THIS BRIEF PAPER presents the information available on the use of Dorrclon?is in the middling re-grind unit at the lead-zinc mill of Canadian Exploration Limited. The plant throughput is 1,650 tons per twenty-four hours. The flotation feed is ground to 60 per ?Cent passing through 200 mesh. It contains some composite 11articles of sphalerite in calcite, and these reported either in the final zinc concentrate, thus lowering the grade, or in the tailing, with loss of zinc. The re-grind unit was set up in the zinc flotation circuit to liberate the sphalerite from these middling particles, to raise the grade of concentrate and improve recovery. Grinding through 325 mesh should give substantial liberation of locked sphalerite. The middling regrind unit consists of two Dorrdones and one ballmill arranged as shown in the -accompanying flow-sheet. The Hardinge ball-mill, size 7 ft. x 36 in., was free for this use as a result of recent plant expansion. The two Dorrclones were purchased, and the necessary pumps and pipe lines were installed to complete the regrind unit. The unit has been developed over a period of two years by several steps and various flow schemes until reaching tl1e present flow scheme. These steps are not elaborated here, because the changes were made to determine the best product to work on for flotation metallurgy, and not because of the Domrolone classifying ability.

In this paper it is impossible to more than touch on many of the commercial alloys of iron, chromium, and carbon, therefore the discussion is confined to the properties of some of the less well-known alloys with upwards of 20-per cent. chromium. The discussion has been based largely on the strictly engineering aspects of the alloys. Chromium has well-defined effects when added to the iron-carbon system. These effects depend on the amount of chromium added and on the composition of the iron-carbon alloy to which the addition is made, i.e. whether low- or high-carbon steel, cast iron, etc. In the case of the low-carbon steels, the chromium addition, when not in excess of several per cent., appears to exert an influence on the properties by its influence on the critical range. In the higher chromium alloys, the physical properties are influenced chiefly by the formation of new complexes, such as iron-chromium solid solutions and, with higher carbon contents, iron-chromium carbides of great hardness. Examination of the published data1 on the critical range phenomena of chromium-bearing steels up to several per cent. chromium indicates an agreement on the following points:

This shaft, located in the northern anthracite coal-field about 2300 feet southwest from the court-house at Wilkes-Barre, in the County of Luzerne, Pa., is the property of the Lehigh & WilkesBarre Coal Company. The sinking and cribbing to the solid rock (see isometrical view on Plate IX) was conducted by Mr. W. W. Kenrick. Dimensions of the earthwork to the foundation of the cribbing, 51' 2" long, 17' 4" wide, 31' deep. Total amount of excavation in cubic yards, 998.5. Dimensions within the permanent cribbing, 45' 4" long, 11' 16" wide, 31' deep, divided into six parts by buttons 8" x 12", each division, 7' x 11' 6". Permanent cribbing 12" x 12"; temporary cribbing 8" x 10" ; backing, 3" thick ; clay puddle to exclude surface water, 12" thick; conductors, 8" x 5"; lining, 1" thick from top to bottom of the shaft. In the latter part of the year 1871, Mr. H. Murray & Son contracted with the company for the continuation of the work at the rate of four hundred dollars per yard in depth, to a point 100 feet below the Hillman seam of coal; for the succeeding 100 feet the price to be increased twenty-five dollars per yard, and so on until the bottom rock of the Baltimore seam of coal was found. The size of the shaft within the cribbing timbers is 45 feet 4 inches by 11 feet 6 inches, having six divisions of equal dimensions, 7 feet by 11 feet 6 inches, giving room for what is known as the "standard diamond " car, whose capacity when level full is 100 cubic feet, but when loaded by the miner 4 inches above the top contains 112 cubic feet." Two divisions of this shaft are intended for hoisting coal from the Hillman seam, two from the Baltimore seam, one for ventilation, and one for pumps. The works were planned for two pairs of direct-acting, high-pressure engines, twenty-four boilers, and for an estimated output of 2500 tons of coal per day from the two seams.

Discussion of the paper of Woolsey McA. Johnson, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 79, July, 1913, pp. 1137 to 1145. F. L. GRAMMER, Leesburg, Va. (communication to the Secretary *):-Mr. Johnson's paper must interest by suggestion those connected with the " burning " of lime, the production of cement, and the smelting of iron. All iron men know how quickly the impalpable purple ore of wet origin reduces compared to finely ground red hematites of approximately identical composition obtained from Lake lump ores. Most housekeepers appreciate that the several forms of carbon-charcoal, coke, and anthracite, not to include graphite and diamond -have different temperatures of ignition. The temperature usually rises with the density and hardness. Some of the scientific bureaus of the government might appropriately conduct some tests along lines suggested by Mr. Johnson's article. We are unable to say whether the topic lies within the spheres of activity of the Bureau of Mines, the Bureau of Soils (Agricultural Department), the Geological Survey, or the Bureau of Standards. The calcining qualities of limestone is a topic too wide for individual effort and is of wide enough interest to merit government or State activity. It is of interest, as aforesaid, to burners of lime, cement manufacturers, and smelters. The chemical composition of a limestone does not tell all the story -if over 1-in. size lumps. The limestones of Annville and Myerstown, Pa., break at a tap; those on the Hudson above Poughkeepsie .act like "nigger heads." The manager of lime kilns near Lake Champlain told me his fuel consumption was high compared to that at other points. Yet the Hudson and Annville stones were both of greatest purity, being rivaled by only the marble at Rutland, Vt., or some stones near Martinsburg, W. Va. A local kiln operator says the conglomerate or pudding limestones of Loudoun county, Va., act very differently in the kiln from the more normal limestone deposits nearby. The tilted and twisted bedding in the anthracite region tells the story of hard coal origin. We might therefore expect that the limestones of greater geological age or depth or metamorphism

"China is the world's largest steel producer, in order to give environment load comprehensive analysis of steel and iron industry in china using LCA method, the life cycle inventory was compiled and assessment model based on Gabi software was also established. Environmental impact of two different routes ofBF-BOF and the EAF were analyzed respectively and intercompared. The results show that the modem EAF route is superior to the traditional BFBOF route on almost all the environmental impact indexes, which including acidification potential, eutrification potential, global warming potential, ozone depletion potential, etc. In the whole life cycle ofBF-BOF route in China, the transporting process ranks the biggest contribution part to the overall global warming potential, which can be explained by the fossil fuel burning of transporting vehicles during the long distance from Australia to China as the iron ore used are mainly imported from Australia. Apart from transporting process, Coking, blast furnace and iron mining processes could induce great environmental problems, while for the EAF route, the electricity consumption is considerable, which causing large amount ofC02 emission indirectly. Based on the analysis, several further countermeasures were proposed. At the year of2009, China crude steel output of 568 million tons, accounting for 46.6% of the global crude steel production, more than the total sum of crude steel production produced by 20 countries ranked behind. In 2011, China's crude steel production which is expected to be or close to 700 million tons, an increase of 12% than last year, will account for half of the global steel production.The steel industry, however, is intensive resources industry with huge consumptions of energy and water together with mineral resources. Energy consumption of the iron and steel industry has been about 10% of the total energy consumption since 1980. Coal dominants, power next and other energies share least in the energy consumption structure, for example coal accounts for 72.19%, power 23.52% and other total sums less than 5% in the steel energy consumption at year of 2002[2,3]. The consumption of coal discharges much emission of CO2, yet emissions of C02 in China steel industry, secondary only to the power and cement industry, ranked the third, and the coal dominant energy structure and its process have a close relationship. The aim of this research is to target steel production of typical blast furnace-converter (BFBOF) and electric furnace, using GABI software to evaluate and analyze resources and environment influence of LCA, directing at the existing problems in the development of China steel as well as finding the possible way to improve ability of reducing pollution and energy consumption in order to realize the sustainable development of the steel industry [ 4-7]."

HE majority of liquidus and solidus surfaces in phase diagrams have been determined by the conventional cooling- and heating-curve techniques.' These techniques have two main shortcomings: 1) the solidus may be in considerable error due to the difficulty involved in completely homogenizing the solid and 2) the determination of liquidus and solidus in more than a two-component system does not enable one to determine tie-lines connecting the specific equilibrium solid and liquid compositions. However, in a recent paper by one of the authors,' a method was suggested whereby the liquidus and solidus surfaces plus tie-lines in an n-component system may be determined. This method utilizes a controlled solidification technique and assumes that interface equilibrium exists during freezing. The present work was undertaken with a twofold purpose; first, to determine the liquidus and solidus lines in the pseudo-binary system Bi2Te3-Bi2Se3 by heating- and cooling-curve techniques and, second, to determine the partition coefficients of Te and Se in the BizTe3-,Sex system by controlled solidifica- tion techniques. The two sets of results can be compared to test the accuracy of the controlled solidification method. EXPERIMENTAL I—The starting materials for this study were 997999 pct Bi, Te, and Se, obtained from the American Smelting and Refining Co. The compounds BizTe, and Bi2Se3 were each prepared by melting together stoichiometric amounts of the elements, followed by twelve zone-refining passes. This produced homogeneous bars of the compounds for use in the phase-diagram studies. The apparatus used to obtain heating and cooling curves is illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. The alloy samples were located in a graphite crucible placed in a stainless steel canister. The canister was supported in a heavily lagged pit furnace by a device which oscillated the canister about its vertical axis at a frequency of about 3 cycles per sec during heating and cooling-curve runs. The graphite crucible was designed to minimize the thermal coupling of the sample to the furnace. The Helen Mine, of the Algoma Steel Corporation, in the Michipicoten district, Ontario, Canada, has produced more than 6,240,290 tons of iron ore. Prior to and during World War I, 2,823,369 gross tons of brown ore were shipped, and from 1939 to the end of the 1944 season, 3,416,921 gross tons of siderite ore were produced from open-pit operations. Brief descriptions are given of the nature of the ore, the mining methods employed and the manner of treatment of the ore. Shipment of the finished product, known as Algoma sinter, is made to blast furnaces in both Canada and the United States. The iron-ore bodies—i.e., the oxide ores of the Old Helen and the siderite of the New Helen—are a part of a tabular shaped area of iron formation that extends over a length of more than 100,000 ft. and has a maximum width of 1000 ft. The ores are considered to be a product of introduction of iron-bearing material accompanied by replacement of the rocks already present. It is shown that introduction took place subsequent to the development of the major folded structures. It is believed the iron-bearing material emanated from an igneous source. Introduction The Michipicoten mining district derives its name from the Indian word1 meaning "place of bold promontories" or "region of big places," and anyone who has visited this part of Canada will agree that the district is well named. In 1897, there was active prospecting for gold in the district and the Ontario Bureau of Mines2 opened a recording office at the Hudson's Bay post at Michipicoten River. In the summer of 1897, Ben Boyer, probably searching for gold, discovered an outcrop of brown iron ore at the east end of a small lake, less than 8 miles, in an air line, northeast of the nearest point on Michipicoten Harbour. In the following year, extensive surface exploration and diamond drilling disclosed a commercial body of nonbessemer brown ore, possibly 700 ft. long and 200 ft. wide, of about the following analysis:3 Fe (natural), 57.15 per cent; S, dried at 212°F.. 0.113; SiO2, dried at 212°F., 4.00; P, dried at 212°F., 0.125. The property (Figs. 1-3) was taken over by E. V. Clergue and ultimately was transferred to the Algoma Steel Corporation. The Algoma Central Railway shortly afterward built its line from Michipicoten Harbour to the mine, together with an ore dock at the Harbour. Thus, within three years of its discovery, the mine had adequate shipping facilities and a market for its ore. When establishing an underwater testing site for the energy measurements of the explosives, the dimensions of the measuring pool have to be measured to find out what is the maximum weight for the test charge. Secondly one has to decide the distance between the pressure gauge and the shooting point. Thirdly the pool has to be calibrated because of the reflections of the explosions by measuring the bubble periods of the calibration charges. The calibration shots can also be used to estimate the minimum weight of the explosive charge for the reliable energy measurements by calculating the shock, gas heave and total energy values and their standard deviations.

It is deMonstrated that quenching from an elevated temperataupe accelerates the grain boundary relaxation in two solid solutions (aAg-Zn and a Cu-Al). This result is consistent with the proposal that, in solid solutions, grain boundary relaxation occurs by a mechanism of' self diffusion. Nevertheless, an alternative possibilitg, that quenching introduces vacancies into the boundary itself, must also be considered. THE phcnomenon of grain boundary relaxation has been well known for many years,1,2 yet the mechanism of this process is very poorly understood. One of the most interesting suggestions which relates to the mechanism of grain boundary relaxation was that of Ke,3 who claimed that the activation energy for grain boundary relaxation and for lattice self diffusion were essentially the same. The implication is therefore that the elementary step in the two processes is the same. This suggestion is particularly startling in view of the fact that activation energy for self diffusion along a grain boundary is very significantly lower than that for volume self-diffusion. Later evidence5-7 showed that there really are two grain boundary peaks, one which appears in high-purity metals, and the other (which develops at a higher temperature than the first) which appears in solid solutions beginning at solute concentrations in the range of 0.1 pct. Data for silver6 show that Kg's hypothesis is surely incorrect for the grain boundary peak in the high-purity metal, since it has an activation energy of only 22 kcal per mole, but that the hypothesis may still be correct for the grain boundary peak in various silver solid solutions, for which activation energies in the range 40 to 50 kcal per mole are observed. If the elementary step in the grain boundary relaxation process were the same as that for self-diffusion, it would be expected that the relaxation process could be hastened by quenching, 2.c. by introducing a non-equilibrium excess of lattice vacancies. Such a quenching effect has already been demonstrated in the case of another anelastic relaxation process, viz., the Zener relaxation effect. The Zener effect, which occurs in essentially all solid solutions, may be attributed to the reorientation of pairs of solute atoms in the presence of an applied shear stress,' and therefore must take place by means of a volume diffusion mechanism. The hastening of this process through quenching9 has been one way of demonstrating that atom movements in the lattice take place through a defect mechanism, presumably single vacancies. In order to see if the grain boundary relaxation is affected by quenching, it is particularly convenient to compare the grain boundary relaxation with the Zener effect, by choosing a specimen for which both relaxation effects appear. Specifically, a fine-grained sample of a solid solution shows in the curve of internal friction vs temperature, first a peak due to the Zener effect, then a second rise (and eventually a peak at substantially higher temperatures) due to the grain boundary relaxation. The same phenomena are also observable in static anelastic measurements, such as creep at very low stress levels. Thus, for the same fine-grained solid solution, the creepstrain, when plotted against log time, falls on a sigmodial curve with a sharp inflection point, due to the Zener effect, which is followed by a second rise and inflection resulting from the grain boundary relaxation. To look for a quenching effect, static measurements are preferable to the dynamic internal friction measurements, due to the fact that quenching effects tend to anneal out too rapidly at the temperatures at which the internal friction is measured.9 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Creep experiments in torsion were carried out in an apparatus similar to that described by Ke1, whereby a wire is held under constant torque and its angular displacement is observed as a function of time. The alloy Ag-30 at. pct Znwas selected because of the large Zener relaxation that it displays. The two samples used were a "coarse grained" wire with a mean grain size about twice the diameter of the wire (diam = 0.032 in.), and a "fine-grained" wire which had several grains across the diameter. In Fig. 1 a comparison is made of the creep curves at 160°C of these two samples after they had been cooled slowly from 400°C. Curve A, which represents the coarsegrained sample, shows a unique relaxation process due to the Zener relaxation, with a relaxation time, T , in the vicinity of 100 sec. Curve B, which represents the behavior of the fine-grained sample, on the other hand, shows first the same relaxation process as that in A, followed by a turning up of the curve which corresponds to the onset of a second overlap-

INTRODUCTION NUMEROUS examples of troubled zones, interfering with the normal development of coal seams, have been cited in the literature. From a geological point of view they can be subdivided into structural and sedimentary troubles. Of the latter type, wash-outs are usually the most bothersome. Some years ago, A. A. Thiadens and the author arrived at the conclusion that they represent fossil river-beds. A method of predicting the course of these rivers was developed, which has been successfully applied in the Netherlands coal measures, and more recently by P. Stassen in some of the Belgian coalfields and by the author in the Sydney coalfield. The Sydney coalfield has long .drawn the attention of geologists, and three main periods of systematic geological research may be distinguished. The first period, 1872-1900, is covered by the studies of Ch. Robb and H. Fletcher (32, 10-13) (1). Their detailed sections of the cliffs have lost nothing in value, and are frequently consulted today.

INTRODUCTION Soft, near normally consolidated clays generally provide ideal conditions for tunneling using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) shields. It is easy to turn the clay into a low permeability, viscous spoil that can be pressurized to maintain the required face pres-sure. Despite this, there are records of relatively large, and often quite variable, surface settlements over EPB driven tunnels in soft clay. To understand this variation it is necessary to identify the various factors that contribute to settlement. Tunnels in soft clay are ideal for study these effects in the field, as an unsupported void will close almost immediately, due to the low shear strength of the soil. In the short term, deformation in a soft clay will occur at constant volume, so short term surface settlements can be related to movements at tunnel level. In this paper, data will be used from EPB driven tunnels in Singapore marine clay. In all of the cases discussed the lining consisted of precast concreted segmental rings erected in the tail of the shield. The marine clay in Singapore has been studied, among others, by Tanaka et al.(2001). The clay typically has a plasticity index of 40 to 60, and the undrained shear strength (SU ) can be derived from: SU = 0.22 svo' where svo' is the current vertical effective stress. Figure 1 shows a summary of undrained strength/depth plots used for design on two sections of Singapore’s North East Line. The stability of a tunnel in clay can be assessed by comparing the stability number (N) of the tunnel with the stability number at total collapse (NTC). The stability number can be calculated from the equation: N = (?Z + q – Pt)/SU where: ? = the average unit weight of the ground above the springline of the tunnel Z = the depth to the springline of the tunnel from the ground surface q = the surcharge Pt = the support pressure within the tunnel The stability number at total collapse depends on the size, geometry and depth of the tunnel, and typically ranges between 5 and 9. Charts for assessing the number at total collapse are provided in Kimura and Mair (1981), based on the testing of model tunnels in a geotechnical centrifuge. Detailed pit and outcrop mapping of sedimentary rocks and their alteration is providing insights into fluvial processes that operated during deposition of the world-class Yandi channel iron deposit. Five prominent rock units are traceable along the strike of the Yandi deposit and permit correlation of open pits and mesas. These units are the Eastern Clay Horizon (ECH), granule-pebble conglomerate (GPC), Main Ore Zone (MOZ), Basal Denatured Zone (BDZ), and Basal Conglomerate (BCONG). The upper part of the deposit is characterised by a transition from spheroidal grains with well-defined rims and nuclei to larger, subangular grains with poorly developed rims. The distribution of rock types and sedimentary features such as lateral accretion surfaces, channel scours and fills, graded bedding, cross-bedding, reworked horizons, and slumped strata are common at Yandi and indicate deposition in a fluvial system. Bedding is well preserved despite modification of original grain shapes and textures and introduction of secondary silica and alumina in the upper part of the deposit. The high lithic and clay content of the GPC and ECH possibly reflect changes in source area or a hiatus in deposition of the Marillana Pisolite. The MOZ and the BDZ may be the same depositional unit with the latter recording alteration by groundwater and destruction of primary textures and other sedimentary features. The BCONG is a channel lag deposit reworked during deposition of the MOZ. This interpretation is supported by the dominance of basement-derived lithic clasts, the presence of BCONG clasts, the variable thickness of the unit along strike and the presence of BCONG clasts in the BDZ.

A method is described whereby the true financial value of each constituent of each concentrate can be calculated. Each value is then compared with what this value would be in a perfect separation. The difference in each case represents the loss incurred by each aspect of an inefficient separation. The relative magnitudes of these losses indicate those avenues of plant investigation and research that offer the highest potential reward. The metallurgical efficiency of a concentration operation is difficult to express because there are two criteria of performance, namely, grade and recovery. Neither of these alone gives any indication of the effectiveness of an operation and, if they are combined in some formula, it must be empirical and unreliable because of many external factors. Since milling is an operation performed as one step in the most profitable overall method of producing a metal or other end product, the main objective of mill operation should be to make a maximum contribution to this maximum profit. When concentrates are sold to custom smelters, the income from the operation, and the costs, may be calculated. When concentrates are further processed by another division of the same company, and there is no formal financial relationship between, say, the milling and smelting divisions of the company, the mill superintendent's job is less well defined. But even so, if the mill superintendent works as though he were selling his concentrates, and uses reasonable, if fictitious, conditions of sale, then he can get a good indication of the effectiveness of his operation by calculating his "Economic Recovery". ECONOMIC RECOVERY This is a method used as a basis of operation by several mills and has been described in the literature. Very briefly, the "standard" of operation is taken as that of a mill separating the ore into perfectly pure concentrates with 100% recovery of each mineral in its respective concentrate. For example, a 4%Pb, 4% Zn ore (galena and sphalerite), would provide a lead concentrate weighing 4.62% of the feed and assaying 86.6% Pb and a zinc concentrate weighing 5.97% of the feed and assaying 67.1 % zinc. These perfect concentrates are (hypothetically) shipped to the appropriate smelters, freight and treatment charges and payments calculated, and the net return obtained. This is the optimum financial return for the operation of the mill and is used as the standard. Now the return for the actual, real-life, mill operation is calculated in the same way, and the ratio of the two is termed the Economic Recovery. Many additions and modifications may be made in any particular case. For example, if the zinc mineral is marmatite, the optimum grade of the zinc concentrate may be set lower than 67.1%. If silver is present, it will be recovered 100% in the lead concentrate in the perfect operation. Similarly, cadmium will be recovered 100% with the sphalerite. Mr. Weiss' paper' mentions a case where, because of extremely fine intergrowth between the valuable mineral, chalcocite, and pyrite, the optimum grade of copper concentrate was taken as 45% Cu instead of the theoretical 80%. Each operation will present its own possibilities in this way.

This paper describing the mining practice of the Hecla and Star mines, both located at Burke, Idaho, is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. It is partly a revision of articles by the author appearing in volume 72 of the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, published in 1925, and in the June 1928, issue of the American Mining Congress Journal. About 26,000 tons per month of lead ore is produced at the Hecla mine. Costs at the mine are given for the year 1928. Stoping operations in the Star mine have covered such a short period, during which time the abnormal expenses of starting were incurred, that they are not given in this paper.

"The authors developed an online tube rheometer to supplement a Netzsch MiniCer (Netzsch GmbH, Germany) stirred media mill in order to monitor online the rheological characteristics of the suspension and therefore the result of grinding during the process. Previously it was demonstrated that the above measuring system was working appropriately based on the preliminary tests. The product related stress model was applied for the evaluation of the grinding results. It was found that the suspension concentration and the change of the material properties during grinding, consequently the rheology strongly affects the grinding result, i.e. specific surface area, median particle size as well as specific grinding energy. The tested model limestone – water suspensions behaved Newtonian initially, then after a given grinding time their properties had changed and they become Bingham plastic. INTRODUCTIONStirred media milling now is a common practice to produce fine and ultrafine granular materials for different purposes. With an increasing demand of ultrafine powders for industries (Kwade, 1999), wet and dry ultrafine grinding has been increasingly used in various fields, such as minerals (Mucsi, Rácz, & Mádai, 2013)(Rácz, 2014), ceramic materials (Becker & Schwedes, 1999), pigments (Ohenoja, Illikainen, & Niinimäki, 2013), chemical products (Baláž et al., 2013), microorganisms (Kwade & Schwedes, 2002) and pharmaceutics (Afolabi, Akinlabi, & Bilgili, 2014). It is well known that suspension rheology affects the wet comminution of materials (He, Wang, & Forssberg, 2006a). The rheological behaviour of the suspension containing the ground particles might indicate the level of interparticle interaction or aggregation and therefore it is an important variable factor of the process control (Muster & Prestidge, 1995). The influence of the rheological behaviour of mineral suspensions on their grindability has attracted more and more interests and attention, especially on ultrafine grinding performance (He, Wang, & Forssberg, 2006b) (Bernhardt et al., 1999). However, there are still many issues concerning the machine and the process for the different applications. When grinding is effective and the particle size range decreases significantly, the circulating suspension is becoming typically non-Newtonian. The changed rheological behaviour and the increasing rheological material parameters can negatively affect the grinding efficiency; therefore it is an important issue. Ultrafine stirred media milling as well as solid-liquid two phase flow have been studied for a long time at the Institute of Raw Materials Preparation and Environmental Processing of the University of Miskolc. Regarding ultrafine grinding the research is focusing on the description of materials’ grindability (energetic aspects) both in wet and dry circumstances (Mucsi et al., 2013; Rácz, 2014). Concerning rheology, the three measuring pipes tube rheometer was developed decades ago (Faitli & Gombköto, 2015). So far many different solid materials from all over the world had been tested in this rheometer (Faitli & Gombköto, 2015). Main aim of these tests was to gain basic data for large scale hydraulic transport applications. Among the many stirred media mills there is a Netzsch MiniCer mill at the Institute. It was reasonable to combine the two fields together, and the goal of the research presented in this paper is to develop an online tube rheometer for the Netzsch mill and to carry out grinding and rheological testing simultaneously."

The Mexican oil fields, during 1921, produced in round numbers 203,000,000 bbl. of which 176,000,000 bbl., or 86 per cent., were exported, the bulk of these exports, or about 73.3 per cent., going to the United States. The Mexican exports were divided by grades as follows: Light crude, 47.0 per cent.; heavy crude, 22.0 per cent.; tops, 3.5 per cent.; fuel oil from light crude, 24.0 per cent. The balance, or 31/2 per cent., includes the bunker fuel shipments and the coastwise trade in Mexico, which is not classified as to grades. The figures show that, in importance, the light-oil fields form about 75 per cent. of the Mcxican petroleum industry. The production of the Panuco field has followed the general history of the American fields, and its gradual decline, which is at present foreshadowed, may be estimated as well as its ultimate economic life. On the other hand, the behavior of the light-oil fields to the south is unlike any in the world so far discovered, and as a result we have concentrated overproductions followed by sudden droughts, both sometimes equally unexpected. The coming in of two or three gushers within adequate pipe-line facilities will flood the market with 100,000 bbl. or more a day, while the flooding by water of a particular pool will, in a few weeks, remove from the market one-half the total production of the Mexican fields.

Weak, brittle, three-rayed crumbling stars Here the suggestion is that as the air-hardening temperature rises it causes two prominent effects, one helpful and the other harmful, the increase of the former exceeding that; of the latter up to a certain point, at which the steel is most useful, and then in turn being outrun by it. The first is the progressive dissolving of the free carbide in the austenite, increasing the stability of the red-hard state. The second is the progressive coarsening of the grains, and thickening of the intergranular cement, developing at last into spandril-like three-rayed stars of the 1,288° specimen. (2,350° F.) of Plate D, thus giving clear proof of incipient fusion, that is of crossing the solidus. This causes intergranular weakness. The individual grains may have great red-hardness, but they do not cohere. They approach the condition of a bag of emery grains.

In May 1975 the U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted with the University of Missouri-Rolla, Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center to develop a Hydrominer modification to a longwall shearer unit, wherein the rotating pick-laced drums and connecting gear drives are replaced by a water jet cutting ahead. The concept of the water jet cutting head is based on using the high localized energy of the water jets to isolate a slice of coal by cutting a slot under, at the back of, and at the top of the web. The plow blade of the head then advances into the cut and wedges the coal cantilever over onto the conveyor [(Fig. 1)]. There were several potential advantages foreseen for the system; perhaps the most significant were the elimination of coal dust from the working area and the ability, with a variation in nozzle geometry, to cut webs of greater depth with a small increase in haulage horsepower. The University initially designed the head, based on experiments carried out in the laboratory, under an earlier Bureau of Mines contract. The experiments showed that it was more advantageous to work at a pressure of 68.9 mPa (10,000 psi) with an estimated flow rate of 3.15 X 10 - 8 m3/s (50 gpm) than go to the higher pressures and lower flow rates which have been advocated elsewhere.

The Bureau of Mines explored the Three Kids deposit in 1941 as part of a strategic minerals program. Earlier mining and exploration had established the presence of a substantial tonnage of medium-grade wad ore, and drilling and sampling by the Bureau of Mines, in collaboration with the Federal Geological Survey, indicated an additional tonnage such that development and exploitation became more clearly feasible. Private interests, with Government support, undertook to produce metallurgical-grade manganese. The present paper describes the Bureau of Mines exploration and subsequent development. Manganese in the Three Kids area is found in one of the lower members of the Muddy Creek formation in a bed of fine sandstone and silt, which outcrops around the north edge of the River Mountains and generally dips 20° to 40° away from the hills. There is considerable variation in the thickness and grade of the ore. The ore is light weight, having a density of 1.2 to 2.

NORMAN B. PILLING (author's reply to discussion *).-The discussion by Mr, Bassett raised one or two points that deserve further discussion. The printed figure for the lead content of the copper used was 0.015 per cent. and not 0.15 per cent., upon which his comment was based. A copper having the latter figure would, of course, be quite unusual. Mr. Bassett takes exception to the writer's statement regarding the distribution of cuprous oxide in wrought copper and states that "the FIG. 1.--ROLLED AND ANNEALED SHEET. ETCHED WITH AMMONIA AND HYDROGEN PEROXIDE. X 75. eutectic of copper with cuprous oxide is usually found between the crystals of pure copper, whether in the cast or the wrought form." While it is very well known that during the solidification of cast copper the cuprous oxide is segregated completely as an envelope of cuprous oxide-copper eutectic around the crystals of copper free from oxide, it is the writer's opinion that, as a result of repeated rolling, this eutectic structure is quite destroyed and the small particles of cuprous oxide become widely scattered, and in the recrystallization following, during annealing, the rearrangement of the grain boundaries takes place with much indifference to the actual distribution of these particles. In the accompanying micrograph, taken from a rolled and annealed sheet, the random distribution of the small cuprous-oxide particles with reference to the location of the grain boundaries may be seen.
