So many emergencies that crop up in mining necessitate a departure from ordinary methods that the writer has been led to illustrate a few of the examples that have come under his notice during a somewhat lengthy career; and as most of the methods illustrated are certainly outside the ordinary, it may be hoped that while to many they may convey little that is new, to the larger number some acceptable information may be gleaned whenever the occasion calls for it. Experience has shown that there can be no hard and fast rule in mine timbering that will fit the varying- necessities of different localities, and the engineer must divest his mind of all prejudices that his practice of any particular system or systems may have induced, and must direct his attention to the character of the local timber and its fitness or otherwise for the purpose he has in view. Fortunate indeed are the man and mine that can claim an abundance of good and cheap mining timber it simplifies, oftentimes, what would be, under unfavourable timber conditions, a difficult problem. In many parts of the States there is either none or at best a scrub if the latter, he has to either pigstye, balk, or bulkhead, if his ground will permit; if, not, and the necessary timber has to be imported, then some system of recovering his timber and using it over and over again may be possible. As an illustration of this, Fig-s. Nos. I and 2 show a method applied to the copper deposits of the LyellTharsis, Tasmania. Computer applications are ideally suited to the day to day operations of grade control and short term planning on a mine site. By refining this part of the operation there is scope to increase profits by more accurately predicting ore grade and tonnage, and allowing the mining engineer more flexibility in his approach to scheduling. Large numbers of blasthole or ditchwitch samples need to be processed in a fast and efficient manner, and stored in a database for future reference. The mining engineer has to calculate tonnages and subdivide the blast or digging area into mineable areas of waste, low and high grade ore. New grade and tonnage information must be used by the mining engineer to update his short term plan. Answers must be obtained quickly and efficiently, but a high level of individual input is necessary in order that maximum use is made of the information. Geostatistical analysis of samples can be used to refine the interpolation techniques. Reconciliation between the original grade model, the newly sampled area, and the final product should be monitored continually.

O emprego de trabalho mecânico em ligas metálicas associado a aplicações de tratamentos térmicos estão entre os principais métodos para se conseguir alcançar aumento de resistência mecânica e manutenção de boa ductilidade. Este estudo busca avaliar a correlação entre deformação a frio, tratamento térmico, microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas da liga Ti35Nb2,5Sn. Para isso realizou-se laminação a frio empregando níveis de redução equivalentes a 70%, 80% e 90%. Em seguida, as amostras foram analisadas por meio das técnicas de microscopia ótica, difração de raios X e microdureza Vickers. Na sequência, tratamentos térmicos de envelhecimento foram aplicados em diferentes tempos para cada nível de deformação e os mesmos parâmetros foram avaliados. Observou-se significativo aumento de dureza após etapa de envelhecimento e as análises por metalografia e difração de raios X evidenciaram a presença de fases metaestáveis na matriz beta..

Effective land-use planning requires accurate knowledge of mineral resource potential. Mineral companies during reconnaissance exploration, feasibility investigations and mine development also use this type of analysis. The Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences is undertaking a two-year project reviewing the resource potential of the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Spatial prospectivity models have been developed as part of this resource assessment process, using computer based statistical pattern recognition techniques to delineate areas that are prospective for mineral deposits and to test deposit genesis models. Digital GIS data-sets of mineral occurrence were correlated against geology and exploration information. The distribution of mesotherrnal shear zone gold deposits in the Reefton Goldfield, were examined against geological data-sets from both the regional (QMAP) and local prospect-scale mapping. Weights of evidence analysis generated a correlation matrix that highlights relationships and degrees of association that might otherwise not normally be recognised.   Mesothermal shear zone gold deposits have strong positive spatial correlations with Greenland Group host rocks and areas with moderate to high quartz vein densities; moderate-strong positive correlation with regions <500 m from folds, with regions <600 m from faults and five to eight kilometres from granite contacts; moderate correlations with Ntrending fault and fold segments; and no/weak/poor correlations with fault intersections, fold-fault intersections, bends in regional structures and magnetic and radiometric data. The regional and prospect scale data sets give different results, with the more detailed prospect scale mapping giving generally better correlations. This emphasises the value of detailed geological mapping in the exploration process.   Maps generated by prospectivity modelling consistently highlighted areas of known mineralisation and generate targets where follow-up investigation is warranted. The prospectivity per unit area provides a measurable value that should change as new information comes to hand and, in addition to highlighting targets, can be used to measure the impact of increased exploration expenditure and assess the effectiveness of exploration investment.

Molten zinc, condensed from zinc vapor, was used by the Federal Bureau of Mines to leach aluminum from an aluminum-silicon alloy made by carbothermic reduction of silicious aluminum ores. Zinc requirements were minimized by re-fluxing condensed zinc in a low-pressure, Soxhlet-type distillation unit. The minimum ratio of zinc used to aluminum in the crude alloy was approximately 2:1. When the system pressure was reduced from atmospheric pressure to 100 microns or less, the rate of aluminum extraction increased by a factor of 20. Leaching rates were much higher when the zinc vapor was condensed directly on the crude alloy than when molten zinc was passed over the alloy in the absence of appreciable zinc vapors. Observations indicated higher extraction efficiencies from crude alloys containing greater amounts of iron. Complete extraction was obtained with negligible loss of zinc. Assuming complete removal of zinc, the aluminum products will contain 1 to 6 percent silicon and about 0.5 percent iron plus titanium. The leached crude-alloy residue is a highly friable spongelike material containing about 80 percent silicon, several percent iron and titanium, with the remainder aluminum. This extraction method has been patented (Patent 2,810,637) and assigned to the Government. Research and development investigations are continuing at the College Park Metallurgy Research Center.

In the design of a modem mill, a stockpile storage system for raw and/or semi-processed ore has become almost indispensable. This paper discusses the benefits of such stockpile storage as well as the various types of belt conveyor stockpiling units available. Particular attention is given to large radial stackers since they offer the greatest flexibility. Stacker control systems and accessory equipment are briefly discussed. Various alternative reclaiming arrangements for stockpiles are reviewed and a discussion of the advantages and drawbacks of each arrangement is included.

In engineering design of operator?s compartments, in underground mining equipment, ergonomics principles are often neglected or not given the full recognition they deserve. This paper defines ergonomics, applies it to machinery in an underground mining environment and describes the ergonomics analysis undertaken during the design phase of an EJC extra-low-profile mining loader. Encompassing the design of the operator?s compartment of this new loader, this paper illustrates the importance of ergonomics principles within the collective design process, ensuring that it is fully integrated into the design approach. An ultimate aim of this study is to ensure that all future designs follow this route to guarantee not only the outcome of a highly efficient, cost-effective and productive machine but that it is also takes the human factor into account, not only in maintenance but also in operation. Maximizing comfort will have the ultimate outcome of actually increasing productivity.

GENERAL conditions in the lead industry have registered a distinct improvement. The first signs of a strengthening market were found in an increasing demand for scrap. There is keen competition for old battery plates both by large and small dealers. The large operator smelts them either alone or in combination with ores or other lead-bearing material, giving an antimonial lead for which there is brisk demand. The small operator usually has three alternatives. He may simply melt out the metallics in a kettle at low temperature, giving an antimonial lead and a pulverulent lead oxide; he may fuse under oxidizing conditions, giving a soft lead and lead-antimony slag; or he may fuse under reducing conditions, giving a relatively low-grade antimonial lead and a low-antimony slag. In each case the metal product is used or sold, and the dross or slag sold to a large smelter. It will be interesting to see what the final outcome will be of this situation which is generally conceded to be unsatisfactory.

The tailings are waste from mineral processing operations. The type of tailings of iron ore processing are classified into sandy tailings and mud. Already the overburden are showing significant levels of useful mineral. Both iron ore`s waste have in your composition phyllosilicates/clay that indicates the potential for use in niche markets as paving and cement. According to several studies, there are various technologies in bench and pilot levels that could be used on a large scale but there is not an economic environment, tax, regulatory and tax set. Many of these technologies are associated with the reuse of tailings and overburden in construction. All these factors influence for that so many initiatives remain in search formats and cannot advance to the new business format. There is no way to set goals of reuse of this waste, as already occurs in China, if there is not a fiscal, tax and economic structure to support such measures. The way to foster and ensure that reuse of tailings and overburden is an incentive for promoting a culture of circular economy that would allow the emergence of an ecosystem between the private, public and Government sectors with the objective of accelerating and subsidize the entire network of reuse of this waste. The closure of the mine could be the tool used to ensure and boost this ecosystem of reutilization to align it with the vocation of the area of the mining law. Following this model, the end of the mining activity could provide a financial return to the local population, a more effective environmental compensation and a reduction in costs related to the closure of the mine. Many attempts have been made during the last 40 years to evaluate the performance of gravity separation equipement, that is, the effectiveness with which light and heavy particles are separated. The most comprehensive treatment of the subject was made by Cerchar at the 1st International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris in 1950. The methods suggested by the Conference were accepted and very widely used in the last two decades. This paper discusses an improved method of evaluation in the light of the now-accepted standard presentation. The float-and-sink analysis of the product is presented on a Gaussian distribution curve, resulting in an easier visualization of the inherent difficulties of separation. The ogives of the distribution curve me then plotted, giving a quantitative measure of the deviation from perfect separation as an error distance instead of an error area. Illustrations of the new method are given both for gravel and for coal preparation, but the content is valid and applicable to other types of minerals which are separated by gravity methods. Many attempts had been made during the last forty years to evaluate the performance of heavy-media separation (HMS) equipment, that is, the effectiveness with which floats and sinks are separated.'-' The most comprehensive treatment of the subject was made by Cerchar at the 1st International Conference on Coal Preparation held in Paris. 6 The primary aim was the thorough understanding of the mechanism of separation and the unified presentation of data on gravity separation so that the evaluation and comparison of washery performance could be made from all over the world. No strict overall standardization has been achieved, but after the conference a more or less uniform presentation of performance was accepted, which, during the last two decades, has been very widely used. In this paper, illustration of the old methods and an improved method of evaluation will be given. HEAVY-MEDIA SEPARATION (HMS) PERFORMANCE CRITERIA In the ideal HMS process, all material lower in density than the specific gravity of separation (SGS) would be recovered as floats and all material of higher density would appear as sinks. In order to evaluate the misplaced material, the washery products are tested at the density at which the washing unit is operated. The original type of plot1,7, 8 is shown in Fig 1; this was developed primarily for coal cleaning units. The curve for raw coal represents the cumulative percentages of sink material. The refuse curve is also plotted as a cumulative sink, the percentages being expressed in terms of raw coal. This diagrammatic representation of the results of washing units has the merit of easy visual observance of the degree of separation obtained. The error areas (cross-hatched) are a measure of the amount of misplaced material and therefore they can be used to characterize the quality of separation. The ideal and actual separating performance between floats and sinks can be best seen from the partition curve developed by Tromp,2 where the ordinate is the percentage recovery of the sinks, and the abscissa is the specific gravity (Fig. 2). It can be seen from the shape of the curve that as the SGS is approached, the proportion of material reporting to the improper product increases rapidly. In fact, the SGS can be defined as the density of the material in the feed that is distributed equally between float-and-sink products. When the upper half of the curve is inverted, a shape similar to that of a Gaussian error distribution curve is obtained and therefore the analysis of gravity separation may be carried out by using the law of probability. The shape of the curve in Fig. 2 is determined partly by the density composition of the feed, and partly by the sharpness with which the unit separates floats from the sinks.9, l0

1.1 Biological Process Description Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) has developed and in partnership with their clients in the mining industry has applied biological remediation processes for detoxification of spent ore and process solutions from heap leach operations. Contaminants that are treated to mine closure levels or drinking water standards include cyanides (weak acid dissociable and total cyanides), thiocyanate, nitrates and heavy metals. Biological processes are both site-specific and ore-specific processes. PSI specializes in isolating indigenous microorgan­isms from spent ore and process solutions and augments them in the laboratory for enhanced bio-detoxification in the field. Bioaugmentation in the lab is a key to successful heap bio-detox in the field. In PSI's bioaugmentation processes native microorganisms are isolated from the spent ore environment and are tested for contaminant remediation capacity. A majority of the indigenous microbes will be tolerant of the spent ore environment but will not contribute to contaminant metabolism. Indigenous enrichment or biostimulation of these non-working microbes by adding trace nutrients can competitively inhibit the working microbes. For this reason PSI focuses on the bioaugmentation process where non-working microbes are discarded and the working population is enhanced through stress, mutation and exogenous enrichment before it is re-introduced to the heap and process solutions.

"INTRODUCTIONSeafloor massive sulfides (SMS) along mid-ocean ridges are often seen as a possible future contribution to a secure metal supply for global human needs. A growing interest over the past few years resulted in six national exploration licenses and one application pending, covering 10,000 km2 each, that have been brought before the UN International Seabed Authority (ISA) since 2011. Each contractor has to explore these 10,000 km2 within the 15-year runtime of the contract. However, the need to define areas that are not economically interesting is more pressing, as 50% of the 100 license blocks have to be returned to ISA after only eight years - hopefully areas that do not contain large and economically interesting SMS deposits. Current geochemical prospecting technologies, however, have mainly been developed for the search for active hydrothermal systems (e.g. hydrothermal vents and associated black smokers) that can easily be traced through physical and chemical anomalies in the water column (temperature, chemical variations of elements such as Mn, Fe, redox potential, and/or the particle concentration in the water column). Such plume surveys have been a primary tool for exploration of SMS systems, but they only identify active, and therefore mostly young and small hydrothermal systems. In a recent high-resolution AUV survey performed within the EU-FP7 funded project “Blue Mining”, we covered 47 km2 along the TAG segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to test exploration methodology for fast and reliable exploration of larger areas of the seafloor for inactive seafloor massive sulfide occurrences using the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) “Abyss”."

Reduction interactions in solid phases are widespread and occur in most complex metallurgical processes. Among these processes, reactions between oxides and carbon have a special importance. The authors conducted experiments for comparison of reduction by different reducing agents of impregnated chromite ores, in which grains of the reducible chromite spinel are isolated from direct contact with the reducing agent by layers of non-ore material. The results of the experiments have revealed that the beginning of reduction is preceded by thermal and impurity order-disorder transformation of the oxide lattice whilst the transformation of the oxide lattice into the metal lattice takes place as a result of removal of oxygen anions from the zone of metal germ nucleation. Since anions are charge carriers, increase of their mobility can be monitored by changes in electrical conductivity of oxides. Respective measurements of electrical resistance of ores of different metals and a number of pure refractory oxides under heating have indicated that the beginning of reduction coincides with the time of drastic (tens of thousands times) increase of conductivity of the oxides. Besides, the temperature of the beginning of carbon-thermal reduction is in line with the Tammann temperature, i.e. the temperature of transition from the predominantly surface diffusion to volume diffusion. Segregation of metals from the oxide lattice occurs as a result of merging of anion vacancies with defect electrons on defects of the oxide lattice. The transformation of the oxide lattice into the metal lattice requires a certain concentration of anion vacancies and inflow of electrons from the reducing agent to the site of metal segregation. Such inflow has no difficulties due to the mixed anion-electron nature of high-temperature conductivity of oxides. Thus, the reduction is not determined by oxygen diffusion, it is determined by oxygen vacancies diffusion whose speed exceeds the speed of oxygen diffusion by orders of magnitude. This determines that the kinetics of reduction considerably exceeds the kinetics of oxidation at similar temperatures since oxidation proceeds by means of mass transfer of oxygen through the layer of the generated oxide.

The Para-Eco Incinerator Ash Processing System for cleaning slag has been developed after a seven-year pilot plant study. The major part of the system is an electric furnace heated to 1773 K. The feed material consists of a municipal solid waste incinerator ash mixture containing a reducing agent of a coke and an inorganic flux of calcium and magnesium. With this furnace system, three kinds of products are produced. They are an inorganic molten salt that is slag, molten iron alloy absorbing non-ferrous metals, and fly ash. Due to the reducing atmosphere in the furnace, the slag does not contain any metal components as well as chlorine components just like natural rock and/or aggregate. A retreatment plant modifies this slag into a practically useful aggregate. The plant consists of a slow cooling step for crystallizing the slag as well as a water granulation step. The iron components in the ash are reduced to molten iron droplets, which concentrate at the furnace bottom. The non-ferrous metal components such as copper, chromium, and others are absorbed into the molten iron but not into the molten slag. Volatile metals such as lead, zinc, cadmium and others as well as sodium, potassium, and chlorine go back into the fly ash. A solvent extraction method and/or other appropriate procedures can be used to extract the metal components from this fly ash.

I have studied his last paper as thoroughly as the limited time since I received it would adruit, and have drawn some concluvions which I will first state, and then attempt to demonstrate. The kinetic leaching behaviour of a low-grade surface gold ore and a high-grade reef ore were evaluated to determine the achievable gold recovery from these ores and particularly mixtures of these ores. The reef ore material has a head grade of 13.40 g/t with a relative standard deviation of 3%, and the unprocessed surface ore material a head grade of 0.43 g/t with a relative standard deviation of 15.6%. It is concluded that the kinetic leaching behaviour of these free milling gold ores during cyanidation, is not influenced by mixing of reef and surface ore material. No statistically significant relationship exists between the achievable recovery by direct cyanidation and the head grade of the material fed. No ideal ratio of surface ore to reef ore could be established. It is recommended that these materials should be processed simultaneously to minimize the costs, security risks, and losses incurred in transportation.

"Significant resources have been spent throughout the years in the investigation of production of aluminum by carbothermic reduction. Due to the technological challenges involved, the efforts have not yet resulted in a commercial process. An initiative to overcome issues that prevented previous attempts to succeed was taken by Alcoa through the Advanced Reactor Process. The research program has resulted in technical developments which have resolved many of the previous issues. The knowledge about the process has continuously improved through physical and computer modeling as well as by experimentation at various scales. The technical achievements together with improved process understanding have resulted in a reactor design able to continuously operate the process for several weeks at the time, with hundreds of kilograms of alloy in every tap.IntroductionThe Hall-Heroult process has since its invention in the late 19th century, been essentially the only process used for commercial production of primary aluminum. The effect of sample storage in argon and in air on the kinetics of oxidation of pyrite from a coal source was studied using accelerated-weathering tests that were performed in laboratory columns. Prior to the weathering tests, the samples were crushed, ground and stored for various periods of time in either argon or air. The test results showed a dramatic difference in the rate of oxidation of the aged samples. The interpretation of the differences was based on the hypothesis that the aging of pyrite led to the formation of surface coatings that changed with time. "Dry" oxidation produced surface coatings that had properties different from those produced by "wet" oxidation. The significance of these results to pyrite/reagent interactions during flotation and in evaluating the acid-mine-drainage potential of pyritic waste materials is discussed.

Discussion of the paper of ENRIQUE HAUSER, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 110, February, 1916, pp. 521 to 534. GEORGE A. BURRELL, Pittsburgh, Pa. Mr. Hauser determined the influence of inert gases on the properties of fire-damp mixtures, and one might take some issue with his work on the effect of hydrogen, on those mixtures. It is valuable information to have, but as far as the practical application of it goes, it is not of much significance, because one does not find it in mines, at least not in any appreciable amount. Ethylene is formed in considerable quantities as a product of heat reaction, but normally, in the coal mines, as a result of a great many analyses we have made at the Bureau of Mines, we cannot say that ethylene is a combustible gas found in the fire-damp in coal mines.

O setor Petróleo e Gás Natural vem tendo enormes gastos com as paradas de manutenção. Estes gastos estão relacionados à degradação sofrida por seus equipamentos de refino devido à corrosão. Uma possível solução seria a utilização de novas ligas de aço inoxidável ferrítico com elevados percentuais de molibdênio, o que teoricamente favoreceria um aumento da resistência à corrosão. No entanto, pelo fato dessas ligas serem aplicadas na condição como soldada mudanças microestruturais significativas podem ser geradas, além de considerar o fato da solda das ligas em estudo ser realizada com material dissimilar, e a diferença existente entre o metal de adição e a região afetada pelo calor (ZAC) pode propiciar ao surgimento do fenômeno eletroquímico conhecido como pilha galvânica. Portanto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar o comportamento corrosivo na solda dissimilar de duas novas ligas de aço inoxidável ferrítico com diferentes teores de cromo e um elevado teor de molibdênio, ambas com adição de superliga de níquel, verificando a influência da pilha. O resultado da soldagem foi avaliado através de exames metalográficos e ensaios eletroquímicos. As micrografias do metal de adição utilizado na soldagem das ligas mostraram que o mesmo possui uma microestrutura dendrítica e os gráficos obtidos dos ensaios de Polarização Potenciodinâmica Cíclica não reproduziram para as ligas soldadas, o que foi melhor analisado observando os resultados dos ensaios de forma separada, para as regiões que constituem a solda das ligas, o metal de adição e ZAC. Sendo possível verificar a existência de uma maior resistência a corrosão no metal de adição.
