PT Kaltim Prima Coal?s 13.1 km overland conveyor (OLC) was commissioned in 1991. It is of conventional 3 roller 350 trough belt type. Cost and performance optimization during initial design ended up with 5.4 mps belt speed, 1000 mm belt width to convey 1350tph, and 7 mtpa of coal. Despite high initial figure, the belt speed was lifted to 6.5 mps in 1996 to accommodate mine throughput increase. In 2002, new low loss ST2100 1100mm wide belt replaced the old ST2250 due for change-out. An upgrade project was initiated at the end of 2003 to further increase the belt speed to 8.5 mps, hence to increase the OLC capacity to 30 mtpa (million ton per annum). Performance data, experience of site personnel, site observation and tests, benchmarking, and information from equipment manufacturers were major inputs to the design review. The project fast track was another challenge in addition to executing modifications on a production lifeline. The project was completed within fifteen months and the OLC was successfully commissioned at 8.5 mps belt speed in February 2005. The OLC has been to date conveying 4 200 tph satisfactorily.

2, Survey of Representative Group of Metal and Non-mental Mines Before proceeding to develop and analyze Emergency Escape System Guidelines, it was necessary to obtain a broad range of information, including both fact and opinion. Although there were many areas to consider, the surveys had three primary goals 1. To determine the current state of underground escapeway planning and execution in American, metal and non-metal mines. 2. To determine, for a wide range of mining conditions, what difficulties can be encountered in complying with present and proposed escapeway regulatory standards. 3. To determine what improvements could be made and what equipment and technology was available to aid in implementing these improvements. To accomplish these goals, three major surveys were undertaken¬ 1. Survey of MESA and State Mining officials, discussed in Section 2. 1. 2. Survey of representative U S metal and non-metal mines, discussed in Section 2. 2. 3. Survey of manufacturers supplying equipment, primarily hoisting, suitable for use in escape systems, the product information which was obtained is discussed in Section 7.

The disposal of sludges and other similar industrial wastes is a major problem. Liquid wastes from industrial operations, when treated, produce significant volumes of sludge which are difficult to dispose of, because of the chemical and physical properties of the sludge. In the mining industry sludge is produced from various water treatment operations, in particular mine drainage neutralization. Waste water from coal preparation plants also produces a sludge however the sludge is in fact a slurry containing clays, coal fines and coal impurities. In many areas the disposal of these sludges is producing a serious problem. Mine drainage sludge consists of a variety of hydrous iron oxides, usually ferric oxides, contaminated with other neutralization products such as calcium sulfate. The Neves-Corvo copper-tin mine is the highest-grade large-tonnage copper operation in the world and is now arguably the most significant producing base-metal mine in Europe, rating in the top ten world producers of both copper and tin. A description is given of the initial exploration work and the development of the project from the orebody discovery in the Iberian Pyrite Belt of southern Portugal in 1977 to full operating capacity in 1990. The chronological account includes discussion of the main organisational, financial, technical and environmental decisions and of the various difficulties encountered, and the challenges of the future are identified. The project was brought in on schedule and within budget

Eight different oil zones have been identified and produced at Santa Fe Springs, of which three or four are in turn divided into two or three parts. These zones, from top to bottom, are the Foix, Bell, Meyer, Nordstrom, Buckbee, O'Connell, Clark and Hathaway, or third Clark. While there has been some difference of opinion over this nomenclature with reference to the different zones referred to as Clark, it has no particular bearing on the water problems. Each of these oil zones has had waters of varying salinity associated with it, either within or at the bottom of the zone. Table 1 is a tabulation of the zones, their maximum thicknesses, salinity and heads of various waters. Surface waters are fresh, and of high head, giving artesian flow in some instances.

ORE production from the property of the Miami Copper Co. began early in 1911. Until 1925 this ore came from the so-called high-grade orebodies, which contained a little over 2 per cent. copper. This ore was mined by the following methods. 1. Top slicing after mining the peaks by square setting, which produced 4,524,347 tons, including ore from square setting. 2. Shrinkage stoping with sublevel caving of the pillars, which produced 2,230,577 tons. 3. Undercut caving with hand tramming, which, produced 15,427,672 tons. Estimating December tonnage, the total ore mined to the end of 1929 will amount to slightly more than 43,000,000 tons. The first method was described by E. G. Deane1 and the second by D. B. Scott,1 and the third, together with a general, description of the mine, by J. H. Hensley, Jr.1 The geology of the district has been worked out by. Dr. F. L. Ransome.2

Reserve Mining Company, the first large-scale taconite pellet producer in the United States, mines it's crude ore at the Peter Mitchell Mire located on the eastern end of the Mesabi Iron Range near Babbitt, MN. The ore is processed at Reserve's beneficiation plant on the north shore of lake Superior at Silver Bay, M. The mine and plant are linked by a 47 mile, double track, railroad which is owned and operated by Reserve. (see Fig 1). At rated capacity, the mine can produce 33 million It/yr of crude ore, 15 million It/yr of waste rock and 1.0 - 1.4 million yd3/yr of glacial till stripping. Haulage of all mined material is accomplished using trucks. Ore is transported by tractor-trailer side dump units which have capacitys ranging from 83 to 110 long tons. Waste rock and glacial till is transported in end dump units of 50 to 120 LT capacity. Loading is accomplished by 11/13 yd3 power shovels and 7/10 yd3 front-end loaders.

Increased competition in today’s global economy has put mineral industry under excessive pressure to effectively manage production assets to generate business wealth. Capital intensive industry (CII) organizations are seeking ways to manage skill resources, internal processes, and organizational networks with a view to reduce the cost of ownership of assets and increase efficiency of operations and service. The emerging concept of Enterprise Asset Management(EAM) is a collection of business processes that allow CII with right focus on return on investment on assets, to make right decisions on planning, acquisition, maintenance, operation, rehabilitation, and disposal of assets. Information technology (IT) can drive significant returns if the infrastructure covers seamlessly all business processes and all systems, like geographic information system, maintenance management, investment management, laboratory information management, and supervisory control and data acquisition system. The simple approach to IT in the past with disconnected silos of technology, information, and business processes cannot deliver the expected benefits under the modern business environment. Identification of business and application component is a prerequisite for the development of an asset management system that links effectively disciplined processes having characteristics of agility, speed, and integration. This paper discusses various issues and outlines the steps for developing an asset management roadmap in an organizsation. It also presents major business and application components of the system. BY means of the C-SiC thermocouple1, liquid metal temperatures have been found to vary much more than was previously supposed, and fortunately these variations can be directly associated with some of our former knowledge which combined to form the "art" of liquid-metal manipulation. COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF THIS DEVICE Several types of installations are operating in different plants. There are so many variables in steel plants in regard to operation, pro-cedure, arrangement of pouring platforms, ladles, etc., that most of the installations now in service in this country are "tailor-made"; never-theless, it is felt that satisfactory gains have been made inasmuch as each installation has indicated some effect of temperature upon the metal-lurgical operation, and has pointed the way toward technical and finan-cial benefits. In most cases, it has been necessary to accumulate the temperature data until sufficient metallurgical information is available for the drawing of conclusions. When mechanical difficulties have been eliminated, a distinct correlation of these factors has been obtained. The installations now in service. are used for the determination of temperatures in the basic open-hearth furnace prior to tapping and in ladles from both acid and basic furnaces prior to pouring. Some of the installations are in shops making the higher priced steels; others are in "tonnage shops." The errors of human element, smoke screens and emissivity corrections connected with the use of the optical pyrometer do not affect the C-SiC thermocouple readings. The accuracy of the C-SiC- thermocouple and the temperatures measured are discussed later in this paper.

"In 2011, a site study indicated that the application of Honeywell’s Multivariable Predictive Control Technology (MPC) to the Goldex processing facility would provide significant opportunities for improvement. Grinding MPC was implemented in the SAG Mill in June 2015. This pilot application, called Phase 1, featured one of the first Multivariable Predictive Controllers to be installed in a Canadian mineral processing plant. Since the implementation of MPC, gold recovery from the gravity circuit has increased. MPC contributed to a decrease in flotation feed particle size (120 to 112 µm) and an increase in the SAG feed tonnage (8.5% increase). MPC also increased and stabilized the % solids of the SAG feed, which can have an impact on cost reduction (mechanical maintenance). Additionally, MPC increased productivity, providing grinding operators with more time to perform other tasks. Further anticipated benefits include the standardization of the grinding circuit operation from one team to the next, thereby minimizing circuit disturbances resulting from different operating philosophies. This paper will discuss the advanced control project development and justification, the technology and rapid implementation process, the performance results and the benefits obtained.IntroductionGoldex is an underground mine located near Val-d’Or that is owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM). Between 2008 and 2011, mining focused on the Goldex Extension Zone (GEZ). In 2011, the project was halted due to geotechnical problems; operations ceased until late 2013. Goldex operations resumed in September 2013 with the M and E zones, for which there were 0.7M gold ounces of proven and probable reserves, 2.1M ounces of measured and indicated resources and 1.2M ounces of inferred resources, totalizing 4M ounces. Life expectancy was extended until 2024."

THE metal iron has physical and chemical properties which are somewhat different from those of steels, but a knowledge of the pure metal is a useful starting point in studying the behavior of steels. Solid iron exists in two different crystalline forms, called alpha (a) and gamma (?) iron, the former being the ordinary form at room temperature. When heated above the "A2 point," 768 C (1414 F), the metal becomes nonmagnetic, and at the "A, point," 910 C (1670 F), it undergoes a change in crystalline form to become gamma iron. In the range 768 to 910 C, it is sometimes called beta (ß) iron to distinguish it from the magnetic alpha, but the two are identical in crystal structure. When gamma iron is further heated to 1400 C (2552 E), it changes into delta (d) iron, which is identical with beta or non- magnetic alpha iron. Pure iron melts (in an inert atmosphere) at 1537 C (2800 F); the melting point is generally lowered by alloys or impurities. PROPERTIES OF IRON AT HIGH TEMPERATURES Many of the properties of iron undergo abrupt changes at the transition temperatures.1 For example, in heating through the A, point, a sudden shrinkage in volume occurs. Similarly, melting is attended by sharp physical changes such as an increase in volume. Table 16-1 contains a summary of the measured physical properties of pure iron at several temperatures. Usually the properties change smoothly within the range of stability of a given form, but this is not always true. For example, the specific heat reaches a sharp maximum at the A2 point although no trans- formation occurs. (See Fig 14-1.) Solvent Powers of Liquid Iron. [Many methods of analyzing tar oils for their tar acid and base content have bun employed in connection with both academic and. industrial investigations. Most of these analytical procedures are based on the diminution in volume caused by extraction with alkali and mineral acids (contraction method), although other methods haves been employed.4/ In many instances the adoption of an analytical method was not preceded by adequate study, and, as a consequence, the literature, on this subject is conspicuous for its contradictory claims and recommendations. It has bin shown in the, case of certain synthetic solutions5/ that large errors may result if the analysis is carried out by simple extraction with alkali and mineral acids.]

DR. W. F. GRAY (Contributed discussion, presented at meeting by Mr. S. C. Mifilen): Mr. Rowe's suggestion that the Institute should organize itself to interpret the needs of the mining industry to federal and provincial mines departments should commend itself to our membership as sensible and practical, and as one which these public administrative bodies may welcome. One has to start with the premise that those who head the departments of mines in question have the welfare of the industry at heart. Also, it must be postulated that the technical viewpoint of our membership is necessarily free of political considerations. With these reservations, one ventures to state that both Mr. Rowe in his communication to the present session of the Institute, and Professor M. Y. Williams in his earlier communication to the Western Meeting, on The Geological Survey and Mining Development (1), voice the regret general among our membership at the abandonment of the honoured name, and to some extent of the status, of the Geological Survey of Canada. The writer, in 1932, devoted his Presidential Address to the Institute to an appreciation of the value to Canadian mining of the Geological Survey of Canada (2), affirming the desire of the Institute "that the work of the Survey shall be maintained at the highest pitch of efficiency the resources of our country will permit, because, to scrimp expenses on the Survey, is 'to save at the spigot and lose at the bunghole'." He believes that is still the opinion of the Institute, and, if contraction of the usefulness of the Survey is feared by our members at this time, it is incumbent upon the Institute, in fairness to those who direct our government, to say so in precise and explicit terms. Mr. Rowe puts the situation pithily when he writes: "We have reached a stage in our development where a stock-taking and co-ordination of existing knowledge and data is essential. This is a part of that basic function of Dominion mineral technical services which is national and not provincial in its scope".

Still another shadow was cast over coal's largest market-the electric utilities-when President Johnson signed into law the Federal Clean Air Act of 1967. Air pollution-sulfur reduction-was thus brought into sharper focus as one of the central problems of the coal industry. Industry executives testified in both Houses of Congress to enable the lawmakers to develop a workable and economic law. The new legislation calls for the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare to establish air control regions. After the regions are outlined the Department will publish air quality criteria on pollutants. Anticipating this legislation, the coal and utility industries have for the last several years been involved in extensive research programs to develop solutions to the air pollution problem. Even though the coal industry has been under strong attack for its part in adding contaminants to the atmosphere, it is by no means the major contributor.

As part of a Bureau of Mines research program to conserve critical and strategic metals, an aqueous electrodeposition method for preparing stainless-steel-type coatings was studied. Chromium powder (averaging 3 J1.m diam) was suspended in a ferrous-nickelous sulfate electroplating bath and occluded in the electrodeposited Fe-Ni alloy matrix. Subsequent heat treatment of the resulting composite coating formed the ternary alloy. The occlusion process was affected by the quantity of Cr powder suspended in the electrolyte and by the microstructure and composition of the electrodeposited matrix. Coatings containing up to 21 wt pct Cr were deposited from an electrolyte containing 20 vol pct suspended Cr powder. Heat treatment at 1,100° C for 8 h homogenized the composite coating. Deposition of 44Fe36Ni20Cr alloy coatings (250 J1.m thick) on AISI 1020 carbon steel rods, followed by heat treatment, provided complete protection of the carbon steel during exposure to a boiling 65-pct-HN03 solution. Corrosion rates of 0.6±OA mm/yr for the coating in the boiling HN03 approximate that of 304 stainless steel. Practically shaped electroforms have been prepared by the coating method.

INTRODUCTION In a bed of fine coal, water can be found in the interstices created by the particle surfaces and in the pores within the coal particles. The extent of the interstices voidage is obviously a function of the particle sizes and morphologies, as shown by the fact that the bulk density of coarse coal is greater than that of fine coal. After drainage, the voids can be completely or partially filled. By increasing the suction pressure across the bed, as is done in vacuum filtering, the quantity of water in the voids can be reduced. But eventually the increased suction pressure has little influence on the moisture reduction. In addition, the moisture in the pore structure of the coal is unaffected by the mechanical removal of the moisture in the interstices. When this condition is reached, the total moisture content of the coal can only be reduced further by evaporating the water. Evaporative drying is done for one or more of the following reasons: 1. To avoid freezing difficulties and to facilitate handling during shipment, storage, and transfer to the points of utilization. 2. To reduce the heat loss due to evaporation of the moisture from the coal during the combustion process, thus increasing heating efficiency. 3. To decrease transportation costs. The heating value of coal is equally improved for each percentage point reduction in the noncombustibles in coal. It is estimated that a reduction of 1%22 in the total moisture in the coal increases the thermal efficiency of the heat-raising process by about 0. Some coal buyers consider 1 % moisture content to be the equivalent of a 4% ash content.23 It is important to avoid drying the coal to too low a moisture level, since the complete removal of surface moisture to produce a bone dry product can result in a serious dust, wind lost, and safety problem. Surface moisture con- tents of 3% or less for shipped coal are not uncommon. However, the evaporatively dried coal may be lower, Y, to 1%, since the mechanically dewatered coal may be higher. Evaporatively dried coal can be treated (sprayed) with chemicals in order to control the dustiness and any freezing difficulties, thereby providing the producer with more operational flexibility. The evaporative drying of coal is essentially a process of simultaneous transfer of energy, usually in the form of heat, and water, in the form of vapor, from the coal. In order to remove the undesired moisture, it is necessary to raise the temperature of the water from the entering temperature of the feed stream, TF, to the boiling point of the water (usually taken as 212"F), vaporize

BECAUSE of the attention given in recent years to the flotation process, there is an extensive range of equipment available to any staff detailed for: the design of a flotation mill. This statement applies not only to the flotation machines, but also to equipment for crushing and grinding, elevating the pulp, dehydrating of concentrates, and the methods of driving the various equipment.Distributed through the Proceedings and Transactions of various metallurgical societies and journals there are many excellent descriptions of flotation mills, their equipment and performance.Whilst these articles describe-in many cases in detail-the equipment in the mills to which they refer, the reasons which govern the choice of each particular equipment are not usually given.

The benefits derived from the use of main fan evasees or diffusers are well known. If a well designed evasee is fitted to a fan either more air will flow through it or the same air flow rate will be discharged at a lower fan speed. This latter possibility will reduce the air power requirement of the mine, the fan input power and the overall energy costs. Despite these apparent advantages, many reports have been received from the industry of poor evasee performance. After examination, it appears that these problems are often caused by installation difficulties or inaccurate design procedures. The performance of an evasee is affected by several independent factors. Some of these factors describe the evasee geometry whilst others are concerned with the behaviour of the air as it passes through the evasee. This paper shows that the divergence angle is by no means the only ;important parameter which affects evasee performance and that the size of the inlet boundary layer has a significant influence. The performance of evasees of differing geometric shape are compared and the criterion to be used for optimum performance is discussed. It is shown that the commonly used evasee efficiency is a poor indicator of good performance. Recent work by the author and others is evaluated and a simple design. guide discussed. For more sophisticated work, details of a. computer program are provided. Finally, a brief resume of the performance of truncated diffusers is given. Since compressibility effects can be ignored for most mining applications, incompressible flow has been assumed for most of this paper.

At the present stage of geothermal technology and the still limited applications of geothermal energy, most of us consider any use of "things geothermal" to be something out of the ordinary. If in such a situation there can be a use of geothermal energy which is even more unusual, then the utilization of geothermal energy-or more precisely, geothermal heat--for the manufacture of salt is just such a use. This is the essence of investigations in the Fiji Islands, where experiments in the evaporation of seawater to product, salt have been conducted using geothermal heat emanating from the ground in an area of hot springs. The hot springs are located on the coast at Savusavu in a depression about GO ft wide. There are ten individual springs, but most of these are small and insignificant. The temperature of the water from these springs reaches 100°C.
