curtisville, Pa., a certificate of honor for "having worked 922,628 underground man-shifts from August 14, 1920, to December 31, 1926, producing 5,755,669 short tons of coal without a fatality." This remarkable record certainly deserved recognition. It developed that this company's freedom from fatalities continued until October 2, 1929, hence the full period during which no underground fatalities occurred was from August 14, 1920, to October 2, 1929, or 9 years, 1 month, and 18 days, the total tonnage being over 7,700,000. Table 1, shows the complete safety record of the Ford Collieries Co. since 1920 as given by the officials of the company. The first item in Table 1 shows a remarkable performance. This company since 1920 has mined 15 times more coal per fatal accident than the average pro- duction per fatal accident for the State of Pennsylvania in 1928 (255,257 tons). Excluding the two fatalities (one in 1922 and one in 1929) the severity rate for the same period has been 1.259 per thousand hours worked, a record of which the company may justly be proud. However, including the fatal accidents the rate is 2.407. This compares favorably with an average of 12.4 in 1928 for 66 mines in the National Safety Competition. The Ford Collieries Co. operates three mines located in the vicinity of Curtisville, Allegheny County, Pa. One of these mines, Benjamin No. 1, is idle at the present time. The officials are: A. R. Pollock, general manager, Curtisville, Pa., and C. W. Pollock, assistant general manager in charge of safety and operation.

This research paper introduces a novel passive method for ocean mining using an electricpowered robotic subsea dredging crawler designed to operate in various subsea conditions, including unstructured and rough terrain. The electric-powered robotic subsea dredging crawler is equipped with two driving tracks and features a complex assembly of tank tread chain link, tank tread idler wheels, tank tread sprockets, bronze bushings, motor hub, motor mount, and a 12-volt direct current motor. To evaluate the performance of the electric-powered robotic subsea dredging crawler, it was compared with existing ocean hydraulic exploration crawlers, such as MK3 ROST, in terms of drive performance on an inclined ramp with five angles of inclination (0°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 30°). The experiment aimed to determine the maximum velocity, torque, and efficiency of the crawler at different angles of inclination. The collected data were analysed and plotted using Python, and the effect of the electric-powered robotic subsea dredging crawler’s weight on its driving performance was also considered. The results of this study demonstrate a quadratic relationship between driving performance and inclination angle, which can be used to optimise the electric-powered robotic subsea dredging crawler’s performance for future ocean mining robot drive applications.

In this paper, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for the short-term scheduling of open pit mines is formulated. The proposed model aims at sequencing the blocks extraction over multiple short-term periods. The model takes into account multiple processes, waste dumps, and multiple stockpiles. The short-term scheduler makes a decision on the period, destination, and route that ore and waste are supposed to take to minimize costs while meeting all the mining and processing constraints. The destinations of the extracted materials are also controlled by their rock types. A monthly short-term production scheduling case study of an iron ore deposit is carried out over a year to validate the model.

A detail of the guide rollers is shown on Fig. I; and Fig. 2 shows a photograph of a guide roller that has been in service for several months on the haul-back cable. The former practice of supporting and guiding the haul-back cable on slusher hoists at Kimberly was accomplished by using the conventional type of snatch-block pulley, but it was found that an excessive amount of cable whipping and unreasonable wear on both rope and pulley resulted from this type of cable support. The guide, which is wholly made in the Corporation's shops, consists of two vertical and one horizontal roll assembled in a frame that is lagged to the cap timber in a slusher drift. In some slusher drifts more than one guide-roller assembly is used, depending upon the length of the drift. The installations usually are placed at 30-ft. intervals. We have found by actual experience that these rollers have increased the life of the haul-back cable approximately 200 per cent, as compared with the usage of the conventional sheave-block pulley. Cable Care The underground rigging crew and the slusher operators are trained in rope splicing. No cable clamps or knots are permitted on slusher cables and all cable "eyes" are spliced. The standard practice has been to use preformed cables of ?-in. diameter for haulage and ½-in. diameter for the haul back. The preformed cables have proved to be important factors for safety in use and speed in making splices. No external lubrication is used on the cables. It has been found that dry ropes have about 400 per cent longer life than those that were lubricated under these operating conditions. An accurate record is kept of all cable life and the tonnage moved by the slushers in each working place, and if the rope wear is excessive in any particular working place, an investigation is made to determine the reason. Wire-rope Sling for Snatch-block Anchor The rope sling is shown by Figs. 3 and 4. These slings support the snatch-block pulley for the haul-back rope. The standard practice at Kimberly is to use a roller-bearing snatch-block pulley 10 in. in diameter. The snatch-block housings are equipped with a clevis attachment in preference to swivel hooks, as it has been found that the more rigid clevis keeps the cable in better alignment. The snatch blocks are hung from the cable sling, which is wrapped around the posts of the drift sets as shown on Fig. 3. This method of anchoring the pulley provides better anchorage and flexibility than those of the rigid or spring-mounted types. When the slusher-drift headings are being advanced, the snatch blocks are hung from a "gin" pole ahead of the last set of timbers' An employee is assigned on each production shift to take care of the lubrication of all slusher hoists that are being used and he is provided with tools for minor repairs.

"The use of High Pressure Grinding Rolls is gaining significant interest as a replacement for SAG milling in the comminution of hard rock ores because of the potential for reduced costs in terms of energy and grinding ball consumption. Estimation of expected energy consumption for fullscale operations has conventionally involved the testing of a few fairly large samples in pilot scale HPGRs. This paper describes the development of a small-scale batch test method for determining a work index for HPGR of a large number of samples that can be used to show the variability of the ore as an integral part of a geometallurgical approach to circuit design and production forecasting.The test equipment that was developed comprises a hydraulic press with adjustable pressure operating on small batches of ore in a locked cycle test procedure. A work index measurement was determined that links the specific energy consumed in the test to the breakage achieved such that the index can be used to predict comminution energy requirements.The measurements were calibrated against laboratory scale HPGR equipment to develop a model for design and forecasting that includes crushers, HPGRs and ball mills in a complete comminution circuit.INTRODUCTIONEstimation of the expected energy consumption for full-scale HPGR operations has conventionally involved the testing of a few fairly large samples in laboratory and pilot scale machines (Danilkewich, 2006). With the financial input of five mining corporations, SGS Lakefield Research has developed a small scale test capable of providing relevant information on the variability of energy consumption and size reduction from drill core samples. It is our intention that the values measured in the test will be scaled up, through benchmark comparison with pilot sized and full sized HPGR units, to allow plant design and throughput forecast on a block by block basis of the mine plan using a new CEET program. CEET® (an acronym for Comminution Economic Evaluation Tool) is an advanced grinding design and performance predicting tool that uses energy relationships to model the performance of SAG / Ball mill circuits."

"Syncrude Canada Ltd. operates one of the largest surface mines in the world. The mining operation has two distinct phases: (1) the removal of the overburden, utilizing trucks and shovels; and (2) the mining of oilsand with drag lines and bucketwheels. Both phases combined move approximately 330 000 BCM per day.In support of current production demands and to provide a contingent oi/sand source, Syncrude has developed an Auxiliary Production System (APS) supported by the truck and shovel operation. This system utilizes oilsand sources within the existing mine area on an as-needed basis.The recent increased capabilities of the processing plant to handle a larger volume of oilsand has increased the reliance of the APS system. To facilitate the increased capacity, an auxiliary mine was developed external to the Base Mine operation with a production capacity of4.7 MBCM of oilsand per year.Development of the Northwest Auxiliary Pit began in January 1990, with the first cubic metre of oilsand taken to the plant in June, 1990. The Auxiliary Pit, as designed, has a total ore reserve of 68 MBCM of oi/sand."

RIGHT NOW the Canadian oil business is suffering from growing pains brought on by developments outside our borders. I would like, therefore, to place our industry in perspective for you in two ways. I would like first to describe it briefly and let you see it in relation to the world oil industry. Then I would like to bring it back and place it into perspective against a strictly Canadian background. Naturally, in such a discussion, it is necessary to use a certain amount of statistical material. I'll endeavour, however, to keep it to a minimum. Eleven years ago, before the discovery of Leduc, Alberta could boast of having 21,000,000 barrels of crude oil reserves. Five years ago we had 1,810,000,000 barrels. At year end, 1957, our remaining recoverable reserves totalled more than 3,000,000,000 barrels. In 1957, our potential production in Alberta reached an all-time high of 756,000 barrels a day. Unfortunately, our actual average daily production dropped from 393,000 barrels per day in 1956 to 376,000 barrels per day in 1957. And in 1958, to date, it has dropped sharply to around 300,000 barrels per day.

The quality requirements for ladle shrouds have become stricter year by year to the pursuit of higher productivity and improved quality in the continuous casting of steel. The ladle shrouds must be sufficiently durable under severe conditions, such as operation without preheating and during several sequential castings. The consideration is that ceramic fibres, which have been applied in shrouds for thermal insulation during casting, could pose a risk to the worker's health. We realized materials for the ladle shrouds which show high strength and low elasticity. At the same time pursuing effective insulation, a coating which contains no fibres (Foaming Coat) has been developed, replacing the conventional one containing fibres. These materials are durable under conditions of repetitive use and consequently satisfy the customer's demands. The ladle shrouds which were improved in this way have achieved an excellent durable life in hot service of three times that of conventional ones. This paper reports the recent technological developments in ladle shrouds as well as their performance under hot operating conditions.

COMPRESSED air is held in high esteem by the mining engineer as a medium for the transmission of power. The transmission, however, is accompanied by a high percentage of loss. Of the total work done by the steam cylinder'in compressing the air inthe air cylinder, less than 50% is ultimately utilized by the machines underground. These losses are due to its essential and inherent properties as a gas. One of the sources of loss is that due to transmission through the pipes which distribute the air from the receiver to the various places where it is used. A Step which, it is believed, will prove extremely beneficial to the Quebec asbestos-mining industry was taken during 1931, when the asbestos mine operators of the Province assembled to work out a uniform method of naming the products of their mines. The outcome of several meetings was the drawing-up of a classification which defined, limited, and designated anew the numerous grades of asbestos marketed. It entailed no drastic departure from the existing processes of grading, nor any revolutionary changes in methods of testing, but aimed rather to perfect existing methods. The classification proposed has been accepted by all operators in the Province, who, from January first of this year, began introducing the new nomenclature. Unless one is conversant with the properties and mode of occurrence of chrysotile asbestos, with the unique milling methods devised for its recovery, and with the history of the development of their technique, he may not readily understand the basis of the new classification. For information on these and other data concerning the industry, the reader is referred to a recent publication, Chrysotile Asbestos in (Canada, by James Gordon Ross, issued by the Mines. Branch of the Department of Mines, Ottawa. The object of this paper is to present briefly some of the phases in the evolution of the classification of Canadian chrysotile asbestos, in the hope that the recent effort to standardize the marketable products of one of Canada's most important non-metallic mineral industries will open a field for discussion, fruitful in new ideas and constructive suggestions. The necessity for the grading of asbestos results fundamentally from the fact that the price per ton depends on the length of fibre. At all times in the history of the industry, the very limited available supply of the longer grades, as well as the requirements of the trade, have caused relatively very high prices to be paid for fibre over half an inch in length, while for the shorter grades the price decreases rapidly, and at a rate which bears no proportionate relation to the length of fibre.

Daring to try where others had failed, Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover translated from the Latin the principal (and first) textbook on the mining and metallurgical profession, De Re Metallica, 1556, which had been in use for two centuries and then had lain dormant for 350 years in a language unreadable except by a chosen few. Thus the Hoovers enriched the English tongue with a vitally important contribution to history in the fields of mining, metallurgy, and chemistry. To them it was a joint hobby, because they were actively interested in the beginnings of the mining profession in which they had both been trained. Illuminating the years of toil to perfect this translation shone their ideal of service to humanity, since, in the Preface, they refer to their task as "a labour of love", which had to find the moments for its execution in night hours, weekends, and holidays, extending over a period of about five years. And they add: "If the work serves to strengthen the traditions of one of the most important and least recognized of the world's professions, we shall be amply repaid". While a student at Stanford University, during the years of 1891-95, Herbert Hoover had become familiar with a copy of this Latin mineralogy classic, De Re Metallica, a rare book in the private library of Dr. John C. Branner, at that time head of the department of geology and mining. Another Stanford student in geology was also examining and studying the ponderous volume of twelve 'books'. She was Miss Lou Henry, of Monterey, who graduated in 1898, and the following year became Mrs. Herbert Hoover. Interwoven through the tapestry of their life experiences gleamed the silver thread of their interest in this mediaeval Latin textbook. Just nine years lacer, the Hoovers had commenced their translation, while they were in temporary residence in London after the seething years in China under the shadow of the Boxer rebellion.

Mining operations of the Charcas unit at present are limited to the Tiro General mine at Charcas, in the State of san Luis Potosi, Mexico. The Tiro General mine was first operated during the Spanish occupation of Mexico for rich silver ores in an oxidized zone along the outcrop of the principal vein. In depth the ore is a complex sulfide with widely varying proportions of sphalerite, argentiferous galena and chalcopyrite ; and until recent years, it was economically impossible to carry on mining otherwise than irregularly in sections of the veins richest in galena and chalcopyrite. The advent of selective flotation brought the orebody as a whole within the field of economic interest, and a flotation mill of 650 metric tons daily capacity was constructed in the year 1925. The mining of partly worked-out sections of the mine, as well as the very heavy ground in most of the stopes opened in virgin ore, presented an unusually difficult problem. This paper describes the so-called "filled top slice" stoping method finally adopted as the standard system. Physical and Geological Conditions The principal orebody of the mine is an oreshoot about 1400 ft ng in a fissure vein striking about east and west and with an average lip of 70" to the north. The footwall of the orebody is fairly cleancu and regular both longitudinally and vertically and generally shows a dell-marked post-mineral slip. The footwall rock varies from a fairly strong limestone to a broken, metamorphosed limestone which requires heavy timbering. In some sections it is an altered, crumbly porphyry, which swells badly and necessitates frequent renewal of drift and raise tirnber. The hanging wall is irregular and frequently an assay wall. The stopina width ranges from a few feet up to more than 90 ft.; it averages about 30 ft. For the most part the hanging-wall rock is a shattered and altered monzonite porphyry, nearly aways requiring heavy timbering. The orebody is greatly fractured by post-mineral movement, which usually followed the footwall and left it as a smooth surface frequently covered with a slippery clay gouge.
