It is extraordinary that while Australia depends heavily on mineral wealth for its economic well-being, most Australians have no appreciation of the traditions and principles which drive and govern the mineral industry. Their understanding has been largely provided by those who campaign against the industry in one way or another and is therefore quite unrepresentative.

In this study, the performance of a continuous laboratory-scale hindered-settling column was evaluated for various particle systems. In a mass of pyrrhotite-rich ore or tailing, where oxidation heating is not controlled, bonding of particles by diffusional mass transport contributes significantly to the agglomeration of the mass.

The magnetic susceptibilities of samples of natural and artificial hematite and natural goethite were measured by the Faraday method as functions of temperature, magnetizing field strength and particle size. All samples showed weak ferromagnetism, which accounted for large variations in susceptibility with field strength and particle size. Three probable sources of the weak ferromagnetism were identified.

As part of this effort, the standard enthalpy of formation at 298.15 K, ?Hf°, for 2CdO-CdSO4 was determined by HCI acid solution calorimetry to be -345.69 ±0.61 kcal/mol.
