A new method has been developed for calculating flowing bottom hole pressure in a gas well, using as a basis the general energy equation. Fundamentally, the method shows that a plot of flowing pressure versus depth for a gas well can be represented as a series of incremental .straight lines, with the accuracy in-creasing as the number of increments increase. It is shown mathematically that for most cases the slope of the flowing pressure versus depth curve is essentially constant, in which case a single calculation based on surface conditions will yield acceptable results. In all cases studied no more than two iterations were required for very good accuracy, and in most cases only one iteration was necessary. Several example calculations are shown and the results are compared to other commonly used methods of calculating bottom hole pressures These examples show that the method provides answers which are at least as accurate as other methods usually used, and results in a considerable reduction in computation time.

Mining of the massive complex sulphides orebodies of Campo Pisano and San Benedetto (Southern Sardinia, Italy), dates back to before Christ, though their exploitation with modern technology was only resumed in the middle of the last century. The increasingly adverse economic conditions and the weakness of both country rock and mineralization were concurrent in forcing the Company's management to develop suitable high-productivity stoping methods. In the framework of a project fi- nanced in part by the Commission of the European Coranunities, and carried out in cooperation with the Universities of Cagliari (Italy) and Clausthal (Germany), a cemented backfill stoping method was developed. The concrete mix preparation and placement facil- ities, study of the cement mixes and endeavaa-s to optimize the methods are described. The monitoring system for measuring stress evolution within the emplaced backfill is illustrated together with the successful replacement of part of the Portland cement

The oil fields of Arkansas, all situated in the southern part of the State, have played an important part in the development of petroleum production in the northern coastal plain region of the Mid-Continent area. From the first discovery of oil in southwest Ouachita County in 1920 to December 31, 1930, a total of 480,167,5604/ barrels of crude petroleum has been produced from' this region. Development of the Arkansas fields proceeded rapidly after 1920. The El Dorado field was discovered in Union County in 1921. Drilling in Ouachita County resulted in the discovery of the Smackover field in 1922 and subsequently in the development of the whole southern area. To November 31, 1938, 6,4595/ producing wells had been drilled in 25 fields, aggregating 53,7356/ acres of proved territory in 6 counties. Peak annual production for the State was reached in 1925, when 80,823,7007/ barrels was produced, resulting largely from flush production from the Smackover field, which rose td an average of 444,9508/ barrel daily during that year. AT first sight, the platinum group of metals seem of little import to we, the people," although actually the life of the common man is much influenced by them; this influence is usually indirect, hence his lack of knowledge and interest. He generally associates platinum with high-class jewelry and lets it go at that. Were 11e to go deeper, he would find that platinum metals play their part in his food supply, his clothing. his health, his transportation, his home. And the technical man is in general only slightly better informed, for he usually does not realize how necessary platinum metals are in the manufacture of the many construction materials and chemical products with which he is acquainted. Certainly, our daily lives would be profoundly affected if platinum were suddenly to become unavailable.

The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments on one synthetic and three natural sandstone samples to investigate the effects of acoustic energy on the flow of brine in porous media. Ultrasonic energy at a frequency of 20 kc per second and an intensity of 55 watts per cm2 was irradiated in the direction of the fluid flow and in the opposite direction for distances of 1/2 and 2 inches between the vibrating device and the sample face and under conditions of suppressed and nonsuppressed cavitation. Forty tests were conducted: 32 with a pressure differential of 0.64 psi across the samples, 2 with 5 psi, and 6 with 15 psi. Acoustic waves altered the rate of flow of the brine through the samples, but this effect was observed only at low differential pressures and from a practical point of view was insignificant. As a result of irradiation, however, the samples exhibited reduced permeability. This reduction was probably caused by the shifting of solid particles dislodged by the acoustic waves.

[The accepted theory of acid formation in coal mines with the subsequent appearance of the acid in coal-mine drainage, is oxidation of iron pyrite and subsequent solution and hydrolysis of the iron sulphate formed. It has also been found that 5 gobbed sections and worked-out areas, where there is usually an abundance of iron pyrite-bearing, materials in contact with air, are the sections that make the most important contribution to the quantity of acid drainage. It would thus seem obvious that if oxygen can be kept out of contact with tae acid-forming materials in tie- sections mentioned the amount of acid in coal-mine drainage could be reduced markedly and corrosion problems with mine pumping equipment and general stream pollution mitigated thereby. Although the efficiency of the suggested remedy as been borne out by laboratory experiments6, it has appeared desirable to substantiate the laboratory work by field observations in so far as pertinent data are available. It has been difficult to learn of mines or sections of mines about to be sealed, whereby an actual comparison of the drainage before and after sealing can be made. In view of that difficulty it has been necessary to devote attention to a comparison of the character of the water from areas already sealed with that from open but otherwise comparable sections of the sane mine. Previous cork has shown that the acidity of drainage in different parts of the same mine may vary, but if it can be shown also that the water from sealed areas is with but fen exceptions less acid than the otherwise similar open sections of tae same mine, the laboratory finding will be supported in a practical gray. This report presents some of the evidence that has been obtained.]

Laboratory and field work on the use of wetting agents for suppression of colliery dust is described. Although the results were inconclusive they were not discouraging and further investigation is required. The use of certain wetting agents may constitute a healthhazard.INTRODUCTIONCoal dust presents explosion and health hazards to the coal mining industry. The problem of dust suppression is particularly acute where water alone is unsatisfactory for this purpose. When cylindrical powder compacts of nickelous oxide (NiO) are heated in an equilibrated stream of SO3, SO,, and 02, in the temperature range 500°to 800°c, tlickelous suljate (NiSO4) is formed as an adherent layer on the oxide. The reaction is diffusion-controlled, with an activation energy of 13 ± 3 kcal per mole. When cylindrical powder compacts of NiSO4 are heated in a stream of dry nitrogen in the temperature range 1000 0to 11500C, NiO is formed at a well-defined interface between the sulfate and oxide. The interjhce migrates into the sulfate at a constant rate at a constant temperature and gas flow. The reaction rate increases with increasing gas flow and decreases with increasing partial pressure of SO3 in the gas stream. Resolution of the partial-pressure data with a Lang-itzliir Adsorption Isothern suggests that about 80 pct of the NiO interface is covered with SO3. The heat of adsovption is about 68 kcal per mole. The activation energy of the decomposition process is 61 ± 3 kcal per mole. MOST of the work reported on the formation and decomposition of nickel sulfate is related to thermodynamics.1-3 No quantitative work has been reported on the decomposition process. The only kinetic work reported on the formation is that by Fletcher and shelef.4-6 whose main purpose was to study the effects of alkali metal sulfate additions on increasing the rate of nickel sulfate formation. They found that, in the absence of an additive, only small amounts of sulfate were formed and the kinetic data were difficult to interpret. However, they suggested that the sulfa-tion of nickel oxide is a diffusion-controlled process for which the activation energy is approximately 17 kcal per mole.6 In this paper, both the formation and decomposition reactions will be examined; and based on the effects of temperature, flow rate, interfacial area, and partial-pressure of sulfur trioxide, mechanisms and activation energies will be suggested for both processes. EXPERIMENTAL Material. The nickel source material used in all experiments was Baker and Adamson Reagent Grade NiSO4. 6H2O, for which the following analysis was supplied by the manufacturer: C1, 0.001 pct; NO3, 0.005 pct; Co, 0.02 pct; Cu, 0.005 pct; Pb, 0.002 pct; Fe, 0.001 pct: insol, 0.005 pct. The anhydrous sulfate was prepared by heating the hydrate at 420°C in a muffle furnace for 5 hr. Nickel oxide was prepared by decomposing the sulfate at 950°C over a period of 10 hr. Method. The technique used for measuring the rates of formation and decomposition was developed earlier in these laboratories.7-8 The method is based on the observation that the kinetic parameters of a reaction can be established in a flow system, with specimens prepared by compacting powder to a uniform pellet shape. The Bureau of Mines is evaluating the thermodynamic properties of helium and helium-containing mixtures. Twenty-two compressibility runs were made with helium at 0° C and pressures to 800 atmospheres using a Burnett-type apparatus. Data from the 22 runs were treated simultaneously and as separate runs while different functional forms and weighting factors were used. A fourth-degree-polynomial equation in the pressure gives a statistically satisfactory representation of the compressibility factor when the data are treated simultaneously and a weighting factor of Pr-3/4 is used. The second virial coefficient of helium at 0° C from this investigation is 11.997±0.015 cm3 mole-1. The stated uncertainty is the random error standard deviation. Compressibility factors determined by this investigation are precise to better than 0.01 percent and are believed to be accurate to better than 0.02 percent.

The possibility of applying a neutron activation technique for silver exploration is considered. A mobile positive-ion accelerator type neutron source is used to irradiate a small area of rock or soil in situ. By using a short period of irradiation and gamma ray spectral analysis, a technique is shown for silver exploration. Two different mobile units are described. Laboratory and preliminary field tests both indicate that a sensitivity of less than 1 oz of silver per ton of ore can be achieved. The increasing consumption of silver for industrial uses and also for coinage has caused a serious shortage of silver in this country. The silver shortage has been reviewed and analyzed by kiilsgaard1 who concludes that, "The best hope for meeting future demands for silver is through accelerated exploration for precious ores." As almost all the exposed "bonanza" type silver deposits evidently have been found, it is urgent that some sensitive geophysical technique be found to detect large, extended, but generally low-grade, secondary ores, as well as hidden vein deposits. Silver is easily made radioactive by exposure to slow neutrons; hence a neutron activation method appears promising for locating silver deposits. The principles of mineral beneficiation using neutron activation techniques were discussed some years ago.2-4 Using the same approach, a preliminary description5 has been published of neutron activation as a mineral exploration tool. An exploration technique is described in which silver is made radioactive in situ and detected with a gamma radiation counter. The technique is similar to the well-known method used for uranium exploration. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS Elemental silver consists of two isotopes, Ag107 and Ag109, having naturally occurring isotopic abundances of 51.4% and 48.6%, respectively. For short periods of irradiation of silver by thermal neutrons, the long-lived 250 day, half-life isotope, Ag110m, is not produced in significant quantities. However, significant quantities of 2.3 min half-life Ag108 and 24.5 sec half-life Agl10 are formed by the following reactions. Ag108 and Agl10 emit a 0.44 Mev (million electron volts) and a 0.66 Mev gamma ray, respectively. Ag107 + n + Ag108 (2.3 min) Ag109 + n + Ag110 (24.5 sec). Because of the large capture cross section (110 barns) of Ag109, and short half-life of Ag110 (24.5 sec), the 0.66-Mev gamma ray is the most prominent emission from silver for neutron activation periods of about a minute's duration.* The 0.44-Mev gamma ray from Ag108 will also be present, but will be one or two orders of magnitude lower in intensity. The decay scheme of Ag110 is shown in Fig. 1. If the neutron irradiation time is limited to about 100 sec, the Ag110 activity will essentially reach saturation and can be used to detect the presence of silver. In a neutron flux of 10 8 neutrons/cm2/set, the induced 0.66-Mev activity in 1 g of silver will be about 2 x 107 disintegrations per sec. This is about 1000 times the measurable gamma activity of 1 g of uranium in equilibrium with all its decay products; hence there is ample activity for detection. Under the same conditions of activation, most of the other elements do not reach this relatively high disintegration rate. Although this is in favor of the proposed technique, other problems must be considered. For mobile operation, it is desirable to obtain the largest neutron flux to weight ratio. Hence we have used a small 150-kev accelerator-type neutron source rather than an isotopic source such as an americium-beryllium neutron source. By use of remote control system, an accelerator-type neutron source can be safely used without the massive shield required for an isotopic source. Moreover, an accelerator-type source is more versatile in that it allows one to use a flux of either 14-Mev or 3-Mev neutrons, depending on whether a tritium or a deuterium target is used. With a 14-Mev generator, one can obtain a flux of 10 9 neutrons/cm 2/sec, and with a 3-Mev generator, the flux is generally two orders of magnitude less. An attempt has been made to carry out qualitative assessment of mine water discharges from the different mines of West Bokaro Coalfields of Hazaribag district of Jharkhand, India. A total of 33 mine water samples were analyzed for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), major cations (Ca, Mg, Na, K), major anions (HCO3, SO4, Cl, NO3), and heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni, Co, As). The hydrochemical data has been evaluated in terms of major ion chemistry, solute acquisition processes and suitability of mine water for domestic, industrial and irrigation uses. The pH of the analyzed mine waters varies from 5.27?8.43 indicating acidic to alkaline nature of the water. The electrical conductivity (EC) values varied from 276 µScm-1 to 1598 µScm-1 for measured samples and spatial differences between the EC values reflects the wide variation in lithology, surface activities and hydrological regime prevailing in the region. The anion chemistry of the analyzed water samples shows the dominance of SO4 and HCO3 with a minor contribution from Cl, NO3 and F. The observed high values of sulphate in the mine water of the area may be attributed to the oxidative weathering of pyrites. On average chloride is contributing 5% of the total anionic balance (TZ-). Fluoride and nitrate have low concentrations and on average contributing <2% the total anions. The cation chemistry indicates that 79% of the samples are Ca>Mg>Na>K, while the 6% belong to Ca>Na>Mg>K and 1% of Ca>Mg>K>Na. Weathering of rock forming minerals and cation exchange processes normally control the levels of these cations. Concentrations of some heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr) are found to be well above the prescribed permissible levels recommended for the drinking water. The water quality assessment for drinking purposes indicates that most of the mine water having high TDS, total hardness (TH) and sulphate concentrations. This suggests that mine water of the study area is not suitable for direct use in drinking and domestic purposes and needs a proper treatment before its utilization. The assessment of water for irrigation uses show that the water is good to permissible quality and can be used for irrigation uses. However, high values of salinity, %Na, SAR, RSC and Mg-hazard at certain sites restrict its suitability for agriculture uses. IT frequently occurs in the establishment of reduction works, in an entirely new and untried mining district, that the metallurgist in charge finds considerable difficulty in determining the process best adapted to the ores which he receives for treatment. At the first glance it would seem easy enough to decide what style of furnace is best adapted for beneficiating any one class of minerals. If the ore possessed a quartzose gangue and was comparatively free from base metals, while salt could be obtained at a reasonable price, one would naturally resort to a chloridizing roasting, and pan or barrel amalgamation for the extraction of its silver contents. If galena or carbonate of lead was the prevailing mineral, and charcoal could be obtained at moderate figures, the blast-furnace would beneficiate the ores most advantageously. But if, as is usually the case in Colorado, the ores consisted of an intimate mixture of galena, zinc-blende, copper-pyrites, and noble silver minerals, associated with an overwhelming mass of siliceous heavy spar, or limestone gangue, the common reverberatory furnace can be used to the greatest advantage; and, although the product is only a copper matte, I do not hesitate to affirm that it can be treated, and the silver, gold, and copper produced at nearly the same price for which silver and lead can be separated. In Germany, blast-furnaces are frequently used for this same purpose, both for argentiferous and non-argentiferous copper ores ; but any one who will take the trouble to examine the statistics of smelting at Fahlun, the Oberharz, and other Continental works of this description, will see that the expenses are far too great, and the production much too small to think of employing this method in our mining districts, where only the softest and most miserable kind of charcoal is obtainable. I propose in this paper to give an accurate account of the expenses incurred at the Mount Lincoln Smelting Works in treating the same kind of ore, and producing the same end-product in both blast and reverberatory furnaces. I have taken for comparison a favorable campaign of the blast-furnace, and a good average month&apos;s running of the reverberatory. Coal has in general a wide range of density from minus 1.3 to plus 2.0 g/cm3 because of its variations in purity, rank, and porosity, etc. The coal density has great impact on froth flotation performance, but much less attention has been paid to particle density than particle size. Our previous research results demonstrated that cavitation-generated nanobubbles around 700 nm in diameter can significantly improve coal and phosphate flotation performance over a wide particle size range. In this study, the effect of nanobubble on the flotation performances of different density fractions (minus 1.3, 1.3-1.4, 1.4-1.5, 1.5-1.6, 1.6-1.8, 1.8-2.0, 2.2-2.2, and plus 2.2 g/cm3) of coal was investigated using a bank of 10-liter flotation cells, a specially designed 50-mm-inside-diameter column, and a 152-mm-inside-diameter column. It was found that nanobubble has the biggest impact on the flotation performance of 1.4-1.8 g/cm3 medium-density coal particles.

Computerization has allowed practical design of complicated and optimized belt conveyors for bulk materials from prediction of belt tensions around the belt circuit for a wide range of belt loadings and conveyance paths. These design methods are based on a knowledge of component operating characteristics and sources of tension change. As compared to generalized &apos;f&apos; methods, CEMA&apos;s historical Kx and Ky has provided nonlinear and more specific predictions of belt tension as affected by various components and operating conditions. These empirical values were developed in a different age and generalizations made in their development are now a constraint to additional conveyor improvements. This note describes a method for revealing micro-structures in tantalum through an {hkl} effect which was found during a study involving amorphous and crystalline tantalum oxides. Three steps are involved. First, an amorphous film of Ta2O5 is formed anodically1 on the surfaces of the tantalum. The amount needed depents on the thickness of the substrate tantalum; 1600Å of oxide, however, is generally satisfactory in the 1/2 -mil (12 µ) to 3-mil thickness range. The film at this point is uniform in color. Second, the anodized specimen is heated to 800°C in. vacuo during a period of a few minutes and held at temperature for 5 min. During such a treatment some oxygen leaves the oxide through dissolution into the substrate tantalum (e.g., at 10-8 Torr oxide films thinner than about 800 completely disappear on 5-mil strip). Considerable crystallization of the amorphous oxide also occurs adjacent to the metal/oxide interface but not throughout the oxide thickness. The thickness of oxide needed as a residue is not too critical; values between 500 and 1000Å (optical estimate&apos;) may be most useful. (The presence of a residual oxide layer after the heat treatment usually is not apparent; in fact, in most instances the surfaces have a metallic appearance. This can be the case also for thicker residual films needed in the detection of a crystalline oxide phase by surface X-ray diffraction—e.g., if the initial oxide film is 3000Å thick, enough crystalline oxide is formed for X-ray detection.) The third step eliminates the metallic appearance at the surface and reveals (or produces) a varied colored film of tantalum oxide. Two methods can be used and both will be illustrated. If the specimen is dipped in 48 pct HF for a few seconds, the tantalum is found to be covered with a multicolored oxide. Moreover the colors correlate with the grain structure of the substrate tantalum through an orientation dependence of the type illustrated in Fig. 1, where results of an orientation analysis by the Laue X-ray method have been plotted. Other film conditions would have provided a different set of colors for the same orientations. Any such correlation, however, provides a basis for a qualitative assessment of the distribution of orientations in a large sample. The cold-rolled structure of tantalum foil produced by a recrystallization anneal and a cold-rolling reduction of 95 pct is not easily obtained by usual metal-lographic methods.&apos; The structure, however, is easily revealed by the present technique, Fig. 2. The alternative third step is to reanodize the specimen. The optical nature of the final anodic film depends on the presence of the crystalline oxide phase; color variations indicate optical thickness variations in the film. As the reanodization voltage is increased from zero, straw and light brown colors appear (as usual), followed now by variations in color from grain to grain depending on {hkl} orientation. Suitable end points, which are determined by voltage and time, are easily established. Fig. 3, for example, shows the grain structure developed in 5-mil tantalum strip during a 30-min re-crystallization and grap-growth anneal at 1800°C. An anodic film of 1600Å thickness was added prior to the special 800°C anneal. Reanodization was done at constant current density (near 0.2 ma per sq cm) in an aqueous solution of H3PO4 (0.01 pct) and was terminated after the initial brown colors were replaced by a deep blue at approximately 30 v. Although good grain contrast can be obtained with bright field illumination, even greater contrast for black and white micrographs may be obtained with polarized light, as in Fig. 3.

"In case of free gold presence in ore, there is always problem of a choice between the gravity-flotation and gravity separation flowsheets. Study of morphology of gold being extracted by different methods allows to find the most efficient solution. One of the latest methods of gold concentration for wide range of grain size (-0.8+0 mm) is a flash flotation. The paper presents comparative testing results of flash and centrifugal separation.The goal of the studies was to determine process and flotation parameters of flash flotation. In case valued minerals are soft if compared to host rock, such minerals tend to concentrate into circulating load of grinding circuit. Thus, valued minerals can be overground, and in turn, will result in low extraction in flotation circuit. Integration of flash flotation operation into process flowsheet has been evaluated. Flash flotation operation can be successfully used not only for gold but also copper, lead, nickel and silver minerals.With low-sulphide ores being a case study under laboratory conditions, various flotation (impeller rotational speed, air flowrate) and process (pulp density, collector consumption, frother consumption, time of flotation) parameters were studied in view of its impact on gold flash flotation. Experiments were carried out under laboratory conditions using special pneumatic mechanical flotation machines.INTRODUCTIONGravity separation is used for extraction of coarse gold before cyanidation and before flotation of polymetallic ores to increase gold total recovery into gravity copper and lead concentrates.Benefit of the flash flotation is efficient recovery of coarse gold carrier particles (sulphides) thus preventing its regrinding and, as a result, low recovery. Surface subsidence monitoring is the most effective means for investigating the nature of, and developing the techniques for predicting, the surface movement and deformation process. However, because of imperfection in survey equipment and field practices, the surface movement data collected from field survey are not error-free. Also due to lack of proper numerical techniques for computing surface deformation from the measured surface movement data, a relatively large portion of the subsidence data collected could not provide more information other than surface movement. In this paper, the sources and magnitude of errors in the measured surface movements and calculated surface deformation are discussed. Techniques for improving the accuracy of the calculated deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain, and curvature) are developed. The proposed techniques include: (1) proper selection of monument spacing for subsidence monitoring; (2) a data smoothing technique for data pre-processing; and (3) a number of numerical methods and/or procedures for calculating surface deformation indices from the measured surface movement data.

It is proposed to consider here only comparisons made between results obtained when the materials employed are precisely the same, two furnaces at the same works for example, or the same furnace under different conditions as respects temperature of blast, method of charging, etc. With this limitation, the most important point in the comparison is the amount of fuel consumed per ton of iron. This, in fact, is the only item in the prime cost of the iron which can properly be said to vary in consequence of changes in the furnace process; for of the other principal items, the ore used per ton of iron, and also the amount of fluxing material, will depend on its richness, which, under the assumed conditions, will be practically invariable when taken over any considerable period; the labor cost also, from its nature, should be very nearly constant when estimated on the ton of iron.
