ALTHOUGH the corrosion resistance of magnesium and its alloys is closely related to iron content, there has been no direct measurement of the solid solubility of iron in magnesium. Bulian and Fahrenhors;1 and Mitchel]2 agree that pure iron or a limited terminal solid solution crystallizes from the Mg-rich liquid. For this reason a magnetic-moment method was selected to estimate that portion of the total iron content which is not in solid solution. Since iron in solid solution in magnesium cannot contribute to ferromagnetism, the difference between chemical and magnetic-iron analyses should yield the solid solubility. By experimentation it was found that the melting of pure sublimed magnesium (99.995 wt pet purity) in Armco-iron crucibles at about 800°C is a convenient way to introduce small amounts of iron. Melts retained 5, 10 and 20 min at 800°C analyzed 0.003,, 0.005,, and 0.018 & 0.001 weight pet Fe, respectively, after being stirred, heated to 850°C, and cast into graphite molds. The as-cast alloys were pickled in acid (dilute HC1 + HNO3), annealed at 600°C for 3 days, scalped on a lathe to remove the pitted surface, pickled again, extruded at about 100°C to 3-mm wire, reannealed 41/2 days at 500°C, and water-quenched. The specimens were again scalped, pickled, and used both for chemical and for magnetic analysis. Most of the precautions described were intended to prevent iron pickup by contact with tools or superficial iron enrichment by volatilization of magnesium during heat-treatment. It is believed that the specimens ultimately used for test were homogeneous and characteristic of phase equilibria at 500°C. Magnetic Analyses A susceptibility apparatus of the Curie type was used for magnetic analyses. Field strengths of up to 10,400 oersteds could be generated. By this method, an analytical balance measures the force of attraction which a calibrated magnetic field exerts on a suspended specimen. The force equation is as follows f/m = M dh/dy where f/m = force per unit mass of sample M = magnetic moment per unit mass dH/dy = magnetic field gradient The dH/dy characteristic of the instrument is determined by the use of a standard palladium sample, and the calibration is made independently for all values of H. Since a large finite field is required to saturate an assembly of ferromagnets, it is necessary to measure the apparent magnetic moment for increasing steps of H until a saturation value is obtained. The percentage of iron in the sample as free ferromagnetic iron may then be computed simply C= 100 (M1/M1) where C = percent content of undissolved iron in sample M1 = saturation magnetic moment of sample per unit mass M1 = saturation magnetic moment of iron per unit mass taken as 217 emu-cm per gm There is no serious difficulty in applying this method except for the unusual magnetic behavior of very fine particles of ferromagnetic substances. It has been found and is the basis for a widely accepted theory that with sufficient subdivision, the magnetic fields required to saturate and the coercive force after saturation rise to exceedingly high values. Recent work on precipitates of Fe and Co from copper solid solutions8 showed that about 5000 oersteds were necessary to approach saturation. The magnetic moments as a function of field strength measured in the present investigation are listed in Table I. Only the 0.018 wt pet Fe alloy yielded a magnetization curve with a fairly well-defined saturation plateau at 3.76x10 -2 emu-cm/ gm. This corresponds to 0.017 & 0.001 wt pet Fe in the alloy. This indicates that the solid solubility must be of the order of 0.001 wt pet Fe. The magnetic-moment data of the other two alloys are badly scattered, indicating that the amount of ferromagnetic iron in these samples is so low that the magnetic forces acting on them cannot be measured accurately by the analytical balance used. Nevertheless, the fact that even the 0.003, wt pet Fe alloy shows ferromagnetism indicates that the solid solubility must be below that value. "Gravitational forces have been found to be an important factor in defining the particle collection efficiency curve of inertial impactors for large particles. In general it was found that if the parameter G = gW /V 0 2 (g is the gravitational acceleration. w is the nozzle diameter and V 0 is the average fluid velocity at the nozzle throat) in greater than 10-3 the efficiency curve would shift to lower panicle sizes. No effect could be seen for lower values of G.IN'IRODUCTIONInertial impactors have long been used as classifiers for airborne particles. By proper design of the nozzles and flow rate it is possible to classify particles with a fairly sharp cut in the particle size range from approximately .02 µm to 50 µm. Because of inertial impactors wide usage they have been extensively studied calibrated and evaluated. Most of these studies have been experimental calibrations of single stages using monodisperse aerosol particles. However, due to impactor simplicity. i.e. a jet of particle laden air impinging upon a flat plate with large inertia particles crossing the streamlines and impacting upon the plate the impactor also lends itself to theoretical evaluation.The most comprehensive method for analyzing impactors theoretically is to use finite difference solutions to the Navier-Stokcs equations and solve for the velocity components and pressure at node points of a grid placed over the area of interest. Using iteration and relaxation techniques the value of the velocity vectors can be determined at these node points with good accuracy. Once the velocities arc known, theoretical particles of known size can be placed into the now field and their trajectories determined by analyzing their equation of motion using numerical methods.Rader and Marple (1985) have performed theoretical analysis on impactors and have included such factors as Ultra-Stoksian .drag and the physical diameter of the particle in their analysis. However, even with these· factors included, there appears to be discrepancy · between the experimental and theoretical results when the particle size is larger than approximately 4 or 5 µm. One possible reason for this discrepancy could be the effect of gravity on the particle as it passes through the impactor. Therefore, a program was initiated to study the effects of gravitational forces on the collection· efficiency of particles in impactors. The results of that study arc presented here."

The work-principle method was developed for theoretically resolving toxic fumes from non-ideal charge formulations. The whole description of a wanted process refers to macroscopic changes resulting from removing and imposing constraints that work one at a time to chronologically render trajectory terminal (key) states. The trajectory resolution utilizes a thermodynamic quasi-potential or negative work function, and numeric results require some appropriate standard thermodynamic (equilibrium) reaction code TDRC. The underlying method is unable to restrict reactions, tailor the work output or resolve states within the trajectory transitions, so the trajectory terminology is used somewhat figuratively. The work-principle model has the working fluid (reaction material) interacting with a tremendous reservoir (chamber air and walls), while forecasting the work performed upon a mechanical agent. Within the underground test chamber, the widening fume zone undergoes a decline in temperature, a reduction in reaction rates, resulting in out-of- equilibrium circumstances at the Q*-point, representing the measurement state. Rather than coping with the hard issues of non-equilibrium, the toxic fumes are resolved numerically for the Z-point, rendered by a zero-net- interaction energy constraint. Though other techniques require complex equation-of-state EOS for the whole trajectory, the work-principle formulation eludes the issue, requiring an EOS that works just for the terminal-state. Under the circumstances, the Z-state is reconcilable with the ideal-gas domain, and relevant TDRC results yield the restricted state in a numerical way for different charge formulations. The work principle makes it hard to remedy or to tamper with the resulting Z-point fumes: non-macroscopic trajectory readjustment is forsaken, terminal states are results rather than stipulations, and resetting the EOS formula constants would be ineffectual. Though the non-equilibrium portion remains unresolved, it is noteworthy that the work principle rigidly fixes the Z-state, thereby reducing the uncertainty for rendering reaction-rate models characterizing the non-equilibrium Z-Q* transition. Though more refinements are needed, some Z-point fume results are included to illustrate the threshold (minimum) resolving capacity of the work- principle formulation.

This paper discusses the impact of taxes at the state and federal level on typical on-shore oil and gas exploration economics in the USA. Taxes considered are the windfall profits excise tax, state production (or severance) taxes, state income tax, and federal income tax. Also considered will be market prices for oil and gas in the USA. The effect of government take as a percent of revenue, on rate of return, discounted Payout, and discounted cumulative cash flow is shown on the attached tables. The conclusion drawn is that tax laws, while rarely the most important factor to be considered when drilling a well, can have significant impact on the profitability of oil and gas ventures, and should be considered when determining where to drill. Hypothetical exploration wells were analyzed for the impact of tax laws on project profitability. The results of this study show that when factors other than taxes are postulated to be the same (such as producing rate, capital, operating costs, and prices), cash flow can vary by as much as 68% due to the differences in the tax laws. Other significant findings for the cases studied include: (a) that discounted payout varied by as much as 1.8 years, (b) that rate of return differed by up to 67% and (c) the total tax rate as a percentage of revenue had a maximum variance of 33%.

Self-diffusion in iron has been measured during rapid a-r transformations using a variant of the Kryukou and Zhukhovitskii diffusion method. The study was performed by thermally cycling iron foils (1 to 6 cpm) through the transformation (=910°C). Some foils have been subjected to over 1000 cycles and some have spent more than 15 pct of their total diffusion time in the process of transformation. The experimental results show that the a-r transformation has no measurable effect on self-diffusion in iron. The study is completed by a quantitative analysis of mechanisms which can affect the diffusion rate during the transformation. The analysis confirms the experimental results. SINCE diffusion is an important factor in many solid-state transformations, it is of interest to study how it is affected by the stresses generated during these transformations. Clinard and Sherby1'2 were the first to make a study along these lines. They measured diffusion coefficients in Fe-FeCoV couples subjected to slow thermal cycling (1.5 cph) through the a-r transformation range. They found an enhancement of diffusion by a factor of about two. The purpose of the present paper is to report measurements of the self-diffusion coefficient of iron during much more rapid thermal cyclings (1 to 6 cpm) through the a-r transformation (-910°C). These more rapid cyclings produce higher strain rates during the transformation and should emphasize any possible influence of transformation upon diffusion. EXPERIMENTAL Iron foils, 25 to 35 µ thick, were cold-rolled from 99.92 pct pure iron and annealed in pure helium for 2 hr at 870°C; the resulting grain diameter was about 150 µ. Specimens 0.5 by 8 cm were cut from the foils and I7e55 was vapor deposited on one of their surfaces. A 38 gage alumel-chrome1 thermocouple was spot welded in the middle of one of the specimen long edges, Fig. 1. Two 38 gage chrome1 wires were also spot welded along the same edge on each side of the thermocouple; they were placed 2.5 cm apart and used for electrical resistance measurements. In order to prevent twisting and crumpling, the specimens were pinched between two quartz plates 0.1 by 1 by 7 cm and the assembly was close fitted into a 1 cm ID quartz tube. Four holes were drilled through the tube to let the 38 gage wires out: these were connected to the recording equipment by means of extension wires. 20-gage nickel wires fixed at both ends of the specimens were used to thermally cycle the foils by Joule heating. The above described device was placed in a 2.7 cm ID quartz tube which in turn was placed in a tubular furnace. Either a pure helium atmosphere or circulating hydrogen was used during the experiments. Specimens were subjected to thermal cycles between a minimum temperature To and a maximum temperature Tm at rates ranging from 1 to 6 cpm. This was obtained by maintaining the furnace at a constant temperature near the minimum temperature To and periodically passing an electric current through the specimen. Cooling was achieved by heat losses to the surroundings. The forms and periods of cycles were varied from one specimen to another; however, each specimen was subjected to one type of cycle only. The temperature and electrical resistance variations of the specimens were recorded as a function of time. The temperature curves were used for diffusion calculations while the electrical resistance curves were used to monitor the transformation and to determine its starting point and its approximate duration. Diffusion was measured by the method developed by Kryukov and zhukhovitskii3 and modified by Angers and Claisse.4,5 In this method a metallic foil is coated on one side with a radioactive isotope and the activity is measured periodically on both sides during the diffusion anneal. Many tailings storage facilities in the Rustenburg region of South Africa’s North-West Province are founded on reworked residual norite derived from the weathering of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. With the implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, increased emphasis is placed on robust material characterisation, but laboratory testing is challenging. The results of Oedometer and undrained triaxial shear testing support a nonlinear failure envelope for effective stresses below the yield stress, transitioning to linear behaviour at higher stresses.

Mine productivity, measured by the output of minerals per manshift, depends on a number of factors including physical conditions of the minable seam, type of mining equipment, management techniques, worker attitudes and governing jaws and regulations. The greatest scope of improving productivity lies, perhaps, in modifying physical conditions to an advantage and using highly productive equipment. In the case of coal mines, increased productivity can be achieved by (i) obtaining prior knowledge of the mineable property, e.g., the grade and thickness of, the coal seam, presence of sand channels, faults, etc., (ii) eliminating conditions that hamper production, e.g., high emissions of methane and water, and (iii) using more productive mining techniques. Conoco/Consol's (Conoco Inc. and Consolidation! bal Company, a fully-owned subsidiary) horizontal drilling system was developed with the hove objectives in mind. It can drill 75 to 1001 in diameter boreholes to depths of more than 600 1 and maintain the borehole in a preselected horizon. Such boreholes can be utilized for premining exploration of the coal seam, for removing methane and water and in devising mining techniques with high productivity. The purpose of this paper is to describe the horizontal drilling system briefly and to discuss its applications in the above-mentioned- areas.

Fullers' earth is a clay-like substance, which has the property of decolorizing or clarifying oils. An ultimate chemical analysis shows it to differ from most ordinary clays in having usually a high percentage of combined water and a low amount of alumina. There is probably a large amount of hydrous silica present. Fullers' earth possesses little or no plasticity, and in order to work properly has to be ground very fine. A chemical analysis is of little value at present in determining its quality; only a practical test suffices. Up to about two years ago all of the fullers' earth used in this country was imported from England; but about that time deposits were discovered in Florida, "† and since then rumors of its occurrence have been coming from all parts of the country. Next to the Florida deposits of fullers' earth, those of South Dakota are the most extensive thus far discovered in this country. The earth was first discovered near Fairburn, Custer county, and other deposits have since been prospected at Argyle, Minnekahta and other localities. Owing the greater fluidity of the filling now in use, it is sometimes necessary to resort to square-sets, both at the ground floor and above, the roofs and walls are generally enough to permit stoping without timber, except for ground and occasional stacks on the rills.Sufficient area of ground floor has been beaten out to start overhead stoping, the dome back is partly formed, with its apex a rise which connects with the mullock-pass reticulation.(Sce 1 showing this reticulation in diagrammatic form.)

Sampling in a continuous flotation plant is always a challenge as these plants are meant for production and not research work. The continuous flotation operation used in this work produced three sets of data: the first was based on overall plant performance, done by sampling the feed, concentrate, and tails; the second was based on the roughers row cell-by-cell; the third set of results came from the cleaners/recleaners row cell-by-cell. The highest recovery results in all sets of data obtained lie in the particle size ranges of 40 μm and 100 μm, which is in agreement with results by other researchers in the same field. King’s theoretical (model) recovery proved to be able to fit the experimental data but there is still room for improvement as the sum of squared error ranged between 400– 1200. Data obtained in continuous flotation operation could be used with batch flotation test-work to characterize scale-up of flotation cells.

The outstanding environmental management initiatives undertaken by Novacoal at its Western Main Site near Lithgow in New South Wales over the past five years are detailed in this paper. These initiatives have been based on a combination of proven and innovative investigation and implementation techniques, close consultation with regulatory authorities and full support by colliery management. The results of these initiatives have enabled the colliery to exceed its pollution control obligations from a base well below industry standards. The initial poor condition of the mine was the result of over 50 years of traditional mining which paid little regard to environmental management. The transformation of the colliery within such a short period, with limited capital, is considered a model for the N.S.W. coal industry.

"The paper describes the results of stripping of copper production dusts by leaching with aqueous soda, nitric acid solutions and recovery from solutions resulting in the production of lead sulphate, tribasic lead sulfate (TBLS), ammonium perrhenate, zinc, copper-cadmium cake.The combination of two stripping operations under chosen optimal conditions allows the recovery of 98% rhenium, 82% lead, 92 % copper, and 96% zinc and cadmium each. The major amount of rhenium (~ 80%) is recovered at the carbonization stage, and other metals - at the nitric acid leaching stage.Lead sulfate was precipitated by mixing solutions resulting from carbonization and leaching. Tribasic lead sulfate was produced by dissolving lead sulfate in sodium hydroxide solutions. Rhenium was recovered from mother liquor resulting from lead sulfate precipitation by liquid-liquid extraction and zinc was recovered from raffinates. Trialkylamine (TAA) was used as an extractant for rhenium recovery and di-2- ethylhexylphosphoric acid was used for zinc recovery. Optimal liquid-liquid extraction parameters have been defined allowing the recovery of 96% rhenium in crude ammonium perrhenate and 94% zinc in sulfuric acid solution. Based on the experimental data, the flowchart for dust processing to produce salable products - lead, rhenium, zinc salts has been suggested."

The MSHA prescribed method for the determination of quartz in airborne respirable-dust samples from underground coal mines is the P-7 method, a combination of low-temperature, radio-frequency ashing (LTA) and infrared analysis (IR). There is no prescribed procedure for quartz analysis in bulk samples of coal and host rock. Dispersive infrared (IR), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods are most commonly used for the analysis of quartz in powders. Several aspects of the experimental procedures, such as the preparation of the analysis sample from bulk samples, ashing techniques, scanning procedures, peak measurement location, calibration techniques, sample amounts, size consist and data interpretation, affect the results from each of the methods differently. Significant differences in analytical results obtained from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) on the same samples are reported. All studies point to the need for reliable quartz analysis methods. In a recent research program, a procedure for preparing bulk-coal and host-rock samples for quantitative quartz analysis was developed. Further, the results from X-ray diffractometry and infrared spectroscopy for quartz content on identical samples were compared. Calibrations with pure and mixed standards were used to assess the influence of particle-size distribution, matrix and calibration on the analytical results. In this paper, several issues concerning the measurement of quartz in the samples of coal, host-rock and airborne respirable dust from mines are outlined and quantified.

A large opencast gold mining company in Africa had just completed a feasibility study for the expansion of the operations. A traditional net present value project valuation methodology had been used that showed a very positive net present value (NPV). The project team had conducted a qualitative risk assessment that identified and logged all potential project risks and had subjectively incorporated ?risk? via the discount rate and other assumption contingencies around gold price expectations, operating parameters etc. Management requested that an independent quantitative risk modelling approach be adopted to obtain a better understanding of the impact of risk on the overall project valuation and confidence level in the final valuation. A detailed project valuation model was configured in the Carbon Modelling Technology and the stochastic modelling module used to perform the Monte Carlo simulations. Analysis of historical operational performance data relating to actual achievements versus planned and budget determined the historical variability of the underlying parameters as well as variance to budget. This was done at a detailed level for mining rates and costs, processing rate, costs and recovery, and other operational efficiency measures. External market assumptions relating to gold price, exchange rate, and inflation were modelled and the dependency between them modelled using a copula. This case study will demonstrate the approach taken to building and populating the quantitative risk model and the overall results of the Monte Carlo simulation. The final valuation demonstrated that the project had a 44 percent probability of an NPV less than zero i.e. 44 percent chance of project finance loss.

The Harts Range deposit, owned by Olympia Resources is located some 130 kms northeast of Alice Springs, in central Australia (part of Australia’s Northern Territory). The core economic minerals here are industrial grade garnet and alumino magnesio hornblende (AMH). The resource contains an estimated 2.3 million tonnes of recoverable garnet and 6.2 million tonnes of recoverable AMH, making Harts Range one of the most significant abrasive medium deposits in the world. Part of the general marketing axiom of Olympia Resources is to make high quality products from the garnet and also a special series of blended garnet/AMH products to match the needs for other sectors of industry. The deposit mineralization is of alluvial origin and thus, requires no significant liberation regimes. Over 50% of the head feed is in the form of SiO2/quartz and as much as 17% is –63micron clay slimes and mica. Original pilot scale testwork for flowsheet development centred around fairly conventional wet gravity systems, with spiral concentrators being the pre-eminent separating device. To a point, this type of flowsheet was going to achieve some of the aims albeit fairly predictably. The one area that this circuit would be very limited though is in the recovery of the very coarsest of the medium SG minerals. This was going to be a very important and longer-term costly flaw. Amongst the highest demand, greatest value of products to be produced will be the range of garnet & AMH in the +600 microns sector. A flowsheet dominated by spirals would be fated to forfeit a significant proportion of these coarse minerals to tails. At the Outokumpu Technology P/L test facilities in Perth, testwork was conducted using a pilot scale Floatex® Density Separator, the LPF-230 model. Using a twin stage approach, whereby a primary Floatex® underflow reports directly to a secondary Floatex®, recovery of the economically important +600 micron garnet was increased from 65% in the spirals-only flowsheet to 95% using the Floatex® based flowsheet. Finally, the other significant aspect of this approach is in substantial simplification of the circuit required and a huge reduction in plant footprint. Also, the nature of using hindered settling provides substantial opportunities for process control and automation.

The Coxheath copper mine is situated on the north side of the Coxheath hills and opposite the French Vale, at a distance of about 10 miles southwest of Sydney, Cape Breton county. The deposit was discovered in 1880, and the first work on the property was carried out with local capital. Lacer some Boston men became interested and formed a Company to finance the undertaking. This group operated the mine intermittently for approximately 20 years, spending close to one million dollars on the undertaking. Three shafts were sunk to depths of 110, 190, and 340 feet, and further underground workings to the extent of approximately one-half mile were driven. Also, an extensive surface programme was carried out. in which many test pits and hundreds of feet of trenches were dug, Early in the summer of 1928 the Arno Mines, Limited, optioned the property and immediately started an exploration campaign. A series of trenches were dug along the parallel vein system, and over 4,000 feet of diamond-drilling was done. The results obtained were so encouraging that a mining plant was erected in the fall of chat year and No. 2 shaft was drained. A complete new plant was installed, consisting of one 120 h.p. Fairbanks-Morse Diesel engine, direct connected to a Sullivan angle compound, air compressor; an 80 h .p. Leonard boiler, which supplies power for the 7 by 11 Ingersoll-Rand hoist; and a Sullivan class C steel sharpener and oil furnace. Two 250-gallon Cameron pumps, one operated by steam and the other by air, were placed in the mine so that, in case of a break-down, the mine would not be flooded.

The Iron Ore Company (IOC) of Canada Mining and Operations Departments expressed an interest in reducing the amount of oversize material (>1 m × 1 m × 1 m) being produced and its subsequent downstream effects including in-pit sorting and reduction, damage to mobile equipment, and significant delays in the loading pockets and the primary crushers. To achieve this goal an oversize reduction project was undertaken by the mine and to date has significantly improved upon baseline measures.One key approach used to reduce the amount of oversize was the implementation of thicker emulsion. The introduction of a thicker emulsion into the blastholes provided more resistance to the forces created by dynamic water and reduced the infi ltration of the emulsion into the cracks and fissures of the rock mass. Blast results showed reduced amounts of oversize and more consistent fragmentation throughout the muck piles. Additionally, a significant reduction in nitrates leached into the mine water discharge has been realised.To determine the effectiveness of the oversize reduction project, IOC used shovel based camera technology to assess fragmentation presented to the shovel at the digging face. A digital vision system (DVS) was installed on one of the shovels to capture images that were stamped with global positioning system (GPS) locations. A large population of digital images was analysed to produce a robust fragmentation distribution baseline that was used as one of the mine key performance indicators (KPI). Changes to blasting practice were subsequently measured against the baseline KPI to assess effectiveness.

"INTRODUCTIONWhile today’s mine planning of land-based ore deposits follows methods, which are well established, mining standards for the deep-sea have not established. Having gained a basic understanding of geological settings, there is still a lack of tools and methods to assess and plan future mining projects in the deep-sea. In the framework of the “Blue Mining” research project (2014-2018) technologies and methods for the exploration and exploitation of deep-sea minerals are developed that will bring deep-sea mining a step closer. The “Blue Mining” project receives funding from the European Commission (EC; Framework Programme 7; GA No. 604500) and addresses all aspects of the value chain in the field of deep-sea mining. The project philosophy is that deep-sea mining is planned and executed in the most responsible manner: Ensuring societal benefits and profitability at acceptable resource utilization and lowest possible environmental footprint (Volkmann 2014).Inspired by the high-tech farming industry, a concept to mine seafloor manganese nodules (SMnN) was developed. Mining is considered to be similar to the potato harvest on land (Figure 1), which involves mining a field partitioned into long, narrow strips (Volkmann and Lehnen 2017). The proposed mining system composes of one mining support vessel (MSV), one or two self-propelled, crawler-type seafloor mining tools SMT(s) and different types of underwater vehicles. The MSV follows the mining route of the SMT(s), picking up the about potato-sized nodules from the seafloor. The ore is pre-processed in situ and is lifted on board of the MSV, where the ore is dewatered and loaded onto bulk carriers for transport to the purchaser. Processing and refining of ore is not subject of “Blue Mining” research."

"This paper revisits data from previous studies (Hernandez-Aguilar, 2010, 2011) to better understand the link between metallurgical performance and bubble size (Db) in the collection (pulp) zone of full-scale flotation systems. To obtain conclusive evidence exclusively related to the collection zone, the experiments were designed in those studies to control both the bubble generation method and the influence of the froth zone on the overall metallurgical performance in industrial and pilot-scale flotation columns. The results showed that generating small (1 mm) bubbles had a significantly higher beneficial effect on the recovery of coarse (> 75 µm) particles compared to the effect on fine (< 16 µm) particles. It was observed that, under certain practical conditions, the recovery of liberated coarse particles was close to zero, but could be recovered almost completely by reducing bubble size. The evidence revealed an apparent inconsistency of the so-called “k–PSb” model: at constant froth recovery, increasing Sb did not always result in higher recovery, as the model predicts. Overall, the evidence showed that it was not the Sb but the bubble size that proved to be a more reliable link to metallurgical performance. Only under highly suboptimal bubble size conditions (Db = 3 mm) did the froth zone seem to play a role, possibly reflecting an effect of pulp-zone bubble size on froth stability. However, for the most part, both the bubble generation method and the froth zone played inconsequential roles. An empirical model that better describes the kinetics of particle collection is proposed.INTRODUCTIONStudies showing the link between metallurgical performance and the interactions of bubbles and particles in the collection (pulp) zone of industrial flotation systems are scarce. A common belief among a number of mineral processing practitioners considers that “small” bubbles are favourable to recover “small” particles and that, conversely, “larger” bubbles are more efficient at floating “coarse” particles. However, perceptions like this are often substantiated by anecdotal evidence rather than by rigorous data analysis. What is the optimum bubble size for a particular case, how operating conditions can be adjusted to control a target bubble size, and whether the bubble size needs to be changed in the first place to optimize the operation of a flotation plant are questions that usually remain without solid answers.The studies reported by Hernandez-Aguilar (2010, 2011) were, in part, performed to test the effect of bubble size on flotation response and, thus, help address some of the above questions. The focus of the studies was to optimize the metallurgical grade-recovery performance of the Cu-Mo separation plant at Teck’s Highland Valley Copper mine (HVC). The outcome was compelling and significantly valuable: consolidated production data showed that in 2008 – the year when the recommendations from the studies started to be implemented – the Mo plant recovery was 89%, and gradually increased to 92% and 94% in 2009 and 2010, respectively, along with an increase in Mo concentrate grade. (Note: these production figures were not included in the publications quoted above; however, they were shown during an oral presentation at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors in 2011.)"
