COBALT is a silvery white metal with a slight bluish cast, strongly resembling nickel in its appearance and properties, notably its resistance to corrosion, although its alloys with other metals differ quite decidedly in their properties from those of nickel. The name cobalt was derived from the German "Kobold" meaning goblin and this came to be applied to the cobalt minerals which, although they resembled ores, did not readily yield metal when smelted by the primitive processes available in the Middle Ages. Cobalt minerals were used as pigments by potters and glass workers before the Christian era. Cobalt blue glass was found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients were entirely unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt and the metal itself was only isolated about the middle of the eighteenth century by Brandt although the preparation of cobalt compounds had been carried on in a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits at Schneeberg, Germany, in 1470. The metal is fairly hard, with a density when pure of 8.81 in the cast state and 8.92 after working. The com¬mercial grade of cobalt has a density of about 8.75 in the cast state. The atomic weight is 58.97. The Brinell hardness of the pure metal is 124; that of the commercial grade varies from as low as 100 to as high as 138, depending upon the impurities present. Pure cobalt has a sharp melting point at 1478°C. The tensile strength of the pure metal in the cast condition is said to be higher than that of any other pure metal. Kalmus gives it as 34,400 lb. per sq. in. for cast unannealed metal; the effect of annealing at 850 to 900°C. is to raise the strength slightly. The yield point is close to the ultimate strength and the reduction in area and elongation are both low. Mechanical working raises the tensile strength of pure cobalt rapidly and in the form of wire it will be over 100,000 lb. per sq. in. The presence of small quantities of carbon in the commercial metal raises the tensile strength to as high as 61,000 lb. per sq. in., the reduction in area and elongation being raised at the same time to approximately 20 per cent.

A modified cast-on method has been developed to reinforce aluminum castings with steel insert. Defect-free bond between the steel insert and the aluminum casting has been consistently obtained. Data obtained from a push-out experiment indicated that the bond strength was much higher than that obtained using the Al-Fin approach. This paper introduces this modified method in four sections: the coating of the steel pins, the cast-in method, microstructure characterization, and the bond strength. The section on the coating of the steel pins contains coating material selection, electro-plating technique for plating Cu and Ni on steel, and diffusion bonding of the coatings to the steel. The section on cast-in method deals with factors that affecting the quality of the metallurgical bond between the coated steel and the aluminum castings. The results of microstructure characteristics of the bonding are presented in the microstructure characterization section. A push-out experiment and the results obtained using this method is described in the section of bond strength/mechanical property.

Fusion of an 86-percent euxenite concentrate with ammonium sulfate was investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Reaction for 4 hours at 400° C results in conversion of both the rare-earth elements and the titanium-columbium components to water-soluble compounds. Similar results are obtained with ammonium bisulfate. Stirring the fusion mass decreases the reaction time substantially. Alternatively, treating the fusion product with a 3-hour, 650° C calcining step renders the non-rare-earth constituents insoluble, thereby allowing selective leaching of a pure rare-earth fraction with an overall yield of 97 percent.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines initiated research to improve the safety and efficiency of transporting coal from deep underground mines using a balanced air-lift hydrohoist. A 50-m-high pilot-scale model was constructed and tested to evaluate the feasibility of hydraulically hoisting a coal-water slurry in a U-tube pipeline from the mine level to the surface with the assistance of compressed air. A prototype screw feeder is used to continuously compact and inject 5-cm or less run-of-mine coal into a pressurized 20-cm-diam pipeline. Production rates up to 40 metric tph at an airflow of 1.5 m3/min were achieved with the model, and coal size degradation was relatively minor. Modifications are in progress to achieve 100 tph at an airflow of 2.8 standard m3/min injected into the riser pipe. Pilot-scale results indicate that an air-lift hydrohoist system is a feasible, cost-effective alternative to conventional skip hoisting that can be installed in existing shafts or surface-drilled holes closer to the face area. Air-lift hydrohoisting offers advantages of infinitely adjustable slurry flow rates, reduced pressure at the point of coal injection, and flexible design that can be combined with hydraulic pumping. Proposed design changes are discussed for coal transport, mine layouts, ventilation, fire control, and escapeways using this system.

This is a case study on ground improvement using Stone columns at Kokrajhar in Assam which comes under seismic Zone V as per IS: 1893. The strata at site comprised of mostly fine sands with low SPTN values, fine content less than 10% and ground water table (GWT) at shallow depth. As ground water table subjected to seasonal variation, water table is considered at ground level for designing purpose. The geotechnical profile of the boreholes was analysed on the guidelines of IS 1893 (Part 1) -2016 and it was observed that the liquefaction potential of the soil layers is prominent and ground improvement is inevitable up to a depth of 9.5 m below existing ground level. In order to mitigate the liquefaction of soil layer, Stone columns were proposed. The in-situ soil is densified using wet top feed vibroreplacement method with an area replacement ratio of 16%, so that the relative density of the soil can be enhanced to prevent liquefaction risk. Correlation between relative density, fines content and increment of SPT N –value given by Tokimatsu and Yoshimi (1983) was used for designing purpose. Field tests such as SPTs were carried out at site to validate the extent of SPT (N) improvement. Detail comparison of pre and post density, SPT N values and CRR values were discussed in this paper.

One by one new metals come to share the burden of modern industry. Long before the Christian era potters and glass workers employed fine and costly blue pigments that contained cobalt. Cobalt blue class has been found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many of the colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients, however, were apparently unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt, and it was not until late in the 17th century that the existence of the element was recognized, Writers in the Middle Ages referred to "cobalos" as an evil spirit that haunted mines and caused trouble to the miners. Subsequently the German worms "Kobold," meaning goblin, came to be applied to any baffling mineral and particularly to minerals that resembled ores but failed to yield metal when smelted. Even to-day there is something of an air of mystery about cobalt, and a medieval cloak of secrecy still surrounds many of the metallurgical processes employed in its production. "Zaffre" was mentioned about the middle of the sixteenth century by Biringuccio, and in 1735 the metal war, first prepared by G. Brandt. To preparation of cobalt compounds, however, must have been carried on in at least a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits of Schneeberg in 1470. By 1790 there were 25 works engaged in the industry, rust of them located in Saxony, but the total output of these works probably did not exceed 300 tone of cobalt annually, mostly in the fore of smalt. The smalt which contained approximately 6 per cent cobalt was sold in Venice in 1520 at about 16 cents a pound. A few refineries in Holland supplied the Irish linen trade, contributed a farce amount to the Dutch linen industries, and alto provided smaller quantities for the manufactuer of litmus in Holland. Inflation and burgeoning costs are two among many factors which have generated a new surge of interest in "fringe benefits" (sometimes referred to as "supplementary remuneration" or "supplementary compensation"). Other specialized forms of compensation ("perks", in the vernacular) such as company cars, windowed offices, etc., which also are the subjects of current study, are outside the scope of this paper. For businesses, interest in fringe benefits is based on concern for employees? welfare, compliance with government requirements, and an increasingly burdensome impact on bottom lines. In 1980, according to Fred D. Lindsey in the October 1980 issue of Nation's Business, employee benefits will cost American employers an estimated $420 billion. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "some fringes!" Indeed, few if any administrators consider employee benefits as fringes. Employee benefits impact other major areas of a company's operations as well. As listed by Beadle (1980), these areas include employee relations, collective bargaining, short-term costs, long-range funding, manpower planning, compliance with legislation, taxation for the company and for the employee, corporate image in the community, competitiveness for staff, communications, administration, claims cost containment, etc., etc.

Worldwide BOF-based steel plants are faced with demanding environmental requests and rising energy costs. For cleaning of primary gases from the BOF the scrubbing technology is worldwide adapted. For wet-scrubbers there is a direct relation between pressure loss and achievable clean gas dust content. Subsequently main energy consumers within Gas Cleaning Plants are the driving fans. To evaluate actual performance and to identify optimization measures extensive field measurements at existing Gas Cleaning Plants were performed. The operational results from various BOF plants worldwide will be presented and benchmarked. As a conclusion, advanced control strategies for reduced energy consumption and lower environmental impact were developed and implemented.

The easiest way to mine valuable orebodies is through the use of explosives and well-planned blasting layouts that produce fragmentation profiles designed specifically for conveyance equipment in underground mines. The design of blasting patterns is specific to not only the explosives being used but also the rock or ore type being fragmented. Many blasting designs are based solely on the experience of those developed for similar orebodies in terms of properties and orientation or individuals that have some blasting experience.The primary technical objective of this paper is to outline a unique methodology for determining underground blasting methodologies (developing specific blasting parameters) commensurate with explosive energies and rock/ore equations of state for a narrow-vein gold property located in Northern Quebec and for underground mines in general.The procedures developed are to define the desired fragmentation specification so that a specific thermodynamic break is generated, taking into account powder factor, energy factor, tonnages, explosive energies and distribution along with blasthole diameter and orebody orientation for a specific set of explosive and dynamic rock/ore properties. Determining dynamic modulus values for the ore using seismic sensors to measure P- and S-wave velocities, the aforementioned parameters will be utilised to set the design constraints to maximise recovery and minimise overbreak and dilution.New underground blasting software (AEGIS) will use thermodynamic break in conjunction with defined fragmentation profiles to create an array of blasting parameters used to design and plan ring layouts. This software will also allow mining planners, prior to drilling and loading a production blast, to appraise future intended blasting patterns to minimise the potential of diluting ore with host rock and the likelihood of damaging mine support structures.CITATION:Roy, D, Williams, T and Preston, C, 2015. Three types of uncatalyzed diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems, three types of high-temperature disposable filter elements (DFEs), and one diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC) were evaluated in underground mine conditions for their effects on the concentrations and size distributions of diesel aerosols. Those effects were compared with the effects of a standard muffler. The experimental work was conducted directly in an underground environment using a unique diesel laboratory developed in an underground experimental mine. The DPF systems reduced total mass of aerosols in the mine air approximately 10-fold for light-load and 20-fold or more for high-load test conditions. The DFEs offered similar reductions in aerosol mass concentrations. The efficiency of the new DFEs significantly increased with accumulation of operating time and buildup of diesel particulate matter in the porous structure of the filter elements. A single laundering process did not exhibit substantial effects on performance of the filter element. The effectiveness of DPFs and DFEs in removing aerosols by number was strongly influenced by engine operating mode. The concentrations of nucleation mode aerosols in the mine air were found to be substantially higher for both DPFs and DFEs when the engine was operated at high-load modes than at low-load modes. The effects of the DOC on mass and number concentrations of aerosols in mine air were relatively minor when compared to those of the DPF and DFE systems.

"The Phalen Colliery, the Cape Breton Development Corporation's flagship, is now producing thermal and metallurgical grade coal in Eastern Canada's Sydney Coal Field. The colliery is a drift mine operating under the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Improved mechanization, including a 2200 tonne per hour cable conveyor, and the introduction of modern retreat longwall mining methods as part of the Phalen concept are now paying off in better productivity and low operating costs. Geological conditions within the coal field are consistent with plans for ever greater outputs in the 1990s. Although much of the current production improvement is related to uprated machine capacity and simplified mines planning there is potential for even further development in the areas of maintenance, process control and engineering. Human resource development will also be a key factor. These programs are now well under way and Phalen Colliery is poised for top results in the 1990s. Comparison of the CBDC's top producer with similar operations elsewhere in the world, quantifies that potential.IntroductionAn exciting new mining project which has recently started production on Canada's East Coast has been conceived and designed to be one of the most modern and productive coal mining operations in North America.As with all mining operations, the business is basically that of material transportation. Daily, the product is transported many kilometres from the underground face to the surface and then to washing facilities. Men, materials and equipment are transported to and from the surface and the operating faces and services, such as electrical power, ventilating air, fresh water, discharge water, communications and compressed air are supplied throughout the operation to cover operating requirements. "In 1879, when the Dominion government initiated its controversial program of industrial promotion, iron smelting in Canada was limited to one company producing coke iron on the mainland of Nova Scotia and three small charcoal blast furnaces in Quebec. There was no steel production. By the eve of the First World War, iron and steel were being produced in very large quantities, the companies active in 1879 had disappeared and new centres of integrated iron and rolled steel production at Hamilton, Sydney and Sault Ste. Marie had come to resemble the industry as we know it today. The most dramatic change was that at Sydney, Nova Scotia, where in the early 1900s, two steelmaking companies established works. The Sydney developments have been explained as the result of resource discovery and technical change. W.J. Donald, in his authoritative account of the Canadian iron and steel industry, observes:(1) ""The most rapid growth of the Canadian iron and steel industry has occurred since 1897 ... The remarkable growth has been caused largely by the new conditions of the industry. The discovery and use of Newfoundland ores, together with the availability of Cape Breton coal, has made the Nova Scotia industry not only possible but profitable .... It is a safe conclusion that the Canadian industry would not have been an important one, had it not been for the discovery of the Michipicoten and especially the Wabana (Newfoundland) ores:' Donald also argues that metallurgical progress had been necessary to render the ores valuable. ""Newfoundland ores ... contain a considerable amount of phosphorus, and were made available for steel-making by recent inventions:' The purpose of this paper is to re-examine Donald's story. It will be argued that the origin of steel-making at Sydney is somewhat more complicated than Donald has indicated. The difficulty with Newfoundland ore extended beyond its phosphorus content and a resolution required more than the basic open hearth furnace identified by Donald. Moreover metallurgical change was only one of several developments necessary to induce industrial investment at Sydney. Surprisingly, however, the discovery of iron ore in the late nineteenth century does not appear to be part of the explanation."

The Bureau of Mines designed and constructed a series of calibration models for geophysical borehole logging. A nominal hole diameter of 3 inches was selected as representative of typical core holes drilled for mining and engineering purposes, although additional hole diameters of 2, 5, and 8 inches are provided in one of the models for determination of empirical correction factors for variations in hole diameter. The physical properties of the models were determined by laboratory analyses of drill core samples and evaluated statistically for reliability. This report outlines the location of the models, elements of design and construction, and results of the laboratory tests. The models are available at the Denver Federal Center, Denver, Colo., for use by Government agencies and private industry to calibrate logging equipment for measurements of density, sonic velocity, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity.

Sub-micron sized boron carbide powders have been synthesized in a non-transferred arc thermal plasma reactor. Precursors for this synthesis are boric acid or boron oxide powders and methane. The powders produced were characterized in terms of size, shape and purity. Methods to increase the purity of the product were evaluated and included hot water leaching to remove unreacted oxides and controlled temperature, air roasting to remove excess carbon. Theoretical results are also presented on the thermodynamics and mechanisms of the synthesis reactions.

THE cause of silicosis and its prevention have held the attention of medical men and mine operators for many years and at the present rime the study of this disease is more than ever to the fore, even though a considerable abatement in the incidence of silicosis has been noted of late. This abatement is due to individual and collective efforts. The Industry is keenly alive to the situation and much research is being carried on. Silica dust is assumed to be a contributing factor in the cause of silicosis. How it acts progressively in the early silicoric is nor fully understood. As the study advances, more effective measures of control may be evolved. At present the Industry has three known methods of reducing the incidence: 1. By thorough X-ray examination of all applicants, with special reference to chest conditions. Those who are considered to be susceptible to the disease are prevented from entering the industry. 2. Thorough ventilation of the mine. 3. Control of tuberculosis in mining centres and removal of miners when first symptoms of tuberculosis become apparent. In 1934, the Ontario Mining Association formed a Committee, known as the Technical Silicosis Research Committee, to study and supervise work on problems related to silicosis. This Committee obtained the full-rime services of a mining engineer to carry our research work at the mines in the Province of Ontario. The Ontario Mining Association has also provided funds for the purpose of carrying on research work along pathological and biological lines. This work is being done in the Department of Medical Research of the University of Toronto, in the Banting Institute, under the supervision of Sir Frederick Banting. The Silicosis Committee work in full cooperation with the doctors in the Banting Institute and provide material from the mines for the it use.

Tunnel excavation while mining is not often performed in North America primarily due to access constraints in both operations. Referencing European approaches for long distance tunneling, the Devil?s Slide Tunnel project has applied innovation and technology to provide the ability to overcome this unique challenge. The Devil?s Slide Tunnel requires the construction of twin bore tunnels excavated based on sequential excavation method (SEM) construction methods using New Austrian Tunneling Methods (NATM) principles. The twin tunnels are approximately 9 m (30 ft) in diameter and 1,250 m (4,100 linear ft) in length. The purpose of this project is to reroute Route 1 from around the Devil?s Slide through the San Pedro Mountains crossing from Montara, CA along the south and into Pacifica, CA in the north. The Caltrans project was awarded in December 2006 for a total of $272,366,000. The job is an A+B job, thus the estimate scheme of final lining while tunnel excavation is important to save time. A+B is a method of rewarding a contractor for completing a project as quickly as possible. By providing a cost each working day, the contract combines the cost to perform the work (A) with the cost of impact to the public (B) to provide the lowest cost to the public. Concurrent mining while lining is achieved through a series of gantries and a set of tunnel forms allowing the pass-through of the excavation equipment. The tunnel lining operation passes through several phases of work that are dependent upon the progress of the tunnel excavation process. This involves unique milestones, such as the evolution of the ventilation system, development of an enlarged cross passage to allow equipment to access each tunnel from within the tunnel and, finally, the installation of an invert prior to arch lining that limits the continuity of the final lining operation.

This paper is concerned with an analysis of a number of failures of large-size, hypervelocity light gas gun chambers and barrels. A brief description of the light gas gun principle and of the various types of guns is first given. The failures and the investigations carried out are then described in detail, with the failures divided into two groups. The first group comprises those failures caused by certain conditions to which the guns may be submitted, and includes, for example, severe local heating of the bore surface causing hardening and cracking of the steel. These conditions were accidental and steps were taken to prevent them. The remaining failures were due to faults in the material or in the heat-treatment, manufacturing or assembling procedures. Specific problems, such as hydrogen embrittlement, and the use of high strength gun barrels above their ductile-brittle transition temperature by preheating prior to firing, are briefly considered. As noted by McKinstry (1948), "How to deal with erratic high samples is one of the knottiest problems in ore estimation." He described a variety of approaches and methods to alleviate the problem through the averaging and weighing of assay data and by "cutting" or "clipping" of the erratic assays. Bird (1991) elaborated on ways of dealing with the nugget effect (erratics). He listed several procedures for cutting. Bird's list has been reproduced and/or added to by several authors including Vallee (1992) and Stone and Dunn (1993). Missing from each of these otherwise excellent reviews is a definition, description or guideline to recognition of an "erratic," or just where or when cutting is warranted or justified.

The iron-ore beneficiation and shiploading facilities of the Marcona Mining Company are at San Nicolas Bay which is on the Peruvian coastal desert about two hundred and seventy miles south of Lima. The mines are at elevation of 2,500 ft. Crude ore is transported from the Mine primary crushers to the beneficiation plants by ten miles of overland belt conveyors. After the predominantly magnetic ore is reduced to minus 3/4 in. in the secondary crushing plant, the ore is ground by rod and ball mills and concentrated with magnetic separators. The concentrate slurry is pumped to a thickening and filtering installation for desliming and dewatering. Pelletizing is accomplished with a Lurgi and also a Dravo-Lurgi machine. Deep-water shiploading facilities are available close to the beneficiation plants. Figure 1 shows a flowsheet of the general operation. Pelletizing operations are scheduled 24 hours a day and 365 days per year. A maximum tonnage rate with a high percentage of operating time is necessary to produce the three and one half million tons per year required from the two pellet lines. Process control is a major responsibility and of primary concern to all Operating personnel. The particle size, moisture, and chemical composition of the filter cake must be closely controlled to get uniform high-grade pellets. Key points are sampled routinely and analyzed on a two-hour basis to provide the necessary structure and chemical data to maintain a superior final product. The iron content of the pellets is held between 65.3 and 65.8 percent with 4.0 percent Si02. Sulfur is below 0.04 percent and copper is below 0.02 percent in the finished pellet.

The required reclamation of land disturbed by surface coal mining often results in the creation of some over steepened slopes which are prone to rapid erosion and sediment production. This natural activity on such slopes is not desirable nor allowed under current regulations. Experience has indicated that novel approaches must be devised to address the problem. Research conducted on field sites in Missouri has indicated that construction, during the reclamation and grading processes, of a man-made drainage system will control the erosion. The drainage system must replicate or exceed the natural system in terms of drainage density and channel frequency. Basic design considerations will be summarized in this paper and field results shown.
