Draglines are extensively used in Indian mines. A dragline has more than hundreds of components, and it is complex in design. This study involves the evaluation of the reliability of a draglines system using a Bayesian network (BN) model mapped from a fault tree. Based on the BN inference, the reliability estimation, the diagnosis, and the sensitivity analysis are performed. In this paper, the overall reliability of the dragline is estimated as well as the contribution of the subsystems or components in the overall reliability evaluation is presented. The results showed that the three subsystems of the dragline, namely, the dragging mechanism, electrical auxiliary subsystem, and swing mechanism, have the lowest reliability (82.17%, 87.98%, and 91.30%, respectively) after an hour of operation. The overall reliability at the first hour of machine operation is estimated to be 62.03%. The study may provide a reference for future work related to the dragline machine’s reliability design and maintenance.

WITH the example of the steel open-hearth men and their round table conference before the copper men, the query naturally arose "Why cannot we do likewise?" The advantage of pooling and comparing knowledge on smelting in the copper reverberatory furnace seems particularly pertinent at this time when all metallurgical economies possible must be rigorously enforced. A great deal of data had also been obtained and filed during the period of litigation over the Carson patent, and it would naturally be available with the cessation of further suits. With these ideas in mind, H. Foster Bain took up the advisability of holding such a conference directly with the heads of all the companies in the United States operating copper reverberatories, and found a nearly unanimous response. The mining companies appointed representatives directly, or indicated to the heads of various metallurgical operations what members of their staffs should be sent to such a conference.

Research workers From the Bureau of Mines and industry met with other government and industry representatives in Pittsburgh, Pa., on January 22, 1975, to discuss the results of research under the Bureau of Mines Noise Control Program. The program, aimed at reducing noise in mines, is functionally divided into three major areas: Instrumentation, personal protection, and noise abatement. This proceedings contains the opening remarks to the seminar and seven technical presentations based on various aspects of noise abatement and control.

The project involves the construction of a new aqueduct tunnel by an Earth Pressure Balance TBM tunnel for the Novaliches-Balara Aqueduct No 4 (NBAQ4) project in Metro Manila. It comprises a 7.3 km long and 3.1 m internal diameter tunnel that can deliver up to 1,000 MLD of raw water and the tunnel passes under urban residential and urban populated areas adjacent to and along Commonwealth Avenue. A new reservoir intake structure was constructed in the La Mesa reservoir by a cofferdam and the TBM breakthrough connected the reservoir to the outlet surge shaft structure and the downstream pipe network system connecting to the Balara Water Treatment Plant. The TBM incorporated a double articulated head configuration to allow tight 80 m radius curves to navigate some of the difficult alignment considerations. The alignment passed very close to some existing foundations for MRT7 and needed to clear several tight curves to remain within government land ownership. The project excavated through the local Guadalupe weak rock formations and there was minimal ground movements observed as a result of the work.

"The Telfer processing plant commissioned its pyrite regrind and flotation circuit in August 2012. The circuit was designed to regrind pyrite concentrate to a p80 of <30µm then float a gold and copper rich concentrate before tails from the flotation circuit fed the carbon-in-leach (CIL) circuit downstream. Expected benefits were: improved CIL performance that would result from the finer grind and a reduction in cyanide soluble copper to the CIL circuit, as well as a small increase in overall flotation circuit recovery. While the benefits of a finer grind were soon realised, recovery in the post-regrind flotation circuit (named the ‘pyrite recleaner circuit’) was consistently and significantly lower than that expected based on laboratory test work. Selectivity in the pyrite recleaner circuit was virtually nil and copper reporting to the CIL circuit did not change as a result of the pyrite recleaner circuit operation.A pulp chemistry survey of the plant and comparison with the lab showed that the dissolved oxygen (DO) demand in the plant was much higher than that in the lab. Lab flotation tests conducted using nitrogen gas instead of air resulted in recoveries similar to those from the plant. It was identified that the freshly ground pyrite surfaces exiting the regrind mill were consuming oxygen in the slurry and there was insufficient oxygen available for collector adsorption and pyrite depression to occur. Test work, using a pilot regrind mill, showed that a reduction in grind size resulted in an increase in DO demand.A range of oxidising agents were tested in the laboratory and using a pilot flotation rig set-up in the plant. Oxygen was found to be the most reliable and effective agent and options for increasing oxygen delivery to the plant were explored. Grunerite asbestos (amosite) has been shown in epidemiological and experimental animal studies to cause lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis commonly referred to as asbestosis. An overview of the human and experimental animal studies describing the health hazards of grunerite asbestos (amosite) is presented. Of the many human studies describing the health hazards of asbestos, only three factories using mainly, if not exclusively, grunerite asbestos (amosite) have been studied. The first is a series of reports on a cohort of 820 workers from a plant located in Paterson, NJ. Among this cohort, 18.7% died of lung cancer and 17 mesotheliomas occurred. The Paterson factory closed in 1954 and moved to Tyler, Texas where it operated until 1972. Among the 1130 former workers in the Tyler plant 6 mesotheliomas were reported with 15.8% lung cancer mortality. The third grunerite asbestos (amosite) exposed cohort was an insulation board manufacturing facility in Uxbridge, United Kingdom. Here 17.1% of the workers died of lung cancer and 5 mesotheliomas occurred. The lung content from 48 Uxbridge workers was analyzed by analytical transmission electron microscopy for mineral fibers. The relationship between grunerite asbestos (amosite) concentrations in the lung correlated with grades of fibrosis and asbestos bodies and was lower than the concentration found in the cases with malignant tumors. The lung cancer cases contained more grunerite asbestos (amosite) than mesothelioma cases, and in the cases of non-alignant disease the concentrations were still lower. In both types of malignancies the concentration of grunerite asbestos (amosite) was very high-over a billion fibers per gram of dried lung tissue. Occupational exposure to airborne concentrations of between 14 and 100 fibers of grunerite asbestos (amosite) per milliliter after 20 year latency causes marked increases in lung cancer, mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis (asbestosis). © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "Because of high cost and shortage of primary resources of Ni-base superalloys, revert alloys can be used as a part of charging materials for production of superalloys ingots. The current study is based on recycling of IN738LC, a Ni-base superalloy, using 30% and 50% reverted alloy and balanced amount of virgin raw materials. Therefore, it has been attempted to cast an alloy with references to standard chemical composition and mechanical properties. After charging and casting in vacuum melting furnaces, chemical composition verification and non-destructive tests (i.e. Penetration and Radiography Tests), quality of samples were evaluated at elevated temperature by stress-rupture test. Results acquired from chemical composition and mechanical test indicate that cast ingots using 30% and 50% reverted alloy is reliable and consistent with the quality control requirements.IntroductionIn recent years, there have been many fluctuations in cost and availability of raw materials which are extremely determining in Ni-base superalloys production. Accessibility to the high purity metals such as Cobalt, Molybdenum, Tantalum, Niobium and etc. have been problematical during the past decades. Therefore, shortages of critical raw materials beside the economical considerations motivated the alloy suppliers and investigators to study and find alternate sources such as reclamation and recycling of scraps [1].There are a lot of reasons for the necessity of recycling; perhaps the most justifiable one is that consumers themselves produce scraps. For example, the weight of a finished superalloy product could be less than one-third of the cast alloy weight and in the case of complicated machined parts; this portion may reach to one-tenth [2]. High values of constituents, reduction of energy consumption and environmental concerns have all strengthened the obligation of recycling in Ni-base superalloys.Because of the high degree of risk in usage of improper materials for production of turbine blades, a delicately controlled program for recycling is needed. Depending on the type of scraps, this program can define the recycling procedure, required instruments, allowable percentage of scrap for usage and finally confidence level of the process."

"Phosphate ore is one of the most significant secondary resources for rare earth elements (REEs), and Florida phosphate is of particular interest due to its much higher ratio of heavy REEs, especially yttrium. Analyses of numerous samples from different phosphate processing streams in Florida showed that heavy REEs account for about 50% of the total REEs in Florida phosphate with yttrium accounting for approximately 30%. It was estimated that the amount of yttrium from US phosphate processing could meet the world demand for this critical element. This research aimed at recovering both REEs and phosphorus from a phosphate flotation tails. This tails is composed of mainly silica and phosphate with a small fraction of heavy minerals including monazite and xenotime. Since the specific gravity of silica is 2.6 versus 3.2 for phosphate and 4.5-5 for rare earth minerals, pre-concentration of the minerals of interest by gravity separation was investigated first. A pilot scale shaking table was used in this study. One pass gravity concentration achieved a shaking table concentrate analyzing over 600 ppm REEs at about 40% recovery. Flotation of the shaking table concentrate resulted in a product containing 1809 ppm REEs and 26.37% P2O5 with corresponding recoveries of 73% and 82%. Sulfuric acid leaching at 75oC could recover over 60% REE and nearly all the P2O5. Higher REEs (>90%) recovery was achieved by conducting leaching at higher temperature with concentrated sulfuric acid. The phosphoric acid from leaching of the flotation concentrate is of superior quality compared with that generated from regular phosphate rock.INTRODUCTION Rare earths are a group of 17 elements including those of the lanthanum series, as well as the non-lanthanides, yttrium and scandium. These elements have very specific critical uses in a multitude of markets. For example, lanthanum is used as a catalyst in breaking down crude oil to produce gasoline, diesel and jet fuel and neodymium is the core magnetic component in high-strength magnets for electric car batteries, wind turbines and hard disk drives. Rare earths are also essential for many military applications. Many of these applications have no substitute materials and the move to green technologies has dramatically increased their demand."

This report describes Bureau of Mines research that led to the design, prototype fabrication, and successful proof-of-concept testing of an improved stench fire-warning system for underground noncoal mines. Stench systems are the most widely used means of warning driers in underground noncoal mines of fires or other emergencies. A stench system alerts miners that an emergency condition exists by injecting an odorant into the mine air. Although stench warning systems have been used successfully for over 60 yr, present systems suffer several serious shortcomings, including odorant toxicity, unreliability of warnings, widely varying stench concentrations, and others. In 1980, the Bureau began a research program to upgrade the stench warning system. The resultant system overcomes the deficiencies of existing systems by substituting tetrahydrothiophene for the commonly used ethyl mercaptan stench odorant, and through the use of a specially designed stench injector. The improved injector reliably meters stench fluid into either ventilation-air or compressed-air streams at a precisely controlled rate. Prototype hardware has been fabricated and proof-of-concept tested under bath laboratory and in-mine conditions.

"INTRODUCTION Outer space technology and exploration have reached a tipping point so that mining and mineral processing in outer space is now a certainty and not a dream. Several competing companies, worldwide, are well on the way to building spaceships to land on the Moon and eventually mine the Moon and asteroids for volatiles, rare earth metals and Helium-3. The Google Lunar XPrize offers a $30 million prize1. China has recently landed a spacecraft on the Moon. The European Space Agency, with cooperation from the United States, has landed a spacecraft, Philae, on a comet. And, Mars One is planning a one-way trip to establish a settlement of humans on Mars. How and why are the Moon and asteroids and their resources of interest to private space industry and companies? Why are the Moon and asteroids viewed as a potential business venue? GEOLOGY OF THE MOON AND ASTEROIDS –WHY DO WE WANT TO MINE THERE? Space enterprises are actively working towards establishing and operating lunar and asteroid mining locations for resource extraction, resource processing, conversion to salable products, and distribution of the products and services in space and to Earth and beyond2. Forty-five years ago, the Apollo manned missions to the Moon returned rocks and regolith to Earth, which were studied and analyzed. What they found was that the Moon contains valuable minerals and resources. These minerals are largely due to meteor and asteroid impacts, which have, over eons, created this mineral rich regolith. These impacts have occurred on Earth as well, for billions of years, particularly early on in the history of the solar system. However, on Earth, wind, water, and vegetation have erased most of these impacts. On the Moon, in contrast, the only weathering is caused by subsequent impacts and the solar wind. The Moon regolith contains valuable rare earth minerals, platinum-group minerals (particularly where the Moon has been impacted by asteroids), volatiles (useful for processing and habitation), Helium-3 and titanium. Almost non-existent on earth, Helium-3 is abundant and accessible on the Moon and can be used in nuclear fusion power plants, producing much more energy than fission reactions and with much less radioactive waste. One of the main reasons Helium-3 is sought after as a fusion fuel is because there are no neutrons generated as a reaction product. Governments and private companies focus on mining of Helium-3 on the Moon as a basis for their economic models. Moon Express, one of the private companies who is planning on mining on the Moon, will recover moon rocks to fund its early operations25. Subsequently, it will recover Helium-3, platinum, and rare earth metals, as it engages in surface mining operations."

Then enough circulars have been completed it is planned to publish a more complete and comprehensive paper in bulletin form dealing with the subject of underground transportation. Progress reports, followed by bulletins, will be prepared from time to time dealing with other subjects included in the general study of mining methods at individual mines, such as mine development, drilling, and blasting; stoping methods (each principal stoping method to be summarized in a separate paper); ventilation; wage, contract end bonus systems, etc.

Since the inception of the Ashton (formerly Kalumburu) Joint Venture in 1972 the parties have expended 524 million in exploration for diamonds in the Kimberley region. This has resulted in the discovery of the currently subeconomic Ellendale deposits in 1976/77 and the economic Argyle - Smoke Creek Deposits in 1979/80. In addition to Argyle and Ellendale some 90 kimberlitic and lamproitic bodies have been discovered grouped broadly into three provinces, on the west, east and north margins of the Kimberley block. These bodies range in size from dyke-like features less than one metre in width to pipes with a surface area of 128ha. The bodies with larger surface area are volcanic crater deposits, infilled with air-fall and water deposited tuffs and epiclastic sediments.

Machine manufacturers’ recommendations on maintenance strategies of capital-intensive draglines are not always based on real data and therefore lead to losses from downtime. This paper proposes a preventive maintenance strategy for a dragline deployed in an opencast coal mine based on reliability-centered maintenance and failure-mode-effects analysis using real operational data. Reliability-centered maintenance replaced a cluster of critical failure components of the dragline while satisfying two specific conditions: (i) the components should be replaced at the earliest mean time to failure (MTTF) within the group and (ii) the time taken to replace all the parts should be equivalent to the maximum downtime within the group. Estimated threshold weightage factor identified twenty-six critical failure components for the preventive maintenance strategy, and clustering of components divided them into nine groups. In a group, the loss that is expected to occur by replacing some of the components before their failure, and the gain by reducing the overall maintenance downtime, has been explained through a cost-benefit analysis. The total net profit generated is calculated as US$200,178. This clustering activity also led to a reduction of annual downtime by 231 h, whose approximate market price as equivalent coal production costs $295,365.

In this study, the "Mine Project Risk Management" methodology, MPRM (Botin et al. 2011), has been applied to characterize the sources of uncertainty and to quantify risk in the mining engineering stages of Block Caving mining method. As the result, rock mass caveability and ore fragmentation were identified as the two most relevant parameters of this process and a methodological model has been developed to quantify the risk associated to each of these two parameters. Furthermore, the applicability of the proposed model has been validated using as a case study the Chuquicamata Underground Mine Project in Chile.

At the outset of the war the uncontrolled production and possession of explosives obviously became a serious menace to the safety of persons and property and the successful conduct of military opera- tions. Even in the years immediately preceding the entrance of the United States into the Great War explosives were employed in attempts to wreck munitions plants as at Eddystone, Pa., or to inter- rupt transportation and conveyance by demolition of munition-laden cars as at Black Tom Island, N. Y., or by attacks on ships, bridges, and viaducts. Outrages with explosives, such as that which Holt inflicted on the Senate reception room, United States Capitol, were not infrequent, and often caused serious loss of life and injury to persons as well as destruction of property. The regular manufacturers of explosives were keenly alive to this menace and early took such steps as lay within their power to meet it as is shown by the following letter:

The Bibliographic Data Base is the result of a literature search con-ducted as one task of the technology assessment of current and advanced logging techniques, sponsored by the United States Bureau of Mines. After compilation, the bibliography was converted to an automated form for ease of utilization, and to allow for maintaining and updating the data base. The data base covers articles, symposia, books, patents, corporate and government reports, and other literature concerned with some aspect of borehole logging from January 1969 through December 1975. Periodic up-dating will be necessary to keep the data base contents in step with developments in the rapidly advancing field of application of borehole logging to mining. Many bibliographic indexes were scanned for entries relating to the subject of interest, and those entries which were included in our data base contain a reference to the bibliographic index in which they were listed (see Section 2.4.7). With the aid of these indexes, a vast number of publications, including foreign reports and publications, have been scanned for works relevant to borehole logging technology.

Traditionally the Pacific Northwest has relied on hydroelectric power, which has been both abundant and cheap. However, comparatively few hydroelectric sites capable of providing low-cost power remain, therefore the need for supplemental thermal generation, perhaps within the next decade, is generally recognized. Based on the present cost and availability of competing fuels, coal seems to be the logical choice for projected thermal power plants. Power companies and public utilities have become interested in establishing reserves of coal for future use. One deposit explored in 1958-59 lies in southern Thurston and northern Lewis Counties, Wash., near Centralia. Drilling, totaling 22,700 feet, proved the existence of 70 million tons of strippable coal--an ample reserve for the projected power plant. The coal, like most others and particularly those of Washington and Oregon, when mined in full seam section by mechanical methods, would require cleaning to make it suitable for use. The amount and nature of the impurities in this coal dictated a thorough investigation of its cleaning characteristics to establish economic factors and to insure proper preparation-plant design. Therefore, arrangements were made through a cooperative agreement to conduct such work at the Seattle Coal Research Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines. This report describes that investigation. The results are of interest primarily in connection with the utilization of this particular deposit, but some of the information developed is applicable to other deposits of low-rank coals in the West, because the impurities in these coals differ greatly in behavior from those generally associated with the higher rank coals of the Appalachian field.
