Eight blasts were fired in a 2-1/2-ft bench in the Stewartville member of the Galena Limestone formation in an aggregate quarry near Stewartville, Minn. The shots were dimensionally proportional to production-size bench blasts and were about 5 to 10 percent of full scale. The effects of site, timing of initiation, and burden-to-spacing ratio were studied in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial experiment, using three boreholes, caw;, containing a 1/2-in charge diameter of high-density ammonia dynamite, in each blast. Detonation velocity measurements indicated that the dynamite detonated satisfactorily in the 1/2-in charge diameter. The effects of the three experimental variables were analyzed by weight for the percentage of oversized material produced and for size distributions determined by screening the entire muckpiles. The bench faces were painted before each shot in an effort to determine the origin of the oversized material. The square pattern (burden and spacing = 15 in) produced finer overall fragmentation and less oversized material than the rectangular pattern (burden = 15 in; spacing = 22-1/2 in). Sites 1 and 2 were about ft apart. Although site 2 produced slightly better overall fragmentation than site 1, the amounts of oversized material produced showed no significant difference. The timing of initiation (instantaneous or delayed) did not significantly influence the overall fragmentation or the amount of oversized material produced.

The purpose of this article is to analyze critically and quantitatively the effect of chemical equilibrium on the overall rates of fluid-solid reactions. It is shown through a mathematical analysis that a reaction with a small equilibrium constant (a positive standard free energy of reaction) is more likely to be rate-controlled by pore diffusion or mass transfer than a reaction with a large equilibrium constant. The overall reaction rate of the former also tends to be slow. Furthermore, the apparent activation energy of such a reaction approaches the standard enthalpy of reaction (M-f'), rather than the true activation energy of the chemical reaction. The Law of Additive Reaction Times developed by the author is shown to apply to equilibrium-limited fluid-solid reactions and to be useful in quantitatively analyzing the behavior of such reactions.

Experimental petrology may be used to accurately constrain PTX conditions in order to calibrate and understand geologic processes. This method may be used to answer postulated questions, by recreating known geologic conditions and observing changes in the experimental charges. The purpose of this project was to determine the eutectic composition and temperature in the ternary system PbS-FeS-ZnS ¦ (Ag2S), at ambient and elevated pressures and elucidate if the sulfides of the Broken Hill orebody may have been partially molten during highgrade (granulite facies) metamorphism. The study determined the eutectic temperature and composition in the system PbS-FeS-ZnS to be 800¦2¦C and 62.5% PbS, 30.5%FeS, 7% ZnS respectively, at one atmosphere, and the eutectic temperature at 27 kbars was found to be 960¦C¦10¦C, with a eutectic composition enriched in ZnS relative to the one atmosphere eutectic. the addition of lwt.% Ag2S to the system depresses the eutectic temperature to 772¦2¦C at 1 atmosphere and below 810¦5¦C at 5 kbars. The conditions of peak metamotphism for the cental and southern areas of the Broken Hill Block, New South Wales, Australia , lie above the solidus of the PbS-FeS-ZnS-Ag2S system, strongly suggesting that partial melting occurred in the orebody.

Alunite has been utilized as raw materials for producing alumina and potassium sulfate fertilizer in Russia for many years. In the United States, this mineral has not been commercially processed though reserves of 5 to 10 billion tons of alunite ore have been estimated. Major constituents of these ores include quartz and alunite. The minerals are finely intergrown and liberation occurs below 10 microns. Adequate separation techniques for such fine particles have not been developed. A new method for the beneficiation of alunite ore is proposed in this study. 'Ibis method utilizes a small amount of fine magnetite upon which the liberated quartz is selectively flocculated. The co-flocculated magnetite and quartz are then separated from the alunite in a high gradient magnetic separator. Clean products, e.g. an alunite concentrate of 90% grade with 80% recovery, has been obtained from an Utah ore. Techniques for the selective co-flocculation of magnetite and quartz, the separation of the carried quartz, and the recovery of magnetite after separation are discussed.

Concentrations of minerals between 3.5 and 5 specific gravity such as ilmenite, rutile and zircon in large accumulations of sand constitute "heavy mineral" placers. Two fundamentally different modes of formation characterize "trap" and "bed" placer variants. Smaller and generally higher grade trap placers form during sediment erosion or reworking. Because of their smaller size, they rarely yield economic heavy mineral deposits. They become economic, either if they contain more valuable "heavies" such as gold, or, if they occur within or near much larger but lower grade bed placers. Bed placers form during sediment accumulation episodes in any environment and lithofacies where mineral supply and fluid dynamics are favorable. Three heavy mineral deposits are discussed to illustrate bed placer geology and how trap placers occur with and relate to them.

A good quality assurance program at a coal mine or power plant is accurate, timely and consistent. The quality analysis is accurate due to a complete sampling of the coal stream loaded into the unit train. The sample analysis is accurate because standardized testing procedures are applied. Once an analysis is completed, the results must be communicated to the electric utility in a timely manner. The electric utility needs the results to better manage the coal inventory at its power plants. A quality assurance program can also help a mine deliver a consistent product to a utility's power plants. The importance of accuracy, timeliness and consistency are based on major changes that are taking place in the electric utility industry.

The exploration, geologist of necessity has to have a wide working knowledge of many specialties other than hiw own, First he has to use his own technical background to find a deposit,, of a mineral that is of interest, Once found, his problems are Just beginning, He then has to assume the role of an economist, an accountant, a mining engineer, a chemist, a metallurgist,, a salesman and what-have you, In the economic field, he must determine the marketability of either the ore or the refined mineral. He must gauge the supply and demand for the particular mineral he is interested in and make his best guess as to ultimate cash flow from a deposit over the estimated life of said deposit, He must then assume the role of a mining man and estimate cost of recovery, including an, evaluation of the most economic mining method, cost of supplies and labor, and again estimate a net cash flow. He must then determine amenability of ore to economic metallurgical methods, he must determine the legal status of the property involved and, after analysis of the specific situation, determine the best approach to a deal, After all of this he must sell it to the people who will put up the money and then put his deal together and sell it to the people who own the minerals, if that be necessary. Then he has to sit back, with crossed fingers and crossed legs wondering for some months, and in many cases even years, whether or not he is right. The expenditures required to open up a mine in this day of wild inflation are such that he has to be right, and the responsibilities are awesome.

"This is a report on the combined application of ""long-chain"" flocculants and classifier cyclones in the field of slimes treatment, with emphasis on the simultaneous thickening and clarifying of industrial effluents, at low cost. The principle of the process described below involves: (1) the formation of small floes of relatively great strength, by sequential dispersion and conditioning, with average floe size of about 1501 microns; (2) the floes being of sufficient strength to withstand the shearing forces operating within a cyclone and consequently behaving as solid particles with an equivalent diameter (Stokes) that exceeds the size cutpoint of the classifier cyclone; (3) the removal of flocculated solids by means of a classifier cyclone the size cutpoint of which permits effective separation of these solids from the water. Results of test work to date indicate that a broader use of cyclones in industry is possible with the above types of flocculants because the submicron particles and colloidal material are readily collected and clear water is produced, with the attendant advantages of compact construction and low cost that are characteristic of centrifugal separation. The process generally permits classifier cyclones of medium throughput capacity (e.g. 12-in. diam.) to be used for clarifying effluents that contain minus 10-micron particles."

The topic of the relationships between energy and particle size has had two very active periods -the first in the early thirties, when the relative merits of Rittinger's and Kick's proposals were vigorously debated; the second in the early fifties, when Bond's Third Theory was published. This second stage has produced several contributions that have provided a clearer picture of energy /size correlations in comminution. Derivations of a general relationship have been made from single-fracture experiments and from the rate of comminution, and both methods arrive at an equation of the type E = AK-11? The constant A in the equation may be regarded as a grindability parameter. In some respects, an understanding of the phenomena associated with comminution is still lacking, and research in this field should therefore be expanded. Experiments were undertaken to evaluate the flammability of typical noise abatement materials used to line the cab interior of mobile mining equipment. The experiments were conducted using three different experimental configurations: 1. A ventilated tunnel test. 2. A full-size cab test where the interior surfaces were lined with the sample material and then ignited near the floor using a methane-air burner. 3. Standard ASTM E-162 tests using a radiant panel test apparatus. This paper describes the tests and presents the results obtained for 15 to 20 different materials of various chemical compositions and thickness. With one exception, materials that did not exhibit flame spread in the tunnel test also performed well in the full-scale cab test. All materials that had passed only a small-scale flammability test, such as SAE J369, failed dramatically in all three of the above test configurations. With one exception, all materials that performed well in the full-scale cab test had flame spread indices < 25, based upon the ASTM E-162 results. The lone exception had an ASTM E-162 flame spread index of 68. With regard to samples that failed the full-scale cab test, the carbon monoxide levels within the cab reached lethal concentrations in the range of 1.8% to 3.8% within 2 minutes from ignition of the sample—dramatically illustrating the severe fire environment that can result within the cab space.

A theoretical radiation mine model, suitable for underground uranium nines, has been investigated. In this model, the rate of ventilation and/or the radon (thoron) gas emanation from mine walls are time-dependent. Several cases of practical interest have been investigated including sinusoidal, linear, exponential, stepwise, or a combination of two or more of the above. Analytical solutions were obtained for the time-dependent radon (thoron) gas emanation rate. However, because of the extreme analytical complexity of the solutions corresponding to the time-dependent ventilation rate case, numerical solutions were found using a special Runge-Kutta procedure and the Hamming&apos;s modified predictor-corrector method for the solution of linear initial-value problems. The mine model makes provisions for losses of radioactivity, other than by ventilation and radioactive decay, by, say, plate-out on mine walls, and by other mechanisms. Radioactivity data, i.e., radon, thoron, and their progeny. obtained with the above mine model for a number of ventilation and emanation conditions, are presented. Experimental data obtained in an inactive stope of an underground uranium mine for a time-dependent air flow case are shown. Air flow conditions (ventilation rate) were determined by tracer gas techniques using SF6.

"Heavy metals contamination in aqueous systems can be found in a variety of industries, in particularly mining, metal processing, finishing and plating. Water containing more than 0.5 ppm heavy metal considered as a toxic due to harmful effects on health. The major techniques employed for heavy metal removal from industrial wastewaters include precipitation, reduction, ion-exchange, and adsorption. Adsorption is a heavy metal removal method for aqueous systems. As a common adsorbent, activated carbon has been used in treatment but it is ineffective on some elements. Thus, there has been a research for developing highly effective and selective adsorbents. In this study the adsorption of lead and arsenic ions on to coal waste and red mud waste was studied. The experimental parameters were determined as pH, equilibrium time and the initial concentrations, activation by heat treatment and the blend of adsorbents. According to their adsorption capabilities, red mud was found to adsorb lead and arsenic ion with high efficiency but coal waste did not adsorb arsenic ion. However the binary adsorptions of these ions were enhanced the adsorption efficiencies. In addition the blend of coal waste and red mud affected the adsorption efficiency. INTRODUCTION As a result of rapidly developing industry and excessive use of water resources, the need of clean water and wastewater management appear as a problem. Wastewater recycling activities and researches come to the fore for an effective use of wastewater. Recycling of wastewater, which contains heavy metals harmful to the environment and human, is a difficult process. Heavy metals are generally divided into three categories: toxic metals, precious metals, radionuclides. Wastewaters from various industries, containing heavy metals, are the main polluters of water and soil. Although their toxic structures, heavy metals are used extensively in industry as they have technological significance. Usually mining industry, metal industry and industrial organizations produce heavy metal containing wastewaters (Volesky 1990, Ting and Lawson 1991, Bishop 2002)."

Large deposits present computational challenges to todayÆs commercial orebody modelling systems that are based on conventional block models. We describe a system that is specifically engineered to model and visualise large deposits. Central to the system is linear octree encoding of conventional block models and real-time conversion of three-dimensional (3D) meshes to linear octrees. We provide both methodological treatment and practical experience in implementing such a system. A commercial implementation is also presented to demonstrate the validity of the approach.

As part of the addition of eight new combined cycle generating units at the Florida Power & Light Sanford Plant, 2,129 piles were to be installed. The existing plant elements were supported on driven piles, and the variation in pile lengths during previous work, as well as available subsurface information, indicated a complex stratigraphy. At the request of the owner, the designer/construction manager developed a program to evaluate the use of pressure-grouted displacement piles. A pre-design load test program in areas that represented the apparent extremes in subsurface conditions indicated that the system was feasible; however, the presence of existing features that were to be demolished later precluded the clear delineation of subsurface conditions in advance of construction. A contract was negotiated with the pile installer based on the best estimate of potential pile lengths, with modifications to pile lengths to be set based on additional exploration. A total of 52 cone penetration soundings and five load tests were performed immediately prior to and during pile installation to establish correlations between the CPT data and pile performance. Pile depths were set based on these correlations. Pile installation was completed 6 weeks ahead of schedule and 15 percent under the original budget estimate. This paper documents the evaluation of pressure-grouted displacement piles as an emerging technology, and illustrates the benefits of a close working relationship between the owner, designer, and pile contractor at a site with variable subsurface conditions.

At 9.45 pm on Thursday, 12 July&nbsp;1962 glass began to flow in an endless stream from a massive melting tank in a new Whangarei factory and a vital new industry was born û right on schedule. It wasn&apos;t good glass. It was ridged. It cracked. It rippled. It obstinately refused to emerge upstairs in the cutting room in one solid continuous sheet. But all through the night, drawing speeds were adjusted, temperatures changed. And on Friday morning, at 8:30, it finally came through as sheet û not perfect as yet, but sheet glass all the same. The rest is only a matter of time. Unfortunately, the buoyant enthusiasm displayed by the founders of the sheet glass industry in New Zealand, and the technical expertise of their European consultants, failed to bring the glass quality up to commercially acceptable standards and within six months, the company was in receivership. Taking over the role of producing New Zealand&apos;s sheet glass requirements, New Zealand Window Glass Company was formed as a partnership between two companies with long experience in sheet glass manufacture û Pilkington Brothers (NZ) Limited and Australian Consolidated Industries Limited. This paper sets out to identify the raw material requirements and controls necessary for the successful manufacture of sheet glass, and the availability and supply of suitable materials for use at Whangarei.

E. P. Mathewson, Anaconda, Mont.—After hearing about the success of D. H. Browne with his furnaces, we in Anaconda decided we might venture into the field of pulverized coal for reverberatory smelting. We sent a delegation of investigators to see Mr. Browne and his work, and they returned, filled with enthusiasm, and said they would recommend it strongly.. We thereupon asked for an appropriation, and after some delay obtained the same and fitted up one furnace to use pulverized coal. We copied Mr. Browne&apos;s practice and his selection of machinery for drying and pulverizing coal; and we also copied the burner he used, which was a standard article on the market. We got an expert coal-dust machinery man to design our plant, and were very glad we did so as we avoided some of the unpleasantness that had been experienced at other plants through fires and minor explosions. I want to say, before describing our apparatus a little in detail, that we were quite familiar with the work of Mr. SÖrensen, the pioneer in the use of pulverized coal for copper smelting. Our attention had been called to it by Mr. Klepetko early in the game. And afterward we were familiar with the work done at Cananea by Mr. Shelby. We sent an expert to investigate the question 10 years ago. He examined the work of Mr. SÖrensen; and then went to the cement men and examined their work, and reported at great length that coal dust was the ideal fuel for them, as they took the ash from the coal and sold it as cement. He reported that coal-dust firing could not be made economical in reverberatory copper smelting, and his reasons were that a blanket of nonconducting material would cover the charge in a short time and insufficient heat would reach the charge proper, and we would have floaters over all our furnaces. The flues would be stopped by the dust that did not settle on the charge. We accepted that until our Irish friend got busy and showed us how to do it. Then we built a furnace which we thought was a slight improvement over Mr. Browne&apos;s. We put railroad tracks over our furnaces to draw the charge to the furnace. We had

Seismic investigations at pre-construction sites commonly are limited to obtaining velocities and thicknesses of subsurface intervals which are useful in estimating construction costs, but are sometimes difficult to apply to project designing. This paper shows through a case history of the San Bernardino Tunnel Intake Tower, a part of the California State Water Project, that dynamic rock properties and dynamic resonant frequencies can be determined and velocity models constructed from in situ field studies and that these are theoretically correct after simplifying assumptions are made. These data can be used to confirm and extend information obtained by conventional methods such as drilling and laboratory static testing.
