SALT-WATER disposal in the East Texas field by means of injection into the Woodbine sand is a relatively new procedure. The purpose of this paper is to present what has been accomplished to date in this field, with-out detailed discussion of other means of disposal, such as surface impound-ing for evaporation or release into surface streams. Subsurface disposal of salt water is still in an experimental stage in the East Texas field, and, though water can be injected into the Woodbine sand, the economic problem is not as yet solved. As past experience has been that fields producing from the Woodbine formation produce large quantities of salt water, it was assumed early in development of East Texas that it would be necessary to dispose of a tremendous quantity of salt water in the later periods of production. There has been a gradual increase in the amount of salt water pro-duced in the field, until at present it is about 200,000 bbl. per day from approximately 4400 wells. It is only natural to expect an increase in the number of wells producing water, as well as the amount of water produced in the future, and it has been estimated that if present practices con-tinue the production of salt water may ultimately be as much as 700,-000 bbl. per day. The Woodbine sand is found in the East Texas field at an average depth of 3650 ft. The oil-bearing portion of the sand lies between the depths of 3050 ft. below sea level, on the east edge of the field, and 3320 ft. below sea level on the west, which depth was the estimated original average oil-water contact. The Woodbine sand under the field has the form of a broad tilted wedge pinching out on the eastern side of the field and dipping gently into the East Texas Basin toward the west. The Woodbine sand in the East Texas field has an average porosity of approximately 25 per cent and is highly permeable, the average being about 1300 millidarcys.

This paper is not intended to be a technical discussion of square-set framing as used in mines, but merely a short description of the different kinds of framing that have been used in the Butte mines, and what has been decided upon, after years of practical experience, as being the best, taking into consideration the physical condition of the veins and country rock, and also the supply of timber available for mining purposes. Butte is, essentially, a square-set district. Virginia City, Nev., was the first mining camp to use this method of timbering, and to Philip Deidesheimer, who went to the Ophir mine in 1860, is given the credit of solving the problem of square-set framing, where large bodies of ore were stoped and the timbers were supposed to hold the ground from caving without any filling. That he did his work well is shown by the fact that the main features of his framing are in use to-day. In the Butte mines the conditions are such that this method of timbering is generally used. We do not, of course, depend upon the timbers any more than is necessary. The worked-out stopes are filled with waste rock as close behind the miners as possible and not interfere with mining operations. The waste rock is obtained from development work on the different levels or from the surface. In the earlier days of mining in Butte there were numerous independent companies and naturally there were different ideas as to the best way to frame the square sets, although the general features were the same. Timber was abundant for mining purposes and the common practice was to use sawed lumber, generally 10 by 10 in. or 12 by 12 in. square. Some of the mines used for girts 6 by 10 in. or 8 by 12 in. timber, depending upon whether they used 10-in. square or 12-in. square timber for posts and caps. This report presents a structural analysis of the economies of Spokane County, Washington and 21 surrounding counties. An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. The Micro IMPLAN modeling system with the 1990 county database was used to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading industries, with respect to employee compensation, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown (or each county and the region. The total industry output from the Spokane Economic Trade Area (S ETA) region is valued at $22.3 billion. The SETA region provides $7.1 billion in employee compensation to a work force of 374,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total output, employee compensation, and employment. Both Spokane County and the region as a whole produce about 80 percent of total industry output for final demand with the remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. About $7.4 billion of the $22.3 billion SETA output is exported from the region. Spokane County exports about $4.7 billion, or 41 percent of the $11.5 billion Spokane County output. Exports account for more than 50 percent of the total output in 12 of the 22 counties within the region. Based on the output of the top 25 industries in each county and the SETA region about 9 percent of the industry output from Spokane County and 18 percent of the regional industry output come from natural resource based industries. For counties other than Spokane County, total industry' output from natural resource based industries represents from 12 percent to 81 percent of county output from the top 25 industries. Natural resource industries account for more than 50 percent of total county output in 8 counties within the region

Project evaluation is completed through individual studies covering technical and financial aspects of the mine to market. These studies are completed at various levels of detail depending on where the project evaluation is in the project's life cycle. The competency of the studies varies in relation to the quality of data, level of the skills employed, control, management and reporting structure. The focus of this paper is managing elements of the study, looking at the cost of opportunity to influence the project, against the value added. Selection of the study manager and study teams is central to getting an integrated project evaluation addressing the correct issues completed on time. Retention of key personnel can reduce rework which, in turn, can reduce time and cost impacts. It is important to have a work breakdown structure at the outset so that the study teams have a common numbering and naming system that will integrate areas, equipment, budgets estimates and accounts. Having set up the evaluation groups and provided training in the study procedures, understanding the scope and schedule are vital elements in producing a project evaluation that addresses the opportunities and the risks of the final project. Arriving at an accurate capital budget requires integration of the research controlled through common systems. Project evaluation process must also address how the project is to be delivered.

MATTESON, Houston, Tex.-I think that Mr. Powers has given us some very valuable information on the Healdton field, which is of material interest in view of the fact that the Healdton field has passed Cushing in the point of production, and if not leading, stands second only to the new El Dorado field in the point of production of the oil-in this country. Mr. Powers says that the deepest producing sand at Healdton is 1860 ft. Within the last 3 or. 4 months they have drilled to 2700 ft. there and found a sand which is producing very high-grade oil, if I remember correctly, about 42 gravity. Another very important point brought out by Mr. Powers is the fact that the Pennsylvanian beds and the Permian beds are conformable according to his interpretation. He seems to have based his interpretation upon the gathering of a number of well logs and a very careful study of them, but it seems to me the information furnished by the, well logs is really insufficient to justify such an important conclusion. In the first place, the difficulty of interpreting the line of demarcation between the Permian "Red Beds" of Oklahoma and the top of the Pennsylvanian is apparent, for the reason that sometimes the uppermost Pennsylvanian formation has a reddish phase and the line of demarcation is not very sharp.

This paper is devoted to give a review of the current status quo of the discussion. It describes the achievements of the mineral industries on their progress towards sustainable development since the Milos Conference (SDIMI 2003), but also discusses future challenges and obstacles."

For instance, instead of using the terms descending and ascending &th reference to the waters resulting in the two concentrations, my modified statement is as follows: " The first concentration of many ore-deposits is the work of a relatively deep water-circulation, while the reconcentration is the result of reactions upon an earlier concentration through the agency of a relatively shallow water-circulation. Commonly the deep water-circulation is lacking in free oxygen, and contains reducing agents, and the shallow water contains free oxygen. The character of the slag is the determining factor in the character of the pig iron as to the controllable limits of sulfur, silicon, and, to a certain extent, the manganese; it has an influence on the proportions of combined and graphitic carbons.

In the early part of the last century textile fabric was used for the filtration of products of combustion and lampblack was obtained by passing smoke through a series of canvas bags. Natural draft was used to draw and force the smoke through the bags. About 1850 bag filtration was used for collecting zinc oxide. Around 1876 it was introduced for collecting the fume from lead-ore hearth smelting in Missouri. Shortly afterward it was used, first at Portland, Me., and later at Canon City, Colo., for the collection and production of zinc-lead pigment in treating mixed zinc-lead sulphides. In 1890 the Globe Smelting & Refining Co., at Denver, Colo., installed a bag house containing 1,458 bags for the recovery of fume from silver-lead blast furnaces. This installation was too small to handle all of the gases and was increased to approximately 2,300 bags. In 1900 the number of bags was again increased, making a total of approximately 2,800. The usual difficulties incident to new installations were encountered, but they were gradually overcome and the bag house became accepted as standard practice for this class of smelting, As all of the bag houses built since have followed the general lines of the Globe installation, a short description may be of interest. The general construction of the Globe bag house is shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The building is 149 ft. 8 in. long by 67 ft. 4 in. wide and 40 ft. 2 in. high from the basement floor to the eaves of the roof, having brick walls 26 in. thick from the foundation up to the thimble floor, from there an 18-in. wall for 16 ft. and a 13-in. wall from this point to the top, a distance of 14 ft. 2 in. Additional stiffening is given to the walls above the basement by pilasters located every 16 ft. The end-wall construction is similar to that of the side walls with the exception of the spacing of the pilasters, which is somewhat greater. The roof is made of corrugated iron laid on 1-in. boards and supported by a timber frame work spaced 16 ft. apart resting on the basement partition walls. On top is a louver running the

"In the civil tunnelling field, the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM) has now overtaken the use of conventional excavation methods (drill and blast / roadheader). This is due to a number of reasons, including the increasing availability and reliability of TBMs, the ability to deal with a wider range of face conditions, and the reduced excavation cost that TBMs can bring.Mining companies have spearheaded the advances in shaft boring by mechanised means, both in blind and raise boring. However, mining companies have been slower to adopt mechanised tunnelling.When contrasted with a conventional mining contract, there are good reasons why TBMs in mining applications are relatively rare. A conventional decline contract may have very little geotechnical information. The decline alignment can be subject to change as the tunnelling progresses. The infrastructure requirements are less for a conventional decline, and the sunk cost prior to excavation commencing is lower. Contract documents can be very simple.The history of TBM use in mining is reviewed and lessons are described. From the case histories and lessons learnt, the paper identifies ways that mining companies can maximise the potential benefit of TBM technology.We believe that despite the additional requirements for TBM declines, the cost and time advantage to mining companies is very attractive. The challenge is to recognise and to meet the requirements for success in a TBM drive to achieve the advantages of: faster advance rates reduced rock damage/overbreak reduced support requirements uniform muck characteristics greater personnel safety.From the case histories and lessons learnt, the paper identifies ways that mining companies can maximise the potential benefit of TBM technology.CITATION:Asche, H R and Mather, D, 2014. A complete swies of solid solutions has been found between the compounds InAs and GaAs Below the solidus. The melting relations determined by differential thermal and static quenching technzques, indicate that the liquidus and solidus are of the simple ascendant type. No evidence of unmixing of the homogeneous solid solutions was observed at sub-solidus temperatures. A quenching method for locnting the solidus, using X-ray diffraction techniques, is described in some detail. THE semi-conducting properties of compounds formed by various combinations of the less familiar intermetallic elements have created an increasing interest in the phase relations in systems involving these elements. The complete phase diagram of such a system, containing a compound of special interest, will often provide information as to the most favorable conditions for preparing large crystals from a melt, as well as specifying the temperature stability of the crystalline phase or phases produced. In view of the current importance of gallium arsenide in semiconductor research and of the structural similarities of indium arsenide, it was thought that the complete phase relations of the system InAs-GaAs should be investigated. Previous work on the system Ga-As by Koster and homa' and on In-As by Liu and peretti2 has shown that GaAs and InAs are the only compounds formed, having melting points of 1238° and 942°C, respectively. In a survey of various systems of elements from groups IIIb and Vb, spengler3 also re- Mines Ltd., for his continuing encouragement and for permission to publish the results of this work. ports complete miscibility of gallium, indium, and arsenic in the liquid state. In a partial investigation of the InAs-GaAs system, Woolley and smith4 found extensive solid solution throughout the alloy range. Their subsolidus work, however, was inconclusive at temperatures below 900" and they did not determine the liquidus relationships of the system. PRESENT INVESTIGATION The starting materials used were high-purity gallium, indium, and arsenic. The method of preparation of the compounds follows that devised by M. Shafer and is described in detail in a paper by Shafer and eiser.' The end-member compounds, GaAs and InAs, were first prepared by reaction of the elements in the desired proportions in evacuated silica glass vials. The vials were rotated in a furnace as the temperature was slowly raised to insure rapid and complete reaction at low temperatures. Thereafter the starting materials, GaAs and InAs, were melted by heating the sealed vials to 1300" and 1000°C, respectively; the vials in this case were filled as completely as possible to keep the vapor space small and thereby minimize the loss of arsenic to the vapor phase. Ten binary mixtures of these compounds were then prepared by reaction of the powdered material in the solid state just below solidus temperatures. At 900C preparations containing 3, 5, 8, 10, 25, 35, 50, and 75 mol pct GaAs were found to be single homogeneous phases, indicating a complete series of solid solutions between GaAs and InAs. Moreover, it was discovered that the homogeneity of any crystalline binary preparation could be very accurately checked by X-ray diffraction because of the large differences in unit cell dimensions of the end membe5s. The deleterious effect on the mechanical properties of copper, resulting from heating in contact with reducing gases, is well known, but the mechanism of the action does not appear to have been definitely established. The purpose of the present investigation was not to determine the exact variations in physical quality of commercial copper, with its various impurities, as dependent upon the composition of the gas, temperature of exposure, etc., but rather to study the nature of the action and the conditions under which it occurs. The physical result of the so-called "gassing." of copper has been generally described as the development of "brittleness." There appears to be a striking decrease in tensile strength, associated with a considerable loss of ductility, and a small copper strip or wire affected in this way can he snapped in two when bent. Larger articles may have an outer layer alone affected, which can be detached from the core by hammering or bending. Perhaps the earliest reference to this subject is that of Heyn1 in 1900, and among the later observers may be mentioned Archbutt,2 Bengough and Hill,3 Johnson,4 Mathewson and Thalheimer,5 and Ruder .6 Bengough and Hill, while working with arsenical copper, were the first to suggest the possibility of the formation of gases within the copper itself, while Ruder endeavored to explain the action by the reduction of the

"The following paper focuses on the developing relationship between the members of theInternational Society of Explosive Engineers (ISEE), and the mining students from the BritishColumbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). During the past two years mining students and theISEE members have worked closely in developing a student chapter within the society and onFebruary 1st 2015, the first Canadian Student Chapter was recognized at the annual generalmeeting in New Orleans. This paper discusses the benefits that both the industry and studentsgain with a strong relationship. The mining students recognize the importance for filling the rolesof retiring members of the society and industry. Prior to 2015 the school had only offered a twoyear diploma program in mining and mineral exploration methods. That included a brief sectionin the use of explosives in the mining industry. In September of 2015 students were recruited forthe first ever Bachelors in Mining and Mineral Resource Engineering program. This engineeringdegree includes a full four month course in advanced blasting and rock fragmentation. Studentssuccessfully completing the diploma program will have an entry level of technical understandingin how blasting is conducted. The students successfully completing the bachelor degree will havean in depth technical understanding of explosives and rock fragmentation. Having this uniqueand dynamic multi-level program provides the explosives industry with a pool of talent that canbe used to fill positions with graduates for all levels of the blasting industry."

The accident-prevention record of the coal-mining industry in the United States was more favorable in 1936 than in 1935, both from the standpoint of the relative safety of the individual miner on the job and of the price in life and limb that the Nation paid for its year's supply of coal. The increase in relative safety of the individual miner was indicated by a lower death rate and a lower injury rate than in the preceding year per million man-hours of exposure to the hazards of mining; that is, per million hours of work performed by the employees. (See table 1.) A reduction in the price in life and limb that the Nation paid for a year's supply of coal was indicated by a smaller death rate and a smaller injury rate per million tons of coal produced. Thus the individual miner was a better insurance risk, as far as accidents were concerned, in 1936 than in 1935, and a ton of coal used in the homes and industries of the country represented less human suffering than in 1935. The two points of view are distinct, and both should be kept in mind when considering accidents and safety in coal mining or in other industries. More men were employed in 1936 than in 1935, and more workdays were available for the individual miner. Large gains were also made in the total number of man-shifts and man-hours worked in the industry as a whole. In number of tons of coal mined, 1936 showed large gains over 1935. Moreover, the average output of coal per man-hour worked was higher in 1936 than in 1935. All of these gains were made without lengthening the average number of hours of work per man per day.

1. INTRODUCTION 1. Location, Topography, and Climate The Burro Mountains are located in the southwestern part of New Mexico, in Grant County. The group is made up of two distinct moun-tain masses, known as the Little Burros and the Big Burros, the former lying about 6 miles southwest of Silver City-, and the latter about 9 miles farther in the same direction. They are separated by the valley of the Mangas River, a tributary of the Gila, and a stream only in name, except after a heavy down-pour of rain. . The Little Burros attain an elevation of 6,625 ft. above sea level, and the Big Burros 8,054 ft., with the surrounding country averaging about 6,000 ft. To the south of these mountains stretches the desert plain, while to the north are the more frequent elevations of the mountainous country.

PRIOR to June, 1937, the employees of Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Ltd., at Timmins, Ontario, received medical care for themselves under a contract system developed through an agreement between the employer, employee, and a contract physician. This form of practice is common to the mining industry in Ontario. But with the improvement in mining methods and conditions of living, and through an increasing demand for provision of a complete medical care, it was not any surprise when the employees of the Hollinger mine approached organized medicine and indicated their desire for a plan to provide their families with a more or less complete medical service in addition to that supplied for themselves. In April, 1937, this approach was made, and on June 18th, 1937, the Hollinger Employees' Medical Services Association was formed and started to provide medical services. A review of five years' experience is now presented. The Association provides complete medical service for the employee, his wife and family, as well as those dependents who are the total responsibility of the employee. The employee membership is limited to employees at the Hollinger mine in Timmins who reside in the immediate vicinity. The employee is examined by a Company doctor on application for employment and is subject to further examination by a specialise in chest diseases under the direction of the Workmen's Compensation Board of Ontario. The wife and family are not subject to examination but have to be registered when the employee is accepted for employment. The dependents, other than the immediate family, are subject to medical examination and approval after the employee has applied for such dependent or dependents to be admitted. Membership in the Association is obligatory when the employee is hired, but at the end of any Association year he may drop out if he so wishes.

IN 1880, the late James Douglas, LL.D., was superintendent of the Chemical Copper Co., operating the Hunt & Douglas process for the treatment of the siliceous copper ores of the Jones mine at Phoenixville, Pa. In conjunction with this a refining furnace was operated. After correspondence with Ben Williams, of Bisbee Ariz., who was commencing the mining and smelting of the Copper Queen ore. Dr. Douglas decided-to make his first journey to Arizona. While making plans for the trip lie visited a friend in Philadelphia, a .Mr. Logan, a prominent lawyer. He, through Professor Treadwell, brother of the discoverer of the great Treadwell gold mine of Douglas Island, Alaska, had an option with his min¬ing partner, Mr. Lenig, on the Eureka and Wade Hampton claims near the headwaters of the Verde River in Yavapai County, Arizona. These two claims, later the source of practically all of the wealth of the Jerome district, were then owned by C. P. Head and Co. Prescott merchants. Hugo Richards, banker, and formerly sutler at Camp Apache; Rod and John McKinnon prospectors and Nova Scotians; and perhaps one or two 'other owners of minor interests. Mr. Logan, hearing of Dr. Douglas intended trip to Bisbee, asked him to go first to see the two mining prospects, and this, Douglas, in need of the $500 fee, agreed to do as the time on the option on the claims was running short.

The worldwide implementation of corrosion protection of low alloyed automotive metal sheets by zinc coating has led to supply shortages of zinc free non-alloyed steel scrap in the foundry industry. In a collaboration project, partly financed by the German government, with partners from the automotive industry, zinc metallurgy, scrap trading, foundry industry, and plant construction, a new acid-based pre-dezincification process has been developed, and a pilot plant with throughput of about 100 t/d has been put into operation at the Clausthal Umwelt-Institut GmbH (CUTEC) together with the Clausthal University of Technology in Germany. During the treatment process, acid from a zinc metallurgical plant will be supplied, which can be recycled to the primary zinc extraction process after raising the zinc concentration to more than 130 g/L zinc. This way, the separation of small amounts of iron by precipitation and the electrolytic zinc winning are outsourced and, as a result, the pre-dezincification process runs waste-free. In Germany, the amount of zinc coated ?new scrap? is approx. 3 million t per year with a zinc content of approximately 60,000 t per year. The possible additional incomes for the dezincified steel scrap are in the order of ?40 to ?50 per ton of scrap, the gained zinc content during the acid dezincification defrays the costs of the process, if the throughput is more than 700 t/d. In comparison to conventional dezincification during the electro arc furnace process followed by upgrading in a rotary kiln (Waelz process), the acid dezincification process running at a maximum of 50°C will cut the energy costs by up to 74% and the CO2 emission by up to 88%. In fact, a demonstration plant is being designed right now and will be installed for processing a part of the zinc coated metal scrap from the Volkswagen AG in Wolfsburg, Germany.
