Pumps play a critical role in mining operations, and their energy consumption and environmental impact are significant. This paper addresses the need for a holistic approach to sustainable pump deployment by expanding on previous work presented at IMPC Asia Pacific 2022 and World Mining Congress 2023. The research takes a significant step forward by outlining a structured approach to estimate and demonstrate sustainability tailored for operational slurry pumps. It details the calculation methodologies used to quantify the carbon dioxide emissions from electricity, wear materials and transport, as well as sealing water usage. To enhance practicality and usability, a simplified visual representation—called sustainability metrics—has been developed to monitor overall efficiency. The sustainability metrics consist of the availability, pump efficiency, and water utilisation efficiency. The proposed methodology is integrated with Pumps Condition Monitoring Service to maximise benefits. Three case studies, from iron ore, copper, and nickel operations globally, were employed to evaluate the proposed methodology. The findings demonstrate the critical role of sustainability calculations in understanding pumps operation. These calculations improve awareness of the pump’s role in the sustainability journey and enable effective monitoring. The studies highlight that continuous monitoring paired with effective prescriptive maintenance strategy can significantly reduce power and water consumption while maximising pump availability. The case studies also reveal significant shortcomings in current operational practices and non-optimal maintenance regimes, emphasising the need for practical recommendations to maximise savings and optimise pump performance. In the context of increasing climate change awareness and the imperative for global decarbonisation, this research highlights the necessity of critically assessing methods and operations to drive sustainability in the mining industry. By adopting a holistic approach to sustainable pump deployment, mining operations can effectively reduce their environmental impact while enhancing operational efficiency and economic viability. The proposed methodology and case studies provide valuable insights and practical recommendations for mining companies seeking to achieve sustainable practices and contribute to a decarbonised future.

The Kennecott Utah Copper Modernization Project, initiated in 1986, was directed to provide an expansion and modernization of mining and process facilities at the property's Bingham Canyon Mine and ore concentrators. Major components in the project included installation of an in-pit ore crusher, transfer conveying system, and construction of a new copper ore concentrator with a design capacity basis of 70,000 tonnes/day. The Copperton Concentrator was commissioned in February 1988. A principal feature of the plant is the grinding circuit, comprised of three identical lines, each consisting of a 10.37 m (diameter) by 4.57 m (length) Semi-Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill and two 5.54 m (diameter) by 8.62 m (length) ball mills. The SAG mills are driven by two variable-speed 9,000 kW DC motors coupled through a clutch-pinion gear-ring gear assembly. The ball mills are driven by 4,125 kW synchronous motors coupled through a typical clutch-pinion gear-ring gear system. The expansion and particularly the Copperton Concentrator performance was so successful that by early 1989, management began examining options to further expand production capacity. With regards to the concentrator, numerous alternatives were considered, ranging from installation of a grinding line similar to one of the existing lines, to a "super" line consisting of a 12.8 meter (diameter) SAG mill and a 20,000 kW motor with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes per day. The technical and economic analysis of the various scenarios indicated that one "large" 11.0 meter (diameter) by 4.88 meter (length) SAG mill with a production capacity of 32,000 tonnes per day and a 12,000 kW drive would be optimum. The key question to be answered in the project was whether to continue with the pinion-ring gear combination, or install a gearless drive. The following paper outlines many of the items that were evaluated in the mill selection process followed by actual plant performance, and a discussion of ongoing plant continuous improvement projects.

"A limiting factor for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) performance is the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode surface. Changes in the surface composition and structure on annealing at 800°C has been studied, since these can influence the ORR. Idealized single crystals of cathode materials La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSM) and La1-xSrxCoyFe1-yO3 (LSCF) were grown as heteroepitaxial thin films on lattice matched single crystal substrates. Changes upon heating the films to operating temperature and pressures were characterized using various synchrotron x-ray techniques. Total Reflection X-ray Fluorescence (TXRF) measurements, which probe compositional changes, were made at high temperature in real time. The LSM surfaces were found to develop manganese enrichment when heated. Highly strontium doped LSCF were found to develop strontium-rich surfaces. HArd X-ray PhotoElectron Spectroscopy (HAXPES) was used to investigate the electronic structure of the materials. Highly strontium doped LSCF precipitates a surface strontium phase that contains both oxide and carbonate contributions.IntroductionSolid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are chemical to electrical energy conversion devices that could potentially reshape how energy demands are fulfilled. SOFCs have a potential efficiency over 70%, fuel flexibility, low emissions, and low degradation over long time scales. Commonly, SOFCs are operated at high temperatures (above 800°C). At these temperatures expensive housing is needed to contain an operating stack as well as coatings to contain the oxidation of the metallic interconnects. Lowering the temperature of an operating device would allow for more conventional materials to be used, thus lowering overall cost. Understanding the reaction kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction at the surface of the cathode is vital to designing a system that will perform well at lower temperatures. The processing capacity, ease of use, and reliability are featuring Metso?s state-of-the-art cone crushers. Crushing is a complicated process affected by numerous parameters. The optimized crusher kinematics is one of the key factors for high performance. To fine tune the crusher kinematics and crushing chambers one needs to know how different parameters affect. The main cone crusher parameters are head angle and diameter, gyration point, shaft speed, eccentricity, stroke length, and inclination and design of crushing cavity. Selecting the correct combination of these parameters is a multi task optimization challenge. In practical life there are more factors to achieve satisfactory performance, like crushing chamber wear and profile management keeping the performance constant over the whole wear life, control of crusher frame loads, ability to handle disturbances in feed material etc. The extensive research work has lead to a solution that enables the highest possible material density in the crushing chamber. This design provides maximum reduction of processed material and thus increased share of 0/10 mm product. High density in the cavity offers further benefits, such as high throughput capacity, less material contact with wear parts and even load on crusher frame and bearings. The challenge that an equipment supplier involved with high density crushing is how to design a robust cone crusher, which is able to cope with the high crushing forces due to high resistance from the crushed material against the gyration movement. Metso has launched a new series of cone crushers HP3, HP4 and HP5 that are all able to work in high density crushing applications The test results and evidence from over 300 installations clearly prove the effectiveness and importance of high density crushing. Annual production of more than 4,000,000 tons of 0.74 percent copper ore and coincident handling of over 5,000,000 tons of waste at the open-pit mine of Castle Dome Copper Co. near Miami, Ariz. takes a lot of power. Manufacturers have ever co-operated with mining companies in providing the required equipment to suit the problem. Power equipment suppliers have done much to make possible the economic and profitable production of copper from low-grade ores. In the future, as mining operations will necessarily handle even lower-grade ores, the ability of the manufacturer to supply the power and mechanical equipment to produce more metal at a fair and reasonable price will be the good right arm of the miner. About 27,000 tons of concentrate is produced from the 4,000,000 tons of ore.

"In natural world, some kinds of scheelite minerals are rich in molybdenum. Molybdenum exists in the crystal lattice of scheelite in the form of isomorphism, and the content of MoO3 varies from 2% to 10%. As a result, the flotability of seyrigite (scheelite with molybdenum) turns to be weaker. One seyrigite mine, which has been built for 3 years,still could not produce qualified seyrigite concentrate due to the weak flotability of seyrigite (Mo-bearing scheelite) in raw ore. In our experimental research, through adopting new seyrigite collector TA-3 and advanced mineral processing technology, the seyrigite concentrate with a grade of 65.62% WO3 at a recovery of 87.47% was obtained for the raw ore containing 0.19% WO3 and 0.074% Mo. By applying the new technical achievement, for the raw ore containing 0.272% WO3, the seyrigite concentrate assaying 68.03% WO3 with a recovery of 77.56% was obtained in industrial production.INTRODUCTIONIn natural world, some kinds of scheelite minerals are rich in molybdenum. Molybdenum exists in the crystal lattice of scheelite in the form of isomorphism, and the scheelite is changed to be seyrigite (Ca[(W,Mo)O4]) (Ma, Bian, & Wang, 2013). The content of MoO3 in seyrigite varies from 2% to 10% usually, the content of MoO3 in some of the seyrigite even reaches 34%. The flotability of seyrigite is weak (Zhang, 2007), and the seyrigite is difficult to be recovered by flotation with common collectors and regulators. One scheelite mine in Anhui China, which is a skarn type seyrigite mine, has not produced qualified concentrate yet since 3 years it has been built due to the limit of beneficiation technology. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on the collectors with high efficiency and developing advanced processing flow for this kind of ore."

Today there is a consensus that xanthate adsorption on sulfide minerals is primarily controlled by redox reactions occurring at specific potentials on these semi-conductive minerals. Consequently, it is possible to control xanthate adsorption by controlling electrochemical conditions in the system by using oxidizing and reducing agents. The scope of this study was to investigate the possibilities to increase the selectivity of Cu-Fe-Zn ore flotation by applying electrochemical control in the conditioning of the flotation feed. In this work, mild steel grinding in a nitrogen atmosphere was used as the basis to provide a negative starting potential and minimize the amount of oxidation products on sulfide mineral surfaces. To study how different potential levels affect flotation results, a controlled conditioning procedure was utilized maintaining potential at a desired level by titrating the pulp with air. Xanthate adsorption kinetics during conditioning was examined by taking pulp samples for spectrophotometric analysis and laboratory flotation tests were conducted for samples that underwent the controlled conditioning procedure in the potential range of -200mV to +200mV vs. SHE. A clear correlation was detected between chalcopyrite recovery and the potential during controlled conditioning indicating that there was a constant increase in chalcopyrite recovery when the potential was shifted to more anodic values. It is possible that utilizing potential control in the conditioning stage, a smelter grade copper concentrate can be achieved directly in rougher flotation without cleaning stages. Conditioning in favorable conditions had significant positive effects on flotation selectivity of chalcopyrite. The improvement in copper concentrate grade being predominantly caused by the depression of pyrite. By applying the controlled conditioning procedure pyrite recovery in rougher flotation was reduced even low as under 1%, while in the tests without controlled conditioning, pyrite recovery varied between 7.5 – 65.7%. The result of this work indicate that affecting collector adsorption by electrochemical control in the conditioning stage can provide significant improvement in sulfide mineral flotation and industrial applications could lead to decreased chemical consumption, reduced equipment and maintenance costs.

"With the purpose of increasing the extrudability of lean alloys, we reduce levels of the alloying elements Mg and Si in a 6xxx extrusion alloy. To avoid sacrificing strength, we investigate the compensating effect of smaller amounts of lithium and germanium, alone and in combination. Recent studies by atomically resolved high angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations have demonstrated that while Li replaces Mg, Ge substitutes Si in the columns in the hardening ß’’-phase. Several studies have shown that Ge replaces Si in other precipitates as well, and that both Li and Ge promote precipitation and can improve macroscopic properties, like strength and thermal stability. The scope of the current work has been to investigate and document the combined effect of the two alloying elements. Of the investigated alloys, the one containing both elements displayed highest hardness, corresponding with a significant increase in precipitate number density. We used HAADF-STEM to determine the extent of Li and Ge in the precipitate structures.INTRODUCTION The two most important alloying agents, with respect to age hardening of the 6xxx alloy series, are Mg and Si. In general, 6xxx alloys are formed into their final shapes by rolling or extrusion, before being age-hardened at elevated temperatures around 180°C. The hardening effect during this stage is due to the formation of metastable, semi-coherent, precipitate needles along the three < 001>Al directions generally following the precipitation sequence (Marioara, Nordmark, Andersen, & Holmestad, 2006): Supersaturated solid solution ? atomic clusters ? Regional Connector Transit Corridor (RCC) is part of the Los Angeles metro expansion project under construction which adds three new stations into the system. PB&A was responsible for the design of the support of excavation (SOE) systems for two stations, 2nd/Broadway and 2nd/Hope, in RCC. In this paper, challenges and lesson learned from SOE design of 2nd/Broadway station with a main focus on underpinning design are discussed. 2nd/Broadway station required to cut and cover excavation of 500 ft long by almost 100 ft deep, underneath 2nd Street. SOE systems consisting of drilled soldier beams with tiebacks and/or struts. The main challenge in 2nd/Broadway station was to underpin the LA Times building which was partially protruded into the station. A chellenging underpinning system consisted of concrete panels and ground anchors was designed to support the building surcharge and prevent settlement. The underpinning system was designed based on METRO design criteria and the deflection was evaluated by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) program, PLAXIS 2D. A maximum deflection of 0.4 inches was calculated to occur at the top of the underpinning system. Data from settlement and tilt sensors showed minimal movements which aligned with PLAXIS outputs. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Regional Connector Transit Corridor (RCC) is Los Angeles Metro’s ambitious Light Rail Project. It runs under the City’s main thoroughfares, Flower and 2nd Streets, and when complete will alleviate traffic and parking congestion in downtown Los Angeles. The Regional Connector will connect thousands of residents living in the bedroom communities of the Inland Empire and Long Beach to their jobs Downtown. The rail line will serve 1.9 miles, using the $1.756 Billion budget to construct the underground rail line, including 3 new stations, at 2nd & Hope Street, 2nd & Broadway, and 1st St. & Central Ave (Fig. 1).

"The control of inclusion elimination is getting more and more important to obtain clean steel. This paper presents a methodology under development for predicting cluster growth and elimination in ladle - RH system. The first key point is to express the collision efficiency, which is very specific for alumina cluster due to the non-wetting fluid. Second, a description of the two-phase flow in the system is necessary. In our calculations with Fluent CFD package and Lagrangian approach for bubbles, bubble growth is implemented, which improves the predictions. Using global reactor decomposition makes possible the prediction of the time evolution of cluster distribution. Important effect of fractal dimension is demonstrated.IntroductionElaboration of new steel grades requires not only to have a high purity in terms of C, O and N content but also to eliminate particles such as alumina or slag droplets. Flow optimisation making easier inclusion elimination is then a key figure to satisfy cleanliness requirements. Mathematical models of flow and inclusion behaviour are widely used for this purpose (1, 2). But having a predictive tool is still a challenge, because the number of phases is important in steelmaking industry: liquid steel, slag layer, bubbles and inclusions (with a large range of composition and rheology). The paper presents the methodology which is developed at IRSID to predict oxygen content evolution during RH degassing.The main mechanisms which have to be considered are :-inclusion growth by turbulent aggregation of elementary inclusions (keeping in mind that liquid steel is a non-wetting medium for inclusions); the difficulty is to express collision efficiency for alumina particles,-inclusion removal by flotation; the difficulty for alumina clusters stems from the complex morphology of particle; fortunately, the use of fractal concept makes it possible to cope with this problem.The paper describes the general modelling of inclusion removal taking into account the previous mechanisms. Hydrodynamic parameters are obtained by means of Fluent CFD package and a specific coding is developed for cluster growth."

"Hematite concentrates are characterized by bad high-temperature reactivity and poor balling index, which restrict their large-scale application in the production of oxidized pellets. An organic additive, namely MHA, was authorized and used as binder recently in China. Compared with bentonite, the effects of MHA on compressive strength of hematite pellets at various firing conditions were investigated in this study. Experimental results showed the compressive strengths of preheated pellets with different binders were increased with increasing the preheating temperature and time. The compressive strength of preheated pellets with MHA binder was lower than that of pellets with bentonite, which can be ascribed to the high porosity of pellets with MHA binder. However, the compressive strength of roasted pellets with MHA binder was higher than that of pellets with bentonite. The compressive strength of finished pellets balled with MHA binder 1.0 wt% could meet the operation requirements of grate-kiln process.IntroductionHematite concentrates are characterized by bad high-temperature reactivity and poor balling index, which can lead to the appearance of those problems with increasing the energy consumption, shortening the useful life of equipment, and finally increasing the operation cost of oxidized pellets plants [1-2]. Some investigations have been conducted based on improving the pelletizing technique of hematite concentrates, such as pretreatment of raw materials [3-7], optimization of ore proportioning [8], addition of solid fuels [9-16], and so on. Employing high pressure grinding roller for the treatment of hematite concentrates revealed that the mechanical strength of wet green pellets could be improved. However, the mechanical strength of fired pellets was not improved obviously [7]. Huang, et al., pointed out that the preheating and roasting temperature may be decreased and the compressive strength of fired pellets could be increased by blending a certain proportion of magnetite concentrates with hematite [8]. Nevertheless, there are a variety of magnetite ores different in physical and chemical properties in China, resulting in the instability operation [17]."

So much so that contractors now operate 33 of the 68 underground metalliferous mines around Australia and are making significant inroads into iron ore in the west and coal in the east. Safety used to be a low priority for many contractors. The picture has changed dramatically in recent years as most contractors take a far more professional approach to safety management. This paper examines the changes that have occurred and the requirements for effectively managing safety in a contracting environment.

"Global economic development has drastically increased energy consumption in various fields, and CO2 emissions, which are a prime cause of global warming, have continued to increase. Therefore, measures for reduction of the load on the environment have been taken in various areas. Energy improvements of various types of work vessels used for offshore construction might be expected to greatly reduce consumption of fossil fuel, because many of these vessels are larger than land construction machinery and consume large amounts of fuel, which will lead to effective use of resources and alleviation of the load on the environment. However, such efforts are unusual because renewal or newbuilding of work vessels is rare. We developed a work-vessel hybrid energy system based on fuel-saving technology and use of natural energy to promote reduction of CO2 emissions for a large deep mixing barge in 2010. We developed an Automated Generator Start-Stop System, which automatically controls the number of active generators according to power demand during ground-improving work of the deep mixing barge in 2012, thus further improving the work-vessel hybrid energy system. These systems are introduced here.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, CO2 emission, which is one of the factors of the Global Warming has been increasing. According to the report by National Institute for the Environmental Studies in Japan (2014), CO2 emission in Japan has amounted to 1,276 million tons. The industrial sector in the total emission becomes 500 million tons that is equivalent to 39%. Meanwhile, the offshore Deep Mixing Method requires work vessels mounted with a large power plant (Fig. 1). In sea ground boring, very large load acts on the deep mixing machine, and the large power is required, which results in the increase in CO2 emission. To achieve eco-friendly marine construction, the work-vessel hybrid energy system was developed. Table 1 shows specifications of the deep mixing barge with the work-vessel hybrid energy system."

The goal is a significant discovery before the mid-l990s and the company is confident that this target will be achieved.IntroductionAs one of Canada&apos;s oldest continuously operating mining companies, Teck Corporation traces its roots to Kirkland Lake, Ontario, with the development of the Teck-Hughes gold mine in 1913, later supplemented by production from the Lamaque gold mine in Val d&apos;Or, Quebec. Control of the company was acquired by Temagami Mining Company, part of the Keevil Mining Group, in 1959. Credited as one of the first discoveries made using airborne geophysics, the Keevil Group had recently found the small but very high-grade copper deposits at Temagami, Ontario. These developments in eastern Canada formed a foundation for remarkable growth and Teck&apos;s present status as one of Canada&apos;s most successful and respected mining companies.Teck currently operates successful mining ventures across Canada and has international exposure through its association with Cominco Ltd., M.I.M. Holdings Limited and Metallgesellschaft AG. Operations in eastern Canada, however, remain an important component of Teck&apos;s ongoing success. "High-performance nickel-based nanocrystalline zinc oxide adsorbents have been prepared adjusting Ni/Zn mol ratio of 1 :5 by thermal decomposition, coprecipitation and sol-gel method for selective adsorption of thiophene in liquid hydrocarbon fuels at ambient temperature and pressure. To understand the nature of reactive adsorption of thiophene (C4H4S) on Ni/ZnO, the effect of preparation techniques, morphological and textural structure on the desulfurization activity was investigated. A model fuel (20 mL) consisting of pentane (C5H12) and thiophene was prepared and adsorption experiments were performed by a batch method under ambient conditions. The physicochemical behaviors of the fresh adsorbents were obtained using X-ray diffraction (XRD) with EDAX, scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The sulfur concentration in the mixture was monitored by UV-vis spectrophotometry. The adsorption reaction confirmed that ZnO played a crucial role in taking up S element to convert it into ZnS. The deposition of nickel on ZnO is an innovative approach which takes advantage of the selectivity of Ni towards S-species and the high adsorptive capacity of ZnO support.IntroductionLow temperature deep desulfurization of fuels via selective adsorption of sulfur compounds keeping coexisting aromatic hydrocarbons and olefins intact is receiving increasing attention in the research community worldwide in order to satisfy the upcoming environmental regulations and fuel specifications. The sulfur compounds in the transportation fuels is a matter of concern when global crude oil slate is becoming heavier and sourer and environmental restrictions on both the refining process and the refined products are becoming more stringent. According to the current refinery technologies, the sulfur content in refinery fuel is typically around 300-500 ppm by weight (ppmw) [1-3]. Starting in 2006, sulfur limits in highway diesel and gasoline were set to 15 ppm and 30 ppm, respectively. During combustion sulfur in the fuel are converted to toxic sulfur oxide (SOx) and contributes to air pollution and acid rains [ 4]."

The Monsanto Company&apos;s Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto&apos;s three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. Brazil and Colombia have large reserves of coal, those reserves in Brazil are located predominantly in the south and Colombia the main reserves are located in the north. Despite the relative ease of exploitation, these resources have been underestimated as a source of energy. Currently, these countries are developing projects and partnerships aiming to qualify this mineral resource, adding quality to the final product of the processing plants. In this scenario the processing of Brazilian and Colombian coal in flotation columns appears as a promising alternative, having been successful in mineral systems containing fine particles This paper aims to study the overall process of column flotation for a specific Brazilian coal and a specific Colombian coal. The material used in this study consists of fine coal from Brazil (Copelmi) and Colombia (Cerrejon). The objective is to recover carbonaceous matter and reduce the ash and contaminants grade. The two coals were floated using a negative bias in a 5 cm diameter conventional flotation column of 5 m high. Flotation parameter investigated included air velocity in the range 0.6 to 1.5 cm/s. For all runs, a constant negative bias of -0.25 cm/s and a pulp concentration of 8% w/w were used. For Cerrejón coal, 300 g/ton of frother and 907 g/ton of collector was used, whereas for Copelmi coal, 600 g/ton of frother and 1815 g/ton of collector was employed. The frother was a commercial Aerofroth 65 (AF65), whereas the collector was Kerosene. For the Colombian coal, in general, yield, organic recovery, ash recovery and water recovery decreased with the increasing air rate. However, for Brazilian coal the air rate had no significant effect. For Colombian coal, the highest yield (60% w/w) and organic recovery (69% w/w) were obtained at the lowest air rate (0,6 cm/s). "Printed circuit boards (PCB) are particularly problematic to recycle because of the heterogeneous mix of organic materials, metals, and glass fiber. PCBs are found in almost every electroelectronic equipment and their recycling process involves a pre-treatment to separate the products which contain targeted metals. In this work, a physical processing involving sequential shredding and hanuner milling were used to obtain a comminuted sample from scrap printers PCBs. The thus prepared sample was analyzed for particle size distribution and by optical microscopy as well was subjected to pyrolysis, leachabilty and chemical composition determination by XRF. The metals concentration was determined by ICP and AAS. The PCBs have been also analyzed by SEM-EDS (micro-analysis and X-ray mapping). The results show that the studied PCBs are lead free, multilayer with 4 copper layers, have 45% of metals and the copper is present in significantly higher concentration than the rest of the metals.IntroductionThe global generation of e-waste (electrical and electronic equipment waste - WEEEs) grows at a rate of about 40 millions of tons per year [ l].Among this e-waste there are PCBs that are present in almost all electronic equipment. Their composition is heterogeneous and varies according to several factors, including: kind of EEE, when and where it was produced, fabrication technology [2], etc. In printers, the PCBs represent about 6.6- 8 wt.% [3].The PCBs treatment may include physical, pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, ectrometallurgical and more recently bio-hydrometallurgical process. Normally there is a combination between these processes [2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10].The diversity between the different PCBs composition complicates the recycling process since the composition of metal and others materials can vary according to the models. So characterization is an indispensable step before any processing of PCB to begin. Owing to the above said, the main goal of this work has been set to characterize representative samples of PCBs from printers through physical, chemical and microstructural analyses."

"Pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field have been applied to the bainite transformation of Cr5 steel. Three groups of experiments were conducted. In the first group, ordinary resistance furnace was used for heat treatment. The Cr5 specimens were rapidly heated up to austenitization temperature 940 °C, held for 20 min, air cooled to bainite transformation temperature 350 °C, held for 10, 20, or 40 min and then air cooled to room temperature. The second and the third group shared the same temperature-time curve with that of the first group, but their heat resources came from the Joule heat produced by pulsed current. 1.5 T pulsed magnetic field was exerted on the third group specimens when they were held at 350 °C, but the second group specimens did not undergo the treatment of magnetic field. It was found that both pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field obviously retarded the bainite transformation. The phenomena were discussed in terms ofliterature results.IntroductionApplying pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field technology are very pronnsmg ways to change the microstructure of materials by affecting the phase transformation process. People had found that pulsed current dramatically influences the behaviors of materials, for example, electromigration effect [l], the solidification of metals and alloys [2, 3], electroplasticity [4, 5], crystallization of amorphous alloys [6], healing of metal materials [7] and so on. As to pulsed magnetic field technology, a lot of effort had been spent on grain refinement in solidification of metals [8, 9], recrystallization of cold-worked metals and alloys [10] and Fe-based alloys solid-state phase transformation [11, 12]. Though application of pulsed current and pulsed magnetic field technology have proliferated in recent years, investigation on their effects on solid/solid phase transformation, especially bainite transformation, is lacking. This paper presents results from model and full-scale tests to assess the interface bond between a cast-in-place concrete seal slab and steel H-piles in cofferdams. Three different seal slab placement conditions - fresh water, salt water and bentonite slurry - were evaluated and the results compared against controls where no fluid was displaced by the concrete. Normal pile surfaces were investigated. Additionally, the situation of ?soil caked? piles was also tested. In the model tests, eight 15 cm deep, W6 x 15 sections were used for two different embedment depths of 1.5d and 2d, d being the depth of the section. In the full-scale tests, 16 specimens 35 cm deep (W14 x 90 sections) were tested with the embedment varied between 0.5d-2d. The results show that significant bond stresses developed even in the worst placement condition. Recommendations made for revising current values in specifications have already been implemented by the Florida Department of Transportation.
