On July 1, the Bonneville Power Administration announced a 25% power cutback because of lower than normal stream flow. In September, the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) announced plans to shut down one 23,000-ton-per-year potline at its Vancouver, Wash., primary aluminum smelter. Alcoa also announced that the last of four potlines at its Point Comfort, Tex., primary aluminum smelter would be restarted in October. A new 3-year contract was signed and workers at three Alcan Aluminum Ltd. primary aluminum smelters in Canada returned to work. It was estimated that it would take about 3 months before the smelters were operating at full capacity.

In the east of Frankfurt am Main, Germany, a new high-rise building is planned directly next to the river Main. The high-rise building will have a height of about 75 m and will be founded on a Combined Pile-Raft Foundation (CPRF) in the tertiary marl. The new structure will be constructed next to important, sensitive traffic infrastructure. The foundation of the new high-rise building adjoins directly existing historic quay structures, which are more than 100 years old. For analysis of the stability and the serviceability of the heavily eccentric loaded foundation of the new high-rise building and the existing structures and for the investigation of the soil-structure interaction complex three dimensional, non-linear numerical simulations have been carried out. These numerical simulations take into account all geometric and material specific boundary conditions, including the history of the construction of the whole area. The paper introduces into a very complex construction project in which the investigation of the soil-structure interaction has an important role. The three-dimensional numerical simulations are explained and the results are shown.

The present trend toward concentration of mining activities into fewer sections of a coal mine and application of automation and remote control technologies favor utilization of the longwall mining method. Longwall mining also offers the potential for improving safety and productivity, better ground control and higher levels of recovery. The production potential of a longwall operation is determined by the interaction of several factors including the rate of face advance, the thickness of extraction, the speed of cutting and hauling equipment, the physical dimensions of a longwall panel, and the reliability and availability of the equipment. Some of these factors are dictated by the environment in which the extraction process is to be undertaken. Some other factors, however, can be manipulated in order to optimize the production of the system. The objective of this paper is to develop a stochastic model to simulate the production operations in longwall mining. The activities and parameters that affect the production potential of the longwall operations and the relationships between the activities are identified. An attempt is made to verify these relationships through the use of existing data. The model is then used as a computer simulator to investigate the effects of various activities and parameters on the production capacity of a panel.

"Dust generated on underground mechanized coal mining faces is a health and safety hazard. Continuous miners deployed underground usually have an integrated flooded-bed dust scrubber mounted onto the machine that arrests the generated dust from close to the face and cleanses the air around it. However, the impingement screen might get clogged depending on the coal seam being worked. This necessitates the cleaning of the screen which in turn, reduces the overall availability of the scrubber and, hence the continuous miner. A novel non-clogging screen has been developed at the Department of Mining Engineering, University of Kentucky. The proposed impingement screen is built up of three individual aluminum screen units 1.5 mm thick and separated by 3 and 2 mm respectively. The screens have long vertical slits measuring 6 mm. A water spray continuously keeps the screen wet and provides for the filter element to arrest the dust particles. The slits force the dust-laden air to make sharp turns. The dust particles cannot change directions rapidly, impact one of the three screens and are separated out based on their momentum. Preliminary computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models have indicated significant cleaning efficiencies in the respirable range at the expense of much lower pressure drops. Results indicated by CFD models and supported by laboratory experiments have been discussed in this paper.ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The authors acknowledge the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for funding this research. The miners are operated against bling headings, ensuring adequate flow of air at the face could be difficult. The minimum requirement of ventilation airflow quantities at those coal faces are legislated to dilute dust generated to harmless levels. New dust rules promulgated recently have further called for lower exposure levels of personnel working underground (Courtney) (MSHA, 2014) (NIOSH, 2010). Water sprays are also installed at strategic locations and serve as powerful air-movers. The sprays capture some amount of dust generated while cutting. In addition to this, usually, all continuous miners are equipped with a flooded-bed dust scrubber as shown in Figure 1 to capture the dust from close to the extraction drum (Chao & De-sheng, 2000) (Wala, Vytla, Huang, & Taylor, 2008) (Organiscak & Beck, 2010)."

The concept of "heat recuperation" for the grate-kiln pelletizing system was first implemented at the Sydvaranger plant in Norway in 1974. Essentially, heat recuperation involves bringing hot air from the second stage of the pellet cooler to the drying zone to increase drying-air temperature to the maximum limit. 'Burner-fuel savings result from a lower kiln secondary-air mass flow at a higher temperature. Because of the fuel benefits achieved at Sydvaranger, heat recuperation has been included innumerous new grate-kiln plants built since then, and some older plants have been retrofitted for heat recuperation. In recent years there has been much confusion about the fuel benefits of heat recuperation. To answer some of the questions, a mathematical model was developed and plant tests were conducted at Minntac Phase 111. Minntac is a magnetite taconite concentrating and pelletizing plant, and Phase III has two indurating lines. This paper presents the results of the studies and plant tests.

During the 20th century, the increased emphasis on worker health and safety and the advent of new mining equipment and methods led to many changes in mine face ventilation practices. Efforts by government and private industry to improve and modify ventilation practices resulted in better health and safety conditions for workers. This article focuses on U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research to examine factors that had a significant influence on mine face ventilation design during the past century. Several "milestone" events are discussed along with the impact they had on worker health and safety. Significant ventilation research efforts by government and private industry are presented. This brief ventilation history highlights innovative face ventilation designs and a consistent commitment to mining health and safety. Ventilation has always been a concern in underground coal mining. For many yeas, there was no appreciation of how ventilation could be used to remove harmful contaminants from the air or how to control airflow quantities. The first known problems with ventilation date back to the 14th century, when it was recognized that lack of air was a major impediment to the expansion of mines. The common method of solving ventilation problems at that time was to abandon the existing mine and start a new one nearby. Ventilation in the early days of coal mining was accomplished by means of a natural draft, created principally by a difference in the weights of columns of air between the intake and return openings. Later, in the 18th and 19th centuries, a furnace was introduced underground to increase the updraft in the return shaft. This allowed for a larger quantity of air in circulation. When mines went deeper and became larger, mechanical ventilation became necessary and was first accomplished by steam-driven fans. These fans became more prevalent as furnaces were prohibited in underground mines, especially after the Avondale disaster in Pennsylvania in 1869 (Roy, 1876). "Deep Mixing Method (DMM) for the Rio Puerto Nuevo Project (Project) in San Juan was chosen by the Corps of Engineers to improve the soils adjacent to a 92 inch ID forced sewer main relocation and to improve the soils for the base of a new drainage channel. The soils to be improved consisted of sandy fill, soft clays, organics and stiff, plastic clays. A pre-construction soil investigation campaign, followed by a Bench Scale Mixing Programme and a Full Scale Field Test were performed during the pre-construction stage to assess soil properties, select binder type and dosage, and disclose the most suitable combination of injection parameters to improve the different soil layers. Production started at the end of August 2012 and was completed in October 2013; over 3,000 DMM elements were installed to a maximum depth of 57 ft below ground for a total gross volume of approximately 125,000 cubic yard. Each element consisted of two 5.5 ft diameter overlapping columns installed simultaneously, and their layout was such to meet the 100% Area Replacement Ratio required by the design. The ground improvement was successfully completed despite some difficulties due to a considerable amount of obstructions. Wet grab sampling and UCS testing of the retrieved specimens were designed as the main QC/QA method for the verification of the quality of the ground improvement. Upon completion of production, approximately 3,000 specimens were cast. The contract also required continuous coring of at least 12 randomly selected DMM elements and the testing of 8 cored specimens per bore for strength assessment. This paper will illustrate means and methods used in the field to construct the designed ground improvement and the results of the QC/QA program, with a focus on the differences between wet grab and coring sampling methods.INTRODUCTIONThe Rio Puerto Nuevo project involved the stabilization of a major drainage channel using the Deep Mixing Method (DMM), and the relocation of a 92 inch ID forced main sanitary sewer outfall. Previously, in 2004, a 40 x 16 x 2,000 ft. box culvert was installed under a different contract to convey runoff waters to the ocean.However, the connection between this culvert and the upstream network of channels was not constructed due to the presence of the forced main sewer pipe. In order for the drainage system to be completed and function properly, the 92 inch ID forced main needed to be lowered about 20 ft to allow for proper drainage.DMM was chosen by the US Army Corps of Engineers to stabilize the drainage channel as well as improve the soil under the relocated sewer main. The DMM was arranged in different zones (A through E) with variable top and bottom design elevations as can be seen in the typical cross section for Zone A (deeper and with a higher strength requirement) and Zone B as an example (Figure 1)."

This information circular presents data for 1960 on individual coke plants in the United States. All oven-coke plants in existence, whether active or idle at the close of the year, are listed in this report. With two exceptions, only beehive plants on which reports were submitted to the Bureau of Mines are included. Although the Bureau was unable to obtain reports from these two active plants in 1960, the number of ovens and annual coke capacity are estimates, based on previous reports filed with the Bureau of Mines. Accordingly, there were 73 oven-coke plants in existence at the end of 1960 of which 70 were active. Reports were received on 44 beehive plants of which only 13 were in operation at year end. Oven-coke plants are listed alphabetically by States in table 1 which shows the name and address of the company, location of plant, classification or type of ownership, number and type of ovens, annual coke capacity, and coal-chemical materials produced. The terms "furnace" and "merchant" plants used in this and all other reports of the Bureau of Mines designate the type of ownership. Furnace plants are those owned by iron and steel companies whose main business is production of coke for use in their own blast furnaces. Merchant plants are those associated with chemical companies, gas utilities, as well as those that produce for sale on the open market metallurgical, industrial, and residential-heating grades of coke and coal-chemical materials. The annual coke capacity shown for each plant in this table is based on the minimum coking time necessary to produce coke with qualities suitable for its intended use. Therefore, the annual capacity of a plant may change from year to year, depending on age and condition of ovens, the character and quality of coal carbonized, the grade of coke required, and other factors. For example, annual coke capacity of a coke plant primarily making foundry coke with longer coking cycles would be lower than one making blast-furnace coke. Also some ovens must be operated at slightly lower than normal flue temperature because of the condition of the refractories and maximum capacity would be somewhat lower than designed capacity. For this reason, the capacity reported to the Bureau of Mines may differ from the designed or rated capacity estimated by the coke-oven builders at the time of construction. For example, if the generally accepted standard coking rate of one inch per hour were used on all ovens to calculate total annual capacity, it would have been 80.4 million tons or 2 percent higher than the capacity reported to the Bureau. Because of the factors mentioned above, the annual coke capacity shown in this table is believed to be a reliable measure of the practical operating capacity of the industry.

SO many variations of lead-zinc ores occur in nature that it is impossible to state any rules that will apply to the concentration of ores of this type. Some have lead and zinc in approximately equal amounts; others may have pre- dominant amounts of one or the other metal. There are gradations from all sulfide to completely oxidized minerals. Some such ores carry little pyrite, others contain much more pyrite than they do lead and zinc combined. The behavior of ores in flotation is largely a function of their lead-zinc ratios. their content of pyrite or pyrhotite, the nature of existing soluble salt conditions, the character of the gangue constituents: and the speed with which the minerals float. For the purposes of this paper only those lead-zinc ores handled commonly in present-day flotation practice will be considered. These are practically all-sulfide ores with relatively minor degrees of sulphatization or oxidation.

Gold was determined directly in eight different mill cyanide solutions, by atomic absorption spectroscopy in an acetylene-air flame. Some of the mill solutions were diluted with water to bring them into the most sensitive absorption region (5-50 p.p.m. Au) whereas those solutions with very low gold content «2 p.p.m.) were concentrated by evaporation.Calcium was complexed with ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) to avoid the undesirable effect of a precipitate on atomization.When added to standard gold solutions, EDTA had no effect on absorption, nor did any of the impurities common in mill cyanide solutions.Known amounts of gold, ranging from 2 to 30 p.p.m., were added to mill solution'aliquots and recovered to within 100 ± 2·5 per cent. Like most minerals, coal is inherently a demand-limited commodity. The very sedimentary nature of its occurrence implies greater availability potential than demand. But this situation is overridden by economics among fuels, between coals, and within coal blends. Such considerations make coal forecasting a very hazardous profession indeed. THERMAL COAL If one thought that the lead times involved with a mining project were very long, one has obviously not been exposed to the planning process in the electric generation business - a process seriously confounded by shifts in load growth, environmental pressures, capital intensity, security of fuel sourcing, inter-fuel economics, and so on. But as a general rule, the near-term forecasts for thermal coal can reliably be based on a bottom-up, plant-by-plant analysis. Cement plant conversions can also be reasonably estimated next in order of reliability, although they have a much wider spectrum of coal qualities and fuel sources to choose from with a notably higher tolerance for sulfur and ash. Finally, industrial demand can be assembled from the estimates for conversions by pulp/paper plants, chemical plants, etc. The industrial sector is harder to estimate, since it may involve small boilers or dual-fired units. Assessing demand in the Pacific Rim is relatively a straightforward process in the near term because the major importing countries are all located on the Asian continent with either negligible or very minor (yet stable) indigenous coal production, (itself often operated on a subsidized basis). Furthermore, all imports are seaborne. These major importers are Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong with Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia up-and-coming consumers. The suppliers to this market all have substantial reserves to back up decades of exports to these countries. Australia, the US, Canada, South Africa, China, and the USSR dominate the supply side. The second oil-shock of 1979/1980 has convinced the importers that reliance on oil can be expensive and eminently interruptible. Thus, they are determined to diversify away from oil' to nuclear and coal for generating electricity and for coal for other purposes where possible. This trend is seen to continue even in the face of the oil glut worldwide and oil-price reductions in early 1982. But the importers are also convinced that reliance on one coal source and, in particular, one infrastructure route for the coal chain from mine to consumer can be equally expensive and interruptible. Strikes in the US and Australia; excessive demurrage at certain ports; relegation of coal to a lower priority on multiple-use railroads in the USSR and China; and concern over escalation on high-infrastructure or high-freight coal chains are among the risks worrying the importers. As a consequence, Pacific Rim thermal coal purchases are being allocated among supplier nations, between ports, and within each country. An example of Japan's shift away from Australia and toward the US and Canada is shown in the estimates in Table 1. But the confidence of the import estimates deteriorates sharply beyond the plant conversion timetables and construction schedules in the near term. If part of the second generation of coal-fired power plants can handle lower-energy coals, the field of suppliers could widen to accept sizeable tonnages from Alaska, Wyoming, Alberta, or New Zealand resources. These supply sources generally have some infrastructure or freight advantage to compensate for their lower quality and to compete on a delivered energy-unit basis. These also offer diversification in sourcing. And the possibility of coal liquefaction in Japan further widens the sourcing network. A great number of Pacific Rim coal forecasts have been generated, especially for Japanese thermal-coal imports which are expected to grow strongly in the 1980's. Since the Japanese themselves have not yet settled their energy policy, the exact numbers are hard to call. Nevertheless, at 50 million tonnes of imports in 1990, Japan would consume 50-60% of the total Asian thermal coal imports as shown on Tables 2 and 6. The next most important consumers are the "island" nations of Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong (see Tables 3-5). All three are embarking on power plant developments usually with captive unloading facilities, capable of accepting more than 100,000-dwt vessels. Korea, with no-indigenous bituminous coal, is not especially enamoured with US coals, which are deemed too heavily loaded by freight and infrastructure costs -- up to 70% of the delivered price. Thermal coal contracts are presently split to Australia (70%) and to Canada (30%). Korea Electric Power Co. is already considering second-generation boilers capable of burning lower-quality coals than the present standard. Korea does burn domestic anthracite.

Modern microprocessor systems make it possible to use several variables to anticipate changes in the process and to react with responses before upsets can be magnified by the process or by control action. Through tighter control, "insurance" can be eliminated from process set points without affecting product quality. In actual operation with a traveling grate furnace this control philosophy has produced savings of up to 20% in fuel consumption and 8% in fan power usage while producing a more consistent quality product.

"We review the application of advanced numerical techniques such as adaptive mesh refmement, implicit time-stepping, multigrid solvers and massively parallel implementations as a route to obtaining solutions to the 3-dimensional phase-field problem with a domain size and interface resolution previously possible only in 2-dimensions. Using such techniques it is shown that such models are tractable even as the interface width approaches the solute capillary length.IntroductionMulti-scale modelling impinges upon many areas of science, engineering and technology where the interplay between processes occurring on disparate length and/or timescales can affect the properties of systems in a complex, and sometimes unforeseen, manner. One such is the processing of materials where interactions at the atomic scale, through the nano- and microstructural scale can have a profound affect on the macro-scale response of engineering components. Here we focus on one such problem, the crystallisation of alloy melts, to illustrate how a range of advanced numerical techniques make the modelling of such systems tractable.The modelling of solidification structures, in particular the growth of dendritic crystals, is a subject of intense and enduring interest within the scientific community, both because dendrites are a prime example of spontaneous pattern formation and they have a pervasive influence on the engineering properties of metals. For alloy systems, which form the vast majority of engineering materials, solidification involves the rejection of both solute and latent heat from the growing solid, forming a coupled diffusion problem in which both the chemical and thermal diffusion equations should be solved. The multi-scale nature of this problem arises from the disparity between the thermal and solutal diffusivities for most liquid metals, which are typically 10-5 m2 s-1 and 10-9 m2 s-1 respectively. The ratio of these two, referred to as the Lewis number (Le =Dia), is therefore typically of the order 10,000 and gives a measure of the multi-scale nature of the problem. In fact, in many cases the thermal diffusivity is so much larger than its solutal counterpart that thermal diffusion is considered instantaneous, wherein the system can be approximated as isothermal such that the multi-scale calculation does not need to be performed. This is certainly a reasonable approach in most conventional castings. However, there is a class of solidification problem in which this approach is far from satisfactory, namely Rapid Solidification (RS). The application of isothermal phase-field models in such situations are highly likely to produce spurious results or to fail totally, particularly for temperatures below To (the temperature at which the free energies of the solid and liquid phases are equal at the concentration of the bulk alloy), wherein partitionless solidification may occur."

Methanometers with catalytic heat- of-combustion sensors used in coal mines today will read low for flammable gases when oxygen (0,) concentrations are low or when methane (CH,) concentrations are greater than 10%. Thus, these methanometers may not be reliable during operations such as fire fighting or recovery of sealed mines. The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed a total flammable gas detector (TFGD) to measure CH, at concentrations up to 100% and to measure flammable gases in low 0, concentrations. This paper describes the operation and construction of the TFGD and discusses measurements of flammable mine gases obtained from a mine in western Pennsylvania.

Commercially silica is used in many ways , but ordinary uses of sand and gravel are so well known that they will not be considered here .

Additionally, for this year 2024, the project development and implemented an interactive mobile application that educates users about the use of minerals in everyday life through four levels: Minerals in the Home, Minerals in Medicine, Minerals in Transportation, and Minerals in Agriculture. This multi-faceted approach seeks to raise awareness about the importance of mining in Peru’s economic, environmental, and social development, ultimately fostering a new generation of informed and engaged citizens who understand the vital role of mining in a sustainable future.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research that will lead to computer-assisted mining equipment. This research will facilitate improvements in safety by relocating workers from dangerous areas and will increase production by providing more accurate control with less downtime of equipment. A Bureau-developed microcomputer network enhances this research by permitting a group of diverse computers to interact with a mining machine as well as with each other over a common data link. The network is composed of specially integrated off-the-shelf hardware and industry-standard operating system and programming languages. Using the network, researchers can conduct various experiments with the mining machine using a diverse group of sensors, computers, and micro controllers. This report gives a brief background on the Bureau's work in computer-assisted mining, followed by discussions on the network hardware and architecture and the network packets, and an analysis of network operation.

BECAUSE of the wide-spread publicity given to Nylon yarn as being made from ?coal, air, and water,? the general public has become conscious of the nonfuel uses of bituminous coal. Some of these uses are as filler for fertilizer, carbon for the absorption of orders, for water supply, and for the bedding of cattle. Spectacular as are these accomplishments the fact is that only a small amount of coal is used for nonfuel purposes. It is on the utilization of coal as fuel that the industry depends. Practically all the coal mines for years to come will be used for making coke for the generation of heat. Recently much attention has been paid to the significance of ash in coal. Another study worthy the interest of metallurgists in the iron and steel industries if that of Dr, Lowry of the Carnegie Institute of Technology relative to the percentage of sulphur in coal and coke.

Iron Ore Holdings Ltd (IOH) is an emerging junior iron ore company that is actively developing projects in the Central and Western Pilbara region of Western Australia. IOH commissioned URS Australia Pty Ltd (URS) in mid-2008 to prepare environmental assessment documents for the Phil’s Creek Project, which was rapidly moving into the development phase. This project comprised a small open cut iron ore mine that was expected to deliver approximately seven million tonnes over a five year mine life.IOH faced several challenges in the environmental assessment process for the Phil’s Creek Project. Although the Phil’s Creek Project attained approval but has now been placed on hold, it is a useful case study to discuss these challenges and how IOH addressed them. Several important lessons were learned through this process that can assist other proponents in addressing environmental challenges in a constructive and proactive manner.One major challenge faced by IOH related to the endangered northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus). Another challenge was the unusually high species richness of troglofauna recorded within the project area, with several species initially known only from within the proposed pit footprint.Meeting and overcoming these challenges has provided IOH with an increased understanding of the level of input required for consultation with government departments regarding environmental assessments, and this should stand the company in good stead for developing future tenements. Challenges in regards to the environmental assessment process may be faced during future developments, but IOH’s experiences to date and the lessons learned from the Phil’s Creek Project, will help pave the way for successfully overcoming them.
