I DEEPLY appreciate the honor which has been conferred upon me by my election to the presidency of this Institute, as I feel that it is the highest honor a mining engineer can receive, and I also feel that I am especially fortunate in being called to take the presidency in the year following Mr. Hoover, as I may be enabled in that way to carry on the work which he has initiated. The constructive work that Mr. Hoover has inaugurated has been of inestimable benefit in bringing not only this Institute but the entire engineering profession into a place in the public esteem to a degree which it had never before occupied.. This work Mr. Hoover will now carry on in the broader field of the Federated American Engineering Societies, of which he is president. Through that organization the engineers of this country, in all branches of the profession, will be welded into one compact body reaching from the Atlantic to the Pacific, making the united engineering profession a power for maintaining American . . ideals and standards throughout the land.,

The protection of miners, equipment, and infrastructure is discussed. While the primary focus of the described technology is to prevent miners from being injured, struck-by, or crushed by heavy equipment; another major benefit realized is also the protection of equipment and infrastructure. An attempt is made to define and classify the systems used to provide proximity detection and warnings as well as collision detection and avoidance. Information about the speed of vehicles and human operator response time can be a factor in the choice of what type of system and what features are needed to properly address the needs. How the technology adjusts to compensate for various vehicle speeds, while maintaining the same level of protection is noted. The statistics which justify the need of miner protection are provided. The primary system components required, what attributes they feature, and how they respond in the environment, is briefly highlighted. The physics behind the danger zone marker technology and what makes it so robust and reliable is established. Examples of a few mining applications and specific operational modes are provided for both surface and underground.

El presente trabajo describe el sistema de relleno hidroneumático realizado en el centro minero de Carahuara. La aplicación de este sistema consiste en enviar material chancado y mezclarlo con cemento y agua. Posteriormente esta carga se vierte en una tubería de alta presión, que se conecta a una bomba neumática y así enviar la carga a los tajeos que se desea rellenar. De otro lado, la ejecución de este sistema data desde 1975 a la actualidad, teniendo como antecedente la experiencia desarrollada en la mina Yauricocha de Centro Min- Perú y posibilitando su extensión a otras minas, cuyas condiciones se asemejan a la de Carahuara.

"The research study has been devoted to point out the better way to process a colemanite concentrate characterised by a high content of two kind of As sulphides (realgar and orpiment) finely disseminated in the matrix of the boron mineral.Scanning Electron Microscopy analyses have been carried out to determine all the mineralogical constituents and to evaluate their distribution, frequency and mutual relationships.There is a not neglectable part of realgar highly disseminated into the colemanite crystals.The orpiment recurs in small acicular crystals of 20÷30 µm in length and 5 µm in width, very difficult to liberate from the colemanite mineral particles.The colemanite concentrate, in fact, has been addressed to a chemical plant which products were boric acid and gypsum, the contaminated by As. It was unacceptable for further applications and very dangerous if rejected in the environment.Grinding tests under dry and wet conditions have been carried out in order to evaluate the liberation modality of the As sulphide minerals from the colemanite.Some difficulties have been overtaken in order to obtain a selective liberation of the As sulphides from the colemanite even if a certain decreasing in As grade in the higher size classes has been registered.All the comminution products have been analysed by SEM monitoring the liberation degree of the mineralogical constituents.Flotation tests have been carried out after different comminution flow sheet adopting different modulating conditions in order to evaluate the influence of the following parameters:• collector concentration versus contaminants concentration (As minerals) in the froths;• kind and quantity of the frothing agent to maximise the mineral recovery in the froths;• kind and quantity of the modulating agents to maximise the selectivity of the process;• conditioning modalities in order to obtain a suitable dispersion of fines and to avoid segregation of Asbearingparticles together with colemanite ones;• solid/liquid ratio of the pulp to minimise the water flow into the plant."

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the safe operating conditions for using recycled (used) lubricating oil from mining equipment as a partial replacement for diesel fuel to make ANFO-type blasting agents. The use of recycled oil (RO) saves energy, reduces oil imports, and reduces mining costs. Low ambient temperatures may cause these recycled oils to become too viscous for proper absorption by ammonium nitrate (AN) prills and result in poor blast performance, safety hazards, and environmental problems. To help quantify and resolve these issues, viscosity, mixing, and performance tests were conducted at various temperatures. Diesel fuels No. 1 and No. 2 were studied separately and in blends with 25,50, and 75% RO. Good quality ANFO mixes (94-6) were produced with dry absorbent prills and blended fuel (No. 1 diesel plus RO) at temperatures as low as -40° F (-40°C) with 75% No. 1125% RO, and at -20°F (-29°C) with 50/50. Diesel fuel No. 2 also made good mixes as low as -30" F (-34" C) with 75% No. 2/25% RO, and at 0° F(-18° C)with 50/50. Reference detonation velocity tests were conducted in 1.4" (3.6 cm) diameter steel pipe at 70°F (21°C) on No. 1 diesel ANFO (94-6), giving an average value of 9722 ft/s (2964 m/s). Comparison tests showed good ANFO performance at low temperatures. Blended fuel ANFO (75% No. 1/25% RO) mixed, loaded, and tested at -40°F (-40°C), produced an average velocity of 9247 Ws (281 8 m/s). A 50/50 blend gave a velocity of 8083 Ws (2464 ds) at -20°F (-29°C). Based on these results, a practical field method has been developed to help evaluate whether a specific oil blend will mix properly with AN at a low ambient temperature. This method will help to promote the safe and reliable use of RO ANFO at low temperatures, with adequate performance.

This paper presents the findings and analysis of the investigation of effectiveness of thin spray-on liners (TSLs) as a gas management tool in underground coalmines. The project involves spraying TSL on the area surrounding gas drainage holes whereby the TSL acts as a thin membrane decreasing the permeability of the coal. This restricts air migrating through the coal seam and diluting gas from the drainage holes. There are a number of potential benefits from this technique but key points are that gas drainage holes produce gas with higher concentrations of methane. The design and execution of a field trial to investigate the effectiveness of a TSL on purity of in situ methane from gas drainage holes is presented in this report. For eight drainage holes, the results show an average increase in methane purity by 9.14 per cent and a reduction in air contamination by an average 7.93 per cent. Overall methane flow rate decreased by 27.6 L/s; however, flow rates were unreliable due to poor measuring equipment. For most holes, methane purity was not changed significantly; however, certain boreholes were responsible for most of the variation in methane purity. The boreholes showing a dramatic improvement in methane purity were likely those with intersecting cleats covered by the TSL. If the TSL was sprayed over more area, specifically in areas where the cleats are intersecting with holes, it is likely that purity of methane in the drainage holes will increase.CITATION:Tenney, J M, Chalmers, D and Li, Z, 2015. The iron and steel industry accounts for almost 5 % of the total world CO2 emissions. Optimisation of the steelmaking process has led to significant reductions in the energy intensity to the point where it is now close to the thermodynamic limit. Further reductions are not likely to be achieved with efficiency improvement alone and will require the development of novel or breakthrough technologies. This paper will show the costs of implementing CO2 capture at direct atmospheric emission points for a number of iron and steel production processes. These include a conventional process, top gas recycling processes, the Corex and Hismelt smelt reduction processes and the Midrex direct reduction process. Depending on the point source emission, costs of capture with existing chemical absorption technology at iron and steel plants can be similar to capturing CO2 at pulverised coal fired power plants.

LOCAL yearly taxes levied on bituminous coal lands in Pennsylvania have become a cost of first importance to the coal industry of the State. In Pennsylvania there is no State tax on real estate, but local taxation of real estate furnishes the greater part of the revenue necessary for the small governmental unit, as counties, townships, boroughs, and local school, road, and poor districts. Coal in place in the ground, whether or not title thereto has been severed from ownership of the surface, is assessed as real estate and on its supposed sale or market value. There are eight classes of counties in Pennsylvania, based on population; in populous counties of the first, second and third class, assessments are made by a county board appointed by the county commissioners and are fairly uniform throughout the county. In counties of the fourth to the eighth classes inclusive, property assessments are made by property assessors elected by and for each township within a county. In these counties the board of county commissioners acts as a board of equalization and review to hear appeals. In most counties, therefore, where there is a large unmined reserve of coal, assessments on that coal vary for each township, irrespective of the fact that the coal bed is continuous under many townships.

In continuous casting process, mold powder has lots of metallurgical effects, such as covering the molten steel to prevent liquid steel from oxidation by air, preserving heat for top layer liquid steel, lubricating initial shell and so on. However, mold powder also can deteriorate the quality of final products obviously after the entrapment of mold powder in steel. In the present work, based on the similarity theory the effect of technological parameters on mold powder entrainment was investigated by water model. Experiment was carried out in the water mold using oil and water to simulate slag and steel, respectively. The results showed that increasing casting speed increased the water-oil interfacial fluctuation and entrainment frequency; viscosity of oil also had a great impact on the interface fluctuation and entrainment; water-oil interfacial tension effect the entrainment while not changing the interfacial fluctuation; submergence depth had little impact on entrainment and interfacial fluctuation.

A procedure of obtaining specimens of lead, tin, and cadmium with a moderately equiaxed structure and a smooth surface suitable for etching without grinding and polishing is described; the advantages of general oblique illumination (as opposed to vertical illumination) in the photomicrography of pure metals .are stated. Using these methods, a statistical study of the changes brought about in deformed lead, on annealing, has been made. The common mode of structural change was found to be recrystallization. Cases of growth of one original grain into another were rare; but if a totally recrystallized specimen was annealed above 200° C., a few large grains appeared and spread over the whole area, except for a certain number of small grains which remain unabsorbed. The temperature needed to produce structural change in lead was found to be lower, the greater the degree of deformation. With tin, an extension of 28 per cent. caused practically no recrystallization at ordinary temperatures, but recrystallization occurred if the specimen was heated to 100° C. In cadmium at low temperatures, the grain size decreased in marked manner as the deformation increased; but at high annealing temperatures, the grain size was comparatively independent of the degree of deformation. THE structural changes in metals brought about by annealing following a deformation at a low temperature has been the subject of many investigations. O presente trabalho estudou a influência de alguns tratamentos térmicos sobre a microestrutura e as propriedades mecânicas de um aço microligado visando à adequação de parâmetros que o classifiquem como um ao do tipo API X65 paraaplicação na prospecção e condução de óleo e gás. Diferentes ciclos de tratamentos térmicos envolvendo normalização, têmpera e revenimento foram aplicados a amostras deste aço. Estas foram submetidas a ensaios de tração, dureza Vickers e impacto Charpy, além de terem sido microestruturalmente caracterizadas com o auxílio de microscopia ótica e eletrônica de varredura. Observou-se que as microestruturas e propriedades mecânicas foram fortemente influenciadas pelos tratamentos estudados. Entretanto, apenas a amostra temperada e revenida atendeu integralmente aosrequisitos para o grau API X65no que diz respeito às propriedades mecânicas.Estaamostratambémapresentou maior a tenacidade ao impacto, o que está associado ao alívio de tensões e à decomposição da martensitae da bainita em carbonetos de ferro e ferrita. A amostra normalizada apresentou microestrutura constituída por perlita e ferrita, possuindo assim os menores limites de resistência mecânica e a maior ductilidade. Já nas espécies normalizada-temperada, assim como na simplesmente temperada, observou-semartensita e bainitacomo principais constituintes, supondo-se a presença de uma pequena fração de constituinte MA.

"INTRODUCTION Initiated as a part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense, Investigation of the fluorspar deposits of the Northgate area was begun in June 1944 and completed in March l946. Mining Operations were active in the district during most of the period of investigation.The Fluorspar, Fluorine, and Camp Creek mines develop the two more promising vein systems known in the area, the Fluorspar group of claims covering one vein system and the Fluorine and Camp Creek groups the other. Figure 1 shows the location of the properties. The Fluorspar and Fluorine properties were operated (except during the winter months) by the Western Fluorspar Corp. The Camp Creek mine was operated during 1943 and 1944 by Kramer Mines, Inc.The properties were examined April 20 and again November 4 to 12, 1943, by C. R. Wilfley, a Bureau of Mines engineer, who recommended work to determine ore reserves and to serve as a guide for development. Investigations by the Bureau of Mines covered all three properties."

Para se chegar ao padrão diversas etapas necessitam ser cumpridas para se ter um resultado confiável e uma ferramenta de trabalho acessível e de fácil entendimento pelos operadores do laminador. A Engenharia de Processos cuida de todas as etapas deste trabalho e também adota métodos para que o processo de produção se mantenha estável e com boa produtividade.

"In early 1987, the Patience Lake potash mine near Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was closed due to uncontrollable floodingWater inflows were first encountered during routine mining in 1975 at the south boundary of the mine lease. Underground grouting and construction of bulkheads limited the flo but did not completely stop it. Subsequent seismic surveys showed that the mine had approached the edge of a large collapse structure in which the salt and potash had been partly dissolved and removed by groundwater.In 1986, the small flow into the mine started to grow. Despite renewed grouting, the flood increased and outstripped pump capacity. The grouting program temporarily slowed the inflow but was unable to stop it. Eventually, from seismic and drilling evidence, it became clear that the water source was an extensive system of vertical fractures which would be impossible to seal by drilling and grouting from underground. A new plan to install 14 bulkheads underground would have sealed the water source from the rest of the mine but the construction program could not be completed before rapidly increasing inflow threatened to fill the mine. The underground mine was closed and a new solution mine started in 1988."

The successful `marriage' between a company seeking to raise funds to develop a project and their financiers calls for a strong mutual understanding of each other's needs. For a company attempting to raise funding, the alternative methods are ever expanding. The optimum method will vary depending on the financial position, risk/reward outlook of the company and the strength of the project for which development capital is being sought. It is likely that small mining companies will need to raise equity funds for advancing projects to the development stage. At that time, they will probably still require a reasonable level of shareholder equity to meet the requirements of banks and other parties to cover potential cost over-runs on the project and feasibility costs. Larger companies, however, are likely to find it much easier and cheaper to raise debt from banks. When evaluating companies and projects for funding, banks will pay particular attention to the quality and experience of management in developing similar projects and it may be necessary for some companies to retain the services of outside consultants. Before a project needs funding, companies should meet with potential financiers to develop relationships to select and ensure a smooth transaction to funding in the future.

The underground mining evolution for block cave mines in Chile and worldwide has made important strides in the last decades. Nonetheless, reserves determination in the initial stages of these types of projects—mainly for long-term planning—is not studied in as much detail as it should be, especially regarding the impact on the final value of the enterprise. Today, the first estimation of the size of a block cave mine, typically expressed in tons, tends to determine very large footprints and ore bodies. The resulting large-scale mine is obtained by applying the marginal cut-off grade (COG) to determine reserves. Yet, in many cases, it is possible to obtain an equal or higher benefit, extracting fewer reserves in less time, with a smaller active area, which significantly reduces the project’s uncertainty. To explore scenarios obtained by applying a higher marginal COG in the initial phases of the project, the Hill of Value methodology is used to estimate the net present value (NPV) in relation to the production rate and the COG. However, the application of this methodology considers certain simplifications that generate results which are not completely satisfactory in specific cases. This paper suggests an improvement of this method to obtain more reliable results regarding determination of a COG profile that will optimize the NPVof a block-cave project. The methodology was developed and applied in a massive polymetallic deposit with zinc, lead, and silver mineralization, corresponding to a real block caving project. The methodology provides NPV results that differ by approximately 15% in comparison to the real mine plan, while also being considerably simpler and faster to calculate. In summary, the proposed methodology provides a reasonable and fast procedure to estimate higher than marginal COG that increases the NPV of block cave mine projects.

Steady increases in longwall production have required operators to apply greater quantities of ventilating air in an effort to control and dilute respirable dust. Significant increases in shearer speeds necessitate that longwall supports also be advanced at a faster rate. Both of these factors may contribute to overall respirable dust levels on the longwall face because as supports are lowered and advanced, broken material falling from the top of the canopy is entrained directly into the air stream. To address this issue, the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory collected respirable dust samples from four longwall faces to characterize shield-generated dust. This paper investigates the influence of air velocity and shield advance rates on respirable dust levels. Also discussed are engineering controls currently used to reduce shield dust and alternative controls being investigated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

The Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine concentrations of toxic gases and liquids, and smoke-particle diameters and diameter-concentrations evolved during degradation of PVC-derived brattice with and without nylon-woven fabrics, fiberglass, cotton, and jute brattices, and other mine materials. The samples were exposed in a 20-L chamber at temperatures of 1500 to 4500 C, with a chamber airflow of 10 L/min; 27.3 cm3/s of which was directed into a submicrometer-particle detector-analyzer. During the degradation of PVC-derived brattice, large concentrations of hydrogen chloride (TLV, 5 ppm; STEL, 100 ppm) evolved at a temperature as low as 2000 C. The minimum toxic load of 3.1 mg or 40 ppm in 50 L of dilution air, with O.l~g weight loss, may be reached at a mine face with 314,000 L of dilution air, at the 5th min, during which less than 1 kg of brattice undergoes combustion. Fiberglass, cotton, and jute brattices, pine wood dust, and coal dust showed small concentrations of carbon monoxide evolving during early stages of combustion. Hydrogen cyanide gas evolved from the PVC-derived, nylon-reinforced brattice; at a later stage of combustion, large concentrations pf carbon monoxide and dense smoke evolved from all PVC-derived brattices. Experiments to characterize smoke particles showed that marked differences exist in particle diameter-concentrations among the materials.

Foundations for the Sohio Corporate Headquarters in downtown Cleveland have column loads of 11,400 kips, which increase to 15,000 kips with wind loading. An extensive exploratory program was conducted and comprehensive studies made to select the economically dependable support for the 46-story structure. A test on bond or socket friction for the caissons has usable values.
