IT would be of great importance to our understanding of the phenomena of fracture in metals if a unique relationship could be established between stress and some easily measurable parameter of deformation up to the fracture. It is known that no such relationshir, has been found when the parameter was the mechanically measured strain,' the major part of which is plastic. To this end, annealed stress free*' specimens of 61s aluminum alloy were ** Freedom of stress in this particular case means absence of those stresses which can be checked by the technique employed. tested at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature (—195OC), by first maintaining the same temperature from the beginning until the end of the test, and then with crossovers from one temperature to the other. Three major factors had to be taken into consideration in designing the specimens and testing equipment. The test setup must allow X-ray pictures to be taken while the specimen is under load (for as much as 2 hr at a given load). Provision must be made for maintaining the test specimen at the temperature of liquid nitrogen as well as at room temperature. In addition, the specimen must be able to rotate to allow the X,ray beam to take in as large a sample of grains as possible, to maintain centering, and to correct for effects of large grains. The final design of the specimen and equipment is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The specimen and grips are hollow, enabling liquid nitrogen to be poured in through a funnel-container arrangement while the specimen is rotating. The diameter of the specimens at the 2 in. gage section is 5/16 in. with a 3/16 in. diameter hole through the center. A small pilot valve in the lower grip allows a very small stream of liquid nitrogen to escape, thus assuring circulation of the liquid at all times. A low temperature silicone grease-tissue paper packing is used to seal all joints. The specimen is held in the grips by a pin. Spherical socket joints at top and bottom are used to allow for proper alignment. The grips are connected to the thrust bearings by means of plastic couplings to decrease the heat flow. Rotation is accomplished by means of a motor which drives a plastic gear (integral with the lower coupling) through a semiuniversal joint to allow for deforma- tion of the specimen. The torque applied to the specimen is very small. The maximum stress caused by this torque at the highest loads reached was found to be less than 200 psi, The whole unit was mounted in a 10,000 Ib testing machine. An insulation cage was placed around the specimen to cut down air circulation, and consequent frosting of the specimen, and also to reduce radiation and convection heat losses. A narrow window, covered on both sides with a thin plastic materiai allows the X-ray beam to reach the specimen. INTRODUCTION The degree of success of an association between parties in establishing a new venture ultimately depends on three factors: a. the venture's underlying economic strength, which is based on the complementarity of the comparative advantages brought by each party to the negotiating table; b. the ability to reach an agreement which satisfies each party's objectives and constraints; and, c. the capacity to design and implement a funding structure which is consistent with the project economics. A thorough assessment of the venture's profitability and associated risks under alternative technical and economic scenarios is the basis for a sound "go" or "no go" decision. In-depth evaluation of the risks and rewards to each of the parties involved under alternative legal and financial structure must be the foundation for a long lasting "how to go" decision. The allocation of risks and rewards should be consistent with the objectives and constraints of all parties and the sharing mechanisms, established in the contract, should be flexible to assure the long-term stability of the agreement. Rapidly changing economic conditions during the last decade have had a dramatic impact on the envisaged allocation of risks and rewards between host countries and private investors. The effects of these changes, and the fact that the relative strengths of the parties involved may shift during the life of a project (e.g. before and after major capital investments have been made), have forced the renegotiation of a multitude of contracts. Therefore, the present and future stability of an economic agreement would depend not only on the originally designed provisions, but also on provisions which allow for the automatic adjustment of rewards to project sponsors under a variety of future economic situations. A pre-condition for the allocation and quantification of risks and rewards is the definition of standards of measurement used by each of the parties. This is critical in international negotiations when one of the parties represents the national interests of a country. The understanding and use of different standards for the measurement of rewards for risk taken between a government and private enterprise facilitate the negotiation of a satisfactory agreement. This is possible because certain trade-offs between the negotiating parties may have different relative values. STANDARDS OF MEASUREMENT OF REWARDS FOR RISK TAKEN The negotiating process takes a step forward when the parties are able to focus on their interests, explore different alternative solutions and then base results on a set of objective standards. Unfortunately, the parties frequently put more effort into "staking out" and defending positions, than into understanding their intrinsic interests. Moreover, when one party, such as a governemnt owned corporation, represents a country's national interests, the negotiation process increases in complexity. Private firms focus on commercial profitability, using discounted cash flow techniques such as NPV, IRR, or ROE. In contrast, the government is also concerned with the project's impact on the local socio-economic environment. Without entering into a discussion of alternative economic development theories and approaches, there exist several possible measures that could be pragmatically utilized by each party in evaluating the socio-economic impact of a project. The more complete measure is the National Profitability (NP). The NP is a discounted cash flow procedure similar in structure to IRR or NPV but in which the project's financial cash inflows and outflows and discount rates are adjusted to take into consideration the local conditions. The NP is calculated on an unlevered basis and all taxes and duties are removed from the project

Oil and gas activities in Indiana during 1943 continued to decline at about the same rate as in 1942. New development, production, and prospecting, all showed the results of Federal regulation, low price for crude oil and shortages of labor and materials. Several local stripper-well operations were shut down, but no large-scale abandonment has occurred as yet. During the year, 277 holes were drilled for oil and/or gas, of which 99 were completed as oil wells, 19 as gas wells and 159 as dry holes. This record was a decline of 21 per cent over last year in the total number of completed tests, 20 per cent in the number of oil wells and 9.5 per cent in the number of gas wells. As in the previous year, most of the drilling (82 per cent) was in the southwestern part of the state, Gibson County ranking first, with 77 completions and 49 oil wells. Posey County was second, with 59 completions and 20 oil wells. The remaining 18 per cent of the drilling was in the old Trenton oil and gas area. The total footage drilled during the year was 482,799 ft., a decline of 18 per cent from the previous year. Of this, 146,559 ft. was wildcat footage. The total initial production of the oil wells completed was 6362 bbl. and of the gas wells was 2,562,000 cu. feet. Three tests in the old Trenton area were drilled into the Cambrian and reported nothing more than tar residue. A Devonian test was to be made in the Griffin field in the Wabash River but owing to the delay caused by Federal restrictions this test did not get started in 1943. It is expected to spud in March 1944. The new discoveries in 1943 were virtually all in the southwestern part of the state, and all, so far, one-well pools, except the North Owensville pool, in Gibson County. The latter was brought in during the month of February and by the end of the year nine wells were producing in the pool, with a reported initial yield of 1260 bbl. per day. By the end of the year it had a daily average production of 401 bbl. and an accumulated production of 39,129 bbl. The average gravity of the oil is reported to be 35.6. On the Ohio-Indiana state line, early in 1943, a new pool was opened up in the old Trenton area. The discovery well was on the Ohio side of the line. An offset well was completed on the Indiana side, with an initial yield of 64 bbl., and settled down to 5 bbl. per day. This well produced 1154 bbl. up to Dec. 31, 1943. There was no further development here, because of the Federal Conservation Order M-68, restricting drilling to one well on 40 acres. The development pattern usually followed in this area is one well to 5 acres. The E. Rogers field was extended by one pool (Table 4). Most of the development in the oil-field pools during the year took place in the Kirksville pool, in Gibson County, and the Caborn pool, in Posey County. The crude-oil production in 1943 was approximately 5,273,000 bbl., a decline of 29 per cent from the previous year. The Griffin field, of Gibson and Posey Counties,

TWO overfeed drum-type separators using a suspension of magnetite in water as the separating medium have been installed in the Champion No. 1 preparation plant of the Pittsburgh Coal Co., Division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Company. A simplified flow diagram of the Champion No. 1 coarse coal circuit is shown in Fig. 1. A railroad car rotary dump, capable of handling 20 cars per hr, discharges the coal into a hopper. Coal is fed from the hopper of the rotary dump to a 60-in. belt conveyor by two reciprocating pan-type feeders. The belt conveyor feeds the run of mine coal onto the main raw coal screen. The first deck is fitted with 3 in. round hole perforated plate which removes the 3x0-in. coal. The second deck of the screen is equipped with 6-in. lip screens which separate the remaining coal into +6 in. and 6x3 in. The +6 in. coal is transferred to a shaking picking table and then discharged onto the loading boom. The 6x3-in. coal is fed to the No. 2 dense medium vessel for cleaning. The clean coal from this unit flows to a vibrating screen where the medium is removed and the coal sized into 6x4 in. and 4x3 in. The 6x4-in. coal is transferred to the loading booms and the 4x3-in. is conveyed to the clean coal classifying screens to remove degradation. The 3x0-in. raw coal is blended in a system composed of three storage bins having a total capacity of 400 tons. From these bins the coal is fed onto a 48-in. flight conveyor by three reciprocating feeders. This flight conveyor delivers the coal to the Rheo plant. The 3x0-in. coal is then cleaned in two 48-in. Rheolaveur launders each equipped with two Rheo boxes. The first set of boxes removes a primary refuse and the second set produces a middling product which is recirculated in the launders. The cleaned coal and water overflows from the primary launders to two sizing and dewatering shaker screens where the water and - 3/8-in. coal are removed for further cleaning in the Rheo fine coal plant. The 3x3/8-in. clean coal is combined with the 4x3-in. coal from the No. 2 vessel, sized into 4x2 in., 2x1 1/4 in., and 11/4x3/8 in., then sent to the loading booms. The 3x0-in. refuse from the primary launders is normally fed to the No. 1 dense medium circuit, but any portion or all of this material can, as an alternate, be processed in the Rheo rewash launder. The primary refuse when fed to the dense medium circuit is screened into 3/8x0 which is cleaned in the fine coal plant and 3x3/8 for cleaning in the No. 1 vessel. The clean coal from this vessel is passed over a vibrating drainage and rinse screen, then sluiced to the rewash sizing shaker where it is dewatered and sized for loading. Essentially all of the barite produced in Georgia has come from the Carters-ville district in the northwest part of the state. The earliest recorded shipment of ore, 60 tons, was made in 1894.' With the exception of the four-year period 1931 to 1934, the separate yearly output has been recorded and published since 1915, whereas the total yearly output of the United States has been published since 1880. The separately recorded production of Georgia (Cartersville) through 1947 is 2,232,544 short tons valued at $14,900,746,2 but unpublished data on the period 1931 to 1934, plus the estimated unrecorded output prior to 1915, make the actual total about 2,400,000 short tons. This is about 21 pct of the total production of the United States, which, through 1947, is 11,328,440 short tons valued at $71,683,386.2 The barite-producing part of the Cartersville district is relatively small, having from north to south a length of 4.5 miles, and a width of 2 miles. This small area, containing 35 barite mines, is the source of practically all of the barite produced in the state. The area is hilly, and has a total relief of 500 ft. The west-flowing Etowah River crosses the middle of the area, and is an unfailing source of water for operations on properties near its course. Opencut mining is carried on during the entire year, but is hampered by rain in the winter and early spring. Three railroads, two U.S. highways, and a network of graded roads provide access to and within the district, as well as excellent shipping facilities for ore and supplies. In addition to the barite, the district contains deposits of manganese, brown iron, ocher, umber, and specular hematite. Geologic Setting The area containing the barite deposits is underlain by Lower Cambrian rocks and their weathered residua. These rocks are grouped in three formations; in ascending order, these are the Weisner, the Shady, and the Rome. The Weisner formation consists mainly of finely micaceous metashale containing many random beds of quartzite, a few beds of conglomerate and metasiltstone, and beds of crystalline limestone that is apparently scarce. The formation is more than 1000 ft thick, and the base is not exposed. On account of their resistance to weathering, the rocks of the Weisner formation have sustained the higher elevations and therefore crop out on the ridges that characterize the area. Nearly all of these ridges are underlain by asymmetric anticlinal folds, and conversely the intervening valleys are underlain by synclinal folds. A diagrammatic section, showing typical mode of exposure of the Weisner rocks and their relation to overlying formations, in the limb of a fold, is shown in Fig 1. The Shady formation here consists of a lithologically distinctive series of variably siliceous specular hematite beds and thin beds of dolomite, which in places contain abundant fossils. In the zone of weathering, the dolomite has been leached and most of the hematite hydrated to ocherous and umber-ous clays, hut bedding planes in these weathered materials are commonly well preserved with or without distortion effected by slumping. This preservation of structure during weathering is lacking in the residuum that rests on the Rome dolomite, which is described below. The maximum thickness of the

A gravel pack completion is described which, in addition to sand screening, permits the exclusion of water and gas from the oil production. A gravel pack composed of alternate layers of different particle sizes is employed which has horizontal but not overall vertical permeability to drilling mud. A packer is run on the tubing and set in the screen member, around which the gravel layers are placed. The hydrostatic pressure of a mud column prevents the entry of fluid above (or below) the level of the packer. The producing level may be changed by raising or lowering the tubing. Vertical coning is controlled by replacing the mud column with oil and continually injecting oil into the sand section above (or below) the packer. Three well histories with this completion are described in detail. Statistics on the first 100 completions of this general type are given. INTRODUCTION Gravel pack type completions have heretofore been almost exclusively for the purpose of preventing sand production. This paper describes and presents well data on a gravel pack procedure which is primarily a selective completion method. Although complete sand screening is achieved, the exclusion of gas and water is the primary objective. The application of this procedure is therefore not limited to unconsolidated sands. Application to hard sand or limestone reservoirs is equally feasible. GRAVEL PACK PROCEDURE Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate the gravel pack procedure employed. The gravel is placed by means of the frangible disc type dump bailer shown by Fig. 1.' This bailer has its lower end closed by a plate glass or steel rimmed cement disc. This disc breaks when the bailer passes over the liner allowing the gravel to be deposited around the liner. The liner employed is usually 2 3/8 in. to 2 7/8 in. OD and 1.995 in. or 2.07 in. ID (ID of 2-in. tubing or 2-in. line pipe). Two tvDes,. of slotted sections have been employed. One type employs horizontal hacksaw cut or milled slots of about 1/32 in. width opposite the producing section. The other type employs the same type,. of horizontal slot. but slots are placed in groups of six at intervals of about 8 in. A cage composed of half round vertical bars, spaced apart, is then welded to the pipe over the slotted sections. This liner has the bottom end closed, usually by bull plugging. The upper end is closed, while placing the gravel, by a cap which is held in place by means of a shear pin. This cap has a mandrel attached to it which extends downward inside of the liner to within a few inches of its lower end. The top of the liner cap is formed to fit a releasing type wire line core barrel overshot. The liner is lowered to bottom on the wire line by means of this overshot and released. The length of the liner is usually suffi- cient to extend to about 20 ft above the highest level to which gravel is to be placed, the upper end of the liner always being in the casing. The dimensions of the liner and bailer are such with respect to the casing size that the bailer will always pass over the liner. After releasing the liner the bailer is run to bottom. L-D gold mine is 3 miles south of Wenatchee, central Washington. Recognition of locally mappable conglomerates, sandstones, and shales within the Paleocene (?) Swauk formation led to the discovery that the known epithermal gold mineraliza¬tion is limited to a previously unknown imbricate thrust zone of unknown displace¬ment cutting the open folds o f the area. Hypabyssal intrusions also are most nu¬merous along the trace of the thrust faults. Yakima basalt of Miocene age uncon¬formably overlies the Swauk formation, thrust faults, and the intrusions. The L-D mine is in a northwesterly trending imbricate fault block of nearly vertical strata. Microscopic native gold, electrum, and naumannite occur in quartz veins and as low¬grade disseminations in the well-silicified portions of arkosic sandstones. Fault gouge on the "footwall fissure" limits ore to the hanging-wall block of the fault. Epithermal mineralization and alteration are spatially related to the nearby intrusions. Right lateral north-south faults offset the ore a maximum of 300-400 ft along any one fault. From 1949 until January 1967, when the L-D mine closed, 1,036,572 dry tons of ore valued at $14,962,305 and averaging 0.396 oz Au per ton and 0.607 oz Ag per ton were mined. Recognition of the structural control of the mineralization and altera¬tion within the Swauk formation suggests several areas within and outside of the mine that warrant further exploration. For example, the high-angle faults, imbricate thrusts, and the intrusions of this area are on strike with similar features along the major Entiat fault zone 10 miles to the northwest. The L-D gold mine (previously called Squilchuck, Wenatchee, Golden King, Gold King, and Lovitt) is located in Squilchuck Canyon about three miles south of Wenatchee, Chelan County, Wash. (Fig. 1) on the eastern edge of the Cascade Mountains. The major stratigraphic unit in the area is the nonmarine early Tertiary Swauk formation, which is predominantly com¬posed of arkosic sandstone. The lack of laterally per¬sistent units and the paucity of outcrops heretofore have precluded all but the grossest subdivision of the Swauk.' As a result, the true significance of the open folds in the Wenatchee area was not recognized, and although the geology within the mine was known, the structural setting of the mine was virtually unknown. During the present investigation, several locally map¬pable units were discovered within the Swauk which, in conjunction with mine maps, indicate an imbricate thrust zone. The epithermal gold mineralization, most of the hypabyssal intrusions, and the zones of hydrother¬mal alteration are located within or near this thrust zone. The purpose of this paper is to: (1) to describe this structural setting, rather than the detailed mine geology already presented by Lovitt and Skerl,2 and (2) to sug¬gest that from an exploration standpoint, this struc¬tural setting may be repeated in areas inside and outside of the mine area. Stratigraphy and Structure of the Swauk Formation General: The Swauk formation contains three distinct lithologies. Typical Swauk sandstone is gray on fresh surfaces, poorly sorted, weathers tan, and is cross¬bedded; it consists of 40-60% quartz, 20-40% feldspar, and up to 10% muscovite and biotite 9 The typical shale is gray to dark brown, very soft, and interbedded with silty sandstones; sharp contacts exist between the

The internal surfaces of rocks which are in contact with interstitial fluids are known to influence in some degree the recovery of hydrocarbons from pay zones. Despite the admitted importance of the influence of solid surfaces on hydrocarbon recovery, little information is available concerning the extent of surface of reservoir rocks. In this paper a description is given of the apparatus and procedure employed in the determination of the surface areas of sedimentary rocks, and values are reported for a variety of sandstone and limestone cores. In addition, consideration is given to the Kozeny equation, which relates surface area to porosity and permeability. A colliparison is made between the surface areas as calculated from this equation and the geometrical areas of a series of packs of spherical glass beads. Also, for a group of sandstone cores. Kozeny areas are compared with surface areas as determined by the gas adsorption method employed in this investigation. INTRODUCTION It has long been recognized that many processes which are of importance to hydrocarbon production are controlled in some degree by the extent of the surface of the reservoir rock through which the hydrocarbons move. For example, the recovery efficiency that is obtained in a given reservoir is certainly determined in part by the action of interfacial forces between the reservoir fluids and rock, and this action is influenced in turn by the extent of solid surface. Despite the admitted importance of surface effects to problems of petroleum recovery, little information is available concerning the extent of surface of reservoir rocks." It is the purpose of this paper to describe an apparatus which has been employed for the measurement of the surface areas of rock samples and to present the values which have been obtained for a variety of sandstone and limestone cores. In addition, the relationship of surface area to permeability and porosity, as given by the Kozeny equation, will be discussed. METHOD OF MEASURING SURFACE AREA The method of determining surface areas as employed in this work has previously found wide use in studies of porous solids such as catalysts. The method involves the measurement of the amount of physical adsorption of an inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon, on the bare surface of the solid at reduced pressure and constant temperature near the normal liquefaction temperature of the gas. With the aid of the theory of isothermal adsorption as developed by Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller,' it is possible to ascertain the amount of gas (and hence the number of molecules) which is required to cover the solid surface with a single layer of molecules. From a knowledge of the covering area per molecule the total surface ares of the solid can be computed. Since the Brunauer. Emmett, Teller (BET) theory has been adequately discussed elsewhere: it will suffice here merely to present their final equation as ordinarily employed for surface-area calculations. This equation relates the volume of gas, V, which is adsorbed at pressure, P, to the liquefaction pressure, Po, of the gas, and to the volume of gas, V.,, that is required to form a monomolecular layer: In this equation C is a quantity which is related to the heats of adsorption and liquefaction of the gas; for a particular solid-gas system at Constant temperature, C is considered to have a constant value. A flowMeter has been developed at Gulf Research and Development Co. and tested in the field for measuring the flow of gas in well bores. It has been used in a study of the injection capacity of different horizons in gas injection wells in Oklahoma. The flow sensitive element of the meter is a semi-conductor having a very high temperature coefficient of resistance. Advantages possessed by this meter are the result of that property and the high specific resistance of the element. The instrument possesses a sensitivity considerably higher than any reported previously. In the application described here the element is heated to a temperature considerably above ambient by an electric current, which is supplied by a voltage source at the surface. When fluid flows through the meter the rate of dissipation of heat is increased and the temperature of the element decreases. Because of the negative temperature characteristics of the resistance element such a decrease of temperature will be accompanied by an increase of resistance which, under flow conditions ordinarily found in wells, is of such a magnitude that it can be directly measured or recorded in terms of a change in voltage at the surface. In practice, rate of flow is measured in terms of the drop in voltage in the resistance element. All the metering and control apparatus remains at the surface while the thermal element is lowered into the well on a single conductor cable, consisting of an insulated wire and sheath. A flowMeter has been developed at Gulf Research and Development Co. and tested in the field for measuring the flow of gas in well bores. It has been used in a study of the injection capacity of different horizons in gas injection wells in Oklahoma. The flow sensitive element of the meter is a semi-conductor having a very high temperature coefficient of resistance. Advantages possessed by this meter are the result of that property and the high specific resistance of the element. The instrument possesses a sensitivity considerably higher than any reported previously. In the application described here the element is heated to a temperature considerably above ambient by an electric current, which is supplied by a voltage source at the surface. When fluid flows through the meter the rate of dissipation of heat is increased and the temperature of the element decreases. Because of the negative temperature characteristics of the resistance element such a decrease of temperature will be accompanied by an increase of resistance which, under flow conditions ordinarily found in wells, is of such a magnitude that it can be directly measured or recorded in terms of a change in voltage at the surface. In practice, rate of flow is measured in terms of the drop in voltage in the resistance element. All the metering and control apparatus remains at the surface while the thermal element is lowered into the well on a single conductor cable, consisting of an insulated wire and sheath. A number of the wells tested were plugged back and the results are reported in detail. While not all the work-overs were successful, evidence, including the results of reruns by this survey method, points to failure of the plugback operations. The data provided in the tests discussed show, contrary to general opinion, that a large percentage approaching 50 pct of the wells showed intermediate water instead of bottom water. Furthermore, approximately a third of the wells tested showed multiple zones of water production. The equipment comprises a long pipelike assembly carrying 10 pairs of electrodes spaced apart a distance of 4 ft. A surface-controlled solenoid-operated switch is provided to connect each of the individual pairs of electrodes in turn to a single-conductor steel-armored cable by means of which the conductivity of the fluid in the vicinity of each of the electrode pairs can be continuously recorded at the surface. Any number of electrode pairs and any spacing can be used. This assembly is lowered on tubing and placed in position opposite the section of the well to be studied. A conventional rod pump is used to produce the well for the survey. The pump inlet is placed below the lowest electrode pair. The well is conditioned by pumping Out the salt water normally standing in the well and introducing fresh water into the annulus at the surface. When the resistivity of the water standing in the well has been increased to a sufficiently high value, the inflowing fresh water is stopped and the drawdown operation of the survey is started. As the fluid head is lowered by pumping, fluids flow into the well and the entry Of salt water is indicated by the change in resistivity of the fresh water opposite the 'Ones Of water entry, The process can be repeated as Often as necessary with little effort and without moving any well equipment to be sure that the fluids produced from each zone are representative Of the true reservoir content. The velocity of mig-ration of these solutes in thorium metal due to a high amperage dc current was measured at several temperatures. All three solutes migrated in the same direction as the electron flow. Diffusion coefficients were combined with the migration velocities to predict the steady-state concentration profile. Electrotransport was shown to be an effective method of removing carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen from thorium and resistance ratios several times larger than for crystal bar thorium were achieved. However, the maxirnum attained purification was well below the predicted values, apparently due to some form of contamination. THE migration of solutes in metals when a high current density dc current is passed has been known for many years. This phenomenon has been the subject of a number of reviews published in recent years.l~* Many of the earlier investigators of electromigration of interstitial solutes interpreted the direction and velocity of migration on the basis of a charge on the solute particle. This interpretation is unclear because, in a given experiment, one cannot separate the contributions to the force moving the solute which arise from the charge on the solute in an electric field gradient and the momentum transfer from the scattering of the electrons or holes. There have been only a few quantitative measurements of interstitial migration velocities and some of these have been characterized by poor accuracy or by errors in the analysis of the experiment. The electrotransport mobilities of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in thorium were determined by observing the rate of movement of a discontinuity in the concentration profile. This method was used by Carlson el a~.~ to determine the mobilities of interstitial solutes in yttrium and its advantages are discussed in that paper. The specimen is essentially a pair of semi-infinite, bar-type diffusion couples. The electro-transport velocity was measured by observing the displacement of the mean concentration point in a measured length of time. The diffusion coefficients were calculated by the Grube method from the concentration profile. The transport mobilities and diffusion coefficients can be used to predict the concentration profile in an electrotransport experiment of a given time, current density, and specimen length. At long times a steady state will be reached such that the natural logarithm of the concentration of each solute varies linearly along the bar with a slope which is equal to the velocity of the migrating solute divided by its diffusion coefficient. The estimation of the purification potential of electrotransport is discussed by ~erhoeven.' A comparison of the concentration profile and the purification which should be expected from known solute velocities and diffusion coefficients with that which is obtained in an experiment can be very useful in indicating whether the maximum possible purification has been achieved. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The apparatus used in this study consisted of a sample chamber which was equipped with two electrodes, a sight glass, and a flange for mounting to a high-vacuum system capable of obtaining pressure of 2 x lo-? Torr. The chamber was made of stainless steel and was 4 in. in diam and 6 in. long. The seal between the electrodes and the chamber was made with "0" rings and compression bushings. The thorium specimens were threaded and screwed into tantalum "U"-shaped adapters attached to the ends of the electrodes. This arrangement is shown in Fig. 1

The flow of fluids in stratified porous systems, in which adjacent layers of the system are in communication over part or all of their common interface, in many instances involves crossflow between layers. A theoretical study has been made of the unsteady-state flow of slightly compressible fluids during depletion of bounded stratified porous systems. Consideration has been restricted to single-phase flow, with negligible capillary and gravity effects. Analytical expressions have been derived for pressure distribution and for (luxes at the producing face in two-layer systems with complete fluid communication between layers. These expressions occur in the form of double Fourier and Fourier-Bessel series. The method of extending the solution to any number of layers is demonstrated by deriving the equation for pressure distribution in a three-layer system. On the basis of the exact results for two-layer systems, certain generalizations regarding the behavior of stratified systems in general are presented. The performance of stratified systems, in terms of cumulative flux as a function of time, is shown to lie at all times between bounds established from single-layer theory. The upper bound is given by treating the system as a single layer with arithmetic average physical properties. The corresponding lower bound is the summation of the fluxes from each layer as treated individually. Variation in performance of stratified systems between the upper and lower bounds is determined by the extent to which crossflow occurs in the system. The principal parameters affecting the amount of crossflow are the vertical permeability of the system, the ratio of system thickness to "radius of drainage" and, for radial systems, the ratio of system thickness to interior radius. At very early times, the system performance is near the lower bound. As time and the radius of drainage increase, the per- formance tends toward the upper bound. INTRODUCTION One of the principal problems confronting the reservoir engineer today is the incorporation of the effect of reservoir heterogeneity into predictions of reservoir performance. The first part of this problem is the characterization of the actual reservoir heterogeneity in a mathematically useful manner.1, 2 It is then necessary to calculate the effect of this heterogeneity on the system performance. It is frequently possible to estimate this effect by comparison with the known behavior of an idealized system. One such idealized system is the stratified or "layer-cake" model. Many studies have been made of the behavior of stratified systems, from both a theoretical and experimental standpoint. The great majority of the theoretical studies have been concerned with systems of separated layers, with no fluid crossflow. Among the more noteworthy of such theoretical papers is that recently published by Lefkovits, et al,3 in which a comprehensive analysis was presented for the behavior of bounded stratified systems which are unconnected except at the wellbore. Three recent references have dealt with stratified systems including the effect of crossflow. Jacquard4 has presented mathematical derivations pertaining to depletion of two layer systems producing at constant rate. A doctoral dissertation by Katz5 contains analytical solutions and tables of results for pressure distribution and fluid flux during constant-terminal-pressure depletion of two-layer and three-layer systems with crossflow, together with tables of eigenvalues necessary in the computations. The dissertation also presents results from experimental studies of stratified systems using a heat-transfer analog model. This paper is largely based on the material in this dissertation. The rise of a new laboratory model for studying tran-sient fluid flow problems, is described. The theory of he model is based on the analogy between the equa-ions which describe the flow of compressible fluids in porous media and the conduction of heal m solids. The "thermal model" is used to study the Iransient Pressure distributions during fluid displacement in five Standard well patterns. The studies indicate quantita-ively how die pressures change with lane at any poit in the reservoir. It was found that, in general, the equipressure contours are more radial about the wells early in the program than after steady-state conditions are established. In addition two studies of fractured five-spot patterns are presented to illustrate the opplicability of the model for a wide range of reservoir conditions. INTRODUCTION In reviewing the oil recovery techniques involving fluid displacement it was found that a very considerable quantity, if not all of the fluid within the pattern, mav be displaced (during a time-dependent or transient period rather than the usually applied steady-state conditions. Since the oil is displaced during a transient period, it was believed desirable to study the nature of the transients for several of the commonly used fluid displacement patterns. A literature review indicated fairly complete studies of the streamlines and isopotentials for steady-state: yet few data were available on the transient displacement process. Several simulated steady-state multiwell displacement programs were carefully mapped by Foster and Lodge on an electrical conducting sheet as early as 1875, hut the more recent work of Muskat provides the best source for steady-state phenomena having direct petroleum production applications. In order to study the transient phenomena a new lab-oratory model was developed which is based on the similarity of the equations that describe the flow of fluids and the conduction of heal. The equations describing heat flow were developed early in the nineteenth century. Regorous solutions tor most transient problems are in gcneral complex and usually limited to fairly restricted houndary conditions.2 the thermal model may be used to obtain approximate solutions for many transient problems without some of the restrictions required for analytical solution. The application of the analogy between heat conduc-. tion in solids. electrical flow and fluid flow, in a porous media has long been recognised. Techniques originally developed for the solution of heat conduction prol?lems have in many instances proved useful in ohtaining solutions to fluid flow prohlcms. Ir is not surpri5ing then that a heat conduction or thermal model might bf usefull in sludying transient fluid flow. As an example ol the problems suitable for the study with the thermal model, transient pressure distributions during fluid displacement programs are studied for the five-spot, line-drive, staggered line-diibe. seven-spot 211 two fractured patterns. A model was constructed of an iron plate of geometry similar to the reservoir patterns under study. The principle of mirror images as suggested by Bryan was employed in shaping the model. A temperature differential was obtained by soldering two sections of copper tubing to the plate at points analogous to the well location in the field. Hot and cold water was passed through the tubing. The temperature distribution, analogous to the pressure distribution in the field. was obtained a a function of time from thermocouplcs distributed over the plate.

The kinetics of crack propagation in a hydrogenated high-strength steel at subzero temperatures indicated that cracking progressed in a discontinuous fashion. The delayed failure process thus involves a series of crack initiations rather than the continuous growth of a single crack. The incubation time required for the initiation of delayed failure was controlled by the diffusion of hydrogen. The activation energy for the process was 9120 cal per g-alom. As the test temperature was lowered the incubation time constituted a greater percentage of the total tinze to fracture, and al -50°F the incubation and fracture times were essentially coincident resulting in instantaneous, catastroplzic fracture. A unique feature of hydrogen embrittlement is the delayed failure process in which the material fails under the action of a sustained load even though it is capable of supporting a higher load for a finite period of time.')' Delayed failure of steel and titanium is characterized by an incubation time, preceding the initiation of a crack in a highly localized region, and the subsequent growth of the crack to ultimate failure.3-5 The kinetics of crack growth in hydro-genated high-strength steels have been studied through the use of resistance measurements and have an important bearing on the mechanism of delayed failure. Delayed failure is believed to be merely a facet of hydrogen embrittlement in which sufficient time is allowed during a test for hydrogen diffusion. The current theories employed to explain hydrogen em-brittlement can be grouped into two types. one6-8 explains the embrittlement on the basis of the pressure exerted by molecular hdrogen in lattice voids or defects while the other9-10 attributes the embrittlement to the influence of hydrogen in the lattice. The mechanism used to explain the nature of the crack kinetics in delayed failure is based on the stress-induced diffusion of hydrogen to the area of maximum triaxiality.3 When the hydrogen concentration in this region reaches a critical value, a crack is nucleated. This initial crack propagates instantaneously until stopped by the higher fracture stress of the adjacent material of lower hydrogen content. The continuation of cracking must then await the further diffusion of hydrogen to the new region of triaxiality near the base of the crack where another initiation will occur. From this mechanism it follows that crack propagation is nothing more or less than a series of initiations with limited fracture. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the kinetics of crack growth in an effort to determine whether or not the process was discontinuous. Studies of crack propagation were conducted at low temperatures to retard the diffusion of hydrogen which is presumed to be the rate controlling process in delayed failure. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE Specimen Preparation—A commercial heat of air-craft quality SAE-AISI 4340 steel, designated as Heat G, was furnished by the Republic Steel Co. in the form of %-in. hot-rolled bars. The material had the following chemical analysis: Composition of 4340 Steel—G Heat C Mn Si Ni Cr Mo 0,395pct 0.82pct 0.29pct 1.76pct 0.85pct 0.25pct Notched tensile specimens with less than a 0.001 in. radius, Fig. 1, were used throughout the investigation. In Rotterdam a number of underground parking facilities have been built and are under development in the inner city, and in the suburbs. These parking facilities are located at already densely built areas. The design of these constructions has to take into account the impact of the building activities and that of the final construction on the surroundings. In this paper some examples of the different building methods of newly realized underground parking facilities are described, and problems that occurred during the construction are pointed out. In the soil conditions as present in Rotterdam the cost effectiveness of underground facilities can be improved by deepening the parking facility, and at the same time reducing the surface area so that the total parking volume remains constant. In this way the total volume of the diaphragm walls and the costs of the project is reduced.

HE electrolytic zinc plant of the American Zinc Co. of Illinois, at Monsanto, was expanded in 1943 to a capacity of 100 tons of slab zinc daily. This capacity was not attained because of inability of the leaching plant to deliver an adequate amount of solution for electrolysis. Changing the leaching method so that the acid was added to the roasted zinc material reversed the usual procedure and made it possible to attain the desired capacity. The conditions which prevented satisfactory work before this change and the difficulties which arose in reversing the usual leaching procedure are described. The "reverse" leach operation as now practiced is carried out as follows: All the calcine to be leached is fed continuously to a slurry mixing tank. About one third of the acid to be used is fed to the tank with the calcine. The slurry is discharged continuously to a Dorr duplex classifier in closed circuit with a Hardinge mill. The classifier overflow is pumped to any of six leaching tanks where the leach is completed. A finished leach is discharged through Allen-Sherman-Hoff pumps to Dorr thickeners, from which the overflow goes to the zinc dust purification and the underflow to vacuum filters. This change in leaching procedure from the usual one of adding calcine to a large amount of acid made it possible to provide an adequate amount of purified solution to the electrolyzing division and at the same time filter and dry all the residue produced. Operating savings in reagents and better metallurgical recoveries were also important benefits. The original flowsheet of the leaching plant provided leaching, sedimentation of the insoluble residue, and purification of the neutral zinc sulphate solution with zinc dust. The thickened residue was filtered and washed. The purification cake of excess zinc dust, precipitated copper and cadmium, and any insoluble residue was filtered off on plate-and-frame duplex classifier. Settlement in the thickeners was inadequate and the suspended solids in the thickener overflow gave rise to filtration difficulties after the zinc dust purification. Further, the filtration and washing of the leach residue was poor, and it became necessary to pump a large amount of unwashed or poorly washed residue to storage ponds outside the plant building. Two causes of the poor settling and filtration were determined: Soluble silica and ferrous iron in the calcine treated. The latter was a result of poor roasting and with more experience ceased to be a major problem. The silica was a normal constituent of the feed and the working out of the problem became a matter of controlling its solubility. The obvious method to render the silica insoluble was by intensive roasting. This, however, met with total failure as such roasting resulted in silicates, probably zinc, soluble in the 13 pct acid used for leaching. Attempts were made to coagulate the fine gelatinous slime with addition agents. Glue, lime, starch, beef-blood serum and others were tried without success. All the suggested tried-and-tested means of operating the thickeners gave no consistently good results. Variations in leaching time, in addition of calcine to the leaching tanks, "conditioning" of the pulp by prolonged agitation, immediate discharge of the leach upon completion to avoid breaking up flocs were all tried and given up as ineffective. Byron Marquis, of Singmaster and Breyer, worked with the plant staff on a beaker scale until a leaching procedure was developed which gave consistent results and a promise of overcoming the difficulties which had plagued the plant operation. It was suggested that the difference in solubility of silicates and zinc oxide in sulphuric acid could be made use of in a leaching method where the acidity was controlled carefully. Such control is possible when acid is added to a slurry of calcine. This process reverses the normal procedure of adding calcine to a vessel of acid, hence the term "reverse leach" was applied. In this way, the overall acid concentration can be kept very low. In the tests made, it did not exceed 0.05 g per liter free sulphuric acid. Numerous advantages were realized when no silicates were taken into solution and later precipitated as a bulky gel. The gel had made reasonable thickening and filtration of the leach pulp and practical drying of the residue impossible. When the gel was eliminated, thickening rates were increased as much as five times. The volume of residue after thickening represented about 10 pct of the total leach pulp and had been as high as 95 pct when the gel was present. The thickened pulp was filterable and the filtered cake was dried readily after washing. The zinc extraction from the calcine was slightly lower. This was more than compensated for by the increase in zinc recovered in solution from zinc which had been trapped in the gelatinous residue. The amount of copper recovered was lower. However, the amounts of other impurities, such as arsenic, antimony, and germanium, taken into solution were lower. This was particularly true of antimony. Since the inception of reverse leaching, no concentrates have failed to yield solutions free of antimony even when present in the calcine to the extent of 0.2 to 0.3 pct. Oxidation of ferrous iron is a problem of reverse leaching. Ferrous hydrate does not precipitate at pH 5.3 to 5.4 where a leach is finished. The usual oxida-

INTRODUCTION Some years ago the authors proposed a modified procedure1 for carrying out micum index determinations2. The modifications consisted of using a drum of 50 cm internal length, i.e. half the length of the standard micum drum (a modification also adopted by the B.S.J.3), and the use of a + 25 mm coke instead of + 60 mm coke for the test. The proposed modified test and formulae for converting results obtained from it to standard micum test results and vice versa were based on the results obtained during the investigation of about 200 test cokes made in ovens of the South African Steel Industrial Corporation Limited (Iscor), the Fuel Research Institute co-operating with the experiments. Extensive testing of cokes has since been done at the Fuel Research Institute using both the standard and the modified procedures. The numerous test results obtained during this trial period fully support and strengthen the confidence originally expressed by the authors in the modified testing procedure. The scope of the modified micum index determination has in the meantime been extended by applying the testing procedure also to test cokes made in the Institute's experimental coke ovens, and also in this case the modified procedure has proved its usefulness. A difficulty is that when comparing the characteristics of cokes made in the Institute's two experimental coke ovens with each other and with those of cokes made from similar blends in commercial coke ovens, for example those of Iscor, the index values obtained invariably do not check exactly due mainly to inherent differences between the different types of oven4. For instance, resistance to abrasion of a coke made in Iscor's ovens is always appreciably higher than that of a coke made from the same blend (and having a similar moisture content) in the experimental ovens. This makes direct comparisons and the prediction of quality to be expected from commercial products, based on experimental coke oven results, difficult. It may also be added that workers in Great Britain some years ago reported a similar experience5. In the authors' opinion the main reason for the discrepancy is the relatively low height of the experimental ovens resulting in a much lower static pressure on the charge during coking than that obtaining in a commercial oven. The difficulty was pointed out and briefly discussed in a publication4 which appeared at a time when the micum test for coke evaluation had only just been introduced at the Institute, so that only B.S. shatter and abrasion test results were available for discussion in the publication. Needless to say, the introduction of the micum test by no means solved nor even alleviated the problem. On numerous occasions during the past few years the Institute has had to conduct contract investigations in its experimental coke ovens on behalf of companies which invariably desired an indication of the quality of coke likely to be obtained from certain coals or blends when coked commercially, more particularly in Iscor's type of coke ovens. It was, therefore, essential to accumulate statistical data which would enabe the prediction to be readily made. Fortunately the compilation of comparative coke-quality index values for the three types of oven under consideration has become possible as a result of coking investigations conducted in co-operation with Iscor over a number of years. During this period Iscor, on numerous occasions, kindly made available to the Institute portions of coals and blends coked in the Corporation's coke ovens, thus enabling parallel coking tests to be carried out in the Institute's experimental ovens. In this way enough statistical data became available to establish relationships between coking results obtained in Iscor's ovens and results obtained on similar coal charges in the Institute's ovens. The most practical and acceptable method of overcoming the problems of finding a suitable and simple basis enabling direct comparison between the cokes of the different origins mentioned to be made, is the assignment of descriptive arbitrary quality ratings, as indicated below, to the cokes obtained, it being argued that the quality rating assigned to coke made from a given coal or blend in the different coke ovens under standardized conditions should be the same, irrespective of differences in the index values obtained when subjecting the cokes to the usual coke evaluation tests. The system, which should enable the sponsors of coking investigations in the Institute's experimental ovens to make their own interpretations of the results obtained, is explained below. ARBITRARY QUALITY CLASSIFICATION OF COKES The Ml0m index1 (percentage material smaller than 10 mm after the test) of a blast furnace coke is a measure of its tendency towards breeze formation during handling -a low value indicating a low tendency. This is generally of greater importance under ruling South African conditions, than the M'40 index1 (percentage material larger than 40 mm after the test), which can be regarded as a measure of resistance to shatter. In fact, if the M10m value of a coke as made in Iscor's ovens is higher than about 11, the tendency of the coke to form breeze during handling and in the blast furnace is relatively so high that hardly any notice need be taken of its M'40 value, even if this is comparatively high. For this reason, therefore, much more weight should normally be assigned to Ml0m indices in the quality evaluation of cokes made from South African coking coals and blends, as the coals
