An important issue currently facing the mining industry in Australia is the management and cost to the industry and other stakeholders of entry into and exit from towns and their communities. These costs can be environmental, social, economic, political or reputational. The ability of companies to engage the trust of stakeholders, including: communities, governments and investors, is critical, and corporate reputation plays a significant role in this. For the industry to secure a long-term and sustainable future, it must have the technical, business and reputation assets to proceed in a cost-effective, environmentally acceptable and socially supportive way. This research assesses reputation as a critical competitive issue for mining companies, as technology and information make mining more predictable; the physical and human assets of mining companies are less likely to be the critical resource in a Resource Based View model of competitive advantage. The proposition is that in mining today, reputation as it facilitates day-to-day operations, regulatory zeal and access to new mine sites will become the rare, inimitable and valuable resource for mining companies. This paper reports on an ongoing research program to evaluate the impact a mining companyÆs reputation(s), with its various stakeholder groups, has on a companyÆs ability to sustain competitive advantage. Integral to this study is to develop an understanding of the relationships between mining companies and their stakeholders, and the importance of corporate citizenship polices to reputation and hence to corporate sustainability. Through the identification of the drivers of reputation for the various stakeholder groups, a model of reputation formation will be developed and also reputation measures for the mining industry in Australia. The preliminary findings of this research, the results of an industry focus group conducted with representatives from regional mining operations, are reported. The industry focus group was designed to enable a better understanding of who are the main stakeholder groups and how they regard mining companies and to inform the second stage of the research project a Delphi Study of the drivers of reputation by stakeholder groups. The aim of this research is to further the understanding of the relationship between corporate citizenship, reputation and performance in the mining industry, thus assisting companies to strategically manage their corporate citizenship investments.

The U.S. economy grew moderately in the second quarter of 1985 with real gross national product (GNP) recording a seasonally adjusted annual growth rate of 2.0%, up from the 0.3% growth of the previous quarter but significantly below the 7.1% growth of the second quarter of 1984 (table I). Personal consumption expenditures grew 5.3%, with purchases of durable and nondurable goods rising 7.4% and 5.1 %, respectively; nonresidential and residential fixed investment--the two components of fixed investment--grew 11.8% and 5.6%, respectively; and Government spending rose 3.6%. However, these gains were tempered by a major decline in the growth of business inventories (from $19.1 billion to $8.3 billion) and the continuing growth of the net export deficit (from -$28.4 billion to -$33.3 billion). While the high value of the dollar compared with other currencies has been a major cause of the expanding trade deficit, its value, as measured by the monthly Federal Reserve Board (FRB) multilateral trade-weighted dollar index, has declined over 17 index points from its February peak to 140.94 in July. The July dollar value was still high historically. The rate of inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted price index for GNP, remained low at 4.1%, down from 4.3% in the first quarter, and employment continued to grow at a rate sufficient to keep up with new additions to the labor force. Civilian unemployment has remained steady at 7.3% over the past 6 months. Industry Statistics The FRB recently revised its index of industrial production and changed the base year from 1967 to 1977,1/ The revised total index shows a 0.1 % higher annual growth rate between 1967 and 1984 than the previous index. In the slower growing or declining industries, such as metal mining, primary metals, and fabricated metals, however, downward revisions in the indices and rates of growth have occurred. The previous and revised annual rates of growth between 1977 and 1984 for several of the sectors of interest to the mining industry are shown in table 2.

"The Selmon Expressway includes an elevated structure extending across several miles of weathered karstic limestone geology, and represents a challenge for design because of the high variability of the material and the difficulty in characterizing the strength. The nature of the epikarst in this region of Tampa is such that variability can be extreme within distances of only a few feet. The weathered rock includes extremely soft soil infill within solution features on and within the formation. The limestone is so weathered that coring typically does not yield useful samples for strength testing, and in-situ Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) tests often encounter refusal blow counts. Thus the challenge for foundation design includes two components of reliability risks: the uncertainty associated with the ground conditions at a given foundation location plus the uncertainty associated with the foundation performance at a given location even when the stratigraphy is determined.This paper describes the design approach that has been implemented successfully for two projects at the Lee Roy Selmon Crosstown Expressway (LRS) in Tampa, Florida: the assessment and remediation of the reversible elevated lane (REL) foundations constructed in 2004, and the elevated expressways widening project constructed in 2012. Included in this design approach is a method developed for computing axial resistance in this local geology. Design for axial loading relies primarily on the development of side resistance, which was considered less subject to performance risks than base resistance. The calculation method incorporates a statistical analysis of SPT data, tempered by engineering judgment, to characterize stratigraphy at a given location into either soil, intermediate geomaterial (IGM) or rock.IntroductionThe subsurface stratigraphy of sites underlain by weathered limestone formations can be highly variable with respect to material layer thicknesses and strengths, even over short horizontal distances. This is the case for much of Florida, and particularly the Tampa area. Introduction The work, of which some of the results are described in this paper, was started with the object of investigating the properties of certain binary alloys of titanium made from powders. Our main interest was in the possible use of such alloys in gas turbines. We were attracted to titanium, as have been others, by its high melting point (I,724° ± 11°C.), its low density (4.54), and the likelihood that, if a relatively wide use could be found for the metal, it might become available in commercial quantities at a fairly reasonable price. The readiness with which the metal reacts with hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen was recognized from the very beginning. At the same time there seemed a good chance that alloys could be produced which, because of the formation of protective films, would resist the attack of these and other corrosive agents. No specifications were drafted to cover the 'quality' of the titanium hydride powder which was used in our work and which was, to judge by the results of a few preliminary experiments, the most useful source of titanium then (1944) available in sufficient amount for our purpose. During the course of our work, the need for such specifications became very clear (see Sections 9 to 12 of this pa per). Even today, lack of knowledge regarding the effects on titanium of impurities, some of which may later be looked upon as essential elements in commercial alloys of titanium, and difficulties in manufacture, make the preparation of specifications for commercial titanium and titanium compounds a doubtful procedure. The papers presented at the 1948 Symposium on Titanium, sponsored by the U.S. Office of Naval Research lend colour to this view. At the time our work was commenced, one had to depend upon the manufacturer to supply what he considered to be his 'best' material. It may be some time before we can ask for more than this, the question as to what is his 'best' being left to the manufacturer to decide. However, in this connection the results of our study may be of some value and on that account we are constrained to publish them.

High-grade coal is locked in the shaft protective pillars at 900 m below surface in the Czech part of Upper Silesian Coal Basin. To optimise recovery of coal from the larger size shaft protective pillar, room and pillar (called bord and pillar in India) is trialled to further develop these on smaller pillars. This development followed a constant gallery width of 5.2 m and 3.5 m height. The monitored pillar size in the first developed panel varied from 860 m2 to 1225 m2 of area. The stability of these pillars (i.e., natural supports) at this depth of cover is observed to be a vital issue to control ground movement and safety of the surface structures. A simple calculation of safety factor revealed that application of an empirical method for estimating size and shape of the pillar is inappropriate due to complex geo-mining conditions of the site. Accordingly, geo-technical instruments are installed in the panel for monitoring the stability of the diamond shaped pillar at different stages of the development. Extensive monitoring of the pillar behaviour by these instruments provided an important set of data for such optimum recovery. An established process of simulation-based pillar strength estimation is often used by the mining industry, but calibration is generally done with the help of empirical formulation. However, for the deep-seated pillar, the strength suggested by the existing empirical formulations (except the CMRI formula) is found to be much different from the instrument observations. Using a study conducted at Czech hard coal mines, an attempt is made to develop a strain-softening-based numerical modelling approach to assess pillar performance at deeper cover. The recorded value and nature of the pillar spalling in the field along with the CMRI formula are used to calibrate the developed simulation approach. An assessment of the stability of the developed pillars using simulated models did not indicate any collapse of the natural supports. This paper briefly presents difficulties in pillar design at great depth of cover and field and simulation results of pillar strength estimation in Czech hard coal mines.

"The proposed Minne Lusa Stormwater Conveyance Sewer is part of the Phase 3 Major Combined Sewer Overflow projects to be scheduled as part of the City of Omaha’s Long Term Control Plan (LTCP). The system features a 6,100 foot long, 14-foot inside diameter tunnel to provide for conveyance of separated stormwater from previously completed and future LTCP sewer separation projects to the expanded Storz West and Pershing Detention Basins and subsequently, the Missouri River. The tunnel will operate as a pressurized system and convey flows of up to 2,500 ft3/s resulting from a 10-year, 24 hour storm event. This paper provides a synopsis of the project with a focus on the overall design aspects related to siting the tunnel alignment in an urban environment, the hydraulic analyses performed to choose a pressurized system rather than an open channel system, and expected geologic conditions. Tunnel alignment and profile and geological profile are presented, as well as an overview of the construction related impacts considered during design. PROJECT BACKGROUND The proposed Minne Lusa Stormwater (MLSW) Conveyance System will provide for conveyance of separated stormwater from previously completed, and future, LTCP sewer separation projects to the expanded Storz West and Pershing Detention Basins and subsequently, the Missouri River. The project location is representatively shown on Figure 1; the overall conveyance system is represented in Figure 2. The MLSW Conveyance System consists of three separate construction contracts under Contract Numbers: OPW-52004 – The Storz West Detention Basin to 31st & Paxton Tunnel; OPW-52454 – The Storz West/Pershing Detention Basin Grading and Improvements; and, OPW-52752 – The Pershing Detention Basin to ML Outfall Channel. This paper focuses on the project covered under Contract OPW-52004: design and construction of an approximately 6,110 feet 14-foot inside diameter (ID) tunnel, constructed using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The tunnel will receive flows from the Paxton Boulevard (PB) and the John Creighton Boulevard (JCB) Stormwater Conveyance Sewers and convey the flows to the Storz West Detention Basin, resulting in CSO volume and flow rate reductions to the Minne Lusa Outfall Channel and the North Interceptor."

Type and shape of large dams founded on rock depend upon the expected deformation of their foundation. Their design consequently requires the assessment of the deformability of the rock mass at large scale. Seismic refraction, laboratory tests on rock samples and empirical formulas can provide an order of magnitude of the deformation modulus, with a limited degree of reliability. Direct in-situ measurement of the deformability of a volume of rock is therefore preferred, which integrate the effect of discontinuities, such as plate loading tests, dilatometric tests, etc. The authors have been compiling results obtained by in-situ deformability tests on a number of dam sites, including the Scarabée (“Petite Sismique”) method. This last method consists in thoroughly analysing the shape of seismic wave forms transmitted through the rock mass. It has been used since now more than 40 years over a large number of dam foundations, and has proved to provide a satisfactory assessment of the static deformation modulus. After comparing the results obtained from different methods on six dam sites, the Authors conclude that their reliability closely depends upon the size of the loading device in relation to the spacing of the discontinuities. Attempts to correlate results from different types of in-situ loading tests reveal difficult, because closely depending upon local geotechnical conditions at test location. Plate jacking tests appear to be the most reliable, because involving a relatively large volume of rock. On the other hand, the Scarabée method (“Petite Sismique”) allows a rapid assessment of the deformation characteristics of the rock mass at large scale, and has been found to provide values generally in agreement with those from plate loading tests, while dilatometric or flat-jack tests were found too dependent upon local conditions. The Authors conclude that preference should be given first to the Scarabée method, which uses light equipment and is quickly performed, together with an accurate geological and geotechnical assessment for interpretation. In a second stage, Scarabée shall be complemented by adequately performed plate jacking tests in selected locations, in order to cross-check results and refine the assessment. The general accordance between the results of the two methods, which both can integrate anisotropy of rock masses, justifies this statement.

"The south access road to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, known as Doyle Drive or Presidio Parkway, needs to be replaced. Built in 1936, it is the primary highway and transit linkage through San Francisco between counties to the north and south. The roadway is tucked into the natural contours of the Presidio and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one of the nation’s largest urban parks.The old steel truss structure will be replaced by a new concrete cast-in-place bridge. The foundation design of the new bridge is based on drilled mono shafts below each bridge column. Most shafts required large diameter permanent steel casing installed under strict vibration limitations since several historic landmarks are near the project alignment. Malcolm Drilling decided to use the largest oscillator in the world to install the piles.The area occupied by the Presidio is generally hilly, sloping down northwards to San Francisco Bay. In the western half of the project route, two bluffs rise steeply to about 80 ft (25 m). The bluffs are separated by a valley 60 ft (18 m) deep and 1,500 ft (457 m) wide, which is spanned by the old and new bridge. Overburden soils in this valley are made up of artificial fill, slope debris, ravine fill and Colma Formation, a fine to medium-grained sand unit with clay beds. The Bay Muds encountered in the project area are typically soft clayey silts, becoming medium stiff with depth.The basement rocks underlying the overburden belong to the Franciscan Formation, described as shale, sandstone, serpentine and greywacke, it is extremely variable in hardness, fracturing and weathering. The material can vary from very hard to very soft, can be slightly to very intensely fractured and almost not weathered, to totally decomposed within relatively short distances both laterally and vertically. Rock strength can vary from too weak to be tested to serpentine layers with unconfined compressive strength of 15,000 psi (103MPa) or higher. Groundwater levels in the area are typically no more than 10 to 20 ft (3 to 6 m) below the ground surface."

Continuous processing plants handling liquids have achieved a high degree of centralized automatic control. Many chemical plants are operated from one room, with automatic control of the various process flow rates. These plants know from experience that automatic control can produce higher through-put, better uniformity of product, decreased operating costs and reduction of storage capacity, Plants which process materials in the form of bulk solids have not been able to use control to as great an extent, primarily due to the lack of measuring equipment capable of providing the same types of continuous automatic control available with liquid flow meters. This paper will describe a scale for measuring flows of bulk materials on conveyor belts which is particularly adaptable to remote centralized instrumentation and automatic control, and will also describe some typical control applications. Fig. 1 illustrates the basic method of measurement of this scale. A conveyor belt idler is supported on a rigid carriage which in turn is mounted in two anti- friction bearings on the conveyor stringers. The pivoted carriage is prevented from rotating about the pivot shaft by an electric strain gauge load cell connected between the carriage and a cross support. Increasing load on the conveyor belt increases the moment of the carriage frame about the pivot shaft, and proportionally increases the tension in the load cell. The belt speed is measured by a conventional d. c. tachometer generator driven from a pulley, usually on the return belt. The speed signal from the tachometer generator and the load signal from the load cell are combined to produce a signal proportional to the flow rate of material in tons per hour, or lbs. per foot, or equivalent units, It will be important to remember, in considering various control applications, that the flow rate of material on the belt is composed of these two component signals, namely the weight of material and the speed at which it is moving. The feed rate is then indicated and recorded by a self-balancing potentiometer of the type used for measuring temperature by means of thermocouples. These instruments may also be equipped with integrating mechanisms reading the totalized tonnage over a period of time.

"This paper develops themes explained at two SAIMM platinum conferences. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long-term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can be increased significantly, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. Recent studies of NPV have aimed to simultaneously evaluate the impact of the optimized financial solution on the non-financial features of a project or operation.The case study presented comprised a commercially orientated review of the prefeasibility study designs and cost estimates of a platinum group metal (PGM) project in South Africa, followed by value chain optimization and sustainability studies of the project carried out simultaneously to identify potential value uplifts to be gained and guide the owners’ team going forward into the feasibility study phase. Some of the major aspects of the project that were found to have significant potential to add value included enhancement of the business model by the application of activitybased costing and theory of constraints, focus on the highest net value portions of the orebody in the early years of production, enhanced and optimized scheduling of the underground mining operation, application of dynamic grind and percentage mass recovery from ore to flotation concentrate (also known as percentage mass pull) to optimize revenue, application of elevated cut-off grades early in the life of mine, matching of the mining and processing capacity, expansion of the operation subject to capital availability, and installation of downstream processing facilities subject to regional third-party capacities.The investigation of non-financial project features focused on demonstrating that a financially optimized solution could also have a number of other benefits. These are mentioned briefly in the paper, which aims to present the status of the project at an early stage of its development."

Mining is being carried out using the sublevel open stoping method at the Kayad underground mine. The mine will ultimately reach a depth of 390 m. Kayad village is only 100 m (horizontally) from the underground mining areas. As a result, blast-induced ground vibration is one of the major issues for the residents of the village. This paper deals with the process involved in optimising blast design parameters at the development face blast, slot raise blast and ring hole blast to control blast-induced vibration within safe limits while ensuring improved production, productivity and safety. In total, 1041 development face blasts, 110 slot raise blasts and 52 ring hole blasts were conducted, and 2612 vibration data were monitored in the village at different locations. Initially, electronic delay detonators were used, with an emphasis on controlling vibration in the surface structures. Subsequently, shock tube (Nonel) initiations were used as the blasting faces reached lower depths. A comparative study was also performed for both the initiation systems. The orebody width generally varied from 3.1 to 7 m, and ring hole designs were optimised accordingly. The number of holes in a ring was up to seven and the depth was up to 23 m, depending on the size/width of the orebody. The ring blasts were performed with 64–340 kg of emulsion cartridge explosive and detonated with explosive weight per delay of 10.92–17.16 kg. Extensive experiments were performed and blast-induced vibrations were controlled in the village. Deck blasting (ie up to four explosives decks) was used in a blasthole and the explosive charges were separated by delay detonators, which helped to control the vibration in the village. The actual detonation time of each deck was recorded by monitoring the in-hole velocity of detonation of the explosives, and the charging patterns were optimised accordingly to get the desired blast results.CITATION:Roy, M P, Singh, P K, Sarim, M, Jaitawat, P S and Joshi, A, 2015. "Generally, the concentration of bauxite flotation tailings is around 10%, a large amount of water in tailings needed to be recycled in the flotation process. Sedimentation and dewatering properties of tailings were investigated under different conditions. Surface high negative charges on mineral particles are the key factor to destroy the settlement of tailings when the pulp pH is around 8.9. Hence, the modification of pulp pH around 7 is necessary to the diminution of the repulsive force between mineral particles and then the acceleration of sedimentation of tailings. Anionic polyacrylamine with molecular weight of 14 million is the best flocculant for the settlement of tailings in all tested polyacrylamines. P-toluene sulfonic acid shows better properties than hydrochloric acid for pulp pH adjustment when anionic polyacrylamine with molecular weight of 14 million is used as flocculant. Although the flotation of diaspore is depressed in the presence of polyacrylamine using sodium oleate as collector, but the recycling water traded by the combination of ployacrylamine and p-touenesulfonic acid does not show the depression effects on the flotation of bauxite ore. The lower residual content of polyacrylamine in recycling water treated by the combination of ployacrylamine and p-touene sulfonic acid plays an important role. INTRODUCTION Generally, the waste water generated from mineral processing plant is usually treated by sedimentation, oxidization, electrodialysis, ions exchange, active carbon adsorption and flotation technology, and the treated water is also used again in the industrial process. Flotation was adopted widely to improve the quality of bauxite from low grade diasporic bauxite in China. For flotation, the grinding fineness of bauxite is over 90% -0.074 mm, sodium carbonate and sodium hexametaphosphate were used as regulators, so the tailings pulp is very difficult to settle and be dewatered (Y. Wang et al., 2004; Y. H. Wang et al., 2007; Wang Yu-hua et al., 2008; Wang Yuhua et al., 2011). The water recycling of bauxite tailings are becoming the highlight for the industrial application of the flotation process for bauxite ore. Researchers in China shift their attentions onto this topic."

The Kempfield deposit is located in the Hill End Trough, one of several intracratonic basins developed during Silurian–Devonian time, in the eastern province of the Lachlan Orogen, Eastern Australia.The deposit contains an oxide resource of 5.8 Mt @ 58 g/t Ag and a sulfide resource of 14.4 Mt @ 45 g/t Ag, 1.7 per cent Zn and 0.6 per cent Pb, classified and reported in compliance with the JORC Code. The deposit has been previously explored by a number of companies, including INCO, Shell, Jones Mining, Golden Cross Resources and recently Argent Minerals Ltd (Argent). Argent is currently completing a definitive feasibility study with a view to mining the deposit.The deposit is hosted at the boundary between the Molong High to the west, comprising Ordovician sediments and volcanic rocks and the Hill End Trough to the east, interpreted as a back-arc basin containing Silurian sediments and siliceous-feldspathic volcanic rocks. The boundary between these two strato tectonic units is an imbricate thrust fault zone known as the Copperhannia Thrust.The Kempfield deposit is hosted in felsic volcanic rocks known as the Kangaloolah Volcanics. These have been in-faulted and folded into the Middle Ordovician meta-sediments of the Coombing Formation of metasediments along the Copperhannia Thrust. The Kangaloolah Volcanics belong to the Late Silurian Mumbil Group, comprising submarine carbonate-shale facies interspersed with extensive felsic volcanic piles, which grade conformably upwards into turbiditic sandstone and siltstone sequences (interpreted to represent a deeper depositional environment). These turbiditic rocks are known as the Campbells Formation, comprising siltstone, sandstone and andesitic tuff. The rocks at Kempfield are metamorphosed to lower greenschist facies, reflected through the different type of schists.Silver, gold, lead, zinc mineralisation is hosted in barite-rich horizons, near the boundary to quartz-phyric tuffaceous rocks in submarine, immature, reworked felsic ash tuffs. Barite appears to be hosted in greatest concentrations by the coarser grained volcanoclastic sandstones and grits, whilst intercalated siltstones are volumetrically minor and tend to return low barite and silver. Mineralisation is hosted in stratiform and probably stratabound barite-rich horizons. A northeast-trending, steeply dipping, metamorphic cleavage (S1) occurs throughout the project area.

P. Mousset-Jones I found the article most interesting and timely. I consider it imperative that mine case studies like this one are undertaken and published so that the practicing mining engineer and geologist can obtain a better idea of what is the preferred estimation and grade control technique to use, given the site-specific geology, grade distribution, etc. Mining companies, with operating gold mines, need to be encouraged to either initiate such a study in-house or support a research project by financing a graduate student at a local university. The latter method is preferable since it not only provides research support but also an excellent training opportunity for young mining engineers and geologists. Ideally, what is needed is exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and mine production data that can then be used to assess the efficiency of different estimation and grade control methods by comparing the results obtained using the drill/blasthole data with the actual production data. It is hoped that more mining companies will realize that the rewards from this kind of research greatly outweigh the sometimes perceived problem with releasing data to a university. I noticed that the authors used the blasthole data to represent the actual values, the validity of which relies heavily on the two key assumptions with regards to blasthole assays and in-pit ore-waste selection procedures. Could the authors comment in more detail on these assumptions and what criteria they used to check the validity of the assumptions? Since the article was published, have the authors had the opportunity to compare their estimates with the actual production data? It would be interesting to compare other estimation methods with OK and IK. For example, how well did the polygonal method used at the mine compare with the results given in the paper? I would like to mention that B.L. Kwa completed a similar study (Kwa and Mousset-Jones, 1986) using exploration drill-hole, blasthole, and production data from the Alligator Ridge mine in Nevada. The study compared a variety of estimation methods, including IK, and the final results are shown in Fig. 1. The IK method exhibits the smallest difference between estimated and production results and is closely followed by the indicator moving window (Ind MW) method. In answer to his request for comment on the validity of the two key assumptions made in our paper, we can only say that these are reasonable assumptions that are very difficult to validate. The assumption of blasthole assays being accurate can be partially validated by a careful analysis of the nugget component of blasthole variograms. The assumption that the in-pit ore-waste selection procedure in use was an effective one can only be validated through comparison between the mine estimates of ounces of gold versus the actual recovered ounces of gold at the mill. Neither one of these two assumptions has been validated to date due to several reasons. For example, the mine went through a change in management since the study. Similarly, no compelling reasons have been presented to perform detailed variogram analysis of the blasthole data. We do, however, believe that the obtained results (i.e., indicator kriging performs better than OK in a highly skewed deposit) will remain the same in relative terms, regardless of how valid these two assumptions may be. The most recent comparative study by D. S. Lindsey of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology also shows a similar ranking between ordinary kriging versus probability kriging, which is an extended version of indicator kriging. (communication to the Secretary) : Mr. Firmstone's paper is of great interest; but he has unfortunately otnitted to state the most important point, viz., the percentage of sulphur in the two materials he compares; and this omission vitiates the conclusions which he draws. Comparing by grade, instead of silicon-contents (as in his Table III.), the iron made using limestone with that made using dolomite, we find for gray-forge the average of four analyses under limestone to be, Si, 0.644; S, 0.089 ; while one analysis under dolomite gives Si, 0.508 ; S, 0.070. For No. 2 iron, the limestone flux gives, as an average of 19 analyses, Si, 1.107; S, 0.051; while the average of 4 analyses made with dolomite flux gives Si, 0.630; S, 0.056. It will be observed, that no No. 1 pig is given under limestone, while 14 analyses appear under dolomite, averaging Si, 0.950 ; S, 0.028. As nothing is said about changed conditions, it is Fair to presume that the ore and fuel, as well as the blast-temperature (which is stated to have been uniform at about 750' F.) remained practically the same; and since the sulphur in the two fluxes is not given, it is impossible to know whether the lower sulphur for equal silicon-contents is due to the use of dolomite or to other conditions. The use of dolomite would produce a more fusible cinder, and the furnace would be hotter than when using limestone; therefore, we might expect to see a grayer iron. The amount of So. 1 iron made with dolomite seems to confirm this supposition; and, under these conditions, we might expect more of the sulphur to be volatilized, and to pass off in the gases. The easier fusibility of the cinder would also permit more rapid driving; and this should reduce the amount of silicon and sulphur in the iron, as the amount of reduced metalloids in the pig is directly proportional to the length of time it remains in the reducing-zone.

Operators of mining vehicles are exposed to high levels of whole-body vibration (WBV) and are therefore at risk of developing vibration-related health disorders. For implementing an effective control strategy, it is imperative to locate the source(s) of vibration, and the specific changes that might occur to the vibration signals during its transmission through the seats to the recipient human body. With this objective, Seat Effective Amplitude Transmissibility (SEAT) values of seat modules used in dumpers (n = 10) and other heavy earth-moving machines (n = 11) were evaluated in an iron ore mine. Vibration was measured simultaneously on the seat and on the cabin floor beneath the seat using tri-axial and uni-axial accelerometers. The study aims at determining the quality of seat modules of the transport and non-transport vehicles from the perspective of their natural resonance frequencies and capability of any such seat in reducing harmful vibration. The highest acceleration values were observed in the z-axis for all the dumpers. SEATrms values ranged from 78 to 133% and SEATvdv values ranged from 72 to 130% for the dumpers. For other HEMMs, SEATrms values ranged from 55 to 125% and SEATvdv values ranged from 56 to 123%. Mechanical vibration contains multiple frequency components. To understand the changes taking place to the different signals at these frequencies, 1/3 octave band analysis was carried out for the signals recorded both on the seat and the floor. There was significant attenuation (38 to 57%) at 4 Hz for three Dumper seats, whereas they resonated in the range of 1.6–2.5 Hz. The transmissibility(%) in the resonating frequencies ranged from 108 to 156%. Resonance frequencies for the remaining seven dumpers ranged from 3 to 8 Hz. The spine has been reported to resonate at 4 Hz, whereas resonance at 1.6 Hz has little significance to human beings in regard to WBV of a seated person. Hence, the characteristic resonant frequency of 4 Hz of seats as observed in the present study has the potential of causing adverse impacts on spinal health. Evaluation of SEAT factors and resonance characteristics of seats are therefore recommended to be examined while selecting a mining vehicle for regular deployment in mines.

The aim of the research is to increase the recoverable value of poor, difficult-to-digest complex mineral raw materials. In the Republic Belarus, universal centrifugal-shock devices have been created for crushing, grinding and classification of ore and non-metallic mineral raw materials in dry mode, which differ from foreign analogues by a higher level of resource saving (including electricity and materials). Dry-ore preparation technologies have been tested on a pilot scale: fine crushing (replacing grinding in rod mills), grinding (replacing wet grinding in ball mills) and pneumoclassification on different types of ores, - which made it possible to identify the criteria for the suitability and unsuitability of mineral raw materials for their use. The possibility of regulating the upper and lower limit of the size of the finished material is established, the possibility of reducing the yield of slimes (-0,020 mm) to 5 times is determined. A comparative analysis of the contrast degree of separation characteristics of ore a similar granulometric composition, crushed in wet and dry conditions, is performed. The achieved contrast degree of gravity properties after dry grinding - 104,3; after the wet - 60.2. When enriching on a centrifugal concentrator, gold recovery to the concentrate after dry grinding increased by 13.12% while improving the quality of the concentrate from 78.3 g/t gold to 90.75 g/t. When testing the gravity-flotation scheme for the enrichment of poor gold-quartz ore, the increment of gold extraction after dry grinding was 7.6% for gravity and 9.5% for flotation; the total increase in extraction is 17.1%. The possibility of flotation of a larger material after dry grinding has been proved, with an extraction gain of 1.5% compared to the flotation of thinner material after ball milling. The influence of dry technology on the efficiency of the leaching of gold and silver (an extraction gain of 5.5 to 10%) and heap leaching (extraction gain - up to 18.3%) was studied. The positive influence of dry ore preparation technologies on the efficiency of gold and silver heap leaching and heap leaching, thickening and filtration is proved. Lines of dry ore preparation technologies can be used in modular complexes for processing technogenic raw materials.

"This paper reports on the long-term operation of a particle density meter (PDM) at the Bloomfield coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP). This unit has been operating continuously for over three years, providing real-time data to the operators to allow the monitoring of flotation circuit performance. PDM outputs include slurry density, solids concentration on both mass and volumetric basis, and particle density. Knowing the average particle density of a stream allows for the optimisation of the process in real-time.The calibration of the solids concentration measurement device proved very difficult as the factory calibration techniques and existing laboratory analysis did not give accurate or reliable results. The solids concentration device had to be re-engineered and a new calibration method developed that gave accurate and repeatable results. Independent verification of samples taken from the PDM was undertaken as part of the trial process.The operational reliability of the PDM was a major point of investigation. The initial installation of the unit revealed issues with large, misplaced material of up to 20 mm periodically entering the unit, leading to feed blockages. The presence of these misplaced, oversized particles in the flotation circuit was resolved by installing innovative automatic back flush systems on the PDM.From a plant perspective the PDM has been an invaluable instrument that has enabled irregularities in the flotation circuit performance to be identified, which sampling had not and could not readily identify. This was achieved by close monitoring of real-time tailings composition on a minute by minute basis over short and extended periods. Variations in the tailings stream with respect to particle density and solids concentration were traced back to other issues in the plant. In addition, the PDM has allowed cell optimisation with respect to reagent dose rate to be improved. "The MSHA prescribed method for the determination of quartz in airborne respirable-dust samples from underground coal mines is the P-7 method, a combination of /ow-temperature, radio-frequency ashing (LTA) and infra7 red analysis (IR). There is no prescribed procedure for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rock. Dispersive infrared (IR), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods are most commonly used for the analysis of quartz in powders. Several aspects of the experimental procedures, such as the preparation of the analysis sample from bulk samples, ashing techniques, scanning procedures, peak measurement location, calibration techniques, sample amounts, size consist and data interpretation, affect the results from each of the methods differently. Significant differences in analytical results obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) on the same samples are reported. All studies point to the need for reliable quartz analysis methods.In a recent research program, a procedure for preparing bulk-coal and host-rock samples for quantitative quartz analysis was developed. Further, the results from X-ray diffractometry and infrared spectroscopy for quartz content on identical samples were compared. Calibrations with pure and mixed standards were used to assess the influence of particle-size distribution, matrix and calibration on the analytical results. In this paper, several issues concerning the measurement of quartz in the samples of coal, host-rock and airborne respirable dust from mines are outlined and quantified. IntroductionThe literature on coal-mine airborne-dust control has identified a need for a better understanding of the sources, mechanisms and amounts of quartz in mine airborne respirable dust (Althouse, 1984; Jankowski, Nesbit and Kissel, 1985; Ramani 1988; Qin, 1988; Bhaskar and Xu, 1990; Bhaskar and Li, 1992; Ramani, Qin and Miola, 1991 ). To understand the quartz content in the source materials, bulk samples of coal and host rock must be analyzed. Establishing an analysis procedure for determining the quartz content in bulk-coal and host-rock samples is necessary for identifying the sources of quartz in mines; for establishing the relationships between the quartz contained in the source and in the airborne dust; and for controlling the content of quartz in the mined product and in the airborne respirable dust."

"Quality control of drilled shafts is greatly dependent upon the practices of the site personnel. For drilled shafts cast under slurry, inspection of the hole prior to concreting is very difficult or impossible. There are numerous non-destructive test (NDT) methods currently available to assess the integrity of drilled shafts. This paper will discuss the theory and use of an emerging NDT technology known as Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP). The Thermal Integrity Profiling method measures the elevated concrete temperatures that occur during the hydration process. These temperature measurements are made along the length of the pile and can determine the integrity over 100% of the pile cross section, both inside and outside the reinforcing cage. With the known shaft volume information, TIP can evaluate the effective shaft radius at each measurement location. With the increased use of TIP on highway projects, there is a need to have standard criteria for shaft acceptance. Shaft acceptance criteria can be based upon thermal measurements and subsequent analysis of the data to determine the average shaft radius, local concrete cover, and cage alignment. With this additional information obtained via the thermal testing method, acceptance methods based upon concrete cover can be developed. In this paper the Thermal Integrity Profiling method will be described, results from a case history will be discussed, and an acceptance criteria based upon concrete cover will be proposed.INTRODUCTIONDrilled shafts are an attractive foundation element in many applications due to their large axial and lateral capacities. When drilled shafts are cast in a dry hole, it is possible to inspect the hole prior to casting, allowing for very basic level of quality control, although the shape of the completed element is still unknown without some form of post construction testing. When drilled shafts are installed where soil conditions are unstable, the shafts will often be cast under slurry to support the surrounding soils during the construction process. When casting a drilled shaft under slurry, it is very difficult to impossible to accurately and efficiently inspect the hole prior to casting concrete and it is equally difficult or impossible to inspect the shaft during the casting process"
