To determine the effect of F ions in the molten alkali silicate systems on their structures, quenched Na2O-SiO2-NaF systems were investigated by Raman spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulation. The systematic increase of 1100 cm-1band intensity in the Raman spectra of the silicate melts accompanying the replacement of F for O provides the evidence for concomitant polymerization of melts. From the molecular dynamics simulation, it was confirmed that most of substituted F was mainly coordinated to Na+ ions but not Si4+ions. These results were consistent with the mechanism in which F associated with otherwise network-modifying Na rather than with network-forming Si. Since F was associated to Na+ ions, the replace of O ion by two F ions promote the polymerization of silicate melts. In the annual report under the Explosives Act for 1905, H.M.inspectors state that over 90 percent of the accidents causing death or personal injury occurred in the use of explosives and under miscellaneous conditions to which the controlling provisions of the Act do not apply, and that such accidents caused 43 out of the 50 deaths, and 312 out of 348 cases of injury. The number of accidents grouped under the heading of “Use and Miscellaneous” is less than that for 1904 - viz., 281 against 301. By these accidents 43 persons were killed and 312 injured, as compared with 39 killed and 343 injured in 1904

Industrial process water for the Commodore Coal Mine and the adjoining Millmerran Power Station is provided by pumping secondary treated sewage effluent 100 km from the Wetalla Sewage Treatment Plant near Toowoomba. (A separate source is used for potable water.) The effluent is not of sufficient quality for discharge to a watercourse, but it is suitable, with further treatment, for the mine and power station. In designing and constructing the pipeline, special emphasis was placed on preventing accidental spills or planned releases to the environment. The pipeline and associated works can transfer 1000 ML/annum for reuse in the coal mine and power station.

Of these, 11 were in the industrialized world, 13 in the Third World. By 1985, the number had dramatically surged to a world-wide total of 145, with the greatest growth among the developing countries to 110, an increase of almost 1000%.

The authors consider the features and advantages of a new promising trend in mineral processing - column flotation. Design aerohydrodynamic and process characteristics of pilot-scale columns are studied. Optimum process parameters for various ores and operations are studied. Flow patterns in cells of various cross-sections are investigated and the relationship between Peclet criterion and specific capacity of cell is determined. On this basis options were developed for optimisation of hydrodynamic characteristics of large capacity cells, including longitudinal sectionalising of the collection zone. It is shown that advantages of high column cells (10 - 13 m) produced in the West can be implemented in a sectionalised machine of smaller height (5 - 6 m). Investigations on the influence of slurry and air bubbles flow patterns indicated that to increase flotation rate of particles of various flotabilities it is expedient to combine co- and counter-current flows of phases in a single column. The proposed designs allow tailings to repeatedly return tailings to the collection zone and alternate co- and counter-current slurry and air flows. For the first time columns with alternating slurry flows (combination of co- and counter-current flows) are developed and commercialised. Unique multi-sectional cells having a number of essential advantages compared to monocells are developed. Design features of the cell allow: implementation of different flotation process flowsheets in a single unit, improved beneficiation process results, reduced specific power requirement, and elimination of sludging of the aerator and cell bottom part. Operational problems restricting introduction of column cells are connected with the aeration unit. The new cells are supplied with pneumohydraulic and stepped airlift spargers, allowing control of bubble size distribution with a service life of not less than three years. Successful operation of the new generation of columns with cell volumes of 15, 25, 40, and 80 cu m and the height of 5 - 6 m in copper, molybdenum, antimony, tungsten and nickel ores and coal slurry processing at different plants in this country illustrated their considerable process and operational advantages and verified the proposed options and relationships. A simulation technique of the flotation process and models for the solution of various problems are developed. A modular model of column flotation is constructed taking into account the kinetic relationship of the process and the hydrodynamic regime in the cell. Based on this, a technique of calculating the column parameters based on laboratory tests is developed (scaling-up), and applied for calculating the design of commercial-scale columns is developed.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes and evaluates a Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) based end-use data system for minerals that is designed to link the demand for minerals to economic activity in commercial uses. The new data system is two-dimensional. The first dimension of technical product classes (TPC's) measures the consumption of minerals in major primary intermediate products. The second dimension measures the consumption of these TPC's in SIC end-use sectors in sufficient detail to identify the major determinants of demand for each TPC. Intercomodity comparisons are achieved at the level of SIC two-digit major groups. The methodology was developed so that all available sources of information from Government and industry can be utilized at minimum cost. This information will be supplemented with additional data to be obtained by modifying existing Bureau of Mines canvasses so as to elicit additional quantitative responses from mineral producers. The new data system is expected to improve significantly the ability to forecast demand for minerals, and provide an information base that would, for the first time ever, permit resolution of such questions as trends in substitution among materials and the intensity-of-use of materials in end-use sectors. For the 42 TPC?s identified in the report, data are available for the new system from current sources or, except for three TPC?s that require new canvasses, can be obtained by modification of existing Bureau canvasses.

Western Coalfield?s Tandsi Mine, has difficult support conditions and a history of roof falls, resulting in mining roadway widths and depths being restricted for safety reasons. Rock Mechanics Technology Ltd was contracted to improve the support system to allow the introduction of mechanised room and pillar mining. The introduction of a ?world best practice? bolting system resulted in major improvement in roof stability, allowing mining restrictions to be lifted and Tandsi to become one of the first two Indian mines to introduce a mechanised continuous miner system. The first year?s production was some six times previous levels. Because of the improvement in the support system, RMT was also able to design a partial de-pillaring system suitable for the Tandsi continuous miner districts together with the introduction of monitoring procedures and guidelines to maintain safe roof support conditions. In situ monitoring of pillar and roof behaviour was undertaken as the first pillars were extracted to confirm the design. De-pillaring operations have also proved highly productive, and to date there has been no associated support related major injury or dangerous occurrence. The success of this project demonstrates the potential for mechanised room and pillar mining in India.

Islais Creek Contract E, a transport/storage tunnel in San Francisco, was visited on a fieldtrip during construction by delegates to the 1995 RETC. This paper is a follow-up to that fieldtrip. The project’s two tunnels are 3.7 m and 3.2 m finished diameter, 155 m and 77 m long, respectively. The contractor used 1,000 overlapping jet grout columns to pre-treat the weak Bay Mud along the tunnel alignments, then mined them with an open faced tunnel shield, eliminating the need for compressed air tunneling. This paper documents the jet grouting program and the tunneling operation used on the project.

A technical and economic study was made of the feasibility of establishing an underground hydraulic coal mine in the Wilkeson-Carbonado coal field approximately 25 miles southeast of Tacoma, Washington. The deposit contains reserves of more than 200 million tons of generally high quality metallurgical coal. It is located in nine seams of minable thickness in a complex, folded and tectonically disturbed set of anticlines and synclines. Typical dip angles are up to 60°, with minable seam thicknesses of 6 to 17 feet. A mine plan was made for a 2 million TPY mine (clean) using two shafts to access the deposit to a depth of 2500 ft. The mining method uses monitor jets to break coal by sublevel retreat mining, fluming to a sump and pumping the minus 0.25 inch coal to the surface and to a preparation plant. The plus 0.25 inch coal is hoisted by skip. Cleaned met coal would be shipped by rail for export. A middlings product would be sold as thermal coal. Assuming a coal price of $48 per short ton (FOB the mine) for the met coal and $35 for the middlings, the return on investment is estimated at 20% after taxes. The many uncertainties about the geological conditions and the specific mine design parameters make the economic analysis and conclusions somewhat tentative. A second mine could also be developed in the eastern section of the reserves to produce 1 million TPY of clean coal and is expected to have similar economics. Recommendations are made for a Test Mine and a Pilot Mine leading to a production mine.

"In this study, an investigation on the microstructure of hot rolled steel S355J2+N was conducted to optimize process parameters of complex forming, which combines rolling and bending. The best sets of parameters are worked out based on homogeneous mechanical properties and microstructure within the varied deformation degree with maximum at <p = 1.14 on a 25 mm thick plates. Mechanical properties, especially of heavy plates, are strongly influenced by the local deformation degree, strain rate and temperature. Detailed microstructural analyses showed that the ferrite-pearlite band structure changes near the surface, while maintaining homogeneous microstructure within the deformed work piece. Surface decarburization was also observed and this leads to decrease in hardness. To minimize iron oxide formation which could lead to side cracking, reduction in exposure time to temperature was suggested. On the other hand, temperature reduction below a critical value would risk the accurate forming process.IntroductionThis work presents the preliminary results of research to develop a new complex deformation process of thick steel plates. Complexity is given because the forming process combines rolling to reduce thickness and profiling by bending. The work piece will experience a thickness reduction from 25mm to 8 mm and is double curved. To explain and understand forming of thick plates basics of sheet forming as well as massive forming need to be used. At the moment there is no forming process established to produce double curved plates including reducing thickness in one process step. Technologies nowadays consist of two process steps: flat rolling and pressing in shape. Due to good weldability and formability the final product will be made of steel S355J2+N. This low-carbon steel is well understood and has a low strengthening exponent, which is expected to keep the forming forces down. Reduction of thickness from 25 mm to 8 mm gives furthermore a high deformation degree. Thus, hot forming has to be applied. The determination of process parameters is the main aim of overall research project; temperatures above lOOO°C are expected. Flow curves in literature are given at various temperatures and strain rates [1]. However, experiments with data close to the industrial application are rarely found, especially at low strain rates and high deformation degrees. Pre-test were done by flat rolling, being aware that the influence of bending is eliminated. The microstructure evolution were characterised in relationship to material formability with special attention to grain size change and recrystallization. Representative samples should be selected from specific locations in the deformation zone according to the knowledge about the metal forming process [2]. Due to no further alloying elements in S355, no precipitation hardening is expected to take place during hot forming, which keeps the mechanisms simple and the concentration on the feasibility of the complex forming process is given."

Prospecting Geophysical work in Mississippi during 1943 amounted to 1127 crew weeks, divided as follows: reflection seismograph, 809 weeks; gravity meter, 285; magnotometer, 30; torsion balance, 3. A considerable amount of core drilling was done over a large part of the state. The complete data on this activity are not available at the present time. Salt Domes To date, the following salt domes have been discovered in Mississippi: Midway, Edwards, Glass, Newman, Tatum, Oak-vale, Kings, Halifax, D&apos;Lo, Hazlehurst, Byrd, Leedo, Prentiss, Carson, Moselle, Monticello, Ruth, Keno, Taylorsville. New Oil Fields Lincoln County.—On March 10, 1943, the California Company completed its Smith No. I in sec. 4, T. 7 N., R. 7 E., Lincoln County, as an oil well and produced 29 bbl. of 25" gravity oil in 24 hr. through a fi-in. choke. Two outpost wells have been drilled in this area by the California Company, and both have been abandoned as dry holes. Madison County. —Love Petroleum Co. completed its J. R. Anderson No. 2, sec. 2, T. 8 N., R. I W., Madison County, on Sept. 7, 1943. This well produced 135 bbl. of approximately 30" gravity- oil in 24 hr. through a )/4-in. choke. The production comes from a sand or porosity in the upper part of the Chalk formation of the Cretaceous age. Adams County.—The California Company drilled its National Gasoline Co. of Louisiana No. I in sec. 52, T. 7 N., R. I W., to a total depth of 10,383 ft., and at 10,280 ft, it perforated and obtained gas and a condensate. The well had several showings in the Wilcox of the Eocene age. Several of these showings were tested and the well finally was completed at 5888 ft. on Oct. 6, 1943, producing 44" gravity oil in the second sand in this formation. No other wells were completed in this field during the year. However, a number of wells are contemplated in the near future, and locations have been staked by the California Company. The Oklahoma Pipe Line Co. will market the oil through its pipe-line facilities. Wayne County.—The Gulf Refining Co. drilled Davis No. I in sec. 2, T. 9 N., R. 9 W. in Wayne County. After several stem tests 545&apos;-in. casing was set at 6850 ft. and production was obtained in the so-called Massive Sand of the Lower Tuscaloosa. The well produced 359 bbl. of oil in 24 hr., and it Was completed on Oct. 4, 1943. Other locations have been staked ill this area and probably will be drilled in 1944 by

The Candelaria deposit was first discovered by Spanish prospectors in 1863; but its silver ore was not exploited on a large scale until 1873, when the Northern Belle mine was opened. The first Northern Belle mill was built at Belleville, 13 km (8 miles) to the northwest. From 1876 to 1886 the Northern Belle paid over $1 million in dividends each year. In 1882 a 43 km (27 miles) pipeline was built to Candelaria from the White Mountains to the west to furnish water for the mills and town at Candelaria; it was 100 mm (4 in.) in diameter, hand- riveted, and made in England. Sections of this pipe are used. as claim posts today. At its terminus at Metallic City, above Candelaria, a large concrete reservoir was built and called Metallic Lake. It is being used today by Candelaria Partners. Production at Candelaria declined after the mid-1980s, revived for a short period in the early 1890s, and during the 1920s a 300 ton mill operated for three years. Candelaria Partners is owned jointly by Occidental Minerals and Congdon and Carey, with Occidental being the operator. An engineering study done in mid-1979 resulted in engineering for the plant commencing in late that year and heap leaching being started in September 1980. Two million tons of ore per year containing 108 g Ag and 0.28 g Au per mt (3.15 oz Ag and 0.008 oz Au per st) will be mined from the Lucky Hill and Mount Diablo .areas about 1.6 km (1 mile) up Pickhandle gulch from the heap leaching operation. Waste -to -ore ratio is about 2:l. Ore is mined by front-end loaders and hauled by 85 ton trucks to the primary crusher, a 1,070 by 1,780 mm (42 by 70 in. ) gyratory. Primary crushed ore is conveyed to a stockpile of 10,000 tons live capacity from which it is reclaimed by hydraulic reciprocating feeders and conveyed to the crushing and agglomeration facility. This unit is composed of a 1.8 m by 2.6. m (6 ft by 12 ft) double deck screen, a 2.1 m (7 ft) standard cone crusher, and three conveyors. At the conveyor transfer points NaOH and NaCN solution is sprayed on the ore as it falls through a row of 75 mm (3 in.) hanging steel bars. During this process of turning and dividing the ore, the fines agglomerate with the coarse ore to give better percolation for the leach solution on the heaps. Provision was made for the later addition of 2 kg per mt (4 lb per st) of cement to aid in the agglomeration. Agglomerated ore at minus 50 mm (2 in.) size is then conveyed to a 390 mt (430 st) loadout bin where it is transferred to 85 ton rear dump trucks for haulage to the leach pads.

REAGENT control in flotation is more an art than a science. Operators vary the amount of reagents used according to the metallurgy obtained. The amount of collector may be increased, for example, if tailings losses are high and decreased if concentrate grades are low. Often control decisions are based on only one assay, such as the tailings analysis by microscopic or quick assaying techniques. This method of control has given reasonably satisfactory results but is clearly far from perfect. No adjustment in reagent addition can be made until information is received that metallurgy has deteriorated, that is, until the optimum time for adjustment has already passed. The first adjustment probably will be an overcorrection or an undercor-rection, and time will be required to establish the best new addition rates. The seriousness of the problem depends on variability of the ore. In ore of continually shifting composition and complexity, mill results will shift back and forth from excessively high concentrate grades and high tailings losses to excessively low concentrate grades and low tailings losses. Economic incentive for improved control also increases with increasing size of mill. Even a small improvement in percentage recovery in a large mill pays for expensive control equipment. The Sullivan concentrator of The Consolidated Mining & Smelting Co. of Canada Ltd. at Kimberley, B. C., treats 11,000 tpd of complex lead-zinc ore, a scale of operations which justifies an extensive research program on automatic control. Work has followed two separate lines: 1) development of faster analytical methods for pulps, and 2) study of metallurgical control by measurement and control of reagent concentrations in flotation solutions. Although work is incomplete in both phases, a progress report can be given on the development of reagent control. The primary requirement in flotation is selective attachment of particles of one mineral to air bubbles while the other minerals remain detached. Hydrophobicity of mineral surfaces is established by the collector, which coats the minerals by adsorption. The requirement of selective affinity for air bubbles is therefore equivalent to requiring selective adsorption of a collector. Adsorption theory, supported by abundant experimental evidence, shows that the amount of a reagent adsorbed at a surface must be a function of its residual concentration in solution. As the concentration in solution rises, the amount adsorbed increases, usually following some type of logarithmic curve. Selective adsorption must depend on a natural difference in the minerals, but ordinarily the differences in affinity are not great enough to obtain complete coverage of one mineral while the others are completely uncoated. An optimum concentration will exist, below which coverage will not be great enough to float enough of the valuable mineral, and above which too much unwanted mineral will float. The Pueblo Viejo Mine, a 7, 250 mtpd (8,000 stpd) gold-silver cyanidation plant built by Rosario Dominicana S. A., was described in Volume I of this monograph. At the time of writing that volume, Pueblo Viejo had not yet gone on-stream and operating data or costs could not be presented. Since that time this information has been obtained and several interesting modifications and an expansion have been made to the plant. Because Pueblo Viejo is the largest open-pit gold mine in the world and one of the world&apos;s leading gold-silver operations with production of approximately 31 kg (1,000 oz) gold and 125 to 155 kg (4,000 to 5, 000 oz) silver per day, the authors have updated the previous data and flow sheet. The Dominican Government, which held a 4670 interest in Rosario Dominicana S. A., completed purchase of the mine to gain full control in 1979. Rosario Resources will continue to manage the mine, at least until the end of 1980. Gold was produced at Pueblo Viejo almost 500 years ago with initial production in the year 1505. Rosario Resources became interested in the property in 1969 and found surface oxidation had rendered the upper portion of the ore body amenable to direct cyanide treatment. The treatment of the underlying gold-bearing sulfide zone is still undergoing metallurgical studies. The ore is considered to be a laterite; and because there appeared to be few boulders in the ore zone, only a 400 m (16 in. ) square grizzly was initially installed ahead of the mills when the plant went on-stream in late 1974 at a design capacity of 7,250 mtpd (8,000 stpd). Operation also proved the ore to be harder than was originally anticipated. During 1967 a 1. 25 m by 1. 5 m (48 in. by 60 in. ) jaw crusher was installed to -feed the 1, 000 mt (1, 100 st) mill bin. Minus 200 mm (8 in.) crushed ore is fed directly to two 5.5 m by 1. 8 m (18 ft by 6 ft) semi-autogenous mills re-powered with 750 km (1,000 hp) motors and 50 mm (2 in.) grates. Each mill product is screened at 13 mm (1 /2 in.) by a vibrating screen. Screen oversize from each mill is combined on a single return belt equipped with a magnetic head pulley for grinding ball removal. The non-magnetic oversize is then split into two fractions for return to the primary mills. Originally, a minus 6 mm (1/4 in ) product was made on each screen and fed to a 300 kw (400 hp) 2.6 m by 3. 7 m (8-1/2 ft by 12 ft) regrind mill. The influence of up to 2 at. pct of Ni and Pt on the yield strength of mono- and polycrystalline high-purity iron has been evaluated at temperatures from + 25° to -196°C. Current theories of solid -solution strengthening fail to explain the experimental observations. The temperature dependence of yield stress was found to be less in the alloys than that in high-purity iron. The room-temperature yield stress increased with alloy content, but at —78°C the yield strength first decreased with increasing a1loy content. AS a result of many studies, a number of theories have been proposed for solid-solution strengthening. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate these theories, as applied to the solid-solution strengthening observed in Fe-Ni and Fe-Pt alloys. Of various theories of solid-solution strengthening, those of Cottrell,1,2 Fisher,3 Suzuki,4 and Mott and Nabarro5 are most prominent, and have been discussed widely in the literature.&apos;-&apos; Of the recent concepts of solid-solution hardening the work of Fleischer9 is notable. Each of these models has been applied to particular alloy systems with some success, but in general none has proved generally applicable. In many of the previous studies to assess the effects of alloy additions in ferrous systems, lack of adequate control of the purity and grain size of the materials has obscured strengthening effects, so that few comprehensive data relating composition, temperature, and change of lattice parameter have been determined. In the present investigation an attempt was made to obtain data which would be meaningful in evaluating the theories of strengthening. Materials of high purity were used to minimize extraneous impurity effects, and both single crystals and polycrystalline materials were studied to evaluate the effect of grain boundaries. Nickel and platinum were chosen as alloy additions, because both belong to the same chemical group and have the same crystal structure and valence, with markedly different atomic diameters. It appeared that some conclusions regarding atomic size effect on strengthening might be made. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES Fe-Ni and Fe-Pt alloys containing 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 at. pct alloy additions were prepared from high-purity materials. The iron was supplied by the American Iron and Steel Institute from a stock of 99.98 pct zone-refined iron prepared by Battelle Memorial Institute. The minimum purity of the nickel and platinum used for alloying was 99.98 and 99.999 pct, respectively. Alloys were prepared by levitation melting, cast into cylindrical copper molds, and cooled, all under a partial pressure (0.3 atm) of purified helium. Samples were 0.375 in. in diameter and weighed 20 to 25 g. Chemical analyses of the alloys are given in Table I. A sample of unalloyed iron also was cast as a control specimen.

BETTER understanding of solid surfaces and their associated adsorption products is of both academic and practical value. The study of detergents and their behavior in cleaning surfaces is fundamentally related to the nature of the products adsorbed and their ability to compete for certain surfaces. Similarly in flotation, the nature of the adsorbate before and after adsorption is basic to clear understanding of the process. The recently developed pellet technique1,2 employing infrared spectroscopy provides a powerful tool for the study of solid surfaces. Absorption bands, which are infrared-active, may be observed for adsorbed products. Also any changes in the surface substrate that occur as a result of adsorption may be detected by means of differential spectra. In applying the pellet technique to solids of large surface area, French and his coworkers3 have surveyed the adsorption of organic flocculants on clay minerals, oleic acid on fluorite, and ammonia on cracking catalysts. Recent work on application of differential infrared spectroscopy to the study of solid surfaces&apos; has demonstrated that the difference between a sample and a reference can be obtained with double-beam instrumentation. In this way displacement of surface products, adsorption of new products, and differences in the substrate, if any, may be detected. Experimental Procedure: Potassium iodide pellets were used in this study, prepared from recrystallized analytical reagent grade KI. Grinding was carried out in a Fisher mechanical agate mortar. Two-gram plates containing the solid under study were pressed in a special evacuated die constructed in the laboratory at the University of Utah." Concentration depended on the solid in question. Zinc sulfide and willemite are sufficiently transpar- ent in the infrared region for concentrations as high as 20 mg of mineral in 2g of KI to be used. Zinc oxide is even more transparent, permitting concentrations as high as 60 mg in a 2-g plate. For non-differential operation, however, much lower concentrations (2 to 10mg/2g KI) had to be used. Spectra were obtained on a Per kin-Elmer 21 double-beam recording infrared spectrophotometer. A sodium chloride prism was used giving a spectral range of approximately 2 to 15 v wave length. For differential runs a resolution of 1000 was used and the scanning speed was controlled commensurate with instrument response. The response was checked continuously and each spectrum was repeated several times. For nondifferential runs a resolution of 927 was used. Zinc oxide used was analytical grade oxide fume. The zinc sulfide was precipitated from solution with analytical grade zinc sulfate and sodium sulfide. The precipitate was washed and centrifuged several times and dried. Before use the precipitate was washed in dilute HCl and then treated with saturated NH4Cl to remove any bulk oxides and sulfates. X-ray patterns of the precipitate were comparable to that of the natural mineral sphalerite. IN the writer&apos;s opinion the term "block caving" has been rather loosely applied to a general principle of mining, and therefore detailed classification of caving methods and draw, together with the characteristics required for each method, will fill a desired need. Selection of caving method should be made only after a study of all governing conditions, such as size of orebody, lateral and vertical extent of ore-body, attitude, treatment demands, possible resultant pressures, and cost and profit comparison of methods. Successful caving methods can be classified under six main headings: (1) Full-protected block caving, (2) semi-protected block caving, (3) unprotected block caving, (4) full-panel caving, (5) half block-panel caving, (6) block-panel caving. The methods and factors governing choice of method are shown in Table I. Full-protected Block Caving Full-protected block caving consists of develop-ing, undercutting, and drawing to exhaustion a block of ore of predetermined size without coordination of mining or draw with adjoining areas. The block is mined and drawn as an independent unit (Fig. 1). Full-protected block caving demands that mining and draw cannot be done against unconsolidated capping in adjoining caved and exhausted blocks. Two sides of block are against solid. Caved capping must be allowed to consolidate for a suitable period, usually not less than one year. Pillars may be left in lieu of consolidated capping (Fig. 2). The advantages of full-protected block, caving are: (1) A definite area is developed, mined, and drawn as a unit so that all work may be completed, the block drawn to exhaustion in the minimum length of time, and the area then abandoned. (? Production is not restrained because of coordina1, on with adjoining areas. (3) Records of draw and caved reserve of ore are good. Upon abanwnment of the block, accountability for production is closed out with no carry-over to adjoining areas. The disadvantages of full-protected block caving are: (1) Side dilution from the draw adjacent to the consolidated capping may be serious, particularly where capping does not consolidate sufficiently in the allotted time. (2) Boundary weakening is needed on the solid sides of the block except in weak rocks. (3) Maximum cantilever and compression effect to aid caving and fragmentation may not be secured since the draw should proceed from the solid to the consolidated capping to minimize side dilution. However, undercutting from the loose (caved capping) to the solid with a slight initial draw in the same manner will develop cantilever effect. (4) A period of at least one year, more is usually desirable, must be allowed for caved capping ,to consolidate before mining the adjoining block, depending upon the characteristics of the capping. (5) Capping may not consolidate sufficiently in the time that can be allowed. Full-protected block caving is indicated where: (1) The ground is weak and heavy and workings

The effect of sintering types 302, 3028, and 430 stainless steel powder compacts in hydrogen and dissociated ammonia was investigated. It was found that sintering in dissociated ammonia resulted in as much as 0.5 wt pct increase in the nitrogen content of stainless steel even though the dissociation of the gas was complete. Sintering in hydrogen, on the other hand, reduced the nitrogen content of the stainless steel to less than 0.01 wt pct. In the case of the 302-type stainless steel, the low nitrogen content resulted in a material that was largely ferritic, whereas the high nitrogen content rendered the material fully austenitic. Sintering in dissociated ammonia resulted in lower density, generally lower tensile strength, less ductility, and higher hardness than sintering under equivalent conditions in hydrogen. The reduction of oxides on both stainless steel and iron particles was found to be effected by hydrogen partial pressure in the sintering atmosphere. Compacting pressure was found also to effect oxide reduction during sintering. DISSOCIATED ammonia often is used as a substitute&apos;.&apos; for hydrogen in sintering and in annealing, since economic advantages sometimes can be obtained by such a substitution. In addition, anhydrous ammonia contains very little impurity. Thus, dissociated ammonia gas is very dry whereas tank hydrogen often must be freed of oxygen and water vapor prior to use in many applications. The sintering of stainless steel powder compacts as well as bright annealing is well recognized as requiring a hydrogen atmosphere and for the foregoing reasons dissociated ammonia is frequently substituted. It has generally been overlooked, however, that the nitrogen in dissociated ammonia might have an important effect on the sintering process and on the properties of stainless steel compacts. Considered an inert gas in many applications, nitrogen, on the other hand, is very reactive with cer- tain metals. Dissociated ammonia could not be used for hydriding zirconium or titanium. Nitrogen reacts with columbium, tantalum, chromium, uranium, thorium, and many other active metals. Iron and iron-base alloys are, for the most part, inert in nitrogen but there are many borderline cases. It has been reported that stainless steel stabilized with columbium or titanium should not be sintered in dissociated ammonia.3 olybdenum has been reported as reacting with dissociated ammonia to a minor extent.&apos; Although most of the reactions with iron-base alloys are attributed to the action of un-dissociated ammonia and the action of nascent nitrogen, Uhlig4 showed how readily pure molecular nitrogen reacts with and diffuses into 18-8 stainless steel at 1150°C. He also pointed out how readily nitrogen diffuses out of 18-8 stainless steel when heated in pure dry hydrogen, and these thorough investigations on the subject show that commercial stainless steels are nitrogen-bearing, since they are melted in air. The effects of nitrogen in stainless steel, particularly the 18-8 Cr-Ni type, previously have received considerable attention." In 1926, it was pointed out
