The formula developed by Salamon and Munro in 1967 has been used for the past 22 years in the design of bord-and-pillar workings in South African collieries. This paper re-assesses the formula In the light of Its past performance and examines the effect of mining method on coal-pillar strength. An account is given of the extension of the formula so that it can be applied beyond the empirical range for which it was derived, and the advantages of the extended formula (the squat-pillar formula) are described.

This paper initially gives a brief overview of Zinc Corporation of South Africa Limited (Zincor). The original design parameters of the Zincor roasters are compared to the current operation, and the requirements for efficient roasting are listed. Roaster operational problems experienced during the early to mid 1990's are outlined. A description of the investigation and the outcome to increase overall roaster availability are given. The history and the development of the use of oxygen at the Zincor roaster operation, with an account of the associated operational experiences, are explained.

During the latter part of the Civil War an income tax was placed upon coal and the production of coal in the various collection districts during the life of this tax is shown in the tabulation that follows. The counties that include coal deposits are shown for each district. No record exists now of the production by counties, but it is calculated here on the basis of tax collected. The accurate estimation of mining-block grades continues to be a challenging task for ore reserve practitioners. The estimation method used and the variability of the mineralization in the deposit are two factors that affect the accuracy of the estimates. The objectives of this study are to determine how different estimation methods perform on a given deposit and to determine the impact that the nature of the mineralization has on the results. A comparison of several estimation methods for prediction accuracy is performed based on conditional simulation results.

The importance of metallurgical information in reaching appropriate decisions during the development of mining projects is demonstrated. A financial analysis is calculated using discrete system simulation. The results are compared to the results of a traditional sensitivity analysis. The traditional analysis is shown to have the potential to overestimate the value of mining projects. The type of statistical distribution used in a random number generator affects the results significantly. The statistical method of analysis provides insight into the amount of metallurgical testing needed and provides verification of how representative the samples are.

The solution of set of equations for the bottom zone presented by a condition of a thermodynamic equilibrium, namely, an equilibrium constant of wustite reduction by carbon oxide, material and thermal the balances, supplemented by the equation of the heat balance for the top zone, allows to calculate the base indices of blast furnace smelting. The calculated indices are extreme accessible at the given parameters of charge and blast. The commissioning of a distributed digital control system for the grinding circuit at Cuajone was completed by mid-August 1985. Development of a successful strategy, excellent operator acceptability, and the visual aspects offered by the display of the central console improved mill through- put significantly. The inherent features of a digital system enhanced the flexibility in grinding control and allowed the milk and classifiers to be operated at maximum capacity. This paper discusses the strategy development and the production restrictions encountered, and evaluates the overall performance of the digital control system.

For the purpose of this paper the Otago Region is that covered by the Otago Regional Council. This area, like other South Island Regions, has a river system starting in the Mountains and are all gravel bed rivers. The gravel from these rivers has been the major source of aggregate in the region since the development of the province began. The majority of the aggregate is a mix of greywacke, schist and quartz, which will be referred to later with its production problems. The region has been broken down into various areas.

"This paper is based on the results of work conducted of the bureau's experiment station at Berkeley, Calif., in connection with the investigation of properties and methods of utilizing Western magnesite. The experiments described herein were made under the supervision of the writer, by W. C. Riddell and E. H. Delius, of the station's staff.In calcining magnesite for the production of magnesium oxide to be used in the preparation of oxychloride cement, the calcium carbonate present in the original rock may remain unchanged or appear in the finished product, either as CaO, or in combination with SiO2, A12O3, etc. As there is reason to believe that free CaO may have an effect on the behavior of caustic magnesia in the cement reaction, it is desirable to have a method for the determination of the relatively small amounts of free CO in the presence of a large quantity of MgO.The extraction of the free CaO with water free from CO2 at once suggests itself as a possible method. For the past 3 years, the authors have been conducting research sponsored by the National Science Foundation (RANN) to improve the process of excavation by drilling and blasting. The approach followed has been experimental where the development of stress waves and fractures initiated at the bore hole have been investigated in order to obtain a complete understanding of the dynamic Fracture process. The second step in the approach has been to introduce modifications in the drill and blast procedure which will permit closer control of the fracture process.

Mine regulators are normally used for proper air distribution in underground mines. They are deliberately introduced resistance in the regulated airway, and by altering sizes, they can distribute specific air quantities to regulated splits and free splits (4, 5). The enactment of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, the Federal Mine Safety and Health Amendments Act of 1977, and the regulations adopted by the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (now called the Mining Safety and Health ministration) prompted greater discussions of optimal mine regulator locations because of the Act's stringent ventilation requirements (2, 3). For example, by requiring the separation of the air used in the belt haulage entries from the intake and return airways, the regulations required the creation of a third type of airway---the neutral airway, as opposed to the intake and return airways, adding to the complexity of a mine's ventilation network. It is the intent of this report to show that panel regulators should be located in intake airways at the neck of a panel for a blowing fan system and in return airways at the neck of a panel for an exhausting fan system in order to achieve optimal air control. A computer simulation model is used to determine optimal mine regulator location.
