"The overall goal of this study was to develop a suitable flowsheet to extract rare earth elements (REEs) from coal ash. Only the findings from the first part of this study is being reported at this time. A total of fourteen coal samples of different ranks were examined for REEs concentration. An anthracite coal sample, originating from Pennsylvania having more than 700 ppm (in the coal ash) was selected for the REE extraction tests. The experimental program completed so far included high temperature leaching using nitric acid, followed by the solvent extraction tests. A 4x2x2 experimental design was used to conduct a total of thirty two high temperature leaching tests by varying acid molarity (at 4 levels), solid content (at 2 level) and leaching time (at 2 level). The highest LREE (light REE) recovery of 90% and HREE (heavy REE) recovery of 94% were obtained from the most optimum leaching test condition while maintaining the impurity recovery to the leachate at less than 40%. Solvent extraction experiments were conducted to recover the REE’s from the above leachate solution using a variety of organic extractants including, TBP, Cyanex, D2EHPA and their combinations. D2EHPA was found to be the best extractant during this SX text series providing nearly 99% recovery of REEs. INTRODUCTION The demand for rare earth element and other strategic metals (REM) in the world is rapidly increasing due to their use in a variety of high technology applications. More than 100,000 tons of rare earth oxides (REO) are being used worldwide on an annual basis. However, we have less than 10% of the world reserve of rare earth element (REE) mineral deposits in the US. More than 60% of rare earth oxide (REO) was imported to the US from outside (mostly from China) in the year of 2013. However, China’s institution of export quota has significantly reduced the supply of REMs to the U.S. Hence, new ways of producing REM and/or finding substitutes for those metals for the high-tech applications need to be invented/discovered in a timely manner. Coal Combustion Byproducts (CCBs), which are discarded as waste materials in most cases, are known to contain REEs (in low concentration) that could be extracted using a suitable process flowsheet. This may be a worthwhile route to pursue considering the short supply of REMs and the abundance of coal ash in thousands of ash ponds in the US. On an annual basis, more than 110 million tons of Coal Combustion Byproducts (CCBs) are being produced while satisfying our nation’s need for electricity (ACAA, 2014). However, less than 50% of these CCBs are being successfully used in various applications and the remainder is being dumped as waste materials in the landfills and ash ponds."

The Kayford, Boone and Nicholas Division of Bethlehem Mines Corp. operates a modern coal preparation plant in Van, WV. Since start-up of the Van plant in 1976 until the summer of 1980, the refuse handling system proved to be a costly maintenance problem and a material handling bottleneck. During the 1980 two-week miners' vacation, the original system - which included two screw conveyors and a drag conveyor - was replaced by an installation using two Flexowall steep angle belt conveyors. This paper describes the technical and economic analysis that led to the new installation and reviews its first year operating performance.

This report presents results of the research and development work and operations performed during stage II of the gas combustion retorting research program conducted by the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation and six major oil companies at the Bureau of Mines Anvil Points Research Facilities. The experimental program, including retort modification and air-gas distributor development, effects of shale quality and particle-size distribution, and other variables on the process, is discussed. Although operating problems are not fully resolved, it appears that the gas combustion retorting process can be successfully applied to achieve oil yields in excess of 85 percent of Fischer assay at mass shale feed rates of 500 pounds per hour per square foot of cross-sectional bed area, approximately twice the rate previously demonstrated to be reasonably practicable.

Hydrolyzable surfactants such as fatty acids and amines undergo, in addition to micellisation and precipitation, various associative interactions in aqueous solutions to form ion molecular complexes such as acid-soap, dimers etc. depending upon the solution conditions such as pH. The interaction of these collector species with the mineral surface and with other dissolved species in solution will play a significant role in determining the interfacial processes such as adsorption and flotation. Marked differences in the hydrophobicity imparted to the mineral surface depending upon the solution conditions such as Ph can be attributed to possible differences in surface activities of the above complexes. This aspect of solution chemistry of flotation systems is discussed here for two widely used collectors namely, oleic acid and dodecylamine. Equilibrium species distribution diagrams based on the available literature .data and on estimates of energy of interactions between molecules, have been obtained for oleic acid and dodecylamine solutions.

South Arturo is a “Carlin-type”, breccia-hosted, oxide gold deposit located at the north end of the Carlin Trend. The discovery hole was drilled in July 2005 from mine dumps 1,000 feet south of the Dee open pit. Discovery hole (BD-72) encountered a cumulative 245 feet @ 0.056 opt Au beneath 850 feet of post mineral Tertiary Carlin Formation. Oxidation extends to depths greater than 2,000 feet in the deposit area. The deposit is presently in definition drilling stage with approximately 190,000 feet of drilling completed to date. A resource estimate is in progress. This paper will focus on the discovery and descriptive characteristics of the mineralization.

"This paper summarizes diamond exploration techniques used in glaciated terrain, focussing on indicator mineral and geochemical methods applied to glacial sediments. Understanding the ice flow history, depositional history, and stratigraphy of glacial sediments is essential to successful sampling, interpretation and follow-up of indicator mineral and geochemical anomalies related to kimberlites. Kimberlite indicator minerals survive glacial transport over long distances and the relative abundance of each mineral in till is a function of the primary mineralogy of individual kimberlites. Indicator mineral distributions observed at a regional scale define the net effect of glacial dispersal, often along different ice flow directions. Local-scale distributions define individual dispersal trains. The medium sand (0.25 mm to 0.5 mm) fraction of heavy mineral concentrates, * GSC Contribution No. 2002028 prepared from glacial sediment samples, is best suited for indicator mineral surveys. The application of till geochemistry to diamond exploration is increasing because it is significantly cheaper than indicator mineral analysis and it can be performed quickly. The <0.063 mm (silt+clay) and 0.5 mm to 2.0 mm (coarse sand) fractions provide the best geochemical contrast between background and kimberlite-rich till. Kimberlite pathfinder elements that provide good contrast include Ni, Cr, Ba, Co, Sr, Rb, Nb, Mg, Ta, Ca, Fe, K, Ti and LREE, the relative importance of which will depend on kimberlite composition and that of the surrounding bedrock.IntroductionIn Canada, glacial erosion is the principal means by which kimberlite and its associated minerals have been dispersed, from a few tens of metres to tens of kilometres down-ice. Post-glacial weathering has had little impact on kimberlite debris in the glacial sediments, thus boulder tracing, indicator mineral methods and trace element geochemistry of the fine fraction of till (“drift prospecting” methods) can be used to detect kimberlite dispersal within areas covered by glacial sediment. This paper provides a summary of drift prospecting methods for kimberlite exploration in glaciated terrain, and includes examples of reconnaissance- , regional- and local-scale kimberlite indicator mineral and till geochemical distribution patterns.Weathered kimberlite is more susceptible to glacial erosion than the surrounding bedrock, thus many kimberlites in glaciated terrain are found in low or swampy ground, under small lakes, or covered by thin (< 1 m) to thick (>50 m) glacial sediments. Glacial erosion has removed varying amounts of the pre-glacially weathered kimberlite and, in some cases, the hard competent kimberlite below. For example, glacial erosion of the Peddie, McLean and Seed kimberlites near Lake Timiskaming, Ontario, removed pre-glacially weathered kimberlite, leaving a polished striated subcropping surface (McClenaghan et al., 1999a). In contrast, glacial erosion of the B30 kimberlite, near Kirkland Lake, Ontario (Fig.1), was much less vigorous and left a >10 m cap of soft and highly weathered dark green clay-rich kimberlite (McClenaghan et al., 1996). The thickness of remaining pre-glacially weathered kimberlite will influence the geophysical signature of the kimberlite."

During the past three years, USBM has developed an apparatus and technique for direct measurement of existing pressure and change of pressure in mine rock. This relatively simple and inexpensive monitor is reliable for months after being installed. It is used to determine shift of ground pressure created by different sequences of mining, to ascertain the cause of rock failures, and to evaluate the need for artificial support. The technique has been employed to measure pressures in limestone, greywacke, concrete, diabase, and soft iron ore. When rock is subjected to a load it is deformed. Ordinarily this is observed in a mine as the displacement of one point with respect to another—the deflection of the roof, which may be observed as a convergence between roof and floor; or the extrusion of material from the rib, which may be observed as a decrease of the distance between the rib and the post of a timber set. The effect of excessive pressure may be a rockburst if the rock is strong, or it may be squeezing ground if the rock is soft. Some desirable effects of high stress (high in relation to strength) are the caving of roof in a longwall mining operation, the caving of ore in block caving, and the decrease in mechanical energy required to break down the mineral seam in a retreating pillar-robbing operation. In any case, whether the observable effect of rock load is desirable or undesirable, it is a displacement, and depends on the following four factors: 1) The structure—the size and shape of openings, pillars, and linings, the geologic bedding and jointing. 2) The mechanical properties of the rock—prin-cipally the strength, modulus of elasticity, and flow characteristics. 3) The load or applied stress—primary sources are the weight of superincumbent rock, which increases with depth, and unrelieved tectonic stresses; secondary sources are redistributed pressures caused by other nearby openings, especially large mined out zones (rock pressure depends partly on the rock structure created by mining). 4) Duration of load, related to the length of time the opening is exposed. CONTROL OF ROCK DISPLACEMENT Rock displacement can be controlled by control of these four factors. Consider now the means of exercising such control over these factors. Control of the structural features is obviously possible to a great extent, as such control is exercised largely by choosing the method of mining and the methods of natural and artificial support. Rock properties vary, even within a particular mine, but they are controllable only in the limited sense that control may be exercised by choosing the beds or zones to be mined so that rocks with undesirable properties will not occupy critical positions within the rock structure created by mining. Rock pressure is the most complex of the four factors through which ground control can be achieved because it is invisible, difficult to measure, and poorly understood. Rock pressure is controllable only to the extent that control is exercised on the rock structure created by mining. Considering openings within a particular mine, time of exposure varies, and is readily controllable because it is easily measured and easily understood — the longer an opening stands, the greater the likelihood of failure or excessive convergence. Control is exercised by choice of an appropriate sequence of driving openings of different classes, such as haul-ageways and rooms, which are required to remain well supported for different lengths of time under different conditions. Again, control is exercised through the method of mining. All controllable factors can be controlled by proper design of the mining method. The orientation and relative positions of the mine workings and the sequence of their excavation are likely to be much more important to ground control than is the design of artificial support. This implies that the major decisions in regard to ground control are made, knowingly or not, at the time the mining method is chosen. WHY MEASURE ROCK PRESSURE In addition to restrictions on the several factors, control implies the measurement of these factors in some sense, whether only qualitatively by visual observation, or by actual quantitative determination with a measuring instrument. Nickel metal, in powder form, has been produced by pressure reduction, with hydrogen gas, of slurries of nickel hydroxide at temperatures up to 250°C. The nickel hydroxide was obtained by precipitation from nickel chloride and nickel sulphate solutions, using both magnesium oxide and calcium oxide. Rates of reduction and yields were determined as a function of temperature, hydrogen overpressure, seed addition, and the amount of alkali used. The mechanism of reduction of slurries obtained from the sulphate system was studied, and major differences between the sulphate system and the previously examined chloride system investigated. Specifically, in the sulphate system, contra the chloride system, no seeding was necessary, plating and densification were virtually absent and only short induction periods occurred. Grades of product are given and the use of this process in the recovery of nickel from laterites is discussed. The selective reduction of nickel from mixed hydroxide slurries and effluent treatment plant sludge has also been examined.

"SynopsisAlmost 20 years have passed since the cutting-edge research by Thompson and Visser on the design and management of opencast mine haul roads was conducted in South Africa. This system is based on three principles, namely the structural ability to support the ultra-heavy truck loads, the selection of vehicle and environmentally friendly riding surface, and an appropriate level of maintenance to counteract wear and tear. Obviously, proper layout and geometry are essential.These principles have been implemented worldwide, and it is useful to review the lessons learned. The objectives of this paper are to present a critical review of the status of mine haul road design and management, and the impact that these principles have made on operations, particularly the cost-effectiveness. The paper briefly reviews the principles of the haul road design and management and the extent to which they are applicable. Case studies of a number of implementations are presented to demonstrate that the principles are sound and have been applied effectively. For example, at an international operation the transport cost of coal was 40% more expensive than anticipated in the feasibility stage, and this made the mining operation uneconomic. Correction of this problem resulted in a viable enterprise. Although designed for opencast operations, the principles are equally valid for underground operations, and initial development work will be discussed.The main conclusions are that the research approach is valid and its effectiveness has been demonstrated in a number of applications. The anticipated financial benefit has been derived, and has made the mining operations that used the principles more effective. The conditions of temperature, strain rate, and total strain favoring deformation by grain boundary sliding, slip, or deformation with concurrent recrystallization were evaluated for alpha plutonium. Grain boundary sliding and slip were studied by examining structures formed on polished surfaces with 4.5 pct compressive deformation. The conditions required for recrystallization were determined from compressive deformation us time curves. At 110" C and at a strain rate of 10&apos;per min, deformation was almost exclusively by grain boundary sliding whereas slip was the predominant deformation mode at -10°C and lo-&apos; per min. Defarmation at intermediate tenzperatures and strain rates produced structures showing mixtures of grain boundary sliding and slip. Recrystallization occurred concurrently with deformation only after a critical strain was reached. About 14, 6, and 3 pct strain was required at 105", llO°, and lZO°C, respectively, before recrystallization started, irrespective of the strain rate in the range of lo-&apos;1 to 10&apos;4 per nzin. L HE temperature and strain-rate dependency of the modes of plastic deformation were evaluated for high-purity as-cast alpha plutonium. The techniques used to study slip and grain boundary sliding were similar to those employed previously for alpha plutonium by Bronisz and Gorum,&apos; and spriet.&apos; Recrystallization was investigated using the methods reported by Nelson.3 Bronisz and Gorum&apos; found that slip occurred on more than one slip system at room temperature, and suggested that grain boundary sliding also contributed to the deformation. spriet2 found that deformation was predominantly by slip at room temperature, and observed one to three orientations of slip traces in individual grains. In addition, he deformed polished samples at 10O° C, but concluded that the deformation character of alpha plutonium at 100° C and at room temperature were not essentially different. Several investigators reported that twinning was only occasionally observed.1&apos;2&apos;4 Nelson3 recently found in creep tests that high-purity alpha plutonium would recrystallize concurrently with compressive deformation at temperatures between 25" and 115°C. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Electrorefined plutonium having less than 300 ppm total impurities was received from Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in the form of +-in. diarn cast rods. Major impurities were americium, <I00 ppm, and tungsten, (60 ppm. Less than 25 ppm each of other impurities were present. The rods were cut into right half-cylinders 0.35 in. long and 0.25 in. in diam, and the flat faces along the cylinder axes were metal-lographically polished. To avoid loss of the metallo-graphic polish by oxidation, the polished samples were deformed in a silicone fluid heat treating medium contained in a chamber evacuated to a pressure of lo-&apos; torr. Deadweight loading was used to compress the samples between 4.5 and 20 pct at strain rates between 10"4 and lo- &apos; min-&apos;. Strain rates were determined by dividing the total deformation by the elapsed time of the test, even though the strain rate was not constant during deformation. Curves of strain vs time for samples deformed with a constant compressive stress3 show that the strain rate changes by less than a factor of four during the testing of a given sample, which is small compared to the three orders of magnitude change in strain rate investigated. Two samples were loaded into an ordinary metallographic mounting mold and impacted by striking the mold piston with one blow of a 2-lb hammer. Deformation temperatures for the two impact samples were 25" and 90°C. The samples, following deformation, were washed in carbon tetrachloride and their polished and deformed surfaces were immediately inspected metallographi-cally. Subsequently, the deformation structures were replicated with acetate replicating tape for later electron microscope examination, and the samples were then repolished and etched to reveal the microstruc-tures of the deformed metal. Second-stage carbon replicas were prepared from decontaminated acetate replicas using the procedure developed by Miller, Bierlein, and astel.&apos; Additional samples, which were 0.35 in. long by 0.25 in. in diam, were used to obtain constant load deformation vs time curves. These samples were deformed 10 to 20 pct with loads of 15 and 20,000 psi at 120°C; 30, 45, and 55,000 psi at 110°C; and 20 and 30,000 psi at 105°C. Samples were polished and etched to determine whether or not recrystallization or twinning had occurred during deformation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The experiments showed that alpha plutonium deforms by grain boundary sliding, slip, and deformation with concurrent recrystallization. Deformation by twinning was insignificant. Metallographic examination of polished and deformed surfaces revealed grain boundary sliding and slip. The start of recrystallization was ascertained from constant load deformation vs time curves. Deformed surface structures of samples compressed 4.5 pct under four different conditions of temperature and strain rate, Fig. 1, show how the deformation mode changes from predominantly grain boundary sliding to predominantly slip with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature. Deformation at 110°C and 10" 4 min-&apos;, Fig. l(a), was predominantly by grain boundary sliding. Only a few slip traces can be seen in Fig. l(a).

Copper solubility in Si02-CaO-FeOx slag equilibrated with copper matte in 10% S02 atmosphere at 1573K was estimated. Essential parameters are activity coefficients of copper oxide and sulfide, oxygen and sulfur potentials and activity of copper in the slag-matte system. A large number of experiments provide proper parameters to calculate copper solubility in slag. A classical thermodynamic model postulating CUOO.5 and CuSo.; molecules assists in estimating copper solubility in slag. Additions of Si02 and CaO reduce copper solubility almost in any condition. Copper loss, that is function copper solubility and slag volume, in the silica saturated Si02-FeOx binary slag is minimally equilibrated with less than 66% copper matte while copper loss in the 50% FeOx-SiOrCaO ternary slag saturated with 2CaOSi02 is minimally equilibrated with over 66% copper matte. This slag composition has potential for continuous copper converting, direct copper production or high-grade matte production.

"The pig iron from steel manufacturing plants contains a high concentration of vanadium-bearing materials smelted with iron ore. During the oxidation process of the molten pig iron with oxygen lances, vanadium transfers to the slag. In this research, recovery of vanadium from LD (Linz-Donawitz) converter slag of steelmaking plant was investigated. The leaching residue was characterized by XRD and XRF techniques. The maximum vanadium recovery was achieved at optimum leaching conditions of 70 °C, S/L: 1/15, sodium hydroxide concentration: 3 M and leaching time: 150 minutes. The dissolution rate increased with rising sodium hydroxide concentration and temperature and decreasing particle size. The experimental data are treated graphically to explain the kinetics of the vanadium recovery process using shrinking core model (SCM). As a result, the controlling regimes in the SCM were analyzed separately using liquid film diffusion control, solid product diffusion control, and reaction control mechanisms.IntroductionVanadium is commercially important as a constituent of several alloys and catalysts. Nowadays, vanadium is mostly recovered as a by-product from secondary sources or from industrial waste streams such as titaniferrous magnetite, fly ash, spent catalysts, and petroleum coke. Steelmaking operations are specifically concerned by this problem due to the production of a huge quantity of by-products [1]. These by-products, including LD converter slag, sludge, fly ash, spent catalyst, ash, and alloyed scrap, contain a notable amount of heavy metals which may cause environmental problems. Solvent extraction is one of the techniques being increasingly used for the recovery of vanadium [2]. Apart from vanadium ore, secondary resources such as titanmagnetite, ilmenite and slag from the ferrous industry are a major source of supply. The pig iron from steel manufacturing contains a majority of vanadium-bearing materials smelted with iron ore. In a heat resistant shaking ladle the molten pig iron is oxidized with oxygen lances, causing the vanadium to be transferred to the slag. Normally, the vanadium in LD converter steel slag (coming from Linz-Donawitz steelmaking process) is ca. 5% as vanadium pentoxide (V2O5). This slag is the world's principal raw material for vanadium production [3, 4]. Moskalyk and Alfantazi [4] reported that a roast-leach process is used in South Africa for the production of vanadium oxides from magnetite ores while some of the slag was converted to ferrovanadium. A portion of the slag was exported to Europe for the production of vanadium oxide. The researchers mentioned that alkaline roasting was the main process at that time employed to extract vanadium pentoxide from vanadium slags."

Laboratory experiments have been performed to evaluate the potential for metal removal and recovery from river bed tailings by ferric chloride leaching. The lead, zinc, silver and other metals in the river bed occur due to the old method of dumping mill tailings into rivers. This was practiced prior to the introduction of tailings impoundments. The effects of the leaching method, leaching time, pulp density, ferric chloride concentration, and leaching temperature on the rates and recoveries of lead, zinc and silver were studied. The effects of pulp density and leaching temperature were significant on the extraction rates of lead, zinc and silver. The lead content in the leached tailing was reduced to 0.023 percent, when using an 353O K leaching temperature and 0.384 g of FeC13/1 g of sample.

The correct specification and then selection of primary or major fans for an underground mine is a critical decision not only in terms of fan capital and operating costs, but also safety and reliability which usually has a major impact on mine production. In addition, fan manufacturers may spend tens of thousands of dollars preparing proposals for a purchase enquiry for primary fans especially where they have complete responsibility for the installation (turnkey projects). There are many good reasons to thoroughly and fairly adjudicate fan tenders. In many automated mines, multi media video and audio funtionality has to be combined with sensor information or steering commands, which is the idea of a new, PC based integrated and multi media capable control system. The new control system (Multimedia Control - MMC) bases entirely on TCP/IP networking and internet technology. For the first time, this enables the ‘intelligent’ use of video and audio information: pictures and voice sequences may be forwarded on request only, they may be stored if particular events occur (e.g. video black boxes) and sensor signals as well as actions from the automation system can directly be assigned with multi media sequences. MultiMedia Control entirely bases on object oriented software. It uses most modern software technology. As user interface, only a standard web browser is required. This makes the handling of different machines easy. By using mobile web pads, dedicated local operator interfaces are not required any longer. The service staff just connects to the automated equipment by – wireless –LAN to make required adjustments. Customization is easy using an open Application Programming Interface. Software modules may be added to the system without touching or recompiling existing components. The system was prototyped in 2000 using a demo-application. The performance tests showed very positive results both regarding the control system behaviour and the speed/latency timing behaviour of the multi-media information processed. The system now is slightly reshaped to completely meet the final product requirements. It is expected to be available by the end of 2001. Iran has had an active mining sector for some 7000 years. Exceptional in terms of its mineral diversity, Iran produces 62 minerals, and is ranked among the world’s 15 most mineral-rich countries. Many people around the world know Iran as one of the major petroleum exporters. Oil and natural gas dominate Iran’s economy, and oil exports provide the principal source of income, contributing more than 80 per cent of foreign exchange earnings. Transformation of Iran from an oil exporter to an independent country to oil has been on the table for many years, even before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Development of the Iran’s mineral industry is one of the major replacements for petroleum exports. In the last decade, Iran invested billion dollars in the mining and mineral industry sectors and to increase the added value, tried to export processed minerals instead of the raw materials. In accordance with the ‘20-year Perspective 2025’ that targeted by the Supreme Leader, Iran will be a country with the first rank in economy, science and technology in its region. The objectives over this perspective include briefly increasing annual production to 55 Mt of crude steel, 800 000 tonne of copper cathode, 1.5 Mt of aluminium, 200 Mt mineral products, 300 000 tonne of zinc and 5 000 kg of gold. These goals are achievable in normal circumstances, but concurrency of the 20-year Perspective 2025 with commencement of the UN Security Council sanctions against Iran, frustrated objectives of the perspective, at least the ones related to the mining and mineral industry sectors. This paper tries to elaborate the development programs and following challenges for the mining activities of Iran by 2025.

In mid 1978 Inland Cement Industries Ltd. brought on-line their new one million megagram (Mg) per year cement plant at Tilbury Island, Delta, British Columbia. The Plant--Its Philosophy of Design The design of this plant began in 1974, at the beginning of the rapid rise in petroleum costs later referred to as the "energy crisis". The trend in fuel costs was clear, so one of the basic criteria for the selection of process equipment was high thermal efficiency. Throughout the process of selection of materials handling and process equipment, energy consumption was a factor in decisions. A second factor which influenced the design of the plant was its location on navigable water. The plant is designed to make maximum use of this means of transport to minimize transportation costs. All raw materials (and some fuel) are received by water, and a major portion of the cement and clinker is sent out by barge. Extensive modern dock and material handling facilities were provided to accomplish the shipping and receiving functions. A plant meeting stringent environmental regulations was the third major factor which formed the basis for design. To meet this requirement, all storage facilities had to be covered, 53 bag type dust collectors were applied throughout the plant, and materials handling equipment was designed to minimize dust and spillage.

The new Lyon-Turin railway project involves the construction of a 57 km twin-tube tunnel between France and Italy. Pini France (project leader) and Systra-SWS are the designers of Construction Site 8 (CO8). This part of the project includes the construction of the tunnel portal on the Villard-Clément platform, two 2.8 km long tubes of the base tunnel in the direction of Saint Martin la Porte, the cross-passages between tubes and the niches. This paper presents the general approach followed to design the temporary support for the base tunnel, cross-passages, and technical rooms. The design of the temporary support accounts for the variability of the ground and water conditions, the excavation attended behavior, the construction planning and the identified geological hazards that could be encountered along the alignment. Particular attention is paid to the intersections between the tunnels both in terms of numerical modelling and construction methods and phases. Two types of intersections are present in the project: the intersections between the cross-passages and the base tunnel and the intersections between the base tunnel and the niches. 3D models have been developed for the tunnel intersections.

There has been a reduction in overall workforce in the mining industry during the current downturn; a corresponding reduction in fatalities and high potential incidents (HPIs) has not been observed. The same contributing factors can be seen in the vast majority of these incidents. These include inadequate supervision and lack of adequate risk assessment. How management structures, trains and leads an operation can have a great impact on eliminating these factors and reducing the risk of fatalities and HPIs.Contractors now account for 41 per cent of full-time equivalent employees in the Queensland mining workforce, and are disproportionately represented in the majority of fatalities and HPIs. Having a clear strategy for how contractors are integrated into the workforce is crucial. "With the aid of the proper original numerical model of solidification the instruction for preparation of input parameters for numerical simulation of technological processes, with change of the phase or structure, will be presented. A method of calculation analysis of influence of therrpophysical properties of materials entering the system of casting-mould-cores environment, and also of boundary conditions on the required simulation accuracy will be suggested. For the cast material, the influence of heat .conductivity, specific heat capacity, density and latent heat of phase transformation also has been analysed. For metallic or non-metallic moulding material"" the influence of the see main parameters has been analysed and, furthermore, their combination, influence of thermal conductivity, and of heat storage. The order of influence of all quoted parameters of a casting and moulding material was established. For example heat conductivity in the liquid state is on the last place. From the boundary conditions the -most important influence on the total solidification time and · on the mechanism of forming of temperature field has the ·boundary condition on the casting mould boundary, then follows the boundary condition on the level of a molten metal. The negligible influence has the boundary condition on the mould frame and on the bottom.IntroductionThe original and universal mathematical model of solidification, cooling and heating has been set up and checked, in order to be capable of analysing a one- to three-dimensional steady or unsteady temperature field of the casting-mould-environment system and, namely, of the system as a whole or its arbitrary parts, during any industrial technological process whose individual processes could be solidification, cooling, heating, refrigeration and others, in any sequence or singly. The model enables the simulation of traditional and also non-traditional technologies of casting in foundries, metallurgical plants, forging operations, heat treatment processes, etc. If solidification is not the matter, the metal part of the system need not be called the casting but a component, a block, a forging and the like."
