In connection with investigations relating to fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, the causes of accidents in coal mines, the geologic relations of coal beds, and the character of the coal and the value of the fuel in the public lands, many mine samples of coal are analyzed each year in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines. The systematic collection and analysis of coal samples in connection with investigations of fuels was begun in 1904 at the Government fuel-testing plant at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, and was under the direction of the United States Geo- logical Survey for six years. Descriptions of the coal samples col- lected in connection with these investigations between the beginning of this work, July 1, 1904, and the transfer of the fuel-testing and mine-accident investigations to the Bureau of Mines, July 1, 1910, were compiled and published in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 22. The present bulletin presents analyses and descriptions of samples collected during the fiscal years 1911 to 1913. In order that the material in this bulletin may be used to supplement that presented in Bulletin 22, the same plan of geographical classification has been fol- lowed, the analyses and descriptions of the samples being grouped in alphabetical order according to the State, county, and town near which the mines or prospects sampled are situated.

This paper represents the results of a study to determine the source, mode of occurrence and conditions influencing the flow and liberation of large volumes of inflammable gas in the Pocahontas No. 4 coal bed in southern West Virginia. A study of this kind is of interest in connection with mine ventilation, because in the removal of gases from coal mines it is very important to know the origin, the occurrence and laws of gas flow. The study was started in April, 1931, and the data and observations were obtained throughout a period of 15 months of field work. Geology The country where this study was made is mountainous and rugged; great cliffs, precipitous slopes and deep narrow gorges are found throughout the area. The outcropping rocks consist of stratified layers of sandstone, shale, limestone and deposits of coal of Carboniferous age. The Pottsville series of the Pennsylvanian, lying at the base of this period, cover the greater portion of the area. A stratigraphic section of the Pocahontas group of the Pottsville series is shown in Fig. 3. The older rocks outcrop in the extreme southeastern part of the area, but are under drainage in the central and northern parts due to the gradual northwest dip of the strata. The structure has a general northeast-southwest trend (Fig. 1). North of Dry Fork anticline the strata have been only slightly disturbed by movements of the earth's crust; it is now a long monocline. Southeast1 of Dry Fork anticline the strata are warped into great arches and deep troughs and are broken by overthrust faults. All of this folding is probably the result of the intense folding associated with the formation of the Appalachian Mountains. Discussion on the design of roof support in tailgates has often been conducted without a clear statement of the stress and failure conditions acting. There is general agreement that in the tailgate the vertical stresses above the chain pillar increase. Within the stress 'bulb' associated with this vertical stress increase there will be an increase in horizontal stress. This does not mean that the horizontal stresses acting across the roof line increase. In retreat longwalling, the proximity of the tailgate to the adjacent goof results in a substantial reduction in the horizontal stress field acting in the immediate roof. Furthermore, at the face/tailgate corner the onset of significant compression of the chain pillar. if it is designed to yield, will result in a further reduction in the horizontal stresses in the immediate roof. It is suggested that this latter mechanism can cause the horizontal stresses in the immediate roof to go to zero. Whatever, the horizontal stress acting across the roof in the face/tailgate corner will be significantly lower than in the face/maingate corner. The implication of the model is that support design in tailgates should be based on the assumption of zero horizontal (in fact tensile) stresses. How the roof behaves in a tensile stress environment is a function of joint spacing and orientation compared to excavation width and direction. It is speculated that the empirical relationship between support density and roof rating results from the relationship between joint spacing and bedding spacing. The onset of stress reductions has major implications to the design of cable and bolt anchorages in the tailgate environment.

In general, the direction of the maximum horizontal stress in the eastern United States is fairly well defined. However, the variation of the magnitudes of the horizontal stresses is not very well understood. Because the horizontal stresses cause severe ground control problems in underground coal and limestone mines throughout the eastern United States a more complete understanding of how the magnitudes vary would be useful for developing mine design strategies to combat horizontal stress related ground control problems. Therefore, in this National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) study, the variation of the magnitude of the horizon stresses in sedimentary deposits in the eastern and Midwestern United States are examined with respect to two factors, the elastic modulus of the rock and the site depth. Stress measurements from thirty-seven sites are used in the evaluation. Examining the applied excess strains indicates that the eastern United States can be, separated into high and low strain zones. For most of the eastern United States the maximum applied excess or tectonic strain ranges from only 300 to 550 micro strains. However, there is one area, a portion of the Beckley seam in the central Appalachian region where the strains are significantly higher than the other regions. In this higher strain zone, the maximum applied tectonic strains range from 700 to 1,000 micro strains. Regression models for each zone based on the elastic modulus can explain between 83 to 85% of the variation of the maximum horizontal stress. Because one region, the northern Appalachian district, has strains that are about 20% higher than the other regions in the low strain zone, multiple strain models based on geographic regions were developed for the low strain zone that can explain 87 to 91% of the maximum horizontal stress variation with the elastic modulus. Depth was found not to be a significant causal factor in any increase in the horizontal stress even though the site depths ranged from 275 to 2,500 ft. Beyond a theoretical increase, based on Poisson’s effect and gravity, no other increase in the horizontal stress with depth can be justified with this data. The most significant factor controlling the variation of the maximum horizontal stress is the elastic modulus of the rock, not the overburden depth.

This report aims to discuss, from the viewpoint of the mining geologist, the bearing of topographic and geologic conditions on cer- tain problems that arose in the construction of the Panama Canal. T+ is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to engineer- ing liters ure because it presents information that shows how geology and topography must be considered by the mining engineer in plan- ning excavations and in removing loose material and solid rock in the safest and most efficient manner. The printing of this bulletin has been approved by the governor of the Panama Canal, as it was impracticable for the Panama Canal to give this information to the general public in any of its publications. The "sword cut" of Goethals and his men did not sever the Isth- mian barrier; it merely clove the hills to a depth of 40 feet above sea level. This cut and the great areas of low valleys at both ends of it have been covered with fresh water to the 85-foot level. This high-level lake held by dams at either end, the 85-foot locks, by which ships enter it, and the dredged approaches from the two oceans constitute the Panama Canal. In the preparation of accurate estimates concerning the cost of large excavations information regarding the geologic conditions, as obtained by a study of natural features, is necessary. Drill holes and test pits will furnish supplementary geologic information, but without a gen- eral knowledge of the geologic conditions it will not be possible for the constructing engineer to answer such questions as the following: (1) What rock units will be encountered in the excavation and in what proportion? (2) What will be the cost of drilling each for blasting (3) How far apart and how deep must the drill holes be to efficiently break the rock of each to the proper size-not too fine nor yet too coarse? In this connection jointing, fissuring, bedding, toughness, and other physical characteristics must be considered (4) How steep will the slopes of the excavation stand, and to what extent will they wash and trench on exposure to the atmosphere? (5) What proportion of the material to be excavated is of such physical character that it may be utilized in any other part of the project, such as in concrete construction, road making, wharves, breakwaters, riprap work, etc.

F LUSHING the early slag from a stationary open Fhearth having a high percentage of hot metal in its charge is necessary in order to remove silica from the system. The flush slag is strongly oxidizing and is somewhat acidic. It has, however, considerable capacity to extract phosphorus from the bath and it also removes considerable manganese. It seems probable that factors which control the distribution of phosphorus and manganese between slag and metal in the refining period also should be dominant in the flush and postflush periods. Several studies, as summarized elsewhere,1,2 support the viewpoint that conditions closely approaching equilibrium for these elements are rather readily established during the refining period. Over the years these studies have repeatedly demonstrated that 1—high slag v01ume, 2—low bath and slag temperature, 3—basic slag, and 4—strongly oxidizing slag favor rapid elimination of phosphorus from the bath to the slag. They also show that the following conditions favor retention of manganese in the bath: 1—low slag volume, 2—high bath and slag temperature, 3— basic slag, and 4—minimum oxidizing power of slag. When it is considered that the flush slag often carries as high as 75 pct of the manganese charged and only 25 to 60 pct of the phosphorus charged, it is evident that in removing silica much manganese is sacrificed but phosphorus removal is far from conplete. Because of overriding circumstances, this is accepted in most operations and actually it is considered to be inevitable. This may account for the fact that little attention has been paid to conditions affecting the elimination of phosphorus and manganese in the flush slag. A recent study of the behavior of various charge oxides has developed considerable information on the flush and postflush periods. Because the data are felt to be of general interest, they have been brought together and Presented in this paper. The object is to show the various factors in the flush and postflush periods which influence elimination of phosphorus and manganese. Physical Conditions During and After Flushing Physical conditions existing during the flush vary from plant to plant, from shop to shop, from furnace to furnace, and even from heat to heat. They are strongly influenced by the physical and chemical character of the charge oxide which is ordinarily necessary to provide sufficient oxidizing power early in the heat. Invariably the period is characterized by a vigorous reaction between the principal re-actants: the hot metal being added and the charge oxide. During the flush, it is probable that the slag acts to some extent as an oxidizer; but, because of the critical influence of the behavior of the charge oxid'e on flushing action, it seems apparent that the oxide itself is the dominant oxidizer. Fig. 1 shows the course of two heats which were selected as being typical of the group studied. Heat A was charged with 55 pet hot metal, based on the total metallics charged, and heat B had 57 pct hot metal. As indicated in Table I and Fig. 1, the melt-down slag, which is not usually voluminous and which is principally FeO, expands greatly in volume and will show rather high levels of SiO2, MnO, and P2O5 very soon after the beginning of the hot metal addition. Simultaneously, large volumes of CO are liberated which cause violent mixing of slag and metal. It is of interest to note that the time required to bring carbon down to a low level is very much longer than that required for the removal of silicon, manganese, or phosphorus. At the end of flush, carbon in the bath is still approximately 2 pct. When strongly reducing hot metal is brought into contact with strongly oxidizing conditions within the furnace! it is probable that the rate of mass transfer to the slag (and atmosphere) of silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and carbon initially depends principally on the rates at which the two participating phases are brought into contact That is, it depends on the nature of the various reactions. Later in the flush period, when the scrap is virtually all dissolved and the action of the bath has settled down to a steady and somewhat gentle boil, it is likely that other factors, such as the transfer of oxygen across the slag-metal interface, become dominant. The temperature of the slag-metal system is far from uniform. Heat is being driven by the flame down through the slag. Bubbling and surging of the metal also frequently brings portions of the bath in contact with the flame. At areas of contact between the ore and liquid metal, or slag and liquid metal, the oxidizing reactions generate much heat. On the other hand, scrap is being melted which tends to absorb large quantities of heat. Because the liquid bath is high in carbon, the steel scrap is brought into solution rapidly. This can proceed at a rather low temperature; and until much of the scrap has been taken into solution, the bath temperature would not be expected to increase appreciably. Consideration of these factors leads to the conclusion that during the flush period the slag should be rather hot and the bath relatively cold. Both observation and temperature measurements bear this out. Experimental Data The extended program of charge oxide evaluation permitted study of the widely varying conditions existing during the flushing period. Slag and metal analyses and bath temperatures reported herein (Tables I and 11) were obtained toward the latter portion of the work. Four different types of charge oxide, sinter, two types of hydraulic cement-bonded soft ores, and a pyrobonded agglomerate were used in the study. Although the heats reported were from only one 205 ton furnace, they show variations in flush slag analyses all the way from 25 pct FeO, which is typical with the use of a hard natural charge ore, to 45 pct FeO which resulted when a very poorly agglomerated fine ore was used. S. F. Emmons, Washington, D. C.: Mr. Malcolmson's paper on the intensely interesting deposits of the Sierra Mojada creates a strong desire to visit the region so well described. Although it is difficult to intelligently discuss a locality that one has never seen, I cannot refrain from offering some remarks in the nature of a tentative suggestion: 1. Age of Beds.—Mr. Malcolmson speaks of the enormous thickness of limestone forming the Sierra Mojada as belonging to the Carboniferous series. If this is not a typographical error, it seems that he should present some evidence for such age, for Chism,* in his previous article on the district, says the only fossils found there were said to be Cretaceous; and it is well known by the investigations of R. T. Hill and others that the great thickness of limestone in this part of Mexico is of Cretaceous age. 2. Structure of Mountains.—Mr. Malcolmson presents good reasons for thinking that the structure of the two related mountain masses (Sierra Mojada and Sierra Planchada) is not the simple anticlinal fold given by Mr. Chism's section, it being evident that there has been faulting as well as flexure. I venture to add that the facts presented by Mr. Malcolmson seem to suggest the possibility that, instead of being simply an eroded anticline, the valley between the two ranges may have been formed, in part at least, by the irregular faulting down of the intermediate block, on the surface of which the volcanic breccia had originally accumulated at a higher level. The sections of the Exploradora and the San Josh mines, in the smooth surface of the contact, with clay selvages and the occasional slickensides, certainly suggest a structural fault between the limestone and breccia. The following notes are presented in an endeavor to point out the disadvantages attending the use of chrome brick in reverberatory furnaces in which are conducted the treatment of materials of such a nature that absorption by the brick is of too great value to be wasted, and these values must be recovered, if possible, in order to prevent metal losses that can not be tolerated. Several years ago one of the large Eastern copper refineries decided to utilize basic material in place of siliceous material in the walls of their reverberatory furnaces for the treatment of very foul blister copper, as the latter rapidly corroded the siliceous linings. It was also expected that there would be less slag formation, with a consequent decrease in the cost of treatment and a reduction in the metal losses. Magnesite brick were first used, but while the corrosive action of the foul material was greatly reduced, and the amount of slag formed was very much less, the magnesite proved to be unsatisfactory in certain parts of the furnace, because of its tendency to crack and spall badly when subjected to the alternate heating and cooling that takes place in a reverberatory refining furnace. This made many repairs necessary, and consequent frequent interruption in the operation of the furnace, which, together with the high price of the magnesite brick, ran up the cost of maintenance to an unreasonable amount. It was, therefore, decided to substitute chrome brick for magnesite brick in the parts of the furnace affected. The results, as far as the reverberatory furnace was concerned, were very satisfactory. The corrosion due to the action of the foul blister was small and the amount of slag formed was no greater than when using magnesite, and the tendency to crack and spall shown by the magnesite was eliminated. Gradually the use of chrome brick was extended to all furnaces, those treating blister copper as well as those melting cathodes, and the results were so satisfactory that the siliceous roofs were replaced by roofs of chrome brick except in certain places where experience showed a more satisfactory performance on the part of the silica brick. It was immediately recognized, for both the magnesite and the chrome brick, that the metal absorption was very heavy, but it was felt that the

Core experiments with radioactive tracers are reported in which an artificial radioactive material, radiovanadium, was used in aqueous solution in a study of the mobility of connate water. Sandstone cores saturated with active water were first oil-flooded to simulate virgin sand conditions in which the pores are filled with oil and connate water. They were then subjected to flooding with inactive water. Measurements were made of the activity of various portions of the effluent as well as the activity of the core after the flooding process was completed. In additional experiments the distribution of activity along the core was measured during the flooding process. In still other experiments direct flooding tests were made on cores fully saturated with active water. In all cases it was found that after injecting into the core a volume of inactive water equal to a pore volume, the effluent contained more than 80 per cent of the active content originally in the core. It is felt that these results imply a high degree of mobility of the connate water when subjected to flooding, although at least a partial contribution of the effect of tracer transfer within the core cannot be definitely excluded. The implications of this result with respect to water-flooding, core analysis and electric logging are discussed. A better approach to determining the connate water saturation of oil-producing rocks, by measuring the fluid content of core samples at the surface, is by the use of crude oil or oil-base muds as the coring fluid. Although water flooding is of considerable importance in the recovery of ail, comparatively little is known with certainty about the role played by the connate water during the operations. Two possibilities exist. Either the connate water is retained in the formation while the flood water sweeps past, or it is pushed along to a greater or lesser degree by the flood. Thus far no explicit recognition in terms of quantitative studies appears to have been given to the displacement of connate waters by the intruding extraneous waters, although such a possibility might be important in determining the efficiency of the oil -displacement process in water-flooding operations, especially in argillaceous rocks. On the other hand, it is a common observation that the first water produced with the oil as a result of water-flooding is definitely saline.*.' Similar questions regarding the mobility of the interstitial water arise in the quantitative description of the advance of edge-water drives. In the interpretation of the water saturations determined from core analyses, when coring with water-base muds, it is generally assumed that the drilling fluid merely adds to the connate water without displacing the

One of the most significant technical and practical challenges facing the tunnel construction team on the Legacy Way road tunnel project in Brisbane, Australia was how to erect the prestressed precast concrete slabs to form the smoke duct in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels.An essential part of the tunnel ventilation system, the smoke duct extends the full length of the 4.6 km-long twin two-lane tunnels. The vast majority of the tunnels (approximately 4.3 km) were constructed using two 12.4 m diameter double-shield TBMs. The refurbished Herrenknecht machines broke several world records on the way to completing the tunnel excavation works in just over nine months. With the excavation complete the focus turned to solving the complex civil tunnel fit-out challenges. A key component of the civil fit-out of the tunnels was constructing the smoke duct in the TBM tunnels, which was designed as a precast solution.The slabs, which each measure 8.62 m long × 2.0 m wide × 200 mm thick and weigh close to 9?t, need to be erected above cast in situ corbels whilst other tunnel finishing works continue. The space-proofing clearance offered by the design to the support corbels below and the precast segmental lining above was in the order of only 100 mm.This paper tells the story of how the Transcity Joint Venture (JV) tunnel fit-out team comprising some of Europe and Australia’s leading tunnel construction specialists drew upon the global strengths of the existing JV member companies and the global reach of leading TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht to develop an innovative system in solving this challenging problem. Charles Catlett, Staunton, Virginia (communication to the Secretary*): I have had occasion to examine a few of the irondeposits in the immediate section of which Mr. Watson speaks, but have not had an opportunity to visit any of the well-known manganese-deposits. I find the former can be very safely read in light of the information which it is possible to get from the same measnres farther. north, where they are less completely decomposed. In the same way all of his conclusions in regard to the geology of the manganese-deposits bear out their occurrence in Virginia, when we allow for the far more complete decomposition in the section he has so carefully studied. Judging from the same measures farther north, I think he will be safe in agreeing even further with Penrose as to the origin of these ores. Some years ago I carried on prospecting work in these measures in Virginia, in which the iron-ore and manganese-ore were followed down to undecomposed material, and in which their occurrence along a definite line of stratification, and apparently a part of the original bedding, was plainly shown. This is unusual, however, even in the section of which I speak. At Crimora, Virginia, the decomposition is quite complete; at the same time the results of some hydraulic work, which has been done there, disclosed, at the time of my last visit, the manganese interbedded in the residual clay along a definite and distinct plane parallel to the bedding of the underlying quartzite, and which, as is shown at other points, corresponds with the plane of the original material. In view of the phosphorus reported by Mr. Watson as existing in the Cartersville ores, and the not uncommonly prohibitive amount in southern ores, I am interested to know whether

Calculations are presented for the prediction of the combined radiative-convective heat loss from molten steel held in a ladle, covered by initially molten slag. A mathematical formulation is given and numerical solutions are presented of the resultant partial differential equation. It is shown that a slag layer of about 2 to 3 in. thick would prevent any significant heat loss from the top metal surface for Periods of up to 1 hr. For thinner slag layers (or in the absence of the protective slag) appreciable heat losses would occur; plots given in the paper allow the quantitative evaluation of the fall in the metal temperature due to this heat loss. The ironmaking-steel processing operation involves several intermediate steps where the molten metal is held or transfered in ladles. The quantitative assessment of the heat losses occurring under these conditions is of considerable importance in process design considerations since the temperature of the metal may have to meet rigid specifications in any given part of the processing sequence. While the metal is held in a ladle, heat is lost by two mechanisms: i) by conduction into the ladle walls; ii) by radiation and convection from the top surface. Calculations relating to the conductive heat loss, are readily made and information may be found in the literature both on data pertaining to metallurgical situations and on the techniques that are available for performing additional computations.'-3 The evaluation of the combined convective-radiative heat loss is less straightforward, especially when there exists a protective slag layer covering the metal. In this latter case, as the top slag surface loses heat partial solidification may occur and the latent heat thus given up by the slag may represent an effective barrier to the heat loss from the metal. A semiquantitative assessment of the role played by the slag in preventing heat loss from the metal has been made in a previous paper,4 where it was shown that a slag layer 6 in. thick would act as a near-perfect insulator for periods of up to 2 hr. However, this first paper reported on an essentially preliminary investigation that considered only one slag layer thickness; furthermore, the boundary conditions used for the calculations were somewhat restrictive since no allowance was made for changes in the metal temperature. The purpose of this second paper is to extend the scope of the preliminary investigation previously reported by: i) considering several slag layer thicknesses; ii) allowing for variations in the metal temperature; and finally iii) by performing calculations on the net loss from the metal rather than from the slag surface. FORMULATION Consider a slag phase extending from y = 0 to y = L1, covering a metal phase that occupies the region extending from y = Ll to y = L, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Denote the slag and metal temperatures by TS and Tm and assume that initially both slag and metal are molten, having a uniform temperature Ti. At time = zero the surface represented by the y = 0 plane (top slag surface) is brought into contact with cold air, the temperature of which is given as T Thus for time > zero, heat will be transfered from the slag to the air by natural convection and thermal radiation; as a result of this heat loss the slag temperature will fall and after some time a solid phase is formed and a solidification boundary (more realistically described as a zone) will move progressively from y = 0 toward y = L1. Once the region of temperature gradients, moving ahead of the solidification zone, reach the slag-metal interface (y = L1) there will be a net transfer of heat from the metal through the slag to the cold air, across the y = 0 plane. In the formulation of moving boundary problems, involving phase changes that require computer solution, it is convenient to represent both phases by a single equation, making allowance for the latent heat of solidification by assigning an appropriate temperature dependence to the specific heat content. Activity-composition curves jor cobalt oxide and manganese oxide in solid solutions with spinel-type structure have been determined by studying the equilibrium between the spinel phase and a coexisting solid-solution phase in the tewzperature range 1100" to 1400"C. Within limits of experimental error, the system displays the behavior of a regular solution. The excess integral free energy of mixing is represented by the equation . The standard free energy of formation of cobalt manganite, CoMn,O,, from the oxide components COO mzd Mn2OS at 1200°C is calculated to be -8.6 kcal. AMONG the technologically and theoretically most important oxide phases are those which crystallize with the same structure type as the mineral MgO . A120,. Although the name spinel originally was used only for this mineral, the term is generally used today to designate the whole group of oxide phases with this same structure type. It is in this wider meaning that the term is being used in the present paper. The previous literature on spinels is very extensive. There are two aspects of spinels which have attracted particular attention: the structure, including the nature and distribution of the cations present, and the physical properties (electric, magnetic). The status of knowledge in these fields has been well-summarized in recent review articles.1'2 By contrast, thermodynamic properties of spinels are virtually unknown. Delineation of the activity-composition curve over the whole composition range of a solid-solution series with spinel-type structure is the objective of the present work. The system at elevated temperatures (>1000"C) constitutes such a series. The activity-composition curves for this system can be calculated from a study of the equilibrium between the above spinel solid solution and a solid solution (Co,Mn)O with sodium chloride-type structure. Data for the latter solid solution have become available recently.3 The system, in contact with metallic CO at 1200°C, obeys Raoult's law. The determination of the activity-composition curve for the spinel phase is based on the following relations. Classical nucleation theory states that in first order phase transformations, such as liquid to solid transition, nucleation of the product phase starts with the formation of small, unstable clusters (embryos). When the thermodynamic barrier to nucleation is overcome, the embryos grow and attain a critical size, beyond which they are stable, i.e. they become nuclei. If nucle- ation does not occur, the parent, liquid phase remains in metastable equilibrium. At temperature lowers, undercooling increase and atomic mobility decreases. The viscosity change in the undercooled liquid may result in the formation of glassy state. As demonstrated in previous papers [I-21, in solidification involving surface nucleation of the product phase, as the case is in rapid quenching by melt-spinning, both nucleation temperature and nucleation time depend upon the number of atoms available at the isothermal surface in contact with the substrate. As a result of the thinness of the melt-spun ribbons, the embryo clusters that form at the freezing temperature may not be supplied by the amount of atoms necessary for their growth to critical nuclei sizes. In such extreme conditions, the liquid does not crystallize, it forms a metallic glass. A numerical simulation method is proposed for the reactions involved in embryo cluster formation and growth, at the atomic level. The simulation enables the caIcuIation of either the nucleation or the glass transition temperatures. Calculations made for the well-known glass forming CuZr and FeB systems afford prediction of the geometrical and thermodynamically conditions necessary for the formation of either crystalline or amorphous ribbons in melt-spun ribbons.

In traversing lately the Sierra Madre, west of Sail Pedro and Guanacevi, I estimated the topographic summit at several points, by aneroid barometer, at about 8,500 ft. Mr. Weed's measurements, 40 miles further north, are from 9,000 to 9,500 ft., and indicate the correctness of the impression I obtained at the time, namely, that the greatest movement in the elevation of the Sierra was between Guanacevi and Guadaloupe y Calvo. This is suggested also by the course of the headwaters of the Rio Conchas and of the Nazas, and by the relative corrasion of the branches of the two streams. Mr. Weed's statements as to the unevenness and great relief of the andesite floor underlying the later dacites and rhyolites are very interesting, and lead me to add that the floor of the andesite breccias and flows is uncovered for several square miles east of Guanacevi. This floor is of reddish, bluish and gray shales, lying horizontal or dipping slightly east. Their age is unknown; but from the interbedded occurrence of copper sulphides, I took it to be Triassic,

This paper presents the results of theoretical investigations of the energy requirements of the hydraulic lifting of mined materials from the seabed to the sea surface in the deep-sea mining of solid minerals such as manganese nodules in the Clarion-Clipperton region of the Pacific, situated on the sea floor in water depths of 4,500 m or more. The principal element of the developed underwater transport system is the Underwater Chamber, which is connected by flexible pipeline to a mining machine that gathers nodules from the seabed, mixes them with seawater, and feeds them into a flexible pipeline. In this paper, we discuss the question of the optimum water depth for placement of the Chamber, the interior of which is designed to maintain a 1-atmosphere pressure. We present a method for calculating this depth as it relates to the mechanical characteristics of solid particles, the shapes and size distributions of the particles, particle and slurry density, and other properties. These investigations were carried out in hydro-transport laboratory of the Saint-Petersburg Mining Institute and the hydraulic laboratory of Faculty Environmental Engineering in Wroclaw Agricultural University. The district of Patricia, in the province of Ontario, lies northwest of the Albany River and extends northward to Hudson Bay. Formerly this was the unorganized district of Keewatin, the southern part of which was divided in 1912 between the provinces of Manitoba and Ontario. The interprovincial boundary now runs north from Lake of the Woods for 275 miles and thence northeast 375 miles to Hudson Bay. This district is comparable in size to all the older part of Ontario south of the Canadian Pacific Railway east of Lake Huron—thus it is roughly one-third of the whole of the present provincial area. The central part of this great triangle is one of the least accessible parts of Canada. From it streams flow southward to the English River, southeastward to the Albany, northward to Hudson Bay and the Hayes River, and westward to Lake Winnipeg. None of the streams is large and canoe travel is not easy. The only industry it has ever had is the trade in furs. Until the development of the airplane on a commercial basis, the only means of travel was by canoe or dog-train. There is not a mile of railway in the whole district. The two areas to be dealt with lie in the southwestern part of Patricia. Red Lake is 50 miles east of the Manitoba boundary and 75 miles north of the transcontinental railway from Cochrane to Winnipeg. Woman Lake is 50 miles farther east and slightly farther north. The late Dr. D. B. Dowling, of the Geological Survey of Canada, visited Red Lake and spent some time there during his exploration survey from Lac Seul to Berens River in 1893. He also visited the Woman Lake basin during the same journey, but his examination of it was much less detailed, the great area covered by him during the one field season making it impossible to make more than a hurried reconnaissance. Some prospecting in the Red Lake district followed Dowling's exploration, but the distance from railway was too great for any systematic work to be done. In 1922, following the usual plan, the Ontario Department of Mines made a geological reconnaissance of the English River, following :in instrumental survey of that river and its lakes by the Department of Lands. This paper describes mining operations at the Iron King mine of the Shattuck -Denn Mining Corp. in Yavapai County , Ariz . It is one of a series being prepared by the Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines on mining practices and methods in various mining districts of the United States . The mine and surface plant of the Iron King mine are situated in secs . 15 and 21 , T. 13 N. , R. 1 E. , about 20 miles by State highway 69 east by southeast from the city of Prescott and 1 mile southwest of the mining town of Humboldt on the Prescott -Mayer branch of the Atchison , Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad (fig . 1 ) . A l-mile truck haul brings the mill concentrates (lead and zinc ) to bins on a siding of this line at Humboldt ; the silver -gold bullion is handled separately . Some of the oldest residents in the vicinity of Prescott claim that the original location for the Iron King mine was made in 1880. The earliest recorded production was in 1906-1907 . During the first World War the mine produced fluxing ore for the Humboldt smelter . In 1936 the property was purchased under tax sale , and a mill (140-ton capacity ) was erected in 1938. The capacity of this mill was increased to 225 tons the following year , and a cyanide plant was added in 1940 to treat mill tailings . In 1942 the Shattuck -Denn Mining Corp. purchased the property . A new working shaft was sunk , mine development was speeded , and mill capacity was again increased . The predominating locally formation of this district is a pre -Cambrian schist known as Yavapai schist . The Iron King deposit , which carries gold, silver , lead , zinc , and copper , occurs as a series of lenses in a sheared zone of the pre -Cambrian schist . Down to the 600 -foot level the ore was mined and drawn by the shrinkage method . The cut -and -fill method was adopted for the lower levels . Waste rock for stope fill was provided by block-caving an area on the 600 level . Main haulage drifts were driven in the firm footwall , and crosscuts were driven across the mineralized zone at 100 -foot intervals . Grab samples taken from each car of every working place and channel samples cut every 5 feet in development work are considered sufficient for estimating ore reserves .

Rotary kilns are adaptable to many fuels, but this paper deals principally with the use of powdered coal. The observations and conclusions presented are based on rotary kilns used in the manufacture of basic refractories for steel furnaces. Solid fuels are pulverized for two principal reasons: (I) ease of control, and (2) rapidity of combustion. By the use of pulverized coal, the operator can increase or decrease the fuel supply by small increments and with very little time lag between the change of control and the resultant change in the flame. This is extremely important in this type of furnace, as the temperature range for maturing the clinker is very narrow. By fine grinding, it is possible to increase the rate of burning of the coal, thereby liberating great quantities of heat within a small space in a short time. Under given conditions, temperature is a measure of the heat liberated per unit of time. To attain the temperatures of 2950° to 3150ºF., which are encountered in the manufacture of various steel-furnace refractories, it is estimated that it is necessary to liberate 125,000 to 175,000 B.t.u. per cubic foot of the burning zone per hour. The manufacture of dolomitic refractories is a ceramic process and, as is true in most such processes, the material must be subjected to a certain critical temperature for a certain length of time in order to complete the reaction. If the time of reaction is reduced, the temperature must be increased; in other words, if the rate at which the material flows through the hot zone of the kiln is increased, the temperature of the hot zone must be increased to compensate for this shorter exposure to the flame. Firing with Pulverized Coal Fig. I is a line drawing of a rotary kiln with the attendant equipment indicated in their relative positions. The kiln proper consists of a sloping, refractory-lined steel tube rotating slowly about its longitudinal axis (0.75 r.p.m.), and is countercurrent in operation in that the raw feed is introduced at the stack end and gradually approaches the zone of highest temperature at the lower end, where the fuel is introduced. Before 1930, the usual method of firing a rotary kiln was to store the coal in the pulverized form and then feed from this storage to the kiln as needed. This proved unsatisfactory and dangerous because of dust explosions and the inability to obtain an even feed to the kiln caused by arching of the coal in storage and flooding of the coal feeders. In later years the practice has been to store the raw coal and grind it as it is needed. Such a layout is indicated in Fig. I. The coal is stored in bins, charged from the top and drawn from the bottom into recording scales and then into some type of unit pulverizer. There are a number of good pulverizers .on the market, each incorporating features that the manufacturer considers outstanding.
