The Old Dominion Co, at Globe, Ariz., like the: Phelps Dodge Corporation with which it is closely allied, considers safety a major operating problem. Safety is fostered by this company in consideration of both the humanitarian and economic aspects; the officials, take pride in promoting the welfare of employees, and the management has found that the safest way is the most eco¬nomical and that unless an organization is operated economically it can not continue to exist successfully. In planning and operating any safety, organization, terry things must be taken into consideration because an Enterprise can not be operated solely for safety any more than it can for any other single part of the operations. All work must be planned and executed for the common interest.

In 2015, after amendments to the explosives regulations, stemming became a mandatory activity for all South African mining operations. There are, however, circumstances in which it is thought stemming has an adverse impact on the blasting outcome. Some of these circumstances include blasting in hot holes, in reactive ground, or when blasting a pre-split. In order to determine when stemming is necessary, its role in the control of adverse blasting phenomena and impact on explosive performance were reviewed. Stemming was found to play a significant role in the fragmentation process and burden movement. Additionally, stemming significantly influences the control of flyrock, air-blast, and toxic fume generation. The review of the literature indicates some motivation for not using stemming for presplit, trim, hot hole, and reactive ground blasting, provided the benefits associated with not stemming the holes outweigh the risks of stemming them. Best practice for stemming from the literature indicates a stemming length of 0.7 × burden is best for larger hole diameters, and 20 to 30 × Ø for smaller hole diameters. Crushed aggregate appears to be the most effective stemming material. The South African explosives regulations pertaining to stemming were found to be consistent with those of Australia and the USA.

THE following report covers the history of the development of the mine, present equipment, methods and costs of mining and milling. In addition, a description of the ore deposit is given with emphasis on the origin of the fractures, mode and types of ore occurrence, and mechanics of granite emplacement. An endeavor has been made to present a complete and accurate statement of the San Mauricio mine, the highest grade gold mine in the Philippine Islands. Credit is gratefully acknowledged to the mine staff for descriptions and details regarding their particular field of work. All analyses were made by Mr. T. A. DeVore, head chemist, San Mauricio Mining Co. Messrs. Edward Wisser, J. E. Fyfe, A. F. Skerl and W. B. Meek, geol-ogists, have contributed geologic information and ideas, for which thanks are extended. In recent, years the demand and consumption of finely ground industrial minerals has substantially increased for such uses as fillers and chemically reactive components. The size, specifications for these types of industrial mineral materials vary to a great extent and depend on the particular end purpose' and on the physical properties of the mineral itself. Size reduction of industrial minerals usually is obtained by conventional crushing and grinding methods. However, some specialized milling techniques have been developed for producing these minerals in extremely fine particle size ranges. During recent years the Bureau of Mines has been investigating an attrition grinding method to produce ultrafine subsieve-size mineral particles. The Bureau developed process, which has been patented,2 comprises the intense agitation of a slurry composed of the material to be ground, a relatively fine granular grinding medium, and a suspending fluid. The process has been shown to be effective for the comminution of kaolin in the particle size range of 2 microns and finer on a batch3 and continuous basis.4,5 This report presents the results of batch tests made to determine the effectiveness of the attrition grinding process for comminuting commercial products of (1) mica, a tough lamellar material, (2) fluorite, a brittle intermediately hard material, and (3) barite, a relatively soft, massive material.

The Sotra Link Project is a major infrastructure project in Norway involving the design, construction, financing and maintenance of several underground and surface structures between Sotra island and the city of Bergen, among them 23 tunnel portals, 12.5 km of tunnels and a 900 m long suspension bridge. This paper describes the benefits in applying a Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach to tunnelling, from Early Design to the Detail Design Phase. The BIM application to the Sotra Link Project resulted in several improvements, such as efficient handling of clashes and inconsistencies, deeper understanding of effective design choices (reduction of errors), more efficient communication between designers, enhanced control of project quantities and costs. The advantages of the BIM approach during the ongoing Construction Phase are also explained.

Over the past 14 years, the efforts of 2 companies and several individuals have outlined a major solfataric gold ore body in the Summitville district in the southeast San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The hard work of these years could not have flowered without a dedication to modern exploration methods, an intense interest in new theories of ore genesis, and a relentless discontent with the accepted geology of the Summitville area. To set the stage for this discovery period, it must be noted that it began 100 years after gold was first found at Summitville. It was the height of the "porphyry copper" era and gold was still not a part of the explorationists' portfolio. It was also a time of great intellectual stimulation. Theories were rapidly developing to relate different types of ore deposition and to place ore genesis within the fabric of plate tectonics. Summitville itself had just been linked to the newly discovered Platoro caldera complex and the Platoro lineament. This in turn related Summitville to the other San Juan volcanic field caldera ore deposits.

INTRODUCTION Historically, planning a mine involved the economic decision of whether to mine by open-pit methods or underground methods. The method selected was influenced by a number of factors, including size, tenor, and location of the deposit. If the project could not be justified by either underground or open-pit practices, it remained in fallow until economic conditions changed or technology advanced. Technology has advanced and the mining industry now has another option, that of in situ leaching. This method is on the threshold of becoming a commonly used alternative for production in many types of metal and mineral deposits. It will be utilized as the primary method for developing an ore body or as an adjunct to open-pit or underground operations. The following considers application of the technique to a deposit that had been partially exploited by open-pit methods. HISTORY The Big Mike Copper Mine is located approximately 30 miles south of Winnemucca, in Pershing County, Nevada. Interest in the property dates from the turn of the century, but little exploration was undertaken until the mid '60s. In 1967 Cerro Corporation acquired the property and initiated a major drilling effort. Ranchers Exploration obtained the property after this exploration program in late 1969 and confirmation drilling was undertaken. The deposit was delineated and it was determined that reserves amounted to about 100,000 tons of 10.0% massive copper sulfide ore and 700,000 tons of 2 .O% mixed oxide-sulfide ore. Reaching movements are planned and subsequently executed [1] using visual and somatosensory feedbacks [2], where absence of visual feedback is known to increase endpoint variability [3]. Visual occlusion decreases the ability to make rapid online compensatory movements, which results in initial radial deviations that are highly correlated with radial dispersion at the target. Perturbations of rapid, visually-guided reaches are compensated on-line and result in endpoint dispersions poorly correlated with initial deviations, emphasizing the strong effect of visual feedback in temporally-constrained reaching tasks. In control conditions (no vibration), these uncompensated, rapid reaches serve as estimates of the individual’s intended trajectory. When ride motion is present, trajectories of rapid, visually-occluded reaches provide a measure of the natural biodynamic response of the cantilevered spine-arm-hand linkage. These intended movement trajectories and the biodynamic response (vibration feedthrough) are used to predict the effect of ride motion on the performance of rapid reaching tasks. Goals of this study are to investigate the influences of vehicle motion on human reaching and pointing, and to reveal movement strategies used in visually-occluded reaching tasks. Methods A six degree of freedom human-rated Ride Motion Simulator (RMS) was used to generate a dynamic vehicle environment. Participants performed discrete, rapid pointing tasks to targets presented on three touchpanel displays under stationary and random whole-body vibration. Reach instructions included successfully reaching identical circular targets (Ø = 0.25”) with the right index fingertip as fast as possible. Targets were presented on resistive-touch displays mounted approximately 60 cm from the participant’s nasion. The touchpanel displays were located in the forward and lateral directions at eye level, and forward at 45° of elevation. These displays measured the spatial error of the reach destination. A ten-camera VICON motion capture system recorded the upper body kinematics of the participant. Reflective markers were placed on the participant’s torso, head, and arms. Initial kinematics of the fingertip (i.e. time and magnitude peak tangential velocity) and tangential velocity at target were used to estimate the planned endpoint of the reach. Results and Discussion Ride motion resulted in increased endpoint variability compared to reaches performed in the stationary condition. Reaches to the elevated touchpanel consistently resulted in the largest variability across all motion conditions, suggesting that a vehicle occupant would not be capable of accurately activating a control in that location. Principal axes of endpoint ellipses were along and perpendicular to the direction of fingertip movements. INTRODUCTION In response to the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (Public Law 95-604, Section 114c), a report has been prepared by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (1980) which describes the potential health and environmental effects associated with uranium mine wastes. The author was responsible for the geology, hydrology and aqueous pathways analysis portions of the report. All potential sources of contaminants, solids, liquids, and airborne emissions, which might cause adverse impacts upon the environment or health of nearby populations were considered. Wastes at both active and inactive uranium mines (Hans and O'Connell, 1981) are described and assessed with respect to dose and health effects (Blanchard et al. 1981). The emphasis of this paper is on the liquid emissions and the aqueous pathway. Model uranium mines were developed for surface and underground mines. The model underground mine was placed in New Mexico while the model surface mine was in Wyoming. Development of a generic assessment was complicated due to the inherent variability of uranium mines. Also, most information available relates to uranium mills rather than to mines, or reported measurements were often influenced (biased) by wastes from a nearby mill and did not specifically reflect mine discharges. Consequently, the assessment presented is often based on conservatve (maximizing) assumptions which are identified as such, and which were based on knowledge from field investigations, available literature, and consultations inside and outside the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Maximum use was made of available data, supplemented with limited field studies in Colorado, Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Stream survey work in Colorado by the Water Pollution Control Commission and the U.S. Geological Survey (Moran, 1974; Wentz, 1974) mentioned a portion of the Uravan Mineral Belt and uranium mines therein, but the work did not emphasize uranium mines. Significant amounts of acidity and total trace metal concentrations were found in streams from 18 different mining areas. Dilution and chemical precipitation below mine drainages decreased concentration and increased the pH. Given enough time and distance, the streams recover naturally, but the accumulations of trace metals in the sediments increase. Field observations in 1971-72 of streams in most of Colorado indicated that approximately 724 km of streams in 25 different mining areas were adversely affected by mine drainage (Wentz, 1974). Discussions of the impacts of uranium mining on water quality or quantity are incidental in numerous impact statements and environmental reports prepared by industry and (or) the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission as an integral part of licensing or relicensing uranium mills. Coverage on mining is usually minor as the principal focus is on milling impacts. The same is true for the recently prepared generic EIS on regulation of uranium milling (U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, 1979). Radiochemical assessment of surface and groundwater in uranium mining districts of New Mexico is done by self-monitoring programs associated with NPDES permits. Also, radiochemical assessment studies have been funded by the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Division and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Unfortunately, there has been no concerted effort to prepare broad assessments of the cumulative impacts of mining and milling in areas of interest in Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. Critical review and synthesis of these types of data can produce rather useful information. For example, the publication "Water Quality Impacts of Uranium Mining and Milling Activities in the Grants Mineral Belt, New Mexico" (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 1975) addresses the groundwater and surface water changes as the result of extensive uranium mining and milling production in a relatively confined area. A more recent report by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality summarizes 16 years of aqueous radium and uranium data. The study reports significant amounts of radium-226 and uranium were present in surface water in the Shirley Basin as a result of inadequate mine water treatment (Harp, 1978). In Texas, surface water and groundwater monitoring conducted by industry, as well as by State and Federal agencies, reveals little or no change of chemical quality attributable to uranium mining and milling (Gesell, 1977; Kallus, 1976). This conclusion is based on 586 samples collected from 198 stations over a period of 39 years, but primarily from 1961 to 1975. The State monitoring program by several agencies is continuing, but data reporting and interpretation is lagging. One survey (Itin, 1975) showed that none of the mine water from the 10 lakes that were sampled was suitable for human use. The lakes were also unsuitable for irrigation due to mineralization of the water by sulfate, chloride, and TDS. One of the 10 was suitable for stock watering.

Duties on Lead Imports from Mexico. - On September 15, the President signed Proclamation 4792 suspending concessions formerly granted as of January 1 on red lead imported from Mexico. The Proclamation also increased the duty payable on litharge imported from Mexico from 3% ad valorem to 3.5% ad valorem, effective September 15. Appeal of Lead Standards. - The U.S. Court of Appeals for Washington, D.C., rejected petitions by the Lead Industries Assoc. and St. Joe Minerals Corp. for a review of standards promulgated by EPA and OSHA. The Lead Industries Assoc. reportedly will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court on the basis of the "benzene" and "cotton dust" decisions. Scheduled implementation of standards will continue during the appeal.

SANDBERG, LONDON, ENG : † I think we should all be grateful to the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, and to their chemist, Dr., Dudley, for spending so much time and money in order to solve an important question ; nor are we less indebted to the public spirit which leads them to impart the experience thus gained. In Europe nothing similar has hitherto been done, either by a company or by any private individual. In England the great railway companies employ their engineers in other ways, and do not keep a chemist or specialist to study rails; but even if they did they would probably not publish the results. The chief professional engineers are so occupied with their private practice of railroad construction generally, that they cannot be expected to devote their time and energies to so special a question. The German Railway Union has, in my opinion, missed the real object of its elaborate researches by falling into the error of specifying costly, impracticable tests for rails-tests at the same time which do not infallibly expose the impurities that may be in the rails under examination. There has, therefore, been nothing done on this side of the Atlantic in the way of exhaustive study to determine the best composition for steel rails. America should consequently have full credit for the enlightened example which she has set. I wish, however, to make a few remarks on Dr. Dudley's second paper, a paper which follows very much upon the same lines of argument as the first read three years ago, upon which I have previously touched in my paper on the same subject read at the meeting in August last. If Dr. Dudley had discovered a new metal he could hardly, I think, have taken more pains to prove that he was correct in his first formula for the best chemical composition of steel rails. But I have seen so much done in the way of proof by experiment that I am inclined to think that almost anything can be proved by experiments and by samples. If Dr. Dudley would only give up his formula, which would not suit any country-not even America- * For the convenience of members it has bees thought best to insert the continuation of this discussion at the Virginia meeting in tide place, rather than to delay its permanent publication until the issue of Volume X, Transactions, where it would properly belong. "The importers and manufacturers who import or produce products with packaging containers are charged a recycling fee in Taiwan. The amount of waste packaging containers used for calculating the recycling charge is based upon the amount declared by importers and manufacturers which might be underestimated. This study aims to estimate the amount of waste packaging containers generated by households in Taiwan and also explores its distribution. The sampling survey and ratio estimation are conducted for estimating the recycled amount; while the refuse sampling method for municipal solid waste composition is employed to estimate the un-recycled waste packaging containers. The estimated total amount of waste packaging containers in 2011 generated by households in Taiwan is 696,511 m.t., of which, 79.49% of the waste packaging containers were recycled and 20.51 % were landfilled or incinerated. This study shows that the amount of waste packaging containers declared by importers and producers is underestimated around 20%.IntroductionWaste packaging containers including iron cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, paper containers, aluminum foiled paper packs are officially announced to be recycled in Taiwan. In order to create the economic incentive for raising recycling performance, associated manufacturers and importers are charged a recycling fee to subsidize recyclers. The amount of packaging containers declared by importers and manufacturers is used for calculating the recycling charge and recycling rate. The importers and manufacturers might underreport their producing (importing) amount to pay less recycling fees. Therefore, the estimated waste packaging containers based upon the amount declared by importers and manufacturers is usually underestimated. Related previous studies about waste packaging containers recycling in Taiwan are done by Hsu and co-workers [1-4]. Hsu and Kuo [1] estimated total production values of recycling and evaluated the performance of recycling performance based upon the estimated production values. Hsu and Liu [5] provided a cost analysis of recycling for waste packaging containers in Taiwan. Bor, Chien, and Hsu [2] presented a market-incentive recycling system for waste packaging containers in Taiwan. Hsu and Kuo [4] provided an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes for waste packaging containers recycling. Lee and Hsu [ 6, 7] explored the distribution, fee rates, and collection rate of waste containers. This study aims to estimate the amount of waste packaging containers generated by households in Taiwan and also explore its distribution."

The Muruntau gold deposit is situated in the Kyzyl Kum Desert of Uzbekistan. It is currently being mined in the world's largest open pit gold mine with production believed to be of the order of two million ounces per annum. The open pit measures about 3.5 by 2.5 km and extends to a depth of 350m. The gold ore resource in the Muruntau deposit, including production, is about 170 million ounces of gold (Anonymous, 1996). This paper presents a summary of the deposit geology and its regional geological setting. Information used in this paper has been generated from observations made on two visits to the mine and its environs, and a review of the Russian-and English-language literature.

"The deportment of gold in residue samples of cyanide leach tests of David Bell ore from level 6A block 13 was established using a comprehensive quantitative mineralogical approach. In every test the feed was first pre-aerated for 4 hours, followed by 48h cyanidation. Test no. 2 was done without lead nitrate and yielded a residue assaying 3.03g Au/t. In test nos. 4 and 9 lead nitrate was added before pre-aeration at 0.03kg/t and 0.3kg/t respectively yielding residues of 1.04 and 0.81 g Au/t.The mineralogical approach employed to establish the deportment of gold involved superpanning, to preconcentrate the free gold and assaying of the tailing fraction to determine the gold associated with quartz. It was thus determined that without lead nitrate added 47.2% of the lost gold is in the form of residual free gold particles less than 20 µm in size. It is this form of gold which is under represented in the residues of leach tests with lead nitrate added.Having eliminated coarseness of gold particles as a factor for lower recovery, it was determined that the residual gold particles have extensively contaminated surfaces. Amongst the deleterious surface contaminants identified: S, As, Ag, Sb and Hg, the two most harmful are S and Hg because of their concentration on the surface and rate of accumulation.Mercury and Ag are minor constituents of native gold at David Bell (average composition Au: 78.9 wt%, Hg: 18.5 wt% and Ag: 2.6 wt%) and they become enriched on the surface of residual gold particles because of their slower rate of dissolution in cyanide. The other elements absorb onto the gold particles from solution.The beneficial effect of lead nitrate was documented by comparative surface analysis of gold from residue samples of 48 hour leach testing with and without lead nitrate added and from time dependent (0-2 hour) leach tests in the presence and absence of lead nitrate. Lead nitrate accelerates the dissolution of gold by performing the following functions: (i) catalytic effect on the cyanidation of gold by accepting electrons; (ii) reaction with surface sulphur to form PbS which is then removed by oxidation; (iii) catalytic reaction on amalgam and Ag facilitating the cyanidation of Hg and Ag thus slowing down their build up onto the dissolving gold particles and (iv) the precipitation of sulphide sulphur from solution thus minimizing its build up on the surface of dissolving gold particles which is believed to facilitate the access of cyanide ions."

Seven iron alloys ranging from 5 to 12 pct Ni and 5 to 14 pct Cr were studied. All alloys transformed to bcc massive martensites. Tempering increased the strengths , probably because of relief of residual stresses generated by the martensite transformation. The major strengthening mechanism appeared to be solid-solution hardening by nickel and chromium. Studies of the work-hardening behaviw, of the effects of prior austenite grain size, and of the effects of changing strain rate and test temperature gaue results very similar to iron or low-alloy steels. Increasing nickel contents markedly improved the toughness at subzero temperatures. Studies of the flow properties did not, however, indicate the reason for the beneficial effect of nickel on toughness. The marine atmosphere corrosion resistance of the alloys was improved primarily by chromium additions, but increasing nickel contents were also beneficial at low levels of chromium. J\ number of maraging and PH stainless steels are strengthened by precipitation hardening in a low-carbon Fe-Ni-Cr martensite matrix. To some extent the resultant properties of these steels must depend upon the properties of this matrix. The present study therefore was conducted to evaluate the transformation characteristics and mechanical properties of a series of Fe-Ni-Cr martensitic ternary alloys. A limited evaluation of the corrosion resistance of the alloys in marine atmosphere was also made. ALLOY PREPARATION Seven 100-lb air induction melts were prepared using electrolytic iron, nickel, and chromium metal additions. The initial Fe-Ni charge also contained 0.05 wt pct graphite to produce a carbon boil during melt down. After melting of the base charge, the heats were refined with 0.1 wt pct additions of manganese, silicon, aluminum and titanium and poured into cast-iron molds. The ingots were homogenized at 1250°C and uni-directionally hot-rolled to 2-in. plate. They were then homogenized another hour at 1250°C, and unidirection-ally hot-rolled to %-in. plate at a finishing temperature of approximately 1050°C. The compositions of the heats are given in Table I. Two additional heats were prepared as 40-lb vacuum-induction melts using electrolytic iron, nickel, and chromium metals, and commercially pure molybdenum chips. A carbon boil, and 0.1 wt pct additions of aluminum and titanium were again employed, but manganese and silicon were not added. The heats were converted to %-in. plate using the procedure described above. The compositions of these heats are included in Table I.

"Large-diameter flotation columns are subject to severe axial mixing which has reduced column recovery and has generally limited it to cleaner applications. It has been assumed that columns with diameter greater than 1 m should be baffled to reduce axial mixing, but little work has been reported quantifying the effectiveness of baffling. Tests were done on a 0.2 m by 2 m column fitted with baffles of different geometry. It was generally found that the inclusion of baffles in the column worsened rather than improved mixing conditions in the column. This is explained in terms of a model for the effect of poor gas distribution on the behaviour of the column; this showed that under typical conditions a 16% excess of gas flux in the one compartment of a two-compartment column could result in one of the compartments being ""dead"" (i.e. with no net flow of slurry through it), resulting in a substantial loss of performance. The quality of mixing in the laboratory column was only reliably improved when the baffle was raised so that its top was positioned above the froth-slurry interface level. It should be possible to increase column recovery substantially with this configuration. The improved residence time distribution also means that columns can be used more effectively in roughing and scavenging applications. IntroductionFlotation columns have generally been used in cleaner applications, starting with their dramatic success at Mines Gaspe(1). Their lack of applications as roughers and scavengers is probably due to their poor residence time distribution (RID) when compared to the conventional cells they would replace. Espinosa-Gomez et al,(2) recently used them in rougher applications but installed three columns in series, presumably to cope with this disadvantage.Dobby and Finch in their seminal papersl(3,4) on the scale-up of flotation columns were the first to quantify the impact of axial mixing on the performance of industrial flotation columns. Laplante et al.(5) collected further data from the literature for column diameter D, ranging between 5 cm and 183 cm, gas superficial velocity Jg ranging between 0.7 cm/s and 2.8 cm/s and per cent solids in the feed S ranging between 3% and 52%. These data were analyzed with reference to the axial mixing model using the boundary conditions for closed vessels (the latter are more appropriate for flotation columns but the model is more difficult to use because analytical solutions for the RID are not available). Double benching has been utilized as an excavation technique in open pit mines for many years. This process involves drilling, blasting, and excavating the material for the design bench height. A second bench is then excavated without the creation of a catch bench, i.e. only minimal offset from the first bench face is allowed when drilling off the second bench. The result is a double high bench face or double bench. When drilling off the second bench, the offset of the drill from the bench face projects the lower bench face into the pit up to an extra five meters. This reduces the maximum attainable bench angle, enhances the probability of rock escaping the catch bench and increases the overall strip ratio. The generally utilized process of trim blasting also can impact on the final bench profile by contributing to blast damage of the face. BHP Billiton Diamonds Inc., Ekati Mine Diamond MineTM, has pioneered the usage of a technique that eliminates this offset. Double benching is accomplished by drilling a single, 30m pre-shear (two 15m benches) to define and protect the final bench profile. This article provides a comparison of the attained face angles obtained in the field utilizing both of the above methods, as well as a comparison with the analytically predicted angles prior to excavation.

With the national focus on energy, the combustible fraction of urban refuse is being extensively considered as a fuel supplement for coal in the generation of heat and power. The objective of these analytical studies by the Bureau of Mines was to determine the concentration of major, minor, and trace elements in the combustible fractions collected at various locations in the Bureau's urban refuse recycling pilot plant located at College Park, Md. The samples processed through the plant were submitted by various municipalities that are considering resource recovery as an alternative to landfill or other means of disposal. Twenty-five elements were determined in samples from six geographic areas and were compared with element concentrations found in typical coal samples.

The Search Minerals Foxtrot project in Labrador is a surface deposit enriched in the highly sought after heavy rare earth elements. Early metallurgical work investigated beneficiation of the rare earth content of the Foxtrot resource using flotation, gravity separation and magnetic separation. The concentrate was then processed by acid baking and water leaching to produce a REE leachate for purification and recovery. The Search Minerals Direct Extraction Process was developed through bypassing the beneficiation process and directly acid treating a coarse crushed ore material prior to water leaching. The result is a simple, low risk technical process for direct recovery. Concurrently, the treatment of the water leach solution was modified to produce a high grade (98.9% total rare earth oxide) product for refining.

The phase transformation of bayan obo ore with high concentration of iron and calcium was reduced at temperatures no more than 1000℃ were investigated in this study. The samples with insufficient carbon were treated at the temperature using a vertical furnace with a thermogravimetry (TG). The mineral phases and content were examined using Xray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) respectively. The complex phases of bayan obo ore transformed to some simple phases after treated with different content of carbon at the same temperature for 10 hours. The result of XRD、 XRF and TG showed that the reduction degree of Fe3O4 phase formation varied with the temperature and the carbon content of bayan obo ore.
