The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Low of the Sea includes provisions under Article 76 for extending a coastal State's jurisdiction beyond the 200-nautical-mile (nm) Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and for establishing the seaward limits of sovereign rights over natural resources. Article 76 prescribes a set of methodologies for determining these outer limits based on physiography and sediment thickness. The methodologies were applied to each of the five continental* margin areas of the United States - Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, and Pacific Islands-using existing digital hydrographic and geologic data. Figures 1 and 2 show the results of applying the methodologies to the Atlantic, Pacific, Alaskan, and Gulf of Mexico continental shelves. Figure 1 depicts the preliminary limits of each of the Article 76 determinations for the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico continental shelves. The Atlantic limits were described by Carpenter, Thormahlen, and Amato (1995) at the 26th Underwater Mining Institute.1 The limits for the Alaskan continental shelves are shown in Figure 2. Additional areas beyond the 200 nm EEZ are highlighted. These include a small area north of the U.S. - Canada boundary, containing 7,000 km2, a large area north of Point barrow (395,000 km2), and a third area north of the Aleutian Islands (178,000 km2). The shelf between the first two areas appears to have sediments thick enough to qualify for the 1 percent method (Irish Formula); however, year-round ice cover has prevented acquisition of seismic or drill data. The entire northern Alaska shelf is prospective for petroleum The Gulf of Mexico (Figure 1) has two small areas beyond the EEZ known as "doughnut holes." One is south of Louisiana and includes part of the Sigsbee Escarpment, an area believed to have potential for oil and gas. Oil was found on Sigsbee Knoll in cores from Deep Sea Drilling Project's Leg 1 cruise in 1968. The Sigsbee areas contains about 6,000 km2. The second area is south of the Florida panhandle and contains about 12,000 km2.

The Northern Sewerage Project (NSP) is a $650 M infrastructure project that will increase the capacity of the sewerage system for Melbourne’s growing northern suburbs while also helping to protect the Merri and Moonee Ponds creeks by significantly reducing the number of sewage overflows that can occur after heavy rainfall. The NSP consists of two stages: Stage 1 (NSP1) will be owned and operated by Melbourne Water Corporation, and Stage 2 (NSP2) will be owned by Yarra Valley Water and operated by Melbourne Water Corporation.Glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) was used on both NSP stages, however, since Stage 1’s schedule for installation of GRP was slightly ahead of Stage 2’s, this paper will only focus on Stage 1’s use of GRP.NSP1 involves the construction of 7.9 km of new sewer tunnel ranging in diameter from 1.6 to 2.5 m, five main access shafts at depths of up to 65 m, and connections to the existing sewerage system including several access manholes. Construction began in 2007, and project completion is expected in 2012.The original design for NSP1 specified the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE-) line precast concrete pipes as the final tunnel lining and HDPE-lined reinforced concrete for the access shafts and manholes. During construction, the rising cost of precast concrete pipes and the introduction of an additional GRP pipe supplier in the market justified a review of the tunnel final lining material. The contractor-proposed GRP pipe alternative was accepted for the final tunnel lining based on time and cost savings that were possible without compromising the design intent. After gaining experience with GRP through this design change, Melbourne Water Corporation reviewed and accepted GRP as the final lining for five smaller connection manholes. The use of GRP for the manholes was particularly inventive as the redesign made use of the approved tunnel GRP pipes as both a structural and corrosion-resistant lining.This paper discusses the use of GRP on NSP1; how the change in material, from concrete to GRP, affected the design philosophies assumed during detailed design; and how construction methods were modified to handle the less rigid GRP material. Details on the structural, hydraulic and durability considerations for the design are included, as are details about the time and cost savings and the quality and safety improvements that were achieved during construction.

This paper is one of a series of articles dealing with milling methods and costs at metal mines in the United States, written in accordance with an outline prepared by engineers of the United States Bureau of Mines and published by the bureau. The Netta mine and concentrator is the largest of the plants of the Eagle-Picher Lead Co, It is located in Ottawa County, in the extreme northeast corner of Oklahoma, and in what is known as the Tri-State zinc and lead mining district, embracing the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southwest corner of Missouri, and the southeast corner of Kansas. A majority of the production comes from the Oklahoma section, with Kansas second, and Missouri third.

The Bureau of Mines used mathematical reliability theory to define, for use in the mining industry, the concepts of risk, safety, reliability, hazard, and mean time between accidents. In this report, the definitions are explained theoretically and illustrated by application to actual underground mine accident data extending over a 9-1/2-year period. The theoretical development proceeds along two parallel analytical paths. For each line of reasoning, the data are presumed to be independent. If they are not, the analysis stops, although there are interesting implications when dependency is demonstrated. The first method uses the elapsed times between accidents as the basic data. These elapsed times are fitted to a negative exponential distribution function using least squares and yielding the function parameter, P1 The P1 is used to form the Poisson distribution function for the data, which is then used to define the safety-related concepts. The second method uses the maximum likelihood estimator to formulate a Poisson distribution function for the data. The function is tested for adequacy by a goodness-of-fit test; if the fit is acceptable, the Poison function is used to define the concepts. Both methods were applied to the data base, yielding nearly identical results.

In 1958, the coal industry, through Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and the electric utility industry, through the Edison Electric Institute and the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies, initiated a joint program to study coal pyrite and its removal as a means of lowering the sulfur content of steam coals. It was assumed that significant amounts of pyrite often remained in washed steam coal not because available systems for coal cleaning were inadequate, but because the pyrite was small and widely disseminated, During the first two years, samples of coal were examined petrographically to determine the size, association, and mode of occurrence of the pyrite in the raw coal and in the products of laboratory separation, Samples of coal were also pulverized in different equipment to determine how effectively pyrite was released by pulverization and if the mode of pulverization affected the liberation of pyrite. From these studies, the following tentative conclusions were made (1 ): 1. Much of the coal pyrite is within a 250-70 micron size range, and therefore is too small to be removed by conventional coal cleaning, but relatively large when compared to the size of coal as pulverized for combustion in large boilers. 2. The degree of pyrite liberation is mainly determined by the size of the product and not by the type of crusher. 3. For improved pyrite removal, the coal should be cleaned during or after pulverization at the power station.

The silver phase of silver and finely divided alumina composites is shown to grow as single crystabs upon solidification from the melt. These crystals grow without the aid of an externally applied thermal gradient or a mold. The single-crystal growth is more readily disrupted as the alumina content varies from the optimum concentration of 20 wt pct. Pretreatment such as variation of fabrication pressure, and presintering of the specimens appear to play a lesser role in this phenomenon. In actual practice the growth of single crystals of metals from the melt is a tedious, painstaking process.' Care must be taken to insure the proper thermal gradients and rate of growth in a vibration-free environment. Excellent single crystals can be grown when these variables are controlled. When a second insoluble and finely divided phase is present in the melt the growth of single crystals is difficult, if not impossible, even under the most favorable conditions outlined above. During the past few years, a composite of silver and alumina has demonstrated an ability to resist flow even though the major phase, silver, is mo1ten. 2 A more surprising feature of this material is the ease with which single crystals of silver grow upon cooling the composite from temperatures above the melting point of silver to temperatures near room temperature. Observations have been made that demonstrate that single crystals of silver will grow even when conditions most unfavorable for growth of pure silver crystals exist. The crystals grown in this manner are imperfect in that a great deal of subgrain structure exists. It is the purpose of this manuscript to qualitatively describe this process and to attempt to isolate the influencing factors of this behavior. MATERIAL PREPARATION The composite material is prepared by powder-metallurgical techniques. Two items of great importance are the introduction of oxygen into the system and the obvious need for a thorough mixing of the metallic and refractory oxide phases. The oxygen is necessary in order that the silver wets the alumina. Without oxygen the phases separate and the material shows no unusual properties. In order to supply the needed oxygen the silver is added in the form of silver oxide which is readily decomposed to oxygen and silver upon heating. The silver oxide is readily obtained in a finely divided form that allows a uniform mixture of the alumina and silver oxide to be prepared. The correct ratio of alumina to silver oxide is mixed in the presence of alcohol in an ordinary food blender. The mixture has the consistency of a thin slurry and after mixing for approximately 20 min is dried and pressed into billets at various pressures. As is shown in Fig. 1, there is no limit to the shape of the specimens obtainable as single crystals. These billets are heated in air in a predeter-

The purpose of this paper is to outline the main points in the construction of the various types of wire ropes more commonly used for winding in Australia; and the maintenance of the ropes, and cage and skip safety gear as practised at the South mine, Broken Hill.It should be mentioned that both of the shafts at present in use are dry, and both downcast with or without the assistance of the two exhaust fans normally in use: Night shift and week.-end overtime are practicaly non-existent.Thus, during night shift, the cages in No. 7 shaft are landed on the chairs at the surface, providing efficient covers for the· shaft, and allowing the maximum amount of rope to be wound on to the drums. This also applies to the cages of both No. 7 and No. 4 shafts during the week-ends.These factors, combined with electric winding and skip haulage, are calculated to obtain the best use of the ropes when properly attended.WINDING ROPES-TYPE AND CONSTRUCTIONThese ropes may be divided into four main types which will include the more commonly used constructions(a) One-size strand.(b) Warrington strand.(c) Flattened strand.(d) Locked coil.1. The abandoned Manitou mine site covers an area of approximately 190 ha near Val d?Or, Quebec. This old site has been generating acid mine drainage for several decades. In 2006, a partnership was established between the Quebec Ministry of Ressources Naturelles (MRN) and Agnico-Eagle Mines to reclaim the Manitou site using tailings from the nearby Goldex mine. These neutral tailings were to be deposited on top of the Manitou site. An extensive study was performed to evaluate specific reclamation scenarios to control acid mine drainage using Goldex tailings as cover material. The article first describes the global approach used for this evaluation, which includes in-situ hydrogeological monitoring, tailings characterization, laboratory column tests, and numerical modelling. Of the thirteen column tests, three were conducted to evaluate the parameters affecting the performance of covers made of Goldex tailings placed over the spillage area of the Manitou site. Geochemical and hydrogeological parameters were assessed during the leaching column tests for almost two years. The tests aimed at evaluating the effect of water table level and monolayer cover thickness on the overall performance. The testing procedure involved monthly leaching and measurement of geochemical parameters. Results indicate that water table position is the most important factor affecting the monolayer cover performance to control AMD. Based on these results, it was established that the water table must be located near the interface between the Goldex and Manitou tailings to effectively reduce AMD generation. Cover thickness also has an impact on cover performance, which is however less significant than the water table position. The testing scenario with a water table located at the interface with a one-meter Goldex tailings cover showed progressive improvement in effluent quality.

THE performance of welded structures is closely associated with the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of the steel from which they are made. A low transition temperature is desirable because it indicates that the steel is less likely to fail suddenly at low ambient temperatures. Structures such as bridges, ships, storage tanks, and pipelines are usually made from hot rolled semikilled steel. Changes in rolling practice or chemical composition appear to be the most practical methods for improving the toughness of such materials. This results from the fact that production is likely to be seriously curtailed if improvements were obtained by recourse to heat treatment or complete deoxidation. This paper discusses the effect of variations in carbon and manganese contents on the properties of semikilled steels. The transition temperature, a property to which considerable importance is attached, varies with specimen configuration, testing method, and criterion of performance. Both the Navy tear test' and the keyhole Charpy test were used in the investigation. According to the terms used by Vanderbeck and Gensamer,V he tear test was used to measure a fracture transition and the Charpy test to measure a ductility transition. In either case the specimens absorb considerably less breaking energy in tests below the transition temperature than in tests above the transition temperature. Decreasing the testing temperature of notched-bar specimens seems to be equivalent in its effect to increasing the severity of loading on fabricated structures. Therefore, structures built from steels exhibiting lower transition temperatures in laboratory tests are expected to be less susceptible to sudden brittle fractures in service. Consequently, changes in composition which lowered the transition temperature of the experimental steels were judged desirable. Materials and Methods The steels for this study were made in a laboratory induction furnace and rolled to 3/4 in. plate, using a finishing temperature of 1850°F. Precautions taken to insure reproducible melting and testing practices are discussed in detail elsewhere.' All tests were made on hot rolled steels. The analyses of the experimental steels are given in Table I. The list includes steels with manganese contents ranging from 0.21 to 1.46 pct, at each of five carbon levels. The phosphorus, silicon, sulphur, and nitrogen contents of the steels are reasonably constant. The tensile and notched-bar properties of the experimental steels are presented in Table 11. Both upper and lower yield points are listed, and all values are averages for duplicate specimens. Transition temperatures based on three criteria are given. The keyhole Charpy transition temperatures are the temperatures at which the energy-temperature curves based on averages of four specimens cross the 20 and 12 ft-lb levels. Both definitions of Charpy transition temperatures have been used by other investigators. Charpy tests were made at intervals of 10°F, using a pendulum with an available striking energy of 220 ft-lb and a velocity of 18.1 ft per sec. The specimens were oriented parallel to the rolling direction and notched normal to the surface of the plates. The tear test transition temperatures are based on the usual' criterion of the highest temperature at which at least one of four specimens exhibits brittle behavior. The dimensions of the tear test specimens are shown in Fig. 1. The specimen is loaded eccentrically in tension, with pin and shackle fixtures, through the large holes while submerged in a liquid bath at the proper temperature. A specimen developing a fracture area with less than 50 pct shear or ductile texture is classed as brittle. Tear tests were made at intervals of 10°F.

The mainline running tunnels for Legacy Way comprise two tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels. Both TBM drives commenced at the Launch Portal adjacent the Mt Coot-tha Road. Excessive surface settlement arising from tunnelling would have had a significant impact to the road infrastructure. The geological structure above the tunnel springline is a mixture of fill, residual soil and weak rock. Given the combination of low ground cover and weak ground materials, along with the use of an open face TBM, an oversize pipe umbrella system has been installed above the tunnels. This pipe umbrella system is similar to that commonly adopted in conventional mined excavation support in soft ground except that the steel pipes are substantially larger in geometry and filled with concrete. It is acknowledged that similar systems with oversize pipe umbrella have been adopted elsewhere in the world in other projects. These systems often comprise of a full arch formed by conjoining oversize steel pipes (in contact only). By aligning the pipes in contact, the arching behaviour of the steel pipe would have been enhanced. However, this poses a degree of construction difficulty due to excavation and installation method of the pipes. The Legacy Way pipe umbrella system only consists of a partial arch at the tunnel crown and each pipe is spaced approximately 1200 mm apart with 900 mm diameter pipe, leaving a gap of approximately 300 mm between pipes. A reinforced concrete portal block was used to support the exposed ends of the pipes.This paper reviews the design analysis, the recorded deflections from the pipe umbrellas and surface monitoring during TBM launch and revisits the analysis using the newly available RS3 program, from Rocscience for 3D analysis of geotechnical structures.CITATION:Norbert, M and O’Connor, D, 2014. Boron increases the hardenability of hypoeutectoid steels by decreasing the nucleation rate of ferrite and bainite. It is postulated that concentrations of lattice imperfections, such as exist at the grain boundaries, furnish the necessary energy for nucleus formation. Boron, because of its atomic diameter, will concentrate at lattice imperfections where sites of suitable size are present. Boron will decrease the energy of these local areas by occupying these sites. This mechanism accounts for the large increase in hardenability observed with small amounts of boron. The loss of the boron hardenability effect and the boron precipitate formation are explained on the basis of increased concentration of boron at the grain boundaries either with increasing boron content of the material or with increasing temperature. COMMON alloying elements affect both the nucleation and growth rates of the austenite decomposition reactions.' This effect is largely a result of the slow diffusion rates of these elements. Although a small addition of boron markedly increases the hardenability of steel, the diffusion rate of boron, which is of the same order of magnitude as that of carbon, can hardly account for this effect. An addition of boron in the range of 0.001 to 0.003 pct is about as effective as an addition of 0.30 pct Mo, 0.40 pct Cr, or 1.25 pct Ni in increasing the hardenability of a 0.40 pct C steel;' however, increasing the carbon content of the steel decreases the effectiveness of the boron addition."' The difficulty in understanding why so small an addition of boron can replace much larger quantities of the more strategic alloys, together with the erratic behavior sometimes encountered in boron-treated steels, has interfered with their general acceptance by industry. In the belief that an understanding of the mechanism by which boron increases the hardenability of steel should lead to a more general acceptance of boron-treated steels, a research investigation to determine this mechanism was undertaken at Battelle Memorial Institute under sponsorship of Wright Air Development Center. Experimental Work In order to study the effect of boron on the transformation of austenite to ferrite and bainite, a group of steels was made with a basic composition similar to that of the SAE 8600 series. This base composition was chosen because it has sufficient hardenability to permit accurate measurement of the times required for transformation to start at various temperatures. The chemical analyses of the steels used in the first part of this investigation are listed in Table I. These steels were made as 200 lb heats in an induction furnace. The furnace charge was Armco ingot iron with the alloying elements added as ferroalloys. After the alloy additions were made, the heat was deoxidized with 0.125 pct Al. A 100 lb ingot was cast and an addition of 0.003 pct B, as ferroboron, was made to the metal remaining in the furnace. This metal was cast into a second 100 lb ingot. The ingots were forged to 11/4 in. diam bar stock from which end-quench hardenability specimens were obtained. Part of this material was further reduced by hot rolling to lx¼ in. bar stock from which specimens were obtained for isothermal transformation studies. Studies of Nucleation and Growth: End-quench hardenability tests were performed on these steels, using an austenitizing temperature of 1600°F. The hardenability curves, shown in Fig. 1, indicate that boron treatment resulted in considerable increase in hardenability of the steels. Any such change in hardenability must result from a change in the transformation rate of the austenite, and these rate changes can be established readily by isothermal transformation studies. Isothermal transformation studies were conducted on these steels as follows: specimens were austeni-tized at 1600°F for 15 min, transferred to a lead bath operating at a constant subcritical or intercritical temperature, held for various lengths of time, and water quenched. The specimens were sectioned for metallographic examination to determine the amount and the type of transformation products present. In order to determine the effect of boron on the formation rate of ferrite, isothermal transformation tests were made on the 0.20 pct C steel in both the boron-treated and boron-free condition at an intercritical temperature of 1375°F where ferrite is the only decomposition product of this low carbon austenite. The results of these tests are shown in Fig. 2, where the percentage of ferrite formed is plotted as a function of time at temperature. It is apparent that boron markedly decreased the transformation rate of austenite to ferrite at this temperature.

The production of oil during the early development of new oil fields is usually accompanied by large quantities of natural gas. Since in most fields gas under pressure is the main source of the energy causing the oil to move through the sands into the wells and thence to the surface, coincident production of natural gas will continue as long as present-day producing methods are used. Generally the use of this gas is restricted, since markets are not readily available. Consequently, a large portion of the gas produced is often wasted by being blown into the air. The magnitude of gas waste is well brought out in the following statement by Miller: Only a few outstanding examples need be cited to show the enormous production of gas that accompanies the discovery of new sources. In April, 1927, the Ventura field produced approximately 210,000,000 cubic feet of gas a day; and during the summer of 1927 Alamitos Heights reached a peak gas production of 102,000,000 cubic feet a day; on December 1, 1928, as a result of the summer's deeper drilling in the Long Beach field, surplus gas production amounted to 125,000,000 cubic feet a day. It is estimated that in January, 1929, the Santa Fe Springs field will have a daily gas production of 387,000,000 cubic feet from the recently discovered Buckbee oil zone. Of this amount 274,000,000 cubic feet a day will be the surplus above the amount required for field and plant fuel, taken out by utility corporations, and that used in repressuring the Meyer sand which lies above the Buckbee zone. Another example of the waste of large volumes of gas is in the Turner Valley field of Canada, 6 where 250,000,000 cubic feet of gas is being burned daily in flambeaus, as there is no present outlet except at prohibitive cost.

DURING the production of tin plate a thin layer of FeSn2, is formed at the interface between the steel sheet and the protective tin coating. Because excessive amounts of this alloy layer are undesirable, the kinetics of its formation is a subject of interest in the tin-plate industry. A recent study of this subject at our laboratory uncovered a relationship which should be of general interest to anyone studying kinetics of reactions in metallic systems. It had been previously concluded that, at any given temperature in the range 175" to 330°C, the Fe-Sn alloy layer would have a parabolic growth rate.1,2 However, our studies showed that this rule apparently holds only when the tin plate is heated very slowly to the "reaction" temperature; when the tin plate is rapidly heated, considerably different growth rates occur. An example of this effect of heating rate on growth behavior is contained in the accompanying results of alloy-layer growth measurements at 240°C in oil baths stirred at 10,500, 1800, and 0 rpm. The heating curves for these three conditions are given in Fig. 1, and the growth data are presented in Fig. 2. With the rapid heating rate, provided by the stirring at 10,500 rpm, the alloy layer had three distinct stages of growth. In the initial stage, which persisted well beyond the time required to heat the tin plate to bath temperature, the alloy layer formed very rapidly. The growth followed a rate law of the form w = ktn where n > 1. This initial stage was followed by a growth-retardation stage of about 50-sec duration in which little additional alloy was formed. In the third stage the growth again followed a rate law of the form w = ktn, but here « =0.3. With the intermediate heating rate provided by stirring at 1800 rpm, the three-stage nature was less pronounced and the slope of the third stage increased (i.e., n > 0.3). With the slow heating rate provided by the unstirred oil bath, the alloy layer grew in two stages. The initial rapid-growth stage persisted only until the specimen was heated to bath temperature, no growth retardation was observed, and the slope of the main portion of the plotted data was greater than in the stirred baths, having a value of almost 0.5. Similar results were obtained for other bath temperatures in the range 200" to 300°C. This effect of heating rate on growth behavior may be due to changes in the rate of nucleation of FeSn, crystallites. The iron and tin are in contact from the onset of heating. Thus the initial formation of FeSn, occurs not at the "reaction" temperature but rather while the tin plate is being heated to that temperature. Because nucleation is in general temperature-dependent, different heating rates could cause different over-all nucleation rates, which in turn could cause different growth behaviors. A more detailed discussion of the growth of Fe-Sn alloy layer and the effect of heating rate will be published shortly.

"IMBSRE, one of the largest rare earth element (REE) producers in China, produces a rare earth oxide (REO) concentrate as a by-product by floating the middlings stream from a low intensity magnetic separation step in the main iron ore processing stage. As the mine depth has increased, flowsheet changes in the main iron ore circuit have reduced the REO grade and increased the magnetite to REO ratio in the middling product used as flotation feed for the REO circuit. Extensive laboratory work was carried out and identified a new modified hydroxamic acid product, Florrea 8920, that could provide better metallurgical results over the standard hydroxamic acid used as the main collector. This paper briefly reviews the use of hydroxamates in the flotation of oxide minerals, provides detailed information on the different hydroxamates available from Florrea and then provides a case study of the successful implementation of the Florrea 8920 product in a commercial Chinese REE flotation plant. The case study consists of a one year program of pilot plant testing and industrial trials to confirm the results of laboratory tests. The implementation of the new collector resulted in an improvement in grade and recovery to 61% and 64% respectively. The new collector also provided significant economic and environmental benefits.INTRODUCTIONThe flotation of rare earth element (REE) bearing minerals is a topic which has been dominated in the English language literature by the work conducted on the Mountain Pass bastnäsite deposit (Pradip, 1981; Fuerstenau, Pradip, Khan, & Raghavan, 1982; Pradip & Fuerstenau, 1983, 1985, 2013; Fuerstenau & Pradip, 1991; Fuerstenau, Pradip, & Herrera-Urbina, 1992; Herrera-Urbina, Pradip, & Fuerstenau, 2013). By far the most important collector type used for the flotation of rare earth minerals (REM) is hydroxamates. These reagents were initially extensively described as REM collectors in the English literature by Pradip (1981) however they have been successfully applied to numerous other minerals such as: cassiterite (Sreenivas & Padmanabhan, 2002); pyrochlore (Gibson, Kelebek, Aghamirian, & Yu, 2015); hematite, chrysocolla, rhodonite, hubnerite and pyrolusite (Fuerstenau, 2005); and malachite (Lenormand, Salman, & Yoon, 1979) amongst others."

Palabora Mining Copper (PMC) has two autogenous mills that have been in operation since 1976. The mills were originally designed to treat 30 000 t/d of open cast copper ore in a closed circuit with cyclones. As the ore body went deeper the open cast method of mining was changed to block caving, a consequence of this was the dolerite content (hardest barren material) increased significantly, increasing the production rate of pebbles and thus reducing the milling capacity. In order to cope with the increased ore hardness and to increase mill capacity, a second ball milling stage and pebble crushing were incorporated to the circuit. The above actions created new challenges to the circuit operation and bottlenecks in different areas of the milling circuit. This paper reports the holistic work performed on the Palabora autogenous milling circuit including the implementation of a mill constraint control scheme, the implementation of a pebble removal system from the circuit and a new circuit configuration. The achieved plant stability and increment of ore throughput are also reported in this paper.

Extensions to the beneficiation plant at the Grootegeluk Coal Mine are currently being planned in order to provide power station coal for Escom's Matimba Power Station, presently under construction. A simulation model was developed on the Olivetti M-24 microcomputer to facilitate the development of the envisaged flowsheet. The computer program simulates the heavy-medium separation and screening unit operations. The model is based on the construction of the Tromp partition curve described by an arctangent function, allowing ideal and non-ideal separations. The paper discusses the determination of the parameters required by the arctangent curve from standard process parameters such as Epm, Wolf cut-point, Tromp cutpoint and screening efficiency. The accuracy and shortcomings of the model are discussed, while an overview of the application of the model to evaluate borehole and bulk sample analyses is also given. It is concluded that the model is an invaluable aid to general flowsheet development.

This paper, describing the concentrator of the Molybdenum Corporation of America in Taos County, northern New Mexico. 7 miles east of Questa, is one of a series on milling methods being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The mine from which the ore comes is 1 1/4 miles from the mill, and produces about 40 tons of ore per day by the cut-and-fill method.3 The ore contains about 5 per cent of MoS2. The mill has a capacity of 50 tons of ore per day and utilizes flotation methods. Water is taken from Red River. Power is generated by a water wheel, or by a Diesel engine in times of water shortage during the winter. The mill is located close to the bottom of a canyon, in order to obtain maximum head or, the water wheel, and the flow of ore is therefore maintained partly by gravity and partly by an elevator and pumps. ORE TREATED The MoS2 content of the concentrator feed ranges from 4.5 to 7.5 biotite, fluorite, small amounts of rhodochrosite and calcite, and the minerals of the granodiorite country rock.

The haulage of coal from the face to the tipple is an important enough link in the production of coal to deserve its full share of study and care. In order to obtain a better understanding of mine haulage conditions, a series of tests and investigations has been made which promises to hasten the improvement of present conditions. For hauling coal through the mine and on the surface, locomotives are required, the size and power consumption of which depend on the resistance to motion offered by the mine cars. This resistance is principally caused by gravity and bearing friction. The effect of gravity can be reduced to a minimum by a suitable layout of the haulageways; that is, by arranging the grades in favor of the loaded trips, and by fixing the percentage of grade to that value which gives the lowest power consumption for loaded and empty trains. The bearing friction, which is considerably greater than is generally realized, can be easily reduced to a negligible quantity by the installation of a suitable anti-friction bearing that will stand the rough use and abuse of coal-mine service. The present investigation will deal with flexible roller bearings in comparison with ordinary plain bearings. A number of tests for determining train resistance have been run during the last 2 years both in the bituminous and anthracite coal regions. For all these tests the dynamometer car described in a previous paper was used. This car is equipped with recording instruments and is entirely automatic in its operation. It is coupled between the Iocomotive and train, and records the following quantities: drawbar pull in pounds, speed in miles per hour, and a time interval, usually 5 sec.; the paper travel is proportional to the distance covered by the car. With the increasing use of ornamental rocks, mainly in civil construction, sundry problems were identified in relation to rocks cutting, such as efficiency in the cutting process and rock quality lumber. In recent years several composites have been developed to solve these problems. In this context, the study of the binomial matrix metal-diamond interaction is of paramount importance for the development of new composite materials to improve the efficiency of the cutting tool. The diamond impregnated matrix metal often reveals a reaction between the diamond surface and the matrix. Besides the mechanical connection, chemical reactions can sometimes occur. Therefore, this study aims to assess the achievement of diamond composites in the system Fe / Cu / Ni / Sn via powder metallurgy, with added CRB2. Analyzes have been performed to characterize chemical / physical and mechanical. The results have showed that addition of CRB2 promote significant changes in the properties of composites, especially in wear resistance and fracture toughness. Furthermore, the presence of the composite CRB2 causes a significant improvement in thermal stability.

The effect of reheating temperature of slabs on the precipitates dissolution and mechanical properties of Ti-Nb microalloyed steel was investigated in pilot scale. It was verified, by means of transmission electron microscopy, a significant decrease in precipitates formed during the solidification of the steel as the reheating temperature increased from 1100°C to 1200°C. No significant changes in size and shape of the precipitates were observed with further temperature increase up to 1280°C. In line with the precipitates dissolution behavior, an increase in strength was observed with the elevation of the reheating temperature up to 1200°C, due in part to the reprecipitation of fine Nb-rich precipitates during the hot rolling. At 1200°C the presence of deformed ferrite on the microstructure contributed to the additional increase in strength. After reheating above 1200°C up to 1280°C, a decrease in strength of the rolled plates was noticed. This effect has been credited to the absence of deformed ferrite grains and also to a small increase in the low angle grain boundaries size. The results were in agreement with Thermo-Calc and Dictra simulations.
