This paper outlines the journey of cultural maturation and management system development at the Mt Rawdon (MRO) gold mine from its acquisition by Evolution Mining Limited (Evolution) in late 2011 to 2016.Evolution embarked upon a series of projects that aimed to improve the operational consistency and implementation of change on-site, while leveraging off the existing strengths of the operation. This document describes the gaps that were identified, the processes used to close them, and the resulting cultural change and production outcomes, with a specific focus on how to optimise the culture at any mining operation.MRO had a history of four owners in less than three years when it became a key asset of Evolution. The site leadership team (SLT) decided to influence the culture at MRO by reviewing and upgrading the existing management processes.The first priority was to improve transparency and collaboration at the SLT level, followed by improving competency in project management. The next phase was to strengthen the internal communication using a deliberately designed network of meetings, communication screens and other initiatives. Once there was some traction, the focus moved toward increasing production volume and decreasing cost per unit by improving short-term planning and execution capability. Together with other initiatives, this resulted in improved collaboration between all functions, which in turn netted over 37 per cent mining production uplift.Following solid success, a process of prioritisation and alignment management was implemented. This supported the ‘Mine to Mill one operation’ ideal and allowed the SLT to decide month-by-month what actions were to be prioritised. These priorities incorporated production realities and longer term imperatives of the balanced business plan.Much of this work was completed during a period of declining gold prices and a relentlessly strong Australian dollar, making it difficult to justify spending money on improvement projects. "Creating stable, safe, constructible and cost effective support to openings in segmental linings is often an important component of successful delivery of a tunnel project. The many constraints on successful implementation include operational, spatial, geotechnical, structural, and constructability. Failure to address these adequately can lead to significant impacts on cost, schedule, and safety. With reference to past project experiences, this paper provides a guide to the most commonly deployed solutions and their pros and cons to help designers quickly identify the most appropriate solutions for a particular project, or act as a starting point for developing new and/or project specific solutions. It highlights the challenges that designers and contractors must address together for successful support of tunnel openings, and the constraints that arise. It then describes the common structural forms of support, and how each form can mitigate the constraints, allowing an effective opening support system to be implemented. INTRODUCTION While only a small portion of the total excavated volume of a typical tunnel, cross passages are often one of the most complex elements of a bored tunnel to construct. Cross passages in soft ground typically involve ground improvement, groundwater control, and multiple temporary support measures to ensure safe construction in ground that has been overstressed due to the construction of the running tunnels. Permanent lining construction requires careful detailing of waterproofing and reinforcement to support both long term ground and water loads and support the broken out rings of the main lining. While there is not a great deal of literature specific to cross passage construction, the main issues are discussed in some detail by Lawrence and Taylor (2011). However, the temporary support of the running tunnel segmental linings during cross passage construction is not always given the attention it deserves. The authors have been unable to find much literature on the design of such systems, much less the considerations that have led to a particular solution. Lawrence and Taylor only mention two potential methods of support. It may be easy to dismiss the opening support as an inconsequential item, but selection of the wrong support type can have significant impacts on both cost and schedule."

"The Property of Opemiska Copper Mines (Quebec) Ltd. is in Levy Township, Chibougamau district, west of Chibougamau and south of Opemiska Lake. The original find was made in 1929 by the late Leo Springer and associates of Prospectors Airways Ltd., following observation from the air of an area of dark rocks in newly burned-over country. Work on the ground discovered three veins of high-grade chalcopyrite in gabbro (No. l, No. 2, and ""North"") and, after several seasons of trenching and diamond drilling, financed by Ventures Ltd., a shaft was sunk in 1936. This work indicated about 280,000 tons of six per cent copper ore to a depth of 500 feet. During this period, the senior author carried out a reconnaissance geological survey over the whole property and surrounding claims, which showed that the veins were in the gabbro portion of a large composite basic sill that had been folded with the enclosing lavas. Owing to the low price of copper and lack of transport work was suspended and the property remained dormant until 1951.In that year the company was re-financed, the property prepared for production, and further exploratory drilling undertaken. The drilling, based on structural indications, located a new vein of which the only previous evidence had been some irregular stringers. This vein, No. 3, was traced by drilling for a length of 2,000 feet and the indicated reserves were thereby increased to about one million tons. An additional vein, No. 4, was intersected in several holes.With this encouragement, plans for production were confirmed, and operations commenced' at the beginning of 1954 on a scale of about 400 tons a day, concentrates being shipped by truck to St. Felicien and thence by rail to Noranda. In the first year of operation concentrates were re-covered carrying 14,047,210 pounds of copper, 76,714 ounces of silver, and 6,259 ounces of gold. The operation is under the direction of J. P. Millenbach, General Manager, with J. M. Thompson as Assistant General Manager and F. G. Cooke as General Superintendent on the property."

China was once deficient in nickel and almost totally reliant on imports for its domestic needs, supplies mainly coming from Canada since the ending of imports from the U.S.S.R. in early 1960's. However, the discovery of the huge nickel/copper sulphide deposit in Jin Chuan, Gansu Province of northwestern China in late 1950's and its development and construction through the 1960's and 19701s, have much improved China's domestic nickel position. In 1985. China's nickel production has exceeded 27.000 tons, compared with only 7,000 tons in 1977. Today, Jin Chuan Nonferrous Metals Company operates two underground mines and a small open- pit; owns China's largest reserves of nickel and platinum, and the second largest reserves of copper and cobalt; and has become the most important subsidiary of China National Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation (CNNC) which was established in April 1983. The Jin Chuan nickel-copper mines are located in Jin Chang City, Gansu Province, 1,700 km west of Beijing in the People's Republic of China (Figure 1). It is believed that Jin Chuan mines have the second largest nickel reserves in the world, after Sudbury basin, Canada. The deposits are situated on the north slope of the Longshu Mountains, 50 km north of Jin Chang City, and border on the southmost edge of the Gobi Desert plateau. The deposits were discovered in 1958. The total strike length of mineralized zones was approximately 6.5 km long, which was divided into four mining areas by faults (Figure 2). The Longshu underground mine of No. 1 mining area began development in 1959, with full ore production capacity of 1,000 TPD. The open-pit, also in No. 1 mining area, which was brought into operation in 1966 with ore output of 5,500 TPD, was closed down in 1982. The East Extension of the open-pit was put into operation in 1983; present production capacity is about 2,200 TPD. Nickel production of Jin Chuan mines in recent years, and production capacity of each mining operation, are shown in Tables 1 and 2.

You here are all familar with the myriad of new laws, some enacted and some pending, that affect the mining industry. These laws, for example those dealing with suspended matter, affect us in Alaska as they do you. Likewise, our friends in government, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, provide us with the same fine services that they do elsewhere. I am not going to speak today about these, but concentrate on one act of Washington, D.C. the impact of which is felt, for now at least, principally in Alaska. A little more than a year ago, I spoke in Spokane on the subject, "Governmental Challenge to Mineral Development in Alaska." I outlined some of the policies of Government which were operating to change the rules under which the industry operates and to alter the relation- ship between government, industry, and the individual. At that time the Native Claims Settlement Act had not been passed, but was on the verge of being so. In reading over what I said in Spokane, I note that I touched on many points where Government was actually challenging mineral development in Alaska. With the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, many of these actions were given a cloak of legality, and machinery was set up to concentrate the drive to tie up the public domain, machinery which will allow govern- mental control and interference with the actions of individuals on something like 90% of Alaska's land surface. This remarkable law is going to affect each and every one of you. Now, a year after its passage, we are only just beginning to see its lesson for the future. It was created by a coalition of powerful groups, who got other groups to support them by promising to deliver something they had no intention of delivering. Alaskan issues are again being used to get various groups not to oppose legislation which will severely harm them. It will help to understand the nature of this new drive if we understand the Native Claims Act and how it came into being.

"From 2011–2016, there were 1,511 documented injuries, including 7 fatalities, from ground falls in underground coal mines in the United States. The majority of these ground-fall injuries were not caused by a major roof collapse, but from falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Roof screen can significantly reduce the number of these injuries and has been widely used in underground coal mines for surface control. Because of the potential of reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is further evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program using the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in Pittsburgh, PA.The load-displacement characteristics of an 8-ft x 12-ft panel of 8-gauge welded screen were evaluated using a newly designed, large laboratory screen test frame with multiple load pull locations. This screen was tested in a configuration that simulates current installation practices in U.S. coal mines. In this study, the effects of varying the number and position of the load pull location on the screen performance were evaluated. Ultimately, the type of information obtained in this and similar studies can be used to aid in developing wire roof screen design criteria and to assist mine operators in the selection and use of roof screen in underground mines.INTRODUCTIONThe large majority of ground-fall injuries are caused by falls of smaller rocks from the immediate roof. Various controls are currently being used in mines to control this surface rock, including the use of wire roof screen. In mines where wire roof screen has been installed, injuries from rock falls have been reduced dramatically (Robertson and Hinshaw, 2001). Roof screen has the potential to prevent hundreds of injuries caused by the fall of small rocks between permanent roof supports (Compton et al., 2007). Because of this potential for reducing ground-fall injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is evaluating the performance characteristics of welded wire screen as used in underground coal mines by conducting a laboratory testing program in the Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) in Pittsburgh, PA."

A major challenge in managing coal seam gas (CSG) water is predicting how much water will be produced as the industry develops. Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd (KCB) was commissioned by the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) to develop a tool to forecast where, when and how much CSG water will be produced in the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins under various industry expansion scenarios.The water production tool (WPT) uses the Theis equation, a non-equilibrium groundwater flow equation that accounts for the effect of pumping time on well yield in confined aquifers, to predict water production volumes. Where multiple pumping wells are in close proximity, the required pumping rates for coal seam depressurisation are reduced. Therefore, pumping effects are projected spatially to assess interference effects between wells. Water production is then upscaled to the projected scale of the CSG industry within the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins.Two modifications were made to address the dual phase nature of CSG extraction (a transmissivity reduction factor) and the impact of weathering at the eastern margin of the Surat Basin (a ænear edge effectÆ factor). These factors modify relevant hydrogeological parameters in a consistent and defensible manner to more closely match observed water production.The WPT was verified by comparing results to equivalent Theis equation calculations and to type curves provided by CSG proponents. Calibration was achieved by varying the spatial distribution and intensity of the near edge effect factor in conjunction with a chi-squared analysis of residuals.The tool, which is now being maintained and further developed by the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI), was built to balance numerical complexity against relative flexibility and simulation speed. The result is a tool that can produce statistically relevant results of prescribed scenarios to plan water handling and treatment requirements in discrete zones of operation.CITATION:Strand, R, Reading, L and Keir, G, 2013. "Chloride ions and their interactions with two organic smoothing additives – Cyquest® N-900 and HydroStar® 4208 – during copper electrodeposition were explored using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results revealed that chloride ions, up to a concentration of 40 mg/L, depolarized the copper deposition reaction. A combination of chloride ions and Cyquest N-900 inhibited the depolarization reaction during copper electrodeposition. It is proposed that the chloride ions acted as bridging ligands between copper and Cyquest N-900. Addition of HydroStar at a concentration of 2.5 mg/L depolarized the copper deposition reaction when no chloride ions were present. This behavior did not change with the addition of chloride ions at the concentrations tested, indicating that chloride ions and the polysaccharide do not interact.IntroductionElectrowinning is a major production method used to obtain high-purity copper. In modern tankhouses, copper is electrodeposited onto stainless steel blanks and then stripped, washed and bundled for delivery. Significant improvements in the quality of electrowon copper have been made over the last few decades. Additives, temperature, current density, electrolyte concentrations and agitation are known to influence the quality of copper electrodeposits (Jenkins and Eamon, 1990).The influence of chloride and organic additives on copper electrodeposition has been the subject of considerable research. The addition of small quantities of chloride and organic additives has been recognized to significantly improve the properties of copper electrodeposits. These additives are critical in the prevention of dendrite growth and the production of smooth, dense cathode deposits.Chloride ions have been reported to catalyze the copper reduction reaction and assist in the production of uniform deposits (Lakshmanan et al., 1977; Sun and O’Keefe, 1992). Moreover, it is generally agreed that chloride ions depolarize the copper deposition process at low (several millimolar) chloride concentrations. This is because chloride ions catalyze the reduction of copper (II) ions to copper (I) ions (Cu2+ ? Cu+ + e-) in the rate-limiting step of this process (O’Keefe and Hurst, 1978; Ilgar and O’Keefe, 1997; Hebert, 2005; Shao, Pattanaik and Zangari, 2007)."

Constructing upstream raises with tailings is an accepted and cost-effective practice in Western Australia, where the climatic conditions are favourable, desiccation (and hence overconsolidation) occurs rapidly due to air drying and there is a perceived low seismic risk. This is in contrast to many other settings, where there is either a positive water balance, high seismicity or a combination of both. In recent times, there has been an increased focus on seismicity in areas of Australia that have historically been considered to be of low seismic risk. The increased focus is driven by two recently published documents used by tailings practitioners and increased awareness from corporate entities, particularly those with mines in high-seismicity regions such as South-East Asia and South America (particularly Chile).The increased awareness has resulted in increased rigour being applied to seismic design of tailings storage facilities (TSFs) in general, and particularly upstream-raised TSFs. This paper compares the results of a seismic stability assessment for an upstream-raised TSF located in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, which has historically been considered a low seismic area, with a seismic stability assessment carried out for a crossvalley TSF containing similar tailings but located in a high-rainfall, high-seismic setting in South-East Asia. The influence of the adopted design earthquake values on the results of the assessments and the potential impact of the maximum design earthquake (MDE) on the design approach is presented for both cases. The results indicate that although the Western Australian site is located in an area thought to have low seismic risk, the screening level analyses suggest that the MDE could result in liquefaction of the tailings materials. Not surprisingly, liquefaction was also indicated for the South-East Asian site. The outcomes of the assessment are also presented.CITATION:Chapman, P J and Williams, D A, 2015. "A section of a London Underground expanded segmental lined tunnel constructed in the 1970’s progressively deteriorated after 2001, with extensive radial joint spalling and mid-segment cracking. As part of the PPP contract Tube Lines Ltd and their partners carried out various analyses of the tunnel, including analysis of laser scans of the tunnel, geotechnical testing through the tunnel walls, geotechnical desk studies, real-time monitoring and even full-scale segment testing. This paper discusses the behaviour of the tunnel lining in this setting, the causes of failure and the lessons that can be learnt from this rare example of a tunnel which was progressively failing in service. It is finally noted that a replacement tunnel lining was installed during night-time possessions and completed in 2015. INTRODUCTION In 2003, Tube Lines Ltd. was established under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) scheme to provide maintenance services and upgrade projects for London Underground (LU). The Deep Tube Tunnel Knowledge and Inspection Programme comprised the assessment of all tunnels, shafts and other underground structures. This included a number of lengths of tunnel constructed using segmental concrete linings. First used by LU in the 1960s, the savings both in cost and speed of construction led to concrete linings replacing cast iron for new tunnel construction in all but a few cases. During the initial scoping phase of this programme, inspections identified potential issues with the expanded concrete segmental linings on the Jubilee line. The inspections found a number of segments with surface spalling (Figure 1a), which did not appear on the post-construction defect records. These were generally relatively shallow, up to 40mm deep, spread over a wide area of segment. These were different to spalls caused by handling damage, which are typically localised at segment corners. Subsequent inspections over the following years identified an increasing number of segments with these types of spalls as well as an increased incidence of longitudinal mid-segment cracking (Figure 1b). The increasing occurrence of these defects was hypothesised to be caused by tensile stresses developing in the vicinity of the joint."

"Limit states design (LSD), or load and resistance factor design (LRFD), is a method to account for the uncertainty in loads and resistance through a reliability calibration that requires all applicable limit states (strength, service and extreme) to be checked during foundation design. LRFD has been in use internationally for several decades; however it wasn’t until recently that engineers working on highway projects were required to use the method for the design of highway bridges and other appurtenances. Although the bridge community has been using a form of limit states design for structural components since the early 1970s, the design of foundations for bridges, walls and other geotechnical features had long been performed using allowable stress design (ASD), whereby all uncertainty in loads and material resistance is combined in a single factor of safety. While the move to LRFD was viewed as a more rational approach for the design of bridges and structures, the transition to its use for geotechnical engineering has been met by many with confusion and difficulties in application. This article will revisit the history of transition from ASD to LRFD for geotechnical engineering, summarize the status of the transition and issues with its use, and briefly discuss some emerging research opportunities for improving and advancing the design platform.Background and HistoryUntil about a decade ago, foundations and substructures for bridges were traditionally designed using ASD, while the superstructure was designed using load factor design (LFD), a precursor to LRFD that incorporated factored design loads but no risk assessment. This combination led to uncertain and incompatible safety margins in design for the various bridge components. In 1986, the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Subcommittee on Bridges and Structures (SCOBS) concluded that the standard bridge specifications in use at the time for U.S. transportation projects had significant inconsistencies and gaps, wasn’t up to date with emerging technology and that the development of new specifications was warranted. The proposed solution by the subcommittee was to transition to a more coherent method of design where applicable failure and serviceability conditions could be evaluated considering the uncertainties associated with loads and resistance."

"The study of combined depressants for flotation separation of lead from copper has been carried out to solve the copper-lead separation problem. Test results show that the depressant of CMC (Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose) or sodium sulfite plays an important role on the selective depression of galena flotation. When the two reagents above are combined, the selective depression effect on galena is further enhanced. When the mass ratio of CMC to sodium sulfite is 1:4, galena was best depressed, with the lowest lead content in the copper concentrateClosed-circuit tests indicate that under a certain pH value of the slurry, with the best ratio of CMC to sodium sulfite as depressants, the copper concentrate with the grade of 28.23% copper and 4.12% lead is obtained, and the copper recovery is 84.87%; the lead concentrate with 68.12% lead and 0.86% copper is obtained, and the lead recovery reaches to 92.20%. An efficient separation of copper and lead is achieved with the combined depressants. INTRODUCTIONComplex copper-lead-zinc sulfide ore is abundant in China. With the rapid increase of mineral consumption, it has become one of the important sources to produce copper-lead-zinc metals. However, it is difficult to achieve effective separation of copper and lead, due to the complicated ore properties, such as fine dissemination, low copper grade, complex symbiotic relationship and similar floatability of copper and lead.Poisonous reagents of bichromate and cyanide are often used as depressants for copper lead separation. They have good separation efficiency, but pose serious pollution issues. As the environmental protection is becoming more and more important, it is a trend to replace traditional toxic reagents with new nontoxic efficient chemicals. Organic depressant FCLS studied by Liu has strong selectivity against galena, and does not depress chalcopyrite. A new type of galena depressant of CLS-01 discovered by Jin-lin Yang shows good results in the separation a mixed copper and lead concentrate. In addition, dextrin, chitosan and some other natural organic compounds (Drzymala, 2003; Huang, 2012; Qin, 2013) have also been studied to separate copper and lead."

"This paper presents the results of a comprehensive study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) to evaluate the effects of longwall-induced subsurface deformations and permeability changes on shale gas well integrity and safety under shallow cover. NIOSH researchers selected a study site over a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine, which extracts 1,500-ft-wide longwall faces under 482 feet of cover. One in-place inclinometer well and three permeability monitoring wells were drilled and installed over a 125-ft by 275-ft centers abutment pillar. In addition to the inclinometer well and monitoring wells, surface subsidence measurements and underground coal pillar pressure measurements were conducted as the first 1,500-ft-wide longwall panel on the south side of the abutment pillar mined by the site.A number of FLAC3D finite difference simulations (Itasca Consulting, 2017) were conducted to estimate surface subsidence, coal pillar pressure increases, and horizontal displacements in the in-place inclinometer (IPI) monitoring well. Comparisons of the FLAC3D finite difference simulation results and the surface, subsurface, and underground instrumentation results show that the measured IPI casing deformations are in reasonable agreement with those predicted by the FLAC3D models, and that the measured surface subsidence and underground pillar pressure are in excellent agreement with those predicted by the 3D models. Measured permeability changes were incorporated into a preliminary calculation to evaluate the effect of a hypothetical shale gas well leak on longwall ventilation. Results from this 2018 research clearly indicate that under shallow cover, the measured horizontal displacements within the abutment pillar are at least one order of magnitude higher than those measured in a 2017 study under deep cover and slightly higher than those measured in a 2014 study under medium cover. This research represents a very important step and initiative in utilizing the knowledge and science obtained from mining research to improve miner and public safety as well as the safety and health of the workers in the oil and gas industries"

A novel explosive formulation that substitutes the use of ammonium nitrate (AN) with hydrogen peroxide (HP) as the main oxidising agent has been developed and tested as part of an Australian Coal Industry Research Program (ACARP) project. The main objective was to provide a step-change solution that has the potential to completely eliminate NOx fumes in blasting. The development of this HP/fuel-based explosive started with a comprehensive detonation characterisation program, consisting of unconfined velocity of detonation (VOD) measurements of samples at different diameters, densities and void sensitisation techniques. VOD results showed that the HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures behaved similarly to non-ideal commercial explosives; in that way mixtures could be tailored to achieve specific detonation performance targets. The next stage of testing in this development involved preliminary confined tests to evaluate the rock breakage potential of the HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures. Fully instrumented single-hole tests were conducted in a limestone quarry. Results from these preliminary trials confirmed the rock breakage performance of HP/fuel-based explosive mixtures. The confined VOD measured in one of the tests was 5100 m/s in a 102 mm diameter blasthole at a density of 0.96 g/ml. The corresponding borehole pressure measurement of this HP charge was 2.61 GPa with a detonation temperature of 2921°C. Based on near-field accelerations, both HP and ANFO charges displayed similar attenuation characteristics in the test conditions. Post-blast observations indicated that the breakage performance of the HP mixtures clearly reflected the in-hole detonation performance measurements obtained, confirming the ability of these explosive mixtures to both fragment and effectively displace the rock mass under evaluation. "A comparison between hydrogen-diffusion-based micro-porosity formation and growth behaviour of two important aluminium foundry alloys, B206 (Al-Cu) and A356 (Al-Si-Mg) is presented in this paper. Specifically, the predicted pore size and pore fraction distribution of these two alloys resulting from directional solidification and identical hydrogen concentration are investigated numerically based on a model proposed by Yao et al. (2011. Met. & Mat. Tran. A. 42A, 4137–4148). This model takes into consideration the initial hydrogen content in the melt, the cooling rate, the partitioning of hydrogen between the solid and liquid phases, and the evolution in solid fraction with temperature. Due to different alloy chemistries, the activity of hydrogen in B206 and A356 are quite different, as are the solidification range and the resulting solidification microstructure. Being a primary alloy, B206 has dendritic microstructure and solidifies over nearly 135°C (505–641°C), whereas A356 contains fifty percent eutectic microstructure, and solidifies over 80°C (533–613°C). This allows a very different behaviour of micropores i.e. the effective pore radius in B206 is quite a bit lower as compared to A356, as is the pore number density. The evolution of local hydrogen concentration in liquid metal is analysed and compared for both the alloys.INTRODUCTION Over the past decades, the demand for materials with enhanced strength-to-weight ratios has significantly increased in the aerospace and automobile industries in order to improved fuel efficiency. For many automotive components, particularly shape castings, the trend is towards replacing ferrous alloys with aluminium alloys. The increase in the use of Al is primarily due to its low density, about one-third that of steel, and its relatively good strength that allows for weight reduction without reducing performance. Presently, Al-Si based alloys (e.g. A356) are the most prevalent due to their good mechanical performance in strength-to-weight ratio and excellent castability (Atwood et.al., 2000). However, superior mechanical properties can be achieved using Al-Cu alloys. For example, the alloy B206 offers a higher strength while retaining excellent ductility (Poirier et.al., 1987)."

"Darcy’s law has been used extensively to model cake filtration. It is a macroscopic model, in which particle size dominates the kinetics and cake moisture. In the present work, a capillary flow model has been developed from first principles to study the effects of microscopic parameters such as capillary radius, boundary layer slip, disjoining pressure, and surface tension that may be important for dewatering ultrafine particles. Laboratory-scale pressure filtration tests show that dewatering kinetics is strongly dependent on capillary radius, which in turn is influenced by surface hydrophobicity, surface charge, and length scales of particles. The model parameters determined from laboratory-scale filtration tests show that use of a hydrophobizing reagent can greatly improve fine particle filtration due to increased slip and decreased capillary pressure. The kinetics of dewatering kaolin clay is fastest at a pH where the layer-structured particles coagulate with a face-to-edge orientation. The capillary flow model developed in the present work may be useful for designing filters and optimizing operating conditions.INTRODUCTIONIn 2014, Canada produced 2.2 million barrels per day of crude oil from the oil sands resources in Alberta, which is expected to grow to 3.2–4.0 million barrels per day by 2030 (CAPP, 2013). One of the challenges to meeting these projections is the tailings management. At present, the industry uses ?77 km2 of the lands to construct tailings ponds. Significant amounts of the tailings disposed to the ponds are silts and clays that are slow to settle and consolidate, creating problems for reclamation. It is, therefore, the objective of the present work to develop a filtration model that may be useful for developing advanced dewatering technologies that can address the tailings management issues.Darcy’s equation is the governing law for filtration. It was derived as an empirical model by H. Darcy in 1856 while he was studying fluid flow in sand filters (Hall, 1956). Since then, many investigators derived it from first principles. It relates superficial fluid velocity to the pressure drop across a porous medium of known permeability. In filtration, the latter can be related empirically to particle size using the Kozney equation (Yoon, 2005)."

Subsurface fires are a common threat to coal mining, as spontaneous combustion of coal can potentially result in gas combustion and explosion. Fire-proof techniques, such as grouting, foam, or colloid injection, are not in a position to function ideally, due to the limited coverage and stopping the extinguishment substance from reaching the fire location. Liquid nitrogen, as a kind of all-submerged fire prevention or extinguishing method, can rapidly extinguish fires, thus preventing gas explosion and minimising extinguishment time. Injecting liquid nitrogen through boreholes is an important way during the period of mine catastrophe. But liquid nitrogen is not effective enough in infusion; technical issues restrict the development and utilisation of liquid nitrogen fire prevention and extinguishing technology. Immediate infusion of liquid nitrogen is usually associated with ‘air slug’ (the balloons and bubbles in the pipeline which hinder the flow of low-temperature liquid), which blocks pipelines for liquid nitrogen injecting. Another issue is that the pipeline tends to be damaged due to freezing, which undermines the injecting efficiency of liquid nitrogen and its application result. In order to solve the problems of the low efficiency and some other related field issues in liquid nitrogen perfusion, the ground–underground high efficiency liquid nitrogen injection technology were developed. Implementation of liquid nitrogen infusion techniques in Chinese coalmines achieved the goals of fire prevention and air-cooling. The technique presented in this paper is efficient in absorbing heat, and consequently, displacing oxygen and combustible gases. Field tests at Rujigou and Yangchangwan Coalmine justified the efficiency of the technique. By using this technique, there was no waste left behind, which may impede the subsequent production. The presented technique is of great benefit to the social, economic, and environmental aspects of mining operations, and will have broad applications in fire prevention for large-scale coalmines.CITATION:Zhou, F, Shi, B, Li, Y and Ma, L, 2015. "Freeport-McMoRan’s Sierrita operations refines molybdenum disulfide in a ferric chloride leach to remove impurities. To understand bottlenecks in the leach process and the true capacity of the leach system, a cross-functional team was established to look at theoretical models, kinetics of the leaching process, equipment limitations and operational strategies. A series of in-plant tests were run which resulted in a road map for improved throughput. INTRODUCTION Molybdenum, a vital component in the steel industry, is often found in nature as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). Molybdenum disulfide deposits can exist as standalone components in an ore body, or can also be found within copper porphyry nodes. Processing for these copper/molybdenum porphyry ore bodies involves a first stage of flotation to produce a bulk concentrate before separation of the copper and molybdenum concentrates in a second stage of flotation. In this second stage of flotation, a reagent is added to suppress the copper particles, while allowing the molybdenum disulfide particles to remain hydrophobic and continue to float. This separation is very good at keeping the molybdenum out of the copper concentrate; however a portion of the copper continues to float through the circuit. As a result, there is typically some amount of copper in the final molybdenum concentrate. This copper must be removed in order for the molybdenum disulfide product to meet product quality specifications. Once the raw molybdenum disulfide product has been made, a separate process must be applied to remove any copper, lead, or other impurities remaining in the concentrate. This process usually involves the selective leaching of impurities out of the bulk solid. Gupta mentions three specific types of leaching agents, sodium cyanide, ferric chloride, and hydrochloric acid for the removal of sulfide impurities. Sodium cyanide is useful for the removal of copper compounds such as bornite, covellite, and chalcocite.1 Sodium cyanide solution dissolves these copper compounds, and the remaining molybdenum solids are filtered to produce a pure molybdenum concentrate. Ferric chloride works similar to that of sodium cyanide, but is particularly efficient in removing chalcopyrite and galena compounds. These compounds are easily chlorinated at elevated temperatures, producing copper chloride and lead chloride, through the reactions presented below:"

"Hydrometallurgical processing involves process stages, like leaching, that create harsh environment for stainless steels. High acidity, the presence of chlorides and oxidizing ions combined with relatively high temperature create risk for both uniform and localized corrosion. Advanced electrochemical techniques were employed to study uniform and pitting corrosion of two stainless steel grades 316L and 2205. Results obtained with the linear polarization resistance technique combined with the harmonics distortion analysis, electrochemical noise and coupled multielectrode array systems are compared to the results of conventional electrochemical techniques and immersion tests.INTRODUCTIONHydrometallurgical processing has become favoured in metals production in recent years due to energy costs, leaner ore bodies and environmental factors. Because the hydrometallurgical processing route is flexible, various types of secondary raw materials, like flotation tailings, dusts, sludges and slimes can also be treated in addition to conventional mineral concentrates (Sarveswara Rao & Acharya, 2008).Hydrometallurgical processing relies on aqueous chemistry, usually acids, at temperatures around 100°C for the recovery of metals from ores, concentrates, recycled or residual materials. The processing route can typically be divided into three stages: leaching, solution concentration/purification and metal recovery. The processing environment is aggressive, especially in leaching. High acidity, relatively high temperature together with impurities, like chloride ions, place high demands on the corrosion resistance of construction materials. The dominant corrosion mechanism may be uniform corrosion or localized corrosion depending on the process conditions (Ekman & Torsner, 2010). This complicates the prediction of corrosion rates and, consequently, cost effective material selection.Traditional means to evaluate uniform corrosion resistance of stainless steels are immersion tests and the results are published in the form of iso-corrosion diagrams (Outokumpu Stainless, 2010). For the localized corrosion, namely pitting and crevice corrosion, immersion tests can be used but the duration of the test is rather long because an incubation period takes place prior to the occurrence of the actual localized corrosion damage. Electrochemical techniques, traditionally in the form of cyclic polarization scans, have been employed to assess the susceptibility of a material to pitting corrosion (Papavinasam, 2008). They cannot, however, give any indication of the pitting corrosion rate and lack potential for on-line measurements."

The characterization of respirable dust on the basis of constituent fractions and particle sizes is increasingly of concern for evaluating exposure hazards. For high-resolution particle analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) can be an effective tool. However, it requires particles to be deposited on a smooth, uniform substrate such as a polycarbonate (PC) filter for optimal results. While direct sampling onto PC is possible, this is not the standard approach in many situations. For example, in coal mines, respirable dust samples have typically been collected onto polyvinyl chloride (PVC) filters because they are intended for gravimetric and/or infrared spectroscopy analysis. Such fibrous substrates are not ideal for SEM-EDX (or other microscopy), but an effective method to recover and redeposit the dust particles could render such samples suitable for the additional analysis. Here, we present a simple method and compare SEM-EDX results for paired samples analyzed directly on PC and following recovery from PVC and redeposition on PC. Both laboratorygenerated dust samples (n = 10 pairs) and field samples of respirable coal mine dust (n = 44 pairs) are included in this study. Although some changes in particle size distributions were observed between samples analyzed directly and those that were recovered and redeposited prior to analysis, the results indicate the dust recovery method generally yields a representative sample in terms of mineral constituents. That said, results also highlighted the effects of high particle loading density on individual particle analysis. Considering all sample pairs, those with similar loading density between the directly analyzed and recovered sample tended to exhibit similar mineralogy distributions. This was generally the case for the lab-generated sample pairs, and the Freeman-Halton exact test of independence indicated that the samples in just three (of 10) pairs were in disagreement in terms of their mineralogy distributions. On the other hand, for the field samples, the directly analyzed sample often had higher loading density than the recovered sample; and the Freeman-Halton test showed that 25 (of 44) pairs were in disagreement. However, the effect of possible particle agglomeration on the directly analyzed samples cannot be ruled out—and exploration of this factor was beyond the scope of the current study.
