WC-Co nanocomposite powder is among the first group of materials with a promising potential for nanocrystalline-materials application. A chemical vapor synthesis (CVS) process that has previously been used for preparing the aluminides of titanium and nickel, and other metallic and intermetallic powders has been applied to the preparation of WC-Co nanocomposite powder. This CVS system was designed so that a tungsten precursor (WCl6 powder) and a cobalt precursor (CoCl2 powder) were separately fed into each evaporator in a reactor by means of specially designed powder feeders. The reduction and carburization of the vaporized chlorides by methane-hydrogen mixtures produced nanosized WC and Co composite powder. The product is a very uniform mixture of the constituent powders, which is important to ensure a high quality of the bulk cemented tungsten carbide product after consolidation. In the present work, the effects of reaction temperature, CH4 to WCl6 ratio, CH4 to H2 ratio, residence time, and Co content on the powder composition and particle size were determined. The products were characterized using XRD, carbon analyzer, and TEM.

THE production of fluorspar is one of the smaller nonmetallic indus-tries in the United States with a capital investment-about $10,000,000. Shipments from United States mines' in 1936 totaled 176,231 short tons valued at $3,111,268, an average price of $17.65 per ton. Gipronickel Institute JS that is a Research and Development Centre affiliated to the worldclass Norilsk Nickel Mining and Metallurgical Company, and Outokumpu Technologies AB (Boliden Contech AB) have jointly developed the reconstruction project of Pechenganickel metallurgical operations using a two-zone Vanyukov furnace. The international expert group appointed by the Nordic Investment Bank has examined the project. The project financing should be partly executed by the Norway government. Current annual rate of sulfur dioxide emissions is 100 000 t. The aim of the project is to reduce it to 12 000 tpy. Pechenganickel Combine is owned by MMC Norilsk Nickel. Currently it produces nickel high-grade matte from sulfide copper-nickel concentrate with up to ten per cent MgO content. The existing production is in accordance with the following flow sheet: agglomeration û electric furnace smelting with matte production û converting in horizontal converters. Annual production capacity is about 36 000 t of nickel in high-grade matte. Converter gases report to sulfuric acid production. The principal results of studies on high magnesia materials smelting in two-zone Vanyukov furnace, engineering solutions, and technical and economical parameters are offered.

Because of the high number of accidental methane gas ignitions in metal and nonmetal mines, the Bureau of Mines searched for a simple guideline that would allow mine personnel to evaluate the methane hazard in a given mine. Air samples were collected by the Bureau in 53 metal and nonmetal mines and analyzed for trace evidence of methane gas. Samples were collected in the returns and at the working faces. Those mines classified as gassy by the Mine Safety and Health Administration had a significantly higher average methane concentration than those classified as nongassy. Of the 9 gassy mines sampled, 7 had methane concentrations above 100 ppm, whereas only 1 of the 44 nongassy mines had a concentration above 100 ppm. The 100-ppm concentration may be used as a simple and convenient guideline for forecasting the methane hazard in a mine, whether or not the mine is classified as gassy. There was no consistent correlation between commodity mined and methane concentration, nor was there a correlation between mine depth and methane concentration. Neither of these factors can be considered a guideline for predicting methane hazards.

THE suggestion, which appears to find increasing favor, that the elementary composition of coals should be used as the basis of their classification, makes it important that our methods of expressing this elementary composition should be refined. It is doubtful whether many published ultimate analyses of coals are accurate within 1 per cent. carbon. Many are probably as much as 3 or 2 per cent. in error in carbon. It is, perhaps, not always realized that the extreme variation in carbon content over the range of bituminous coals is but 16 per cent. An error of 1 per cent. in carbon on analysis corresponds therefore with one-sixteenth of the whole range, an amount which is unjustifiable even for the application to commercial needs of a system of classification based on ultimate analysis. For the purposes of scientific research such limited accuracy is of little value. The object of this paper is to examine one important source of error in ultimate analysis, that due to the occurrence in coal of inorganic material, and to emphasize the need for the quantitative measurements (of carbon more particularly) on coals to be rendered independent of their contents of such material.

A method based on an approach by Hurst' is developed for calculating water influx behavior. Using this method, superposition calculations may be eliminated. The principal diflerence between this method and that of Hurst is that, over finite intervals of time, constant oil-productton rates are assumed by Hurst whereas constant water influx rates are assumed in the presently described method. By adopting the assumption of constant water influx rate for finite time periods, a method is developed for calculating water influx behavior which lends itself to convenient combination with the material balance equation in the Schilthuis form. Above the bubble point, an equation is given for the explicit step-wise calculation of pressure history for a prescribed oil-production history. Use of this method of calculating water influx behavior should result in a considerable saving of time as compared to superposition calculations when the calculations must be made without using a digital computer. The connection is shown between the method described herein and the method developed by van Ever-dingen and Hursr2 (which requires superposition cal-culations). Also, results obtained using the two methods are compared.

The unstable metal market during 1949, with resulting lower metal prices, has focused every mine operator's attention on the problem of reducing operating costs. Improvement in mining methods, use of modern mechanical mining equipment, and increasing the efficiency of the labor force are the tools with which we will have to work. Careful planning is necessary to coordinate all phases so that no one phase is overdone. A mine may become over-mechanized if, for instance, capital charges against new equipment exceed the savings in labor costs, or where a large enough tonnage is not produced. The cooperation of labor is essential to any mechanization program. There have been too many instances where mechanization and improvements have done nothing more than make up for a decrease in labor efficiency, thus bringing the production of labor back to its old standard. The operator has gained little and labor has gained only a "softer job." In any mechanization program there are gains to be had by both the operator and labor. By the efficient application of modern equipment and improved mining methods the operator should gain by decreased costs, and labor may profit by receiving a share of these decreased costs.

The All-Vanadium Redox Flow Battery that was pioneered and has been developed at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney since the mid-1980s is currently regarded as one of the most attractive energy storage systems for large-scale implementation in a wide range of grid-connected and offgrid applications. Several companies are now manufacturing and installing MW-scale VFBs in applications ranging from renewable energy storage, load-levelling, emergency back-up power and power arbitrage. The full-scale uptake of the VRB in commercial energy storage systems however, is heavily dependent on the availability and cost of vanadium used in the VRB electrolyte. Cost is also a function of purity requirements and although there is little scientific evidence on the effect of impurities on the VRB life and performance, VRB developers continue to demand high purity vanadium at considerable cost. This paper will provide a brief overview of the current understanding of electrolyte impurities on VRB performance together with an economic analysis of the impact of vanadium prices on overall VRB capital and levelised costs for a range of applications.

VENTILATION may be defined as the process by which vitiated air of an inclosed or partly inclosed space is continuously replaced by fresh air. Fresh air has been defined as invigorating pure air. Pure dry air at sea level contains the following gases:1 Analysis of Air at Sea Level PER CENT. Oxygen 20.94 Nitrogen 78.09 Carbon dioxide 0.03 Argon 0.94 Helium, krypton, neon, xenon, hydrogen, hydrogen peroxid, ammonia, ozone traces CARBON DIOXIDE LIMIT For many years carbon dioxide was used as an index of the purity of the air vitiated by the metabolism of people. It was, however, well known that the untoward effects produced on those exposed to such air was not due to the concentration of the carbon dioxide. It has been found that the untoward effects on the comfort and efficiency of those so exposed are due to the increased temperature and humidity. It has been found that men can breathe air containing many times the amount of carbon dioxide found in our worst ventilated theaters and assembly halls, which, according to Rosenau, do not contain above 0.5 per cent. carbon dioxide.

This paper reviews an analytical model that defines the relationship of weight-weighted or volume-weighted average haulage distance with bench height and other related parameters, presents the optimum bench heights under various conditions in terms of minimizing the weighted average haulage distance of ore/waste during the full lifetime of an open pit mine, and discusses the truck haulage economics of mining open pits by high bench, specifically by 15 m, 18 m and 20 m benches through marginal analyses. The observations from these analyses disapprove the previous conflicting assertions that the over-all weighted average haulage distance either increases or decreases directly with bench height. It is concluded that: (1) an increase of bench height to 15 m from 12 m is likely to be viable under the general conditions of large-scale deep open pit mines; (2) the reduction of haulage cost is much limited with the case of increasing bench height to 18 m from 15 m; and (3) the feasibility of mining open pits by 20 m benches is generally questionable. These conclusions may serve as a useful guide for those who advocate open pit mining by high bench.

The goal of this study is to evaluate the coal flotation process and the interaction of the chemical (reagent) and hydrodynamic (machine, operational) variables as they affect yield, flotation of various sized particles, and sulfur and ash rejection. Coal flotation is found to follow a first order process with the coal floating much faster than either pyrite or ash. This circumstance may be used to achieve gangue rejection during flotation. When floated with MZBC, cresol, or pine oil frothers, coal floats in the size sequence: 108 pm ( - 65 mesh), 589 x 808 pm (88 x 65 mesh), and 1.17 mm x: 589 pm (14 x 18 mesh). However with a substantial amount of fuel oil collector, all particles tend to float roughly in proportion to their content in the feed. An increasing aeration rate was found to be the most important variable in increasing the coal flotation rate. This increase in flotation rate, unfortunately, is also accompanied by an increase in the flotation rate of the pyrite. The rejection of pyrite during coal flotation is best accomplished at low aeration rates, low frother concentrations, and low impeller speeds.

Mining is one of the oldest profession and second after agriculture. Unfortunately Mining is not so familiar in the society. Due to lack of recognition in the society, existence of mines in remote places and in dusty and humid working conditions, led the poor response for mining engineering. Mining engineering programs have been increasingly less attractive to the student population over the years due to negative image of mining industry. After graduating in mining engineering, there is not much problem of employment at present. In the last 10 to 15years most of the mining engineering graduates have joined software industry. Even those joined in mining industry also left with in 2 years of service. The main reason for this is not being satisfied with job, it is not only working conditions but also work environment, work culture, remote location of the mines etc. Though many were trying to leave mining profession, the recent economic slow down has prompted some of them to incline towards job safety and retained to mining job. At this juncture a systematic study was taken up to analyze the job satisfaction of mining engineers in India.

The function of a thickener is to optimise and accelerate the process of gravity sedimentation. The desired end product (be that maximised concentrated solids or clarified liquid) determines how the thickener is designed and operated.Significant internal research, together with extensive on-site piloting, by Outotec has resulted in the determination that the application of the appropriate amount and type of shear to hindered settling aggregates can result in a substantial change to the sedimentation process. A new patented technology, called shear enhanced thickening (SET), has been developed. SET results in considerable design implications for full-scale thickeners, including a substantial reduction in required footprint and/or significant increases in underflow density.The development of SET, combined with laboratory and pilot scale verification, will be discussed along with the introduction of this technology to a number of full-scale thickeners. The mineralised members of the Brockman Iron Formation mined at Mt Whaleback are overlain and underlain by shale horizons. To maximise resource recovery, waste movement within the life of mine plan will total approximately 3.3 billion tonnes. Approximately 15 per cent of waste materials contain zones with varying amounts of sulfides and carbon and are referred to as æreactive shaleÆ. Reactive shale has the potential to self-heat and can react with some explosives, resulting in spontaneous explosion. Sulfide rich zones also have the potential to generate acid rock drainage (ARD). Successful mining of reactive shale requires constant co-ordination between the geology, mine planning, mining and environment departments. Safe storage of reactive shale is the focus of ongoing research. Since the mid-1990s, a number of trials have been undertaken at Mt Whaleback in order to further the understanding of the physical and chemical properties of reactive shale. This paper summarises some of these trials, and discusses key learnings arising from interpretation of results. Ultimately, the learnings from this research will provide the guidelines for successful storage of reactive shale.

"The mill at Mattagami Lake Mines treats 3,850 tons per day. The mill feed is a heavy sulphide ore. It is composed ofPyrite & Pyrrhotite - 40%Marmatite - 17%Chalcopyrite - 2%Magnetite - 10%Talc and other Silicates - 31%The sulphides are intimately associated with each other and often finely disseminated throughout the siliceous gangue. An abundance of middling particles exist in the circuit and a delicate balance has to be maintained between concentrate grades and metal recoveries.The metal content of the mill feed fluctuates between 0.4 to 0.7% for copper and 6 to 13% for zinc.The flow sheet of the concentrator is shown in Figure 1.Eight sample streams have been selected for on-stream analysis, namely1. EVERY mine manager, mine geologist, and every prospector in the field who appraises the future of mining properties does so on the basis of a theory of ore deposition whether he recognizes this fact or not. Wherever the ultimate value of a mine or prospect is dependent upon undeveloped ore, any estimate by an engineer or geologist necessarily involves a theory of origin of the deposit. In view of these facts the importance of a thorough understanding of the genesis of ore deposits cannot be overestimated. It well may be that the greatness of our country will depend upon finding reserves of natural resources as yet undiscovered. The genesis of ore deposits offers a fascinating field for study and investigation. This is attested by the large number of geologists who have written at length on the subject. For progress made toward a better understanding of ore genesis we owe much to Kemp, Lindgren, Ransome, Vogt, Emmons, Spurr, Graton, and a host of others. Within my own experience, I have attempted to apply in practice the various concepts and theories that have been advanced by these men.

The technical and safety press have devoted much space in support of or in opposition to the use of booster and auxiliary fans in coal mines. The Mine Safety Board of the U. S. Bureau of Mines has given the matter consideration, and the Mine Ventilation Committee of the A. I. M. E. is now seeking a discussion of the merits and demerits of such fans to guide it in formulating recommendations. In this paper I will set up some principles on which I believe most engineers will agree and from which we may work toward a decision, though as to what that decision shall be there may be a difference in opinion. Before stating the points on which I believe there is accord, I will distinguish between booster and auxiliary fans. Definition of Booster and Auxiliary Fans In discussing underground fans G. S. Rice1 distinguishes between those used to increase the amount of air passing a given point and those used to augment the ventilation locally.
