Ball clay production in 1991 amounted to about 800 kt (880,000 st), about the same as in 1990. 1992 estimates show a 5% decrease to 750 kt (827,000 st). This decrease continued a trend of reduced production that began after the peak of 900 kt (1 million st) that occurred in 1988. Use of ball clay in sanitary ware was about 2% less in 1992, although levels of use in floors and wall tile, dinner ware and pottery remained constant. Filler, extender and binder applications continued to be important end uses, accounting for about 17% of total market. Refractory uses maintained their market share of about 17 kt (18,700 st). Use of clay liners in toxic and waste dumps is an application widely found in Germany. However, its use has not been fully exploited in the United States. This could represent an opportunity for domestic clay producers. Tennessee remained the leading source of ball clays. Other producers were Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi and Texas. Tennessee's production, however, decreased about 3% in tonnage produced and its value dropped from 68% to 65% of total production. The ceramics division of Southern Clay Products, Inc., was bought from LaPorte plc by United Clays of Texas, Inc., a US subsidiary of Watts Blake Bearne & Co. The purchase included ball clay reserves at Troup, TX. The acquisition makes United Clays the second largest ball clay producer in the United Sates. A new permanent-magnet material has been developed with unusual mechanical as well as magnetic properties. Specimens that have been cast or subjected to a small amount of hot reduction by rolling or swaging may be machined, punched, tapped or drilled. The composition range of the alloys is 30 to 52 per cent iron, 36 to 62 per cent cobalt and 4 to 16 per cent vanadium. After being either quenched, annealed or given the usual cold finishing passes and then heated for 2 hr. at 600°C., such materials have a magnetic energy product of 1.0 X 106 gauss-oersteds. This product is equivalent to that of the well-known Honda steel (36 per cent Co, 4W, 2 Cr, 0.8 C. 0.3 Mn, balance Fe). Material handled in the manner just described does not depend on cold-working for its magnetic properties, and is known as Vicalloy I. The preferred composition for Vicalloy I is 38.5 per cent iron, 52 per cent cobalt and 9.5 per cent vanadium. When the alloys are first hot-worked, then considerably reduced in area by cold-swaging, drawing or groove rolling and then heat-treated, the magnetic energy product measured in the direction of previous extension is increased to 2.0 to 3.5 X 106 gauss-oersteds. When limestone (Ca03) is calcined in rotary kilns to produce quicklime (CaO), it is not unusual for 10% to 20% of the stone to abrade and emerge from the kiln as quicklime fines (-6.3 mm or -0.25 in.). While there are various industrial processes that can use fines, handling and shipping is tricky and dangerous. Due to the highly caustic nature of quicklime, airborne dust easily bums eyes and skin. On the other hand, money has already been invested in mining (or buying) the raw material and in the equipment and energy needed for calcining. Discarding the fines will not only waste that investment, but add even more cost in transportation and possibly dumping charges. So the question becomes, how can fines best be turned into a revenue-generating asset? Some plants convert leftover quick-lime fines into calcium hydroxide - Ca(OH)2, also known as hydrated or water-slaked lime - for sale into agricultural applications. For farm uses, hydrated lime fines are preferred over quicklime because they are easier to handle. And they are favored over raw limestone fines for their higher concentration of calcium and greater solubil¬ity. From the producer's viewpoint, quicklime fines are ideal for this use because they go through hydration faster than the larger chunks of quicklime. Those larger chunks, or "pebble lime," are more readily salable and more easily handled, for such uses as steel, copper, aluminum and magnesium production, water waste treatment, chemical, paper, glassmaking and flue gas desulfurization in coal- fired boilers.

In the Fort Union formation of western North Dakota, eastern Montana and northeastern Wyoming there are immense tonnages of lignite and subbituminous coal that have not yet been evaluated in terms of present economic conditions. The general lack of detailed geologic and topographic maps of this region, coupled with a considerable interest in some of its deposits, has spurred the North American Coal Corp. to develop a rapid, economical method of producing its own maps on which to base a quantitative evaluation of the coal reserves involved. The techniques the company employs in this mapping and evaluation program are simple photogeologic and photogrammetric procedures that can also be applied to other exploration and mining work. The air photos, in addition to being used for photogeologic interpretation, have been successfully applied to locating drainage cuts, haul roads, and road metal deposits as well as for various property studies and general mine and reclamation planning. The present discussion will deal primarily with North American's photogeological reconnaissance method of mapping and evaluating relatively flat- lying to shallow-dipping coal beds with limited topographic control and a minimum of core drilling. The field tools employed under this method include aerial photographs and pocket stereoscopes, engineering levels, aneroid barometers, portable transceiver radios and core drills. Field information developed on the photos is transferred to maps for measurement of reserves and overburden. To date this method has been used to map and analyze nearly 6 billion tons of Fort Union lignite and subbituminous coal.

This is the eighth annual tabulation of royalty information. Again this year, some of the older information has been deleted to make room for nearly 30 new entries. Several articles and publications have appeared recently that relate to mineral royalty or mineral valuation. R. B. Parsons wrote "Mining agreements, royalties and profits" (CIM Bulletin, November 1988). He distinguished between net smelter return (NSR) and net profit interest (NPI). Parsons used examples to show the difference between these royalty payment methods. Mining Engineering (January 1990) carried an article by H. V. S. Tingley entitled "Using business due diligence to help evaluate mineral deposits." The article identifies some factors that must be examined during mergers or acquisitions in the mining industry. Since each mining operation is unique, each has risks and opportunities that need recognition and evaluation. The author suggests that a team is necessary for a proper evaluation because no one person has expertise in all of the factors that must be examined. Also in January's Mining Engineering was "Limestone mining: Reserves and valuation," by B. C. Lewis and R. P. Moran. They presented two case studies of valuation of limestone reserves. One was a 109-hm2 (270-acre) parcel in West Virginia and the other a 121-hm2 (300-acre) tract in Alabama. The authors discussed risk, discount rates, and royalty methods as financial parameters in valuation of limestone reserves. Introduction The Gold Quarry gold deposit is the largest bulk tonnage epithermal gold deposit in northeastern Nevada to be developed by Newmont Gold Co., formerly known as Carlin Gold Mining Co. Exploration and development of the deposit extended over a period of nearly 50 years before bulk tonnage mining became economically feasible. Proven reserves at Gold Quarry are currently estimated at more than 255 t (8.2 million oz.) of gold, accounting for more than 40% of the total Carlin Trend mineable reserves for 1986. Milling began in late 1985; dump leaching of lower grade ores began in May of 1986. The mill has exceeded the initial design throughput rate of 6.3 kt/d (7000 stpd) and is now processing more than 8 kt/d (9000 stpd). The dump leach facility will process more than 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lower grade ores in 1986. The Gold Quarry ore body is to be developed by an open pit that will eventually be 1830 m (6000 ft) long, 1220 m (4000 ft) wide and 300 m (1000 ft) deep. The mine currently produces 77 kt/d (85,000 stpd) on a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day workweek. Planned pit production will increase to nearly 168 kt/d (185,000 stpd) in 1988. Production equipment currently includes one Demag H-/285, three Komatsu PC-1500 hydraulic shovels, two Cat 992C loaders and 21 90 to 135 t (100 to 150 st) haul trucks. Tunnels are defined as underground passages made without removing the overlying materials. From time immemorial men have driven tunnels for mining purposes. Even today tunnels are the building blocks for underground mines. The total length of such a network of tunnels in a mine may add up to 10-100 miles! In addition to this, rapid development of vehicular traffic, needs for air raid protection and metropolitan traffic problems have given a great impetus to underground tunnel construction. But for the successful drivage of any tunnel an adequate air environment has always been and remains an essential prerequisite. This is particularly true for tunnels in mines which are driven in gas bearing strata often at a substantial depth from the surface. An adequate air environment is designed to promote the health, safety and comfort of workers which results in greater productivity and efficiency. Its legal definition varies from country to country but, in general, it means the provision of sufficient circulating air, often at specified velocities, to maintain: (i) at least 19% oxygen in the working areas (ii) Concentration of pollutants, e.g., methane, carbon monoxide, respirable dust, etc. below specified limits. Table 1 shows the maximum allowable concentrations for some of these pollutants.1 (iii) Temperature and relative humidity below specified limits. Ventilation of tunnels in mines assumes ever. greater importance today because of increased mechanization and concentration of output which leads to higher rate of production of inflammable gases and respirable dust. INTRODUCTION Underground structures are generally regarded to be safer than surface structures during strong seismic motion, except when crossing a causative fault. Recent studies of observed earthquake damage to tunnels generally support this view, although instances of severe damage and, occasionally, collapse are reported. For proposed underground construction of sensitive structures such as nuclear power plants, liquefied natural gas facilities, and nuclear waste repositories, a verification of the seismic response of underground structures will be required.. This paper discusses the stabilization recommendations used in a study of additional costs required to protect tunnels against ground motion caused by earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions (1). The study is a part of the site investigations for possible construction of a nuclear waste repository. The additional costs estimated in the study are not presented here; only the stabilization measures are presented in the present paper. The tunnels, which would constitute the underground facilities of a possible repository, are assumed to be 5.5 m (18 ft) in diameter and to be located at a depth of 600 m (2,000 ft). Three candidate geological materials are considered: argillite (shale), granite, and tuff. Several peak ground accelerations are used: 0.3g, 0.5g, and 0.7g for earthquakes, and 0.5g, 0.7g, and 1.0g for underground nuclear explosions. Potential damage due only to shaking is considered here. This paper does not discuss problems that result from creep or sudden rupture of intersected faults or from ground failures at portals.

Gold mine production in South America was 247.3 tonnes in 1995 up from 156.4 tonnes ten years earlier in 1986. This represents a 58 per cent increase and amounted to 11 per cent of total world gold mine production. The major countries involved in order of production, were: Brazil (67.4 tonnes), Peru (51.5 tonnes),. Chile (48.5 tonnes), Colombia (24.1 tonnes), Venezuela (17.1 tonnes), Bolivia (16.0 tonnes), Ecuador (9.6 tonnes), Guyana (8.8 tonnes), French Guiana (3.3 tonnes) and Argentina (one tonne). The most dramatic increase was reported in Peru where production increased from 10.9 tonnes in 1986 to 51.5 tonnes in 1995, heavily influenced by the production from Minera Yanacocha which began operations in 1993 and produced 17.2 tonnes in 1995.With the reformation of the mining laws and the introduction of investment incentives in all the South American countries in recent years, dozens of major and junior mining companies began flocking into the area in the early-1990s to conduct exploration. A recent study undertaken in Brazil shows that an average of $240 million per year will be expended in this country during the period 1993 - 2010. Twenty-five per cent of this expenditure is expected to be made on gold exploration. Similar figures for Peru are $220 million total per year with 50 per cent for gold; $170 million per year in Argentina with 25 per cent for gold and $120 million ner year in Chile also with 25 Der cent for gold.

The finite element method of analysis was introduced by Clough.1 Within a short period, it has developed into a powerful solution technique in structural and continuum mechanics. It has been used to solve boundary value problems in two and three-dimensional elasticity.2-5 Anisotropy and heterogeneity of materials were allowed for at the earliest stages. 1,4 Its application has been extended to allow for cracks,5 creep and viscoelasticity, 6,7 incremental construction,6-8 nonlinear elasticity3,9 effect of joints in rock,10 and to materials with different behavior in tension and compression.7 Because of its versatility, the finite element method has found increasing application in the field of rock mechanics. In fact, several of the more significant developments have been motivated by problems in this field. Elasto-plastic material behavior based on the incremental or rate-type theory of plasticity rather than the deformation theory was considered by Reyes and Deere11 A material law based on a generalization 12 of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion was used. In this chapter, the formulation of material laws developed by Reyes and Deere 11 is used. An efficient analysis procedure, incorporating recent developments in finite element analysis, is developed for plane-strain conditions. To demonstrate its effectiveness, the procedure is applied to three cases, one for which an exact solution is available, another for which field observations had been made, and a third one for which a parallel study was made, using an accepted limit-equilibrium method.

The term metamorphism as commonly used means any change in a rock in either form or composition, from whatever cause. By metasomatism, according to Lindgren, is meant a metamorphism that involves a change in the chemical composition of a rock by the addition or subtraction of substance. Certain types of metamorphism are due to the action of mineralizing solutions, and are closely connected with ore deposition; they form, therefore, valuable guides in the exploration for ore- deposits. Other types of metamorphism are due to regional processes, and are not connected with ore deposition. By dynamo-regional metamorphism is meant a primary alteration of rocks over large areas under conditions of pressure, flowage, and heat. This process produces schists and gneisses from either sediments or igneous rocks. It is thought that there is little migration of minerals or of elements in dynamo-regional metamorphism, and that the changes are due chiefly to recrystallization and rearrangement of original minerals in bands with their major axes oriented normal to the direction of greatest pressure. Under these conditions limestones are commonly altered to marble, and sandstones to quartzite, basic igneous rocks to greenstone or serpentine, while rocks of normal or acid com- position commonly yield the usual types of schist or gneiss. Dynamo-regional metamorphism, extending over large areas, has no connection with mineralizing processes, and is, therefore, no guide to ore deposits; while this process has certain features, such as characteristic mineral associations, in common with contact metamorphism, the results of the two processes may usually be distinguished without difficulty.

THE wire-rope hoisting conditions at the mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Butte, Mont., are very severe because of the conditions under which it is necessary to operate. A study was made, in the fall of 1919, for the purpose of changing these conditions in order to obtain longer rope and sheave life. There are at present in Butte, hoisting engines equipped with wire rope as follows: 9 main hoists using flat ropes. 7 main hoists using 1 ½ in. rope. 5 main hoists using 1 ¼ in. rope. 6 shafts using 1 1/8 in. rope. 2 chippy hoists using 1 ¼ in. rope. 9 chippy hoists using 1 1/8 in. rope. 15 shafts using 1 in. rope. 7 shafts using 7/8 in. rope. 1 shaft using ¾ in. rope. In addition, there are a number of sinking engines using 5/8 in., ¾ in., 7/8 in., and 1 in. (15.9, 19, 22, and 25 mm. rope.) The flat ropes run from ½ by 7 ½ in. (12.7 by 190.5 mm.) to ½ by 4 ½ in. (9.5 by 114 mm.) and are used on the older hoisting-engines, which are set comparatively close to the shaft. Because of swelling and moving ground at some of the shafts, these ropes present certain difficulties in operation that are more pronounced than with round ropes; they are, therefore, being superseded by round ropes as newer engines are being installed. They are, however, much more easily inspected and repaired than round ropes.

ABSTRACT: The paper presents investigation of carboniferous slates from the Trojane hilly area performed on series of samples of equal material. The results of static loading tests show that carboniferous slate is heterogeneous and yields on slate layers. Where that kind of heterogeneity is distinctive the strength results are essentially lower of commonly tests results. The results of dynamical loading tests show that the slate surfaces have the essential meaning for the stability of the material. When those surfaces are moistened the material become unstable. RÉSUMÉ: L'article présente une épreuve des ardoises carbonifères de la région montagneuse de Trojane sur une série des échantillons des matériaux identiques. Les résultats des tests de charge statique montrent que l'ardoise carbonifère est hétérogène et qu'elle cède sur les couches d'ardoise. Quand l'hétérogénéité est distinctive, les résultats de stabilité sont essentiellement plus bas que les résultats obtenus par des tests ordinaires. Les résultats des tests de charge cyclique montrent que les surfaces d'ardoise sont très importantes pour la stabilité du matériel. Quand ces surfaces sont mouillés, le matériel devient instabile. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Artikel präsentiert die Forschung von Karbonschiefersteinen im Bereich des Bergland Trojane, ausgeführt durch Serien von Proben aus den gleichen Erdmaterial. Production reporting is a natural computer application and is often one of the first applications implemented by new computer users. Automation of a manual reporting system is a good place for new computer users to gain computing experience because generation of basic reports - is fairly straightforward, and automation can often be justified easily on the basis of clerical cost savings. Computers are particularly well-suited for reporting applications which generally satisfy the criteria for effective computerization. Three characteristics must be present to effectively utilize a computerized system: 1) The potential application must be precisely definable. If an algorithm for data processing cannot be developed, data cannot be processed. 2) The operation to be performed must be repetitive. If a particular function is only going to be performed once, computerized systems development is probably not justified. 3) The volume of the data to be processed must be relatively large. If only a few items of data must be manipulated, manual methods are probably adequate. Although a computer can perform only a few functions (it can compute; it can make comparisons; it can rearrange data), it can perform these functions much faster and more accurately than a human being can. The ability to classify and reclassify data in a variety of ways and the ability to summarize data make the computer an ideal tool for production reporting. Production reports can be classified into three major categories, depending on their purpose. Reports can be used for (1) informative, (2) analytical, and (3) control purposes.

The capacity of a helical pile can be determined analytically using the individual bearing or cylindrical shear methods which are dependent on soil strength parameters and helical bearing area. The torque correlation method is widely used in the helical industry to determine the capacity during installation by monitoring torque during the final seating of the helicals. This method has been shown to be a better predictor of strength than the individual bearing or cylindrical shear methods. To determine capacity using the torque correlation method, the final average installation torque (ft-lbs) is multiplied by an empirical torque correlation factor (Kt, ft-1). Kt values have been well documented for square bar shaft helical products and can vary from about 3 to 20 ft-1 depending on pile geometry and soil type. A default value of 10 ft-1 is generally used for all square shaft sizes and soil conditions. Less research has been done on determination of Kt for round pipe shaft helical products. Studies have indicated that factors which affect Kt include soil type/strength, number of helical plates, helix spacing, helix pitch, depth of embedment, downward pressure (crowd), shaft diameter (round pipe) and load application direction while other studies have discounted some of these factors as inconsequential. This paper reviews past research findings regarding Kt determination for square and round pipe shaft helical products and presents a case history of round shaft helical pile installations in Chicago clay which resulted in much lower than expected Kt values.

Recovery of fine coal from solids reporting to wash water has become increasingly important. These solids range from about 28 mesh to 0 and constitute 3 to 7 pct by weight of the feed tonnage to a coal preparation plant. In the past they were usually wasted to streams, but present clean stream legislation makes it necessary to remove them from the wash water and, if economically possible, recover the associated coal as a saleable product. Where these solids are not wasted to streams or to slime ponds they are recovered by thickeners and filters. Since filter cake is often high in ash or sulfur, or both, it is not readily marketed or used. Common practice is to mix it with other plant products, generally slack or cleaned run-of-mine. Uniform blending is difficult, not only because the impurity is usually high, but also because during certain operating periods it is possible to get a concentration of this filter cake in a railroad or barge. At some plants filter cake has been derived from the froth flotation clean-up of Dorr thickener underflow. The operating circuits required for a froth flotation plant make this a comparatively high-cost treatment, and in the last few years experiments have been carried out with bulk oil methods. These also are quite expensive and lend themselves only to special situations. Table I gives some characteristics of thickener underflows for plants in the Pittsburgh area treating Pittsburgh seam coal. It will be noted that there is a concentration of impurities in the -200 mesh sizes.
