"In this paper, the mining experience and challenges for the first right-handed longwall panel in the Pittsburgh seam are introduced. The longwall headgate T-junction experienced very high face convergence (up to 2 feet), accompanied by roof sag, floor heave, and rib loading. The headgate convergence was so large that, in a few places, it threatened longwall retreat and ultimately required the bottom to be re-graded.Different underground instruments, such as a roof scope, de-gas drill, tell-tale, laser meter, and Borehole Pressure Cell (BPC), were employed to explore the roof geology and to monitor the entry convergence and the stress changes in the pillar. In addition, the impact of other geologic factors, such as large overburden depth, laminated sandstone roof geology, soft floor, and large headgate equipment, were also analyzed. Subsequently, geotechnical solutions were provided to avoid or mitigate the impact of these challenging geologic factors.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that high horizontal stress will affect the stability of roof, floor, and ribs within underground mines. In general, the headgate entries will experience stress concentration for the right-handed longwall face. On the contrary, the stress concentration will be in the tailgate entries for the left-handed longwall face (Hasenfus and Su, 2006). Without the stress shadow, the stress concentration in the headgate for the first longwall panel may be more significant (Figure 1).A mine in the CONSOL Pennsylvania Operation was extracting the first right-handed longwall panel in the Pittsburgh seam, which created high horizontal stress concentrations at the longwall headgate. Because of concern over soft wet floor within the syncline, floor coal had been left in place on development. Early on, upon retreat, the longwall headgate T-junction experienced very high face convergence, accompanied by roof sag, floor heave, and rib loading. The floor heave was exacerbated by the presence of floor coal, which buckled upward near the center of the beltline. Roof movement was occasionally aggravated by laminated roof conditions, but was kept in check by aggressive supplemental support including cable bolts, yielding props, cribbing, and roof mesh. Rib bolting and rib mesh helped to further maintain the entryway stability by keeping sloughage at a minimum. Nevertheless, despite the heavy support, headgate convergence was so large that, in a few places, it threatened longwall retreat and ultimately required the bottom to be re-graded."

This paper presents numerical and experimen¬tal results dealing with the application of ferric ion oxidation of uranium in acidic media. Conclusions are derived from matching numerical results to experimental data taken on one-dimensional laboratory leaches using ore from a South Texas Coastal plain deposit. Since the numerical results can be made quite general, we are able to extract and quantify the effects of oxidant concentration, flow velocity, mass transfer, chemical kinetics, and competitive oxidant consumers (pyrite and molybdenite) on the experimental results. Our results suggest that the leaching of uranium is a mass transfer controlled while that of pyrite is kinetically controlled.

NCHRP Synthesis 418 (2011) entitled, “Developing Production Pile Driving Criteria from Test Pile Data” details the occurrence of dichotomy between pile Skin resistance and pile Tip resistance mobilizations at different times for different hammer blows during pile driving operations. With increasing usage of High Strain Dynamic Testing (HSDT) the engineering community started paying more attention to this occurrence of dichotomy resulting in overdriving, pile damage, increased claims, and loss of time. To overcome the dichotomy limitations of HSDT, NCHRP recommends, “the use of superposition to combine the back-calculated tip resistance from a blow on initial drive or from redrive with the back-calculated skin resistance from the early blows at the beginning of restrike”. However, the current practice of external mounted gauges and signal matching for a single blow are unable to evaluate independently the Skin resistance and Tip resistance to achieve the goal of determining the optimum Total Pile Capacity using the superposition. This paper discusses advancements of science and technology with sensors embedded at the pile top and pile tip, the data collected is analyzed by the state-of-the-art FDOT Method to determine Skin and Tip resistances independently for every blow. Independent Tip and Skin resistances each with a Resistance Factor can be summed up to obtain optimum Total Pile Capacity. Additional benefits of determining independent Skin and Tip resistances include obtaining lost skin capacity due to scour, due to pre-drilling/preforming and uplift tension capacity. Furthermore, the benefits of embedded sensors include increased quality control/quality assurance through 100% testing, accelerated construction, life cycle monitoring and asset management.

"A review of lI5 significant volcanogenic massive sulphide discoveries in the Canadian Precambrian during the past 65 years reveals that only 7% resulted from surface exploration methods aimed at depths below the effective reach of current geotechnical systems. This has been due to the relative ease of shallow discovery, resulting in the harvesting of ore deposits within 100 m of surface. This surficial layer has been more or less effectively supersaturated by routine exploration. In view of the fact that a mining district's metal content is not likely to be confined to a surficial layer, the time has come to explore the vertical dimension, prospecting for ore at depths in excess of 150 m in productive districts.Essential to this task is an understanding of the Precambrian volcanogenic ore deposit model. The deposits generally have .a tendency to be associated with the terminal phases of felsic volcanism, and to be located along certain time-stratigraphic horizons, marked by the products of volcanic exhalation. The significant massive sulphide deposits are discrete entities, ranging from the top 5% of deposits greater than 45 million tonnes in size, with a surface area of 0.30 km2, to median-sized deposits greater than 1.2 million tonnes in size with a surface area of 0.02 km2. These significant economic ore deposits range in value from $5.5 billion for the top 5% of deposits to $125 million for median-sized deposits. In terms of their frequency of occurrence, the former group has a 4% distribution and the median-sized deposits have a 15% distribution.An historical review of many of the principal Precambrian mining districts, such as Noranda and Flin Flon, shows that major tonnages are usually discovered during the initial phase of application of each new geotechnical search system, until carried to its ultimate limit of effective depth penetration. With the exception of the Noranda district, the mean depth of ore discovery in the other districts is still generally confined to within 50 m of surface.Targeting deep ore is difficult. One effective prospecting method is the detection of fracture-controlled mercury leakage haloes in outcrop (or core) above and peripheral to blind deposits. This technique has proved to be a useful pathfinder, and focuses attention on deposits buried at depths in excess of 700 m in some instances. Down-hole EM systems also promise to be effective in locating deposits previously bypassed by drilling. In addition, trend surface analysis programs of trace element geochemistry should be used as an aid to targeting ore by directing exploratory drilling along the plane of ore-hosting stratigraphy.By definition, mining districts have a proven ""favourability"" for the occurrence of ore. Discovery probabilities in these districts will be considerably enhanced if future search efforts are concentrated below a depth of 150 m, and more use is made of ""deep"" ore search systems coupled with sound geological reasoning. Deep drilling programs to a depth of800 m should initially be designed to search for the top 25% of deposits greater than 3.3 million tonnes in size, with a surface area of0.05 kmt. :a value of$310 million and a 12% frequency of occurrence; This can be accomplished for an over-all cost approximating $40,000 per drill hole. If the search depth is limited to 400 m, the over-all cost of each drill hole is $20,000, equivalent to expenditures routinely allocated to grassroots exploration drilling in the remote greenstone belts of the Precambrian. Depending on a company's objective, prospecting for deep ore offers a stimulating challange - though risky, it has its rewards."

The kinetics of iron leaching from ilmenite in hydrochloric acid solutions were investigated. The effects of pre-oxidation roasting, leaching temperature, and holding time on iron extraction rate were determined. The results obtained show that the extraction of iron is significantly enhanced by pre-oxidation roasting and increasing leaching temperature from 75 to 108 °C. The results of the kinetic analysis of the leaching data indicate that the reaction is controlled by diffusion through the product layer. The apparent activation energy for the extraction of iron has been calculated to be 62.5 and 55.1 kJ/mol for untreated and oxidized ilmenite, respectively.

Previous laboratory studies have demonstrated that the injection of small quantities of reverse wetting agents during water displacement can increase oil recovery from unconsolidated porous media.9 In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to determine more fully the effects of reverse wetting treatments and to clarify the mechanism by which increased oil recovery is effected. Water-oil displacements were performed in beds of 140-200 mesh silica sand. Hexylamine slugs (injected after 0.25 pore volume of water throughput), when adequate in size and concentration, were effective in promoting additional oil recovery. Their effectiveness increased with the quantity of amine injected. However, slugs of sufficient size and concentration to stimulate oil production at water flow rates of 34 ft/day did not do so at 4 ft/day. Visual studies in a glass grid micromodel have shown that the stimulation of oil production, via ayueous hexylamine, is a result of transient changes in the oil wettability of the pore walls. if the amine slug is of sufficient size and concentration to induce significant changes in the adhesion-tension, large continuous oil masses will be formed. if the superficial water velocity is high enough to result in rapid desorption of the amine, a favorable "wettobility gradient" may be established across the masses; under such conditions, high oil mobility is observed, and increased oil recovery results. INTRODUCTION It is generally agreed that the efficiency of oil displacement by water in porous media is limited in part by capillary forces which cause the retention of isolated masses of oil — resulting in the so-called "irreducible minimum oil saturation". Recent estimates10 indicate that there are about 220 billion bbl of petroleum in United States reservoirs which are not economically recoverable with present techniques (such as water flooding). This amounts to almost five times the known recoverable reserves. It has been recognized for some time that a suitable alteration in the water-oil interfacial tension and/or the contact angle, as measured between the water-oil interface and the solid surface, should result in better displacement efficiency. Surface active agents can be used as interfacial tension depressants to accomplish this objective,1,2,7 but unfortunately, the additional oil recovery is seldom commensurate with the treatment cost. In contrast to interfacial tension depressants, the effect of contact angle alterations on water-oil displacements has received relatively little attention in the literature. It is known that the wettability affects the displacement process.3,4,11 Displacements in water-wet systems generally result in lower residual oil saturations than those in oil-wet systems. The effect of "'transient" wettability alterations concurrent with the displacement process have been investigated by Wagner, Leach and coworkers,4,11 wherein it has been demonstrated that the establishment of water-wet conditions during water flooding of oil-wet, oil-saturated porous media is accompanied by significant increase in oil displacement efficiency. Michaels and Timminss studied the effects of transient contact angle alterations resulting from chromatographic transport of reverse wetting agents through unconsolidated sand. It was demonstrated that chromatographic transport of short-chain (C4 through C8) primary aliphatic amines can improve oil recovery and that the recovery increases with the quantity of amine injected (i.e., with either the amine concentration or the volume of the slug injected). Circumstantial evidence indicated that the increased displacement efficiency resulted primarily from transient changes in wettability of the porous medium. Spiral separators have been widely accepted as one of the most flexible gravity separation devices for several decades. The International Journal of Mineral Processing, 84, pp. 118 – 132 mentioned that spirals are for treating material too coarse for flotation and too fine for dense-media separation. Powder Technology V 102, pp 244 – 252, 1999 stated that there exists a genuine need for extending the performance envelope of spirals – whether to treat finer or coarser material than the traditional size ranges. In recent times there has been an upsurge in interest, particularly in the development of newer fine gravity separators. Spiral separators for the recovery of ultra-fine particles have a unique profile, pitch and features to ensure efficient performance. The flow on the spiral trough must be controlled to minimise turbulence that will entrain fine particles in the outer section of the trough. The experimental test work showed a movement of mass from the outer region towards the centre column of the spiral, i.e., from the fine tailings band towards the concentrate. As recovery on the spiral trough is a function of mass yield and grade, the ultra-fine 7 spiral had a better recovery than the HX5. This makes the UF7 an ideal rougher spiral. The Bureau of Mines has completed an investigation of the effectiveness of methane drainage in the Lower Sunnyside Coalbed at Kaiser Steel Corp.'s Sunnyside No. 1 Mine in Utah. Most of the previous at- tempts to drain methane gas using long horizontal holes were conducted in the Eastern Coal Province. From the high degree of success realized in these efforts and the large body of knowledge gained from associated research, it seemed natural to extend the technology to western coalfields. Previous work had indicated that properties affecting gas drainage were variable in the Sunnyside Coalbed. In an attempt to characterize these properties, four degasification holes were drilled from the out- side entries of an advancing section. The holes were drilled to lengths of 780, 1,680, 1,315, and 1,047 ft and produced initial flow rates of 50,000, 180,000, 340,000, and 240,000 f t3/d, respectively. A total of over 300 million f t3 of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the Sunnyside Coalbed. The four holes have reduced face emissions by 78 pct.

The effect of longwall mining on streams and shallow aquifers has been the subject of numerous research studies for more than twenty years. As a result of these studies, it has become common to consider an overburden thickness of 400 feet as the lower limit at which longwall mining methods may be used with little or no effect on hydrologic systems. This paper presents the results of a study documenting the response of a large high order stream to shallow cover undermining by longwall methods in the northern Appalachian coalfield. The field site is located in a narrow stream valley where the overburden, composed primarily of limestone and sandstone units interbedded with shales and siltstones, ranges in thickness from 340 to 285 feet above the main bench of the Pittsburgh coal seam. Streamflow monitoring and monitor well measurements indicate that no significant loss zones or water table lowering resulted from undermining the stream or the adjacent valley bottom area. Additionally, hydrographs for shallow near-stream wells exhibit fluctuations related to natural seasonal variations, which are nearly identical to those observed in a non-undermined control well in the same watershed. Environmental factors affecting streamflow were monitored through the use of a control stream in an adjacent non-undermined watershed to differentiate between natural and mining induced changes in flow.

Phillips Coal Company (PCC) submitted the first surface mine permit application under the Office of Surface &lining approved regulatory program of the State of Louisiana. This application for the Oxbow Lignite Surface Mine which is located approximately 64 kilometers (40 miles) southeast of Shreveport, Louisiana was submitted in March 1981. The State of Louisiana Office of Conservation, Surface Mining Division, assigned this application number LSM-1, indicating it is the first one submitted in Louisiana history. The permit area for the Oxbow Mine encompasses 6,251 hectares (15,627 acres). Of this total permit area, 5,862 hectares (14,656 acres) were classified by soil type as prime farmland by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service (SCS). Prime farmland acreage in the permit area became a major central issue in our early planning stages and throughout the permitting process of the Oxbow Mine, due to the magnitude of acreage involved.

Provide a means to (1) rapidly disconnect a multifunctioning signal channel from a multichannel data collection system, (2) protect electronic devices from damage while causing the minimum amount of data collection disruption, and (3) operate electronic devices under gassy mine conditions. Background Data collection system instrumentation and cables are often located in hazardous areas of underground coal mines. As a result, frequent damage to the instrumentation cables occurs from roof falls, heavy equipment, and the relocation of air, water, and power lines. A similar problem exists in surface areas where cables and instrumentation can be damaged by animals and by vehicle traffic. Without a circuit-breaking feature, the damaged cables could cause instrumentation to be ruined, cause power supply failure, and otherwise disrupt data collection in some situations the lack of a circuit-breaking feature might cause an ignition in a methane atmosphere.

This paper describes a key element in the construction of a major project undertaken by Harbourfront Corporation in its efforts to rejuvenate the central Toronto waterfront. The Spadina Pier forms one of the two major structures of the $10 million marina complex. Completed in early 1986, the 150 metre(490 ft.) long by 43 metre(140 ft.) wide pier structure will contain a 320 car parking garage as well as providing the foundation of a 17-story residential tower and a two-story retail/commercial complex. However, the pier structure posed a considerable challenge to its developers due to the the many restrictions imposed on the site by the environmental authorities which ruled out the construction of dykes or the placing of other fill materials on the highly contaminated bottom sediments. In addition, access at the site was restricted by its proximity to the main harbour navigation channel and a grain elevator berth. The original design called for a cofferdam to form an integral part of the finished structure. However, the contractor chose to regard the cofferdam as a temporary structure and proposed to construct the pier in the dry by enclosing the 10,000 square metre(107,600 sf) site with a 450 metre(1480 ft.) long single wall steel sheet pile cofferdom 7.5 metres(25 ft.) from the final pier structure. This paper will describes the design and construction of the cofferdam. Prior to finalizing the pier design, a geotechnical investigation of the shale bedrock was undertaken as well as a small sheet pile test cell program to evaluate the feasibility of driving a Canadian manufactured cold-rolled sheet pile into the bedrock. Relying on the design parameters for the shale bedrock, Foundation designed the cofferdam utilizing a post-tensioned bipod bracing system to resist a 7 metre(23 ft.) hydrostatic head as well as the maximum wind and wave forces expected at the site. The bipod bracing system consists of diagonal H-pile raker piles and verticle pipe piles anchored to bedrock with post-tensioned anchors grouted into bedrock.

The design options of a gravity separator are still limited and rely on the study of settling behavior. A methodology will be presented where an experimentally given inlet droplet size distribution (DSD) is the basis for the calculation of the dispersion layer in a gravity separator. A pilot-scale continuous gravity separator is presented and CFD (computational fluid dynamic) results are validated. A transmitted light measurement technique for the determination of the DSD is presented up to a holdup of 15% dispersed phase. The resulting DSD was in the range of 20–2000 μm depending on flow rate and phase ratio. Furthermore, correlations of the real DSD with the settling behavior of the dispersion in a settling cell are discussed. The new approach to the description of gravity separators will be presented and the applied CFD methods showed good results with the system water/paraffin.

Homestake's Bulldog Mountain Operation near Creede, Colorado, in the San Juan Mountains at an elevation of nearly 2,750 m (9,000 ft), is subjected to short summers and long cold winters. Creede’s history dates back to 1889 when silver ore was discovered; and by 1892 production of over a million dollars per month was being shipped from mines located along the Amethyst Fault. The Bulldog Mountain Fault remained relatively untouched by the early prospectors. The United States Geological Survey recognized the potential of this fault in 1960, which led to the staking of many claims over the structure. Homestake leased properties in 1963 and in mid- 1964 a tunnel was started at the 2,956 m (9,700 ft) level with encouraging mineralization being encountered. In 1968 a decision was reached to build a flotation mill of 318 mtpd (350 stpd) capacity. The erection of the mill was completed in early 1969, six years after the first exploration was begun. Since initial start-up, extensive drifting has been done on several separate levels. Two underground hoist installations serve the various levels and many thousand feet of vertical mining operations. Due to the unconsolidated nature of the vein, a new unique underhand cut-and- fill mining method was developed. This procedure is the reverse of the normal cut-and-fill and proceeds from the top down under cemented sand fill, which, while expensive, has greatly reduced s toping hazards. Prior to 1977, a considerable quantity of silver was lost in the slime fraction of the ores processed because of oxidation and other inherent characteristics of individual minerals. Due to Homestakefs favorable experience in treating the slime fraction of the Lead, South Dakota gold ores, experiments with leach methods to recover silver from the slimes by Carbon -In -Pulp offered' the potential for additional silver recovery. Work was begun on the Carbon-In-Pulp plant in April 1976 and completed in December of that year at a cost slightly exceeding $2 million. The C. I. P. plant was designed for 136 mtpd (150 stpd) of current plant slimes plus 227 mtpd (250 stpd) of slimes dredged from the old tailings during the summer season. The sand fraction of the flotation

"Wet chlorination process of de-copperized anode slime is followed by de-chlorination stage in which lead-sulfate and metallic silver form silver residue. The silver residue is subsequently reduced to Ag2Se matte and PbO-SiO2 slag to remove lead to the slag in a short rotary furnace. Although this smelting process is proven well in actual operations, few papers have investigated its metallurgical aspects. This paper will describe the effectiveness of controlling parameters adopted at the Naoshima Smelter & Refinery and discuss the decisive factors influencing silver loss to PbO-SiO2 slag.IntroductionThe precious metals plant at Naoshima smelter & refinery was established in 1989, and has produced electrolytic silver, refined gold and platinum-group metals (PGM) from de-copperized anode slime as by-products of electrolytic copper. The process for gold production has been innovated from conventional smelting process to hydrometallurgical process since 2004 [1], while the process for silver production has still remained the same.The process for silver production at the Naoshima smelter & refinery is illustrated schematically in Figure 1. De-copperized anode slime is, at first, concentrated in the froth flotation process, then leached in the wet-chlorination process, and converted to silver residue in the de-chlorination process. The silver residue, which is a mixture of lead-sulfate and metallic silver, is charged to a short rotary furnace for the oxidation roasting to volatilize selenium dioxide and subsequent reduction smelting. In the smelting stage, silver residue and reverts containing selenium are smelted with flux and carbonaceous materials to form PbO-SiO2 slag and Ag2Se matte. Furthermore, Ag2Se matte is transferred to a rotary cupell and oxidized by air with the addition of sodium carbonate and sodium nitrate to produce silver anodes while removing impurities into litharge. Silver anodes are electrolytically refined by the Moebius process. Electrolytic silver is washed, dried and, finally, cast into 30kg-bars."

Great Bear lake, the fourth largest body of water on this continent, comprises an area of approximately 12,000 square miles, and is set astride the Arctic circle, with a large portion of it witnessing both the Arctic winter night, and the Arctic summer day with its midnight sun. The very name itself, Great Bear, suggests an Arctic region. The seasonal contrasts at Great Bear lake are very marked by the cold and darkness of winter, and the warmth and brightness of summer. Signs of winter such as low clouds, snow, sleet, fog, and night frosts, generally appear the latter part of August, while ice forming on bays during the last two weeks in September ends boat travel on the lake about September 30th.Early in June the ice leaves the river mouths, during the last ten days of the month it disappears from small bays, and at some time during the last two weeks of July the main body of the lake becomes navigable. In 1916, the ice disappeared earlier than usual, and the lake was navigable on July 5th. Great Bear river generally breaks up about June 1st, but, on account of ice cliffs and floes, it is not navigable with safety until early in July. Even then, the traveller is confronted with the Charles rapids, but these might be overcome by a wagon or motor road, such as the one from Fitzgerald to Fort Smith: However, in 1931, Mr. A. W. Boland, Fort Norman, N.W.T., carried with scow and motorboat practically all freight between Fort Norman and LaBine point and Hunter bay, at the east end of the lake. During July and August, two types of clothing are required, for, although the days are mainly ones of warm sunshine, the nights are cloudy and cold. In the winter season, fur clothing is used exclusively. Considerable timber, mainly white spruce, suitable for fuel and building purposes, borders the lake and extends eastward to the Coppermine river. North of the lake, no timber is found except in the river valleys, but with oil and coal possibilities near Fort Norman, the fuel situation might be solved.

Sutter Gold Venture excavated an exploration decline into a mineralized zone in the Sutter Creek gold mining district. Delays in obtaining the conditional-use permit resulted in 7 to 10 million gallons of water accumulation in the decline containing elevated dissolved arsenic. Sutter received a permit to land apply the water after reducing the arsenic concentration to 0.05 mg/L. Initially the water was treated by co- precipitation arsenic with ferric hydroxide. Operational difficulties of this treatment system resulted in Sutter pursuing alternative treatment methods. The activated alumina adsorpting was selected due to its flexibility and ease of operation. Operating and maintenance data and costs will be presented.

Iron ore deposits in south-central Missouri have emerged as a possible resource for the rare-earth elements. The Pea Ridge Iron Mine is one such deposit. Rare-earth minerals at the Pea Ridge Iron Mine are contained in breccia pipes consisting primarily of silicon oxides and feldspars. These pipes extend up through the magnetite ore body and appear to be alterations and replacement of earlier hematite. The mineralogy of these pipes is very complex and varied, which could complicate the concentration and extraction of the rare-earth minerals. This U.S. Bureau of Mines !eport represents a study by characterization of the mineral phases to assess the amenability and development of concentration and extraction techniques. Previous characterization of rare-earth minerals has been mainly by transmitted light microscopy. This method along with reflected light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction was used to identify and characterize the rare-earth and associated minerals. The mineral industry is an important element in the human environment and in varying degrees contributes to the general standard of living throughout most of the world, both by supplying the basic materials required for heavy industry, transportation, construction, scientific equipment, and many labour saving tools and also by its contribution to the international economy.When projecting population growth and per capita resource utilization against a finite amount of nonrenewable mineral resources, it is apparent that at some future time, if the established trend continues, the supply of industrial minerals will progressively become exhausted according to their relative scarcity and world demand.In one way or another all of nature's mineral resources are used in the sel'vice of man. Some of the products of their manufacture are essential to the survival and further development of our civilization, others are luxuries, desirable but not essential. Marine vessels are essential to maintain a flow of resollrces around the world, and as trade increases the size of the fleet will grow and the quantities of metals needed will be greater.The commodities they transport, may be used in an inefficient or extravagant manner causing unnecessary depletion which may adversely affect the activities of future generations. An example that comes readily to mind is fuel oil, the international transport of which uses a vast tanker fleet. When refined, large quantities of motor spirit are used in motor vehicles. The U.S.A. alone uses 70 billion gallons annually in the 90,000,000 automobiles in use.Much of this is used in private cars-of which there is one for every 2'3 people-for transport between home and city. Well organized community transport would serve the same purpose, conserve a scarce commodity, take some of the stress out of livingdriving in a major city can hardly be considered a relaxing experience-and minimize the problem of atmospheric pollution.Whilst man has demonstrated his great versatility...

(San Francisco sleeting, September, 1915) THE accompanying chart has been drawn for the convenience of engineers as a means of quickly determining the correct number of plies of conveyor belts operating under specific conditions. The calculations are based on the average safe strength (factor of safety, 15) of the various standard rubber conveyor belts. The, calculations assume maximum loading conditions; that is, the belt is considered as carrying the greatest load that it will handle without spillage at ordinary belt speeds. This not only produces the most economical operating conditions, but also the maximum tension in the belt. The chart is a graphical representation of the formula: p = kgW (L + 1OH) Where, p = the correct number of plies k = a constant, depending on the type of drive g = the weight in pounds per cubic foot of material handled W = the width of the belt in inches L = the length of the belt in feet (approximately twice the center distance). H = the difference in elevation between the head and tail pulleys, in feet.
