Statistics shows that the majority of accidents with fatal outcome are caused by methane and/or coal dust explosion. This leads to assume that contemporary counter-explosion systems of various designs cannot be considered effective. Considering the growing threat of methane explosion in the coming years along with the development of deeper levels, the improvement of a system for protecting people in underground opening appears urgent. This paper presents the results of the testing of the Automatic System from Methane Explosion in Coal Mines. The protective system consists of: i) a wireless device for the detection of explosions and activation of a protective system, and ii) an absorber with a pyrotechnic device ensuring the discharge of dispersed water. The protective system, at the command of the initiation signal, produces tailored dispersing water mist with droplet sizes in the range of 25?400 ?m along selected tunnel sections.

Today we are talking about Industry 4.0, as the latest revolution of industrial processes and progress, considering that the steam engine (Industry 1.0), railways and cars, mass production in the 1920th (2.0), Industrial Automation (3.0), and finally integrated manufacturing, integrated communication, and internet (4.0) can be seen as the state-of-the-art situation in industry, nowadays. Similar to the Industry progress, we can approach the rolling process of material, which started about 150 years ago in a very basic way. Steam engine- and belt driven-mills were very operators’ intensive, brutal and risky to operate. Mechanical improvements brought throughput, safety and quantity, as also quality of the products. The rolling of steel, in particular of rails, beams, rebar, strip (focus in this paper) and plate has enabled the large scale transport and travel, the building of bridges and buildings, the manufacturing of ships and cars. From single stands to continuous rolling trains the production and quality of mills increased significantly. From ingots and blooms to slabs, we have to admit a big jump in which has changed the face of the world significantly. Thin Slab Rolling has revolutionized the output and the throughput of rolling mills (Generation 3.0 to 5.0). Finally, Endless Rolling, has boosted the quality and quantity of rolling mill processes and permitted nowadays to enter in market niches which were not thinkable a decade ago. Mastering the automation and applying reliable systems (mechanical and electronically) of drives, actuators and sensors, as also communication and information interchange to all levels of automation are the success factors of such complex mills, we call herein after “Rolling Mills of Generation 6.0”.

For more than a decade, Hatch has used process and logistics models to assist Rio Tinto Fer et Titane (RTFT) with capacity planning, debottlenecking, and optimization to help ensure design capability, capital effectiveness, and operational efficiency of the integrated production chain. Process models are used to optimize the physics-based aspects of the system, such as mass and energy balances, flow rates, yields, and equipment specifications. Dynamic logistics models are used to optimize how the various plant areas work together to achieve the desired ends and deal with such things as plant scheduling and synchronization strategies, sizing of buffers between processes, defining the required number of process and material handling units, and designing a plant layout that minimizes plant interferences and inefficiencies. The combined use of process models and logistics models enables the overall plant to be optimized from both a productivity and quality point of view, with each plant area working in harmony with one another to achieve targeted capacities and efficiencies. This paper describes the many benefits derived from such modeling efforts over the past 15 years for each of the major plant areas at RTFT: Beneficiation Plant, Smelter Plant, Steel Plant, UGS Plant, and Powder Plant (RTMP).

The Zwolle oil field of Sabine Parish, La., is different from most oil producing areas of the State in that the oil is obtained from marl and chalkrock formations. The thickness of the reservoir rocks averages 500 feet; but production is not continuous throughout this thickness, as the oil apparently is localized in vertical and nearly vertical solution cavities and channelways or in porous zones of limited horizontal extent. The nature of the oil accumulation has caused two outstanding peculiarities of the field: (1) About 60 percent of the tests drilled were dry holes and (2) there were many instances of well interference. Commercial production was discovered in November 1928, after 17 years of prospecting in and around the present limits of the area now developed which has a length of about 22 miles and a maximum width of 4 miles. The field had produced 10,266,896 barrels of oil to January 1, 1934. The oil ranges in gravity from 400 to 420 A.P.I.

Experiments investigating the treatment of a ground wood white water waste from an Ontario pulp and paper mill by an HVCB coal are reported. Adsorption capacity for the waste, with a soluble COD contribution of 2,100 mg/I, amounted to 0.17 per cent, by weight, of the Nova Scotia coal used. Percolation of the white water waste through a coal bed indicated that soluble COD is removed. For finely ground coals, over 90 per cent of the suspended solids in the waste are retained on the coal. Plugging of the coal bed is rapid, so that any treating process using filtration would have to renew the surface of the bed frequently.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, through an Interagency Agreement with the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command (TACOM), has successfully developed a steel expendable pattern casting process (EPC) for the manufacture of armorplate. The new armor is lighter and more ballistically effective than conventional rolled homogeneous armor (RHA), and costs less. An applique armor spinoff from the program was field-tested during the Gulf War. The applique armor withstood direct impacts from enemy munitions without failure.

"INTRODUCTION Preliminary examination of the Blue Ledge mine was made by O. H. Metzger, a Bureau of Mines engineer, in May 1943. A result of his recommendations; a Bureau of Mines sampling and exploration project was begun by J. R. Reynolds in October 1943 and continued to December when it was recessed for the winter. The project was resumed by the auther in May 1944 and was completed in November 1944. The Federal Geological Survey 3/ assisted by mapping the geology of the mine and logging the diamond-drill cores obtained from the Bureau's exploration Company maps, diamond-drill-hole records, several reports, and other data on the property were made available to the Bureau by D. C. Brown, of Towne Securities Corporation, owner of the Blue Ledge group of claims. E. A. White, general manager of the Tacoma Smelter of the American Smelting & Refining Co., supplied statistics for all ore that has been purchased from the Blue Ledge mine by his company."

The Telfer concentrator, located in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia, consists of a dual train gold/copper operation processing ore from one underground and, currently, two open pit mines with differing mineralogy. The flotation circuit of each train was designed to operate in several modes depending on the feed mineralogy. The majority of ore mined at Telfer is processed in a sequential mode where copper minerals are first floated into a saleable copper concentrate followed by the flotation of an auriferous pyrite concentrate which is treated in an on-site hydrometallurgical plant (carbon-in-leach (CIL)). Gold is recovered as a gravity product within the primary grinding circuit, to the copper concentrate, and to a lesser extent, the CIL circuit.Since Telfer was re-opened, with a new concentrator, in 2004, the processing plant has struggled with poor copper concentrate grades, partially due to the excessive entrainment of non-sulfide gangue minerals in the copper flotation circuit and, more recently, due to composite copper particles produced when processing ore from a supplementary satellite pit that has not previously been processed through the new Telfer concentrator. Gold recoveries in the CIL circuit have also been below industry standard. This paper presents the implementation of recent changes made to the circuit to address these performance issues. The reconfiguration of the circuit has involved the installation of the following major equipment items: two ISAMillsÖ in ultra-fine grinding applications (one in the copper circuit and one in the pyrite circuit), two Jameson Cells to improve fine gangue rejection and a bank of 5 + Outotec TC30s to recovery copper and gold from the reground pyrite stream. Outside air for ventilating coal mines in Alabama varies considerably in both temperature and moisture content during the year. Alternate condensation and evaporation of the moisture on mine roofs may result in stresses detrimental to the strength of mine roof. It is well known that the clays in shales absorb moisture, and many investigations have noted the weakening of shales by absorption of moisture. Parker (1970) concluded that there is an annual cycle of rock deterioration in mine roof rock caused by the annual temperature-humidity cycle at the surface. He further noted that moisture reduces the strength of dry rock by one-half, that moisture added to dry rock can cause failure in compression, and that drying of wet rock causes tensile stress buildups by shrinkage. His recommendations for alleviating the moisture-temperature problem was to seal the rock in critical areas and to control ventilation so that air temperature will be lower than rock temperature. The latter recommendation will avoid condensation on the rock surfaces. Hartmann and Greenwald (1941) published the results of a very comprehensive experimental project to determine the effect of temperature and humidity changes on the behavior of mine roof. Their general conclusions included statements that roof rocks were very sensitive to moisture changes, but had low coefficients of thermal expansion. "The CONSTEEL Process introduces a new concept in electric steelmaking by continuously feeding-preheating-melting and refining ferrous scrap or direct reduced iron. The process uses the furnace off-gas and fuel to preheat the scrap in a specially designed preheater. Thermal incineration of the flue gas reduces the carbon monoxide level to the more stringent requirements. Hot water or steam production from heat of flue gas is optional. The tap-to-tap time is set to match the cycle of the caster. The steel is treated via ladle metallurgy. The environment inside and outside of the steelplant is improved by decreasing levels of noise and hazardous emissions. Energy consumption decreases and disturbance to the electric network is eliminated. A CONSTEEL prototype was tested at Nucor Steel, Darlington, SC. A greenfield project is in the completion stage at the Florida Steel plant of Charlotte, NC, USA. The Process PhilosophyThe philosophy of the CONSTEEL Process is not solely to enhance efficiency; this was just a natural result of the change from a batch to a continuous practice. The primary objective in development was four-fold:1) 100% process control2) Rational use of available energy3) Improved environment inside and outside the plant4) Stability of energy input from the power systemIt was to make electric steelmaking more a science than an art and amenable to modern automation.The Basic Concept of CONSTEELThe concept of the process is shown in figure and includes basically a continuous feeding system, a preheater and a melting - refining furnace. A pre-established amount of heat is introduced into the scrap while traveling through the preheater using the sensible and chemical heat contained in the furnace off-gas and additional fuel. Melting-refining is carried out in the electric furnace. Slag formers, slag foaming additions and oxygen are injected to refine the melted steel continuously, to minimize the refractory erosion, to shield the arc, thus optimizing the transfer to the metal bath of the heat generated in the arc, to keep the bath homogeneous in composition and temperature and to produce carbon monoxide (CO) which is fuel for the preheater."

For recovery of rare earth elements from the NdFeB based permanent magnet scraps, a high temperature process was used. Permanent magnets scraps were firstly oxidized in air. The optimal oxidation conditions under air are at temperature of 700oC holding for 30min. After the oxidation process, the oxides were reduced by graphite crucible at 1500oC under Ar atmosphere. By this way, the rare earth elements were recovered in the form of oxides, and Fe was separated to the metal phase. Boron distributed in both the rare earth oxides (REO) containing slag and the metal phase. In order to reduce the boron contents in the rare earth oxides, the carbon saturated iron bath and NdFeB added carbon saturated iron bath were used to refine the slag. By this process, the rare earth oxides with a comparatively high purity of 98.2% were gotten.

"For a drainage channel built in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a value engineering (VE) proposal incorporating a secant pile top-down approach saved time and facilitated construction work on the larger flood control project. The channel, at the Bechara Industrial Area, Puerto Nuevo Port Facility and the Puerto Rico Maritime Shipping Authority Dock, was needed to allow drainage of the Rio Puerto Nuevo into San Juan Bay. The port area, one of the busiest in the Caribbean, has over 6,000 ft (1,800 m) of berthing wharves for ocean-going container ships along with over 500,000 sq ft (46,000 m²) of container loading and unloading areas, and is critical to the local economy.Planners wanted to minimize the impact of construction to the port and dock users, and developed a construction methodology and work sequencing that would prevent a complete barrier to port traffic. This plan involved non-contiguous and limited work area that “leapfrogged” along the alignment so as to prevent long barriers to lateral traffic movement across the culvert alignment.After reviewing the project plans and schedule, Morris-Shea Bridge Company (MSB) proposed an alternate design and construction approach that provided significant cost and schedule benefits, and also provided better access for the port and dock users. The alternate VE proposal involved top-down construction methodology and redesigned drainage culvert geometry with two parallel 2,000 linear ft (lf) (600 m) secant walls installed on each side of the culvert. These walls facilitated excavation and formed part of the culvert permanent walls. The result was a significantly reduced required construction right of way that allowed construction work in contiguous areas largely without impact on ongoing port activity. MSB conceived the design concept, and engineered design and construction of the VE alternate secant pile culvert.The project initially consisted of an open channel in the industrial area picking up water from the existing Rio Puerto Nuevo, transitioning to an enclosed culvert through the port and dock areas, and outfall through the existing dock. MOCCA is a Multivariable Optimal Constrained Control Algorithm developed specifically for non-square industrial control applications with practical difficulties such as interactions, time delays, constraints, modelling development, etc. MOCCA consists of an off-line simulation/translation module, for tuning the control parameters, and an on-line module that implements the designed control law. This paper describes an evaluation of MOCCA on the Hemlo grinding circuit which comprises one open circuit ball mill and two closed circuit ball mills in series. In this case a 4x4 unconstrained control problem was considered. The manipulated variables included the fresh ore feed rate and three pump box water additions. The controlled variables were the grinding circuit product particle size and three pump box levels. In this application soft constraints were implemented through control action and control error weighting. The feedforward capability of MOCCA was used to compensate for a measured water flow disturbance to one of the pump boxes. MOCCA performed very well during plant evaluations when compared to the original classical multi-loop control strategy and proved to be quite robust. Perhaps most importantly, the process engineers and plant operators have a high level of comfort both in understanding MOCCA's general operating principles, and with its demonstrated performance.

This paper, which is one of a group presented by the United States Bureau of Mines covering mining practice in different districts, deals in particular with the methods employed in mining the horizontal type of zinc-lead orebodies of the West Baxter area of the Tri-State zinc and lead district. These orebodies, locally termed "sheet-ground" bodies, with their relatively low working faces and low tenor of zinc and lead, require changes in the mining practice which is used in the balance of the district. In addition to the general mining methods, this paper also describes the system of hand sorting employed prior to the direct milling of the ore. The Hartley mine is situated mile west of Baxter Springs, Kans., as indicated in Figure 1. Its general outline and the location of the shafts with respect to the milling plant are shown in Figure 2.

"The oscillating cup viscometer has become a dominant technique to measure the viscosities of high temperature molten metals. Unfortunately, the viscosity estimation model from the observed logarithmic decrement and period of the oscillation is very complicated. There are still large discrepancies of viscosity estimation values between using different measurement facilities and using different viscosity estimation models for a same molten metal. The purpose of the paper is to evaluate the accuracy of an oscillating cup viscometer in Auburn University. Two well known viscosity estimation models, Roscoe's and Torklep's equations, are compared and discussed. The theoretical literature for the fluid flow inside an oscillating cup is reviewed and a more accurate working equation for the Auburn oscillating cup viscometer is developed. Some design parameters of the oscillating cup viscometer, which directly affect the accuracy of viscosity estimation by using the working equation, are discussed. In addition, applications and experimental measuring data are presented in the paper for several different commercial alloys, such as aluminum alloys: A319, A356 and A201, nickel-base super alloys: In713 and In718, and casting irons, C40 Gray Iron and Ductile Iron.1 IntroductionThe oscillating cup viscometer is the most important and has been most frequently used in viscosity measurement for high temperature liquids [1-4]. The principal advantages of this technique over others are its mechanical simplicity and the ability to measure the time period and amplitude decay with great precision. In the viscometer, a high temperature liquid (such as a molten metal) is contained within a crucible suspended by a wire to form a torsional pendulum, which induces torsional oscillation motion. This motion is damped primarily by viscous dissipation within the viscous liquid inside the cup. The viscosity of the liquid can be calculated by an analytical or numerical solution ofthe equations of motion of the oscillating cup system."

"This paper describes the optic fiber structural monitoring system implemented for Pavoncelli Bis tunnel. The paper highlights the optic fiber sensors customization capabilities, how they smoothly fit precast concrete lining processes and TBM operations, and how a lifelong service monitoring can be achieved. An overview of readings’ evolution during excavation concludes the paper.INTRODUCTIONPavoncelli Bis is a 10 km hydraulic tunnel designed to by-pass the existing Pavoncelli tunnel which experienced severe damages during the 1980 Irpino-Lucano earthquake, in south of Italy (Barla 2009). Pavoncelli Bis excavation work commenced in 1988-90, however, when excavation approached pk. 0+583 in 1992, water percolations became more and more consistent and resulted in work suspension. The tunnel was eventually sealed at pk. 0+383, leaving a flooded section between pk. 0.383 and pk. 0+583. Work resumed in 2012 where EPB-TBM excavation was adopted to cross the flooded section and to overcome complex hydro-geological conditions in various lito-types and, in particular, in the Varicolori Clay-shales area (Figure 1).Consequently, stress evolution monitoring is extremely important during construction and during the service life of tunnel lining in clay-shales and in faults areas. In particular, the paper focuses on the monitoring system proposed for the newly EPB-TBM excavated portion from pk 0+583 onwards where optic fiber sensing technology was chosen for its reading stability and reliability in presence of water and its ability to be connected in series and remotely interrogated at kilometers of distance. FBGS OPTICAL FIBER SENSOR TECHNOLOGYFiber Bragg Grating Sensors (FBGS) are gaining increasing attention in the field of experimental stress analysis. Basically, Fiber Optic Bragg Sensors are strain-measuring devices and therefore provide many of the advantages of the well-known metal foil strain gages (Kreuzer 2007).Bragg gratings are written into so called single-mode fibers. These fibers consist of a very small inner core of 4 to 9 µm diameter and an outer part (cladding) of pure glass (SiO2) of 125 µm diameter. The difference of refraction indexes between inner core and cladding causes the light to propagate only inside the small core."

A system capable of monitoring a mine electrical power system to detect incipient electrical component failure could significantly improve power system safety and availability. The U.S. Bureau of Mines funded a contract with The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) to establish the theoretical and technical framework for such a system. This report briefly outlines the contract, reviewing related Bureau and Penn State work prior to its award, and describes support work carried out by the Bureau. The main focus of the report is on research efforts by Penn State and subsequent results. An existing algorithm for incipient-failure detection and classification was studied, and recommendations are made to improve its performance. In addition, mathematical models of cable-connected motor systems and deteriorating motors were developed and implemented on computers. These models and laboratory tests were used to study and document relationships between component deterioration and electrical terminal effects. The project was supported by the U.S. Navy and the nature of its interest in the application of failure prediction techniques is also included.

"This paper describes the work undertaken to renovate the Pipe Open Pit drainage system, incorporating measures to improve effluent quality. It describes the technical feat of drilling an l l-inch-diameter hole from the bottom of the open pit for a distance of 1100feet to intersect an underground drift. An innovative method of checking the inclination of this hole is also described. The paper outlines the construction required on the 1500-foot level of the underground mine to facilitate water impoundment and slime settling, as well as the instrumentation for control of water flows. IntroductionThe Manitoba Division of Inco Metals Company operates two mines-an underground mine at Thompson and an open pit at Pipe. The Pipe Open Pit is located 20 miles southwest of the City of Thompson, approximately 400 miles due north of Win nipeg(Fig. 1).Surface diamond drilling of the Pipe ore body was sta rted in 1959. In 1961, a shaft was sunk to a depth o f 1,570 feet to carry out further exploration work and obtain bulk ore samples for metallurgical testing. Site preparation to mine the upper portion of the orebody as an open pit was initiated in 1966 and by late 1967, the removal of silt and clay overburden was in progress. The contractor completed the dredging in the fall of 1969. Over 12 million cubic yards of muskeg, clay and silt was removed, which in some places was 150 feet deep over the orebody. Production began in early 1971, by which time the top three benches of rock had been excavated and the orebody exposed.The Pipe No. 2 Mine main shaft was started in 1970 and completed in 1973 at a depth of 3,160 feet. Development for exploration purposes was carried out on the 1500 and 2460 levels, and permanent pumping facilities were installed.The surface dimensions of the open pit are 2,200 by 1,600 feet, with the long axis striking northeast. The walls are designed with a 45- to 50-degree slope and the ultimate design depth is 720 feet. The present depth of the pit is 520 feet and production capacity is 6,800 tons of ore per mine day."
