The process of design, measurement and review is essential if blasting is to continuously improve to meet the increasing productivity goals of most mining operations. To achieve continual improvements, many operators are turning to contractors to provide the necessary technology. Under this arrangement, the contractor becomes the supplier of a service rather than products and assumes some of the risks associated with blasting by guaranteeing the end result. An extensive laboratory campaign was conducted to find a suitable water soluble collector to replace diphenylguanidine (DPG) in the matte separation process. The examination of the collectors was done by measuring the rate of flotation and the best candidate collectors were selected on the basis of the rate parameters. As a result of this search mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) was selected for a plant trial. A plant trial of two weeks duration confirmed that MBT will produce separations at least as good as those obtained with DPG.

The Bureau of Mines was funded by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) to determine how blast vibrations from a local surface coal mine were affecting homes in the towns of Daylight and McCutchanville, located in southwestern Indiana near Evansville. Although Daylight was about two miles from the blasting and McCutchanville four to five miles away, many residents claimed that blast vibrations were damaging their homes. This paper presents a comparison study done at VTT's new pilot plant facilities in Outokumpu, Finland, for chromite ore. The ore was ground in a rod mill -, a ball mill - and high pressure roller mill - ball mill circuit in the capacity range of 0.5 - 3.0 t / h. The main grinding characteristics are discussed and the quality of the products are compared from the mineralogical point of view. The benefits of high pressure roller mill comminution for further mineral processing of chromite is also discussed.

Tailings dam breaches have caused significant life loss, social, economic and environmental damage in recent years. The term "tailings-flow" refers to various forms of tailings outflow movement resulting from the breach of a tailings dam. These flows, comprising a mixture of tailings, water and dam materials, can take different forms, ranging from a debris flood to a flowslide, and can travel long distances and impact large areas. The inundation extents depend on the failure mechanism, tailings dam height, total released volume, sediment concentration (associated with the rheological behaviour of the flow) and downstream conditions (including topography, land cover and presence of a water body). Numerical runout modelling of tailings dam breaches is important for predicting the dynamics and extent of tailings-flows, which are crucial steps in tailings dam consequence analysis and risk management. This paper presents a comparison of numerical simulations of the 1994 Merriespruit tailings dam breach using three numerical models: DAN3D, FLO-2D and MADflow3D. Using compiled site condition information and data from the literature and public domain, model performance was evaluated primarily based on comparisons between the observed and simulated inundation extents. The main purpose of this preliminary model benchmarking exercise was to help us evaluate the capabilities and limitations of each model, and to identify opportunities for future model improvements as part of a broader research initiative known as CanBreach. This exercise also highlights the inherent complexity of tailings-flows and the importance of using judgement to interpret model input and results.

The threat of rock bursts along with the danger from methane gas and coal dust explosions belongs to particularly dangerous phenomena in Polish pit-coal mines. This phenomenon results mainly from the physical-mechanical properties of the rock mass as well as the geological-tectonic structure of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. In the postwar years in Polish coal mining thanks to a multi- directional activity, a decrease of rock bursts and their effects has been noted. For example, the number of rock bursts reported in 1965 amounted to 71 in comparison to only 23 in 1974. The ratio of rock bursts calculated for 100,000 tons of coal extracted from rock bursting strata amounted to 0.08 in 1965; however, in 1974 it amounted to 0.023 /Fig. 1/. These results were obtained in face of a continually growing potential threat from rock bursts caused by the systematic increase of extraction from rock bursting strata, exploitation at gradually greater depths along with the extension of exploitation into deposits enclosed in different types of pillars and other parts of deposits surrounded by workings. Despite the achievements of science and mining practice in this field, this threat has not yet been fully studied and controlled as it should be, As a result, research on preventing rock bursts is being continually widened in Poland. This research has a complex, multi-staged and long-range character. Theory, laboratory and field work in the mines are working on a solution to the problem.

The surface charge, electrokinetic potential and surface conductance were studied for silica, alumina and rutile as the functions of PH and concentration of 1-1 electrolyte solutions. The adsorption potentials of potential-determining and specifically adsorbed ions were calculated from isoelectric and zero charge points on the basis of Stern equation and thermodynamic description. From surface conductance and charge data the mean ionic mobilities in double layer were estimated. The results give some information about the real structure of oxide-electrolyte interface and gel-layer concept.

INTRODUCTION The increasing concern for the environment may well present far more opportunities than problems for those involved in all phases of tunneling. All too frequently in the past, environmentalists and their concerns have been cast in a negative light, as obstacles to be overcome. Often forgotten is the fact that these same environmental concerns have created a rapidly increasing demand for new tunnels. Tunnels for rapid transit projects, clean water supply, and sewage treatment have been given a boost because of environmentalists' concerns about overuse of automobiles, inadequate water supplies, and improper sewage disposal. Concurrent with increasing use of tunnels to help solve or alleviate some of our environmental problems is an obligation not to create new ones in the process. Concerns which we feel responsible tunnel owners, engineers, and contractors should address themselves to include: (1) Minimum energy consumption, both during construction and in operation of the completed project; (2) proper storage and/or disposal of the excavated material; (3) minimum disruption during the construction process - noise, traffic, unnecessarily unsightly work areas, and possible weakening of foundations of nearby structures; and (4) a finished project consistent with community and environmental goals. We are especially concerned about two things. First, the longrun implications of a project -- what's good for a few people in the short-run may be bad for most of the people in the long-run. The application of roadheading and drag tool equipped machines requires an assessment of both cutting performance and tool consumption. Neither parameter can be assessed purely from compressive strength and tool consumption is often neglected, at a cost to the project. Results from in-situ monitoring show that a measurement of relative abrasivity using the Cercharscratch abrasivity test provides a basis for the assessment of tool consumption. This can be modified by also considering the effects of the machine specification and the rock mass quality.

Tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have been used for the construction of various tunnels for mining projects for the purpose of access, conveyance of ore and waste, drainage, exploration, water supply and water diversion. Several mining projects have seen the successful and economic beneficial use of TBMs, and there is an increasing awareness of the benefits of TBMs for mining projects. Key technical considerations for the use of TBMs for the construction of tunnels for mining projects include geological issues (rock type, rock alteration, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, ground water inflows), depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, TBM constraints, minimum tunnel size, tunnel support requirements, contractor and labor experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer key project schedule benefits with high rates of progress, which is a unique economic advantage recognized for mining projects where timing is of the essence in order to advance mining development and achieve early startup for operations. A thorough evaluation of the anticipated ground conditions should be performed as part of the decision to adopt a TBM for a mining project. Minimum specifications for TBMs are necessary in order to prevent the incorrect type of TBM from being used. Appropriate geotechnical investigations are necessary in order to provide key information on the anticipated subsurface conditions for careful planning and design of the proposed tunnel alignment. The overall site and geological conditions associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs for some mining projects due to a perceived higher risk.

This paper investigates, through case studies on a porphyry copper and a coal deposit, the differences and relevances between an approximate production schedule approach, i.e., the best case and the worst case schedules and a practical production schedule approach. The comparisons were with regards to: 1) choosing an optimum ultimate pit size, 2) determining processing capacities, 3) selecting 'optimum' cutoff grades, and 4) blending. The comparison criteria was to maximize the project net present value. Conclusions were drawn based on the study results.

As part of its goal to help maintain an adequate supply of minerals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating a fused-salt electrolytic procedure for producing zinc metal. A previous report described preliminary, small-scale work on the fused-salt electrolysis of ZnC12. The present report covers a more detailed investigation of the properties of ZnC12-alkali metal chloride electrolyte systems in relation to the production of zinc metal and also discusses electrolysis in largescale, internally heated cells. The effect of composition on bath stability, current efficiency, cell voltage, and liquidus temperature was determined for the ZnCla-NaC1-KC1, ZnC12-NaC1-LiC1, and ZnC12-KC1-LiC1 electrolyte systems. An electrolyte com-posed of 38 mole-pct ZnC12, 31 mole-pct NaC1, and 31 mole-pct KC1 gave the best overall results. Sludge (ZnO) formation in the ZnC12-NaC1-KC1, ZnC12-KC1-LiC1, and ZnC12-KC1 systems was investigated during prolonged electrolysis. The ZnC12-KC1-NaC1 electrolyte showed the least sludge formation. A 1,500-amp cell was operated using the ZnC12-NaC1-KC1 electrolyte at 500° C. Zinc metal was produced at the rate of 4.0 lb/hr with a current efficiency of 95 pct.

Conventional disposal of waste rock results in the construction of benches with fine and coarse layers dipping at the angle of repose. This interbedded structure influences flow pathways within the waste rock. A numerical modeling program was conducted to study a four-layer system consisting of alternating fine and coarse waste rock. The system was inclined from the vertical to forty-five degrees with heights varying from one to twenty meters. The results show the effects of gravity as preferential flow developed under unsaturated flow conditions.

Preliminary results of a mineralogical, geo-chemical and nutrient analysis of soil samples collected from Omalos polje-plateau are presented. This study is part of a project concerning the relationship of lithology and mineralogy characteristics of soils of different geological origin from the island of Crete with their chemical composition, and more specifically with their ionic nutrients content. The results presented in this work show a relatively good correlation of the mineralogy and the bulk content of the soils examined with the available nutrients in soil solution.
